Title: NOBODY HERE BUT US CHICKENS
Post by: bk on November 12, 2003, 12:02:47 AM
Now that you've read the notes you know all the things I spoke about, and so feel free to comment on them and the topic of disussion - and yes, I mean disussion and those who skipped the notes won't know what the hell I'm talking about.

So, let's see if we can shatter some more records, shall we?  We are on a natural high here, I tell you or, at the very least, a Rocky Mountain high.

Now that we know about Bk's fractured psyche I wondered who else out there had had broken bones and fractures or did you all escape that part of childhood when falling from playground equipment and trees seemed to be the norm. It seems an appropriate topic after the mentions of fractured fairytales yesterday. For myself, a broken nose was it.These days it seems that parents want to blame someone if their child is injured through "play". When I was a child it was seen as part of life and we all got on with living without the necessity of blaming and taking legal action.

Is that like the Fractured Flickers we were talking about yesterday?  I will join the disussion directly.

No broken bones for me!  ;D

Question me an answer bright and clear.

I will answer with a question clear and bright.

Even though your answer may be wrong my question will be right.

Question me an answer.

Answer with a question.

They say knowledge makes you free.

Question me an answer if you please.

I will answer with a question if I can.

Let me show you just how I became an educated man.

Question me an answer.

Answer with a question.

If you wanna' know, if you wanna' hear, if you wanna' see,

question me an answer.

Here is your Allison Hayes pic of the day....the real cause of the electrical blackout on the east coast earlier this year!  ;D
I am looking for another icon to replace my Company album....so as the day goes on, some strange things may show up to the left of my posts.  Just ignore them, if they don't work, they will go away.  Thank you!  :D

I did add my AIM nickname.  Thanks, Mr Mark Bakalor for fixing that "Profile" bug!  8)

My question for DR MDS, why did they choose THOSE composers for that movie?

My first question for ASK BK day - did you listen to the Rosalind Russell tracks on the Gypsy soundtrack yet?  If so....what do you think?  (I don't have my copy yet).

My question for DR MDS, why did they choose THOSE composers for that movie?

Why not?
or
Do you think any other composer or composer/lyricist could have done better?
or
Do you really think it needed to be a musical?
Title: Re:NOBODY HERE BUT US CHICKENS
Post by: Jrand74 on November 12, 2003, 04:54:53 AM
I guess I didn't really think it needed to be musicalized.  The first reel or so is almost a shot for shot remake of the original, the cast is great and it is very exciting - and even the first number which is a dancing type of thing with Olivia Hussey doesn't break the mood too much - but after that....   :P

I guess the music just seems so seventies to me and the choreography is so retro!  The sentiments of the songs are okay....I don't know.  I guess it is the second choice you gave me - if they had just kept on with a non-musical remake, I might have liked it better, because it starts out fine.  8)

As to who else?  Hmmmmmmmmm......well Ross Hunter had used Jimmy Van Heusen, Andre Previn, Elmer Bernstein, and Jay Thompson to write some music for Thoroughly Modern Millie - so maybe some guys like that...or Henry Mancini....  I would be interested in some other DR's opinions on this.    ;D

What do YOU think MDS?

Good Morning all!

I'm typing this before I leave for classs.  I'm really looking forward to this one==Digital Photography.  I won’t be back in the office, proper until Friday!  Yay!  But thinking about all the work I’ll have piled up.......   Well, I just look at it as job security

As far as broken bones, I only have one.  My right pointer finger.  Slammed my hand in a car door and every finger was one over( if you can picture that) when I pulled it out..  Without thinking, I immediately put everything back in it’s original position.  No, it didn't hurt when I did that because it was done so fast, the pain hadn't set in yet.

A month later my one finger kept hurting so I took a trip to the Dr.  I found I did a good job for the most part.  They could have fixed my finger by re breaking it but I declined.

Jennifer, I await your comments on that joke with bated breath.

Gotta run.  I’ll be home early.  Double yay!  I’ll think up a question or two by then.

Have a safe and happy day.  Even you lurkers.  Cracked or not.

Wow, you go to bed a fully confirmed Senior Member and wake up to discover shards covering the living room floor from all the records broken during the night. My, my, my, what a night you folks had.

Luckily I have never had a broken bone or even a sprain. I was in the hospital for an operation when I was 14 and two years ago I had to have another procedure to clear away polyps in my sinuses but otherwise, I've been healthy.

JRand, you're channeling Annette right now, correct? I remember we used to call her Annette Fullajello. We were kids and it made us laugh!

Hope TCB has solved the problem with instant messages throwing him out of the system. I received his message last night with no problem. I hope my response to him didn't kick him out.

Emily, did you have the Santa hat on your avatar all the time or is that a new addition? BTW, thanks for the offer to "visit" Jennifer but I think we can let her go on her merry way. She shall reach her goal sometime today and that's all we really care about, right? Not who reached it first, right? It's just important that we were both part of a record breaking day yesterday, right? Of course, right (Fiddler reference).

I have no questions for either side right now. Maybe later.

Back to the printouts.

LOL - thanks DR WEL.  I've always thought, if you 're blessed with an abundance of hair, you should wear it all on one side of your head!

And you know, Annette would have been much richer today, but WDP deducted $50 from a Mouseketeer paycheck each time a set of "ears" was lost!

Don't know about channeling, DR Ben, but it seemed to be about the right size!  And we had fun with her name, too.  My favorite tragic rumor when I was in the fifth grade, was that several Mouseketeers had been killed in a roller coaster accident at Disneyland.  It was the talk of the playground, but no newspaper carried the story!  My brother said it was because the show was in reruns!

On behalf of my friend, David Friedman, I am posting the following email in response to the rumor that his show is in danger of closing:

Dear Craig,

Yes, unfortunately, it's true. My show "Listen To My Heart - The Songs of David Friedman" at Upstairs at Studio 54" is in great danger of closing.  We need to sell 600 tickets by the beginning of the weekend or Sunday will be our last day. People are loving the show but we haven't had the proper promotion and now that we've figured out how to market the show, we don't have the necessary revenue to  do the advertising we need. There are so many people who are getting on board in support of us, Joey Reynolds, Allie Wentworth, John Edward, Gail Sheehy, Jonathan Schwartz, and audiences have been fantastically enthusiastic, but, as my own song says "now the only thing we really need is time."  Our promotional efforts will take a few weeks to put in place, and the only way we can stay alive is by an infusion of cash or grass roots ticket sales.

The online community and the cabaret community have always been my biggest supporters, in fact they're the reason my music is known at all, so we see them as our only chance to make it through this week and the next few until our wider audience can build sufficiently to sustain the show. So if anyone is even remotely thinking of coming to the show, please do it today. And come backstage and meet me afterward and let me know that you came because of talkin' Broadway.

Tickets are $60 for the best center seats, but a $25 ticket can be had (they're a little more on the side but you can see from anywhere in this small theater) by visiting  Telecharge.com or calling (212) 239-6200 and giving them
Code #LHDFEM9.

Thanks so much for your email and offer of support. I'm praying that this comes through, I've never done something I've loved as much as this in my life, and the chance to spend every evening with a group of people sharing my songs is a dream come true.

Best,

David Friedman

No broken bones thus far in my life! Thank goodness and knock on wood!

BK, I too am fully enjoying the YOU BET YOUR LIFE DVD set. I watched several episodes last night and laughed till I cried! Some very interesting people show up on that show! Keep a look out for Tarzan Gordon Scott and Mr. Universe Reg Lewis (whose interview is running in the new Scarlet Street magazine). My favorite episode thus far was the one with Mrs. Mary Futernick of N.C. the rotund woman who was allergic to flowers, who loved to sing, and who wanted to play the piano (but Groucho didn't have one)! And the stag reel had me in stiches!!!!

Good morning!

Wow....congrats everyone on shattering the record last night!  Although I wish I could have helped you...that's my own karma for being errant and truant, right!  ;)

The dress rehearsal for Macbeth went very well, and we're actually going to be reviewed by the Washington Post in a couple of days, which I was SO not expecting.  Tomorrow is opening night...today though I have to bother with mundane boring things like class!

Tom--I've never had a broken bone, although I have sprained various parts of my body, including my back.  That is the worst, I think.

Ben and Jen--I love that we have our own Bennifer here at HHW!  You guys' post-race is so much more interesting than anything I could read about two other people who happen to have your names.

BK--Reading about the Gypsy soundtrack made me think about how much I wish Merman had done the movie.  What stars do you wish had recreated their original roles in films of musicals, rather than having been replaced by established movie stars?

Luckily for me, no broken bones here either, and the last operation I had was at age 5 to have my tonsils removed. Count me one of the lucky ones.

I remember at the very end of the MAD Magazine parody of HUSH HUSH SWEET CHARLOTTE, the character of Annette Funnyjello took off her disguise, picked up her ax, and started to murder all the old ladies of the cast since their horror movies were outgrossing her Beach Party movies by a substantial margin. I thought that was a hilarious way to end that parody.

Good morning!

Cheers to Ben for being the ONLY DR to make reference to my new "seasonal" pic! :)

Yesterday I was walking through Place Ville Marie - a local shopping/business area downtown for those of you who aren't MDS, Jennifer or Andrea -  on my way to the métro and experienced something amazing.  I witnessed (drumroll please) the "official" start of the Christmas season!

I'm walking through the place with about a gazillion other people and all of a sudden the canned Celine Dion music is switched off for about five blissful seconds.  Then, what comes blaring over the speakers but a full horn rendition of "Hark the Herald Angels Sing"!  People groaned I tell ya (except for me, b/c that's my favorite christmas carol)

Christmas is here.  Let the shopping begin!  (I can be so materialistic this time of the year!) :)

My Question to BK and all DRs (I'm killing two bird with one stone):

If you could travel to anywhere in the world that you have NEVER been before, where would it be?

I want to go to Turkey.  I don't really know where my obsession with Turkey came from, but it just sounds exotic enough without being totally dangerous :)

Good question, DR Emily, and an easy one for me: London. I've never been and have always wanted to go, but I want to share it with someone special in my life, and the timing just hasn't been right for that yet.

DR JRand: the parody was entitled HACK, HACK, SWEET HAS-BEEN. I have some of my old MAD magazines around here. Let me see if I've got that one.

WEL: Because it is more fun to point out the errors than correct them.  And I'm all about fun, as everyone knows.

MDS: Bacharach and David were most likely chosen because a) they were incredibly successful pop songwriters, and b) they'd just come off a huge hit Broadway musical.

I would go to England - shockingly, I've never been.  Then it would probably be Japan.

[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]SPELLING IS DEFUNCT.

Now, the "Great Beast 666" may have given us the great quote above (which definitely applies to another site we can all name), but, call me psycho (and you wouldn't be the first to!), I think spelling is important.  My mother, for example, once lost the state spelling bee when she misspelled her own first name, which she just happened to randomly get as a spelling word in the contest.

I have never been to the Far East. A dear friend worked at Tokyo Disney and makes Japan and Tokyo sound like a fascinating place. I would vote for Japan right now.

Good~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Vibes

Good Vibes for David's show. I'm a David Friedman fan. I saw the show and was quite taken with it. Alix Korey is both moving and hysterical in her performances. I even reviewed the show for BBC Radio Wales. The review hasn't aired yet. It should be on in the next couple of weeks. A lot of good that will do them. I don't think the Welsh will fly over to NYC to see the show anytime soon.

Here's a link to the site. You can hear Nancy LaMott singing some of David's songs.

Good morning all!
Broken bones...well, I was one of those tomboy girls who was always injuring something.  Both arms have been broken, although not at the same time.  The first was my right arm by falling out of a tree when I was eight.  That was the worse of the two because I broke both of the bones.  It was also bad timing because I was about to go in for one of my operations.  The second was two years later when I was 10, roller skating at a rink.  I was a speed demon back then and a took a corner too fast and broke my left arm.  Thankfully nothing has been broken recently.
Off to class...bye everyone!

I never broke any bones, but I do remember riding a bike down a big hill and falling and scraping my face really badly.  I must have been about 8 or 9 years old.  My mom drove me to and from the army hospital and I kept a washcloth over my face because I thought that my face was too horrible for people to look at...it wasn't.  And the "accident" didn't keep me off of bikes, which was a good thing.

Has anyone heard about the new book by Barry Singer called EVER AFTER? I've taken the book description from Amazon's site and reprinted it below. Is he an author I should know or respect?

"Ever After is more than a detailed show-by-show history of the last quarter century in American musical theater. It explains how the storied Broadway tradition in many cases went so very wrong. Singer takes the reader behind the scenes for an unparalleled look at A Chorus Line's final bow, the creation of Rent, the real people behind Disney's uber-musicals, and even an afternoon with Andrew Lloyd Webber.Ever After also celebrates the promise of the next generation of young musical theater artists, especially Adam Guettel, Michael John LaChiusa, Ricky Ian Gordon and Jason Robert Brown, addressing not only their work to date, but their future projects. There is no other book currently available that covers this period and subject. Through his work for The New York Times, Singer has interviewed virtually everyone of significance. They are all here, very much speaking for themselves. Ever After is both anecdotal and analytical, featuring personality profiles of important creative figures, from Jule Styne to Stephen Sondheim to Jonathan Larson, while critically evaluating all of the many musicals produced during the past 25 years.Sure to generate debate, this is a book written not only for the musical theater aficionado, but for anyone who has seen the musical or even just enjoyed the movie version of Chicago and is curious to know more. "

The only way the fractured psycho can get attention is to disrespect his betters.

Jrand, that is one talented chicken.  Emily, love your holiday hat.  Let the shopping commence!

I've never had any broken bones, thank goodness, but over the course of my life I have had 21 teeth pulled.  This has led to many experiences with dentists who have a talent for causing things pain (oh, a LITTLE SHOP reference).  (http://www.click-smilie.de/sammlung0903/sprachlos/speechless-smiley-038.gif) (http://www.click-smilie.de/sammlung0903/sprachlos/speechless-smiley-039.gif)

I LOVE travel!  I have been fortunate enough to do a lot of it, so for places I haven't yet been, I would most like to visit Africa.  I would also love to see more of Thailand as I spent one day seeing its lagoons but didn't get to any of the cities.

I can't think of any good questions right now - so what is everyone having for lunch?  I am having Chinese delivered to the office.  (but not from Ollie's Noodle Shop :()

Don't give up the ship
Remember that it's dark before the dawn
Here's a friendly tip
You sing a song of mine, next day you're gone!

So, even if you're suffering with cancer
A plethora of sixteenth notes could be the answer:

Music can uplift
Not schlock
Like Strouse or Bock;
I've got a gift
One day you're scoring runs
Next day you're whiffed
So choke up... on the bat
Know that
My music can uplift

So any time you need some inspiration
Prick up your ear and hear this modulation...

(Repeat chorus, several times, moving up a half step every time)

Some serendipity came my way this morning, Dear Readers.  I have been trying to get a ticket to the first jazz concert to be held at the new Walt Disney Concert Hall, but each time I checked, the concert was sold out.  On a lark, I tried Ticketmonster one more time this morning and, lo and behold, a seat was available.

The concert marks the 20th anniversary of the Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, Jack DeJohnette trio.  I will be seated behind the players, in what is called the orchestra "view" section.  It should be interesting!

So, my question for Dear BK and Dear Readers is this:  have you ever had the opportunity to sit in stage seats, behind the performer(s)?  If so, what was the occasion and what was it like?

Broken records….. broken bones….. broken hearts…. Broken homes.

Good Lord, what a maudlin way to start the day, except the broken record from yesterday.  Unless, of course, you are talking about some of your classic LPs (LP = Long Playing, referring to phonograph albums, kiddies) as broken records.

As a kid, I don’t think I ever actually broke anything.  I did lots of other damage to my body, however.   I was always going bike riding wearing those little rubber sandals that we called thongs (as opposed to the other kind of thong that nobody would want to see me wear).  Well, when I wanted to stop my bike, I used to stick my foot down and drag it.  Not a good idea.

Since I became an adult, I have tried to make up for lost time in the hospital department.  Most of the hospital stays and surgeries have been related to my spine, including last year’s spinal fracture.  In addition, I had my hip replaced about 12 years ago due to arthritis, and I now need to have it done again, because artificial hip has turned, and is now trying to come out of the side of my leg.  However, after going fours month last year on leave without pay, it will be a long time before I can afford to take the time needed for the new surgery.

Jennifer is about to join the exclusive club of Senior Member. 3 posts to go (as I write it she has 248). I don't know if we should call them "goals" though. It sounds too much like work. I have to have my yearly performance evaluation this month and part of that exercise includes a review of my "goals" for the year. Uggh. The modern office environment. Goals and synergy meetings and blah de blah de blah. Just let me do my work. Oh, well.

I do think that Messrs. Pulliam and JRand will hit the magic 500 mark soon. I hope they do it before mid-December when I become errant and truant. Keep posting boys!

The one place I haven't been yet, but really want to go to , is Egypt.  In fact, I want to cruise on one of those smart little ships down the Nile and then wander the desert wearing my Lawrence of Arabia garb, and a pith helmet.

P.S.  Oh, and if we could arrange to have a murder on the Nile, it would really complete the journey.

It's not that raunchy, but still. I would email it to BK and ask him if he thinks it is appropriate or not.  But I love that it has both Superman and Wonderwoman.

We are one week away from DR Jason's natal day and we are one day away from the opening of The Scottish Play. I'd say Break a Leg but since this play may be cursed, I wouldn't want anything literal to happen. At least it's not opening on Friday the 13th.

Personally, I spent enough time in the UAE while on Persian Gulf duty to sate my thirst for the desert.  I'd love to see the ruins of Egypt, but they can keep the heat and the sand and the little noseeumbitingbugs.

I want to revisit Greece ....  heaven on earth!  It's definitely "home" from a past life.  My first visit to Athens, I was able to lead a group of folks to various locales and had never laid eyes on a map.  I just KNEW they were there...and there they were!    I spent five months in Athens, and my soul vibrated the entire time!!!

I've had a set fall on me (okay... okay... so it wasn't really a set.  It was a fake Christmas tree) but we were doing a scene from A Midsummer's Night's Dream en français.

We had to stop the scene because we were all laughing so hard (plus the tree had knocked any chance of me remembering French Shakespearian Dialogue - I, who was playing Lysandre, kept shouting "je vous aime point!" to the poor girl playing Hermia over and over again opening one of the lines would pop back into my head until we eventually called it.)

We got really good marks for it though!  I think the French teacher took pity on assigning my group SHAKESPEARE! :)

Ron -- How wonderful that must have been for you.  I had forgotten about Greece, but it is definitely on my list.

It is strange, but I feel somewhat the same way in New York.  The very first time I set foot in The City, I felt like I had come home.  Maybe it is because it the heart of theater, or maybe indeed it started in a former life.  I know that I had a Psychic tell me that I had been on the Titanic, and that was without knowing a thing about my life-long fascination with the ship.  So, who knows?

Rosie trial a draw

Judge decides not to award damages in highly publicized battle over the demise of a magazine.
November 12, 2003: 2:46 PM EST
By Meghan Collins, CNN/Money Staff Writer

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - A judge ruled Wednesday that neither side in the Rosie O'Donnell trial deserved damages in her dispute with her former publisher over the demise of Rosie magazine.

Rosie O'Donnell on her way into court in New York Wednesday morning.
In his statement, New York Supreme Court Justice Ira Gammerman said the lawsuit was "ill-conceived," CNNfn reported. Gammerman also said that outside of legal fees, neither side proved any damages.

An estimate that the magazine was worth a projected $65 million was tossed around but not backed up by testimony, he added, noting there was no proof that the magazine was going to be a profitable venture, as there had been testimony that it was losing money.

Gammerman said really what was at stake were bragging rights.

But despite the lack of a ruling in favor of either side, one expert said O'Donnell is the real winner.

"I think it's a big victory for Rosie. Who doesn't?," said Charles Sims, a partner in the entertainment law practice of Proskauer Rose LLP. "Rosie didn't want this fight. She wouldn't have brought this lawsuit if they didn't sue her (first). She just wanted to show that the claims were unjustified."

The only broken bone I've had was a broken arm, sustained when I was riding on my Honda 50 (when I was seventeen) and someone made a u-turn in front of me without warning and I smashed into their car, flew over the car and then landed on the ground.  Lucky it was only a broken arm.  Funnily, one of my witnesses to the accident was named Hy Pike, and years later I hired him to play my Uncle Benny in TFNM.

LC-21 teeth pulled!  I can’t imagine.

TCB I have never heard of an artificial hip turning.  Does this happen without being the fault of the surgeon?

No broken bones as a child, even when my ankle got caught in the spoke of the bike.  I assure you all of the neighbors heard my scream when that happened.  Luckily for me I never fell out of a tree.  It seemed as if I did fall at least once a day and became rather the expert at rolling with my falls.  As an adult I had a hairline fracture of my ankle which didn’t hurt nearly as much as the sprain I acquired a few year earlier when my dog crashed into me.  Reminds me, that same dog caused me to break my little toe.  I’m pretty sure one of our puppies broke my nose once.  Since I was the only person who could detect the little bump that wasn’t there before, I never went to the doctor to confirm my diagnosis.

Jennifer--I always try and read everything that everyone writes, but now and again I don't catch everything so I must have missed Emily's Bennifer comments.  However, it just goes to show that great minds think alike, right?  ;)

TCB I had feared that but hoped for the best.  I know a dear woman of Japanese decent who has had multiple hip surgeries.  They were not easy.  As a child her hip was injured when her father backed up in the driveway and didn’t see her.  The family was too poor to provide her with the medical care and surgery she needed to fix her hip.  A childless Caucasian couple took her in and was providing the necessary medical care she needed.  Just before she was to have surgery the young girl was taken away from her “new parents” and sent to an internment camp with her family.  This of course was during WW11.

BK - what was your Biblical sales pitch? :)

Maya - the French was relatively modern, although because the translator tried to keep the same rhyming pattern as the original English version there were occassional weird obscure words thrown in.  It was a long time ago, but I think it also stuck with iambic pentameter.

All I can remember is:

"Ah, chère Hermia
un innocent propos
l'amour, quand l'amour parle,
entend plus qu'une mot"

What place that I haven't been would I most like to visit?

I've always really wanted to go to Hawaii. And Venice.

Btw, here are the choices for Karmy's name:

Cammy
Kim-lette
giblet
biklet
karma kameleon
kim
karmutt

bru-bru
kimshe

I think the first 3 got the most votes so far.

All of the power has been out, on my end of the building, since 11:00 a.m.  Fortunately, the computers are on a separate squirrel circuit.

I had a cute cartoon to send about computers at work being down, but I didn't know if it would work as an attachment.

My strangest job so far was also my best job!

When I worked as an administrative assistant at Gilda's Club here in Montreal - a non profit support community for men, women and children living with cancer named for comedienne Gilda Radner - the organization wasn't doing very well in terms of membership.  The program staff was having a hard time keeping volunteers to run fun workshops and classes during the day because people simply weren't showing up for them.

So for my first summer of employment, I was asked to, on top of my typical office jobs, attend at least one of these classes a day to "make them look full".

I took (and these are just the ones I remember)

candle making, creative writing, belly dancing, gourmet cooking, "Laugh for No Reason", crocheting/knitting, cake decorating, aerobics and yoga with no less than 4 different teachers

I also got to attend dozens of interesting seminars/lectures on cancer and health care.

And for this I earned $7/hr!

For the most boring show I ever saw, I must make it a two part answer.

As a kid (teen-ager), I was most royally bored at I HAD A BALL. Buddy Hackett was never a favorite of mine, and while I do remember being impressed with the power of Karen Morrow's voice, I hated that score.

As an adult, I'd have to say the show that bored me the most was MISS SAIGON. Might have made a charming chamber musical but that gargantuan production at the Broadway Theatre had me nodding off more than once. Again, the score did nothing for me (and I LOVED LES MISERABLES.)

I saw HIGH SOCIETY on Broadway, and it was a very polished production and everyone in it did their best. Still, all I kept thinking during the performance was that it didn't need to be on Broadway; that a community theater could do a most credible job with THAT material. So I wasn't bored, just massively disappointed.

Jane, you are lucky to have a son in Eastern Europe whom you can visit and pester!  That's what my relatives think about me in New York, anyway. :)  I agree with your son, you must see Prague.  It is a beautiful city.

I had stubborn teeth that wouldn't fall out naturally, so almost all of them had to be pulled.  At least the tooth fairy compensated me handsomely.

Where do your relatives visit from?

Being a semi rural dweller I have just driven to the local post office to collect my mail. Oh the disappointment after yesterday when I received "what a gift" (a funny girl reference) from a generous soul in the NW and a package of yet more music from another generous soul in France. Today only bank satements. I guess I should be pleased that at least they were in the black. Now is it really possible to not open my present for another four weeks. I am not sure what is the most unseemly choice to make. To open or not to open. Advice needed.

Evening All!  I had a WONDERFUL class today.  I really, really, really, really enjoyed myself.  I can’t wait for tomorrow and am only sorry it will be over.  I could go for a month and still want more.

Jennifer–that’s why I didn’t just go ahead and post it.  It cracks me up but....  I’m to shy to send it to a guy so we’ll just skip it.  I don’t want to offend anyone

JRand53-I guess Jennifer told it to you.

There are so many places I would like to go NYC, England, Ireland, Scotland, Egypt, Oz, New Zealand, to name just a few places.

Good Vibes to TCB with the hip replacement.  Ouch.

Why not Karmy for the Karma Fairy?

My question is for Jane–How did you get the doggie in your post last night?  That’s one of the pictures I’ve been trying to make work but can’t.  It’s not on the smiley page.  Where did you get it and how does it work?  Many thanks!

An hour later, and it's a heat wave outside!

I wonder what precautions DR TFO takes "down under".  Ya know, they get the brunt of the sun's full wrath because of that hole in the ozone layer....most of Australia lies there unprotected, like so much fish.

Skin Cancer is a major killer here in OZ. Unfortunately most of the damage was done when we were children and there was no knowledge of the harm that the sun could do. The youngsters  (and their parents) these days have so much information. Hats and sunscreen are essentials - even in the grade school playground. I have never been a "sun worshipper" - suntanning on the beach was just like "so much fish" in my opinion. There was more fun to be had in the sand dunes and associated beach scrub. There probably still is. DR thanks for your questions and concern  but I don't wish to discuss my "down under" at this time. (I am reasonable sure that it is cancer free!)

Matt and TCB--Maybe it's a good thing that I didn't see High Society then!  I've heard the CD and liked it quite a bit...but I guess it was just one of those shows that's better in the OCR than it is onstage.  Although from the pics Melissa Errico was a breathtaking Tracy Lord!

Emily--Very cute translation!  I bet you were an adorable Lysandre!  ;)

Jrand--"Hope you get a hand on your opening."  You know, I may actually say that line to a few people just to see their reactions!

With friends at HHW "Everything Is Possible". Yes I have indeed opened the parcel. What an amazing present - a book that certainly will not be published here in OZ and one that I am so looking forward to reading. Unlike some critics, I believe that "Follies" is much more than its brilliant score. I do feel for those characters and their own personal follies of self-delusion. A wonderful present. A wonderful friend.

I had NO complaints with any of the actors in HIGH SOCIETY (how could you when they included the ever-gorgeous Daniel McDonald and Marc Kudisch). They looked beautiful and did their jobs as well as they could. It was the material that was just not up to par. One major objection to the score: the best song in the film to me was "You're Sensational," and it was practically thrown away in the stage version.

OK, a question about ELAINE STRITCH AT LIBERTY. I didn't see it in NYC. I did buy the CD set when it was released and truly enjoyed it. BUT, how necessary is it to get the DVD of the show when one already has HEARD it? Is watching Elaine's facial expressions and body language imperative for enjoying the show any more than I already have?

I have heard the CD and saw Miss Stritch when she did her show here in Los Angeles.  Something that was in the show I saw and not on the CD was an extended tale of Miss Stritch's appearance in The Women with, among others, Miss Marge Champion and Miss Gloria Swanson.  It's probably not on the CD (assuming this story was included in the off-Broadway run) because a good portion of the tale--and its "punchline"--is told visually.

Now, not having seen the DVD, I don't know if this story appears on it.  If it does, it's probably worth the money, especially since you'll also get to see the original choreography for Civilization to boot!

Well, of course, if the DVD had been available when I saw the CDs, naturally there would have been no contest. I would have gotten the DVD version. I was just wondering since I've already invested $$$ in the CDs and have heard the show, do I need to spend more $$$ just to SEE her deliver the lines I already now know so well. So far I've resisted the temptation to purchase.

DR MattH  --  I guess I have to cast a vote for "definitely get the Elaine Stritch DVD" IMHO.  I went with DR Kerry over to LA to see the show, and it was one of the most engrossing, enjoyable evenings I have spent at the theatre.  DR Kerry had already flown all the way to NYC to see the show there (it wasn't sure that it would tour at that stage) and he couldn't wait to see it again in LA.

The CD is good, but that wonderful Stritch face has a lot of earned mileage on it, and it makes her stories and anecdotes all the more poignant.  By the way, she was also incredibly gracious and nice to those of us who wanted to see her after the show.

Good day, all!  One of the nice things about being a substitute teacher... plenty of variety in my daily routine.  This week I've already taught high school wood shop and junior high algebra, and shall be doing high school choir (my actual area of specialty) tomorrow.  Can't complain of boredom by repetition!

Never broken a bone (looking for any nearby wood to knock on).  In fact, never had any need for a hospital since I was born.  Never had any dental problems either, aside from the standard removal of the wisdom teeth.

Boring shows... hmmm... All that comes to mind are a couple lousy productions that drove the material into the ground.  In particular, one of Carousel and one of Sound of Music (my apologies to DR Ann, who was a nun in said blecchy production of SOM).  My mother, on the other hand, fell asleep just a few minutes into Grand Hotel, woke up at intermission, and instantly fell asleep again as Act II started.

Better late than never.  My monitor blew last night, so I've been computerless for a half day.  Now five hundred-odd dollars later, I have a sleek new flat screen monitor that takes up a lot less desk space.  Thank god, it's a business write-off.

Broke my arm when I was nine rolling skating in the basement.  String wound around the axle of the skate and a bit dragging on the ground stopped the wheel and threw me up in the air.  I came up with a bent left arm.  I thought I had maimed myself for life.  I did learn how to write right-handed, however.  Don't think I can anymore though.

If I could visit one place, I'd like to visit the rest of the British Isles.  The lovely wife and I go to England every year, but we never really get outside of London, because I'm booking theatre from the moment we get in.  Except for a few brief excusions to Canterbury, York, the Yorkshire Moors, Whitby, and Robin Hood's Bay on the North Sea (all of which I'd like to see again), I've still got a lot of castles, relics, and cities as well as Scotland and Wales and Ireland to do.  I'd really like to visit Hay-On-Wye, a town of bookshops in Wales.  I don't particularly like to go anywhere they don't speak my language.

Most boring show was also the most irritating show.  Nicol Williamson doing a one-man show about John Barrymore, that made no pretense to give either the look or real flavour of Barrymore.  It was mostly Williamson giving a self-indulgent, smug, flatulent, undisciplined performance where he groped for lines, did what he wanted and tried in the most loose way to incorporate Barrymore in it.  It was the height of masturbatory theatre and he showed great contempt for his audience.  The truly disgusting part was these fools in LA gave him a standing ovation.  I resolutely refused to stand or applaud.  Had I a piece of fruit I would have thrown it.  I think I did hiss.  Thank God, I got to see Christopher Plummer's masterful portrayal later to take the bad taste out of my mouth.  Barrymore looked as though he had inhabited Plummer.

As far as the breaking of the bones........(it sounds like a weird Eastern ritual)...

I've been extremely lucky for all of my very brief years so far, and never broken anything.  It is pretty amazing , considering that my older brother ran my right hand all the way into an old-fashioned "2 roller" wringer that sat above early washing machines.  This was when I was around 6 or 7.  He was a caring sibling... :-X

Re: Don Grady

I visited a website that seems to have his sponsorship and looked at his Bio page.  I was a bit confused about MusicGuy's use of "Granidetti" when Don's sister, Lani, went by "O'Grady".

What I found was this:

http://www.mousestars.com/steve/dongrady/dgmain.htm

It gives his real name as Don Agrati, which seems to lend itself to anglicizing as both Grady and O'Grady.

But, it might be wrong....

We are one week away from DR Jason's natal day and we are one day away from the opening of The Scottish Play. I'd say Break a Leg but since this play may be cursed, I wouldn't want anything literal to happen. At least it's not opening on Friday the 13th.

I was involved in a Friday the 13th opening night once (for The Mouse That Roared).  Wouldn't ya know, the light board blew 30 minutes before curtain, and we ended up doing the show with some house lights and two spots.  Ahhh, the joys of theatre!

Hey DR Emily. Let me know if you find anything interesting at amazon.ca.  I did notice they have this month's Boy From Oz.  But what I really want is next month's Wicked (although I suppose it's too early for THEM to list it).

Did anyone catch Kristin and Idina on the Today show? I really enjoyed it.

Wowee wow-wow!  I can't wait to enjoy all these goodies!

I was only able to tape the second and third hours (not the first) and won't be able to check until late tonight to see if I caught it.  I hope that they didn't try to sing sometime in the first hour.  Aside from me (potentially) missing their performance(s?), that's just too damned early for anyone to try and sing.

Whew!  LOL - let me know the reactions DR Maya1

No DR Danise - DR Jennifer didn't tell me the joke.  I heard it several years ago!

Don Agrati is indeed Don Grady...and yes poor Lani suffered some bad times before joining the choir invisible.

On TCM they are showing the newsreel footage of the premiere of THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT...what a lot of stars!

And oy oy oy - my GYPSY cd came today....Rosalind Russell singing oy oy oy.  You know of course she has the biggest memorial in Holy Cross Cemetery.  Any taller and they would have to put an airplane warning light on it.

Here in the east the Today show is on from 7am to 10am. They were on in the 8:30am half hour (probably around 8:50am). Kristin sang "Popular". Then they spoke to them for a minute or two after the 9am break.

So according to what I just said, I think you must have gotten it.

I'm finally back (althogh I guess, technically I never left...)!

Fast catch-up of the last week or so: I did get a job, and I have started said job. I'm a waitress/"receptionist"/busgirl at a local cafe/restaruant. I HATE answering the phone, I don't mind bus-ing, and I LOVE waitressing. It's good exercize! (I spelled that wrong, oh well) The people I work with are really nice, they taught me what to do really well, because I automatically got the hang of it. I'm working Friday and Saturday nights, and Sunday mornings. Yay for money! Oh, another cool thing about the people there is that they all speak like 5 languaes, I think Arabic, French, English, Spanish, and German. How cool is that? And there I am, the American saying "Je parle francais! Un peu! Un peu!" :)

I also had All-County Chorus last weekend, with Dr. Judy Bowers from Florida State as my director. I did NOT like her whatsoever. Half of being a choral director is being smart about what you do. The other half is having the ability to have fun with the students and teach them so that you're all happy and the performance is entertaining. This woman has no people skills at all. And she's my director for All-District too, which is in March. So I have MORE fun to look forward to! ;).

Tom: I broke my little toes all the time. I seriously bet I've broken each 5 times. I'm just a clutz, I suppose. But after a week, they're pretty much healed, so what can you do? And I think I sprained my finger playing dodgeball in 2nd or 3rd grade. Traumatizing, as I'm sure you could tell.

Emily: Out of the country, I'd love to go to South America, anywhere warm. The rainforest would be amazing (except for the bugs...ew). In the country, NYC. That would actually come before South America.

Most boring job: Well, I'm going by babysitting jobs here. I once babysat a family of 5 kids, and all they wanted to do was read. No TV, no games, no toys. Just read books. The whole time. I was dying from boredom. So I picked up a book and read with them.

Oh, and this won't make sense to anyone but Laura II: I'm pretty sure that Ms. V kicked Chris out of SS. IM me for details.

Boring shows: A few years ago I went to see Smokey Joe's Cafe with my grandmother.  Maybe it was because I hadn't slept well the night before, but I dozed off several times during the show.  Grandma, however, loved it, so it was fine.

I also saw the production of Martin Guerre in London some time ago, and found it dreadfully dull.

DR Jane, my relatives are either in Hawaii or San Francisco.  My mother has taken to coming at least once a year to see theatre and shop, and a few others are often in town on business, so I have the excuse to go out to dinner with them.  Since we are talking about travel, I go home to Hawaii every year for the holidays, so you are all welcome to come have a tropical H/K party with me!

For Queer Eye fans: I don't want to put the site into Cinemascope, so I will link to this computer-related cartoon, which I found hilarious:

http://www.joyoftech.com/joyoftech/joyimages/502.gif

I don't want those guys anywhere NEAR my computer!  :P

Oops...( or Spoo)... :o

I forgot to answer the  "most unusual job" question.

Just out of high school, and on my own for the first time, I took a night job with a company that a friend of mine owned.  It was called a "Mortuary Accomodation Service."  He also was a pretty good amateur organist but wanted me to teach him further.

So, in the early evening I would coach him and give him playing tips at the organ.....and then between midnight and 6:00 AM, I was on call to go out and pick up the bodies of folks who had passed away, and take them to whichever mortuary they were assigned to.

Yep, pretty unusual........

Welcome back Swishy Sarah.  Great job on your grades!
Since my second favorite pastime, next to hiking, is reading I would have found that to be a very interesting job.  I once sat for around eight children.  I started with three and the numbers just kept growing.  They were all horrible and bigger than I was.  Reading would have been a blessing.

LC I think you have two wonderful places to visit your relatives.

I have been on a three day eating binge and am sick.  This must really stop.  It started when I began baking on Monday.  Since I first left for L.A. in July, thanks to the stress I had been under, I had trouble keeping my weight up.  When I did eat I could have what ever I wanted-it was great.  Guess that just ended.  Watching what I will eat or big time stress-tough decision, but I suppose I will take the first option of the two.  Kidding aside, friends keep telling me I look more relaxed and happier now and they are right.

Swishy--WELCOME BACK!!!  I'm sorry to hear about your chorus teacher.  Unfortunately, I can relate.  I didn't take chorus in high school after my freshman year because the teacher was a phony b...uh, let's just say it rhymes with witch.  She looked like a kewpie doll (and not in the cute Bernadette way either) and had all the sincerity and kindness of one too.

LC--I saw Martin Guerre too on the Pre-Broadway try-out.  I loved Les Miz.  I loved Miss Saigon.  You were right...this one just sucked.

Jed--I'm the resident celebration choreographer???   :o  Really, I had NO idea of that.  I'm just going to forget then that I'm not a good dancer while I choreograph the following dance.

A Quiet Thing

When it all come true
Just the way you planned
It's funny but the bells don't ring
It's a quiet thing
When you hold the world
In your trembling hand
You think you'd hear a choir singing
But it's a quiet thing
There are no exploding fire works
Where's the roaring of the crowd
Maybe it's the strange new atmosphere
Way up here among the clouds

Happiness comes in on tiptoe
Well, what do you know
It's a quiet thing
A very quiet thing...

I think that this is my favorite Kander and Ebb song

The most boring musical I ever sat through was one called The River; I think it was at the Promenade.

Like DR Matt, I was thoroughly bored by Miss Saigon after enjoying Les Miserables.  On Broadway, a show called The 1940's Radio Hour made the mistake of putting a huge clock on stage.  I stared at it the entire time, swearing that technicians must be making it go slower than real time.

Another famous musical that bored me to tears was the incessantly tear-jerking The Secret Garden, which I caught in Orlando, of all places.  It boasts self-pitying characters of every gender and age group.

There was a jazz album of How to Succeed and I think it may have been released on CD but I can't remember.  I did have the LP at one time - I'll nose around the CD closet and see what I can come up with.

I'm sure the mix balance is what it always was - remember, if they didn't get it right when they recorded it, then it would not be easy to fix as the recordings were done on three track tape back then.  The problem in those recordings is that the band and the singers are together and if they didn't have any separation then the band goes in to the singer's mics and so if you raise the volume of the singer you raise the volume of the band, too.  I'll give a listen to the older CD.

DR MDS, Bonnie Scott played Ann Marie's (Marlo Thomas') best friend on THAT GIRL for several seasons.

I've got the first CD issue of HOW TO SUCCEED, and I don't remember anything wrong with the balance between his vocal and the orchestra, but I'll slide over to the shelf and put it in as I type.

Nope. Michael, I didn't hear any problem on that CD (well, other than Morse's slight tendency to go sharp at the ends of phrases).

Slight tendency to go sharp, Matt?  Isn't that like saying that the Titanic had a slight tendency to take on water?

Well, Robert Morse's effervescence makes up for lots of small technical mistakes. Also, the tradition is to record these cast albums on the first SUnday after the opening, and often people are just exhausted which can also have a negative effect on their performances.

I do prefer his vocals (and Michele Lee's) in the film, but because many numbers were cut, this is all we have of that original performance.

No Kerry. Unless you count the posts from MusicGuy. I went back through the archives last night and read some of your posts from two years ago. (I was checking to see who had survived all this time)

Would you believe this is the third time I have tried to post: "Congratulations Jane, I hope you enjoy your new status on the board. Did the change come with bells and whistles or was it "A Quiet Thing"?

It was so quiet I almost missed it.

Hi all! First of all, a big thank you to the Karma Fairy! Second, it's great to see you back, Sawah! It's been an interesting night, and I don't have too much to say. I do have one favor to ask. If you guys wouldn't mind, would you please keep the family and friends of a young man named Dan in your thoughts? He was an acquaintance of one of my best friends at her college, and he committed suicide. Needless to say, many people are still reeling from this tragedy. A huge thank you in advance for your thoughts and prayers.

Let me just say, on behalf of Robert Morse's time in "Wicked", that his rendition of "Wonderful" here in San Francisco was phenomenal compared to what I saw of Joel Grey's performance of same song on the Broadway.com clip. Morse brings out the melody in rounded tones.  Grey seems to be having trouble with it.

But maybe I'll wait until I hear the already-ordered cast album before making my mind up.

Speaking of which:

amazon.ca -- I couldn't for the life of me figure out what the heck Amazon was doing with a California-only website.

Oh, Canada, though.  Oh, Canada!

Another Washington hello!

Maya - I knew I could count on you for a truly fantabulous celebration dance!  Many flirty thanks. :D

MDS - I agree, A Quiet Thing is certainly my favorite Kander & Ebb song.  One of our NW vocal jazz gurus, Dave Barduhn, did a truly sumptuous a capella arrangement of it.  One of my favorite charts I've sung in all my years of vocal jazz.

Now that's what I call "in depth" posting. Will anyone be able to keep up with the standard we are setting? Hope you are feeling better Ann. Are there any more tests on the horizon? And now for the sparkle and wit of DR Jed.......

Sparkle and wit, eh Tom?  Hmm... well, I know I can do warkle and spit, but I'll see what I can do on your request.

There may be no shattered record today, but it is now the third MOST-productive posting day under the new format.

And the race toward whatever continues apace.....

Well, I have an early morning tomorrow, so I must be getting myself to bed.

I shall be errant and truant for the next few days, as I shall be out of town and away from my computer.  Tomorrow night I shall be attending a dedication ceremony in which a university theater shall be named after my very own grandfather, so that's good.  And later on this weekend I shall be seeing She Loves Me with our very own DR Ann!

I trust I will have a tremendous amount of catching up to do when I return!  See all y'all Sunday or Monday!

How nice to have a night with no stress to speak of.
No tests for a while now...a few papers to worry about, but not tonight.  And my boss is taking the kids to the doctor tomorrow so hopefully we'll find out why they've been sick for so long.  Although I have a clue...I caught her throwing out a few bottles of anitbiotics that she'd neglected to FINISH giving to her five year old, thinking "he doesn't need them anymore"  Doesn't she understand that when you don't finish a run of antibiotics, it screws everything up?
Off to bed now...'night all

TCB - I like the picture!  Hopefully I'll take a better one of DR Jed this weekend with my digital so we can post a better one of him...and if I'm having a good hair day, we might get a new one of me!

Still hacking away here in Studio City.  The evening is young, which is more than I can say.  Let's post until midnight at which time the cows will be home and we can take a break and/or post to the new notes.

Good eve, all. I'm finally home for the evening. Work was a little better post-lunch as I didn't have to see the Dragon Lady anymore and I had my headphones on for the rest of the afternoon, and for some reason (probably because I was tired), it seemed to take Mimi YEARS to die at the opera. Oh, well...I got enough in tips to pay for lunch tomorrow. Yay me.

And I got checked out by two--count 'em TWO--very attractive people tonight on the subway. I was quite surprised and flattered. :) And I turn 27 in six days.

That is absolutely NOT me!! A friend of mine forwarded that photo to me a few weeks back and it makes me laugh so much that I put it in my profile.

Shows that I nearly slept through: BIG, BOUNCE, URBAN COWBOY and I AM MY OWN WIFE.  I also slept through FIDDLER ON THE ROOF with Topol and CAMELOT with Richard Harris...of course, I was only 7 then and I could kick myself for it now.

By the way, Jason...check out Broadway.com....there's a video there for "Wicked" -- some opening night videos mixed with clips from the show.

The URL is posted elsewhere in today's posts, but it should be easy enough to find at Broadway.com.  Just check out the menu bar under "Multimedia".  It's quite a nice piece.

According to Netflix, I should be receiving MURDER BY DEATH in the mail tomorrow. Yay me!

Ron: Thanks for the WICKED info. I cannot wait for the CD to be released. I want to see the show again very soon because I did love it so.

By the by...the DVD of Hugh Jackman in OKLAHOMA! is now available at the Tower Records at Lincoln Center. According to Netflix it isn't supposed to be released until the 18th, but there it was! I didn't get it, but I will eventually. And wasn't the cast recording of BOY FROM OZ due out yesterday? I didn't find it anywhere...

It's due out any day now.

The "Wicked" cast recorded their album yesterday (Nov. 11th). The CD is due out Dec. 16th.  Amazon.com has pre-order price of $13.99.

Well, I'm still here (a Sondheim reference), but not for long...and, actually, I haven't been here this evening for too long.

Anyway, today I received the two albums that I won on eBay:  Philemon by Schmidt & Jones and the London cast of  Where's Charlie by Frank Loesser ... and dagnabbit, I already have that on CD.  I hate it when I do that.  So, I'll try to listen to Philemon this weekend.  I'm going up to Seattle on Saturday, so that's out.  Maybe Friday night or Sunday.  We'll see.  'Night all.
