Title: HORMONES RUN AMOK

Well, you've read the notes, you and your hormones have run amok having read the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - their hormones are currently running amok, and the cows are mooing each other like crazy.

Nat King Cole: When I Fall in Love, Mona Lisa

I like "Mona Lisa" but "When I Fall in Love" is one of my absolute all-time favorite songs ever!  A couple of years ago, I was taking a group voice class/workshop with this incredible jazz pianist, Joe Baque, and I came up with this unique idea for a two-song medley.  I started with "When I Fall in Love" and then went into "A Quiet Thing" by Kander and Ebb.  My take on it was that they both started on the same note (B-flat) but of course, they were in two different keys.  Joe figured out this wonderful bridge between the two songs that worked itself through the key change so that the second song started on the same B-flat in a completely different key.  I never got to perform it, though.  Our class/workshop split up before we were able to finish working on it.  But I love the song!

Gee whiz, I have a lot of catching up to do. Been runnning amok myself here in Northern California, including a fine dim sum lunch with the great Ron Pulliam a few days back. Been missing y'all and will accept my bitchslap with openly bitchslapped arms.

Many family events, gatherings, outings and whatnot, little access to a decent computation device. I shall be back in the York of New on July 4. Then the catching up begins in earnest.

In the meantime, three great singers. And my favorites jump right to mind...
Como: Glendora and Magic Moments
Cole: That Sunday That Summer
Jones: Lady

More Jack Jones: Two deep cuts from the Lady LP: Brother  Where Are You? and Girl Talk. Those are good stuff.

And the word of the day is: MILQUETOAST!
Milque can be found on aisle one; toast is in the bakery section.  (Takes a grocery store man to know these things!)

I've proof that the job is settling in, or that I'm settling into the job.  I've been dreaming about the place for the last three or four nights.  No, this is not the stuff of nightmares, it's actually good news, because it means that all the tricks of the trade are sinking in, becoming second nature to me now, like breathing out and breathing in in my best Rex Harrison impersonation.

Today is going to be especially busy, as the weekend crowd comes in and stocks up their larders.  That's all right, I'm feeling happy.

While haunting a thrift shop in Berkeley, I found a cast LP from a Kander and Ebb show called "70 Girls 70". Anyone know anything about this?

70 GIRLS 70 is one of my favorite scores.  When I met Mildred Natwick, I told her how much I loved the elephant song.  One of my best friends from college was the assistant to costumer Jane Greenwood; he claims that if David Burns hadn't died in Philadelphia (causing the recasting of Hans Conreid) that the musical would still be running.  He said David Burns was brilliant and that there wasn't enough time to readjust/tailor the material to Conreid's very different approach.

Good morning, all!  I have to pick up three days' worth of mail at the PO and then head to the recording office to drop off my LoC materials.  Back later.

Great, fun score.  Don't know much about how the script runs, but the LP doesn't have the script on it, does it!

"Coffee in a Cardboard Cup" was brought back in And the World Goes 'Round, the Kander and Ebb review.  I also enjoy "The Elephant Song" and "Go Visit Your Grandmother," which includes the lyric "You went to Fire Island this summer?/For God's sake show her the photograph!"  And "Boom Ditty Boom" is a perfect case of a Kander vamp being stretched into a complete number.  Yes, Rodzinsky, if you can snag that LP and have fun!

Have to get ready for work.

I'm having to laugh, however, at customers with their cell phone addictions.  I used to think they were having severe ear aches, what with holding their hands to their ears all the time, but yesterday a woman came in, having a complete conversation while checking out, using one of those mike-and-earplug contraptions.  I couldn't tell when she was talking to me or to the other end of the line.  It was obviously just as confusing to the other end of the line, because she had to explain that some of the conversation was with me!

Just as ridiculous was the couple who were engaged in separate conversations on separate cell phones.  While using his free hand to communicate with me.  Does this couple ever talk with each other?  Intimately, over a dinner table?  What happens when, in the middle of said conversation, one of them has their minutes run out?  Such is intimacy in the new millenium.

All for now, time to get showered and pressed and on to work!

I like all three singers.  Very underrated,  really.  It's easy to forget how pleasant almost all of their stuff is.

For Jack Jones, it would have to be "Wives and Lovers" and "Lollipops and Roses."

Nat King Cole:  "That Sunday That Summer" and that wonderful Gordon Jenkins' arrangement of "Stardust."  I like "Nature Boy" too.

Perry Como- "Glendora" and "Catch A Falling Star."  "Magic Moments" is catchy.

Luckily all three didn't get stuck with so much of that gimmicky crud that Mitch Miller foisted upon the world (and which many artists were forced to perform to compete).

Will meet up with Mark and James in Wilsonville for breakfast. We would carpool but they are only staying at the lake for the day while I will spend the night there...besides Mark hates the music I listen to in the car... and I tend to turn up the volume just to annoy him.

Perry Como - Till the End of Time, Glendora, Catch a Falling Star

Perry Como sang a grand rendition of Rodgers and Hart's "Mountain Greenery" in WORDS AND MUSIC, and it has ALWAYS been one of my favorite songs by him. Otherwise, the usual suspects: "Maginc Moments," "Catch a Falling Star," "Round and Round."

The Perry Como section of FOREVER PLAID was always a fun part of the show, and I enjoyed singing all of the songs in it.

Rehearsal was OKAY last night - some tech problems caused by a teenager who knows EVERYTHING and spends more time blaming someone else when she makes a mistake than just saying, I made a mistake - and contradicting me, which is NOT a good idea, she found out.

It would be a terrible tragedy if she quit.

As for Nat King Cole, I liked him, but not as much as Como (whose TV show I never missed).

"Mona Lisa" certainly stays in my memory, and I liked the ballad of CAT BALLOU, too. "Unforgettable," yep. I'm sure there are others, but I don't have many records around here with his vocals, so perhaps I should do some research.

Jack Jones: the theme from THE LOVE BOAT would be one of my favorites as well as "Lollipops and Roses."

However, I'm actually more a fan of his father's work - the 1936 movie SHOW BOAT, "Alone" in A NIGHT AT THE OPERA, etc.

OMG DR MATTH - I also love Como's version of MOUNTAIN GREENERY, had forgotten all about it.  Wow!

Song stylists.

OF course then there is also Vic Damone... and Matt Munro.  A brief listen to any recording made by any of these guys would show how really awful the "singers" on a show like American Idol really are....ugh.

Warner Bros. has announced The Adventures of Superman: The Complete First Season for release on 10/18 (SRP $39.98). The 5-disc set will include all 26 first-season episodes of the classic, 1950s series, which starred George Reeves.

On September 6th, Paramount is releasing quite a few classics, but the two I thought would be of particular interest:

and

the much-requested 1954 musical RED GARTERS !!!!!

70 Girls 70 is one of my favorite K&E scores, too.  Rodzinski, it's based on the old film "Make Mine Mink," though the musical has a "play within a play" format.  And actually, the first pressing of the LP at least had a little insert that gave a precis and also had cast info.  A CD was released years ago, you can probably find it on eBay or used record stores.  Speaking of which, I found a used LP copy here in Portland that evidently belonged to none other than Dorothea Freitag (care to speculate on how that happened, Elmore?).  Not only did it have her signature and a bunch of handwritten notes inside, the insert had a bunch of her little notations, too.  Like an idiot, I sold it years ago.

Liza does a great version of "Yes" on "Liza with a Z".  Fantastic orchestration.

I had a chance to watch MIN AND BILL late this morning. I was right; I had never seen the whole thing. Marie Dressler was beloved in her time, and she could certainly mix the pathos with knockabout comedy effortlessly, but the writing and acting and camerwork are fairly primitive compared with acting and production just a few years later.

It's a famous film, but I'm not sure it has stood the test of time so well. I'd rather see Dressler in DINNER AT EIGHT or EMMA.

I really find it hard to believe some producer(s) is/are going to risk millions on THE WOMAN IN WHITE on Broadway. Do they REALLY think that after a truly American iconic story turned musical like SUNSET BLVD. didn't make a dime that folks are going to be rushing to see this British gothic mystery musical (even if Lloyd Webber did write the music). Are they aware that the man has had a huge string of Broadway flops since PHANTOM? Haven't they looked at the grosses of the movie of PHANTOM? I think Lloyd Webber is basically over in this country as far as new material is concerned.

But I've been wrong before.

I think people will only remember the "clever" (but eventually tiresome) use of projected scenery, the comic song in Act 2 and the Train scene (sort of recycled from "Whistle Down The Wind") when they leave the theatre. I truly wanted it to be a success and it was far worse than "The Beautiful Game" which at least did not rely on scenery and gimmicks.

As I have written before - the show really lost me when they recycled "Tell Me On A Sunday" melodies appeared half way through Act One. The show is DULL.
BTW I didn't like "Woman In White" at all. It made "Aspects Of Love" look like a true work of art.

Once again RLP has returned - hopefully to tell us about his Cruise experience.

How do I discuss "The War of the Worlds" without giving away spoilers???

I thought it extremely thrilling, beautifully acted and filled with horrific images that shall haunt me for some time.

Tom Cruise...despite EVERYTHING...has never been more mature, more affecting, more effective or better than he is in this movie.  He stunned me!

And I'm not particularly a Cruise fan.

Dakota Fanning is just wonderful.  What a fine young actress.

I've been involved in discussion about various aspects of the film with folks who have seen it and hated it, seen it and liked it and seen it and loved it.

Some say Spielberg is back to form...and cite "Jurassic Park" as their model.   This is way better than "Jurassic Park."  It's a reimagining of the classic story in that there is a different point of view.

There IS a huge (to me) credibility issue with just WHERE those darned tripods came from...and WHEN...and why NOW???...but it's a MOVIE-MOVIE and one hell of a thrill ride!

I don't think A Woman In White will do well on Broadway, either.  I like the recorded score, but it's not one that I've listened to very much.  Also, the show seems very British and not the kind of show that American audiences will feel that they need to see.  Just my 2˘.

Lloyd Webber makes a zillion dollars a day; he produced the dreadful BOMBAY DREAMS, and he'll probably produce THE WOMAN IN WHITE to say it ran in Broadway.  Then, some community theatres who don't think his work stinks will do it, just as they do all his other turkeys.

Too true DR Matthew. What do I know anyway - I like "Evita" and "Whistle Down the Wind"! I've not seen a production of "Whistle" but I've seen all the other ALW shows. I saw "Cats" thrice and enjoyed it! (Just don't let anyone here know that!)

My tastes don't necessarily run to the popular. I thought the score for "Seussical" was so much better than "The Producers" though I enjoyed both shows. I thought "Full Monty" had a better score than "The Producers" too. Such are the tastes of someone who doesn't play a musical instrument.

For some reason, I had it in my mind that Lloyd Webber wasn't personally financing his shows any more, that he was using his name to attract OTHERS to invest in his shows.

I know that he supposedly did finance $75 million for the film version of PHANTOM so it could be just as he wanted it, but I'm not sure about his shows any more and how they're financed.

Try and locate the DVD of the film of "Whistle" with the delightful Hayley. My fondness for the innocence of the story and the characters has remained for 40 years. The book of the musical created havoc with the warmth of that film.

Welcome to the world of film music discussion!  THIS Horner issue -- his tendency to repeat himself ad infinitum -- is one of the most frequent complaints about him.

No one who loves movies -- and who actually hears the music in the movie -- appreciates being ripped out of something like "Troy" and deposited into outer space because they've heard the same bits before in a "Star Trek" film.

But that's our little Jamie Horner...

But I will give him props on that entire sequence that shows the fleet of the Greek states at sail that segues to the triumphal arrival of Helen and Paris into Troy....totally thrilling music.

Hmmm, my dad saw War Of the Worlds and really did not like it.  Apparently my brother-in-law's sister took her kids to see it and they didn't like it!  (the little boy just turned 5 so i was kinda shocked they took him). I'm assuming this one is really not for kids, right?  (he had to leave with grandma).

The fireworks from last night were rescheduled to tonight (thunderstorms).  We arrived only 5 minutes before they were to begin and we got separated. We were in 3 cars, and of course the car unfamiliar with the area got separated from the others.  When I called them to ask where they were they had a hard time explaining (saying they were at some school). Well the only school I knew of was 2 miles away.

So we watched the fireworks separately (i had their 10 yr old daughter with me). And we found them afterwards.  It turns out they were only about 1 block away (not at a school though).

As I was trying to explain where we were I said on the corner of Lake, in front of the grocery store, and right beside the firetruck.  Eventually the mom says "well we are in front of the firetruck but we don't see you". It turns out they were on the other side of it so we couldn't see each other. :)

Here's the short version:

Woke up at 5:00 - Got about two hours of sleep.

My father was kind enough to drive me to Union Station this morning so that I could catch the 6:20 train to Penn Station.  The train left on time, and arrived in NYC on time too!  It was a relatively uneventful ride, although I happened to be sitting in a car with a bunch of college-age kids who were heading up to Philly for the Live 8 Concert.  They were quite vocal for about the first 45 minutes of the trip - lots of "that was the sh*t", "those f*cking thats", etc.  But the all eventually zonked out by 7:00.

Ah, the quiet.

Once at Penn Station, I made my way to subway platform to catch the C uptown to 4nd Street - just one stop.  Then I took the long subterranean walk to the the other 7th Ave side of the station where I grabbed the S train, the shuttle to Grand Central Station.

After a stop at Junior's for a Black & White and a mini Chocolate Swirl Cheesecake - a.k.a. The True Breakfast of Champions - I grabbed the Metro North Train at 10:51 to Poughkeepsie.

It was my first time on the Hudson River Line.  And what a perfect day for training along the Hudson River.  So beautiful.  I know what I shall be doing on those days when I'm itching for a bit of nature.  And the train fare is rather reasonable too!

Billy Joel's "New York State of Mind" was happily haunting me during the trip.  Hudson River Line.  Cold Spring.  Etc.

And once I got to Poughkeepise...

As soon as I stepped out of the train station at Poughkeepsie, one of the company mangagement interns, Spring, greeted me, and whisked me off to the Vassar campus.

After meeting the company management staff, I headed over to my room.  My dorm room.  And it's a real old-fashoined  dorm room, in an old-fashioned building.  Shared bathrooms each floor.  Men on one side of the building.  Women on the other.  I'm staying in a two-room 'suite" that has four twin beds in it.  -The kind with the plastic covered mattresses and the metal springs.  And those very sturdy and heavy wooden school desks.  I do have ethernet access - no wireless as I had thought - but since I did not bring an ethernet cable with me... No biggie.  As I mentioned previously, I found the computer lab in this dorm, and that's where I'm hooked into now.

But I digress...

A friend loaned me TROY on DVD a couple of months ago. It has sat on my counter all that time, and now tonight it's premiering on HBO. Oops. I might as well hand the DVD back to him. I meant to flip over to it tonight on HBO-HD to see if HBO-HD was showing a full frame or widescreen version in high definition. You can never predict how HBO will present a movie in high def. Sometimes it is with the proper aspect ration and other times it's a cropped version in high definition.

I never got around to seeing anything on TV tonight , so I'll have to wait for the next showing on HBO-HD to see what they're doing with it.

Yes, but I prefer a show with something more than drivel for music, and I think Lloyd Webber's a very successful third-rate composer who doesn't know what to do with a good tune once he creates it or steals it.

Then I was whisked off to the Deli where I picked up a Spicy Italian for my lunch.  Then I joined the company after their lunch break...

:)

I'm gonna have a great time while I'm here.  First of all, it was great seeing Brad Haak again.  He was my conductor for Children of Eden last year - and he's the one who put the wheels in motion to get me up here.  Just such a great guy all around.  Very talented.  Great biceps and pecs too!

;)

I was then introduced to the company.  One of the guys in the cast remembered me from his SETC audition days. Oh, and Emily Skinner is in the cast too.  As well as Wayne Wilcox (he did PIAZZA in Seattle and Chicago), Joseph Kolinski (one of my all-time favorite Broadway voices of all time!), etc...  I'll post a cast list sometime later when I'm not so braindead....

In any case...

I basically sat back and watched.  This is a workshop production, so lots of editing and rewriting and restructuring going on.  Tomorrow, I shall be the MD-in-absentia - or something like that - while Brad heads down to Philly to meet with Sir Elton John about Lestat.

Well, excited and scared...

Last year, I got some locally filmed and produced movies from Netflix.  I made copies of them because a co-worker (Carole) and another friend of mine (Karen) are in a couple of them!  Anyway, Carole borrowed them earlier this year and finally gave them back to me.  But when I got them, the cases and the paper inserts had gotten wet and are kind of icky. :P Fortunately, the discs themselves are all okay.  Now, I'm making copies for Carole because she never got copies after they were originally released, so that's all taking quite a bit of time.  I'm also making brand new inserts (which I made in the first place because I got them from Netflix).  All of this is also making my computer slow down.  I just hope that my working and playing Free Cell while I copying and burning the DVDs doesn't adversly affect the discs.  We'll see!

ATTN: DR MBARNUM

*And, please, someone "remind" him about what I'm about to post when he's back from hunting bares bare...

I watched KWHAWISH - or however it's spelled - today while I was on the train on my laptop.  Nice movie.  A little longer than expected, but fun.  However, the leading man needed to spend more time in his underwear.

;)

BUT I FINALLY WATCHED A BOLLYWOOD MOVIE!!!

;D

I'm gonna have a great time while I'm here.  First of all, it was great seeing Brad Haak again.  He was my conductor for Children of Eden last year - and he's the one who put the wheels in motion to get me up here.  Just such a great guy all around.  Very talented.  Great biceps and pecs too!

;)

I was then introduced to the company.  One of the guys in the cast remembered me from his SETC audition days. Oh, and Emily Skinner is in the cast too....

I LOVE EMILY SKINNER!!  Jose, how long will you be with the show?

Well, I need to free up this ethernet connection here in the lab...

I should be back on in the morning before heading to rehearsal - 11:00-7:00 tomorrow.

Until then...

Laters...

*And maybe I'll remember which posts I wanted to respond too too come morning.

Goodnight.

This is a workshop.  They started rehearsal last week.  They go up next Thursday just for three or four shows.  That's it.  The link I posted yesterday should have the info.

DR Tom, as I was currently vacuuming the apartment, I was singing both said melody's back to back.  While the rhythms and feel are the same, the music is definately not.  But I can see how you could think it was due to the feel of each passage.

Remember I'm not a musician Matthew. I think "Bounce" sounds like everything else by SS too.
The two people next to me at the theatre for WiW thought the same. Been there - done that.
Similar is a good as same to me.

BTW "After the same Man" is a good enough quote for me too!!

Love Amanda McBroom.  I just wasted over an hour playing that stupid game I haven't played in over a year - you know, that Bookworm game.  I don't know why I started.  Even though I was still going strong with over 500,000 points, I finally just closed it down.

There's something out of character about this statement...

Woody, the Santinis are a large moving company in NYC.
The line still made sense to me.   ;D

And, given the amount of trash generated in NYC... ::)

Try and locate the DVD of the film of "Whistle" with the delightful Hayley. My fondness for the innocence of the story and the characters has remained for 40 years. The book of the musical created havoc with the warmth of that film.
I have to look at the film and musical as two different animals indeed.

Would one of those animals be

 CATS?

Then I was whisked off to the Deli where I picked up a Spicy Italian for my lunch.  Then I joined the company after their lunch break...

:)

Well?  What was his name???

And speaking of spicy Italians, I watched "The Roman Spring Of Mrs Stone"(the remake) last night.
Why did they bother? I've not seen the original but can't imagine Beatty as the Gigalo.

The film is rated PG-13, 14A in Canada.  Give them a rousing "Well, Duh!" next time you see them.

Mr Cruise's private life and "informed opinions" will not keep me away from the film. I quite liked "The Minority Report" but then it was not really an actor's film.
Normally, I wouldn't judge a film by an actor's personal opinions, either.  However, the timing of Mr. Cruise's statements about depression, combined with my personal experience with the disease, have turned me off at this time.  I'll wait for the DVD to see the film.

I play it every once in a while and it's STILL addicting!  The most I've ever gotten is around 92,000, though.

Just back for a week. I should be back full swing August 6th, but it may be later as I am thinking of doing a quick trip to New York before school starts in August.

TOD: The only one I can really comment on is Nat King Cole. I picked up a cheap 3 cd set of his music for ten dollars at Sam Goody back in December. I of course love his rendition of The Christmas Song and his version of Nature Boy gets a lot of play because I love the song and his is the only version I have.

DRJOEY glad your toe is doing fine.

DRJOSE - one of my favorite lines....well excited and scared.

"But at seventeen to Vassar it was quite a blow, that in twenty-seven languages, she couldn't say 'no'!"

I have the TROY widescreen edition DVD, and I like the movie - the story is mangled, or the legend is mangled, whichever - but it is fun to watch.   And everybody looks good.

DRJOSE if that movie was less than two and half hours long - it was a SHORT Bollywood movie.

It's a lovely day today here.

Many things were accomplished, NOT the trivia answer yet, but perhaps in the morning.....yes. (a Cole Porter reference)

RED GARTERS on DVD!

Livingston and Evans - Rosemary Clooney, Jack Carson, Gene Barry,  and Guy Mitchell!  Very good news, DRMATTH!
