For Maltby & Shire "I Want It All". I enjoy the scores of both "Big" and "Baby".
"Autumn" is my favourite Maltby & Shire song.

Coleman & Leigh - great score for "Little Me" which is so much fun. Wildcat's "Hey Look Me Over" is great too.

I shouldn't believe any of the poppycock you are reading about Sunset Blvd.  It's akin to the whole Travolta/Banderas three year malarky on Phantom.  They forget to mention two important things that would enable this to be reality - a director and a screenwriter.

At least Hugh Jackman can sing and has played the role. I can only hope - wise casting for a change.

Hello DRs Elmore and Ben.

Taking a short break from "House Of Flying Daggers" Some exquisite scenes but I just don't get the culture. but then I don't get the idiocy of Batman either.

No wonder I'm lost with the Martix - or is that in the Matrix?

Good morning, all!  I was up too late watching a very funny film MAMBO ITALIANO because the lender wanted it back today.  Now I'm trying to get my mental facilities organized for the trip to the East Side and Tams-Witmark.  So far the coffee isn't working.

DRJMK, I haven't spoken to my friend Max Preeo since late 2001 or 2002, and we've lost touch, I'm sorry to say.  If you have a link to the site you  mention, I'd love to have it.

TOD:
Maltby & Shire:  I Hear Bells

                         Crossword Puzzle

                         Life Story

Happy Birthday DR CILLALIZ!!!!!!!!

DR Elmore, I also watched MAMBO ITALIANO this past week.  And while I found parts of it very funny, there were parts that didn't make that much sense to me (don't read further if you don't want a a minor spoiler).

The whole thing about Nico and Pino, made me not understand if he was bisexual, hiding from being gay, or what.  But the ending was very hilarious!

DR MBarnum: MANSION OF THE GHOST CAT is one of the popular scary stories in Japan for movie/play, same as YOTSUYA KAIDAN. It depicts woman’s deeply deep grudge and fatality, right?  We, Japanese, like to watch that kind movies in summer, according to custom.  I feel scary and pathetic whenever I watch them, as these are pitiful stories, but sometime I oddly feel like to watch. Woman’s grudge is horrible. ;D :P

Happiest of birthdays, DR Cillaliz!

TOD - Maltby & Shire, "One Step" - a very talented pianist once entrusted me to turn pages while he accompanied some friends of mine and DR elmore's in this number.  It was such fun when we all joined in to say, "You don't have to sing, you don't have to dance, but nothin'll happen 'til you take a chance!"  I also like "I Hear Bells" and "Watching the Big Parade Go By."

Hi Hisaka,

Yes, it is a very spooky movie. I had not seen it until recently, and very much enjoyed it. I have purchased some of director Nobuo Nakagawa's other films from that era (1950s/60s) including JIGOKU and GHOST OF KASANE SWAMP...I am hoping they are equally spooky!

Hisaka said:

I thought hurricane is always named a girl's one.

That used to be the policy but it changed in 1979.

Here is a link from FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Association) about hurrican names:

http://www.fema.gov/kids/hunames.htm

And here is a little more information from the Information Please Web site:

Because hurricanes often occur at the same time, officials assign short, distinctive names to the storms to avoid confusion among weather stations, coastal bases, and ships at sea. Since 1953, Atlantic tropical storms have been named from lists created by the National Hurricane Center and now maintained and updated by the World Meteorological Organization. The lists featured only women's names until 1979, when men's and women's names were alternated. Six lists are used in rotation. Thus, the 2004 list will be used again in 2010. A storm is given a name once its winds reach an intensity of 40 mph. In addition to the Atlantic list of names, there are ten other lists corresponding to other storm-prone regions of the world.

DR MattH:  I don't recall if you were the one who told me this, but somewhere, someone told me that the seasons of QAF that followed the initial (and most British) season weren't quite as good.  We are now halfway through season 2, and while I concur with the above assessment, they are still as captivating.  And for some reason (at least up until now) I seem to get teary-eyed every time Justin is on the screen.

And who knew Robert Gant was hiding that body when he was on "Popular"?

For Maltby and Shire, it has to be "Starting Here, Starting Now," though I think the score of BABY doesn't have a weak number and always enjoyed singing "And What If We Had Loved Like That?" with my Arlene when we did the show.

I also loved singing "He Loves Me Not" from CLOSER THAN EVER, a marvelous trio.

Honesly, DR Stuart, it wasn't I who said that. I actually prefer the QUEER AS FOLK episodes that don't ape the British original incarnation. They take the characters to very interesting places which I quite enjoyed.

I LOVED Chris Potter as Michael's doctor/lover in the first season and was so sad to see him go, but Robert Gant is a more than worthy substitute, and he grows into a very interesting and fascinating character in subsequent seasons. He is going through a terrible trauma this season, by the way.

ForColeman-Leigh, it has to be the title song of LITTLE ME. What a marvelous duet in the original show!

I've never seen LITTLE ME done on stage, so I'd love to experience it. I think I'd like the original version, however. There aren't too many actors versatile enough to do what Sid Caesar did, though, so I may not EVER see this one done on a stage.

(And for those who saw the Martin Short-Faith Prince version, what did you think? Also, did anyone see the short running James Coco-Victor Garber version?)

Happy Birthday, Cillaliz.  Where in Iowa are you?  DS Betsy got one of her many degrees from the U of I, and my late Uncle was Dean of the Teacher's College in Cedar Falls for many, many years.  I still have my favorite Aunt (probably not for much longer, sad to say) and lots of cousins in Iowa.

Elmore:  Max's listserv isn't a site, it's a "mailing list" you can subscribe to.  I don't have the instructions here, but I think Craig Brockman does, if he's still around.  The orchestration thread got started with regard to that ridiculous press release saying the new Sweet Charity had replaced the "dated" Ralph Burns orchestrations.

It's hard to choose Maltby and Shire songs.  As much as I like "Baby", it's hard to swallow since I had a not-so-memorable time in the pit for that show.  It left scars!  I like the songs from "Starting Here, Starting Now" and find a lot of "Closer Than Ever" rather tedious.  I do like "Life Story" even if it is too long.  And I might be the only person that actually enjoys "Big"!

Bringing everyone up to date on my E&Tness:

Well, I thought Sunday would be a great day to catch up on everything...but it wasn't to be.  Der Brucer got a phone call: "Grampa, can you come and help me with my Erector Set?"  It was Alex, the older lad.  A minute or so later, another call: "Grampa, can you come watch me swim?"  William, the younger lad, of course.

So, instead of my catching up on everything (including the laundry) we headed to the Eastern Shore and helped build and swim.  And we ate fresh corn on the cob, and potato salad and pasta salad and steaks that were rather tough but at least it was der B's daughter who paid for them so it saved on our wallets this time.  And we got home rather late.

Yesterday, I got to work fairly early, my shift ending at three-thirty.  After work, I was going through the store, picking up items I'd need for dinner, when der B suddenly appeared beside me.  "We've got doggy pictures to take!"  So we headed over to the pound, for pics of a highly affectionate white bulldog, and then to a home more to the south, for pics of an equally affectionate retriever.  Good news: der B posted the pics on the web after we got home, and this morning we got word that the dogs are already being rescued!  So that trip was worth it.

When we got home, there was a phone message waiting for me: could I come in to work today (Tuesday), as well?  (I'd been scheduled for a day off.)  Sure!  So I'll be back at work tonight, and then turn right around and sleep, and then work again tomorrow morning.  In the meantime, I had dinner to fix, and der B had work to do on the computer...so I didn't get online at all yesteday.

This leaves me with some of today to catch up...but since I don't get off work until 11 tonight, some of my time is going into making a decent lunch for us before I head out.

And that's why I've been E&T.

It's gonna be hot in Oakland today.  Hotter still in surrounding, inland, areas.

The weatherman (or was it just a deejay?) says we're getting our heat from Arizona!  That's thanks to some system that moves in dragging heat from western states (east of California, natcherly)  toward the west coast.

The fog -- that blessed natural air conditioning -- has been pushed well off coast.  It's supposed to make its return Thursday evening.

BK:  I have seen "The Canterville Ghost" several times as I have it on VHS.

The movie was definitely filmed as a "comedy", but it is very (VERY) loosely based on Wilde's story.  It was a showcase for Charles Laughton and uber-wunderkinder Margaret O'Brien.

I think a darker take on the tale might be fascinating.

Is this URL the same show you saw, or are two versions in the works?

I saw CANTERVILLE once on TCM some years ago, but it didn't leave a great impression on me (not like ON BORROWED TIME, for example).

I don't know from Maltby & Shire.  YOU FASCINATE ME SO is my favourite Cy Coleman.

I am more or less back from my jaunt to Lexington, Kentucky, where The Lovely Wife and I were teaching for two weeks at the Shakespeare Institute which is held in conjunction with their summer Shakespeare Festival.  We had a lovely bunch of bright students from 13 to 18 and had a generally great time.  Besides, the teaching gig, we visited and hobnobbed with loads of old friends and cronies from our college days and the local theatre community.  The Lovely Wife was, I must say, the darling of the students there at the institute.

In a recent post, I was trying to post a picture, and found that I don't know how to reduce the size of a picture on my mac.  I'm working on it at the moment.  However, the post - which I deleted - basically would have read WITHOUT a picture -

I was in Paris, and I turned the corner and there was Joe Allen - the official restaurant of HHW.  I was excited, I thought it would be cool to eat there.  DP Eric didn't feel my excitement as we walked right passed to look for Beef Bourgenion (which we didn't find).  I do have a picture which I'll post someday.

The orchestration thread got started with regard to that ridiculous press release saying the new Sweet Charity had replaced the "dated" Ralph Burns orchestrations.

That's the very same rationale used by Bruce Coughlin to justify what he does to Russell Bennett and Hershy Kay.

I stopped by there on the way in... Dated Ralph Burns orchestrations.  Whoever said that should be run out of town on a rail - how stupid can you get.  While there may be orchestrations that sound dated, Burns' Sweet Charity would not be one of them.  It's brilliant.

Rodzinski, what a great find - I was almost gonna go find the LP to transfer.  It's a bit scratchy, that download, but how easy that is to just stick the whole thing in iTunes and burn a CD.  Any other places for soundtracks that aren't on CD?

Winning yesterday's trivia was certainly a surprise as I have been very errant and truant from this site for quite some time.

My favorite Maltby and Shire song is "Starting Here, Starting Now."  On the eve of my wedding almost 34 years ago, I wrote the lyrics out and had my father-in-law-to-be deliver an envelope with the lyric sheet to my wife-to-be.  She and I were both were very familiar with the song and I felt the lyrics were very appropriate for a then young couple about to start our lives together.   My wife's matron-of-honor saw it and thought that I had written it myself - I only wish!  I don't remember whether my wife straightened her out or not.  Our daughter got married just last week on the 3rd, and I thought about asking the band play the song for sentiment's sake, but I didn't think too many people would recognize it.  I'm somewhat sorry now that I didn't.

As for Maltby & Shire songs...

DR Matthew - I, too, like big.  And as I've mentioned on here before, that show has a special place in my heart since the original Young Josh, Patrick Levis, was a student of mine.  But there are some great numbers in the show, with my favorites being "I Wanna Go Home", "Stop, Time" and "Now I Want To Know".  *And I was soooo glad to hear that Mssrs. Maltby & Shire have "reverted" back to the original - at least close to it - after the horrible - imho - tour version that had NO kids!?!?!?! (except for Young Josh and his friend).

Baby is also a sentimental favorite of mine.  I played for a wonderful community theatre production of it when I was 17.  And it was shortly after that production when I came out (of the closet) due in no small part to the wonderful men/role models/friends I had the pleasure of working with during that time.  "I Chose Right" still makes me cry.

Other M&S songs:
"I Think I May Want To Remember Today" - And, boy, do I love playing that one!  Of course, if the piano sucks.... UGH!
"I Don't Remember Christmas"
"It's Never That Easy"/"I've Been Here Before"
"Father of Fathers"

I think the version of big in Show Music was closer to the original Broadway version than the tour.

There was also that behind the scenes book, "Making it big", that was published.  A nice read.

The one song in big that I did not like - at least in the licensed version (at the time) that I did - is "Say Good Morning To Mom".  Yes, it would have been nice to give Mrs. Baskin a solo in Act One, but it's really not that great a song.  It was reinstated in the tour mainly to give the Mom more to do - and since they cut most of the kids for the tour they needed more "filler".  I actually talked with Barbara Walsh about the whole process of the song being cut during previews/tryout.  After being promised time and again by Mike Ockrent that the song would stay, she showed up one day, and when they listed the new cuts and edits, her act one song was one of the casualties.  Needless to say, she was heartbroken, but at least she got "Stop, Time".

-Oh, the other number from the tour version which I did not like at all was "My Secretary's In Love".  I much prefer the number that was in that spot originally, "Here We Go Again".

-Oh, and then there was the duet, "Big Boys", between Young Josh and his sidekick.  We ended up cutting it.

I guess I didn't like any of the songs that were reinstated (from the Detroit tryout) for the tour.

;)

Yes, I remember that book about the making of 'big.' I've always thought it would be interesting to read. Oftentimes the road to producing a flop is more interesting than a hit, especially since when it's obvious things aren't working, the personnel involved put their whole hearts and souls into it, and the aftermath is usually pretty devastating to read.

I am of the opinion that both of Maltby & Shire's revues (CLOSER THAN EVER, STARTING HERE...) should be combined, getting rid of all the dated material (the physical fitness number, for example), and be produced.  Ideally with Carolee Carmello singing Lynne Winterstellar's stuff and Emily Skinner doing Sally Mayes' songs.

I am a huge fan of this idea.  I LOVE Carolee Carmello. I am usually not a name dropper, but I did get to meet her husband, Gregg Edelmen, when he came into our office at Nickelodeon to audition for a pilot.  He was very gracious and asked for a piece of stationery that he could bring home to his kids as proof that he had been there.  I saw their entire family out together a few years later at a premiere and they were adorable- Love her!

Good Evening!

...Just put in the OCR for Side Show... Just because.

:)

Back from auditions.  A good day.  Not a great day.  Some more auditions tomorrow morning, and then callbacks in the afternon.

Auditions usually end up feeling like "old home week" to me, and today was no exception.  People I've known for years, former students, etc.  Always nice to see their faces again, and to catch up a little.

OH!

During one of the breaks, I was doing a mental inventory of stuff I would need for later this week... Well...  After just checking a few boxes here, it looks like I'll have to head back down to Richmond tomorrow night after the auditions.  While pulling things out of my storage unit yesterday, I had set aside one box to hold all the various things that I was pulling from other boxes.  Well, guess which box I left in the storage unit?  Ugh!  Ah, well...

I'm not that annoyed at myself for forgetting the box - I was thinking of heading back down to Richmond again on Friday anyway to finish up some banking stuff - more residual stuff from my bank card number being "stolen".  So, I'll head down tomorrow night after the auditions, take care of my stuff down there Thursday morning, and then head back up for the Damn Yankees auditions at 1:00 on Thursday...

Then spend Friday here in Fairfax organizing the rest of my "boxes-o-stuff", and then drive up to NYC Saturday morning!

:)

And that's the plan, man!

Are there any songs you are tired of hearing yet, DRJOSE?  Are there any NEW selections this year?  8)

...And since we're auditioning for Shenandoah, there was nothing really "NEW".  However, I did discover two things today:

1) Country songs that are guitar and/or fiddle-based, just don't cut it on the piano.

2)  Some of those sheet music versions of Patsy Cline songs are just plain wrong.

;)

Jose, what do you do when the sheet music is wrong, do you play it the right way or do you play as is for fear that the singer will get screwed up?

DR Jose  - I brought up this question before to no response - now seems appropriate.  Are you familar with the Geld/Udell song "I'm Afraid To Go home"? It was recorded by both Gene Pitney and Brian Hyland. To em it's always sounded as though it was written for "Shenandoah" - perhaps as an "audition" song.

I just read that Kevin Hagen, Doc Baker from Little House on the Prairie passed away.  I remember him from my favorite episode where Albert gets addicted to opium (or some other narcotic).

I don't remember that episode.  And what is Albert doing these days?  His brother was on the hit series JAG.

Jose, what do you do when the sheet music is wrong, do you play it the right way or do you play as is for fear that the singer will get screwed up?

Well, sometimes you don't know it's wrong until your/I'm playing that measure.  And sometimes "wrong" is more a case of the sheet music being "not fully correct" - if that makes sense.  Sometimes it's a matter of a chord voicing that was rearranged when it came time to publish the music.  And sometimes, the original version of the song provided by the composer for publication does not match the recorded version(s) of the song.

Otherwise, I keep playing.  Whether it's the music's mistake or mine.

And as I always advise (and caution) singers... The people behind the table are listening to the singer/you, not the pianist/me.  As long as you know what you're doing, then everything else should take care of itself.

...And then there are those moments - and I had a few of these today - where the singer brings his/her music to you and says, "I've never heard this with piano before."

Hmmm...  Ah, well..  Someday they'll learn either to actually practice their music BEFORE coming to the auditon... or just not to volunteer that information.

Actually, that song came up in conversation today during the auditions when they were discussing some of pop songs that Geld and Udell have written.  I have heard the Gene Pitney version before, but until you mentioned it, I had never really thought of it as an "audition" song for Shenandoah.  I shall have to investigate further.

Probably nothing more compelling than anything that causes anyone else here to bring stuff up.

I saw the movie Sunday evening, and then watched some of the extras in one of which Shirley Jones shared this bit of information.

It popped into my head today...and I simply HAD to say something about it.

Hisaka, during the women’s liberation movement in the early seventies women began protesting the sole use of women’s names for hurricane’s.  This in turn prompted the current system of alternating male and female names.

Leavenworth is a federal prison where my late Uncle was incarcerated for over 2 years on a trumped-up charge of being a Soviet spy in the early 60s.  (The charges were overturned and he was released, but by then the damage was done).  This may or may not be the subject of a major motion picture that may or may not be in the planning stages.  ;)

Thank you all for the wonderful Birthday Greetings!! I had a wonderful day, indeed. It started very early when my best friend, Paul, called me to meet him for breakfast before work. So I met him at Panera where he showed up with a beautiful rose and a funny card.

As I was ordering breakfast (Asiago Cheese bagel and cafe mocha) my phone rang and it was my parents singing me happy birthday! What fun. When I got to work a lovely bouquet of flowers arrived from my parents.  So my office smells delightful!

My laptop had crashed  for the second time in 2 weeks, and I was preparing to send it in to be repaired. Our office interpreter told me that her husband designed my laptop for Gateway and he wanted to look at it....so he found out what was wrong...there was a screw loose ! LOL. I've been told I had a screw loose, didn't know my computer could catch it! That was so wonderful. I still have to reload a lot, but it's working better than it did when I bought it.

After work I arrived home to find a sign on my door from my next door neighbor that said "Happy 44th Birthday" , a wonderful phone message from my other next door neighbor and another bouquet of flowers from my brother's family! Paul gave me a bouquet last Saturday, so I have flowers everywhere! I Love it!!!

Then it was off to Rebos, a really fun restaurant where I met several friends for drinks and dinner.

It's been such a wonderfully pleasant day. I couldn't ask for a better birthday!~

I am in Sioux City, as in Sioux City Sue, I grew up in Estherville.  I started college at Kansas, but transferred and received my 2 degrees from the University of Iowa.  (Sounds like the temperature in January!)

I did go to a Music Camp at UNI (formerly the Teacher's College) when I was in high school and my nephew went there for a year, but don't have a whole lot more of a connection there than that.

Chris Potter contract was not renewed for the 2nd season for his homophobic remarks he made about his same sex love scenes. It was decided the part would be rewritten out.

What a difference two hours can make department:  well, DRs, we may be moving.  The developers who bought the old farmhouse and land next to us are salivating over our house and land now.  They are coming to walk through our house tomorrow night and, probably, make an offer on the spot.  So Betsy and I have been driving around our neighborhood looking for a new house to move to.  We are blown away thinking that, with the sale of this house (and since we owe virtually nothing on it), buying a 700 or 800K house is "affordable."  Is that or is that not ridiculous?

Wow!  Every time I hear stories like that, I always think that my parents bought their house (granted, in 1976) for only $28,000!  And my mom talked them down from $32,000 because they were going through a divorce and needed to sell!  And now "affordable" houses are more than half a million dollars!  What is this world coming to??

So, in 1947, a house cost $9,000.  30 years later, $28,000.  That's three times the price.  From 1976 to 2005 is about another 30 years, but the price of a house has gone up 25 times!!  Okay, maybe not the same house, but still!

Watched EMPIRE again tonight which has veered so far away from Roman history as we know it as to practically be historical fiction. And when we got to the orgy scene tonight, well, of course, there were plenty of heterosexual activities and our Octavius was taking part in a three way with twin sisters, and there were fleeting glances of girl on girl action, too. Alas, no males with males, however.

I had read this, too, although this was not the first time he had played a gay role.

Be that as it may, he's a good actor because there was no trace of revulsion in his performance of the love scenes with Michael.

And amazing that Hal Sparks, no stranger to his own crass and uncalled for ignorant remarks, kept his contract.

Enjoyed SUSPICION this afternoon. I hadn't watched the entire movie in many years. Joan Fontaine's Oscar must have been payback for losing for REBECCA the year before. I don't see anything extraordinary about her work in SUSPICION (especially since Bette Davis was nominated that year for THE LITTLE FOXES and did do extraordinary work, but I guess the part itself was far more flamboyant.)
