Title: WHIP CRACK AWAY
Post by: bk on July 13, 2005, 12:03:49 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you've cracked the notes, you've whipped the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently whipping themselves into a crack-induced frenzy.

Favorite western score - so many greats, so I don't know if I can limit it to just one.  My favorites:

Once Upon a Time in the West
The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly
The Magnificent Seven
The Big Country
One Eyed Jacks

But there are so many more I love, like High Noon, Shane, The Searchers, Ride the High Country, The Wild Bunch and on and on.

Song: High Noon - I really do love it, especially as performed by Tex Ritter in the film.

TV song or theme - I'm rather fond of Duning's The Big Valley, and I love Bernard Herrmann's original theme for Have Gun, Will Travel.

Mac users: When I was in the Apple store the other day, I noticed a "dictionary" icon in the doc.  I went home and tried to find said dictionary under "Applications" so I could drag it into the doc, but could not find such a thing.  Does anyone know the deal with the dictionary?

Good morning, all!  I have a long day ahead of me with the recording project:  I'm back to our old stomping grounds, BK, Manhattan Beach Studio on West 37th to listen to a lot of takes from 2001.  Before that, more DARLING OF THE DAY work.

I do have a question for BK:  are there any cast albums Kritzerland might be interested in bringing out on CD?  Some of the unreleased albums I'd like to obtain are ALL IN LOVE, MAN WITH A LOAD OF MISCHIEF, Sony's SONG OF NORWAY and MERRY WIDOW with John Reardon, those EP Victor excerpts from the late 40s-early 50s with Felix Knight and Doretta Morrow, the London cast of CAMELOT with Laurence Harvey, etc.

Maybe add the stufio of Rose Marie with Julie Andrews that I always thought was a good recording and maybe one of the top 3 recordings.

I also like the theme from "Big Valley," although I have great difficulty hearing it without going into a  Miss Barbara Stanwyck impression.

"Rawhide" is terribly catchy-- whether you like it or not.  I loved "The Lemon Sisters"  when Carol Kane sang it while whipping around the microphone cord.  A classic.

It's hard to beat "Blazing Saddles" for a theme- it sounds more real than the genuine stuff.

Same can be said of the theme for The Wild Wild West, with it's harmonica and snare.  (That's for the TV series; I never bothered to find out what they did for the film.)

I've found the perfect way to get more hours in at work: ask for them!

It took a few weeks for the computers at the home office to kick in, what with all the temp workers for the summer (of which I am one).  Only problem was, the computer only scheduled me for three days work (eightteen hours, six hours per day).  So I let the managers know that I'd like to be kept on call for the other days.

Sure enough, I got a call Monday night asking if I could come in Tuesday, for the five to eleven shift.  (This was after der B picked me up after work to help him with dog pictures - more later).  Sure, I told them, I'd work.  I just rearranged my plans on feeding der Brucer from dinner to a large lunch.

And last night, during my shift, they asked me to come in Friday as well!  So that brings me back to my thirty hours.

*******

As for the dog pictures, we had two shoots on Monday.  One was at the SPCA, of a white bulldog we dubbed "Nathan."  Sure, he was big, but he was all puppy, happy and squirming and full of facewashings and wanting his belly rubbed.  The other was a retriever being fostered by a woman with two other dogs and a toddling daughter.  The retriever had been left behind by her family when they moved south.

When der B picked me up at work last night, he told me both dogs have already been adopted!  Those pictures work!

Thursday (my next day off, until later notice) we're transporting another dog northwards, to another rescue organization.  Busy busy busy.

Being E&T is not the same as wussburgering.

Today is also National Gruntled Worker Day!

You didn't know gruntle was a word?  It is!  It means to put in a good mood.  The word is a back-formation from disgruntle.  I'd rather be gruntled than disgruntled any day.

DR Ron Pulliam, I believe the irony in Miss Jones' MUSIC MAN pregnancy with Patrick (soon to be touring in JOSEPH...  Again.) is that I have often heard/read stories that during the stage version, Miss Cook was also with child, and Preston told her he would cut the lift during the footbridge scene if she was feeling nausous, or something like that.  So for uptight librarian/spinsters, those Marians got around.

TV Westerns had WONDERFUL theme songs. BRONCO had a very snappy title tune. Yep, THE BIG VALLEY and THE WILD WILD WEST had great instrumental themes. There are SO many to choose from, but I guess my favorite of all-time would have to be HAVE GUN WILL TRAVEL.

Does anyone have any sales figures on the best selling cast albums of all-time (LPs and CD numbers combined)? I know for years, MY FAIR LADY was the best selling cast album (not counting movie musical soundtracks where THE SOUND OF MUSIC led for years). But I have never seen any figures that combined sales from LP days plus CD releases.

Does anyone compile these figures?

The talk of Gregg Edelmann yesterday reminded me that also yesterday he appeared on the soap opera ONE LIFE TO LIVE. I was quite surprised when he came walking into the police station as an expert of crime investigation. I assume is was only a role that will occupy him for a few days, not a recurring or regular role for him.

He looked good.

Gregg Edelman on OLTL?  Wish I had known.....I used to be a fairly consistent OLTL fan....but really haven't seen a full episode, nor known who people are (except for the oldtimers) in years.  Still sorry I missed my beloved Phyllis Newman's turn as Renee, before the equally delicious Patricia Elliott took over.  They shared more than the role.....they are both Supp. Actress (Musical) TONY Award (R) winners!

Patricia only pops up occasionally now. She hasn't had a real storyline in a long, long time. In the show now, she's married to longtime star Phil Carey (Asa), but the focus is really on the younger cast members now rather than the more mature players.

About Patricia's Tony Award. I had seen A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC before its Tony win, had liked her but there was NO doubt in my mind that Hermione Gingold was going to take that Tony by a landslide. That was probably one of the biggest shocks of my life the night Elliott won that Tony.

Speaking of "Branded," I had a piano book of TV theme songs when I was a teenager, and I put together a medley of my favorites, and "Branded" was one of them. The others were "Dr. Kildare," "Twelve O'Clock High," and "Peyton Place."

Ah....Asa.  OLTL's answer to JR Ewing.

I remember the lovely Taina Elg as Olympia Buchanan.  It seemed that at one point they had half the original cast of NINE on OLTL.

I remember Al Freeman Jr. and Ellen Holly.  I remember Farley Granger.  I remember Jennifer Harmon, Doris Belack and the ORIGINAL Doran Cramer, Nancy Pinkerton.  I remember George Reinholt and Jackie Courtnay.

I remember Viki (I only remember Erika Slezak as Viki) being pregnant with Kevin for what seemed to be 17 months.

But I can't remember when I stopped watching regularly, or at least checking in.

And I seem to remember having this conversation with you.  Just had a deja vu, at least.

There are several things I'd love to bring to CD, reissue-wise, but, unless things have changed, the licensing deal is a very difficult proposition - it's based on a minimum number of units that you guarantee to buy (finished goods) no matter what - and that number has always been 5000.  Almost impossible to sell that many of anything.  Now that Sony has BMG, their licensing division has suddenly become difficult again.  And not all labels are willing to license.

Did anyone catch the 1910 version of WIZARD OF OZ that played on TCM recently? I just watched it last night...what fun! It starred a 9 year old Bebe Daniels as Dorothy...I had no idea she was a child actress at one time.

I particularly liked the costumes for Toto (he gets turned into a giant dog) and the cowardly lion....and the scarecrow was quite well acted.

My tape ran out and I missed the last few minutes, but I guess I know how the story turns out.

The day the terrorists attacks hit London, I was there, as you all know because I've posted about it.  But my mom got several calls and emails about my whereabouts that day as a lot of people knew I was planning on going.

It seems like for the last few months, I've been writing lyrics to "Five Foot Two, Eyes of Blue (Has Anybody Seen My Gal) ... and I recently recieved an email and the subject title was "Has anybody seen...." - it was from a friend of mine whom I wrote a song about her using that same song.  "Has anybody seen Ms. Howe" -  so I was inspired to do the following (my last name is Mattei (mat-tay) just so you know as I use it quite a lot.

Matt’s Journey to London

(sung by Matt’s Mom to the tune of “Has Anybody Seen My Gal”)

Have you seen the news today
Terrorists down London way
Has anybody seen Mat-tei?

Paris first, did he say?
Was it London or Bombay
Has anybody seen Mat-tei?

Would someone check his list
Paris, Nice, where is he today?
Yes indeed, it was the day
Mat-tei was down in London way

Is he safe?  Is he fine?
Did Mary Poppins really fly?
Has anybody seen Mat-tei?

(sung by Matt)

Yes I saw the news today
It was not so far away
Mat-tei was down Ol’ London way

Underground was shut down
Queue’s for taxi’s all around
Mat-tei was down in London town

The cops were all around
Streets were closed, Bus’s were down
In a pub, watched TV
Then fled to leave Ol’ London town

To our regret, heavy sigh
Mary Poppins did not fly
The day we were in London town!

That's Bobby Sherman alright, although for some reason Perry Como had the Top 40 hit of that song. If you like a good simple pop tune, Bobby Sherman's LPs are chock-full of 'em.

There are so many great Western movie scores:  Magnificent Seven, Big Country, The Bravados, Ride the High Country, Rozsa's Tribute To A Bad Man...

Western songs from movies: Gunfight at OK Corral; River of No Return (The Sons of the Pioneers have a great version of this); The Hanging Tree (by Marty Robbins), Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (never used in the movie); 3:10 To Yuma

TV Theme:  I always like The Rebel Johnny Yuma and the Theme to Jim Bowie.  Paladin is still pretty catchy.

Wild Wild West's film score is awful, and what makes it worse is it's by Elmer Bernstein (IIRC).  There is virtually no use of the classic tv theme.  For a while I thought it was a licensing issue, but about 3/4 of the way through the film, there's a brief quote of the theme.

Bobby Sherman's albums are great pop fluff.  Bobby did a personal appearance at the downtown Seattle Sears store my Dad managed (it no longer exists  :'() and my Dad brought me home a copy of a promo 45 of "Easy Come, Easy Go."  Years later it turned out that DS Betsy had IVd Bobby (who was then, IIRC, a paramedic) when he came to Chicago and did a guest spot on her radio show.  She loved, loved, loved him.

Scary stalker department:  I have a stalker.  No joke.  It's very scary and I think we're going to have to call the police.  Vibes, please.

Back from finishing the galley - I'm sure there's still a bad break or two, but I'm so done proofing this thing.  Every book these days has much worse, so I'm just moving on.  PDF of the galley has been sent to the publisher.

Tape hunt was a bust.  Deciding whether to go to storage after I eat lunch, or tomorrow morning.

And I'll be E&T for quite a LONG bit tomorrow. Tomorrow is my friend Jeff's day off, and we'll be unloading that pod we packed up eight months ago and taking its contents into his new condo. Not looking forward to the work in the hot sun (it was cool fall when we packed it up before), but at least it will be over and done with after a few more days. He has until Tuesday of next week to get it totally unloaded. Then, the company comes and picks it up.

Once upon a time, there was a plumber named "Whip" who apprenticed 8 years of his life under his father, and then he took over the family business.

Whip was a strapping young man, but as he grew older he began resembling his father and uncles more and more, putting on a gut.

As such things go, Whip worked exclusively in jeans and t-shirts and would sometimes show a bit of butt crack when he was hunched over some pipes.

The older he got, the bigger he got, until one day, a customer called Whip's son, who was also studying to take over the family business, and asked him if there wasn't something he could do to hide "Whip's crack away."

I meant to mention that Ford's was holding their auditions at the new Woolly Mammoth Theatre space.  It's an amazing space.  You enter on the street level, then take a set of stairs down to the theatre proper - as well as classrooms, rehearsal space and offices.  It has that hip and edgy concrete and steel look - which is very appropriate for the theatre company.

And the new space is also a perfect example of the private and public sector coming together in support of the Arts.  I forget the exact arrangement, but for now, Woolly is only paying $1.00(!!!!) a year(!!!!) for their rent.

...And now that their new building is done, there are just five other major theatre renovation and building projects left in DC...

However...

While sitting in on one of those piano festival/recitals/workshops featuring new music for students, I heard a great piano duet version of the theme from "The Wild, Wild West", as well as "Ghost Riders In The Sky".  And then there was a Two-Piano, Eight Hands (a double duet) arrangement of the Hoedown from Copland's "Rodeo".  Those were fun.

Maybe, but it's a lot more than we'd get if we just sold the house to a private party.  Believe me, the "suggested" price includes a hefty "premium" for his ability to subdivide and stick another house back here.  I got lots of advice from various realtors about what should be our "take the money and run" amount, and we got that and more.  (If the deal goes through, which it may not--his engineer may say they can't fit another house back there, but that would be fine, too--we love this house and don't "need" to move.  This has all kind of been a lark).

Just got an auction catalog and, oh, dear, I'm afraid I will be attending and, oh, dear, I'm afraid I shall be bidding to win on at least two count them two items.  I think both items (which are at the beginning of the auction, when people just tend to bid on anything - they get tired as it winds down) will get some action, but I shall have them unless there are nutcases who drive it too high.  Then again, maybe I will get lucky and not have too much competition.

So we just got back from the neighborhood meeting next door where the developer was telling the neighbors about his proposal for that property (we of course decided we should all play dumb, since the neighborhood is already up in arms about all of this).  The sticking point with our lot is they need 6,000 sq. ft. minimum outside of the "p-zone" (TCB go for it), the environmentally protected zone that our lot backs up to.  So Betsy and I just went out and measured and she used her advanced math skills to determine there is plenty of room.  So it will be interesting to see what happens.

The kind of scary thing we learned tonight is that all of these lots that abut the p-zone and stream are considered landslide hazards.

YIKES!

A friend of mine was about to buy a house in some "great" neighborhood in New Jersey - just about 20 minutes from NYC.  He found this great house - lots of bedrooms, two full baths, garage, nice backyard, etc. - perfect place for him, his wife and their two young children.  Well...

After doing some investigating, he found out that value of the homes in this one particular block was quite a bit lower than similar properties - even than some house right across the street.  Apparently, the stream that runs behind their property has a major tendency to flood, and since most of the houses there are not on blocks and/or have really old basements...  And with the natural landscaping, the water is bound to run into the property.

Not quite the great deal he thought it was originally.

During the run of AND THE WORLD GOES 'ROUND, lightning stuck the building and knocked out the circuit that the light board was on. The audience was asked if they wanted to cancel the show or do it with the house lights on. The applause decided that we'd do the show with the house lights on.

Before the first act was over, the circuit was repaired and they were able to run the show with light cues. But that was a strange 40 minutes or so doing to show and seeing the entire audience while we were doing it.

Well, Boys and Girls,

You'll have to hold down the fort for me for a few days (which is nothing new, I guess).  I'm off to Chicago for the annual fundraising concert for Hopeful Heart.

 See  www.hopefulheart.com  (http://www.hopefulheart.com) for more.

Last year our very own Jason wowed the audience, so he will be missed this year (although I'm working on the future....)

So I get to miss work (no pain there), miss a few days pay (definitely pain there) and work very hard for a few days, but it's worth it for the people Hopeful heart helps.

If I have access to a computer, I'll check in.  Otherwise, see you Tuesday.  You all be good and be careful while I'm gone!

Well I almost got to see a movie in the park tonight.

Last week we ended up leaving Miss Congeniality 2 cause the kids were bored and they started the movie while it was too light.  Tonight they waited till dark (9pm), but the kids were bored again (i went with my brother-in-law's sister and her kids and a bunch of others).

I will say this, the first 20 minutes of Guess Who (the Ashton Kutcher/Bernie Mac) movie seemed very funny.  But it was not for kids.

They need to have more kid friendly movies in the park (since tons of kids go).  And they need to have more bathrooms! 2 bathrooms for a thousand people just does not cut it.  And don't they know when kids say they have to go, they mean THAT MINUTE. I made the poor little 5 yr old go in the bush. :)

Good night.

DR CILLALIZ; What a turtle cheesecake at Rebos looks like?  Why TURTLE… ???
I don't know why turtle, but it's chocolate, carmel and pecans on a New York style cheesecake

"Turtles" are a candy made of caramel and pecans covered in chocolate that vaguely remind one of a turtle's shell.  Here is one picture:

And unless you have some made from real cheap (meaning low quality) ingredients, they're very, very, very (that's three verys) good! ;D

Well...

The original Turtles candy are made of pecans, caramel and chocolate.

You arrange a couple of pecans in a bunch, then pour caramel over them - enough to hold them all together - and then once the caramel is set, you either dip the whole thing in melted chocolate, or pour melted chocolate over it.  The resulting candy looks like a turtle - sort of.  Some candy makers even go as far arranging the pecans so that they have a head and legs.

... And then there are variations using cashews, peanuts, macadamia nuts, brazil nuts, etc.

:)

Well, if I'm to be functional at auditions tomorrow...  And I also have to negotiate a contract in the morning too - which is something I truly do not like having to do.  Ah, well...  In any case..

Goodnight.

*And, technically, since it's 1:00AM as I post this, I am not WUSSBURGERING... technically.

I started watching "Rookie" with Dennis Quaid, about a 30/40 something year old guy trying out for the baseball minor leagues and I think he's going to be "sent up" to the major leagues.  I was expecting "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" to be on at 10:00 p.m., but "Rookie" started at 8:00 and won't be over until 11:00.  So that's where I've been.

The actual title is "The Rookie (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0265662/)" and here's the synopsis from imdb.com:

When a shoulder injury ended his minor league pitching career twelve years ago, Jim Morris resorted to the next best thing: coaching. But Jim's team, knowing their coach is a great ball player, makes a deal with him: if they win the district championship, they want Jim to try out for a major-league organization. Going from worst to first, the team makes it to state, and Jim is forced to live up to his end of the deal. While there prove to be a lot of pitches to be thrown before he makes it off the mound, big-league dreams are revived, and there's no telling where he could go.

Speaking of CDs, I'm putting together some songs by The Manhattan Transfer for you, Tomovoz.  I said that I would do this last week, but the 2-CD set that I was just going to copy, "The Manhattan Transfer Anthology:  Down In Birdland," went missing. :'( I have no idea where it is, so I'm compiling songs from all of TMT's actual CDs.  That's why I haven't sent anything yet.  But I will!
