When I first moved to L.A. in 1976, i loved driving around and exploring, but what I remember more than anything else, was my first drive from Santa Monica to Malibu up PCH.
It was exhilarating, and nothing else ever came close. It’s still very vivid…the smell of the ocean, the beautiful hills, dolphins leaping up out of the water to play with the surfers….
So, Burt Bacharach’s song Pacific Coast Highway, is very special to me.

John G, I knew this would be the topic of discussion, but my timing was off by a few days. 😊

Monday, Monday 🎶
Wishing everyone a pleasant day. 🌻
-
Good morning, all!
-
I had a nice sleep with several dreams, most of which I now remember. I do remember bits of one which included my friend Robert Kimball. It was something to do about an election. At one point I had a band rehearsal with a small Dixieland-type band and 3-5 elderly African-American men, all former vaudevillians or comics to rehearse "Mnnie the Moocher."
-
I saw Baby once and that was enough. My friend Kim Criswell was in it, although her song was cut in previews. I did not yet know Liz Callaway. I liked the cast, hated the book, and kept wishing that for at least one scene that one of the ladies, all of whom were oozing with joy over pregnancy, would seriously consider abortion. I went because I loved Maltby and Shire's Starting Here, Starting Now. Much as I liked the score, I still hated the show.

Today begins my week of IRS hell. At some point this week I must make a trip outside the apartment to visit Staples and my pharmacy, but my primary concern this week is preparing my taxes for my new accountant.

Good morning, all.
-
A few weird dreams, none of which can be recalled which is probably just as well.
And a too-early wakeup. My norm these days.
-
Today I'll be working at the piano on NEWSIES because I'm joining an orchestra rehearsal tomorrow and I haven't actually played any of it yet, just been listening and following the scores. So that's my day.
-
In other news, we have YET ANOTHER "early spring" day here, sunny and hitting around 50 this afternoon
Incredible. Nothing dire in the forecast, either, and I hope it stays that way.
-
I have no idea who won the Series last night. Sometimes we'll tune in for a couple of minutes just to see what the rest of the world is doing, but even that didn't happen this time.
I also have no idea who the entertainment was to be. I really stayed insulated from it this year.
-
I guess I could go look just to satisfy that modicum of curiosity. And then it's on to a bagel and coffee and a day of practicing.
-
And since we all can use them:
Vibes of all kinds for the lot of us!

DR CHAS SMITH is carrying the Banner!
-
It has been my experience that BABY must have an age appropriate cast of performers that the audience can like - not a bunch of old friends of the director who can't sing or at least be charming and believably in love with the performer playing his/her partner.....not that partner's grandparent or grandmother.
This is the only version of the show I have seen.
-
And remember if you can't say anything nice after the show, just say:
"Well, that was something!"
-
DR IRIS you are correct.....about the UFOs. I think if Klaatu and Gort arrived in Washington today, he would only be there about ten minutes before fleeing and reducing our world to a burnt out cinder.
-
So many of my favorites have already been named....for the TOD.
But at the risk of being a repeaterer:
Walk On By
Do You Know The Way To San Jose
Promises, Promises
Turkey Lurkey Time
Alfie
The Blob
The Story of My Life
-
I think Guy Haines would enjoy being in the upcoming show. He could sing.....and play the harmonica.
-

DR CHAS SMITH is carrying the Banner!
Damn right, DR Jrand72! I'm carrying that thing over and over again, through many pages.
-
The piano basically doesn't stop playing throughout this show*, keeping the rhythm going. That's Keyboard 1. Keyboard 2 has all the synth bells and whistles, and I'm just as happy not to be concerned with any of that programmed stuff this time. My turn at that comes up again with Addams Family next month.
*and I can feel it right now, in my shoulders. Been hunched over and tensed up too much reading the music. Time to sit back and relax, and it'll be fine once I know it all.
-
I must say, this Alan Menken score is okay but it certainly isn't my favorite of his. There isn't nearly the beauty found in many of his Disney musicals. But I'm not nearly as familiar with it as with those others, so there's plenty of time for it to grow on me. At first glance, though...seems like an awful lot of sameness. Of course that could just be the nature of the piano part.

Jane, I adore dolphins , and have developed a sharp eye in terms of spotting them.
I pretty much always saw pods of dolphins traveling up and down the coast in Malibu and in Laguna Beach.

I have an acquaintance in South Padre who runs dolphin and bird tours. Most wonderful two hours imaginable. The dolphins know her boat and her dog, whom they love. So, they put on a show for her. Just wonderful.
-
The boat operator is named Scarlet. She told us Jimmy Carter, a birder, went on a tour to add to his life list. He couldn’t work up any enthusiasm gor the dolphins because he was looking for his birds.

Back from re-recording a song - I must say, Sami is really good at looping - we did it to picture and she did an amazing job, perfect matching.

Oh, I know what it is. I know exactly what it is and I'd kill for one right now. Ate a goodly number of those over a couple of years in Redondo Beach, and on La Cienega before that.
-
I would like fries with that, I think.
-
It will be a gustatory delight.
-
And, if eaten in the afternoon, also an afternoon delight.
-
So I played through the entire show, working out a few passages, and I'll go over a couple of the songs that could use a second look tomorrow morning... just the ones that had a whole lot of those black dots in them.

Jane, we frequently went to Oahu when I had free flight benefits.
Stayed at the Kahala Hotel, which has a lagoon with a family of dolphins.
We stayed in the rooms that face the lagoon, and dolphins greeted us every morning during our breakfast on the patio.
-
It was wonderful, but I didn’t feel 100% happy because they weren’t free.
We did swim with them, which was a wonderful experience, especially when my daughter was very young. She still talks about it to this day.
-
John, interesting about Jimmy Carter!
I’m an avid birder, and would have had no problem delighting in both species!
Lots of boating expeditions in Newport Beach and Dana Point focused on whales and dolphins.
-
I had never seen this. Related to the TOD.

Humpback whales are also super friendly.
They come right up to you on the boat and allow lots of touching and communication.
Awe inspiring.
-
I guess it’s pretty obvious that I miss my former home.
-
I don't know why that last song is in the medley.....strange.
-
Jane, have you explored the San Juan Islands?
I so regret not visiting that area when I lived on the West Coast.
Many beautiful Orca whales.
-
I got my plain brown envelope from DR George, too! :D
This will be most enjoyable. Thank you, sir!
-
New film of West Side Story in the works!
This version looks to be even more menacing than the last!
-
Jrand, great video!
Dionne and Glen sound good together.
Glen was my neighbor in Phoenix for many years.

He left out wheelbarrows full of lemons and grapefruits outside of his house for everyone to share.
That particular neighborhood had lemon, orange and grapefruit orchards.

Cool. We have gone whale watching, and seen them, but never up close.
-
While the experience with the Spinning Dolphins was incredible, it was also very difficult more me. While the boat spun in circles to keep a wake going for them to play in, I had tears of joy watching them AND a barf bag in my face.
-
I guess it’s pretty obvious that I miss my former home.
Was your home on the water?
-
In 1978 we had the opportunity to get out of LA and practically ran.
-
Jane, have you explored the San Juan Islands?
I so regret not visiting that area when I lived on the West Coast.

We have talked about going. I believe it requires taking a ferry and I tend to get rather sick on them.

Jane, I, too, would have felt queasy on a boat spinning around in circles!
Yes, we lived right on the harbor in Corona del Mar for many years.
Pelicans came flying over our heads on the balcony. I loved it there.
-
If I were ONLY queasy ;D Afterwards I was weak and sick for several hours.

What a wonderful place to live. We have seen pelicans in Marina del Rey, super cool.
-
I also lived in Marina del Rey for many years.
Loved it.
-
It was fun to walk from Marina del Rey to Santa Monica on the Venice Beach boardwalk.
Crazy scene, even in the late 70’s.
Mostly homeless tents on the beach in Venice now. 😢
-
That is quite the track record in California marina living, DR Iris!
My one claim is having the address 330 The Village, Redondo Beach for three years, 1982-85. I looked out on the Pacific from my living room window, and was steps away from the Redondo Pier, just south of King Harbor. I didn't know how good I had it. :)
-
Yes, a nice area to walk. I usually parked in Santa Monica and walked from there. We used to go to the pier and spend a lot of time at the pier.
-
I enjoyed living in the Los Angeles area (though not on the water!) from when I was 3 until I was 8.
-
We took camping vacations all over the southwest.
-
Speaking of bird watchers, don't they sometimes miss the obvious?
-
Joking.
-
Wishing you all a great evening.
-
Good night, friends.
-
'night
-
Chas!
I also lived at The Village in Redondo Beach!
It would have been from around 1979-1981.
Rode my bike down that bike path every morning before going to work.
-
I rented someone’s condominium, so it was the 600 series.
Went to the pier quite often. Do you remember Tony’s On The Pier?
-
I see it’s still there.
Now known as “Old Tony’s on the Pier”.
Good times.
-
I have lived in over 10 locations in Southern California, always near the beach.
Jane, I lived on Ocean Ave. in Santa Monica from 2009-2011.
Walked down to the pier every day. Also walked on the beach from Santa Monica to Malibu.
Lots of dolphins closer to Malibu.
-
The carousel where Paul Newman worked in The Sting was filmed on that pier.
Still there.
-
Feeling nostalgic.
Good night, HHW.
-
The carousel where Paul Newman worked in The Sting was filmed on that pier.
Still there.
And where Night Tide (1961) was filmed.
-
I loved riding my bike from PV to SM and everywhere in between.
In earlier days I'd even ride it out from BH, cruise the whole bike path. and then ride it back home. I'd love riding one, now, but that's unimaginable.
-
It was much less crowded on that bike path in the 70’s.
I do miss California, but I don’t miss the traffic and the careless drivers…much worse now with everyone driving and texting at the same time.
Almost was run over many times on Ocean Avenue from 2009-2011. Scary. And I was very careful with the lights and crosswalks.
-

Malevo – Tuesday, Feb 145th, 2023 @ 8:00PM
I didn’t know there were 145 days in short February.
;D
-
Quite a windy night. Hoping our power stays on.
-
Good night, all.
-
Quite a windy night. Hoping our power stays on.
It's been very windy here in Tumwater, too!
-
Did a quick Ralph's run and stocked up on Diet drinks. Also, bought some Gorton's fish filets - like a filet o' fish sandwich filet - some Bob's Big Boy tartar sauce and some buns and guess what I'm having for food tomorrow? Also, a couple of Marie Callender's frozen dinners, more Eggo waffles and syrup, some salt water taffy, and I think that's about it.
-
Everything at Ralph's is minimally three or four bucks less than Gelson's. At four for fifteen dollars, the sodas would have cost twenty-eight at Gelson's. A top sirloin of eight ounces would be fourteen at Gelson's whereas a one pound top sirloin is ten bucks at Ralph's.
-
Maybe I'll try to watch something now. The two-hour Zoom really took it out of me.
-
Pam made Jacques Pepin’s vinegar chicken. It was delicious.
You know ... if you ever need a date for one of these dimners at Pam's...
-
Now I’m hungry.
-
Three posts in three hours? No, just no.
-
Where's TCB?
-
Where the HELL is George?
-
Down some damn rabbit hole at the end of a posting day?
-
That is NOT how it works.
-
Most unseemly.
-
Well, page eight has made its entrance, no thanks to the errant and truant.
-
The disappearing act has got to disappear.
-
Now I’m hungry.
I went to Subway for lunch, and have half of my ham, egg and cheese sub left over.
-
We need our late-night action.
-
It was pretty good when it was fresh, but even the next day, it'll still be edible. :)
-
And what was dear George doing?
-
Other than not posting?
-
Certainly he was not posting.
-
Down some damn rabbit hole at the end of a posting day?
I did go down a rabbit hole.
-
It couldn't have taken three HOURS to eat leftover subway.
-
And what was dear George doing?
I downloaded a new game and it's kind of addicting. ::)
-
Maybe three hours to eat an actual subway.
-
We must stop with the rabbit holes and games during our late-night postings.
-
We just must.
-
No two ways about it or even three ways about it.
-
And don't get me started on four ways.
-
It couldn't have taken three HOURS to eat leftover subway.
No, I didn't eat the other half yet...that'll be for tomorrow.
-
We could have been on page fifty already, but noooo.
-
Earlier tonight, I had a leftover Olive Garden salad that I got from my sister.
-
I'm drinking a Canada Dry Zero Sugar ginger ale, gingerly.
-
I have Olive Garden eyetalian dressing in the refrigerator.
-
I have Bob's Big Boy bleu cheese dressing in the refrigerator.
-
We could have been on page fifty already, but noooo.
Well, some people (a Gypsy reference) type big long posts and do it all in only one post...not too often, fortunately.
-
I have Eggo waffles in the freezer.
-
I have salt water taffy in the cupboard.
-
I have Olive Garden eyetalian dressing in the refrigerator.
My sister had some, also, so I finished off the bottle that she gave me.
-
I have to find out where the Darling Daughter bought her nougat things with the little chewy fruity bits - I'm addicted to those. I don't even know how to search it.
-
I feel like page nine is nearby.
-
It's just a feeling.
-
I have Eggo waffles in the freezer.
I haven't had Eggo waffles in years.
-
It has me reeling.
-
And there you have it.
-
I like Eggo waffles, they're amusing.
-
I have peanut butter, extra crunchy, in the cupboard.
-
You can read about other food items in the new notes that will be posted as I type this.

New notes are up.
-
I've seen them.
-
I've read them.
-
I wrote them.
-
Them's BIG waffles.
-
BIG waffles.
-
The Big Waffle - that's the title of my next novel.
-
I have some maple syrup that has edible glitter in it!
-
I haven't tried it yet, but it looks pretty. ;D
-
Edible Glitter - that's the title of my next novel.
-
All right, locking this topic.
