Well, you've read the notes, the notes welcomed in May, and now it is time for you to post until the May cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: REBOANT!
-
Notes viewed. Grasped.
-
Just got word that the Big Apple Film Festival will be screening Sami - probably episode one - mid-May. Hoping some of you New Yahkers can go. We'll try to have Sami there and Karim, too.

Gordon Jenkins, what could he not do? And no matter what anybody says, he produced the first concept albums in the long-play medium. To your great list I would add Walter Schumann and Hershy Kay.
-
Hello.
Bruce, thank you for sharing the sad news of my mother’s passing.
I am not dealing with it well, but it’s only been 2 weeks.
-
And, many thanks to all of you for kind messages of condolence.
They are most appreciated.
-
Today’s T.O.D.
All of the ones previously mentioned, and I would add Marty Paich and Peter Matz.
-
I have lots to ketchup on, as I’ve been unable to concentrate on too much, due to this ongoing process of grieving.
However, I am delighted to read all of the wonderful reviews of SAMI, and plan to watch the entire series with no breaks. A grand way to lift my spirits, and a great way to learn how to laugh again.
-
Again, many thanks for your kind words of sympathy.
It helps.
-
Wishing everyone a good start to the week, and a wish for a happy and healthy month of May, lusty or otherwise.
Tra la! 🎶
-
It’s also the month of “yes, you may”.
Do with that what you will. 😉
-
Adding to the T.O.D.
Bill Brohn (Ragtime)
Michael Starobin
Doug Besterman
-
Thanks for stopping in, DR DR Iris.

Happy May!

It is really hard to believe that it's May already.

I don't know from Flicks.

TOD:
Mine are all from film -- Edward B. Powell, who orchestrated for Alfred Newman; Hugo Friedhofer, who did early-in-his-career orchestrations for Charlie Chaplin and Max Steiner; Conrad Salinger, who gave the MGM musicals their unique sound, Maurice de Packh, who orchestrated for Max Steiner on "King Kong" and many other films; Murray Cutter, who orchestrated for Steiner; Leon Raab; Ray Heindorf; Herbert Spencer and Arthur Morton, both of whom worked with many composers in the 60s through the 80s, but primarily for John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith. There was also Leo Shuken and Jack Hayes, who did splendid work for several composers, including Elmer Bernstein and Marvin Hamlisch.
-
I am up earlier than usual. Got a good night's sleep.
-
But in searching the Innerwebs about it, I discovered that you can purchase a box o' candy from the year you were born. Just type in "Retro Candy 19XX" in Amazon's search box. It ain't cheap, but it might be fun. And spark reminiscences. My mother's birthday is later this month, so I just ordered a box from her year of birth.
-
I don't know if Richard Carpenter called himself an orchestrator, but he was certainly a very talented arranger.
-
Good morning, all!

As soon as Zoom was over, I went to bed, vand I slept quite well. Stella spent most of the night lying beside me; Annabelle currently prefers to sleep on the kitty quilt at the foot of the bed, and Thatch sleeps in my computer chair. Around 4:30 Annabelle decided she was cold enough to crawl under the blankets to get warm. She was immediately followed by Thatch, who only stayed a moment. When the alarm rang, I had a kitty frenzy of three cats romping about noisily.

I am running out of score paper, so I must decide how to proceed in obtaining more. I'm hoping to finish up No. 15 today, depending on whether or not the paper holds out.

I think is time for coffee!
Not sure if I'll have a muffin with it or not. Not feeling peckish yet.

Sending hugs and vibes of comfort to DR Iris

Guess I’ll Wordle since I have no news since all I seem to do is chores and napping
-
Maurice de Pakh, Herbert Spencer, and Max Steiner all began as Broadway orchestrators. Max Steiner wrote with Russell Bennett some of the glorious orchestrations for Jerome Kern's beautiful Sitting Pretty, which he also conducted, Gershwin's Lady Be Good, and the Gershwin-Romberg Rosalie. I think he may have worked on Kern's Sweet Adeline as well.
-
Monday morning greetings! For the next week I’ll be busy with my 3 women’s organizations wrapping up their program years. Today: catered luncheon for 30.

Broadway (1900-1940):
Otto Langey and Harold Sanford, who orchestrated a lot of Victor Herbert's shows.
Robert Russell Bennett aka Russell Bennett, who remained Chappell's prize orchestrator through the 1960s
Emil Gerstenberger, who taught Richard Rodgers to conduct on Dearest Enemy, did the big Romberg shows of the 1920s: The Student Prince, The Desert Song, and The New Moon
Hans Spialek
Frank Saddler, who was Kern's orchestrator of choice until his death around 1921, who wrote for bif Broadway shows as well as smaller, quirky orchestrations for the Kern Princess Theatre shows
-
BK, thank you for letting me play the wallflower on last night’s Zoom. I was hesitant even to attend because I had not yet watched the series. Well, I have now and I loved it!
-
Broadway (1940-1970)
Robert Russell Bennett: my friend Russell Warner said that Bennett's orchestrations were like a velvet-lined jewel box in which the tune sat like a diamond ring
Phil Lang: Annie Get Your Gun, High Button Shoes, Goldilocks, My Fair Lady, Camelot
Don Walker: Louisiana Purchase, Carousel, Finian's Rainbow, Call Me Madam, The Most Happy Fella, Cabaret, She Loves Me, Annie
Hershy Kay: On the Town, Candide, On the Twentieth Century
Ted Royal: Brigadoon, Paint Your Wagon, New Faces of '52
Sid Ramin: West Side Story, A Funny Thing Happened . . ., Gypsy, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue
Irwin Kostal: West Side Story, Tenderloin, A Funny Thing Happened . . ., Rex
"Red" Ginzler: Gypsy, How To Succeed in Business, Bye Bye Birdie, Wildcat
Jerome Moross, who went to Hollywood to orchestrate his friend Aaron Copland's score for The Heiress and made better money working in Hollywood first as orchestrator (Hans Christian Andersen) and later as a composer
Larry Wilcox: Walking Happy, Sherry, a wonderful writer whose demons destroyed him
Ralph Burns: Little Me, Funny Girl, No No Nanette (1970), Chicago
-
Broadway (1970- )
Jonathan Tunick, the best
Michael Gibson: in 1999 Michael Gibson asked me to co-orchestrate a show and I had to turn him down: I was having serious health issues caused by undiagnosed crushed discs in my neck and I could not hold a pencil; until his death, Michael replaced Don Walker as John Kander's go-to orchestrator
Michael Starobin: Rags, Assassins, his beautiful work on Sunday in the Park with George is best heard on the DVD of the Broadway production, not the CD
Bill Brohn: In 1985. I called him to tell him how wonderful his orchestrations were for the misguided The Wind in the Willows, but I run hot and cold on his work, which could be wonderful (Miss Saigon) or downright lousy (Mary Poppins)
HaroldWheeler: Rags, Sideshow
Luther Henderson: Ain't Misbehavin', Purlie
-
Good morning, all.
-
Hugs, Iris.
-
Great lists of orchestrators so far. I will single out some favorites:
Hershy Kay for On the 20th Century
Don Walker for Finian’s Rainbow
Maurice Peress and Hershy Kay, Candide
Harold Wheeler, Dreamgirls
Quincy Jones for The Wiz movie

Now is the month of maying,
When merry lads are playing, Fa La
Each with his bonny lass
Upon the greeny grass. Fa La
The Spring clad all in gladness,
And to the bagpipe's sound
The nymphs tread out their ground, Fa la
Fie then why sit we musing
Youth's sweet delight refusing? Fa La
Say dainty nymphs and speak,
Shall we play barley break? Fa La

Last night was great, wonderful seeing everyone.
A couple of people mentioned this, and I agree: I have really missed the online Kritzerland shows and chats. Obviously those were created for a reason that doesn't apply now, but in their absence it's apparent they were a rich part of our online life. It's great to have that back, at present, with SAMI and last night's Zoom.
-
I have a rehearsal tonight -- not for a regular show, but a concert chorale thingy two weeks from now that's to be accompanied by a ten-piece band. My part in that is mostly some strings padding, but there's one tricky number requiring some synth effects that I must work on today.
-
Tomorrow and Wednesday are my two mornings of HELL, getting up and leaving at dawn's crack for morning school performances of that newspaper show.
-
We don't need no stinkin' dawn's crack.

For those interested, here is a viewable/downloadable .pdf of the Coronation ceremony next weekend:

It includes the listings of the music and commissioned works.
-
It will start at 5:00AM Saturday, Central time.
-
West-Coasters will have to get up awfully early to participate. Of course, there's always DVRs.
That is, if you have any interest at all. Many don't.
-
I enjoy the pomp and pageantry.

Even though I don't think the son will be able to measure up to his dear departed mum.

DR Iris--I'm sorry to hear about your mother. Please accept my condolences.
-
Vibes for DR IRIS.
-
Watched Sami and enjoyed it very much!
-
Miracle vibes for MR BK.
-
DR GINNY is certainly busy - but it was wonderful to see her for a moment last night.
The ZOOM talk back was a lot of fun. And I especially loved seeing all of the dear readers IN PERSON!
-
The auditions were most interesting. We were divided into groups and given a scene to work on for a bit. Then all three groups came back into the room and did the scene.
There were some good people there.....and some others. And each group contained some others - so it was a bit of a slog. Of all of those there, I would like to work with about half of them....some of them not at all. Then again, some of those there might say the same thing about me.
-
I'm going to take some GREASE rehearsal pictures tonight, so I may stop by the second round of auditions in case they want to see me again - and vice versa.
-
I am enjoying all of the TOD discussions today and I am learning many things.
Of course I enjoy DR ELMORE's work on all of MR BK's CDs.
I think the first time I noticed "orchestrations" or "Arranged by" was Camarata on the Annette albums.....and Leo Shuken & Jack Hayes on some things....and Nelson Riddle...
-
I am interested in the Coronation! We shall see what happens.
-
I think all of the E/T reviews for SAMI are now up!

-
I did that for my year, 1966, and two different boxes came up.
-
However, one box included Pop Rocks!
-
That didn't seem right...I remember first hearing about them in the 1980s. ???
-
I looked it up and found this:
Back in 1956, food chemist, William A Mitchell invented Pop Rocks for General Foods, while trying to make an instant soft drink. But this little piggy did not go to market until 1975.
-
So why are they included in a box for 1966?? :o
-
Weird, huh?

I'm up, I'm up - only about five hours of sleep, despite getting to bed at one-thirty.

Yes, we now have twenty-five reviews.

I'm up, I'm up - only about five hours of sleep, despite getting to bed at one-thirty.
I hate it when that happens.

From DR Rodzinski:
I literally fell asleep for 10-15 min of the movie. I have no idea how Donkey Kong showed up in the plot.
;D
-
I never liked Snow-Caps. Peanut M&Ms sound much better.

I never liked Flicks.

I never had an It’s-It.

Hello.

I am sorry Iris, it is really hard losing a parent and then there is so much to deal with.

That was interesting. I don't remember one of the items, Round Up, which look like it might be candy cigarettes.
-
I just checked and they are candy cigarettes.
-
Keith's box, one year later, is similar to mine. One slight difference is that it has Victory cigarettes.
-
Wow, my children are so old they even have retro boxes, and they too include candy cigarettes.
-
West-Coasters will have to get up awfully early to participate. Of course, there's always DVRs.

I just did that and here's the candy from the dark ages:
-
I cannot believe it was thirty years ago that BK called me about orchestrating a recording. Ever since I mentioned that on Zoom last night I've been thinking 30 years?
-
Even though I don't think the son will be able to measure up to his dear departed mum.
Not even remotely. And that harridan of a queen consort! Blech!
-
DR Iris: I, too, wish you well in dealing with your mother's passing.
My mom died in August 2018. I dealt with it...but my private moments were horrendous. I had some crying jags. I guess I was feeling sorry for myself, because I expected to have more time with her. I also cried because I didn't really grasp how ill she was until her last week.
Even today, if I think on it as I am doing now, it is difficult.
I am completely orphaned.
I am nobody's "son" anymore.
-
Good call on Camarata, JRand!
-
Even though I don't think the son will be able to measure up to his dear departed mum.
Not even remotely. And that harridan of a queen consort! Blech!

Back from banking - no waits either bank, then a quick trip to Gelson's for Diet Coke, tuna, onion rolls, and a few other necessities.

Thanks DR RODZINSKI.

I have edited my review for SAMI to take out the knock - that was unwarranted. I also added a few more sentences.
It might take a couple of days we shall see.

The complete "Lusty Month of May" number, including all the dance music.

Jrand, thanks. First episodes are always a tough line to walk - we're meeting the characters for the very first time, but I tried to make it as funny as possible, too, so we had balance.
-
John Wilson is turning out to be a wonderful conductor and advocate of film and theater music for his orchestra. I have quite a few of his recordings. And great sound on this video.

John's a friend I met through Kim Criswell. He's asked me for casting thoughts when he needs an American singer and I happen to know them. I recommended Ben Davis to him for his Kiss Me Kate at the Proms, and Kyle Guglielmo and Nate Hackmann for his Oklahoma! He chose Nate.

There's a moment in the Oklahoma! overture, in the transition from "Out of My Dreams" to "People Will Say We're in Love" that John settles into the new tempo and smiles with pleasure that I just adore. Also, his Laurie is Scarlett Strallen, who had the lead in the Encores! The New Yorkers.
-
You are most welcome MR BK. It should show up in a few days.
I also made sure to add that Sami is not SAMI - in so many words after the discussion at the ZOOM meeting last night.
-
DR ELMORE what wonderful videos!
-
Page Five.
I shall be on my way in a bit to take some photos of the rehearsals for Ben-Hur.....I mean GREASE.
Then I shall also drop by the second session of auditions for THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG in case they need another body for one of the groups. Or to see if I hear anything interesting.

My favorite line in Brendan Behan's The Hostage: I'm Ben, he's Hur.

Funny, guys!
-
I didn't say this in the Zoom, but when Sami expressed concern that if we called it Sami people would think it was her, I said, "No, the character of Sami is NICE." Then she was fine :)
-
Getting concerned that the nice thing the might happen today based on the PM of yesterday hasn't happened. Yet.

And speaking of reviews, I just noticed that ChazSmith's [sic] review on IMDb (https://m.imdb.com/review/rw9018397/?ref_=m_tt_urv) doesn't have a star rating, only the (very positive) review, itself.

Thank goodness!

It was unusually busy at the market today. At one point I couldn't move around anyone for about 4 minutes.
-
Once home I delivered groceries to the upstairs neighbor, then took the dog for a walk.
-
After he peed a couple of times he just stood around watching for dogs and people to come by.
-
We were both bored so I brought him inside to play with Keith for awhile.
-
As soon as I said "Let's go find Keith" he looked happy and headed into the building :)
-
My neighbor Ann stopped by, and I forced her to watch Episode one of SAMI. She liked it.
-
Tonight we started the latest season of Brokenwood, but we're going to have to finish the episode tomorrow night. We're both falling asleep.
-
I don't think I can even make it to page seven.

Which is not pleasing to BK.

I think.

Yes, if on the imdb please do leave a star rating. Very important.
I did. Just went in to edit if necessary, but the ten stars are there in a nice bright blue. As I remembered doing, anyway. I'd also ten-starred the series and each individual episode. But I just made an inconsequential change and submitted my "edit" to see if it'll make the rating appear.
-
Rehearsal wasn't nearly as grueling as I'd thought, and didn't run as late. All to the good. Now to try getting to sleep soon so I can RISE AND SHINE at five-thirty in the morn'.

Gordon Lightfoot has slipped away on Carefree Highway. One of the all-time greats.
-
A rumor of his death went around in I think 2012. I cried then. I think it prepared me for today. As all the time since that day felt like a bonus.
-
Loved his music.
-
Gordon Lightfoot has slipped away on Carefree Highway. One of the all-time greats.
Oh, no.
-
Ugh. I loved Gordon Lightfoot.
I grew concerned when he cancelled his tour due to health problems.
-
If You Could Read My Mind is one of my favorite songs.
-
DR Ron, you express exactly how I feel.
-
Thank you all for your vibes of comfort.
Very much needed and appreciated.
-
I went over to my mom’s house today for the first time since she passed away.
It was very difficult.
-
She has so much stuff!
Many cabinets and drawers filled with paperwork.
Two huge closets crammed with clothing, shoes, handbags, etc.
-
I am determined to start getting rid of my own things, as I do not want my daughter to face a similar situation one day.
-
John Wilson is turning out to be a wonderful conductor and advocate of film and theater music for his orchestra. I have quite a few of his recordings. And great sound on this video.
I fully concur. His reconstructions/performances of film music is superb.
-

I know what you mean. My mom had so much clothing and shoes. Fortunately, a local church was having a bazaar and requested donations and my aunt and a friend came over and cleaned out the closets for me and took everything to the bazaar center.
I still have her jewelry. And she never threw out anything...including every tax return she ever filed from 1947 through 2018! I have not yet brought myself to the point of shredding those.
-
DR Ron, you express exactly how I feel.
I was living in her house and probate was fairly easy as she had placed the house in my name several years earlier.
Every step is going to be emotional, Iris, and you should take your time. It does get easier, but the feeling of loss changes slightly to deep regret.
-
Gordon Lightfoot has slipped away on Carefree Highway. One of the all-time greats.
Oh, no. I met him once...in Jacksonville, FL in the early 1970s.

And I only have three, count 'em, THREE spoken lines in the second act.

We have to be off book by Friday.

We actually have a rehearsal on Friday night, which is a holiday!
