Title: BRAKE PADS
Post by: bk on July 26, 2005, 12:08:42 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes have made you ponder your brake pads, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently replacing their brake pads, which are unusually large - they have maxi pads, you know.

I just put my shirts in the laundry.  I got distracted in my bedroom, finding things hidden under my shirts (in a pile on the floor ::)...fortunately, nothing that was ever alive, just things).  I dumped the pile on the kitchen floor (where the washer and dryer are) and went to the bathroom (just had to share ;)).  When I came back shortly thereafter, the cat was all snuggled up in my pile of dirty shirts!  Too bad.  I just couldn't let her (the cat) stay there, so I carefully pulled one shirt at a time out of the pile and put it in the washer.  By the time I got about half of the shirts out of the pile, she got the hint and moved.  She's now eating and the washing machine has started.  I guess I'll be up until it's done so that I can put all the shirts into the dryer so that I'll have dry (and clean) shirts to wear for the next several days. :)

Tomovoz, I sent off your package today!  Let me know if anything arrives broken.  I sent it in a "Star Trek:  The Next Generation" box that was discarded from the library where I work.  They repackage all of the boxed DVD sets, so things like this either get thrown away or saved by staff member who collect junk (like me). ;)

All this talk of the remake of the Poseidon Adventure makes me think of the Mad Magazine take off which they called (and which I always think of when PA is mentioned) The Poopside Down Adventure.

It is supposed to be a record hot day in Manhattan (and all over New York City) so it would be easy to be SEDENTARY. I will be in office air conditioning and since it's already in the low 80s at 7:30 I told Anthony he could keep the AC on in the bedroom during the day. We only have one room with temperature-controlled air and to prevent a shocking electric bill we try to keep it off during the day. Today is an exception. It is supposed to be just as bad tomorrow but if the weatherpeople are to be believed, it will be better on Wednesday and through the end of the week. Here's hoping!

I know I have somewhere in my CD collection a Poseidon Adventure musical cast recording.  I think it was called something like The UpSideDown Adventure.

Many Years ago I was at the Billy Rose collection at the NYC Public Library at Lincoln Center. I went into another room and there on the floor by the door was an Academy Award. I Picked it up and held it for a few seconds. It was Burl Ives oscar for The Big Country. I wish I had a camera. My friend was meeting me in NYC the next day and I told him to bring a camera so we could take a picture. Of course when we went back the next day it was gone. I wondered why it was there in the first place.

Well, I'm not dead yet, but I wish I were. Actually, I feel a teensy-weensy bit better today, though I'm now a low bass as opposed to my regular baritenor. That's good, though...means it's settling in my chest now and will soon be out of my nose. I'm calling in at work again today, which I really never, ever do.

Jose: I'm glad Joe got to go last night. I hope you guys had fun without me... *sob*

And now I'm off to blow my nose...again.

Congrats to Macchus999, whoever you are...

This week's trivia was not only fun, but educational as well.  I did not know that Lt. Columbo's origins went that far back.  I also learned that Thomas Mitchell died of cancer just seven months after the play closed.  And that the creators of Columbo had originally offered the TV role to Bing Crosby.

I will be off to the wilds of Burbank, California in a mere three days. Saturday I will sit with Ms. Laurie Mitchell at her table and watch as she interacts with her fans and signs autographs...perhaps we will converse with Mr. and Mrs. Shirley Jones, our table-neighbors..perhaps not. I wonder who will be sitting on the other side of us? It will be lots of fun...I will get many autographs of various B-movie celebs and tv stars and will purchase many 8X10 photos for my collection and for use in my upcoming magazine interviews.

I am still trying to find a fun movie or play to go to on Sunday evening, but haven't found a thing.

I do hope that Mr. Bruce Kimmel will stop by and say howdy while he cruises the Ray Courts Show either Saturday or Sunday. If he brings a copy of the new Guy Haine's CD I might like to buy it!

Monday I shall hie myself to the center of Los Angeles...Holt Ave to be exact, where I shall take Carolyn (The Thing that Couldn't Die) Kearney and her husband out to breakfast...then I will maybe do some sightseeing and then make tracks back to the airport and return to Salem, Oregon!

And that is my itinerary!

Some of the people I am most excited to see at the Ray Courts show include...

Ms. Virginia Davis who played Alice in Wonderland in the 1920s Disney short subjects.

Former child actress Marcia Mae Jones.

HEAD OF THE CLASS star Tony O'Dell.

One time James Bond, George Lazenby

1940s actress Jean Porter

and 50s starlet Yvette Vickers

If you've mentioned it, I have either forgotten or didn't see the post because this was a most pleasant surprise to me. But, if it's missing its base (where the recipient's name is supposedly engraved), how can you be sure it's hers? Is her name on the back, too, or is there a reference number that autheticates it?

Like DR JRand, I'd love to see a picture of it too.

As for the base, I know Barbara Cook's Tony (which was awarded before they started installing them on bases) has been mounted on a base for her, so I'm sure it could be remounted. If you know the name of the award company that manufactures the awards (it might be listed in a Tony program I have), I'm sure you could pay to have it put back on a base.

Ms. Smith's name, along with the award category and the name of the show, is beautifully engraved on the back of the medallion.  A friend who has worked as a professional engraver has looked at it and said that it is the work of a master engraver.  The medallion has been verified as being silver.  Plus,  the idea that anyone would go to such lenghts to counterfit such an item seems far fetched.  So I'm pretty confident that it is the real thing.

Early on, I made a phone call to the American Theatre Wing office seeking a way to get some definate authentication.  I left my name and number, but they never returned my call.  I decided not to pursue it with them because I became afraid that they might choose to get possessive over it.

I'll take a pic of it tonight when I get home.

DR MBarnum, please extend my best wishes to Ms. Marcia Mae Jones. She was a very talented child actress who had the unfortunate luck to be born into an era overrun with child stars. In another era, she might have become a big star herself.

To me, she showed her total versatility as a good girl in HEIDI and a bitch in THE LITTLE PRINCESS.

Did she stay in the business or retire early and do something else with her life?

Some lovely Annie casts.

Just looked over the Ray Courts list - an interesting group, but not one of the stronger shows.  Someone nobody's mentioned is the person I'd like to see the most - Shirley Eaton, the divoon Goldfinger girl (and star of many Brit films).  Also, there are several interesting folks who will only be there on Sunday, like pretty Lynn Holly Johnson.

Just made those calls to our guests who had played Unseemly Trivia on Sunday to tell them the Unseemly answers.  Someone had guessed Columbo, but when we googled got a character bio on tvacres.com that said Thomas Mitchell had played the character on Broadway.  Unfortunately, we didn't check further on the ibdb.  But it was just one of dozens of guesses, so we were ruling legendary characters out at the slightest provocation.  The silliest one was the idea someone raised that maybe Carol Burnett had made Norma Desmond even more legendary than she was in the movie. :)

BTW, the way DR Robert Armin's name came up on google was when I had made my first stab in the dark and entered the combination of "inspector clouseau" and tryout as my google search.   There was DR Robert Armin's name in the very first little squib, only curiously without the DR in front of it.

Regarding ANNIE casts, I had done a research paper in college for a class on The Great Depression, and the professor inexplicably (and happily) allowed me to do my paper on the musical ANNIE.  (I also managed to convince my professor in a graduate-level Urban Economics class to let me do my term paper on Urban Economic Themes in SWEENEY TODD, EVITA and ANNIE, so I got to recycle my ANNIE research, but that's the kind of education I got!)

In my ANNIE research, I had run across a picture of an absolutely legit mock-up poster showing that at one point, in a presumably more campy version, Bernadette Peters was actually being talked about to play Little Orphan Annie in the musical version.

I've never been to Splash on Musical Mondays or any other night of the week. I've been to Posh - that's not so bad. Jose and I would be happy to keep the hounds at bay for DR Rodzinski.

DEAL!!!

Well, why don't we plan on going next Monday then.  Come one, Come all!

:)

There is a $5.00 cover charge - which isn't too bad compared to what they charge later in the week - sometimes as high as $20.00!  UGH!

Be forewarned, however, that the drinks are served in very small glasses and are very expensive.  We ordered four standard rail drinks last night.  $30.00!  I guess you're paying for the bartenders' gym memberships.  ;)

Ooops...

Well... I thought I had posted an answer to your question yesterday...  Well...

Here it is now... -And I swear I posted this yesterday... ???

Right now, I'm supposed to start Damn Yankees rehearsals on November 8.  But, things, as they say often in this business, are subject to change.

So...  And, actually, after some conversations and chance meetings I've had the past few days... Anything is possible.

As for bad Annie casting...

I would LOVE to see and hear a sort of updated version of it with the Broadway cast of The Life.  Lillias White as Annie, Chuck Cooper as Daddy Warbucks, that woman with "the HAIR" as Pepper...

Hmmm... Maybe I need to call Seth Rudetsky.  ;)

...And one final comment about Splash Bar New York...

Splash was one of the first "bars" in New York that I ever went too some 15-17 years ago.  *I was grandfathered in under the Legal Age Drinking laws - I could order beer being under 21, but no hard liquor.

Back then, it was a place where men went to watch men.  In showers that were behind the bar area.  Yes, men in showers in a bar.

They remodeled the place a couple of years ago.  A multi-millon dollar renovation and expansion.  It was amazing walking in there last night and not recognizing it at all.  And the showers were gone.  There is still entertainment there, but it's not as "blatant" as it used to be.  For better or worse.

However, the thing that I liked the most about my return visit there last night was that it was now a No Smoking zone - like the rest of NYC.  Ah... So nice to come home from a bar NOT smelling like a pack of Marlboro's.

*The "upshot" of the smoking ban, however, has made it easier to find where the bars are in town.  Just look for wherever a group of people are outside on the sidewalk... smoking.

;)

OH!  And in true musical-theatre queen fashion... As soon as the musical theatre clips stopped, the crowd began to clear out pretty fast.  -Even though the "entertainment" had begun to start on the "pedestals".  -Although, it was a work/school night, so that could have had something to do with it too.

;)

Question for BK or other DRs familiar with the Angeles of Los area...what is the best road to take to get from Burbank to Los Angeles...I will be driving around 9 am...according to my map it looks like Laurel Canyon might be the way to go....but then I don't know what kind of traffic that would put me into...Carolyn's husband told me I may want to avoid the freeway.

Oh... And I guess you could also do a Dreamgirls take on Annie

Annie - Jennifer Holliday
Daddy Warbucks - Obba Babatunde
Grace - Sheryl Lee Ralph
Rooster - Cleavant Derricks
Lily - Deborah Burrell

etc., etc.,  etc...

And it always amazes me the people who were in that original cast in ensemble roles:  Paul Binotto (a frequent Plaid), Phylicia Ayers-Allen (TV's Mrs. Cosby), David Thome (A Chorus Line alum), Brenda Braxton (she was a swing), Cheryl Alexander, Brenda Pressley, Charles Randolph-Wright (who is now a writer and director), etc., etc., etc...

Going from Burbank Hilton on Hollywood Way to Holt Ave in Los Angeles.

But once in Los Angeles I have my way mapped out, just suggestions on the best/easiest road to get from the valley to LA so as to avoid traffic jams or other unseemly driving distractions.

It looked like I could take Laurel Canyon to Sunset and then I would be on my way.

Question for BK:  When I upload a CD to myPod, iTunes does an automatic grab for track information from a website called Gracenote CDDB.  How does this info initially get out there?  Did you or someone with Kritzerland contact Gracenote and supply the track info for the new releases?  Did an anonymous someone out there inadvertantly upload the info because he or she was the first one to play the CD through iTunes?  Just curious.

I'm dismayed that Colleen Gray will not be there.  I am hoping Caroline Munro will be there.

I've held Maggie Ray's special Oscar and I've touched Chuck Heston's.  I've also seen his "rod of god", the Moses staff, from The Ten Commandments.

The Mark Taper has all their Tonys and Awards displayed under glass in their miniscule foyer.

Ginny, Cincinnati Playhouse-in-the-Park is one of my favourite regional theatres.  Spent many a happy hour seeing theatre there.  I think it's a great venue.   I was sort of an habitue of the place when Word Baker was Artistic Director.  Got to know him slightly when he attended some theatre conferences when we were in college.

Brenda Braxton can be seen weekdays on KGW Northwest NewsChannel 8 @ Sunrise with co-anchor Russ Lewis and on NewsChannel 8 @ Noon.

Brenda came to the Northwest from WAFB-TV (CBS) in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1989 where she served as the evening anchor and medical/health reporter.

She received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communications from the University of Portland and a Master of Journalism Degree from Louisiana State University.

In her spare time, Brenda enjoys gardening and interior design. She and her husband have a son and a daughter.

I received from the illustrious Tomovoz a package of delightful CDs.
One disk features well-known instrumentals followed by less well-known versions with words. Can't wait to hear "Telstar" with words.

One disk is themed entirely on Twisting songs,
One disk is classic "dead girl" type songs, like "Tell Laura I Love Her"
And one is movie themes.

I should amend that to say, songs that include tragedies of various sorts. In "Tell Laura I Love Her," it is actually the racecar driving boyfriend who dies a fiery death. "Deadman's Curve" is on there, "Ode to Billy Joe"... it is equal opportunity death.

However, I think part of the "fault" lies in the setting of the text.  It's very by the book, and not colloquial enough - especially for Fabrizio's social station.

But, boy, was that high B-flat beautiful last night!

*David mentioned that he had just been on again this past weekend... And that he actually went on soon after the opening since Matthew Morrison was sick.  And he announced last night that he would be singing a couple of more performance in September when Matthew Morrison takes his vacation...  However... It was announced that Matthew Morrison would be leaving the show at the end of August... So...

Is it horrible of me to be amused by the concept of a CD of "dead girl" songs?  Oh well, amused I am, horrible or not!

Not nearly as horrible as pondering "why" you might be amused.  Let's agree that you're amused and let Tom Cruise worry about the Scientological aspects of it (since psychiatry has been exposed by him as a fraud).

Watched a STAR TREK episode this afternoon, and the guest stars (playing older children about to become adults) were Michael J. Pollard and Kim Darby. This was a first season episode, so it was obviously right before Michael made his big splash in BONNIE AND CLYDE.

Amazing how these folks that got to be famous later turn up in these episodes from time to time.

I remember Rex Reed writing a report of the 1968 Oscars when Martha Raye got her special award, and he commented that poor Martha tripped on the monkey fur she was wearing as she walked out to receive it. Knowing what a cut-up she was, I wonder if she tripped deliberately. I did watch the Oscars that night, but I have no memory of that.

I haven't done a play in a long time (three years - MY THREE ANGELS was the last one), and the last time I did, I realized that despite all the choreography and needing to keep your voice in shape and as disease-free as possible for performances, I prefer doing musicals to plays.

Of course, all this happened Friday and Sunday and, although it was blocked out of the 24/7 feeds, you still find out what happened.

The house is in TURMOIL, and it's extremely fun to watch the live feeds and all the high drama and feuding and sniping.

Those who are following the action via the CANOE! Jam site are up-to-date and pretty much know what has happened, but even that site can't deliver all the wrongheaded notions some folks have been perpetrating and using to rile up other folks.  It's a zoo in which the hyenas are running around braying while the wise monkeys sit in their cages and wait.

DR Charles Pogue - I, too, enjoyed many performances there back in the mid-late 1970's.  The Playhouse looks great - I hadn't been there in ages.   Yesterday's event was held in the Shelterhouse and was socio-political (not theatrical).  Being in that space really made me want to attend performances there again and I even felt some twinges of wanting to perform (not there, of course)

Back from the LACC meeting - long, but it went well.  Interesting tidbit:  Did you know that both Donna Reed AND Alexis Smith got their first movie contracts as a result of appearing in the same play at LACC?  The play was The Night of January 16th.  They were both seen by talent scout Milt Lewis (who I met when I was going to LACC - he always came to the shows there), and they both got contracts.

MBarnum: Where on Holt?  You can take Laurel Canyon, then cross Sunset and Laurel becomes Crescent Heights.  You can continue south on Crescent Heights for miles - if you give me a block number I can tell you where you'll need to turn to cut over to Holt, which will be to your right (west).

DRMATTH - I remember Miss Martha Raye's Oscar appearance vividly, and it was my impression from the way she tripped to her facial expression afterwards, to the audience reaction, that she was doing her famous "walk & trip" - it was hilarious, and a tremendous balance to her touching and heartfelt acceptance speech.  No one deserved the honor more.

Martha Raye stories among her fellow performers and among the men she visited in the armed services are legion - look them up sometime on the net.

And she was FUNNY!!!!  8)

Martha Raye to Bob Burns in RHYTHM ON THE RANGE:

It's weird that I don't consider learning music and lyrics as part of the memorization process when learning a musical. Unless there is challenging harmony to learn (a la FOREVER PLAID), usually the music just "comes" to me as we rehearse. With plays, there are no production numbers so there are ALL these words to learn.

Plays to me just seem so much more of a challenge to learn than a musical though really a musical is probably more difficult. Maybe they just seem easier to me because I've done so many more of them than plays.

I agree, Matt, all the musical numbers do seem to make musicals easier to memorize (choreography aside, of course).  That being said, I've always learned my dialogue in musicals just as quickly as my lyrics (harmonies come very easily to me, learning them before anything else at all).  I think it's just having it split into two different categories that makes it seem a bit less intimidating.  I look forward to the challenge of learning a decent-sized role without any songs to break up the dialogue... first time in SEVEN years for me.

Not wrong to me.  As you said, it's been 30 years.  And even with countless high school/college/community theater productions in the 70s and 80s, there's a whole new generation of folks out there who have never seen it or heard of it.

They have heard of "Wicked," so it doesn't hurt to put in a plug if it might catch someone's attention.

As for "Wicked" being a craze with kids and teens...well, as one adult who saw it twice in San Francisco pre-Broadway, I have to tell you there were no kids in the audiences I saw it with, and yet EVERYone was standing and cheering...like they do on Broadway, so I'm told.

I don't suppose it's much different from someone doing a production of "Jesus Christ, Superstar" and putting in parens (from the composer of "Phantom of the Opera"-- which I presume would be the selection over "Sunset Boulevard" or some of ALW's more recent scores).

No, I haven't dropped off the face of the earth.  I'm just exhausted.  Friday I spent preparing for my sister's baby shower.  Saturday I was running around like crazy (the baby shower was at 2pm).  Then Sunday I had to get up early to meet to get a coupon at 10am so we could buy some baby stuff.  Then sunday night was Mamma mia (an hour before my aunt called to say that she was very sick/had to go to the hospital and could not go). So we had to find a replacement with less than an hour.  And then monday/tues i had my sister's niece and nephew.  And they do not sit down for a minute.  So basically I am completely warn out!  I have briefly read most of the posts (and DR RLP i did receive your email about BB).

Yes I agree the show tonight should be good.  Although we already know what happens.  Although I do think it will be interesting to see how they show they whole james thing on tv.

This is going to have to a quick good evening folks because we have a storm brewing with lots of thunder boomers.

I’m very sorry that I don’t have any pictures to share of the shuttle launch.  I was so hoping to get some nice ones from our 22nd floor at work but the blasted dust from the Sahara made everything so hazy, we couldn’t see a thing.  Drat and double drat.

I only hope that they come home as safe as they left.

Yes, I will be in NYC on that Monday night and I was honestly wondering what I was going to do since the theaters are all dark that night.

I’m planning on a bit of sight seeing during the day.  I’ve been to NYC 3 times now and very been anywhere near  Ms. Liberty.  I thought I’d get up extra early and go have a look/see and at least spend the morning down around that way.

I also want to go see the zoo I missed the last time in Central Park!

Yesterday, one of my co-workers brought in a batch of tomatoes and fresh basil for the rest of us to share.

I took some home last night, making a stop at my local deli for some fresh mozzarella, and I threw together a nice Caprese salad.

I have enough left to make another tonight, but found that we still have more than enough tomatoes/basil left here in the office to take just as much tonight as we did yesterday.

Man!  I love this stuff!

I'll answer this one. Mr. Burnham's keys are actually the original keys - Mr. Morrison's were lowered to fit his voice.

If only they'd lowered them for the Seattle production, as well.  Fabrizio's high notes (can't recall the actor's name, and don't have the playbill handy) were the musical weak spot of the show at that point.

I hadn't heard that, Pogue, about Oliver Twist being the thing that turned Rod McKuen's voice into that smoky rasp. If you do listen to his late 50's folkish LPs, he definitely had a cleaner voice. I wonder if he smoked. Dylan said he quit smoking for a bit, and that's how he was able to change his voice for the Nashville Skyline, "Lay Lady Lay" period.

Be careful, Michael!  I understand that Jose's bedroom has been reclassified as one of those "special interest" establishments.

While I am in NY I will be staying at the very, very small Washington Jefferson Hotel.  http://www.washingtonjeffersonhotel.com

There is a good chance I will be recreating Danise’s experience with the Midway, meaning small and no bathtub.  The hotel looks nice and clean and appears to be only a five minute walk to the Comfort Inn.  I tried to get as close as possible.  It was frustrating the Comfort Inn, and most hotels I checked, were available for every night I need, except one.

For those who might want this info:

DR George - with my "apologies" to DR Dan (the Man)... As DR Jason pointed out, Fabrizio's music was lowered for Matthew Morrison.

And unless there's a star coming into a show, it is very rare that a song or songs will be lowered - or higher-ed - for a certain performer.  The copyist fees really add up.  However, with most copyist's using computer software nowadays, the turn around time for transpositions is a matter of minutes rather than hours.  But, still, since copyist's charge by the page - and sometimes by the measure... multiply by that the number of players in a pit...  It really does add up after a while - even for just one song.

As for the Seattle run of Light in the Piazza, Fabrizio was played by either Stephen di Pasquale or Wayne Wilcox (who I just worked with at Vassar).  -And the Clara for both productions was Celia Keenan-Bolger.  And she was replaced when the show came into New York, however, she got into Spelling Bee - and landed a Tony nomination too!

-Don't you just love happy endings?

:)

...And I think the last show that regularly customized songs for replacement performers was A Chorus Line.  In one of those books about the show, there is a mention of how the music librarian was always on his/her toes.  And after working with Fran Liebergall, the music supervisor for the show, she confirmed that there were nights when none of the solos were in their original keys!

Yes, Celia was excellent.  Still can't remember which of those guys was Fabrizio, but I still say his high notes were the musical weak spot (particularly in "Passagiatta").

I could never audition for Mike in A CHORUS LINE because the key the song is in, I suppose, is Wayne Cilento's original key which was too high for my voice. So, I made do with Greg and Don.

Well, I love CAROUSEL, and I think Gordon MacRae's performance is the finest on record and easily the best one I've ever seen. I did not see Raitt at Lincoln Center (though I have the cast recording), but I did see the most recent revival, and Michael Hayden just didn't do it for me AT ALL.

Well, EMPIRE came to a close tonight with Octavius SPARING Marc Antony's life, not a sign of Cleopatra anywhere, and no climactic sea battle. (In fact, Antony's legion turned on him and joined Octavius midway through the final battle.) The fates of the assassins including Brutus and Cassius were not revealed other than showing Antony taking them prisoner.

Not enough historical fact in this series to fill a thimble, but the men were very attractive. That's the most praise I can give it.

We finally got a break in the weather here.  It's in the 60s now and was only in the 70s today. Yesterday the air conditioning was out in our office building - and the windows don't open. It was 91.7 degrees in my office when I arrived at work in the morning, so I sent everyone home.  It was much better today, but still not back to normal. Hopefully it will be fixed before the next heat wave hits later this week!

The storms here the other night were pretty bad.  It's the middle of The Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI)  10,000 people in tents and they got hit with 70 mph winds. Unfortunately a tree fell on a man from NYC and killed him.  Pretty sad.

Shades of "10 Commandments"?? ::)
