Well, you've read the notes, the notes were bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, and now it is time for you to post until the bright-eyed and bushy-tailed cows come home.

And the word of the day is: UHURU!

Good early morning to everyone. I hope you all have a great week.

About the last word that I tried...I just typed in letters and didn't realize that it was a real word. ::)
-
Good morning, all!
-
I can't say this abdominal pain is going away, but I did sleep well until around 5:00 when Annabelle woke me as she vomited at the foot of the bed.
-
This morning I have a Zoom meeting at 10:30 with my ballet collaborator Doug to discuss the Big Dream section of the ballet's Act Two.
-
I am uncomfortable because of the abdominal pains, but I'm also in a rather bad mood. I don't know why.
-
the Big Dream section
I had a dream!

~~~FEEL BETTER PRONTO VIBES~~~ for DR elmore3003!!!!!!!
-
Last night I finally watched the Nature broadcast about Pale Male, the red-tailed hawk was was a New York superstar for 32 years. He was found dead this year. The documentary did not include the huge brouhaha when the co-op board of the Fifth Avenue building removed his nest; instead, it focused on his first years after arriving in NYC in 1990. No one knows why a one-year-old hawk settled in Central Park, but he eventually found a mate, whom the birdwatchers named First Love and they eventually nested on a ledge of this Fifth Avenue building.
-
The hawks produced three babies, and the documentary primarily focused on the hawk family: the difficulties of teaching three fledglings to fly from a nest over 120 feet above the ground. They generally learn to fly by flying from tree to tree. The documentary was a good Father's Day surprise since Pale Male was a fantastic father, hunting five times a day to feed the babies pigeons, rats and other birds and rodents. There were also interviews with the hundreds of New Yorkers who became fascinated by this family of red tails, including the author of this wonderful book.
-
Good morning, all.
The notes gave me a craving for some Chinese chicken salad. I've had it, but not for years. I searched to see if BK had ever described Stanley's in any detail, but I don't think so. I went to Google and looked at a few descriptions and pictures. I'll have to see what's available in my neck of the woods, or better yet, see how challenging iti would be to pick up ingredients and make a big batch myself.
-
The one thing that surprised me is that it seems to always call for lettuce, not cabbage. The photos make that look perfectly logical, but I had always imagined it to be more of an Chinese or Asian style cole slaw - plus the chicken. I guess not!
BK: Were you listening to Dead Ringer from an online source, or was some wonderful CD ever issued?
I only ever had the vinyl - and sadly, for some reason, only the mono.
As a lad, I was very much taken with the Davis & Crawford films that followed Baby Jane, and I remember thrilling to Dead Ringer. I'm looking at Davis' filmography, and had forgotten that that one came out before Charlotte (if the IMDb dates are anywhere near accurate). And that was followed pretty closely by The Nanny. But the score to be thrilled to, and always remembered, is Dead Ringer.
Kristi's office now has Juneteenth as a company holiday, so she's here and I think we're going to tackle a couple of housecleaning projects together later.
-
Enjoyed hearing about DR Rodzinski's adventure in the sky.
I'm probably the only one here who has ZERO fear of small planes (as long as I trust the pilot or the company), and who has the private pilot license to prove it.
(Don't get excited. I haven't flown since 1985, and the license can only be used when you've passed the standard medical exam and passed a check ride with an instructor within the past two years.) (But it's there to use, should I ever decide to jump through the hoops and do so.)
-
Back in 1975, a friend and co-worker had a license, and invited me along on an hour-long sightseeing & practice flight he'd reserved a plane for at Santa Monica Airport. I'll have to check this, but as I recall, that was in the afternoon of Christmas Eve in 1975, a perfectly gorgeous day in Southern California. That ride was the greatest thrill, and I regaled him with questions on what it would take for me to learn how to fly. My parents were visiting from Ohio that week, and I'm afraid I talked their ears off about that flight the rest of the day. It took me another year before I finally had the chance to jump in, but I took the ground school and then the flying lessons starting in 1977, and a year later I had my piece of paper.
I was living over the hill in L.A., but I did all of this at Van Nuys Airport because the huge company I worked for had divisions in the Valley, and one of their many extracurricular benefits was a flying club through which I met the most wonderful people and private pilots.
Before I was to move and go through other everyday life changes that saw me eventually giving up the flying activities, I had decided that my very next "upgrade" would be to go out to some lake or wherever it was available and take lessons in a seaplane to get that rating added to my license. That didn't happen, but I had very much looked forward to it. Weirdly, though, to this day I have never been in a seaplane.
Wow, George, I fell asleep last night and never imagined 9 pages was a possibility. That was yeoman’s work by you and BK.
-
Elmore, I recall Mary Tyler Moore was a big part of the fight to save Pale Male’s nest.
-
I was walking up by Riverside Park once and people were gathered looking up at a tree, and I looked and there was that hawk not 15 feet up, on a branch, standing on one claw. With his other, he was eating a big rat like a it was a hot dog.
-
Well, I can't compete with Pale Male, but I just made a 3-egg ham, cheese and onion omelet that was beyond delicious.
It started yesterday when I picked up some deli "Virginia" (whatever that was ever supposed to mean) ham for sandwiches. It turned out to be of that cheap rubbery texture that I can't stand, so first I knew never to buy that again. Then I thought about what to do with the remaining half pound or so, and I decided to dice it up into very tiny pieces (which worked perfectly) and brown them in butter a little to get them warm and more flavorful. I had some finely grated cheddar and a little dollop of diced onion left over from something, and somehow, magic happened.
-
I can't actually flip the eggs, never learned that, but I spread 'em thin in a large skillet, and I have a very wide soft spatula that's great for sliding under the cooked side and lifting it to do the flip. Today's was perfect, probably my personal best. While side two cooked on the lowest heat, I added the cheese to get it melting, then the warm ham and the onion, and folded the whole thing over into a semi-circle. Somehow, my proportions were just perfect and the blend of flavors could not have been better.
-
I thought I'd posted a picture or two of me and one of the planes I flew back then.
In fact, I know I have.
But I knew this would have been long before DR Rodzinski made his historic return to HHW, so I had to mention that after this weekend's fun. I'll see if I can find the picture.
-
Happy Monday! Happy Juneteenth!
Local post office, banks and federal/state buidings are closed for the day.
Suits me, 'cause I am one tired old dawg today.
Don't know why. I slept like a log, but woke up and couldn't get comfortable enough in bed to fall back to sleep.
All the news this morning is Trump-centric and centered around weekend comments by Republicans for him and against him.
-
Severe storms are plaguing the southeast.
Fortunately, we are peripheral to them. The skies are bright gray right now.
I am not sure what weather we will have today, other than "weather" of some sort or other.
I hope bad weather isn't a major obstacle for the rest of you.
I went to our country club yesterday to have Father's Day lunch with cousin Butch, his afianced Sharon and his son, Benjamin, who is 20 and a rising junior at Wofford College.
I got there early. Hardly anyone there yet. I sat in the lobby waiting for my lunch companions. As the minutes passed, throngs of folks arrived and began lining up. I began to wonder if my party would ever arrive.
And then Benjamin appeared and told me they had been there for a half hour and were in a different part of the club, and they had already been through the line and gotten their food.
I got in line, but it just wouldn't move. I was there for about 15 minutes, and fiinally gave it up. I went into the dining area and found my party and sat down. They had been waiting for me and their food was getting cold. I urged them to eat, please; I wasn't hungry, I said.
Actually, I was a bit put out. Butch and Sharon are NEVER early. And I am always at the door waiting for them to help Butch into the club (he is ambulatory but needs assistance as he is not fully recovered from a stroke).
I didn't make an issue of it. I apologized for not deciding to abandon the line earlier. Actually, the lines aren't regulated by manners, IMO. A man I was behind was suddenly five people ahead of me as people came up to them to speak and then joined them. It occurred to me later that, as a member of a party already inside, I was "entitled' to break line and get my food so I could join them. That always irks me, though...folks who are in line should get priority over those who come later.
-
All that negative karma aside, I had a good time talking with Sharon and Benjamin (Butch didn't talk much except to express his joy over Benjamin surprising him by being there). I knew Benjamin would be with us, but it was to be a surprise.
Benjamin is a very personable, intelligent guy. Very smart. Always does well in school. He might have gone to West Point, the Naval Academy or the Citadel had he not fallen in love with a girl who goes to Converse College. Wofford is nearby and they are now living together.
I was a bit surprised that he ignored the scouts from the military schools which offered him a full ride.
His dad isn't able to completely fund his college tuition, but in consonance with his ex-wife and some scholarships, Benjamin is getting by. He is also working transcribing medical prescriptions. It pays him very well...about $100 a day.
-
After the line had abated, I went through and got a to-go order, including dessert and take-away cup of tea.
Once home, I immediately joined my weekly Zoom chat. I was half an hour late, but we had a good talk and wrapped things up around 3:30 p.m.
I then warmed up my lunch and it was terrific.
-
I would have been quite perturbed, DR Ron Pulliam.
Glad you were able to avoid having it spoil your day.
Elmore, I recall Mary Tyler Moore was a big part of the fight to save Pale Male’s nest.
Yes, indeed. Her apartment is in the building where the birds nested. Pale Male's mate First Love tragically died after eating a pigeon someone had poisoned. At the time of the Nature episode, he had been through three mates and nineteen chicks.
DR RON PULLIAM the exact same thing has happened to me a couple of times - with folks who are NEVER early!
The actor on Perry Mason is Martin Horsey - who was the original Artful Dodger in OLIVER in London in 1961.....
-
I loved that documentary, Pale Male. But not again. JB was very upset by it. Wanted to protect me from the evil hawk.
-
Thanks for the travel vibes.
-
DR Jennifer has inspired me to start Quordle, which is quite fun. I don’t get all four words all of the time, but a word in the last day or two there helped me get Wordle today in 3.
-
OMG, I cannot stand something like that happening. (I'm referring, of course, to DR Ron's restaurant adventure.)
It isn't even just my being early or late, or someone else's being early or late. It's the whole out-of-sync quality of the experience that completely blows it for me.
That food line would have totally killed it for me, too. And I can't stand being the last one with food and being the only one left eating, in any event - doesn't matter what the circumstances are. I, too, would choose to just blow it off and wait till later, however hungry I might be.
-
Here are a couple of the pictures - me in the Cessna 150 (two-seater) I learned in, and a close personal friend in the Cessna 172 (four-seater) I later flew.
And yes, I still have Snoopy. He needs a good cleaning.
Pretty infuriating experience, DR Ron. At least you got a nice visit out of it.
I did. As for the infuriating part, I'm more mad at myself for not getting in line when it began forming.
As we were saying our goodbyes, Benjamin hugged me and said I had been an excellent role model for him.
I was nonplussed as my contact with him has been sparse over the years. When I expressed surprise, he said it was because of things my relatives have told him about me over the years and because of the way I have related to him when we were together.
I must say I have thought of that quite a bit.
-
Back - from two stops that should have taken 15 minutes but took about 45 minutes due to some extreme construction being done on a two-year project of road widening on the main drag through here.
But I got the cat food, and just in the Nick Redman of time.
-
DR Ron, now I know why Keith always has been text and say we have arrived ;)
Sharon normally does this to let me know how far away they are because she knows I'm waiting.
She apologized yesterday for not letting me know they were inside, and she said that Butch was so excited at seeing Benjamin that it skipped her mind.
Last summer or fall, I bought a three-pack of nice safety goggles to replace the ones that come "free" with things like chain saws and other such. They were made to be more comfortable to wear, and probably easier to see through and to clean. A couple of them were clear, and one was tinted for use in bright sun.
I determined that there was still plenty of use to be had out of the freebies, so I took the three out of their bubble pack, or whatever they came in, and put them safely away...
So would somebody please tell me where in the HELL they are?
-
ChasSmith, I've written of Stanley's many times - both old location and new. I went to the old location a ton of times. I've mostly taken out from the new location. Here's their Chinese chicken salad.
-
I'm up, I'm up - seven hours of sleep, thanks to endless ringing of phones. So - beware: I got an email from ATT billing saying I owed over 700 bucks on my wireless. So, I immediately got incensed because I thought maybe they hadn't cancelled the account as I asked (I do have proof, I just didn't remember). So, I figured I'd call tomorrow. The email looked super legit. Many of the phone ringers this morning were from ATT. So, I hit dial and called the number back and guess what? INDIA. He asked who I was. I said you tell me. He asked if I was and said my name. I said tell me what you want without confirming my name. He said it was about my bill. I said all the way from India - wow - this sounds like it could be real. He said are you and said my name. I said what do you want? He said this call is going nowhere. I said you bet it's going nowhere scammer and he hung up. BEWARE, you've been warned. I did a little research, too. The email scam is fairly new and looks real, but isn't. The big clew is the number they have to call - 833 area code, which is a known scammer area code. BEWARE. And the ATT call this morning? From an 805 area code, which is Calabasas up there and no, ATT would never call you from anything but a proper 800 or 877 number. They're good at this stuff, though, until you actually hear the Indian voice and then you know exactly what's what.
-
I guess the first question that I have not seen answered is how is there not a homing beacon of some sort on the sub so if contact is lost, it can still be located?
Grease was NOT the word for JRand.
-
OMG, that AT&T scam call. I don't think I've gotten both emails and calls that go together quite like that. Hideous.
BK did everything right, in making THEM give information, and NEVER answering "Yes" to anything. Never EVER say "Yes" to them, because the right scammer will edit that into you agreeing to anything and everything. I've tried to train myself to think that way, should I ever get on one of these calls again.
We pick up very few calls from strange numbers, but occasionally Nathan will, just on a hunch and feeling ornery. He goes through pretty much the same routine. It drives the scammers nuts, and they're usually the ones who hang up.
-
Embarassing.
Just figured out that The Four Tops's song is "Ain't No Woman Like the One I Got."
I won't even say what I have been thinking that was for all these years.
I get those kinds of calls quite often. I sometimes play along when they tell me they represent my cable company or my health care provider. When I specifically request they name my company or provider, they hang up. I guess they thought I didnt notice their very Indian accents.
I scold them. I ask them if their mother is aware they spend their days trying to rob old ladies and that they should be ashamed of themselves .
They usually hang up at that point.
By the time John got to Phoenix I was catching up
-
Doesn’t scan
-
Had a spicy Eyetalian sandwich from Subway. I'll try to keep it at that.
-
Then I turned on the TV and fell asleep instantly - must have been out an hour.
-
Happy flight, John, don’t forget to wave at Laura as you head out
-
I've shaved and will shower in about ten minutes.
-
So where have I been?
-
Then I'll mosey on over to the theater at six-fifteen.
-
On Friday I stopped at church on the way home from work
-
Ironed some linens
-
And set the altar up for Sunday service
-
I came home, changed out of my work clothes , sat in the recliner and fell asleep
-
I didn’t wake up until Vixdad was shutting down the house to go to bed
-
So I went to bed
-
Saturday I had to do prep work for the luncheon I’m hosting after next weeks service
-
Scammers should all die a painful, horrible death.
-
It is our associate Pastor’s last day with us as she is retiring and she and her husband are moving to North Carolina.
-
Made it to Phoenix. Will board soon for San Antonio
Almost home.
-
So I went to Costco and ordered a sheet cake
-
-
And since it is also her birthday on Sunday I bought a second cake as her birthday cake
-
Then I went to BJs and ordered four cold cut platters, 2 “American style” and 2 “Italian style”
Also 100 dinner rolls
-
And then a browsed around pricing up the cost of salad makings
-
So I went to Costco and ordered a sheet cake
I read somewhere that Costco no longer has sheet cakes. I am not surprised to find they still have them.
-
We had sweet potato wedge fries tonight.
-
I do not care for page seven.
-
Next I hit party city where I browsed around until I decided on the tablecloths, napkins, plates, and plastic cutlery I wanted
-
They were the best sweet potato fries ever, and they weren't fried.
-
They were baked or air fried, not sure which.
-
Then I went back to the church because I had to see what condiments and serving dishes were available
-
And since the altar flowers had been delivered I placed those on the altar flower stands
-
So I went to Costco and ordered a sheet cake
I read somewhere that Costco no longer has sheet cakes. I am not surprised to find they still have them.
Actually it was a half sheet size, I don’t think they do full sheet cakes anymore
-
Then I did the grocery shopping, came home and put the groceries away
-
Once I again I sat in the recliner and immediately fell asleep
-
On Sunday morning I had to get up and out a little extra early because of the “fun run”
-
One of the citizens in our town was the Fire Chief for NYC and was leading the rescue mission on 9/11
-
Unfortunately he was one of the casualties
-
The road I live on ( and our local post office) were both named for him
-
Every Fathers Day since the event there is a fundraiser fun run that shuts down my street from about 830am until 11
-
So I have to hustle to get to church before I get blocked in
-
But I made it, barely, they were putting up the barriers behind me as I drove through
-
So after church , I reset the altar for the next service
-
Took part in a meeting instructing the new assisting ministers as to their duties
-
And headed out to deliver communion to my four shut ins
-
Then I called Vixdad and determined the barriers had been moved
-
I just heard on the news that Utah has a group looking to ban passages in The Bible that deal with sex and other vices.
The person being interviewed said there is a group of six who have been stirring the pot in the state and have identified 94 works of literature they want censored or banned.
I figure they are all folks who never read, who vote out of fear instead of intellect, and who likely didn't go to college/university. I could be wrong, of course. They could have degrees, but they probably don't read or cannot read.
-
So I bought him an egg sandwich at the deli and brought it home
-
Then I gave him his presents, a nice cool casual shirt for the summer and a membership card to the cradle of aviation museum.
-
So I went to Costco and ordered a sheet cake
I read somewhere that Costco no longer has sheet cakes. I am not surprised to find they still have them.
Actually it was a half sheet size, I don’t think they do full sheet cakes anymore
I think it's because the full sheet cakes just didn't sell. People want cakes, but they don't need a full sheet cake size, and they don't like the expense of one.
-
Then the Vixter called and we had a lovely hour or more visit by video call
-
After that we picked up my mom and the three of us went to the cemetery and left flowers at my dad’s grave and at my Mom’s Dad’s grave
-
We have a bake shop in beautiful downtown Edgefield. They don't actually bake their own goods...the get them from a bakery in Lexington SC, which is about 60 miles away.
A slice of cake is about $8.00. A sweet roll is about $4. And none are truly very good.
Happily they do sandwiches and things at much better pricing.
If you buy a cake from QVC or some of those online sites, the cost is $60 to $80 for a 9-inch cake.
I could bake a whole slew of those cakes for that much money.
-
After that we went to the cradle of Aviation museum so Vixdad could try out his fancy new membership card and we could watch a movie in the planetarium
-
I understand from my mom and Vixdad that the movie was very interesting
-
I myself had an unexpected nap
-
Tovala is now letting its subscribers in on other vendors who sell products that cook via the Tovala scanner (you scan a code and the oven sets the correct temperature and time).
One pizza company offers two deep dish 9-inch pizzas. Price: $80.
Another company offers six scones: Price $40 (I've never had a scone worth $6+).
They also offer bagels, but I never have looked into what those cost.
If you bake and can market your foods to the Tovala standard, you can really make money.
-
Then we took a brief tour of the museum , we just showed Mom the Lunar Landing Modules. Section
-
Finally we headed out for dinner at that fancy burger place we went to on Mothers Day
-
The meal was fine, but a bit pricy
-
Then we brought mom home and came home ourselves
-
I made a nice pot of tea
-
Served Vixdad and poured a cup for myself
-
And sitting in the recliner , promptly fell asleep
-
Today I went to work
-
Our office was open although most of the businesses in the building were closed for Juneteenth
-
But it was so quiet that at 3 pm we were told to go on home
-
So I went and had a nice visit with WFO
-
Then on my way home I stopped and filled up my car with $3.49 a gallon petrol
-
Then home again home again jiggity jig
-
Vixdad kindly offered to take me to the Roadhouse for dinner
-
We haven’t been there for months
-
We had an excellent meal, with excellent service
-
Then we came home where I made a nice pot of tea
-
So I went to Costco and ordered a sheet cake
I read somewhere that Costco no longer has sheet cakes. I am not surprised to find they still have them.
Actually it was a half sheet size, I don’t think they do full sheet cakes anymore
Thanks, not that I plan on buying one.
-
And now I sit in the recliner hoping to stay awake long enough to drink my tea
-
Unfortunately he was one of the casualties
:(
-
The road I live on ( and our local post office) were both named for him
That's nice.
Scholarships for children of firefighters . I’m not sure if it’s all firefighters or those who were injured in the line of duty
I had heard about the Bible banning but originally supposed it was a group trying to show how ridiculous the book bans were, but I guess they’re actually “true believers”
I have purchased many over the years. They’re delicious
Happy flight, John, don’t forget to wave at Laura as you head out
I did, but since I had an aisle seat and the shades were down, I doubt DR Laura saw me.
-
I'm up, I'm up - seven hours of sleep, thanks to endless ringing of phones. So - beware: I got an email from ATT billing saying I owed over 700 bucks on my wireless. So, I immediately got incensed because I thought maybe they hadn't cancelled the account as I asked (I do have proof, I just didn't remember). So, I figured I'd call tomorrow. The email looked super legit. Many of the phone ringers this morning were from ATT. So, I hit dial and called the number back and guess what? INDIA. He asked who I was. I said you tell me. He asked if I was and said my name. I said tell me what you want without confirming my name. He said it was about my bill. I said all the way from India - wow - this sounds like it could be real. He said are you and said my name. I said what do you want? He said this call is going nowhere. I said you bet it's going nowhere scammer and he hung up. BEWARE, you've been warned. I did a little research, too. The email scam is fairly new and looks real, but isn't. The big clew is the number they have to call - 833 area code, which is a known scammer area code. BEWARE. And the ATT call this morning? From an 805 area code, which is Calabasas up there and no, ATT would never call you from anything but a proper 800 or 877 number. They're good at this stuff, though, until you actually hear the Indian voice and then you know exactly what's what.
Yikes! :o
-
DR George - glad that you are able to take part in today's festivities.
Thanks, Singdaw. We ate and then played two games of Phase 10.
-
I lost both. ::)
-
Welcome home to DR JOHN G.
-
Oh, well...there will always be another game. ;)
-
I'm very tired after reading all of DR VIXMOM's adventures.
-
My sister won the first game, and my mom won the second game.
-
And then I came home.
-
Well I must say our set is most interesting and entertaining in itself.
-
Work continues on it.....
-
Page 10 finish the set dance.
Oh, and here's the garden sphere that we got for my mom:
I didn't know that they ever did full sheets.
-
But they also have reduced the available options. ::)
-
You can only get a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting, or a white cake with white frosting.
-
My favorite was always the chocolate cake with white frosting, but they don't allow that anymore.
-
How rude! >:(
-
Then I gave him his presents, a nice cool casual shirt for the summer and a membership card to the cradle of aviation museum.
Nice.
Very nice!
Welcome home DR John.
It is pretty.
I now have to get used to the temperature. The thermostat is taking its time to cool down the house.
For many years, Elma, Washington used to have a slug festival:
When I was in a barbershop chorus, we actually sang there...we did not have to partake of the slug foodstuffs. :P
Oh, no.
Thankfully the two that I know are fried were both from a bargain table.
-
Finishing up The Lover by Marguerite Duras. Slender novel thst I had read before. It’s very hypnotic.
-
And not what would be considered politically correct these days.
-
Duras helped write some of Alain Resnais’s films. So, it’s kinda like those.
-
I found my copy of the DVDs of Wives and Lovers. I don’t know if it’ll play in my DVD player. Might be the wrong region.
And I am going to try for bed.
Very informative report by David Pogue, a journalist who was on the same missing submersible in the summer of 2022. Pretty detailed and disturbing..
Back from a pretty good run-through - I gave notes after and then we ran some stuff. Mostly to do with pacing and energy, but each act ran 43 minutes.
More pacing!
Conserve energy!
Each act exactly 43 minutes. That’s excellent direction right there.
Let’s move this thing on…
I wrote them.
Has George gone down a rabbit hole or, at the very least, a rabid hole?
-
I won't do the new topic for five more minutes.
-
Yes, I did go down a rabbit hole:
Brutally Awkward Weddings: The groom at this wedding acted weird the whole time. Everyone was so furious with him—until they learned the dark truth. (https://www.msn.com/en-us/tv/recaps/brutally-awkward-weddings-the-groom-at-this-wedding-acted-weird-the-whole-time-everyone-was-so-furious-with-him-until-they-learned-the-dark-truth/ss-AA1cLpnA)
:D
-
Reading some of those awkward wedding stories, you'd think that some of them were rabid. ::)
-
Back and will change the day.
-
But not quite yet.
-
We're too close.
-
And it would be unseemly not to get to 350.
-
And here we are.
