Title: DAYS OF WANE AND ROSES

Well, you've read the notes, you've whizzed through the notes, even as the notes were waning, and now it is time for you to post until the whizzing cows come home - I think we all know how long it takes a whizzing cow.

Sparrow In The Treetop - Guy Mitchell
Sittin' in a Tree House - Marty Robbins
Bird on my Head - David Seville

My real list later.

I've just returned from visiting OzDerek who says hello.  He tires very quickly but is in good spirits.

Good morning, all!  Back to Toyland today; I only have one more week with the mighty Tom Murray before he's off to do ANYONE CAN WHISTLE at Ravinia and be musical director for WINESBURG OHIO in Philadelphia. He's been a fantastic right hand for the past 6 months, and I will miss his observations, his humor, and his computer work.  So, we've about a week to put the major chunk of this Toyland edition to bed.

Yesterday was tied up in a bit of housecleaning:  DARLING OF THE DAY is filed away, invoiced, and in the hands of the copyist, and my work space is all tidied for the next projects, which include some restoration of a Harold Arlen show and another Victor Herbert score, THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER.

DRTomovoz, send Derek my regards and best wishes.

TOD:
CD:  THE PRINCE OF THE PAGODAS and ONDINE, two contemporary scored I'm determined to learn to love; NEW GUY IN TOWN; Anna Netrebko and French operetta courtesy of DR Francois.
DVD:  The same Netflix picks I've been meaning to watch for the past two weeks, I forget what they are!
  VCR:  cheap porn

TOTD:  DVD "Madagascar" enjoyable but would not watch it again.

CD: Last to be handled! I've been copying "Boom Boom Baby" (Billy "Crash" Craddock) for OzDerek.
More music in the new day I guess.
I've been listening to Brian Wilson's "Smile" quite a bit lately.

Hello, Tom!

We are well on the island. Thanks for asking.

I am listening to Revolver at the moment. One of my favorite Beatles albums (Rubber Soul is one of the others). I then make a big jump to Broadway (and Off-Broadway) with 110 in the Shade (OBC), 1776 (OBC), Romance, Romance (OBC), When Pigs Fly (Off-Bway), Whoop-De-Doo (Off-Bway), a live recording from 1982 by Jackie Cain and Roy Kral of their Sondheim show at Michael's Pub, and last, but certainly not least, New Guy in Town!

We are about to watch "Spooks" on TV. It's called M.I.5. in the USA I think.  Great editing and great tension.

DR Ben.  I played "Revolver" only last week. It's a great album.

I did, indeed, survive the sleep study! Shakalaka Technician sends her love. She hooked me up to my machines and put me to bed last night - at 8:30! Who goes to bed at 8:30?!?! The first act of a show has barely started at 8:30!! I watched TV until 12:30 and then I dozed off.

I have to say, that the CPAP machine, bizarre as it may be, is BRILLIANT! I slept so well (once I finally got to sleep). I don't think I woke up once the whole night and the guy this morning told me I didn't snore at all.

I got very nauseated on the train coming home this morning. I think my blood sugar levels were low - I hadn't had anything to eat or drink since 7:30 last night! My hands were shaky and my knees were weak. I felt like puking on my own two feet.

But, here I am and it's all over. I have to make an appointment for an office visit to go over my charts and actually order my very own CPAP machine for use in my home environment, but as far as I know - no more sleep studies! Or wire hangers! EVER!!

I just read that Ms. Alice Ripley will be playing Lily in the concert version of ON THE TWENTIETH CENTURY in Boston. Mr. George Dvorsky will be playing the Kevin Kline role.

Now, I love Alice, but...that seems like odd casting to me. Madeline Kahn...Judy Kaye...Alice Ripley. I dunno...

I saw the original Broadway production with Judy Kaye and it has always been one of my favorite shows and scores.

It did turn out that I had a 101 degree fever at the time and I didn't know it and when I got back to Montreal the next day I was in bed for the next week.

For Godzilla fans;
Yesterday, I encountered a beautiful statue of the first (original model) Godzilla in front of a new theater in Hibiya which many theaters have been for many, many years, in the center of Tokyo. A very old and historical theater, in which the legendary Godzilla was born in 1954, was reconstructed for its decrepitude a few months ago and the statue has been raised, for HIS great achievement and remarkable feats, by the Toho Co.
On the plate of the plinth, a well-known line of Prof. Kyohei Yamane(paleontologist), from the first Godzilla film in 1954, has been engraved.
“ I CAN’T POSSIBLY BELIEVE THAT THIS GODZILLA IS THE LAST ONE”
(I’m not sure how it’s been translated in English in the film …. Hope the fans know it)
And this is the one.

DR MS, try as I might, I cannot take a liking to any anime.  I've seen the three you mention, plus Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away and Tokyo Godfathers, and none of them does it for me.  It just seems to me that in all anime, there's always an underlaying silliness and sticky-sweet sentimentality that prevents me from relating to the story and its characters.  And I always find the animation itself to be on the cheap side.

The only anime that I have ever appreciated on any level were the cartoon shows of my youth--Astro Boy, Prince Planet, Gigantor and Tobor the 8th Man.

Now, Godzilla films--thems I could relate to!

Thanks for the lovely pictures, DR Hisaka.  Especially the last one, where it looks like Godzilla is having a casual daytime stroll amongst the people of Tokyo.

I wish I still had my Aurora model of Godzilla.

Happy friday to all - except to those whose day is now Saturday.

I do have media in my players today:
Lewis Gilbert's film of Harold Robbins' THE ADVENTURERS is in my dvd player; I've watched until the intermission.  Anyone else have an opinion on this one?

As for cds, I've been listening to nothing except THE POGUES:
If I Should Fall From Grace with God
Rum, sodomy and the Lash
Streams of Whiskey
as well as Shane MacGowan and The Popes' Crock of Gold.

Jose, your Dance 10, Looks 3 story reminded me of a special casting session we had a Nickelodeon.  We asked the kids to sing a song a capella and dance/move around.  It was for a short promo spot, nothing big and we were expecting maybe Happy Birthday or Yankee Doodle.

One little girl, about 8 or 9 years old, sang Missy Elliot's "Get Your Freak On" complete with booty shaking...soooo disturbing.

Good morning!  Back here at the Foundation Center in Cleveland for a meeting of the Advisory Board at 11:30.  The hotel where I stayed last night had no business center, so I could not log on or check my email or anything.  If I traveled more regularly, I'd have to have a laptop, but for the time being will just have to make sure there's a publicly-accessible computer available.

My meetings yesterday were finished earlier than I'd expected so I was able to spend some time on a driving tour of Cuyahoga Valley National Park, which has been created to preserve the Ohio-Erie Canal.  It's very pretty and if I'd had different clothes and shoes (and a trail buddy) I'd have hiked a little.  As it was, I just drove the Towpath Parkway a bit and stopped at the visitor center, on Lock 38.  I saw a red-tailed hawk and a blue jay.  No photos, though, because I discovered that the batteries were dead in my digital camera and the replacements were back at the hotel.

TOD - CD (car, for the trip home this afternoon) - Carole King The Living Room Tour

DVD/VCR - haven't been home since 8am Wednesday, so I have no idea.

Chuck and Julieanne Pogue made an album?  I must hear it.

Great Godzilla photographs.

Speaking of sleep, I had a good night except that it rained off and on (which is usually condusive to sleep), but this was rain and THUNDER. Thunder woke me up at least twice during the night and maybe more than that.

Heaven knows we have needed this rain, and the temps this morning (low 70s) are quite a delightful change from what we've suffered through earlier this week.

I have a problem with folks who are chronically late. It happens to us all from time to time, especially if you live in areas with heavy traffic patterns, but I really get ticked off by folks who are ALWAYS late with no excuse except that "that's the way I am."

Of course, I tend to irritate people for the opposite reason. I am invariably early to things when folks are really not ready to receive guests yet.

DR HISAKA thank you so much for the terrific GODZILLA photos!  I am sure DR MBARNUM will appreciate them as well - when he returns from the Entertainment Capital of the World!

DRJOSE - I like "On the Right Track" as well - but my Pippin and Leading Player are not the BEST dancers in the world....well...probably not even in Greencastle - but I never tell them they're doing anything difficult - I just break it down and do it 8 counts at a time, tedious, but effective.  That's how I work, anyways!

E&T moi is the fault of the construction going on next door.  Our phone line runs through their property, and they ran a bulldozer through the line yesterday...again!

I think they knew they'd done the wrong thing, as they ran off just as der Brucer ran out of the house, wondering why he'd lost the phone line.  (He'd been talking to a West coast pal of his at the time.)

The official word from the phone company is that they'll be out to fix the line late Sunday night.  For right now, der B has MacGyvered the line, so we've a connection of sorts.

We've been busy enough over the last week that I haven't any real media report to make.

Der B did take a movie for the lads to watch on Wednesday: L'il Abner.  The younger lad, it turns out, loves musicals.  He loved L'il Abner, even if some of the satire went right over his head.  (The older lad insists he doesn't like anything but animation.  His loss.)

Thursday, we were back over with the grandlads, because the older one had left some clothing in der B's car that will be needed when they go on vacation.  At one point, the lads were watching Scooby-Doo, the movie, and I joined them...for a very brief moment.  That they made a sequel to this film is frightening.

As BK recommended once, do NOT watch the Ghibli Studios animated productions the way the Disney Studios release them in the States. They have wall-to-wall music and the dubbing is faulty...
Do watch them in Original Version with the English subtitles; they are masterpieces and the animation is far from cheap; they are done the "old fashioned way" with cells and painted backgrounds.

The stories are far from the old mold too, without the manichaeisms we're so accustomed to. "Good" characters are not totally good, and the "bad" ones are not entirely bad either.

I enjoy Spirited Away, Kiki's Delivery Service and Castle In The Sky as much as the Disney vintage masterpieces.

Last June I saw some of the original artwork from the Ghibli Studios productions on display in Paris and that was just out of this world!

Btw, does anyone know why Japanese animation uses a French term, Animé, to qualify that art?

That would translate into "Agitated" here!! LOL!

In today's local paper there's a long article on a French singer who's a total unknown here in France but a biggie in Japan.

Her name is Clémentine and I wondered if DR Hisaka has ever... heard her?

She tours Japan twice a year, produces 2 cds twice a year there and lives in Paris the rest of the time!

Finally, the return of both Francois and myself.

Jane, parking was hardly the problem with POP - the problem was that they let it go to seed, and with all those owners it's not surprising.

What a strange day.  I spent way too much time on the phone dealing with the problem I started dealing with yesterday - it finally got resolved at eleven this morning, although I'm going to double check at four, just to make certain that everyone did what they needed to do to resolve matters.

It's the second time this week when a mistake has been made, and sometimes the incompetence of businesses and government orginazations is just appalling.

The auction was a bit wacky.  I had two items I wanted to win, and I got one of them, although I had to pay more than the high end estimate, because all the costume sketches in this auction went crazy, mostly from sickening and idiotic dealers on the phone and the Internet.  While it's wonderful for the auction houses and consigners, this phone and Internet crap has taken all the fun out of auctions - there is no way to get a bargain anymore, what with these loonies who don't even know what an auction is, all jumping in and driving prices sky high.  It used to be that you attended an auction, you bid, and you either won or were outbid on the floor.  That was that.  Now any yokel can get in on the act from their own home or phone and it's just ridiculous.  But, I'm happy I won the main item and I still think I got a good deal since it's really two items I won.  What were they, you might be wondering, and I might tell you because why should I withhold such things from you?  They were two original Alvin Colt costume sketches (and gorgeous, detailed works of art they are) for the film of... Li'l Abner - Mammy Yokum's, and one of the Dogpatch wives' costumes from Put 'Em Back The Way They Wuz."  It went four hundred bucks over the estimate, but, as I said, was still not unreasonable.  Take away the phone and Internet wackos and I could have had it for half of what I got it for, because there was only one floor bidder besides myself, and he got out relatively early.

Francois: Do you have Ms. Upshaw's "I Wish It So" album? It is too too too diveen.

Yes, I do! I believe it's the first cd of hers I ever bought; I have a lot of hers, even the "serious" stuff! She sings with a smile in her voice; as BK said of Liz Callaway's pipes (And I'm quotting BK tonight, right?!) her voice makes me happy.

There's a moving documentary about Miss Upshaw called "The Voice of An Angel" when she was appearing in some Messian work some years ago. (I have to admit that Messian bores me).
She comes across as a vulnerable artist who doubts about her own talent, and is on the verge of tears because she can't get a certain gesture her character has to do.

I love her rendition of "What More Do I Need."
Title: Re:DAYS OF WANE AND ROSES
Post by: bk on July 29, 2005, 03:55:21 PM
The item I lost was Danny Kaye's The Black Fox cowl from The Court Jester.  The estimate was 300-500 bucks, but, again, the Internet and phone wackos (I was the ONLY floor bidder) drove the price up to a whopping 1800 bucks.  How stupid are these people.

Every single costume sketch went way over the estimate except two - which were strange anamolies - a Donna Reed costume sketch from The Far Horizons by Edith Head went for only 200 bucks (a steal), and the creme de la creme sketch, Travilla's original costume sketch for Monroe's Diamond Are A Girl's Best Friend, went for the low end of the estimate, with only two bidders.  Of course, the low end estimate was 8,000 bucks.  There were a whole series of costume sketches from The Ten Commandments, and every one of them tripled their estimates of 300-500 dollars.  Some did even better than that, so I guess I still got a relative bargain with my Li'l Abner paintings.  As soon as I have them I shall photograph them and share them with you.

Chuck and Julieanne Pogue made an album?  I must hear it.

We had our own Dance Ten Looks Three story here a few months ago:

"You're all staring at my this, aren't you?"

That reminds me of auditions the other night for "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change" - some woman came in and sang "Dance Ten, Looks Three" complete with the end of the monologue - Now remember the show she's auditioning for, not necessarily a "family" show... but she sang the song as "This and That" instead of the real lyric.  I found it amusing.

I thoroughly enjoyed VERONICA MARS. I don't usually have a lot of patience for teen-oriented shows since I lived through that angst-laden era once and don't usually enjoy it in fictionalized form, but the character is such an atypical teen that I really liked it, and I can see why the critics have been so high on the show. I will certainly continue watching the CBS shows, but doubt I will watch it on its regular network since I would have missed so much of the investigation into her ex- boy friend's sister's murder.

MONK also had a wonderful episode tonight that was certainly bittersweet, an emotion this show almost always handles to perfection. It was great seeing him fit into his little group and sad when he let them down and they deserted them. Sorry that Natalie messed up her chance at a hunky boy friend, too.

Back from another evening of social butterflying...

In fact, I joined the aforementioned DR Jason to celebrate the birthday of one his roommates.  We met at some place off of Union Square.  It was OK.  -The waiter seemed "mad" from the moment we sat down.  Ah, well...

We had a good time, but due to the mix of people and the physical layout of the tables, it was hard to converse with everyone.  However, DR Jason and I did end up with some unexpected entertainment, so to speak.  -I'll just say two words: Life Coach - and leave it at that.

;)

And DR Matt and Jane thank you for your guesses on my new avitar. But actually it was a lot more simpilar than that. I found a stock photo from photo program and added my name to it.

TOmorrow on (I think) HBO-HD will be the badly reviewed disaster movie THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW. I plan to record it too for later viewing. Since we were just talking about disaster movies the other day, it should be interesting to watch even if it did get awful reviews. If it's THAT bad, I can also turn it off and delete it from the DVR.

The simpliest solutions are often the best! Good job on it, BTW, Michael Shayne.

I went shopping at Costco tonight and saw Volume 1 & 2 of the Twilight Zone series. They were $50 cheaper than Best Buy. So I got them. Also Season 1 of 3rd Rock From the Sun. Now I know what my DVD will be playing this weekend. Watch the first three episodes of the series. They look wonderful as if they are being broadcast for the first time. There are so many I have heard about but never seen. Looking forward to them all

I didn't get to THE GREEN HORNET episode today, and another one gets recorded tomorrow, too.

Too much to see, too little time.

After dinner - and settling the check(!?!?!?!?) - DR Jason and I decided not to join the gang at The Coffee Shop Bar on the corner.  Instead, we took a nice stroll over to the Village where we eventually ended up at Magnolia Bakery.

:)

-And, surprise or surprises, I actually found the place on the first try!  I usually have to backtrack a few times on Bleecker in order to get there.  -That whole "West 4th St." is ever so confusing.  But we found it.  And we found the line.  Which was out the door, out onto the sidewalk and around the corner.

It was my first time going there at night.  I usually go during the day.  It's busy during the day, but not crazy busy - at least the last few times I went there.  However, the staff really keep the line moving, and there's even someone handing out plastic plates and pre-folded bakery boxes for your use.  I'd say we waited in line for 15 minutes tops.  Not bad at all.

I bought two cupcakes - one yellow cake/vanilla icing (yellow with sprinkles), one chocolate cake/vanilla icing (pink with sprinkles) - and a very generous slice of the Red Velvet Cake.

The cupcakes didn't even make it to Christopher Street.  Just sooooo good.  And lots of sugary icing too!  I just had a few bites of the Red Velvet Cake... Very good too!

-I'll let DR Jason describe his selection of treats when he gets home - which should be shortly.

Those are the two best seasons of TTZ. All the seasons had some memorable episodes, but Seasons 1 and 2 contain the greatest number of masterpiece episodes.

I'm not sure I ever saw a single episode of THIRD ROCK FROM THE SUN during all its years on the air.

Michael Shayne, let us know which episodes you like the best. Most people have seen some TZ, and I'm sure this will generate some lively discussion.

OH!  And the Yellow Cake Cupcake was surprisingly good.  Well, surprising to me since I usually get the chocolate ones - I think this was the first time I ever got the yellow cake. Once I bit into it, there was this wonderful waft of vanilla... Hmm...

I may have to go back... Tomorrow!

:)

... Of course, they are open until 12:30am tonight, so...

I do NOT need to be looking at cupcakes. I've been resisting baking a cake all week, but I think this weekend I will have to break down and actually bake one. If not a cake, at least some cupcakes.

Argh!

Well, I think the lateness of the hour and the visions of cupcakes dancing in my head are going to send me off to bed, hopefully to sleep and dream of chocolate.

Good night, all.

I'm also in the middle of Sue Grafton's last mystery novel R IS FOR RICHOCHET. Well, it's really a crime drama since no mystery is happening yet, and I'm more than halfway through the book.

Even without the whodunit aspect, I'm enjoying this one the most of any of hers since M IS FOR MALICE.
Last?  The latest (or newest) Grafton mystery novel is S is for Silence.

I should add that der B is the mystery lover in the family.  He adores Grafton's work.

I'm more into non-fiction, most of the time.   :-\

Jose: I love the name of your pic file for Suzanne's marquee. It sums it all up quite nicely.

Tonight was a lot of fun. As Jose recounted, he and I celebrated my roommate's birthday at the Heartland Brewery in Union Square and then after settling the check - which was somehow $50 short (!?!?!) - he and I headed off to Magnolia Bakery where I got 2 chocolate and 2 yellow cake cupcakes and a small cup of banana pudding, which was INCREDIBLE! I haven't tried the cupcakes yet - I don't know why! - but they look and smell amazing.

I felt sorry for poor DR Jose - he ended up walking around NYC with quite possibly the sweatiest human being on earth: me. I don't know what's wrong with me lately - I've been sweating profusely for the last couple of days. It's not even that hot outside! I guess I'm sweating out what's left of my cold...?

Anywho...it's late and I'm tired, so I'm gonna be a wussburger and go to bed. 'Night, all!!

Actually, it is quite a bit strange now that it is completed.  I just got so used to all the construction barriers set up - and having no real "circle" up there.  You don't have to walk on the ad hoc sidewalk on the southwest part of the circle anymore.  There's a real sidewalk there now.  -And, come to think of it, it was not completed yet when I was up here in March, so...

One "weird" thing about the fountain and the statue of Columbus is that is sort of dimly lit at night.  -I'm wondering if that is due to some residential zoning ordinance.  -Or maybe they're just not done lighting it yet.

Just getting around to reading the board today.  Strange day at the office.  We had to totally redo a project, and nobody was blaming anybody, but the person that everybody knew was at fault was the one complaining the loudest about staying late on a Friday to fix the mess.  Everyone kept asking him whether he had important plans, but he said no, he just wanted to get home because it was Friday night.   This never would have happened before the company switched to summer dress-down.  :)

Random thought re "On the Right Track" from PIPPIN, discussed way above:  Why does the proverbial everyone kvell over Sondheim rhyming "drank will" and "tranquil" in PACIFIC OVERTURES when several years earlier Schwartz had already rhymed "dank will" and "tranquil"?

And just to get to my 18th post, I'll post again.   Or as my parents would say, my CHAI post, in honor of all the $18 checks that Jewish parents have given all the years.

Shouldn't the CHAI amount be adjusted for inflation, though?

And now that I've reached 18 posting-wise, do i have the right to vote?
