The Man with the Bike, who complains about me to the landlord whenever I pass gas or do something to piss him off, leaves large amounts of trash in the hall regularly. His bike sat outside his apartment for a year or more. Last week, I got an email from the landlord about clearing out the hallway by July 26. His apartment door is behind that pile of books.

Slept very well.

Wisps of dreams fail to haunt my thoughts.

I have oceans to swim and mountains to climb, deserts to sweep and poems to rhyme.

That, or I simply need to roll up my sleeves and clean my house.

So it's a Monday, and I am about to pay a most unseemly property tax bill.

Okay, let's just call a spade a spade. The thing is ugly, no two ways about it. And that's it, plain and simple. It's a most unattractive property tax bill.

The Camelot original cast album was formative. With its thick gatefold cover printed with glossy gold and additional page insert. I’d listen and read the whole story and study everyone involved, thus certainly where I first saw the name Goddard Lieberson.

The Music Man
Mame
West Side Story

How my sister Annie would play that Mame album over and over… then there was a local stage production, and it might as well have been a Broadway show to us. We went in knowing all the songs.

Does anyone remember their FIRST studio cast album?

My family's first was a South Pacific that literally had to have been found for 49 cents in a grocery store. This was before we had a real cast album in the house. (We had records, but no shows then.) I was about ten years old, and I tried - oh, how I tried - to tell myself that it was delivering the magic of the show, but it was not for another year that we got the real thing in the gatefold jacket, and I thought I died and went to heaven.

Another year later, I bought my own first studio cast album:  the Nelson Eddy Oklahoma!, specifically because it included two songs I hadn't heard yet on a recording.

Finally, the Mel Tormé Porgy and Bess box set, which initially was a disappointment to little DR ChasSmith because he didn't know he wasn't getting the original score in that one. I learned to appreciate it later, and it's still here in beautiful condition. Mine even has the red handkerchief in the cover, which it seems has been lost from many copies over the years.

After those, who the hell knows, but that's my start in studio cast albums.

TOD:

Annie Get Your Gun with Doris Day & Robert Goulet
Showboat with Barbara Cook & John Raitt & (especially Anita Darian as Julie).  I later bought an LP by Anita Darian and it was glorious.
Oklahoma! with Florence Henderson & John Raitt & Phyllis Newman

And a few others - but these three are my favorite.

I paid the horrible taxes. I even had to "call downtown" when the website wouldn't complete anything. It was just heavy traffic, what with everyone (including moi) waiting till the last minute before they're due. All done now.

Then I laundered the old and put new things on the bed, which is never easy when you have a cat helper.

Now I'm laundering the rest of my sh stuff, and ketchuping here while eating three (count 'em!) eggs, toast (three again, but these are smaller than average slices), a fresh sliced tomato, and drinking some good strong coffee.

Good morning.  Welcome to the “paving of the parking lot” day.   All cars had to be moved by. 7:30am or they will be towed.  I parked mine like 5 miles way….   Anyway, no action at 7:30 - but we still have a U-Haul parked in the parking lot as well as a Nissan… but that will be towed.  I finally saw some orange vest action on the dog walk (about 10 minutes ago) - it’s suppose to be done by this evening.  Yeah - I don’t think so.  We aren’t able to drive our cars in and out of the garage while this is going on.   AND, the Gardners just pulled in with their truck.  I’m in no mood today to deal with this - especially if we are like this tomorrow as well.   If you’re going to make a plan, stick to it!

TOD - Technically, both the brown Jesus Christ Superstar and the white Evita albums are studio albums as they weren't connected to a show, yet came out before any production was mounted.  As for a studio cast album that came out AFTER the show was open, I think the first one I can remember is Oklahoma! with John Raitt and Florence Henderson.

Now is the season for Maryland Silver Queen corn.

Monday afternoon greetings!  Another sorting and shredding day.  I unearthed my initial Miami University appointment letter, dated 50 years ago TODAY.

Cue the “Twilight Zone” theme…

You should frame that!

It’s going into a scrapbook I’m working on that covers my life, birth to age 30 (when Richard and I were married).  It’s titled “Who We’re YOU?” because that’s what one of your high school classmates asked me at the 40th reunion.

Great title.

Except for the autocorrect!  Should read “Who Were YOU?”  Fixed my earlier post.

TOD 3:

The few I like least:

Swan Esther, a weird musical of the biblical book of Esther
Superhero (although Kate Baldwin is nice)
Goya
Something for the Boys (PS Classics)
Kiss Me, Kate (McGlinn version)
42nd Street (Yap)

I like the McGlinn Kiss Me Kate more than the TER recording; although the TER has the wonderful Diana Montague, whom I prefer over McGlinn's singer, it uses the published vocal score's laundered lyrics because the TER producere does shitty research.

  • Anyone Can Whistle (Yap, 23 years late)
  • Brigadoon (McGlinn)
  • Cinderella: Songs From The Classic Fairy Tale
  • Colette Collage - 1994 Studio Cast (I especially love the artwork ;) )
  • Dearest Enemy

When I moved to Sarasota, Fla., it was shortly after Paul Reubens was arrested in a porn theater. My friend Karen Dillon was the cop reporter who recognized the name on the arrest report. She was the one who, for better or worse, broke the story.

Hilarious story in the movie about how David Johansen didn’t get a role in the movie Hair because he failed a singing audition for Galt Macdermott.

Speaking of page eight, I've written eight pages so far. Will definitely do two more, but if I get on a roll, then maybe some beyond that.

End of the day recap:  Well, there was never any paving - just striping of the parking lot and adding a stop sign.... Of course, the stop sign is not needed, but I"m sure some homeowner had an issue and BOOM we have a sign.  I'm glad I rent - but I'm surrounded by homeowners associations.

First dress rehearsal with the band went OK.  I had to stop 3 times - and that's 3 times too many for me.  Gotta work some things out before tomorrow night.  That banjo part is a BEAR, and my guy is doing well, but sometimes not well enough.  We'll make it happen, I'm sure.

Tomorrow is another day
