Well, you've read the notes, the notes danced as fast as they could, and now it is time for you to post until the dancing cows come home.

Jrand, Miss Hayes is beautiful in Double Jeopardy and all the sneering, and there is a LOT of it, is done by Gale Robbins, who actually plays the Allison Hayes role.

Well, this is pretty interesting:
Kroger and Albertsons agree to sell 104 WA stores as part of merger (https://www.wenatcheeworld.com/business/kroger-and-albertsons-agree-to-sell-104-wa-stores-as-part-of-merger/article_4817b6fe-5055-11ee-9931-3b6ea9580096.html/)

Well, since I'm so close...

My 126000th post!! :D I'll stop here and say good night.
Have a good day, all!
-
Good morning, all!
-
I was up by 5:15 this morning. This is my day with Dr Egelman, cardiologist, to check my heart amd circulation with am echocardiogram, I understand the actual test will take about an hour. When I am home, I must call Lenox Hill Hospital immediately to let the know if I will be having the hip replacement tomorrow or not.
-
If the surgery is out, I will spend some time looking for a new, improved walker since I will be dependent on that.
-
Yesterday, I had a good time with Joshie at City Center. We've bee friends for around 16 years now, and he still amazes me. I thought I had good ears, but he was hearing things I completely missed in the original cast recording of Once Upon A Mattress, which was recorded by Kapp Records on what I think was a shoestring budget. If Goddard Lieberson had recorded it for Columbia, the sound would have been spectacular and we'd have far fewer questions about what was going on in the small orchestra of around 16-20 players.
-
I think the most fancy affair I ever attended was the 100th performance-Pulitzer win party at Steve Sondheim's home for Sunday in the Park with George, which was truly spectacular. I think the only thing missing was a band, but since I'm old and my memory is going, there might have been one. The second was the 2009 opening night party for the Broadway revival of Finian's Rainbow.
-
Good morning, all.
-
Congratulations, George, on your loftiness.
-
I remember going to the grand opening of the Armand Hammer exhibit at the University of Kentucky art museum. Gov. John Brown was there with Phyllis George. The Hammers were there. The art was there. The Hammers gave us a private tour. I remember falling in love with Corot’s trees.
-
I also remember having dinner at the governor’s mansion in Albany when Mario Cupmo was governor. It was an editors dinner. He was warm. But the dinner seemed interminable. And I had a 90-minute drive home afterward.
-
Time to stir.

Congratulations George on your lofty new plateau

I am perplexed.
Perplexed, I tell you.
I was up at 2:45 a.m., my sinuses dry as a bone, along with my throat.
I did a sinus rinse, which was an enormous relief. And then I did a breathing treatment with my nebulizer and that settled me, internally.
Back in bed by 3:15, I was finally able to get comfy. I slept well.
But those dreams!! Woof!!

Happily, the dream-inducing meds will come to an end at the finish of this week, so I have that to look forward to.

SAILING SINUSING VIBES~~~ for DR Ron Pulliam!!!!!!

Last night, I watched bits and pieces of the MGM Sigmund Romberg "bio-musical" "Deep in My Heart".
I say "bits and pieces" because I simply cannot just sit and watch this film any longer. Jose Ferrer is alternately wonderful and horrible. He has vast amounts of dialogue, which may or may not be as talky as Romberg, but such monologues just don't work any more (if, in fact, they did in the mid-1950s)
The numbers are very interesting, and a couple are dazzling. Dazzling is what they were going for. This movie was a dream project for associate producer/Freed Unit mastermind Roger Edens. He had Comden and Green to help with the screenplay.
"One Alone", danced by Cyd Charisse and James Mitchell, is too beautiful. "It", danced by Ann Miller, is amazing. Merle Oberon as Dorothy Donnelly is beyond glorious, but she does not sing. Helen Trauble is fun, too.
The most hideous scene in the film was intentional, but I doubt it was meant to be as hideous as it is. In fact, it seems to have been an afterthought, dropped in (possibly to give Ferrer a "big scene" for Oscar consideration). The play is "Jazzadoo" that Romberg is working on. What follows is one of the most egregiously excessive verbal and physical assaults upon the senses. Yes, "Romi" was meant to be embarrassing himself, but this scene kills the film for me.
The musical highlight for me is the finale...not all the yammer from Ferrer, but the conceit that he has just written a song that he is dedicating to his wife. He instructs his Carnegie Hall orchestra to pick up on it when they think they have it, and he begins playing and singing "When I Grow Too Old to Dream",
After the first verse, Ferrer gets up from the piano as the orchestra launches into a beautiful orchestration of the song (impossibly off-the cuff, of course), and then the studio choir (nowhere visible) takes up the song which becomes absolute tears-inducing perfection.
If only the entire movie had aspired to the heights of that finale!
-
My, this day is already flying by like a gazelle performing selected hits from Bajour.
-
Wouldn't that we something if Sigmund Freud had a musical?
-
I wonder if Lady in the Dark counts?
-
Another 1950s musical that missed the mark for me, despite some wonderful things, is "It's Always Fair Weather."
This one seems truly bloated, primarily because they were trying desperately to make an impact with CinemaScope and made all the sets oversized rather than filling the screen with people and cars, etc.
Still, it's an interesting story with an original score by Andre Previn. Two numbers stand out for me: "I Like Myself", with Kelly on roller skates and gorgeous musical orchestrations; and "Baby, You Knock Me Out", Cyd Charisse (dubbed) dancing with a bunch of boxing trainees in a gym. A truly wonderful number!!
There is a song called "The Time for Parting" that the three male leads sing at the point where they are returning to their homes after having served in WWII. It's serviceable, not memorable to me at all, and easily forgettable. EXCEPT...when they reunite in the same bar where they had sung the song the first time, someone takes up the song and the MGM Studio Choir launches it into a magnificent coda for the film.
I often wonder if the finales to these films were only orchestrated at the end of filming, and if whether the films, themselves, might have aspired to something better had the finale been filmed first.
-
I wonder if Lady in the Dark counts?
"Lady Be Good" may count, although it's not all Romberg in the film.
-

Fancy Do's?
I attended a swank fundraiser for the McDowell Colony. Can't remember the NYC venue. Jane Alexander was in attendance. At the time, she was the Chairperson of the National Endowment for the Arts. We had a brief conversation in the parking garage after the event.
The opening of a new theater at the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Saint Paul. That was a fancy-dress event. Never wear mauve at a Ball.
Standing next to Sondheim prior to the "Follies in Concert" at (the then) Avery Fisher Hall. We did not have a discussion.

From Vixmom:

The accent is a clue. If only you knew where it was from ;) ;D

I am home. The surgery will be postponed. Access-a-Ride was wonderful getting me there but so inept and shitty that I ended up taking a taxi home. Traffic was so bad in midtown it cost me $35.00. I am not amused, but I am home.
-
Like It’s Always Fair Weather, but agree that it’s not as good as it should have been. I like the chance to see Michael Kidd onscreen.

Hugs for Elmore.

From DR Vixmom:
I didn’t want those images seared in her little mind. We didn’t bring in any newspapers either.
One of her classmates was the granddaughter of the NYC Fire Department Battalion Chief in charge of Special Operations.
The street I live in was renamed in his honor, as was our post office, which act required an act of Congress.
Hillary Clinton and Chuck Schumer were here for the ceremony.
I remember the news telling people with children to turn off their tvs.
Wow, it must have been very emotional when you street and post office were renamed in his honor.

Life is too crazy at the moment, so I postponed tomorrow's hip replacement. My fears about my mortality were groundless; the cardiologist said I was fine ad called the EKG scare a machine error. I had a nice assistant who performed the ecocardiogram, which was essentially an ultrasound of my heart. It took about 20 minutes. Dr Egelman then talked to me about the results and we talked about my hip replacement. Between things like the AC issues in the apartment, the anxiety of a week thinking my heart was giving out, and my lack of information post-surgery, he thought postponing the surgery wasn't a bad idea but he strongly urged me to have it done soon.
-
As to Access-a-Ride, I got a text at 10:40 telling me my ride would arrive in 26 minutes. The text included a phone number for the driver. At 11:00 I took the elevator from the seventh floor and waited in the lobby. Around 11:10 I called AAR to inquire how soon the car would show up, but I got a message: Your call is very important to us so wait until the call is no longer important to you. I left a message like "what;s this goddamned voice mail> Where's my damned car?"
-
Larry: The sooner the better. Do they have a focus group of former hip replacement patients who might allay some of your fears?
-
TOD: My only truly formal do was in the Navy. I was resplendent in my Navy whites and in the change of a command of a NATO general or something. We were most impressive. And hot. And a bit sweaty.
There was no reception, no refreshment and no rest-of-the-day-off.
Phooey.
-
I called the main AAR number and got a nice lady who said the car would be thee in two minutes. I called the number I was given for the driver three times. Each time someone picked up the phone, said nothing, and put me on hold. At 11:30 I hailed a taxi and started home. At 11:40 the driver called to tell me he was waiting for me. I told him he was no longer necessary. At 11:45 AAR called me and wanted to know why I rejected the driver, and I told him the whole AAR saga, beginning with the 10:40 text. Traffic in midtown NYC is awful. It took us twelve minutes to get from Fifth Avenue and 47th Street to Sixth Avenue and 59th Street. Once we got to Broadway it was smooth sailing. Still, it cost me $32.00 more than AAR would have cost.
-
Larry: The sooner the better. Do they have a focus group of former hip replacement patients who might allay some of your fears?
Well, today's cardiologist was quite helpful.

-
DR elmore3003, sorry about the surgery, but glad about your good news.
-
DR Elmore, I am so glad to hear that report from the cardiologist. I didn't say this before, but I suspected that something like that could be the happy result, but I didn't want to jinx it and sure enough it is. :)
EKGs, like X-rays and other things, are subject to machine errors and to doctors' evaluations as well. In the case of the latter, second opinions should probably be de rigueur, though I say that as someone who hasn't yet gone that route on anything. Anyhoo, I had a routine EKG some fifteen years ago that caused the doc to say "I see one little [something], but no worries, that's common and you're fine. In fact, that was a pre-surgery check, so it really was fine. And earlier this year I had one, also just a routine check, and that doctor said "the EKG looks great!". So I am happy and relieved to hear that you do indeed have the go-ahead on that.
BUT...like the doctor and DR Ron Pulliam and others say, do plan on it sooner rather than later. My particular reason for saying that is that one of my favorite relatives (well, one of my two favorites, and we lost BOTH within the past year) was in dire need of a hip replacement, but she allowed her *ungrounded* fears of the surgery to justify her refusal to have it, and her physical comfort and mobility so badly deteriorated over the next few years that I believe that's what helped finish her off in her early 80s, when she had been assured by all of her doctors all along that she was an excellent candidate for it. I don't want to see that happen to anyone else.
-
Congratulations, George, on your loftiness.

Rehearsal is not till seven, so that's good.
Tonight will be my first rehearsal with the "Glee Club" in The Hotel Olympian Gala Extravaganza.

It's supposed to start at 5:15 at someone's house (I have the address), but the rehearsal for the show proper is at 6:00.

Oh, look! It's Page Four!

I can only assume that we'll get out of glee club rehearsal with enough time to get to the show rehearsal.

I am very sorry your aunt didn't have the surgery that would likely have given her a better quality of life.

Do you have to go far to get to the reshearsal?
-
DR George can you be late to the rehearsal?
-
I spoke to Joshie, who's very happy I postponed since he's worried about our finishing up Once Upon A Mattress on time. Then I sent Dr Kassipidis' surgery scheduler an email asking if I might book the last week of December or the first week of January for the surgery. Now I wait.

The definition of revert is "return to (a previous state, practice, topic, etc.)."
Can someone please tell me why it is now common for reporters/writers to say revert back instead of simply saying revert?

I don't think it'll be a problem. The "glee club" only sings one song, and it's only two pages long, so it shouldn't take very long at all to go through it.
-

Whatever the reason, it's probably the same as why some people now say "based off of" (which makes no sense) instead of "based on," which is grammatically correct.
-
Or "on set" instead of "on the set." ::)
-
Two of those things I can't stand:
"Based off" instead of "based on", and "based out of" instead of "based in".
I originally would hear the latter from salespeople in the industry I worked in. "My company is based out of Denver." No sir, actually, it's based IN Denver. You're welcome.
-
Kudos to DR George on 126,000 posts and counting!

At lunch, Josh and DR Elmore were talking a little bit about Mattress and I innocently asked why there was so much mystery surrounding the orchestration, whereupon Josh launched into a list of reasons and things to consider that was fairly mindboggling. I would of course have expected that from the DR, so it was fascinating to hear that kind of discussion from the adopted son.

Consider the use of "new record", as in "he set a new record." Since setting an "old record" isn't possible (although matching an existing record is), a "record" is a "record".

LOL Ron.

I went to a new Jersey Mike’s for a quick dinner. Never again. Overpriced and underwhelming. Plus the amount of mayo would have made BK vomit on the ground.

I just learned that the Giant Supermarket stores have a giant robot named Marty.

That’s scary looking.

Vacation starts tomorrow.

His job is to roam the aisles looking for spills, out-of-stock items, and other simple scanning tasks.

So, I guess it starts tonight.

One day Marty escaped and made it as far as the parking lot ;D

Here is a video of Marty.

Of course the news had a lot of fun with this story.
-
"Robot on the run! "Marty" makes daring escape from Giant Food Store"
-
The big question seems to be is Marty Cool or Creepy ;D
-
Has anyone seen Marty in person?

That is hilarious.

I thought so :)

That's too bad. I'll admit that it is a little pricey, but I like Jersey Mike's. :-\

It isn't my go-to sub place though. It's way out in Lacey, so that's a bit of a hindrance.

-
But if it's too pricey, you won't care if they can hold the mayo. ;)
-
One day Marty escaped and made it as far as the parking lot ;D
:o
-
Here is a video of Marty.

Has anyone seen Marty in person?
Not I.
-
Back from a good rehearsal.
-
Doug sat in and I think he was very pleased.

The bread was dreadful, soft and characterless. The meat was characterless. Ditto the cheese. I could taste the sweet pickles, the jalapeńos, the hot pepper spread and the mayo more than anything.

Oh, my.

Good night, all.

Oh me, oh mayo!

We had company recently and I think it was the first time I in my life I purchased mayonnaise.

Here i stand at a crossroads.
-
Push ahead to the next page, knowing that it is only the much-maligned page 7?
-
Or stay safely here where the page number is low but the vibes are good?
-
I have zero guests to guide me.
-
Tonight we went as a family to a cineplex to view a film called Barbie.
-
The film really captured something in the cultural zeitgeist of Summer 2023. I found it a bit scattershot. A mix of heavy handed and featherweight. I don’t feel strongly about it one way or another. Glad we went. The kids enjoyed it.
-
Some nice choreography for sure.

This post is in honor of Lyle Talbot.

This post is in honor of Martin Balsam.

And here we are on Level 7!
-
I do not care for page seven.
-
Page seven is anathema to me.
-
Anathema is page seven to me.
-
Regis Toomey is to me.
-
Toomey or not Toomey, that is the question.
-
What can I talk about to get us to an 8th page?
-
How about a random list of famous folks, whoever comes to mind…

Hello, Rodzinski.

I'm still enjoying the Coffee Crisps! ;D
-
George here to bail me out.
-
So glad you are digging those Crisps.

My dad had a 2-record Judy Collins set. There was a period of time where he’d come home from a hard day at the office, put on that album and when “Send in the Clowns” came on, he’d just close his eyes and be transported far away.

Nice. I've actually seen her in concert three times here in Olympia! And she sang "Send in the Clowns" all three times.
-
It was something to behold, the power of music.
-
So, Stage Door Records (http://www.stagedoorrecords.com/) just released the 1959 studio cast recording of Gigi (http://www.stagedoorrecords.com/stageod007.html).

I totally forgot that I had actually ordered it!
-
AND it arrived today!
-
Unlike most of their releases, this was limited to only 100 copies.
-
And it's a CD-R, not a pressed CD.
-
Which should be fine...I don't think I've ever had a problem with one.
-
Well, not yet, anyway. ::)
