Well, you've read the notes, the notes championed Gower, and now it is time for you to post until the champion cows come home - they're currently doing a production of I Moo! I Moo!
-
And the word of the day is: BADINAGE!
-
Good morning, all!
-
There is definitely a hint of autumn in the air. After coming down from her bookcase aerie, Annabelle couldn't wait to crawl under the blankets to warm up. Iwould have been happy aswell with another blanket, but I'll wait. I know it's going to get warmer very soon.
-
Good morning, friends.
-
Great photo, DR George. Glad the show went well.

~~~CONTINUED MODERN MAJOR MIRACLE VIBES~~~ for the likes of BK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
When Carol Channing's 1977 tour of Hello, Dolly! played Cincinnati, I ushered for all the evening performances. I had seen Mary Martin in the first national tour when it played Cincinnati and loved it. In 1966, on my first trip to New York, I saw Ginger Rogers in the role, and she was a real letdown after seeing Martin. Channing was wonderful, as BK stated, and I even enjoyed her 1997 revival. I wanted to see Midler and didn't, but I did see Peters, who botched because she backphrased nearly everything she sang.
-
Today, I want to pull out my Oklahoma! score and listen to the new recording. I also must listen to the OBC of Once Upon a Mattress and mark up my vocal score.
-
I believe John Wilson has said his recording of "Oklahoma!" is intended to be faithful in all respects to the original.
-
George: GREAT photo of you in a tux.
-
Jackl You may be correct about that weird dream I had during yesterday's nap.
Not having any siblings, and not having been involved in sibling relationships that were difficult, I cannot say. I have seen "East of Eden" and wonder if that brotherly to-do could have any input. Haven't watched it in years, though.
If something is going to be resolved this weekend that may be related to it, I have no hopes of liking it.
Happy Saturday morning, all.
Yes, Jane...I did manage to sleep...a bit. I was awake every hour on the hour, of course, but I did sleep and I know this because of the danged dreams.
I recently had a phone conversation with my former boss, and he told me our office building was all but dark post-pandemic. We had occupied four floors, but now the GSA maintains offices on two floors, most of which go unused.
Working from home was always the goal pre-pandemic, but no one ever had the nerve to allow our folk to try it. Yes, some did on odd days, but most had a presence in the office. Now, all my former co-workers (who have not retired) are working from home.
My dreams last night were a bit fascinating, because they combined my Navy service with my County service. I found myself on a visit to Oakland and had been invited to explore the darken labyrinths of the office building. While there, I caught the attention of the "acting" director of the agency who had been the financial officer when I was working.
Kimberly (her name) asked a favor: If I was going to be in town for a week or two, would I consider helping them get the old shop back in order? Well, how flattering. But instead of it being a real estate office, it was a variation of a print shop and broadcasting facility (my Navy Public Affairs work, partially).
I told her I would be glad to help and she sent me to a different building to "sign on", as it were. I stopped at my hotel and realized I only had the one set of civilian clothes I was wearing and one set of dress whites which i had hoped to wear at the conference I had come to Oakland to attend. (No, the conference was not a military one, but it was about a story I had written, infamously, while in the military and I was asked to come speak about it).
I found myself face-to-face with familiar people in the other building, all of whom questioning why I would even consider working a week again. I shrugged and said I had always enjoyed my work and since retiring, I had the time to do what I enjoy.
I returned to the office building where I realized I had no access. There was a guard, and there were names on a list of people expected to be admitted, by my name wasn't there. I asked if I could use a phone to call the office I wanted to visit and see if someone would come down, but the guard said I was not allowed to use the phone.
A Catholic priest approached and said he knew me and would escort me. I don't know from Catholic priests, but he could have been one...or could have played one in a movie or TV show.
I was escorted to an office where forms were filled out to get me a badge I could use at the main entrance. Oddly, the person handling those forms was the same guard who had refused me entrance.
Someone else I knew walked by and expressed surprise and pleasure at seeing me. Will you be working here again? I said for a short while. How long? I don't know, I said. Maybe a week, ten days. or however long they need me.
The Catholic priest looked at me for moment and then asked what I would be doing and who had asked me back. When I told him, he said, "I have to go speak with Margo."
I asked who the priest was, and I was told he was the person I had just been hired to direct.
Oh, well. I don't know who Margo is or was.
I wonder if, when all the meds have been taken, I will no longer have strange dreams.
I truly do not like them. When I awaken, I tell myself to think of something else and dream something else. But, no....
Before, I could barely remember an interesting dream long enough to tell myself to keep dreaming it.
-
It is time for coffee and something yummy. I bought two pistachio-flavored muffins at The Fresh Market, but I also bought two onion rolls.
Which will win out, I wonder?
-
I want to hear more about the "infamous story."
Modern Major Miracle VIBES for MR BK.
-
Good morning, all.
-
Well I’ll be damned. (Yes, I really will.) It feels like a Saturday, and by God it is a Saturday.
-
Now, if only I had something to say for myself. Other than being damned, that is.
Break a leg vibes for DR GEORGE & Co.
I enjoyed the pictures of the venue and DR GEORGE in his tuxedo....I like the waiter's jacket.....but I also like the Eton jacket which is the same length but has three buttons in front.
-
Everything’s still green, but boy does it feel like early fall.
-
Oh my what wonderful notes!!!
TOD -
Gower CHAMPION - Hello, Dolly & 42nd Street
Bob Fosse - Pajama Game & Pippin
Michael Bennett - Promises, Promises & A Chorus Line
Jerome Robbins - West Side Story & Fiddler On The Roof
-
I get so frustrated with local community theeders that decide that the best choreographers are local kids dance teachers.
So what you get is exactly what MR BK wrote about - steps completely unrelated to story or lyrics and sometimes even music.
I knew we were in trouble a few years ago when I saw the "Tradition" line dances in The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
Telling a story and BUILDING a song in dance is crucial....I am almost tempted to put forward my name to choreograph OKLAHOMA! next season - but at least one of the folks who is interested in directing the show is....a local kids dance teacher.....who put "Tradition" in HUNCHBACK.....and if the music repeats, so do the steps.
-
Getting down off my soap box.
-
For now.
-
Last night we went to Buffalo Wild Wings and had a good time....they were only serving sides and appetizers by the time we got there, but that was fine.
There were 14 of us. And we finally met the husband of the new young actress who joined us.....he is a very friendly young man and does something with the State Department.....
-
The U.S. State Department.
-
He is coming to the show tonight with his parents.
-
And with Page Two, I am hoping we have a more populous audience this evening.
The number of folks attending night one and two....added together equal one full house.
-
Population of the populace vibes for DR Jrand73 & Company.
-
Wow, that dream was pretty specific, DR Ron Pulliam.
-
But then, the Devil is in the details.
-
Or so they say.
-
There'll be a hot time in the old town tonight.
-
Or so they say.
-
"They" say a lot of things.
-
My Dollys: Ginger Rogers on Broadway, Channing on tour in Miami a year or so later, and then none until Bernadette in 2018. Time to seek out some bootlegs. I so wish I could have seen Betty Buckley’s.
-
Or so they say.
-
Corn.
-
Lemon crinkle cookies with raspberry curd.
-
Good morning, all.
-
Saw Channing twice on tour in Dolly. Indelible performance.
-
TOD:
Robbins: Gypsy, On the Town
Champion: Carnival, 42nd Street
Tommy Tune: Whorehouse, Nine
Bennett: A Chorus Line, Seesaw
Fosse: Chicago, Sweet Charity
Great photo, DR George. Glad the show went well.
I want to hear more about the "infamous story."
I was curious about that, as well, since I had no memory of writing it.
But, I was able to scan parts of the story. The infamy part was that I stated that I had seen something in the skies one night.
I described it as I saw it.
I drew no conclusions as to what it was.
I observed phenomena occurring around me.
It was quite a piece and folks were out to ridicule me, but I had, as my defense, never once stated what it "might" have been or where it "might" have come from.
The story was a mood piece, extolling upon the mind's ability to transcend what it thinks it knows and to "imagine" what it cannot put into fact.
Regarding the Chandos recording by John Wilson of the complete original "Oklahoma!:
Its a pricey box ($43), but this morning I got a text telling me Amazon was reimbursing me $11.12 on the final price. It may be because I am a Prime customer, but there it is.
-
Wow, that dream was pretty specific, DR Ron Pulliam.
I consider it a near-lucid dream. I was awake every hour of the night, counting down the hours until I could reasonably get up and take more meds.
-
Have never seen a stage production of the show. If I had my druthers, I'd love to see both the Martha Raye production and the Pearl Bailey one.
I got the exact same message! :D
I, too, am a Prime customer, but the I have always assumed ::) that that kind of pre-order/final price refund would happen to anyone.
Ditto!
I just listened to the new Oklahoma! and sent John an email praising it. It's quite excellent, and I put it up there with McGlinn's Show Boat for excellence. By the time Curley and Laurie got to their Act Two reprise of "People Will Say We're in Love" ("Who cares what happens now?"), I was in tears. People are already carping about it on Facebook, but they're wrong.
From DR Ron:
I did, but I always was glad I didn't. It would have been hell on them with my dad's drinking, and my mom likely wouldn't have been able to keep us all in line.
That is an interesting perspective. I found at times it helped to have siblings while dealing with my mother, but then my sister always made it worse by causing more trauma in the house.
-
DR Singdaw no Band-Aid is fine if you don't bleed at all ;D
-
DR George that is a very nice photo of you.
-
Bruce I do hope you did not take home whatever has been biting you.
BITES & BITERS BEGONE VIBES FOR BRUCE!
DR George that is a very nice photo of you.
Thanks, Jane!
-
You are welcome.
-
Do biters drink bitters?
-
That's what I'd like to know.
-
This is amazing -- it's no more than 70 degrees here, and we've got a nice constant breeze thanks to the hurricane that went to the east of us, and the house is airing out nicely. Truly a fall day.
-
Lovely.
It may be too early to be certain, but my senses of smell and taste deserted me more than a year ago.
Today, however, I discovered it is time to clean out my refrigerator. Something has soured.
I'm sure that soon it will be airing on the Criterion Channel. :)
I had a rather interesting phone call this afternoon.
Five years ago, my cousin Richard gave me a sheet of paper with an inquiry from someone possibly in our family who was seeking information about one of our fathers' half-brothers. He asked if I knew enough to answer the question, so I told him I'd look into it.
Six months ago, I began seriously looking into my roots on Ancestry.com and much has been revealed. Not enough, no, but quite a bit. At that time, I e-mailed this person to let him know I was active on Ancestry at this time and would help if I could.
He called me today, after having not checked his account at Ancestry since i had sent my offer.
We talked for about an hour. My father was the youngest of eight brothers and sisters. BUT...his father, my grandfather, had been married previously and had three or five children (not sure at this point) with his first wife. One of those children was a girl who was part of my grandfather's household while he was married to my grandmother (his first wife died). His sons were all older than MY aunts and uncles, so they didn't really live in the home with them.
This guy has had quite a life. He has a home in Charlotte NC and in SC, as well. He started a department store business in his younger years and is comfortable. He wanted to know about my half-cousin Winston Pulliam. Winston was in real estate in Biltmore NC (a wealthy adjacent to Asheville NC). Winston was the son of one of my father's half-brothers...Ed. Also in Biltmore lived my Uncle George and Aunt Belle, both of whom I loved dearly, and so did Winston who treated them like his own parents.
This guy, whose first name I do not remember, is a bastard son of Ed, Winston's father. He is seeking as much info as he can find on his dad's side of the family. I have told him he definitely can PROVE relationship via his DNA which he can provide Ancestry.com, so that may help him out.
We will likely talk again...and meet up at some point the future.
-
FWIW: I met Ed only once. He came to our house in Greenville, asked me if I was LeRoy's boy and then told me he was my uncle.
I called my father to the door and said my Uncle Ed wanted to see him. I had never seen a look of disgust as deep as the one on my father's face at that time. He told me I didn't have an Uncle Ed and sent me to my room.
Later, he told me who Ed was and that I was never to open the door to him again.
Interesting story DR RON PULLIAM.
Since you can't call him Uncle Ed maybe you should call him Mr. Ed.
And now I shall be off to the theeder.....we shall be finished about the time that DR GEORGE starts.
-
The most interesting fact - to me - about playwright Paul Osborn, and Indiana native.....is that when he was working with Elia Kazan writing the screen play for EAST OF EDEN....he also happened to know a young New York actor....
He introduced the young actor - also a Hoosier - to Kazan....James Dean.
Or maybe I wrote about this last week here.
Something's happening, Dave......I can feel it......wait a minute.....wait a minute.....
DR Ron your family history is very interesting.
-
DR Ron your family history is very interesting.
It's boggling my imagination at times.
One of my aunts did some research on the original Pulliams who emigrated from England. She stopped researching when she discovered one had been hanged for horse theft.
-
Before my mother died, she confessed something to me she had known about for more than 50 years. Her father told her he had an out-of-wedlock daughter somewhere.
My mother never found out who or where and never wanted to. After her death, my Aunt Doris (her legitimate sister) asked if I had heard of this and expressed interest in finding her half sister.
I expect some of the cousins that turn up on my ancestry site may be related to this third sister, but I have no way of knowing at this time.
-
Paul Osborn also wrote one of my favorite plays, On Borrowed Time. Aunt Demetria is a pismire!
-
Last night, now that my new fire stick is running smoothly, we watched Red White and Royal Blue. I enjoyed it.
Good Afternoon - almost evening. Today, has been productive. I cleaned the bathroom/shower, played and sung a funeral and now I'm home with the boys. I have a small rib-eye steak marinating in some olive oil, salt and pepper and garlic powder. It will go on the grill in a little while.
-
I saw the Dolly tour in 1995. First time I'd seen the show - of course I knew the music by then, but it was the first production I saw. in 1997, I played for a production with Sharon McNight as Dolly - I have some good memories and some nightmare-ish memories. My mom was her dresser. She wasn't bad, but then there Sharon.... And that's all I'm saying about THAT!
-
Back from run-through - ours went well if only one of our actresses would get her lines learned. Came in late, uses her phone with the lines and kind of makes it difficult for the other actors.
-
Groan. Vibes she gets her act together.
A young woman rang my doorbell shortly after 6 p.m. She represented the power company which is trying to get folks to install solar panels...no up-front expenses, but all unused power goes into the grid.
I really would like to speak to someone who knows enough about this to allow me to make a good decision.
-
A good decision would be a good thing.
-
Tonight, we started The Sound of Music, which I'm not sure I have ever seen all the way through.
-
Shocking, I know.
-
We made it as far as "Intermission."
-
The rest will have to wait for another night.
Good night, friends.
-
Good night, all.
-
Boom ditty boom
I think this is my favorite song from the show! ;D
-
We had a good show and a good audience!
-
And other than a couple of moments where the singers and the band couldn't hear each other, all the songs went off like gangbusters, even the ballads.
-
And Robin, the daughter of my friend Misi (yes that how she spells her name), was there and we got to ketchup, so that was really nice.
-
Also, a former co-worker was there working the organization side of the show because his wife is in the group, so it was nice to see him, too.
-
They actually have tickets for tomorrow's matinee, so he'll get to see the show, not just hear it from the hall.
-
After the show, I hied myself to Red Robin with my Kindle and my gift certificate, and enjoyed one of their Cheesy Bacon Fondue Burgers (again ;) ), and other than it and the Cheesy Bacon Fondue not being quite hot enough (but just warm enough), it was all quite tasty.
-
So in the show, I'm part of the Chamber of Commerce Glee Club, the song that we sing is "Look for the Silver Lining" by Jerome Kern and Buddy DeSylva.
-
However, we don't do the intro:
As I wash my dishes, I'll be following a plan
-
Til I see the brightness in every pot and pan
-
I am sure this point of view will ease the daily grind
-
So I'll keep repeating in my mind:
-
We just start with the verse and go to the end:
-
Look for the silver lining
-
Whene'er a cloud appears in the blue
-
Remember, somewhere the sun is shining
-
And so the right thing to do is make it shine for you
-
A heart, full of joy and gladness
-
Will always banish sadness and strife
-
So always look for the silver lining
-
And try to find the sunny side of life
-
And then we repeat the song.
-
:)
PAGE SEVEN DANCE!!
-
The last song in the show is "By the Light of the Silvery Moon."
-
And we sing that whole song with four soloists.
-
CHORUS(all):
By the light of the silvery moon
-
I want to spoon
-
To my honey, I'll croon love's tune
-
Honey moon, keep a-shinin' in June
-
Your silvery beams will bring love's dreams
-
We'll be cuddlin' soon
-
By the silvery moon
-
GEORGE (the character, not me) and MANDY:
Place, park, scene, dark
Silvery moon is shining through the trees
-
MARTIN and JOSEPHINE:
Cast, two, me, you
Summer kisses floating on the breeze
-
GEORGE and MANDY:
Act one, be done
Dialog, where would ya like to spoon?
-
MARTIN and JOSEPHINE:
My cue, with you
Underneath the silvery moon
-
CHORUS (all):
By the light of the silvery moon
-
I wanna spoon
-
To my honey, I'll croon love's tune
-
Honey moon, keep a-shinin' in June
-
Your silvery beams will bring love's dreams
-
We'll be cuddlin' soon
-
By the silvery moon
-
Gratuitous Post #201!! ;)
-
GEORGE and MANDY:
Act two, Scene new
Roses blooming all around the place
-
MARTIN and JOSEPHINE:
Cast three, You me
Preacher with a solemn-looking face
-
GEORGE and MANDY:
Choir sings, bell rings
Preacher, you are wed forever more
-
MARTIN and JOSEPHINE:
Act two, all though
Every night the same encore
-
CHORUS (all)
By the light (not the dark but the light)
-
Of the silvery moon (not the sun but the moon)
-
I wanna spoon (not croon, but spoon)
-
To my honey, I'll croon love's tune
-
PAGE EIGHT DANCE!! ;D
-
Honeymoon (honeymoon, honeymoon)
-
I do not care for page seven.
-
Keep a-shinin' in June
-
Your silvery beams will bring love's dreams
-
So, good thing we're on page eight.
-
We'll be cuddlin' soon
-
I care for page eight.
-
By the silvery moon!
-
But not for page seven.
-
And BOWS!!
-
:D
-
New notes are up.
-
Up are new notes.
-
I've seen them.
-
I've read them.
-
I care for page eight.
'Cause eight is great!
-
I wrote them.
-
There is no page seven in the notes.
-
And that's a good thing.
-
Why?
-
Because I do not care for page seven.
