Well, you've read the notes, the notes opened, and now it is time for you to post until the garage cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: USUFRUCT!
-
Good morning, all!
-
I, too, wished former DR PennyO a happy birthday on Facebook/
-
I slept well. I had a very strange dream that I was supervising a crew restoring an old house. There was a vampire in the basement and some other ghoulish figure I cannot remember moving about the house. It was all rather silly and macabre rather than being a terrifying nightmare.
-
This morning I am meeting my ballet colleague Doug, who's in town from Seattle this week, for breakfast. He was a guest lecturer last night at the Lincoln Center Performing Arts Library.
-
This new computer is being very wonky this morning.
-
Good morning, friends.
-
I am working all day today.
-
'Tis that time of year!

Good morning, all.

Had a decent sleep, but still woke up way too early.

We might be getting a Christmas tree this afternoon. We’ll have to clear a place for it, which will be a bit of a challenge. But it won’t be a huge one this time.
-
The Holdovers yesterday was rather incredible. A real movie, about people? Made for adults? What is this world coming to?

I am very curious about this. I know I won't see it beofre it's on DVD.

A gracious good Saturday morning to all of you.
The sky is rather gloomy, but we have been awaiting major rain storms for two days and, thus far, nothng has happened. Last night, one of the weather guessers suggested we might miss out altogether despite prognostications from three major weather services.
That reminds me of snow predictions when I was in high school. If they ever predicted snow, we never got it.
-
I am sleeping extraordinarily well these days.
Yesterday was my first "fully functional" day of the week since my colonoscopy. The drugs they used had a lingering after-effect that made me feel a bit out of sorts. It did pass, however.
It has been a most strange and unusual week in that, until this morning, I seemed to be a day behind whatever day it actually was. I blame the colonoscopy for that. I do. It is so convenient to do so.
Don't try to talk me out of it.

I need to tackle Christmas cards this weekend.
I generally prefer having them in the mail by December 1st, but this year just doesn't feel "Christmassy" enough to bother.
Things certainly look like Christmas around these parts. Folks seem to enjoy decorating.
I used to, but that impulse has abandoned me the past couple of Christmases. I don't know if it's my age or the loss of very close relatives who won't be here to share it.
I suspect the latter.
-
Good morning, all.
-
Too busy day ahead.
-
Got a funeral this morning, too many hours of dancing tonight.
-
I like non-carby breakfast foods. No toast, no potatoes, and only seldom a pancake.
-
Instead, give me eggs most any way, meat, fruit.
-
Unlike former DR Ben, I am not one for oatmeal.
-
And the word of the day is: USUFRUCT!
Watch your phraseology!

I want to see this, too, but I might not wait.

I shall shortly be on my way to breakfast.

Old-fashioned, toe-tapping Christmas in Garden’s ‘Moonshine & Mistletoe’ | Review
Matthew J. Palm December 1, 2023 at 5:01 a.m.
There’s an old song by country group Alabama that urges “Oh, play me some mountain music, like grandma and grandpa used to play...” It was running through my mind as I walked out of “Moonshine & Mistletoe,” a toe-tapping country-folk-bluegrass Christmas musical making its world premiere at Garden Theatre in Winter Garden.
Set in Appalachia, “Moonshine & Mistletoe” is full of mountain music — in this case merry mountain music — of the best kind. The actors play multiple instruments to accompany themselves and each other, from squeezebox to all sorts of strings to the spoons. These are the old hymns: “People Look East,” “I Wonder as I Wander,” “Brethren, We Have Met to Worship.”
Add to them a healthy dollop of traditional secular and comic folk tunes: “Good Old Mountain Dew,” “I Wish I Was Single Again.”
As arranged by Larry Moore and under the music direction of David M. Lutken, they are all a joy to hear.
And speaking of joy, how refreshing it is to see a show that treats faith as a source of joy and comfort — as it is for so many — instead of something to be mocked.
The faith comes through in the music, rather than the DJ Salisbury’s wisp of a story line. It’s actually a full half hour in before you start getting a whiff of a plot.
It’s 1937, during the Great Depression — though no one looks the worse for wear or seems too concerned about it — and, as families do, this particular clan in the coal-mining town of Ruby Hollow is gathering for Christmas. There’s a new minister in town — he’s single! — and daughter Dovey, almost an old maid at age 24, has her eye on him. Aunt Mamie is still mourning the death of her husband in a mine accident. And then a surprise guest: son Dewey Joe, who left town two years ago and has been AWOL ever since, returns with a pregnant wife. And mama Curleen may never forgive him for leaving.
There’s a lot to work with here, and feelings that would resonate with a modern audience. But Salisbury, who also directs this production, doesn’t dig deep enough to get a handle on any of the characters. Even Dewey Joe seems puzzled by his lack of motivation, admitting he has no reason for having failed to write his family, of whom he apparently is quite fond.
There’s not really depth to anybody — we know nothing about their hopes and dreams, except Dewey Joe didn’t want to be a miner — so the emotional stakes are muted. And the climaxes of the various plot threads are, well, so anti-climactic that they rob the audience of satisfying catharsis.
And yet, the music is so wonderful and the cast so appealing and the whole concept so beautifully simple, that the plot/character shortcomings melt away like springtime snow.
It helps, too, that in this staging by Victory Productions and Jessica Huckabey Theatricals, Duane Harvey’s evocative set of wooden slats and big brick chimney even includes a kitchen where we can hear mama rattling pots and pans — the audio background to any family gathering.
The cast is uniformly strong, though David Finch is a scene stealer as rascally moonshine-making neighbor Wilmer. Kelan M. Smith plays a differently abled young man with sweet sensitivity, and his a cappella “I Wonder As I Wonder,” backed by harmonic oohs and ahs from cast mates is the show’s musical highlight.
Amanda Hudson Giese is the perfect mix of jolly and poignant as Aunt Mamie. Allison Ann Kelly sparkles as young mom Della, and has lovely chemistry with John Rochette as her good-natured miner husband.
As estranged mother and son, Maggie Hollinbeck is appropriately terse and Julian James appropriately earnest; if only the script gave them more layers to explore.
Christmas is a time for nostalgia, family and maybe in our complicated world,
a time for simplicity as well. With joy and heart in every ringing note, “Moonshine & Mistletoe” is a welcome breath of fresh holiday air.

Saturday afternoon greetings! We’re expecting a visit this afternoon from our “ambassador,” a resident mentor. When my mother-in-law moved to this common 1999 her ambassador was my former boss Mrs. Brown.

Nice review, DR Elmore!

Excellent review, DR Elmore. Congratulations!!

From Vixmom:
Yep! Now our governor must set a date for a special election. Hoping people step up and put a Democrat in that seat
MEGA VIBES SOMEONE GOOD REPLACES HIM!

From DR George:
Enjoy your popcorn, Jane, and Congrats on YOUR posting millstone!!
Thank you, I did. Thank you for capturing my millstone. I had no clue.
-
Thank you DR Vixmom.
-
Thank you DR Singdaw.
-
Thank you DR John.

DR Vixmom I hope you are taking it easy this weekend.

I think you should find out exactly what they used for future information. Maybe then an adjustment can be made to avoid this happening again. I take a day to get them out of my system while Keith is fine within hours. Three days seems excessive to me.

Unlike former DR Ben, I am not one for oatmeal.
LOL. I like it cooked with dried cherries as a sweetener. I also use milk vs water.
-
This morning I had Cream of Wheat vs my usual yohurt & blueberries or occasional oatmeal.

God Morning. White Christmas is officially open!! Fantastic opening night. It was the first time I actually had fun and just threw caution to the wind and did the part and had fun. My sister was in attendance and she said I was "adorable". An older lady who assitant-directed Bright Star this last summer greeted me with "What depth!!" - and that was enough for me! We have the rest of this weekend and the next 2 weekends - the run is almost sold out (150 seat theatre). Now, it's on to the real job - kids Christmas program and finalizing music for Christmas eve/day and writing some arrangements. But what a great way to start December! Oh, and I have a cold. LOL

Great review, Larry. I quibble only with the lede. One should not leave a musical humming a song not in the show. Still, it’s a minor comment given how nice the rest of the piece is.

Show vibes for MR BK.

Congrats to DR MATTHEW on his opening!

yes, DR singdaw, I did indeed film today.
Nicole Etcheson's A Generation At War: The Civil War in a Northern Community is a good book if you are interested in the subject....a bit scholarly but a lot of good information.
I started out as Person Number 2......but by the time we were done, I had two lines and some business.
Lots of nice photos - I'll find a better one later.....but for now here is Teej Tincher as A.C. Atcheson and me as the president of the convention.....

I think he's too harsh about DJ's script, but the book writer always gets the blame.

A PBS Star is born!
Paging Ken Burns!
-
Congratulations, Mr. President!
-
And congratulations, DR General Matthew!
-
Books are signed and ready for the helper, who'll be here at three. She'll ship all on Monday.
-
Listening to a terrific performance of the Barber violin concerto with Jascha Horenstein conducting - a conductor who has never been given his due - he's really fantastic and the soloist is, too.
-
Get me off this damn page.
-
Great news about your opening night, DR Matthew. May you continue to have fun during your run.
-
DR elmore3003, thanks for the review. Sounds like your musical arrangements are the star!
-
DR Ginny - do you have a Cricut machine? I just saw one advertised. It looks like a lot of fun.
-
Very excited about DR Jrand73's day. Wow! Love the photo, too.
-
I am a parade.

Onward
-
Four!
-
Finishing Hitchcock’s Murder, an early sound film. The sound is a problem.
-
Hello, everyone.
-
The half-caste transvestite acrobat dunnit. Of course.
-
So much news today!
Congrats to Elmore on the M&M opening and the great review. It sounds like a lovely show.
Has PBS approached you yet? :) It does sound like the sort of thing they’d like.
-
Congrats, too, to Matthew on his opening.
-
Congrats, three, to Jrand and his PBS debut. Great photo. How fun.
-
Not yet halfway through Barbra. Up to Jon Peters.
-
Hello, Jeanne!

I am sleeping extraordinarily well these days.
Yesterday was my first "fully functional" day of the week since my colonoscopy. The drugs they used had a lingering after-effect that made me feel a bit out of sorts. It did pass, however.
I often react to drugs given to me for a procedure. The doctors and nurses say, “That shouldn’t happen,” but it did. It does. They often really knock me out.

Hello, John!
-
Watching the alternate ending of Murder. The one used in the movie was pretty spectacular. Hitchcock had the visual style and editing greatness then.

I’ve been doing laundry — in HOT water — and will soon do a little cleaning. So mundane! So pedestrian!

Congratulations, JRand, on the filming.

What a luxury.

I gave Bruce two boxes of old Hollywood photos taken by my late neighbor. Lots of celebrities — Bob Hope, Debbie Reynolds, Tom Selleck, plus lots of people I didn’t recognize. There were several of John Travolta, too. Bruce felt that John Travolta would like to have them, as he’s probably never seen them, and they are being passed on to him.
-
It bugs me the way so many people think that because something is old it has no value. I love old things and even little things can be meaningful to someone. Going through my late neighbor’s stuff is quite a project, but I’ll just do it as I can.

I had to look that up :)

PAGE FIVE.

Off to a dinner party.

I tried to call her and got no answer. Meanwhile, one of my Current Events Club friends, who lives here, stopped by and brought us a beautiful Christmas cactus.

I don’t, DR Singdaw, but my niece does. She’s been on a pretty steep learning curve with it.

I’m just too frugal to see things tossed if someone can use them. Apart from the photos, I found 3 men’s shirts, brand new, 7 brand new photo albums, and assorted other stuff. I’m sure there’ll be some takers at the Goodwill store. I’m maybe a quarter of the way through.

For three days?
Four days in one case.
Groan.

Quiche in the oven, CVS version of Mucinex purchased, stuff is ready for church this weekend. Excited to get back to White Christmas this eve.
Your excitment is wonderful.

Found this on Facebook today:
Oh, my! :o Candid is right!
Sondheim was never one to hold back, I assume. If you follow these letters that keep popping up on Insta or Facebook. Now I have to find that recording of Shirely Bassey because I'm totally intrigued!
Let us know if you agree.

It bugs me the way so many people think that because something is old it has no value. I love old things and even little things can be meaningful to someone. Going through my late neighbor’s stuff is quite a project, but I’ll just do it as I can.
I think it is wonderful that you volunteered to do this project.
Trashing good clothing is a huge waste, and sad.

DR Jeanne, I have been so grateful during our downsizing that our son and daughter-in-law have wanted so much of our stuff. They sent a photo of their Thanksgiving dinner, which they ate at a table that belonged to my grandmother using china that belonged to my mother.
I think that’s really nice. It helps to keep the connection alive.
I agree, my daughter has my paternal grandmother’s china cabinet, dating from the 1920’s in which she keeps HER paternal grandmother’s china.

When you usher in December by kicking out the scammers in your life, that's called the Santos Clause.
I’m quite relieved he’s finally gone, what an embarrassment

I was running around all day today
-
First thing I had a zoom meeting which I had to leave halfway through to go to my audiology appointment
-
She adjusted my hearing aids and showed me how to use the app to change modes or amount of amplification
-
Then I had to drive over to my GP’s office for my follow up
-
I stopped at a local bakery, well known in this area as it’s been family owned for over 50 years, and picked up a plate of fancy cookies for the staff
-

And to want it at her age, she is indeed special.

My doctor did a thorough exam, and reviewed and discussed with me the results of the myriad tests taken in ER
-
Then she wrote me a referral for a cardiologist
-
Then I had to drive over to my GP’s office for my follow up
I was surprised your audiologist was open on a Saturday, but wow your GP as well :o
-
SIX!
-
Then I went off to the liquor store to buy a case of 3liter bottles of Manichevitz Concord grape wine for communion as we were nearly done with our last bottle last week
-
Then off to the church to set up the church for tomorrow’s service
-
Then off to ALDIs to buy milk, orange juice and bread
-
My doctor did a thorough exam, and reviewed and discussed with me the results of the myriad tests taken in ER
Was this a previously scheduled visit or one booked after your night at the hospital?
-
Then she wrote me a referral for a cardiologist
I thought you had one. Vibes you see this one soon and are very pleased with the doctor.
-
I also picked up this
-
And this
-
On Thursday I bought this
-
I teased the Vixter with the teddy yesterday, saying I needed to buy it it’s own seat on the plane
-
But it actually ended up here
-
The puppy will join it on Monday
-
The dinosaur however will be making a road trip in January
-
Then I came home and put away the groceries
-
And promptly fell asleep
-
I woke up around 7 and made a quick pot of chili, ( it’ll taste better tomorrow after the flavors have time to meld) and we had our dinner
-
Now we’re relaxing watching Midsommer Murders
-
Oh, you know what I didn’t do?

That was a surprising turn of events

I gave Bruce two boxes of old Hollywood photos taken by my late neighbor. Lots of celebrities — Bob Hope, Debbie Reynolds, Tom Selleck, plus lots of people I didn’t recognize. There were several of John Travolta, too. Bruce felt that John Travolta would like to have them, as he’s probably never seen them, and they are being passed on to him.
That's nice.
Yes. Bruce surprised me when he mentioned it; I’d forgotten about the Travolta connection.

Another cute one.

But it actually ended up here
That is sooo cute. I can't read the writing.

It’s a toy drive sponsored by one of the other tenants in our building
-
What is the Travolta connection?
-
Oh, look! Vixmom reached Page Seven at Seven O'Clock!

That's pretty cool, Jeanne.

Good luck, Jeanne!

I know a couple of people who think that all old things have great monetary value. ::)
-
"Value" can be defined in different ways, but no, not all old things have great monetary value...sadly.

Is it mistletoe or missle toad? I can never remember...

My eyelids are feeling very heavy.
-
And I didn't do a quarter of the things DR vixmom did today.
-
Well, I did work a 9-hour shift.
-
Anyway - good night friends.
-
Home from dancing and dancing.
-
Settling in with Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Hitchcock was right. He has no great flair for screwball comedy. But Carole Lombard is divine.
-
Robert Montgomery is fairly good too but the script is lame.
-
I’m getting tired.
-
May finish tomorrow.
-
Gratuitous post 200!
-
Loved The Nutcracker last night. Live orchestra with some really good dancing.
-
Back to Barbra. She’s up to A Star Is Born.
-
Slowly working to the halfway point.
-
She’s admirable. I loved her stories about Ingmar Bergman, who wanted her to star in a film version of The Merry Widow. Strange but true.
-
Looking to get off page seven.
-
Only a few more posts.
-
Tomorrow’s schedule is already making me tired.
-
I don’t see a nap in there.
-
Onward!
-
Eight!
-
Good night, all.

Wow...and on a Saturday? Is that normal, or do you get overtime?

Very nice.

I can't remember when (or if) there's been a local ballet that has live music accompaniment.

Tomorrow morning, my friend Kyle and I will be recording our next Sunday on the Mic with George (https://open.spotify.com/show/3CZoqL2Yv3HnEx2T3drLLU) podcast, and our guest this week will be the director of Sunday in the Park with George that Kyle and I were in this summer. :)
