Sad news about the flooding in San Diego. Around 1988, I spent six weeks there working on a musical for the Gaslamp Quarter Theatre. The show was a mess, but I loved San Diego.

I have seen three of the nominated films.....so that's something.

I did enjoy OPPENHEIMER and THE HOLDOVERS.

I suppose - since I wasn't nominated - my wishes would be Giamatti for Best Actor, RDJ for Best Supporting Actor, and for song "I'm Just Ken" which was my favorite part of the Barbie movie.

TOD:

The very best fried chicken I have ever had was cooked by my Mom  Every time!

She always bought a small chicken.  She preferred a 2-pounder.  She cut it up herself.

She removed as much skin as possible.

She soaked it overnight in buttermilk.

She would drain it, and then she would salt and pepper it.

Next, she took a paper bag, filled it with Bisquick, and put several pieces of chicken inside and shook it vigorously.

She did all the pieces that way.

She used an electric skillet and Canola oil.

She had an innate sense of how hot the oil should be to initially brown the chicken and then to reduce the heat to let it cook through.

That chicken was always perfection.

No, I have never managed to attain the level of perfection her chicken always had.

Excellent night of sleep!

I love this trend.

Lots to do today, but we shall see, we shall see.

The Oscar nominations are of passing interest only for me.

Am shocked that a sub-par Indiana Jones score received a nomination.

However, given John Williams' age and impressive fortitude, I expect it's a "respect" nomination.

I was shocked at no acting nominations for "Saltburn", which surely should have received a supporting actress nomination.

The "Barbie" conundrum continues:  America Ferrera for supporting actress?  She made no impression on me at all as an award-worthy participant.  I like her a lot, but not that performance in particular.

Ryan Gosling for supporting actor?  Playing Ken?  Will wonders never cease?

Oh, well.

TOD: What is the absolute best fried chicken you’ve ever had?

Well, I have never had fried chicken that I found to be OMG incredibly good.  The reason is that my family had a woman that worked for us on Mondays.  Monday's I would return home to the smell of dinner cooking.  She alternated between three dishes, Oxtail stew, spareribs, and fried rabbit.

If we had guests for dinner on friend rabbit day we learned to tell them it was fried chicken or they would freak out.  They ALWAYS said it was by far the best fried chicken they ever had.

My OMG, indredibly good, best fried chicken was actually fried rabbit cooked by an incredibly good cook.

Ted had been in the Broadway and touring casts of My Fair Lady, Half A Sixpence, and Hello, Dolly!, among others. In this photo, he's the man in the straw hat at the right side of the photo. Ted was also a huge UFO enthusiast and a very funny man with a sharp, quick wit./ I haven't seen him in years, but he's always been one of my favorite people in the Chorus.

Oscar noms. As expected, not a single nomination for Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret, for the simple reason that no Academy members watched it. A movie isn't at 99% rave reviews for no reason. Disgusting. Otherwise, I think we can all pretty much call the winners right now. And I hate TEN movies for best picture. Why not just nominate twenty or thirty? It's time for the Oscars to go away, frankly. They're a joke. Interesting that neither Maestro or Barbie got a best director nod. Neither deserves it, but it's surprising nonetheless.

Then I talked to him about his prescriptions and his doctor and which hospital he always went to.  And he said IU HEALTH.  So I went to their website and clicked on "Medicare Advantage Plans" put in his zip code and county......and chose him a nice MAP with no monthly premium that should cover his needs well....and includes a few extra dental/eye/hearing benefits he may need someday.

Filled out the application and submitted it and it was accepted, so we shall see what the future brings.

I'm assuming his CareSource will end when Medicare starts.

I was very fond of Michael Feingold, a wonderful writer and critic, but no one wanted to be near him when he was drunk and no one was safe. I last saw him at a party to view a documentary on the last living Ziegfeld show girl. He was sober, and I gave him a copy of my recording of Dearest Enemy. He died too young.

That's funny!  I'm not a fan of fried chicken (the bones gross me out :o ), so you wouldn't have had to lie to me about what it was. ;)

I learned today that a friend from the New York City Gay Men's Chorus, Ted Bloecher, died recently at the age of 94.

My condolences, Larry.  But 94 years sounds like a good long run.

Had a call from Muse Margaret - she still has about fifty pages to go, but she wants to do them tomorrow. I knew it would probably be too many pages to read in one sitting. She did have about three small excisions she wanted me to make and she was right about all three and I basically knew she'd ask for them - but I wanted to write it the way I did just so I could get it on paper, but excising it was simple as pie and that's done. I also know there's one more sequence she'll get to in thirty pages and I think I mentioned this in the notes, where I've already marked the cuts I know she'll want. I'm glad I wrote it as I did and I wanted her to read it, but I was so confident she'd want the cuts that I pre-made them.

This goes back to the time when he was the Music Director of the NY Philharmonic.

For as much as December releases had a bad morning, it was even worse for Spring releases. Our beloved “Are You There, God? Past Lives has that fragmented time framework that BK doesn’t care for. It’s a little much here, but it often works with the theme. I just grew to love the three main characters and the director’s choice to give them room to be themselves, sometimes warts and all.

I watched and very much enjoyed the 2nd episode of "True Detective: Night Country".

Weird things are happening, but they manage to pull it off rather well.

The floods in San Diego are horrible.

I hope that we hear from Rodzinski soon.
Vibes that he and the family are safe, dry, and enjoying Carlsbad.

It has rained three inches today here and it’s still raining. We had flash floods earlier this week (yesterday, in fact) and it looks like it’s continuing another day.

I did not sleep well. Once again, we have no heat in the apartment, no rattle of the radiator, and I hate getting out of bed on a cold morning without any sign of heat.

Larry, I’m so sorry that you have no heat in your apartment.
What’s going on in your building?
Vibes that this gets fixed asap.

I thought it was about time I read The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. While I am enjoying it I don't know if I will read the second book.  Neither is very long.

Or the third or fourth. But thanks for all the fish.

LOL are you suggesting I continue reading all of the books?

I think you should read all four books of the trilogy

Sorry, Vixmom, but there are five books in the "increasingly inaccurately named Hitchhikers Trilogy." ;)

And there is a sixth book, which I have but haven't read, but that was written by a different author.

I'm sure some of you have heard the old joke about Leonard Bernstein.
This goes back to the time when he was the Music Director of the NY Philharmonic.

Two matrons are standing outside Lincoln Center, looking at one of the marquees.

The first woman says, "Have you heard that Leonard Bernstein might be GAY?"
The second woman replies, "My! Is there ANYTHING that man can't do?"

:))

The opposite. I gave up after three. This was back in college. I was not amused.

I haven't read them in years.  I just remember enjoying them back then.

The great broadcaster Charles Osgood has died. For my friend Carol, the CBS Sunday Morning show was her worship services. She got me to watch it, and he really knew how to hold your attention. And without seeming to try. I am sure he worked hard, but he was so natural, so empathic.

Oh, no. :( I always enjoyed his segments
