Well, you've read the notes, the notes called me BK, and now it is time for you to post until the calling cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: MONETIZE!
-
Can't wait to read the e-book!
-
TOD: Favorite choral pieces? I can do this!
- Mahler 2 and Mahler 8. Yes, the chorus only comes in at the end of Mahler 2, but it's so incredibly gorgeous. For recordings I like my hometown heroes, MTT with the San Francisco Symphony.
- Bernstein Mass. Alsop's recording is my current favorite.
- Verdi Requiem. All I've heard is the Giulini recording, which is fine but I don't love it.
- Fauré Requiem. I like Shaw's recording.
- Duruflé Requiem. Also Shaw's recording. If you want to hear what French Latin sounds like, try Duruflé's recording. For me it's an, um, acquired taste.
- Carmina Burana. I like Ozawa's Berlin recording, done when they were really trying to show off the dynamic range of CDs.
- Adams El Niño. Nagano's original recording has the incomparable Lorraine Hunt Lieberson as a soloist, as does the SFS Mahler 2.
- Bruckner Locus iste. Just the perfect motet. Bernius's Stuttgart recording is really fine.
- Hanson Symphony No. 7. I have a soft spot in my heart for this one as I attended the concert that was released on Bay Cities. That may still be my favorite even though Seattle's recording is obviously more professional.
-
Orff - Carmina Burana (https://www.amazon.com/Orff-Carmina-Burana-Carl/dp/B000001G5X/) (<-- link is to my favorite recording)
Duruflé - Requiem (we did excerpts of this when I went to All-State Choir in high school)
Lloyd Webber - Requiem
Domenico Scarlatti's Sacred Choral Works (https://www.amazon.com/Scarlatti-Domenico-Sacred-Choral-Works/dp/B00002609X/), as performed by the Western Washington University Concert Choir. I'm on this CD! :D
There's a lot of choral work in the original Disney soundtrack and the original German cast recording of The Hunchback of Notre Dame bt Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz that I really like.

Rodzinski, so sorry to hear of the family tsouris for your brother-in-law.
-
Ron, what an odd Facebook story!
-
vixmom, sending condolences on the loss of your family friend.
-
Good morning, all!
-
I slept quite well.
-
I have no plans for today, so I'll putter about the apartment and maybe put out a few fires.

Ormandy's Messiah was my first recording of the piece. I liked it at the time until I discovered it was not complete. In 1964, I sang in the chorus of a complete Messiah with the Cincinnati Symphony conducted by Max Rudolf, like Ormandy a great conductor of early 20th century training. I think Ormandy's approach is still ion the Victorian world of big choruses, big orchestras, big voices from the soloists, and slow tempo. In 1965, Sir Colin Davis with Phillips Records and Charles Mackerras with EMI/Angel released the first attempts to return Händel's great work to its baroque roots. Since then, Messiah's tempi have got more brisk, soloists ornament their vocal lines more, and orchestras ands choruses get smaller.
I like a few of the later recordings, particularly John Butt's, but my heart belongs to the Davis and Mackerras recordings. As the Baby Bear said, it's just right.
-
Good morning
-
I have no news since I just woke up and must get moving
-
Vibes for the Rodzinski clan
-
I’m just gonna Wordle and go shower
-
Ormandy's Carmina Burana was my first recording of the work and it remains my favorite.
William Walton's Belshazzar's Feast conducted by Leonard Slatkin
Britten's War Requiem conducted by the composer
Sullivan's romantic The Golden Legend

That was unexpected
-
Poulenc's brief but glorious Gloria, I first heard Bernstein's recording with his wonderful Chichestert Psalms, and I love the soloist, Judith Blegen.
Dvorak's macabre The Spectre's Bride; I think the Czech is more authentic, but the New Jersey Symphony's English version is good for an English-speaking listener.
-
Good morning, friends.
-
I had some unexpected Internet connection issues last night, so was unable to rejoin you in the evening.
All is resolved.

And what if someone mistakes a butterfly for a potato chip?
That's a thought well worth pondering, since it moved us closer to page 2!
-
Can we safely say that there are no extraneous thoughts on HHW, if they move us closer to whatever the next page might be?
-
Like, for example - Page Two!
-
As the great rabbi once must have said, the only foolish post on HHW is one that goes unexpressed.
-
Or did the great rabbi say the only foolish question is the question that goes unasked?
-
Does anyone recall the line from Woody Allen that mentioned the great rabbi whose sense of humor was said to have inspired many pogroms?
Would he have dared to offer that comedy line in this era?
-
Tonight is the opening for the musical "The Notebook" - which seems to have been generating positive buzz on the net and good box office.
The reviews could tell all this evening.
-
Turn that

Turn that frown license plate upside down!
That's pretty funny - and even kind of amazing!
-
Good morning, all.
-
Is that a real license plate?
Either way, what a clever idea!
-
TOD:
Way too many to list, but a few:
Benjamin Britten: War Requiem, the composer conducting
Herbert Howells: Requiem (a cappella) and the Hymnus Paradisi (with orchestra), which share musical material
Maurice Durufle: Requiem - the Robert Shaw recording with orchestra is excellent, but I also like the version with just organ and a few strings
William Walton: Belshazzar's Feast, as DR elmore3003 mentioned. The Robert Shaw recording is very good.
All of the J.S. Bach masterpieces: the St. John and the St. Matthew Passions, the Mass in B minor, the Christmas Oratorio
Vaughan Williams: Mass in G minor
Igor Stravinsky: Mass
Leonard Bernstein: Mass
-
Is that a real license plate?
Probably not. But I like it.
-
I’m about to leave for a teeth cleaning and checkup.
-
Good morning, all.
-
Love many of the pieces mentioned, especially the Bach St John Passion.
Does Bernstein’s The White House Cantata apply? What about Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 Resurrection or Beethoven’s Ninth?
-
Vibes for the Rodzinski BIL.

DR Jrand thanks for letting me know that was a lamp on top of the tv.

DR Vixmom congratulations on your new stove. May you be very happy with it.

From Vixmom:
No Wi-Fi no airfryer no convection just a nice regular stove with self clean
Then that is not a warming drawer at the bottom?
-
I prefer baking in a regular oven. I like the convection bake for baked potatoes or toasting almonds and both of those can be done in a regular baking oven.
-
DR Ron, regarding your FB post how do you plan on responding to Susan?

DR Vixmom condolences on the loss of your long time neighbor.

Wanting your Dr. to remove your skin cancer
Thank you. Yes, it is very frustrating. I'm more bothered by the extra time of needless pain while I heal than worrying about the cancer, which too is a concern.

Wow! :o Amazeballs!! ;D

Growing up my family either eat out or purchase deli food to take home for our Sunday brunch. I was very lucky to live in a large Jewish community with many options close by. For us it was either Factor's Deli or Nate 'n Al's. When I was ten Junior's Deli opened and was added to our rotation.
-
I have many happy memories of all three places. Junior's became extra special as an adult as that was the place Keith & I would meet my cousin when we were in town. We would see her with the rest of her family, and then have this one time just with her. We lost my cousin in '02 to the family curse. Every time we went to Junior's I thought of her. Unfortunately a number of years ago Junior's lost their lease but the building was still there and I would be reminded of happier days driving past it.
-
Last night the building, on Westwood Blvd at the corner of Pico, burned :(

Aargh, musical gut punch today with Esa-Pekka Salonen announcing that he's leaving the San Francisco Symphony after his contract is finished next season.
-
In May we will be in Belfast where the Titanic was built. I will be thinking of DR TCB as well as my great, great-uncle by marriage.
-
DR MichaelG my great uncle by marriage was Captain Smith.
-
DR JANE that is sad news about the fire.
I was in Belfast once....and it is most interesting.......

No more storms until about 11 p.m. here....but the noon time storms were most disturbing.

Jane, the song lyric BECAUSE I'M HAPPY (from one of your favorite "happy" songs if I remember correctly) was just the puzzle on Wheel of Fortune.

I listed a few things she failed to "recall" about four years ago, including scarcity of paper products in stores, scarcity of some grocery items in stores, increased gas prices, all related to the COVID pandemic. Further, I added that the DOJ was being weaponized to do Trump's bidding, and I added that Trump called military members, living and dead, "losers" and that he refused to visit a U.S./Allied cemetery on one of his state visits.
