Well, you've read the notes, the notes went to the ballet, and now it is time for you to post until the twirling cows come home.

I think that when the book is new and it’s not a verified purchase, that first posting takes forever. Then others get through much quicker. At least that has seemed to be the pattern on a few that I’ve paid attention to. Or, who knows, maybe there’s just literally no rhyme or reason to it, no matter how you try to analyze it.

Happy Easter to everyone.  The newest Broadway Radio Show episode is now up and it's another DIVA Shout Out show as we look at the career of UK star Maria Friedman, who has moved on to become a director and also a Tony Award front-runner this season for her work on the smash revival of Sondheim's Merrily We Roll Along.  But on this episode we look back at her work onstage in the West End and her recording career with lots of wonderful musical selections!

Since this is best site on all of the internet, I will ask my question here.

Next season at my theeder we will do two musicals of course....one director wants to do MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS (and he can have that Ken Ludwig abomination) - so I am looking for a funny comedy with a known title that I can offer.

We have an audience that pretends that sex and woke and pajamas do not exist - so it must be a "family" comedy in language and situation although there is some "wiggle" room there - so to speak.

We have done most of the classics & Neil Simon's chestnuts recently - so I am looking for something else.

And I know I will get lots of suggestions here.

I was late to Once the movie - I only saw it last year, which is also when I heard about the Broadway version. I love the movie so I was very curious about how this intimate film could be adapted into a stage musical.

The performances and direction were excellent, but the types of problems I expected from this type of adaptation were indeed there. The two biggest issues for me:

- To make the show longer, we spend more time with minor characters we really don't care about. The character of Billy was particularly intrusive.
- The understatement in the movie was largely lost. The implicit things you could see and feel that weren't spoken are now not only spoken, but spoken LOUDLY AND REPEATEDLY IN CASE YOU DIDN'T GET IT.

But these seem kind of inherent to an adaptation to Broadway. I'm not really sure what you could do differently. In this case, the material just seems better suited to its original form.

The one thing I think could have been avoided was a sourness and meanness towards some of the characters, especially Bank Manager. The movie treats everyone with affection and understanding, including Heroin Addict. The show, less so.

One other nit as a musician is how they change "Gold" to be one of Guy's songs. Of course, in the show the actors are not singing their own songs, so it doesn't matter that "Gold" is Fergus's song while the rest are Glen's songs. But it comes from a musically different place than Glen's songs so it's a little odd. But that's my problem. I doubt hardly anyone else even notices, especially if you didn't see the film.

I still liked the show! It's a good show and it's a lot of fun to see different actors interpret these wonderful characters. It just doesn't come up to my very favorite adaptations where I like them better or equal to the source material.

DR FREDDIE medium sized cast.

The audience loved "You Can't Take It With You" and "Harvey"....

We did "Cactus Flower" awhile ago.....too many sets......looking for a one set show if possible.....

I liked the movie Once, but I loved the musical Once so much more. I saw it first in its off-off-Broadway run and again after it transferred to Broadway. I still believe it's the most successful method of adapting a film to a stager show: it was as if someone had told the playwright the basic story of the film and then the writer wrote the book of the musical with no intentions of trying to duplicate the film onstage. I thought it was brilliant, but much of it was how wonderful that original Broadway cast was. I thought the original stage production was close to perfection. By the end pf the musical, I was sobbong; the movie did not break my heart like the show did.

I appreciate your thoughts on Once, Michael G. I wish I liked the movie a little more. But I kind of tired of the main characters. I liked them better in the stage version. I also liked the immersive nature of the staging. I saw it where I usher. It was there only for a night, and we had trouble getting people to use the onstage bar.

The stage version wrecked me with the line, “It can’t be about that.”

I love how the nuance changes, depending on which word you emphasize:

It CAN’T be about that.
It can’t BE about that.
It can’t be ABOUT that.
It can’t be about THAT.

I recommend The Man Who Came to Dinner. But it's a VERY large cast. Otherwise, for smaller stuff you can't go wrong with The Odd Couple. If looking at Ayckbourn - Bedroom Farce is great.  Noises Off is a great farce.

What are other examples of film to stage adaptations, outside of Disney / animation / superhero genres?

I'll be seeing a controversial new example, Opening Night, in a few weeks. Reviews that polarized for a composer I like kind of draw me like a moth to a flame.

"Nine" and Sweet Charity" are adaptations of Fellini films, for example.

"A Little Night Music" is an adaptation of an Ingmar Bergman film.

I love the original Opening Night and most of Cassavettes’s movies. It would be hard for me to find anyone who could equal Gena Rowlands in anything. But this show intrigues, based on the reviews.

Each of these shows is a marvel on stage. On fil, Charity is a fascinating misfire, Night Music is a clumsy mess that I love but do not respect, while Nine is a horror.

I love Maria Friedman!

When the tour came to Olympia (and I ushered), people had no trouble going onstage for the bar. ;)

I didn't have rehearsal today, but I never saw the movie, so I can't compare the two.

100% agreement. I think for anyone who liked the subtle charms of the movie, the stage version was a heavy handed affair that negated all that subtlety. If I never saw the film, I might have enjoyed it somewhat.
