Strawberry rhubarb pie. My favorite.

Rhubarb and okra: two dishes for my disposal.

However, strawberry shortcake at this moment would make me very, very happy.

Between 1956 and 1964, when I left home for college, I averaged a movie a week. At that time, Middletown, Ohio, had three movie theaters - at some point, the Strand, where I saw Ben-Hur,  folded, got refurbished as the Studio, and opened with Shirley MacLaine's What a Way to Go! - and there was usually something playing at one of them that might be suitable for my brother Macbeth and me. Occasionally my mother vetoed something; I remember three Gigi, On the Beach, Baby Doll - but her mothering was so passive/aggressive that a lot of things got past her.

At school, my movie going went to hell, and I probably saw an average of maybe three to five movies between September and June and catching up at the drive-in during the summer. After I finished school, I was mostly involved in community theater and community symphony, so I missed a lot of movies and TV programs.

All this is a prelude to why I never saw Hotel; I think I would have loved it.

I just remembered: after my Aunt Jenny saw Suddenly Last Summer, Macbeth and I were forbidden to see that as well.

DR Michael G, thanks for the information on the German camps films. When I was in college, my friend Barbara Peffers took a summer trip to Europe. The group she was with toured Auschwitz. Half way through the tour she became completely traumatized and had to be carried out.

Small world!  I have a brother who married a Lady Macbeth, which makes my brother a Macbeth.

Maybe they're related or maybe cut from the same cloth.

They say where's there's a will, there's relatives.  :)

I'm wondering if our family was partially to blame.  We should have suspected something and protected everybody the moment we heard my brother was married to a lady named "Lady Macbeth."

:)

Anyway, it's her birthday June 11.

Since we've been talking the last couple of days about families involvement with the concentration camps and WWII, here's more on our family.

Hitler couldn't destroy my dad's section of the Landau family, but Lady Macbeth was able to do that.  The tag line for my stories about Joann could be -

Don't miss HITLER 2
"She converted to Judaism and proceeded to completely finish off the Holocaust survivor family that the Nazi's couldn't finish off."

My father was a Holocaust survivor who lived to 100-1/2, passing away (from Covid) in February 2021. He had written his memories of the Holocaust by hand, planning at the time to form them into a book. We had his notes typed up, and a cousin put Dad's narrative online pretty much verbatim (though occasionally some words were just not legible to us, so instead of guessing what he was writing, we just noted that the specific words here and there were hard to read.  We wanted that to remain entirely in Dad's words.).

 https://www.drohobycz-boryslaw.org/images/intros/families/satri/kodesh/Nats_memoirs_vol_2_and_prayer_for___________family_as_is_on_9-21-2013.pdf

hoping to add his voice to the cry of "Never again," whether or not we're actually able to create the book Dad had once planned.

My memories may not have as big a target audience as Larry's, of course.  :)

My mom was a Holocaust refugee who came over on a boat at about eight years old, but her parents and sister were not able to get on the boat.  Just as my Dad wanted every detail of his experience with the Nazis known, Mom preferred not to talk about it.

My mom chose to go with the feeling that, as far as her life in America was concerned , the family (by birth, her aunt and uncle) that took her in and accepted her as their daughter, whose son (by birth, her first cousin) accepted her as his sister - were her parents and brother.  And their families always treated us as Mom being their daughter and sister, respectively.

I, too, never saw HOTEL back in its day. I was at school, too, and I did go to some new films, but I let a lot of traditional Hollywood fare go unseen. Due to the influence of the people around me, I was thrilling to the likes of THE GRADUATE, IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT, WAIT UNTIL DARK, IN COLD BLOOD, 2001, and MIDNIGHT COWBOY in those first couple of years.

I first saw HOTEL when I got that Warner Archives DVD several years ago, and then not that long ago in my little Preview Harvey marathon. Just those two times. I look forward to another soon, and I'll pay more attention to the music.

The play last night (Evelyn in Purgatory) was excellent - the play itself, a perfect cast, everything.

That makes two for two local plays this season in which the casting and directing have been exceptional, the other one being Diana Canova's Moon Over Buffalo. We have good theeder in these parts, but these were above and beyond.

I forgot that STRANGERS WHEN WE MEET also features one of the screen performances of Mr. Ernie Kovacs who is also most excellent.

And I think everybody is acting way above their pay grades....particularly Rush & Matthau.

A question for DR Jrand73, since you just op'ned --

How often, in the "post-covid" era, does your theeder suffer from notable low attendance? It almost doesn't matter what the play or musical is here, attendance is deplorable.

Okay, there are indeed exceptions. But in general...

DR CHAS SMITH - our season ticket numbers are down about 80-90 for each season since COVID....and walk up attendance is also down.

We do have sell outs - but many season ticket holders do not show up for all of the shows.

I am not sure that we will ever reach our pre-Covid attendance numbers.....it's just something we have to accept.

For the past two days I have been cleaning out and rearranging my spice cabinet. I have three unopened jars of marjoram. Don’t ask why. I cut three containers of basil down to two, two jars of mustard seeds to one, and who knows what all else. I inherited another person’s spices, so I now have more arrowroot than any one person needs. And I have bay leaves for more than a hundred stews. It’s going slowly. But I hope to get it done today.

Your mother was very fortunate to have a loving family.  Was she on the boat with them?

We wanted that to remain entirely in Dad's words.).

hoping to add his voice to the cry of "Never again," whether or not we're actually able to create the book Dad had once planned.

This is very interesting and wonderful that you have it.  Unfortunately I could not read too much of it as it hurt my eyes to read it.

A question for DR Jrand73, since you just op'ned --

How often, in the "post-covid" era, does your theeder suffer from notable low attendance? It almost doesn't matter what the play or musical is here, attendance is deplorable.

Okay, there are indeed exceptions. But in general...

Today, if my calendar is correct, is Sunday.

Today at 11 a.m., I shall meet my cousin Butch and his fiancee Sharon for lunch.

Afterward, i shall stop at Third Generation Restaurant and pick up my dinner.

Then, it's Zoom time.

I'm in a rut!

Sounds like a wonderful rut to be in!

I was thinking the same thing.

Freddie, thank you for sharing your father's memoirs.

Have you or your family tried contacting the US Holocaust Memorial Museum about it? They have memoirs from one of my 2nd cousins once removed who survived the Holocaust by passing as a Catholic girl, and another relative who survived the camps.

By coincidence, I had contact with a researcher at USHMM whose father was in my Dad's army battalion! I wanted to look him up when I visited Washington DC last year, but sadly he had died a few years before.

My father met a cousin in France who survived after being adopted by a family.  I never got her name.  I only know she was an actress.  At the time he thought she was the only survivor until we found family in Israel, but sadly too late for my father to communicate with his cousin.

I'm up, I'm up - nine hours of good sleep with very weird dreams, one of which was doing a book signing in New York in a store I never heard of on the upper west side, although no one seemed to know WHERE on the upper west side and when I looked at the street signs it said 17th and Third. For some reason I'd just settled into a hotel and gone there, but no one knew about it - elmore was the only one there and I asked him to call everyone we knew but he held out his flip phone and said it had died. I do think some people showed up at noon.

Mom preferred not to talk about any of the details of this. I'm sure for my Mom, there was a real element of survivor's guilt that she got to escape but her sister and parents didn't.

Towards the last years, Dad was very open about every aspect of his life, but Mom stayed as evasive as she did, in part because she was so young when she got here.

Mom and Dad were shocked when they realized (it was around spring 2013) that the money they'd built up, expecting to make life easier for the next generation, had caused the family to be ripped apart by the greed of our family's version of the Macbeths.

This morning I listened to Hedre We Are, the last Sondheim show. Jonathan Tunick had sorta warned me it might be a hard go, and maybe because of that warning, I was surprised that I didn't think so. I just kept thinking I wish I liked it more. Now I'm curious to see the two Bunuel movies.

I also listened to Evening Primrose, which I love, and Stages/Together Again, two Kimmel shows I also love. The CD happily arrived in yesterday's mail and made my morning.

I could stand long enough to do dishes and make the pie.

Would using a massager contraption help or hurt or do nothing for your neck?

So much violence when Kaye keeps hitting Roger, though.

I have a combined heating pad and massager. I can’t use the massager. It adds to the pain.

None of my family lived through the Holocaust, but my mother had a somewhat similar experience as your mother’s. When my mother was about five her father brought her to California with him, leaving her mother and brother in Texas. She was brought up in a Catholic boarding school. She had very little to say about it when I was growing up and the only thing she would say about Texas was to complain about the huge cockroaches! I think she put her old life behind her and that was that. It couldn’t have been easy, separated from both her parents at the age of five, cared for by only the nuns, and she could only speak Czech! She learned to speak English without an accent, but getting to that point must have been difficult. I think she didn’t want to be reminded of those years.

Sorry to hear about your pain, John G. Drinking a lot of water really does help. There’s a connection between dehydration and pain syndromes. Half an ounce of water for every pound of body weight is recommended by the holistic pharmacist I know. (Divide your weight by 2. That is the number of ounces you should strive for daily.) I find I need even more that that if I eat sugar or chocolate.

Hope you find relief soon.

I’ve been feeling rather low. In addition to the loss of my friend Rebecca a month or so ago I learned that two old friends have passed on. It happens to us all, I know. Why is it so difficult to stay in touch? We’re all busy, often buried. Staying in touch seems to be more the result of circumstance than intention.

Well, I was going to post this yesterday, but I was in the middle of something else and I saved it to a separate note app on my phone, so it has the direct links to yesterday's posts. :)

I had lunch today with the widow of August Wilson, who is a former neighbor of ours.

Wow. He was amazing. I've seen about half of the cycle he wrote.

I actually haven't seen any, but in 2013, The Green Space recorded all ten plays in his cycle, and simulcast the audio.

I was able to capture the complete audio series. :)

They're no longer able to stream, but this article has some more information:

New York Public Radio Announces American Century Cycle (https://www.americantheatre.org/2020/11/02/new-york-public-radio-announces-american-century-cycle/)

The 2013 recordings of August Wilson’s seminal series will be made available for educational purposes.

Wilson’s American Century Cycle is a series of 10 plays about the Black experience in America throughout the 20th century, all but one set in Pittsburgh’s Hill District. Directors for the project included Kenny Leon, Phylicia Rashad, Michele Shay, and the late Marion McClinton. The recorded readings feature many actors reprising the roles they performed onstage, including Leslie Uggams, Anthony Chisholm, Brandon Dirden, Russell Hornsby, the late Roger Robinson, Keith David, Ebony Jo-Ann, John Earl Jelks, Roslyn Ruff, S. Epatha Merkerson, Jerome Preston Bates,  Taraji P. Henson, and the late Chadwick Boseman. The readings were scored with original music by the late Bill Sims Jr. and other composers who worked with Wilson.

They used to have a combo pizza more toppings, but they discontinued that at the beginning of Covid and never brought it back.  That was my mom's favorite pizza.
