Well, you've read the notes, the notes were collectible, and now it is time for you to post until the collectible cows come home.

Records are my collecting hobby. I’ve even been to a record fair or two at the same Armory in NYC.
I probably have 8,000-9,000 records. Some of monetary value, some of only sentimental value.

What I wish I still had is the rolls from our player piano we had when I was a tyke. Back then, they still put some contemporary songs out on rolls. My folks had to give the piano away when it didn’t fit into a house we moved to.

I slept rather well, and all three cats behaved until 5:30, when Stella's continuous need for food took over As soon as she leaped off the bed, I knew we were heading for disaster. I rose immediately, turned on the light, chased her off the night stand, and a small doisaster was averted. Lately, all three cats have had an urge to get on top od the night stand and spill things onto the floor.

I remember we had the piano roll from “The Morning After” from The Poseidon Adventure.

Coincidentally, someone recently posted a few mp3's of piano rolls his family had (and had sadly gotten rid of), and I was surprised to see "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever" among the oldies. And your example is so much later.

And a book about Broadway originally owned and signed by Arthur Laurents....and some other odds and ends.
Title: Re: THE BOOK COLLECTOR
Post by: ChasSmith on September 26, 2024, 06:19:50 AM
I'm a collector, certainly, but it would be more accurate to say I dabble in collections.

I daresay (oh yes, I dare to say; sometimes I even dare to daresay) none would be worthy of being called a real collection by truly serious hardcore collectors, but I nevertheless have a few individual items that are without doubt rare and desirable.

Certainly in my few thousand records there are some nice treasures, but it's a selection tailored to my own personal tastes and not any sort of "completion" in any segment. This is probably like what DR Rodzinski is saying about his, with probably three times what I have. CDs round out some areas of this, of course.

Blu-rays, DVDs, and a few remaining laserdiscs are a collection, but the same disclaimer applies.

Other smaller collections are certain books; musical scores; a handful of film posters; a few types of maps; some vintage cameras and souvenir collectors plates and such, representing mid-century road travel; and no doubt a few other things that don't come to mind at the moment.
Title: Re: THE BOOK COLLECTOR
Post by: ChasSmith on September 26, 2024, 06:24:35 AM
DR Jrand74 kills me whenever he reminds me of the first edition with dust jacket of Atlas Shrugged that entered into my life for a dollar, and left it permanently when a friend "borrowed" it a year or two later.

EDIT:  I later found a tenth printing (maybe not even that early, I'm not sure now and it's packed up at the moment). Certainly not of much value, but still nicer to have than any later reprint.

I have autographed books by Ira Gershwin, Vernon Duke and Stephen Sondheim. Thank you, DR singdaw. I've just placed my order.

It looks like you can place only one order per address, so that would be it for this household - right? For some reason I'm thinking we were each able to order one in the past, but I think it's pretty clear that isn't the case now...if it even was then, I could be wrong.

We like pretty much anything good! As long as it's not the overly alcoholic styles that came into vogue with Robert Parker. We're surrounded by fine wine here in northern California and have enjoyed visits to many European wine regions over the years.

When we performed Don Giovanni a few years ago I had to try some Marzemino, the wine that the Don has for his final meal. So I got some shipped in from a store in New York - the shipping cost more than the wine. It was a decent regional northern Italian red, nothing remarkable.

I believe this is one of the first examples of product placement in entertainment. My theory is that Da Ponte had a relative or friend in the Marzemino wine trade.

TOD: I collect CDs and wine, but for listening and drinking vs investing. I had run out of space for CD storage, but then I discovered Space Saving Sleeves and now I have room to buy CDs again: https://spacesavingsleeves.com/

Those look really cool, especially if they fit all the paperwork without having to fold it in half.  I hate that.

They maintain the artwork, making it look more like a gatefold album. You just need to fold the right edge over the right hand side of the back insert. Often that's blank, but if there's a photo you might lose the edge. But that's a tiny nit in the overall quality. They also don't stand up straight by themselves, but I have enough CDs in digipaks, double CDs, and box sets that it works out.

Of course, you then have to do something with all the (non-recyclable) CD cases. :P

Our local Green Citizen takes them, though you have to pay them $1/pound. Now I know how many pounds of CD cases I had in my collection  :).

I also have a "Li'l Abner" poster purchased from BK a year or so ago.

This weekend was meant to be the first ever Mars Hill University (my alma mater) Theater Department Alumni Reunion.

More than 150 folks who obtained theater degrees from the school over the past 60 years signed up.

I made my excuses this morning, however.  Given the weather situation and my age, I thought it inadvisable to embark upon such a journey tomorrow given the appalling weather conditions amassing as a result of Hurricane Helene.  Every update is much worse than the last, and I don't want to be riding in gale force winds and driving rains, which seems to be the prognosis over the next couple of days.

I notified the organizer and offered up my two paid registration events to someone who may like them but hadn't yet paid.  He thanked me, said I'd be missed, and that was that.

Two hours later, I received a text advising that the university would be closed Friday and that all events scheduled that day are cancelled. That includes a dinner i paid for.

I suspect the entire events will be cancelled, however.  Perhaps it will be rescheduled for a time in the near future.

Otherwise, that's the way the reunions crumble.

I daresay no one else here will be impacted by the weather situation with Helene.

However, local weather people have said this will be one of the most fierce storms in recent memory.  I have no idea of how much my area will be impacted, but major flooding is predicted all around me, along with wind damages (especially trees) and the ubiquitous power outages that result.

Sigh.

I am under a Tropical Cycolone Warning, and a Tornado Warning, until tomorrow morning.  And that doesn't begin to cover the possible future.

Helene was classified as a Category 4 an hour ago and it had not made landfall.  We've gotten more than 6 inches of rain over the past 24 hours, and the storm hasn't made landfall yet.

What do you think. I'd need someone to help set up the site itself, but I gather that's not hard these days and I want it built so I can upload and do everything myself. It would take a couple of months to photograph and price things, but I have so much stuff and rather than toss, for example, complete runs of really good film magazines and such, I think there are people who'd be interested in such things.
