Well, you've read the notes, the notes were concrete, and now it is time for you to post until the concrete cows come home.

And the word of the day is: DEFIANT!

Welcome 553 GUESTS! Is that some kind of record?

Good morning, all!
-
I slept really well last night, so that was a nice change. It's supposed to get really cold tonight, so I may try to close a window today. I hope I can manage it.
-
Speaking of weather, I hope the damned hurricane blows Ron de Santis' sorry ass off the face of the earth and spares everyone else.

Today is another Gypsy day. "If Mama Was Married" has more problems than I expected, from wrong notes to big differences between the full scores and the published vocal score, which was created from the full scores! Often there are cues in the published score that were cut and don't excists in the cast recording or orechestra parts. Oy!
-
A conundrum, indeed.
-
Good morning, friends.

And others.

Curves? I've got plenty.

Curves galore.

~~~CONTINUED MULTIPLE MODERN MAJOR MIRACLE VIBES~~~ for the likes o' BK!!!!!
Did I miss DR John G.'s repor on how the Christmas Cake recipe turned out?
Good morning, all.
This gets more astounding with every song!
How did all of this ever come to pass? I hope all will be revealed in Volume XII of DR Elmore's memoirs.
Good morning, all
MichaelG and Rodzinski, thanks for your thoughts on the STEREOPHONIC lawsuit, and thanks John G for chiming in.
The connection to DAISY JONES AND THE SIX, which MichaelG mentioned last night, is quite interesting.
I've wondered whether there being no legal action about DAISY JONES AND THE SIX could have something to do with Stevie Nicks expressing her approval of that project. She wrote on instagram:
"stevienicks
Just finished watching Daisy Jones + the 6 for the 2nd time. In the beginning, it wasn't really my story, but Riley seamlessly, soon became my story.
It brought back memories that made me feel like a ghost watching my own story.
It was very emotional for me. I just wish Christine could have seen it. She would have loved it.
Hopefully it will continue... "
Got a surprise check in the mail yesterday, one I'd completely forgotten to look for. It was from the US Treasury and I had no idea what it could be until I saw the notation "JURY DUTY". It was for $91.42 - the $50 for one day served, plus mileage. Incredible. The feds really do pay, and that's whether you have a job or not. And to think that could have been several hundred smackers if I'd been selected to sit on the case. That sure beats the local/state level, which is $zero except for those who would be docked pay and get some reimbursement for that.
Did I miss DR John G.'s repor on how the Christmas Cake recipe turned out?
Cake smelled great while baking. It is now wrapped in cheesecloth. In a week I start pouring frangelico on it and continue weekly for a few months or so.
Oh, thanks. I had forgotten it was one of those long-term dealies.
-
So I have time to book my tickets, then.
Thanks for that link, Jrand.
The feelings by the former showgirls about the implosion were quite touching.
Yes they were. I still don't know how they do that......in the middle of the city.....wild.
Early voting starts next Tuesday in my area.....so I shall be doing that.....
Ours starts Oct. 20 or 21.
Listening to the Cry Baby recording. I really enjoy this score. Very sad one of the creators died from covid.
I can't believe it took that many tries to get the word. ::)
Now that we are home Keith will likely return to doing Wordle in the afternoons. I'll have to wait to know how many it took him. Because of him, I do understand your frustration.
We did thank you, and made up for my difficult beginning. While I still hurt it is tolerable.
And you're home just in time to be only 25 posts from a 136,000 millstone.
Could be three millstones in one week!
I'm up, I'm up - was in bed by one and up at eight - seven hours. Ironically, no noise. Go know.
When we were there in early June, it looked like they had been throwing stuff out the windows. It didn't look like there was much left then.
Today is another Gypsy day. "If Mama Was Married" has more problems than I expected, from wrong notes to big differences between the full scores and the published vocal score, which was created from the full scores! Often there are cues in the published score that were cut and don't excists in the cast recording or orechestra parts. Oy!
Have had some busy days this week, some of it constructive and some rather bothersome.
The bothersome:
I have two friends living in Florida who are most definitely in harm's way with Hurricane Milton. One is my age (76) and he is staying with his 87-year-old sister and 93-year-old brother-in-law because they don't want to leave. He is determined to "hunker down" with them and ride it all out. They are more inland than coast-side, but not far enough to avoid major wind and rain damage.
The other friend was on a visit to NYC and returned two days ago. He refuses to say whether he will evacuate, and he lives in a condo in Tampa. I have urged him to reconsider, but he has not replied.
Sigh.
On the plus side, some of my cousins had their power restored yesterday afternoon. They are out in the country, and it took a while for the restoration. They are in a heavy woodland area and their power lines were off a dirt road. I can well imagine that road was virtually impassable for a few days this week. Many trees came down across that road, too, so...
Johnston is "rural" small town at best, but it sure beats the heck out of being out in the boonies, especially since infrastructure is better maintained.
Another bothersome thing:
When I was at my first Navy duty station -- Naval Air Station Jacksonville Florida -- my best friend was a guy in my rating (Radioman). We had some good times, I was designated godfather to his first-born son, that sort of thing.
The friendship, since we were in the Navy, faced mandatory separation when he was assigned to Hawaii just after I was given approval to cross-train into the Journalist rating. We bade farewell and promised to stay in touch, but that never really works.
Roughly four years later, after two tours in Italy, I was assigned to the Bureau of Naval Personnel as staff journalist to the senior enlisted man in the Navy (Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy). Among the perks of that job was easy access to finding everyone/anyone in the Navy and where they were located. The mystery, however, was what happened to my friend who was not on any list of active-duty Navy people. He had reenlisted four years earlier for a six-year hitch. His reason was that he was married and was in a "Critical" rating, meaning that reenlistment bonuses were very high if you committed yourself. When I was searching for him, he should have had two years left on that reenlistment.
Fast forward to the years when the internet became common in households, Google became a search engine and then Facebook began helping us find former friends and classmates.
Essentially 49 years elapsed during which time I made occasional searches on Facebook for former friends, but this one friend wasn't to be found.
One day, i received a message asking me if I was the same Ron Pulliam he served with in Jacksonville FL 50 years earlier.
I was. It was my friend. Over the months since that time, we have spoken quite a few times. He has regaled me with details of his three marriages, his children and grandchildren, his jobs and a more than generous recounting of all the Navy experiences he had before he was granted a separation from the service because of a divorce and having children to care for.
Yesterday, i had another call from him. It purported to be a welfare call to ensure I was as okay as my posts, post-Helene, indicated. But, for the majority of hour we spoke, it was a non-stop recap of all his accomplishments/experiences in the Navy, how much he wished he could do it again and many sidebars. I probably had 5 minutes of the conversation.
And now I find myself never really wanting to talk to him again. Whatever our friendship was based upon, I am at a loss as to what it was. And my memories of him never included non-stop self-aggrandizement.
I'd much rather discuss movies, music, some politics, etc.
What does anyone else think?
-
Oh, my goodness! I know a few people who talk all about themselves like that. ::) I am more of a listener, so it kind of works out...usually. ;)
-
But you'd think that after 49 years and him finding you that he'd at least take a breath and let you speak!
-
Oh, my goodness! I know a few people who talk all about themselves like that. ::) I am more of a listener, so it kind of works out...usually. ;)
I think he expect me to be impressed, but I truly am not. He is a bore.
Update on my next door neighbor who had a stroke some weeks back. Progress has been slim. I don’t think he’ll ever return. His wife will have to sell the house and move him to long-term care.
One day, he was lending me a hedge trimmer and asking me to water plants when they left town. Now, he won’t be coming back.
I sent his wife some G&S audio clips to see if that sparked anything.
Vibes for DR Rodzinski’s neighbors.
Starting Travels with My Aunt. Fun Maggie Smith, who seems to be channeling Estelle Winwood.
Latest word is the Broadway theaters are dimming the lights for Maggie Smith.
"In addition to Creel, a well-known and well-liked actor who died on Sept. 30 at age 48, the theater owners said they would also dim the lights of all theaters to honor Maggie Smith, the British stage and screen star, as well as the actor Adrian Bailey, both of whom died last month. The lights for Bailey will be dimmed Oct. 17; the dimmings for Creel and Smith will be scheduled in consultation with their families."
Good weather news!
That is rough, DR Rodzinski. I'm sorry to hear it.
And that is just bizarre, DR Ron Pulliam.
I think that would be quite the disappointment, reconnecting with someone and finding...that that's all there is? Wow.
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/oct/05/squeezed-out-last-accordion-maker-in-france-to-close-shop-after-105-years
The last French maker of accordions, Maugein, has gone into liquidation after 105 years. They blame unfair competition from China, along with the slump brought on by Covid. The last instrument leaves the factory next week.
Every year my mother made several traditional fruit cakes for Christmas. I believe she used Brandy.
I suppose I should take a snapshot of this one.
One post late, but still Congrats, Jane!
I wrote a cover story about a guy in Pumpkintown, SC, who does custom slate headstone carving. The issue is out now but I haven’t been able to reach the guy to let him know and get him some copies. Hope he’s ok.
The article sounds interesting. I hope he is ok and that your are able to reach him.
We got approval to hire up to 10 additional folks for our department. Unfortunately, due to the timing of the posting and my vacation, I'm going to miss out on conducting any of the interviewing for said positions.
-
When do you leave on vacation, singdaw?
CBS put the whole episode 1 of MATLOCK (2024 version) on YouTube.
We are flying to Philly early Monday morning.
And driving from there down to the Jersey shore.
Wishes you have a great trip.
Good night, Jane
-
Good night, friends.
-
And others.
Keith did Wordle in five today. Considering the word I think that was rather good.
I got it in three. It helped that I got three letters right n the first guess.
-
And driving from there down to the Jersey shore.
Hope Milton stays far away.
Back to Travels with My Aunt. I can't remember the book at all.the movie is sloppy but enjoyable.
-
I went to a Boo-Hoo Buffet tonight. That's what a friend has dubbed a wake at the home of a person who died. Make the family host all these people and feed them. I like the name.
The house was on a street called Cave Lane. Sounds like hero of a bad romance novel.
"Oh, Cave. You are so deep, dark and mysterious."
Monumental seven!
Finishing up Independence, a half-hour film John Huston made for the National Archives in 1976. Ken Howard reprises his 1776 role as Thomas Jefferson. Pat Hingle, who played Ben Franklin in 1776, is John Adams here. Eli Wallace is Franklin.
It's on YouTube.
-
YouTube has a few Huston films that I can't find elsewhere. One is We Were Strangers with Jennifer Jones. It's a historical drama about Cuba.
-
I am not caught up
This morning I called a few phone screen repair places and was given quotes between $400 -$500
Good night, all.
This day has gotten away from me, which is very odd as I sang You'll Never Get Away from Me really loudly.
-
I just don't get how this day got away from me.
-
Anyway, I watched a movie and now I'm here.
-
I had a Tom's bacon cheeseburger and fries for food. It traveled much better than other times and was really, really good.
-
Even the fries were beautiful.
-
Even the orchestra is beautiful.
What am I, Joel Grey all of a sudden?
I'm home after a full run-through and have just finished eating my last piece of leftover lasagna.
-
I had no burrito today.
-
I actually thought about driving through Taco Bell and getting one before I got home, but I didn't do that.
-
I came directly home and I'm glad I did.
-
The lasagna was quite delish, even reheated. :)
-
Gratuitous Post #202!!
Did you look on YouTube to see if you can replace the screen yourself? I was able to do that with my previous phone, an LG G5, and the screen only cost $30 and the set of tools that had the one non-standard screwdriver that was needed only cost about $11. I got both on eBay and save a TON of money...assuming it's possible to do that with your phone. :-\
Either way...
