Well, you've read the notes, the notes paid the bills, and now it is time for you to post until the bill paying cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: SYNCRETISM!

Good morning, all!
-
Good morning, all.
-
Last night, I had a strange Halloween occurrence.
-
I went to bed at 9:00 and woke at 11:00 in need of a bathroom break. I got back to bed, checked out the cats - Annabelle sleeping on her princess pillow next to me, Thatch next to me, and Stella sleeping on the floor by my clothes closet - and turned off the light. As I cuddled next to Thatch, I heard loud bird chirping. It was coming from the space between the filing cabinets and the large front window. What I was hearing was one of the cats' toys, a little bird that chirps when you squeeze it or step on it. About a week before, I had been dealing with fallen books and crap that Annabelle had caused to fall off the bookcases in her climbing.
-
As soon as the chirping began, Annabelle and Thatch sat up, then leaped off the bed to investigate. I was a little spooked: had someone crawled in the window without my knowledge? I decided it was a ghost, so I sat up and turned on the light. Thatch was back in the cat tree, Annabelle returned to bed, Stella crawled into bed with me, and I turned off the light. Around 1:00, I was wakened by the thud of something falling onto the floor.
-
My first reaction was Thatch had fallen out of the cat tree, so I turned on the light to see if he were okay. He was still asleep in the cat tree and I still do not know what woke me. I slept fine after that until 4:00 or so, when Thatch jumpled back into bed with me.
-
I had several dreams, one I sorta remember about working at the Drama Book Shop.
-
Good morning, friends.
-
And others.
-
A really lousy night of sleep - not more than 4 hours.
-
.
-
Who decides these things?
-
In some parts, tonight is "Devil's Night," or the "trick" part of "trick or treat."
-
Then there's this:
-
There was a "Halloween Blizzard" here back in 1991, with 2 feet of snow.
-
Good morning.
-
I had a similar ghost experience a few months ago, Elmore.
-
I distinctly heard a voice coming from a few feet away next to me. Where the wireless weather thing is that the kids gave us.
-
I am very paranoid about things, and I refuse to have one of those Alexa things in my house listening to me. So it couldn't have been that.
-
(Another Vixmom-style story)
-
I don't remember now what the voice said, but I heard it say "Laura" and then another phrase after that.
-
I am anxiously awaiting the next panel
-
I looked all around. The weather thing didn't have a microphone or a speaker, so we couldn't figure out what it was. Next to that is our outdoor security camera monitor, which also has to microphone or speaker. Same with the printer.
-
Next to the table, on the floor, was a basket of toys. One of them was a Buzz Lightyear toy that talks when you push a button. I went through every one of his phrases ... nothing like what I heard.
-
(Disappointing conclusion ahead.)
-
It turned out to be a firetruck that one of the neighbor kids turned on when he was here. One of the phrases was "Ladder goes up and down."
-
What an amazing story, though, Laura!
-
But, man, hearing a voice when you are alone in a room is spooky.

Elmore, hearing a squeak and a thud in the night when all the cats are accounted for is freaky.
-
That was a good story and not at all disappointing!
-
And I realize that my phone tracks and listens to me.
-
And I don't like that.
-
And also, there's that chip in the Covid shot ....
-
JUST KIDDING.
-
A cold front came through a couple of days ago, and the weather has cooled down nicely. Maybe our triple-digit heat is over for a few months now.
-
Good morning, all.
-
There was a "Halloween Blizzard" here back in 1991, with 2 feet of snow.
Must have been like what we had here in 2011 in terms of damage, unless that area didn't have the number and density of trees like this part of the world.
-
It is 61 degrees here headed for 82 degrees they say.
-
I have my days mixed up....I keep thinking it is Tuesday.
Of course this Saturday is the Reading Day at the bookstore so two of my sisters and I will be heading over there.
-
I paid some bills yesterday, too.
But nothing like what will be due once the calendar turns.
-
I talked to my 80 year old aunt - my mother's youngest sister - the only aunt/uncle I have surviving at this time.
She told me how much better my life is going to be if Trump gets back into office and that the only way he can lose is if the other side stuffs the ballot box - which they always do....
I just said we'll see......

My question for ASK BK DAY.....I think I know the answer from his books:
Did you take a typing class in high school?
Question for other DRs as well.....
I took two years of typing and really didn't think I would use the skill much in later life.....but with the rise of the computer it is a skill that I use everyday....opposed to say geometry and algebra.
-
DR Laura, I was prepared to steal "Ladder Goes Up and Down" for the title of an exciting chapter in my memoirs, but I shall probably have to settle for "Disappointing Conclusion Ahead" as having the ring of truth actually called for.
-
JUST KIDDING.

60 degrees going up to 74 today here.

Tomorrow (Thursday) and Friday going up to 79 and 78.

Thursday and Friday could have been two posts.
Got to get the hang of the productive HHW posting style.

When I was a tyke I taught myself to type fairly speedily with two fingers of each hand on my mother's ancient typewriter. Years later in high school I took a semester of typing and was amazed and excited to learn about the home keys and all, and I quickly became one of the best in the class. Years later still, I had a job in L.A. typing insane parts numbers and such into catalogs, for which we had to be proficient across the entire keyboard (letters, numbers, symbols, all of it), and I was eventually passing typing tests on IBM Selectrics at 110 WPM with one or two errors.
Now I sit here pecking out this post on an iPad with one finger. Ah, progress!
-
Wow, Chas. That's amazing. I only ever got to 80 wpm.
-
I was a court reporter, though, and could record two-speaker Question and Answer dialogue at 240 wpm. Different machine, though.
-

Do tell! I know nothing about them, but I've long been totally fascinated with that whole process.
When I worked at Litton Industries corporate headquarters in Beverly Hills (late 1970s), there was one (count 'em) male secretary to one of the executives. He had been a court reporter, and he continued using his steno machine (is that what it's called?) on the job there in all matters of dictation. I always loved that.

Housework finished. Now I wait to hear from Joshie.

But, man, hearing a voice when you are alone in a room is spooky.
Tell me about it! I hear a voice calling my name once in a great while. It sounds like my deceased mom, too.
Never quite sure if I dreamed it or if it woke me up.
-
When I first awakened this morning, it was quite foggy. Couldn't tell if the sky was cloudy or not.
The sun has been beaming brightly since the fog burned off, so it looks to be a glorious day.

All of these libraries and bookstores have Reading Day. I don’t get it. It’s a fine industrial town and a renowned railroad, but whole days dedicated to it? Please!
-
They stopped teaching typing when I was in school, but in a computer class you’d learn it via a typing tutorial program. I missed all of that. But when I was stuck working for a morally bankrupt and fraudulent “literary agent” in central NJ, I decided to use my time to teach myself to type properly. Best outcome.

A Question for BK:
I just happened to come across Jerome Kern Revisited, Vol. IV (https://castalbums.org/recordings/Jerome-Kern-Revisited-Vol-4-1983-Various-Artists/8767/) on CastAlbums.com, but it's not listed for sale on Kritzerland.com, even on the "Entire Catalog Listing (including Sold Out titles) (http://www.kritzerland.com/home.htm)" page. Is it not available/allowed to be reissued, or was something else preventing Kritzerland from being able to release it?

Wow I think DR CHAS SMITH wins the typing award at HHW.
I think the fastest I ever got was about 95 or 96 WPM.

DR LAURA I didn't know you had been a court reporter.

-
Wednesday afternoon greetings! We just returned from lunch at Cafe 210, the dining room in our community’s apartment building.
-
Thank you to BK and DRs ChasSmith, John G, Jeanne, Jane, and George for the kind words about my friend Rebecca.
-
Typing was what kept Richard from being sent to Vietnam as an Army enlistee in 1968. He stayed in Germany as a clerk.
-
Another typing story: it was offered as a course in what was called the “secretarial science” department on the Miami campus where my career began. You could take it for 5 weeks for 1 credit hour, 10 weeks for 2, and the full semester for 3. When personal computing began and it was imperative to know the keyboard, enrollment for 1 credit hour soared and it was mostly men.
-
And the Dean of our campus feigned disinterest in computers because, I suspect, he didn’t want to reveal that he couldn’t type.
-
I'm up, I'm up - seven hours of sleep.
-
Jrand - never took a typing class, but I've become very proficient over the years.
-
George, if memory serves, Jerome Kern IV was an LP release that only had a handful of new tracks, coupled with stuff he'd already released. We included the new tracks on our other volumes, so a Kern IV was pointless.

-
Typing was what kept Richard from being sent to Vietnam as an Army enlistee in 1968. He stayed in Germany as a clerk.
It's also what kept my dad from going into combat in World War II while stationed in the South Pacific.
-
I took a typing class in school since I was interested in writing. That turned out to be a great choice for someone who became a software engineer!
-
Typing:
I learned to type in "Radioman A School" in Bainbridge, MD, in September-October 1970 right after Navy boot camp.
Of all the ratings I qualified for, that was the one that interested me the least, but I was determined to do my best.
The first order of business was teaching all of us how to type. Some already knew and were given piddling duties to perform until the rest of us caught up.
The odd thing was that all the keys were capitals. We never learned to shift, but we were taught the QWERTY method.
Minimum speed for entering school was 60 wpm. As the classes progressed, over a week or so, I got up to 90 wpm. It's not hard to get there if you don't have to shift. AND, we didn't learn the numbers row, for some reason.
Another strange thing is that we needed typing in order to learn Morse Code. We learned out dits and dahs over a week and then began the testing to see how accurately we could type out the code into words at faster transmission speeds. The faster and more accurate we got, the further up in the class we were seated until, in the final week of code, I was in the number 2 position. Sadly, I never heard or typed code again after that school.
The guy who was in the number 1 position was sent on to specialized training to type and transmit code. Turns out there were limited opportunities for that, and whatever gift I had for it was unnecessary after the school was over.
No, after learning how to do air-to-ground communications, and how to operate teletype keyboards and cut messages onto teletype tapes, I finished third in my class of 60 and was sent to Naval Air Station, Jacksonville FL. My first two weeks were spent cleaning passageways and toilets in the Message Center and buffing the floors.
Yes, life was grand. After that demonstration of my gifts, I was allowed into the Message Center where I learned to operate mimeograph machines in order to print out and distribute messages. It was a multiple mimeo machine operation, and we processed thousands of messages a day. I was also taught how to make coffee for everyone in my duty section and got to hone my buffing skills once a week in weekly "field day" activities.
I did get a promotion off a test. As a 3rd class petty officer, I made enough money to go out and see a movie in a civilian movie theater until, of course, Admiral Zumwalt began his modernization of the Navy and convinced Congress that the military was way overdue for a pay increase. It wasn't all Zumwalt. The Joint Chiefs of Staff convinced Congress and my payday increased significantly...more than triple what it had been (which was at Korean war levels until 1971-72).
Two most strange and wonderful things happened to me in late 72 and early 73: First, the powers-that-were needed a sailor in the shop to learn to operate a top secret cryptography unit. They picked me, and got me a top secret-cryptologic security clearance. I learned what I needed to do, but it was a very rare occasion when something required that sort of decryption. The second thing was that a friend in our personnel office told me that a rating I had wanted but had been "closed" (a closed rating was fully manned) when I was trying to find a career field (before they picked the Radioman one for me) had suddenly been opened and was classified as critical. What that meant was that new positions had been created as part of Zumwalt's modernization. I "ran a request chit" through my chain of command requesting I be cross-trained from Radioman to the rating of "Journalist".
Trust me when I say the request chit was not well-received. My first one was torn up by the leading petty officer. But he was told that my request MUST be forwarded rather than disregarded under new rules Zumwalt had introduced. I needed to run that request through five people, including the Message Center Commander. They all denied my request, and I was told there was no chance the Navy would entrust me with new training when thousands of dollars had been spent on my training and the specialized security status.
Still, I delivered my chit to the Commanding officer's secretary, hoping against hope that he might consider it.
A day or two later, I was summoned to the CO's office. His secretary bade me to sit down, and then a set of saloon doors opened, and the CO invited me into his office.
We talked for about 15 minutes. We had coffee, and he gave me an assignment: Write a page or two on why I wanted to be a journalist and bring it by his office.
That night, i drafted my treatise in ink and re-copied it a couple of times until it was legible.
Next morning, I dropped it off and reported for work.
I'm not sure how much time passed. Must have been a few days, but I got a summons to the CO's office, and his secretary smiled and handed me my request chit. All the disapprovals by my Message Center seniors had been changed to "Approved". I returned to the Message Center, heart pounding, and was denied entry. One of my co-workers told me to wait, and returned with a message and said "Read it".
I was accepted into and was assigned "Journalist A School" at Fort Benjamin Harrison IN to cross-train. Until my reporting date, I was reassigned to the NAS Jacksonville Public Affairs Office.
Journalism was my career in the Navy, and it covered a lot of ground. I edited newspapers, taught journalism for five years, did radio shows, TV news, served as station manager of the military TV/radio station in Naples, Italy, etc. etc.
Have gotten off track, sorry to say. It was in Journalism A School where I needed to re-learn how to type, using shift keys and numbers, too. Happily, my previous all-caps speed helped me meet the school's criteria.
My friend for many years was an IBM Selectric II typewriter. I rather miss typing on those wonderful machines, but they never had auto-correct and could be a bit unforgiving at times.

Most interesting DR RON PULLIAM.

Tonight on TCM beginning at 8 p.m. EST - Psycho followed by Peeping Tom.

It's Wednesday here in the CSRA.
It is almost dusk, as well.

We have Halloween events, locally, tomorrow evening. One event is in downtown Johnston and one is in Edgefield at the Courthouse Square. The events are called "Trunk-or-Treat". No one goes door-to-door like we did when I was a kid...lo! those many decades ago!

Did I miss DR Ginny's repor on CONCLAVE?
No, I hadn’t said anything yet. It was the first time Richard and I had been to a movie theatre together since before the pandemic. I’d been with girlfriends to see “Barbie” and he and Rob went to see something when we were all in Michigan in August.
-
We enjoyed the movie, which has quite a “rut roh” moment at the end. It gave us a lot to talk about over the nice dinner we had afterwards at Bravo Italian Cucina.
-
Thanks, DR Ginny!
-
I may read the novel before watching the movie. I'm happy to wait until I can stream it, I think.
