I can't believe your mother did go to sleep after all that.

George I am not a big believer waiting at a hospital and agree with your decision to leave.
Yup. My mom is a retired nurse and very practical. She knows how long things take, and doesn't want us there just for the sake of being there.
-
I can't believe your mother did go to sleep after all that.
Something like this happened to my sister when we were in Seattle more than 20 years ago. She also felt fine afterwards, so we went to IKEA and she had no problems.
-
Wow. Lucky people.
-
DR Jeanne I hope you are ok.

Here's one for the books - a signed photo from the Merrily We Roll Along session - note Sondheim on the extreme left. The only problem is - I have NEVER EVER signed this photo and the only way anyone could have GOTTEN this photo is to grab it from Facebook. That's it. Now, a year ago I got several requests to sign plain white cards from "fans" who wanted to share with their friends. I did two before checking online and finding it was a scam. And here is the result. And their selling this as if I signed THIS photo. How they get my signature on there is unknown but it's probably easy as pie. https://www.ebay.com/itm/267107107134?_trkparms=amclksrc%3DITM%26aid%3D1110006%26algo%3DHOMESPLICE.SIM%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20231107084023%26meid%3Dbd6515627d004b5b8e4476f9d7c28a51%26pid%3D101875%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D4%26sd%3D276775022730%26itm%3D267107107134%26pmt%3D1%26noa%3D0%26pg%3D2332490%26algv%3DSimVIDwebV3WithCPCExpansionEmbeddingSearchQueryRecallAuctionPushout&_trksid=p2332490.c101875.m1851&itmprp=cksum%3A267107107134bd6515627d004b5b8e4476f9d7c28a51%7Cenc%3AAQAJAAABQM%252BSIK5LCqs2uiCwInhHqGVzIMLIMo0iPltG%252Fc%252FV8dzqXG8bAAbTVw985HbdYTuG2wPTDx%252F8lbe8GSu4NUrsEPcDBvCLFhf2QkBmtTX5yUHK1xN8yVTwcC2Ss8jOYtze2a5aAJnKXKYmyb8Nd67bFxt60DcvtFQVJgyzGVNHrwPTGz%252B6muUbGTm3MmL8A4SA21BTZv5t319IjkB4Jkpc2t2a1GYg25vxnzJXsZz%252FnDFnDmrNLAO6MIJmOxxQQ6L%252BrLoCfaUbk5XxIOIkbF%252FCxqlMa3hYUFQqV82eNC5YaFIkXGH3O%252BBvXOVMriVNOP%252B9xXgjGAJIrVE6qgOfJLxCXB0B1%252FolGO9Vn7%252FORFfXW5T5KNz4%252BhLyJuURQ6WoSAGTVDdrt9Wdi91yNd8E1bRvCNHOuQmhMsEl2DB9BEyHEzYW%7Campid%3APL_CLK%7Cclp%3A2332490&itmmeta=01JH2SNH1HS932GAG89XGC9X67

In other news, one of my biggest annoyances with Paramount and The First Nudie Musical is that we are the ONLY Paramount film I know of that did not have a lobby card set. Posters, yes. Lobbies, NEVER. Well, just before bed tonight I happened to search Nudie on Ebay and guess what I found? For the Australian release of the movie they did a full set of lobby cards - and I just bought them :)
-
I have written the two sellers who are hawking that fake photo and warned them that'I'll be contacting eBay tomorrow and directing them to these bogus items.
-
Good morning, all!

I slept well. When I woke around 4:00, thew Tom Paxton song "Willie Seton" was running through my head.

Don't order your checks through the Bradford Exchange - you are then enrolled in some kind of subscription plan and charged $16.95 a month.
I finally got it canceled after 4 emails and two telephone calls. We shall see if it really worked at the end of the month.

And the wind it windeth every day.

Yes, please.

These fires are unthinkable.
It seems like every year they (the fires) find new territories to ravage.
-
The winds sound like they're possibly even more severe than they are in many years and many Santa Anas.
Or it's just where they've hit this time. Has the Palisades ever been under direct attack like this? I certainly recall fires out that way, but never so close into town. Or I'm just forgetting. But I don't remember any such evacuation orders in these parts.
-
We're under a wind attack here, too, on the opposite coast. It started after our light "snow event" Monday, and yesterday and even through the nights they've just been scary. Tomorrow's supposed to be just as severe, if not more so, before this lets up. I'm fast becoming an enemy of severe winds. Who wrote the short horror story about the guy fearful of the wind? Bradbury, right?
-
I think I read the winds will be coming for days.
-
There’s a broken wind joke in there somewhere, but I am too classy and too tired to go there.
-
Well, okay, just too tired.
-
Onward!

The wind it was howlin’ and the snow was outrageous.

DR Jane, have you heard from your family in L.A. this morning?
I hope that they are safe, and that their homes were not damaged.
-
My friends in Santa Monica were placed under a mandatory evacuation order shortly after I posted about them last night.
A large part of Santa Monica heading in the direction of Brentwood evacuated shortly before midnight.
-
One thing I never worried about living in Santa Monica was fire.
Earthquakes yes, but not fire.

I love Topanga Canyon and Malibu, but never lived in those areas because of the threat of fires.
There was a restaurant in Topanga Canyon where I would always take out of town guests, The Inn Of The Seventh Ray. Extremely beautiful, and quintessential L.A.

I’m early for my noon interview. It’s too cold to walk around.
-
Hello, everyone.
-
An update:
We’d been told that yesterday would be very windy, with possible gusts up to 100 mph, and, of course, we all know of the potential for fires. But this happened so quickly. I was driving home from a doctor’s appointment about 2 pm yesterday when I saw the huge billows of smoke to the west. By last night the mandatory evacuation zone was down to San Vicente Blvd, with evacuation warnings down to Montana Ave. That’s Brentwood and Santa Monica, not Pacific Palisades. The evacuation zone is HUGE.

-
Oh, and did I mention the sirens? Not quite to the 9/11 level, but eerily reminiscent.
-
I have a few things I need I need to take care of, but will be back later to catch up.

One of my daughter’s voice teachers lived in Topanga Canyon.
I would sit on her deck and listen to the coyotes.
Her husband had built a theater on their property, mostly designed for plays by Shakespeare.

Will Geer’s outdoor theater is also in Topanga Canyon.
I hope it was saved…I have many fond memories of attending plays there.
From Wikipedia:
Set in the natural amphitheater of a mountain canyon, the Theatricum Botanicum is traditionally used for performances of William Shakespeare's plays, as well as modern plays and music concerts.

Last night I tuned to the FLIX movie channel that's right next to TCM on our cable service. They were showing The Two Jakes, the "sequel" to Chinatown one always wishes were better, and it just doesn't live up to what it should be. But I can never not watch it when I come upon it, so I saw the last half hour and fell asleep near the end.
I woke up a bit later to the next movie, Hannibal Rising, the one Hannibal Lecter entry I'd never paid the slightest attention to. I shouldn't judge something when I wake up in the middle of it, but it truly seemed to be of no redeeming social value.

Ask BK:
And other Angelenos who might remember:
Café Swiss - 450 N. Rodeo, according to a matchbook I saw online. Who ate there, and did you have the Hot Swiss Cheese and Onion Pie?
In the late 70s when I was working a few blocks over at Litton Industries headquarters, coworkers introduced me to the restaurant and to this dish, which I thought was to die for. We went there to have it for lunch on any number of occasions. Something recently made me think of it, and I've been looking online for recipes that look and sound as close to what I remember as possible. It's probably pretty simple to make, but it's got to be "right".

One of my daughter’s voice teachers lived in Topanga Canyon.
I would sit on her deck and listen to the coyotes.
Her husband had built a theater on their property, mostly designed for plays by Shakespeare.
There’s the Will Geer Theater out there too. Hope the fires don’t go that far!
-
I've been watching the fire coverage on MSNBC.
-
Will Geer’s outdoor theater is also in Topanga Canyon.
I hope it was saved…I have many fond memories of attending plays there.
From Wikipedia:
Set in the natural amphitheater of a mountain canyon, the Theatricum Botanicum is traditionally used for performances of William Shakespeare's plays, as well as modern plays and music concerts.
Oops, catching up and I see you already mentioned this. There is a really cool antique and kitschy clothing store we love along there too.
-
Last night I watched the first two episodes of a PBS seruies from several years ago, Mercy Street. I'm enjoying it.

DR Chas, voila!
Let me know what time to arrive for a sample.😊
Cafe Swiss Cheese and Onion Pie
2 1/2 cups grated Swiss cheese
3 eggs beaten
8 oz. half and half
1 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons butter
1 box of chopped white onionsj
3 tablespoons butter
1 deep dish pie crust
Heat oven to 375.
Spread 3 T. butter in crust.
Beat eggs. Add half and half and salt.
Saute onions in remaining 3 T. butter for 10 minutes.
Place all of onions in crust.
Top with cheese.
Pour egg mixture over.
Bake for 50 minutes or until golden brown.
-
I remember that matchbook.
Red with gold letters, I recall.
-
Taking a break now. Had a bagel, cream cheese, and lox so far but need something else at some point.
-
Nothing too much.
-
I did have to take forty minutes to research some stuff - and found something that's helpful that I never knew about.
-
Are the food places near you delivering despite the fires?
-
Good choice!
-
This afternoon on SCREENPIX I watched a Sonja Henie movie title It's A Pleasure.....only it wasn't.

BK, glad to hear that your auditions went well. Surprised that so many people came out, with the windy wind and all.
I was also surprised.

Don't order your checks through the Bradford Exchange - you are then enrolled in some kind of subscription plan and charged $16.95 a month.
I finally got it canceled after 4 emails and two telephone calls. We shall see if it really worked at the end of the month.
Thanks for the warning. I hope your problem has been solved.

I remember smaller fires there and people who had to evacuate were able to quickly return. I could be wrong. I don't know that the Santa Ana winds have ever been this fierce, at least from what some friends have said. I'm sure they are worse than what I have experienced in the past.
-
SIX!

I think I read the winds will be coming for days.
Yes, but when will not be this strong.

The Café Swiss was one of the many incredibly wonderful establishments that made B.H. the veritable "village" it was when I knew it.
-
DR Jane, have you heard from your family in L.A. this morning?
I hope that they are safe, and that their homes were not damaged.
Thank you. My brother has been great about sending updates. My nephew still doesn't know if he has a home. He reached friends that lost their homes. It really will be a miracle if he does have a home to return to.
-
My brother is still on an evacuation warning. His son and family are thinking of going out of the area for now. I'm guessing friends invited them. My brother said he will not go with them and stay home unless he is told to evacuate.
-
My friends in Santa Monica were placed under a mandatory evacuation order shortly after I posted about them last night.
A large part of Santa Monica heading in the direction of Brentwood evacuated shortly before midnight.
I checked on friends who, for now, are just outside the Santa Monica evacuation. My brother is in Brentwood.
-
One thing I never worried about living in Santa Monica was fire.
Earthquakes yes, but not fire.
I know. I can't believe it will reach my brother.
-
Shockingly HUGE, with the surrounding areas on high alert.
-
I’m a few miles away. I doubt it’ll get to my ‘hood, but I felt “on alert” last night, checking updates and such. Like bk, we had electricity interruptions, but they didn’t last long. By the time I reached the kitchen where I keep the emergency lantern the power was back on.
I usually turn my phone off before I go to bed to avoid wrong numbers and Amber Alerts, but last night I kept it on and also kept a flashlight next to my bed.
I'm glad you are keeping your phone on at night.
-
Oh, and did I mention the sirens? Not quite to the 9/11 level, but eerily reminiscent.
I didn't think about that :(

Stay safe vibes for Jeanne and BK

Here's another question o' the day for anyone who'd like to jump in, and this one's kind of wide open:
What would you say are the "essential" World War II movies? The ones that are not only well made (however you wish to define that), but which have something essential to say and/or portray about the war. They can be famous ones from the forties or fifties, or more contemporary ones that look back from a later vantage point. I'm all ears.

Wednesday evening greetings! Having been marooned because the plows that took care of our street left a mountain of snow at the end of our driveway, we were glad to see another crew last night. They worked until midnight and Richard was able to make it to an appointment he had this morning.

George I am not a big believer waiting at a hospital and agree with your decision to leave.
Yup. My mom is a retired nurse and very practical. She knows how long things take, and doesn't want us there just for the sake of being there.

From a Criterion email about director Richard Linklater:
Nouvelle Vague will be Linklater’s twenty-second feature, and he wrapped production on his twenty-third last fall. Blue Moon stars Ethan Hawke as lyricist Lorenz Hart; Bobby Cannavale as his songwriting partner, Richard Rodgers; and Andrew Scott as Oscar Hammerstein II. Written by novelist Robert Kaplow (Me and Orson Welles), Blue Moon also stars Margaret Qualley.
-
Interesting casting, though I think Hawke is way too tall.

Same email:
Bernard Rose calls his Lear Rex a “radical but accessible adaptation of Shakespeare’s greatest play.” Al Pacino stars as the aging and raging king, and the supporting cast includes Jessica Chastain as Goneril, Ariana DeBose as Cordelia, Rachel Brosnahan as Regan, LaKeith Stanfield as Edmund, and Peter Dinklage as the Fool.
-
And finally:
Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas face off in John Carney’s Power Ballad, a musical comedy about a wedding singer, a rock star, and the song that comes between them. Jesse Eisenberg will soon begin production on an untitled musical comedy starring Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti. The story will center on a shy woman who blooms when she’s cast in a musical being staged by a local community theater. And Geremy Jasper (Patti Cake$) directs Sadie Sink, Regina Hall, and Kelly Macdonald in O’Dessa, a postapocalyptic rock opera about a farm girl on an epic quest.

Wednesday evening greetings! Having been marooned because the plows that took care of our street left a mountain of snow at the end of our driveway, we were glad to see another crew last night. They worked until midnight and Richard was able to make it to an appointment he had this morning.
I hate when the snow crews leave snow at the end of the driveway. I used to have to shovel four feet of it when we lived in Massachusetts. The snow from the plows is packed down more making it harder to shovel.

Then I did the Lambada (The Forbidden Dance).

“Recently I was craving the Cheese and Onion Pie from Cafe Swiss the long-gone restauran once located at 450 Rodeo Drive. I used to eat there with my Nana and Papa Warner and always ordered the same thing. Cafe Swiss originally opened in 1950 and closed in 1985. The beautiful back patio was the scene of many wonderful lunches for me and my grandparents. The continental fare was peppered with some typical Swiss dishes and the Cheese and Onion pie has remained in my heart (and probably arteries too) forever. Here is the recipe. Enjoy!”

Enjoy!”
What a lovely memory.
-
I did get snowed in once in Sedona, but the snow melts quickly there.

Yum.

I'm waiting for an update. It is possible there isn't any new news to report.
Major vibes for family and friends of DR Jane, and everyone affected by these terrible fires.
Please keep us updated, Jane.
Thank you and I will.

That sounds like an excellent plan.

It really is, although not mine.
I wish that I had been raised in California.
I knew that I wanted to move there from the age of 8!
Would have been lovely to have grown up there with family members.

Yes, cold but not Baltimore cold.
-
And Sedona is beautiful.

It’s a tough decision, but I’m leaning towards it.

Having the beach close by was fun.

I have many fun childhood, and a few as an adult, memories there.
:(
-
And Sedona is beautiful.
I agree.
There is no such thing as Uber there, however, and I haven’t driven in 7 years!
-
My heart will always be in Southern California.
-
Leaving for a bit to check the news.

Vibes to all for everything.
TTFN.
Sending vibes to you, Jeanne.

That sounds like a good option, if you decide to do it there.

Starting Gypsy with Imelda Staunton. I’m not sold on her performance. It’s too much schmacting. Might have worked better in the theater. In the back balcony.

This is unheard of:
Latest evacuation zone: Hollywood U.S.A.
My first place in L.A. is in the zone that extends south to Hollywood Blvd. Hell, my last place is just a few blocks south of the zone in West Hollywood. This includes the Blvd. and all that's on it (the Chinese, the Pantages), the Magic Castle, the Hollywood Bowl and Mulholland Drive, Whitley Heights and the High Tower apts. and so many more unique places.
-
Thank you for all of that info, DR DR Iris!
-
I guess this Hollywood fire started in Runyon Canyon.
-
Gratuitous post 325!

From 1966-1971 I grew up in Palos Verdes Estates (now Rancho Palos Verdes). It was an idyllic childhood.
-
That is south of downtown.

So much devastation.

One more.

I remember that!
Lots of unique and fun little stores in that area, which I explored in the late 70’s.
-
Imelda's Rose's Turn is probably the worst I have ever seen. All anger and nothing deeper. Full of noise and fury signifying nothing.
-
The next Billy Wilder will be one of the worst: The Emperor Waltz with Bing Crosby.
-
Good night, all.

Will Rogers historical park, including his home, burned down :(
Oh, no. :(

The son-in-law of a friend of mine is driving, along with two other firefighters, his fire truck from Colorado to LA to help out.
Wow! Hope the long drive is an easy one!
-
Vibes to LA peeps and those who have people there. It’s scary.
-
The question is - WHAT started the fire in Runyon Canyon.
-
So nice to see all the Iris posts - very glad she's here.
-
I've written thirteen pages today.
-
And yet we're not on page thirteen here.
-
But we will be, oh, yes, we will be.
-
Don't know where, don't know when.
-
I'll try to write another two or three after posting notes.

Enter page thirteen.

Amazing.
-
Lots of helicopters flying tonight.
-
I will be finishing a chapter for sure - just a few paragraphs away from doing that. Then tomorrow, I have to do more research and make some notes about upcoming things I need to get ready for.
-
Guess I'll write some notes.
-
Just because I can.
-
I've had two bagels, one burger, some fries.
-
I could make a salami sandwich but I'm thinking about that tempura I had the other night - so light and calorie friendly, and with veggies.
-
I'll think about that as I'm writing some damn notes.
-
And I will be writing some damn notes.

14 pages! That’s how we do.
-
Bruce how far are you from the Studio City fire?
-
How far is BK’s old Studio City place?
-
It’s hard to envision the scope of this in my mind. And I am allergic to tv news.
-
Gratuitous Post #400!! :D
-
Sounds like they’ve contained the fire in Studio City.
-
G! Watch me, I’m approaching a big millstone.
-
Get a load of me!
-
Nearly 11,000 posts spread over 20-some years. Each a nugget of brilliance and/or incoherence.
-
I haven't heard about a Studio City fire. I'm probably two or three miles from my Studio City house.
-
I'll have to check out where it is.
-
Rodzinski is about to have a nice new posting plateau.
-
And I'll be here to capture it, since George is nowhere to be seen at the moment.
-
The Studio City fire was actually way south of Ventura Blvd. behind Fryman Canyon, where there are houses on stilts. It started IN a house, which makes you wonder what the cause was - we never seem to get that information - but the fire is out.
-
Thankfully.
-
Lots of brush there, so it's good they got it out, but I want to understand what in that house, that four-story house CAUSED the fire. Certainly if it started inside, it wasn't the wind. And I was just outside and there is zero wind, at least here in the Oaks of Sherman.
-
Where in the HELL is George?
-
Oh, he WAS here three minutes ago.
-
New notes are written. I kept them short.
-
WWII movies I dig?
The Bridge at Remagen
Back Door to Hell which is a pretty cool early Jack Nicholson movie starring Jimmie “Honeycomb” Rodgers
Between Heaven and Hell with Robert Wagner and Buddy Ensenada
PT 109
The Fighting Sullivans
-
Sometimes one must.
-
Ok let me do this.
-
I do think page fifteen is in our future, which means I definitely have to write two more pages of the book to match the page count.
-
DO IT.
-
This is my final post as an under-11,000-post person.
-
Enter page fifteen!
-
And here it is. Glory be!
-
Drum roll for Rodzinski.
-
And here is the living proof. Night of the Living Proof.
-
Thank you. I am honored.
-
THAT is rather large.
-
Very, very large.
-
The computer is being VERY ornery tonight. Not time to do the crash since we had one only a few days ago.
-
Maybe it's the windy wind that isn't a windy wind.
-
Maybe it's the memory of the windy wind.
-
I like when Jane is here for the late-night postings.
-
And why did George disappear into the ether?
-
Gone with the windy wind is he.
-
Not very sporting.
-
Thank you also for The Creature Wasn’t Nice, which was the impetus for me ever finding this spot and is what I consider life-giving comedy.
-
In less than 100 posts, I can do the five 1s.
-
:)
-
How come that smiling emoji is so TINY.
-
Though some of you have already done six 1s.
-
That should be a BIG smiling emoji.
-
Supersize.
-
Tiny emotions.
-
Persnickety is what this here computer is being.
-
I think there should be a candy bar called Persnickety.
-
450 gets us another page!

New notes are up.
-
Up are new notes.

Sounds like they’ve contained the fire in Studio City.
I just came across this video short:
PERFECT Water Drop EXTINGUISHES FIRE in Hollywood Hills (https://www.youtube.com/shorts/9FmxFckNM0U)
-
I've seen them.
-
I've read them.
-
Watchamacallit is a good bar. Or was.
-
I wrote them.

Enter page sixteen!
-
Quite the posting day.
-
Suite 16.
-
I still want to know the CAUSE of the fire in that Studio City house.
-
Where in the HELL is George?
I went down the rabbit hole of videos of the California fires.
-
There could be a fire in Studio City on any day, perhaps this was magnified.
