Well, crap. My internet isn't working! I'm posting here from my phone, but I was working on stuff on my desktop computer and the wired internet connection is no longer connecting to the internet! WTH?? :o
-
I don't know if it fixed itself or what, but my internet is back (it came back about an hour and a half ago ::) )...but more importantly, what the heck am I still doing up?? :o I have no idea, but I must rectify that situation.
Have a good day, all!

Good morning.

Good morning, DR Laura.

I was up early because we got ourselves yet another dusting last night, just enough that if I didn't blow it off the driveway this morning it would be pressed down into a sheet of ice. I tried for a while but finally just gave up and went to dleep

Finishing the hat vibes for MR BK.

It is 27 degrees headed for 45 degrees today. Then starting on Sunday we're back in the deep freeze again.
I'm heading to the getting place to get some things so I don't have to go out next week.
And I will be home in plenty of time for the Home Health visit.

Good morning, all!

I was feeling a mite puny last night, so I went to bed just after 8:00 and slept until 7:00 this morning. I only got out of bed because Annabelle and Thatch were playing too exuberantly and one of them ended up on my nightstand. knocking to the floor and in all directions a bottle of water, my cell phone, and my glasses.
-
The neighbor above me in 4C called yesterday afternoon. She is coming to visit this afternoon. I hope she's not coming to complain about the noise.

DR vixmom, are you going to post that photo?

Yes, today is the actual day. Thanks to all for last night’s wishes.

For Popeye the Sailor Man Day! we may have mentioned this previously, but with the character of Popeye having first appeared in 1929, the character is now in the public domain in the U.S.
-
If I understand the 95-year copyright rule, anything first published in 1929 is in public domain for the U.S. as of Jan. 1 2025.
-
Good morning, all.

More anniversary wishes for Ginny and Richard!

Had a weird dream about watching a Criterion set on Art Nouveau with a friend (I think it was my friend Deborah), but all I saw of her was a pair of cowboy boots that looked like pineapples or agave plants on the outside.
-
Been reading a lot of bad reviews of Show/Boat. It sounds dreadful, but the writers are showing themselves to be ignorant as well as unimpressed. The production is happening because the original show is now in the public domain. The producers don't have to pay for it. Yet in his one-star review, David Finkle seemed obsessed with songs written for later productions or the film not being included. Well, duh. They're not copyright-free.
-
I'm tired. I may fall back asleep.

Joan Plowright has died. She was wonderful in Enchanted April.

DR Laura I want to read more about your fire yesterday and what caused it :-\
-
LOL. Well, it's not one of the ones with the basket -- it is rectangular-shaped like a microwave.
-
I set it to preheat. Then when I went to check on it, there was a fire under the fat-catching rack. I put the rack near the bottom, and I think something paper must have been stuck under it.
-
That's the second air fryer I've ruined. The first one was too close to a hot burner and it melted.

My DH may be the one to cook with air fryers after this. I can't be trusted.

Happy Happily Ever After, Ginny and Fr. Richard!

I got a call a few minutes ago to cover for the speaker at a birding festival in southern Arizona tomorrow morning. So I guess I'll be off shortly for a quick overnight stay in southern Arizona. The speaker is ill.

After reporting BJ's price going up from $2.54 to $2.61, I drove by it this morning and it's $2.63.
That's $2.78 for you non-BJ-credit-card-holders.
-
I just had my first bit of good news in weeks: The University of North Carolina School of the Arts wants to stage the Dreamland sequence (Act Two, Scene Two) from the ballet. Now I hope something good happens with Annabelle & Thatch and that damned Appalachian CD.

Maybe because people like Elmore think that version is a crime.

Interesting. A few weeks ago I was surprised to read that Ray Bradbury's books were in the public domain.

Is there a source for the LA fires that lets you know if certain addresses in the city are in danger area......
Keith downloaded an app called Duty Watch on his phone to help us track the fires.

Indiana you know.
I first saw that version in Louisville, so you can't take a Hoosier stance.
-
He really isn't tracking it anymore as containment continues to improve.

I don't think they do, but I don't know if that change is in the public domain. Good question.

Joan Plowright has died. She was wonderful in Enchanted April.

The Aldous Huxley version of Pride and Prejudice is the one with Green Garson and Laurence Olivier. It turns Austen's magnificent heartfelt prose into almost a bubble-headed screwball comedy.

The Aldous Huxley version of Pride and Prejudice is the one with Green Garson and Laurence Olivier. It turns Austen's magnificent heartfelt prose into almost a bubble-headed screwball comedy.
Supposedly, Huxley wanted to go back to the book, but MGM said they had purchased Helen Jerome's play and to go with bthat. My biggest problem, besides setting the movie 30 years later than 1812-13 and being so coy, is making Lady Catherine de Burgh a nice person as opposed to Austen's nasty bitch
-
And Plowright was married to Olivier, so it all comes full circle.
Plowright was always wonderful. I recently saw her in a BBC broadcast of Pinter's The Birthday Party. She was so wonderful.

These mofos who live across from me - have MY address on THEIR packages - this has been going on for years. Hasn't happened recently but did today. So, I took it over there and left it on their porch. There was barely any room to walk because their cars are parked so close together and then so close to the shrubbery. Well, I took a lovely little tumble and went right down hard on both knees. And could not get up because I'm a big fat tub of lard. Now, I was not silent about my upset at losing my footing because of THEM and being their delivery boy. They were sitting at a kitchen table, clearly visible from the living room window - there's no way they did not hear me - do you think they came out to see if I was okay? Nope.
-
One knee was bleeding a little so I've got a Band-aid on that one - the other seems just to be scraped. I had nice slacks on and thankfully this didn't put a nice big hole in the knees, not to mention a new sweater that could have had damage when my elbow hit the ground. I am soooo tempted to go right back there and tell they if I EVER get a package for them with my address, it's going right in the trash.
-
I'm gonna be nice and sore tomorrow.
-
Just trying to calm down now - my irritation level is in the red and I really want to go over there and let them have it.

Hi, Freddie.
-
Yes, as of this morning the Palisades fire was 31% contained. I was in Santa Monica today and the air wasn’t noticeably bad, unlike last week when it was horrible. But I do still hear a lot of sirens, which is unsettling.
-
Things are beginning to get back to normal for those of us who still have housing. We are all still shell-shocked, though.

Vibes to all.

Hi DR Iris. How you feeling better and healing ok?
Thank you for asking, Jane.
Not feeling well, to be honest, but am determined to remain optimistic.
Very challenging.
Sending feel-better vibes, Iris!

I am myself enraged at BK’s thoughtless neighbors. Next time, get a nice steel-toed boot and kick the package off your porch with prejudice.
-
I think I would throw the packages in their yard from the street. And no further.
-
And if it is raining, so much the better.
-
Grocery run done.
-
And put away.
-
One more.

From outer space.

Anyway, sorry about your tumble, BK. I am glad it was not worse.

I thought this quilt was quite imaginative:

Wouldn't you like to try a bite of my shiny apple?

Many people don't know that in Disney's first draft of Snow White, the Wicked Witch was a cat.

Good night, friends.

And others.

My girl child brought her home reading and it was some Sleeping Beauty version from the ‘80s, maybe based on the original, I dunno. The wicked queen at some point demands her servant feed her the princess’s two babies. She eats them! Or she thinks she does. Of course the servant/chef feeds her lambs instead. Unpleasantness.
-
This morning, there was a new fraudulent transaction on it.
Sorry about that. What a pain!

I’ll second that. Truly outrageous.

That sounds like the story I remember as a kid. It was like Cronus eating his kids.

A friend cooked dinner tonight and got out the fine china. So it was a dress-up affair. She cooked pork loin and served it eith tzimmes, which was excellent. Dessert was an angel food cake with whipped cream frosting and cracked brittle on top.

Just finished an irritating documentary called This Is Ballet: Dancing Anne of Green Gables. You wade through endless backstage blather about the creation of a new ballet. Ten minutes before it’s over, they get to opening night. And what little footage they include of the ballet is presented in fast forward, so you get no serious dancing in the whole movie.
-
Need to get the bad taste of that out of my mouth. Starting Rhythm on the Range, a Bing Crosby-Mary Martin musical with a story by Billy Wilder. Directed by Victor Schertzinger.
-
It’s not very good either, but it’s occasionally fun.
-
And Mary Martin was certainly young.
-
So was fourth-billed Oscar Levant.

Ah, pork loin served with tzimmes!
The traditional Rosh Hashanah meal served in Orthodox Jewish homes.
😊 😉 😄

Seriously, John G., it sounds like a very nice dinner and evening.

Particularly for the lambs.

I did point that out. And had a good laugh.

Perhaps a lobster salad would have made it better.

I am listening to some of Pablo Neruda's poetry before bed.

Just beautiful stuff.

Onward!

Back from opening night - I really should have stayed home and written. Well, I'll write some damn notes and make them brief and then try to write for at least two hours. Definitely want to do another six pages.
-
Apparently, at some point these morons across the street put the wrong address in somewhere - and when they get packages from there they come here. I'm going to leave them a note tomorrow telling them from now on if packages come here I will have them returned. I am NEVER walking over there again.
-
Some notes and then nose to the grindstone, buckle down, Winsocki, and WRITE!
TE
-
New notes are up.
-
Up are new notes.
-
I've seen them.
-
I've read them.
-
I wrote them.
