Title: BLEARY-EYED AND VAGUELY DISCONTENTED
Post by: bk on February 11, 2025, 12:19:19 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were both bleary-eyed and vaguely discontented, and now it is time for you to post until the bleary-eyed and vaguely discontented cows come home.

I actually have a couple of days, but not when you take potential weather into consideration. We could wake up to a small amount of - (you know) - tomorrow morning, but we're even more likely to do so on Thursday morning. And that one is forecasted to be the dreaded wintry mix.

Jerome Kern songs:

So very many gorgeous songs.  My favorite of all is "They Didn't Believe Me" but in a different context from the original lyrics.  My favorite version was, IIRC, named "When They Ask Us".  It's a glorious arrangement and stunning performance.

Thanks. I have a friend whose son sometimes flies out of Scottsdale. I would have heard about it if he was involved. Other than that, I don't know anyone who flies small jets.

This is the end of Oh! What a Lovely War!. The melody is Kern's 1914 song "They'll Never Believe Me" from The Girl From Utah, and the parody lyrics are supposedly by Cole Porter.

My favorite Kern song depends on the day, I think. I love the complete scores of the Kern shows I've been lucky to work on:
Have a Heart
Oh, Boy!
Oh Lady! Lady!
Leave it to Jane
Sally
Show Boat
Sweet Adeline
Music in the air
The Cat and the Fiddle
Roberta
Very Warm for May

But two songs Mabel mercer recorded are at the top of my list:
Poor Pierrot:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPPN7US3xo0
Once in a Blue Moon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHyFGGxlzac

I started watching a set of DVDs over the weekend that could send me down a serious rabbit hole -- the 1984-1986 TV series Riptide -- only because it was filmed literally in my back yard when I was living in Redondo Beach. I'm only 7 episodes in, with nearly 50 to go (once I acquire the third season set which is ridiculously hard to find and ridiculously pricey). But in those 7 episodes, which I've rewound and slo-mo'd and freeze-framed to an extent that would drive anyone else nuts, along with having the 1984 Redondo Beach / South Bay telephone directory right by my side, I have captured and re-learned more about my mid-1980s surroundings than I would have thought possible. For the South Bay, it ranks right up there with other notable L.A. filming location resources.

Since mid-November -- because of a killer rehearsal and show schedule, then the holidays, etc. The delay wasn't planned, but it just got away from me.

First episode, I think. Not right away, Boz isn't there at first. They rescue him from a crazy-ass demonstration (in a building in Long Beach, which I hadn't known before), then he moves onto the boat and brings the robot and everything else.

I hope you feel better soon, Jane. That's the way it was when I tested positive. I'm sure since you had so many immunizations that you'll be ok. I remember being achy.

I'm usually achy and this isn't much worse.  It is more like a head cold with a somewhat sore throat and cough.  The worst part is my headache.  It was very bad most of the night.

Sending you more healthy vibes, Jane.

Thank you.

Though the date is April 1, I don’t think this is an April Fool’s joke:

Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story, the new film that spotlights Liza Minnelli's life in the 1970s, will make its PBS premiere April 1 at 9 PM ET as part of the American Masters series; check local listings. The film will also stream.

If it was that warm here I would drag myself out for a walk.

Not in the drizzle and cold winds.

Riptide was Stephen J. Cannell, post A-Team adventure crime fighter vibes like Hunter and Hardcastle and McCormick. Gotta have cool vehicles, in this case, a big, fat, pink helicopter. Then a nerdy guy with a robot to capture the kid audience. Definition of formulaic. It started kinda cool, but like A-Team, grew tiresome. It was that brand of comic book violence where nobody ever got killed in a gunfight. Perry King and Joe Penny. The slick but dark realism of Miami Vice kinda wiped this stuff off the map, eventually.

The world can continue - my WalMart had meatballs again.

On a different subject I have a meatloaf in the oven.

What a coinkydink!  At my mom's late this morning, she and I made some meatloaf in small tins to be frozen so that I could have some to bake whenever I want some.

We made five little loafs.  She only wanted one, and I took the other four.

At first, we made one test loaf that turned out quite good, so then we made the other five. :)

These are not the actual meatloafs that we made, but they seem like they're a similar size to what we made.

That's really cool, ChasSmith.

I hate it when that happens...and it's happened to my neighbors on both sides! :P

Vibes it doesn't happen to you, or to your neighbors again!

Thanks, Jane!

Bryan said we are very lucky to have covid instead of the flu as the flu has been very bad this year.  I had read that.

Yikes!  Fortunately (he said hopefully), I've had both the flu and Covid shots. :)

I really liked Cemetery Club on Broadway.

Tacoma Little Theatre did it a few years ago, and I knew a couple of the actresses.  My and Jane's (and Tom's) friend Sharry was in it. :)

A regional production of The Cemetery Club is the only play I remember walking out of at intermission.

Just had to let one of our actresses go - she'd already missed one rehearsal due to food poisoning, but her single conflict suddenly turned into five days of missed rehearsals just as we're in run-throughs - not dealing with it this time. Trying to find a replacement right now.

Oh, my goodness!  How do people think that that's even remotely acceptable?? :P

I think she, like most young people, thought we'd just deal with it. Not this time. I'd rather have one less person in the show than deal with it, frankly.

Good for you!

Totally random thought:  if Perry King married Joe Penny, he'd be Perry Penny! :))
