Well, you've read the notes, the notes are waiting patiently for the pre-order link, and now it is time for you to post until the pre-ordered cows come home.

And the word of the day is: ENRICHING!

Well, link will NOT be live and who knows for how long because Doug has refused to update the software he uses and he's on some ancient version they haven't supported for years and now it won't open at all. He said they changed things in the new version and he didn't want to learn it. Well, that's just plain silly and now this. So, I believe he'll upgrade and have to learn the new stuff, but for getting this link up he can just call them and have them talk him through it and he can write down whatever's different about it. That was my strong advice.
-
In the meantime, you dear readers can, of course, order the book the other way by just going directly to PayPal.com, clicking on "send money" and putting in the total you're sending, which is $38 (includes priority postage) for the signed copy. It's easy as pie. Just make sure your address is showing and put what it's for. Many of you have done this many times. So, go.

TOD: My current favorite hot dog is (or are?) the Pigs in a Blanket from the Brooklyn Diner on West 43rd Street near 7th Avenue. I don't know why they don't call them Franks in a Blanket, but they're made with high quality hot dogs.
I really loved Nathan's hot dogs, but just don't seem to be able to find a convenient Nathan's around here these days.
-
Iris, it was great seeing you here in last night's posts. Continued health vibes.
Thanks for the SNL report.
-
Here's the musical from the SNL show about 50 years of New York
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8GbTZ8v1-w
Given today's HHW TOD, is it coincidence that the SNL musical starts with John Mulaney calling out "Hot dogs and heroin, get your hot dogs and heroin here" describing NYC in the 1970s.

Good morning, all!
-
Annabelle and Stella have eaten their breakfast, but Thatch seems reluctant to leave the cat tree, where he lazes, flirts with me, and rolls about for tummy tickles and hugs. Some days, as a cat parent, I wonder how my two brothers and I ever survived our mother's crazy rages.
-
Today is vague. I do not have the energy to do the laundry, so that's on hold till tomorrow. I guess I will continue the iTunes cleanup.
-
DR George, thanks for the terrifying YouTube link. These Tennessee MAGA Morons - well, all Trump fanatics in political office, actually - should be executed or jailed for treason. Every day, the news on the Trump administration's crimes horrifies me.
-
Good morning.
-
TOD: My DH is from Chicago, so sometimes we'll go to the local Chicago hot dog stand. We haven't been there for a long time, though. They are very good, but I've never really loved hot dogs.
-
Hot dogs with mustard!
-
Just ordered the new book.
-
Hot dogs with mustard!
And onions!
-
Good morning, friends.

And others.
-
Perhaps I'll watch the SNL anniversary show today.

Congratulations on the great review, DR MichaelG!

In olden Middletown days, from sometime before I was old enough to know it existed to some time after I moved to NYC in 1979, there was a restaurant, Liberty, on Central Avenue in the downtown Middletown shopping/business district. I never ate there, so I can't say their menu was wonderful, but their famous takeout, their hot dogs, was beyond wonderful.
I've nevere tasted another one to compare to the Liberty's: it was more like a large Viennese sausage, and my family would call, place an order for 10-15, then drive down and pick them up. A Liberty hot dog "with everything" was essentially a chili dog, with mustard, possibly ketchup, chili, onions, and grated cheddar cheese. There were a bit of heaven for your tastebuds and I have never encountered one as wonderful ever since 1979.
-
after seeing DR singdaw's report, I don't feel so cold.
Nine degrees headed for 21 degrees. But Petey the PT Cruiser would not start.
-
I just googled "Middletown Ohio Liberty hotdog" and I found this chili recipe, supposedly from the Liberty's chef:
In a large heavy pot over medium heat add the following:
1 tablespoon oil
2 large onions finely chopped
¼ cup chili powder…1 tablespoon if kiddies are eating
1 tablespoon paprika
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon ground cumin
¼ teaspoon ground allspice
¼ teaspoon ground cloves
¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
Cook about 5 minutes until you can smell the spices and onions are soft
Add
2 lbs of ground beef…double grind
Cook slowly until meat is not pink but not browned breaking up the meat to a fine mixture. You can use a potato masher if needed.
Cook about 10 to 15 minutes
Add:
1 15 oz can tomato sauce
1 1/2 to 2 cups of good beef broth
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
1 oz square unsweetened chocolate
2 bay leaves
1 can pinto chili beans**
1 tablespoon molasses or 1 heaping tablespoon dark brown sugar
Salt and pepper to taste
Simmer for about two hours then remove bay leaves.
-
No mail today.

TOD: Being from Detroit, it has to be Detroit-style Coney Islands with Greek chili and onions. It usually comes with mustard but I prefer it without. There were two classic places next door to each other, Lafayette and American, and we were a Lafayette house. When I'm not in Detroit, it turns out that Steve's Snappin' Dogs in the Denver airport does something reasonably close, even if they call it a Dallas Dog.
-
But it looks like Steve is retiring due to health issues, so the airport location might be closing in 2026 when the lease is up. They've already closed their city location.
-
Gimme a coney now.
-
Actually I could make them if I had the hot dog as I have canned Skyline.
-
Good morning, all.
-
Starting a Cary Grant-John Garfield war movie called Destination Toyko. I guess in honor of Grant playing Cole Porter, the movie’s soundtrack begins with a hot version of Blow, Gabriel, Blow.
-
Too many tasty hot dogs to name, but a few absolute favorites:
Chicago hot dogs with the usual works, nothing held back.
Chili, cheese and onion, or even just chili and onion. Best I've had are at the original Coney Island Nathan's.
Cincinnati-style Coney which is made with the Cincinnati chili-type of, you know, chili.
Sauerkraut, etc. Oh, the list goes on. And I haven't experimented nearly as much as I'd like to.
It's great to have them out somewhere, but I can, and do, make all of the above at home. When ordering them, I take them however they're prepared. At home, I love to put them on the grill and get some char* for even more flavor.
*You can't have Charles without some char.
-
DR Elmore, that recipe sounds fantastic.
At a glance, it seems quite Cincinnati-style inspired, which would make sense, given the geography.
-

Maybe it was prescient. This flick was made three years before Night and Day.
-
I'm of the school that doesn't put ketchup on hot dogs. To me, it's a mustard kind of meat. BUT...
I am open to trying other peoples' preferences, and last summer I made myself a plain hot dog putting just mustard and ketchup on it, not too much of each, I wasn't trying to drown it, and it was very yummy.
-
I love a good hot dog, but I rarely go out of my way for them, except at Costco. They are unbeatable at the price. I love ‘em with mustard, relish and onions when available. They used to offer sauerkraut, but no more.
Nathan’s and Gray’s Papaya Dog in the city. A dog with tomato and onions sauce at Shea Stadium. A loaded Chicago dog.

So, this morning, for my MONDAY kind of fun, I went outside and started up one of the chainsaws and cut back the part of a fallen tree that was part way across the driveway.
Last night's storm was horrible, and the following winds are still with us. This part of the world has become Wind Central, and we do not like it one bit. We here in this area have PTSD from the microburst (with embedded twisters) of 2018 that did such horrible damage. And since then, it seems like whenever storms kick up, winds are routinely more of a threat than they ever used to be. Anyhoo, this particular winter storm had everything: snow, sleet, freezing rain, rain, winds gusting up to 50 mph and more, and there are limbs down and trees down everywhere. I hope we have no more than this single one.
-
San Antonio has its own regional treat called a crispy dog. You take your cooked hot dog, roll it in a corn tortilla and the fry it. Serve it scalding hot with mustard to dip it into. Spectacular.
-
I love that $1.50 Costco hot dog and soda deal, too, but I've only gotten it a couple of times since they stopped having onions. I keep meaning to complain about that, but usually when I'm in there I just want to make my purchase and get out, and I haven't gotten around to it.

I don't think I said this the other day, but that's a fine book cover, BK.
As one of the proofers for the second and third Harry Stearns mysteries, I also have to say I especially enjoyed this one's L.A. and Las Vegas settings, and the fact that it takes place during my own years out there. I was hardly a regular Vegas-goer, but I wish I had been one to some extent, to have better soaked up the edgy fun atmosphere of the place before it became Disney-Corporate-Vegas. Anyhoo, y'all have some fun reading to look forward to.

DR Singdaw, stacked machines are fine. Plus you can have each machine going at the same time vs the all in one machines.

DR John I'm sorry you have covid. I asked because your symtoms sounded much like mine.

Singdaw, thanks about the clock.

At least while I am stuck home sick I can spend more time appreciating my new appliances ;D

Thanks DR Jrand, if only the vibes had worked. Evenutually they will ;)

From DR John:
Thank you. I have no fever and no symptoms other than a scratchy throat.
You have been complaining about allergies, and the scratchy throat was my first symptom. I hope the headache isn't next.

I hope the headache isn’t either.

For some reason, I don't usually like cabbage, but when it's in a deep-fried egg roll from the Chinese restaurant, cabbage is really tasty. Maybe ordering an egg roll is called for on National Cabbage Day.

IIRC, I liked everything it was stuffed with, so I ate the inside when it was served.
I'm trying to think whether my parents ever actually made stuffed cabbage, or if we just brought it in from outside. My grandmother (Dad's mom) made stuffed cabbage, though.

I thought most Jewish families ate it. I rarely made the vegetarian version when the kids were young, more because I lost the recipe for my mother's sauce than the lack of meat. When Craig lived in Romania it was very popular there and he created a delicious vegetarian version.

Elmore, you are our resident Victor Herbert expert. Have you seen this Red Mill TV production with Nichols and May that's been discussed on castrecl? Sounds fascinating in a way that train wrecks can be.
Here's the IMDB info on the show:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0352767/?ref_=nm_flmg_job_1_cdt_eps_tt_1
I would say this broadcast is to the original Victor Herbert m,usical co,medy as Donald Trump is to a person of ethics and decency. The original musical was about two "Broadway" New Yorkers - almost Damon Runyan types - stuck in Holland with no monery to get home. It's very funny with them in various disguises such as waiters and tour guides while they help a ship's captain and his fiancee escape her father's disapproval, rescue the fiancee from the supposedly haunted red mill; fall in love; and meet Sherelock Holmes.
Since I cannot find a list of what sonmgs were used in the 1958 broadcast, I have no idea what they did to the score.
-
I was 11 in April, 1958, sixth grade in school, and this Red Mill broadcast was something I wanted to see. I vaguely remember the advertising for it. It was one of those 9-11:00 things, as I recall, and my bedtime was something like 8:30. I think my mother would have liked my brother Macbeth and me in bed by 4:00 if she could manage it.
I digress. There was no way the Red Mill and my bedtime could coincide so I missed it.
-
Back to Billy. This time it's The Front Page. The soundtrack from Billy May is wonderful.
May also wrote one of my favorite Kritzerland releases, The Fuzzy Pink Nightgown.
-
Sorry about that, Elmore. I share similar stories of all the shows I missed due to bedtimes and a misunderstanding mother.
-
One of these days I will forgive her. I hope.

I'm up, I'm up - eight and a half hours of sleep.

Doug is the most obstinate, hard-headed dope about learning new stuff - he thinks he'll just wait for some forum he posted to to maybe give him a workaround for his ten year old software. He does all his designing in Dreamweaver - so, from now on the Kritzerland site is a dead issue because he refuses to join the 21st century? Not to mention his other projects. I may have him just set up a one-off order page for this book because I'm not waiting for him to figure this all out.
-
Meanwhile, three people have ordered the book. I do hope others will follow.

The casual homophobia in this version of The Front Page hasn't aged well. Wilder's insistence that the actors not talk over the top of each other was outdated and topped by His Girl Friday years before.
But the cast is great. Every minor character from Susan Sarandon to Charles Durning is perfectly cast. Austin Pendleton, David Wayne, Harold Gould, Vincent Gardenia, Herb Edelman and Carol Burnett all joyful.

Sorry about that, Elmore. I share similar stories of all the shows I missed due to bedtimes and a misunderstanding mother.
One missed show that I remember was at age 10, and my parents had heard that "All In the Family" needed parental supervision for pre-teens, because there were issues like bigotry that might need parental guidance for youngsters. But they had to be out the night "All In the Family" debuted. They told my brother who was then 16 not to let me watch the show and he took the instruction seriously. By the following week, the family was watching "All In the Family" together.
Ironically (I think it's an irony), as the series went on, Archie Bunker became more lovable. But when we saw that first episode, I think my folks were glad they didn't let me at 10 watch that episode without them in the room.

Cook about 5 minutes until you can smell the spices and onions are soft
Add
2 lbs of ground beef…double grind
Cook slowly until meat is not pink but not browned breaking up the meat to a fine mixture. You can use a potato masher if needed.
Cook about 10 to 15 minutes
Add:
1 15 oz can tomato sauce
1 1/2 to 2 cups of good beef broth
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
1 oz square unsweetened chocolate
2 bay leaves
1 can pinto chili beans**
1 tablespoon molasses or 1 heaping tablespoon dark brown sugar
Salt and pepper to taste
Simmer for about two hours then remove bay leaves.
This sounds great Larry, but to what do the two asterisks after the "1 can pinto chili beans**" refer?
There was no explanation in the original post. I'm guessing it means "opt5ional" since I do not remember beans in the chili on the Liberty hot dogs.

Wait a minute. How many people in this jernt have covid now? Is this 2021, or what?
Everybody get better!

Wow. I hope this doesn't mean I will have a problem the next time I download one onto my Kindle ap on my Samsung tablet.
I would assume not. It looks like if you want to download via USB cable, which is what I do. ::)

You're welcome, Freddie.

A one-off order page sounds like a fine solution.

They were probably right.
After Archie Bunker became more lovable in later seasons, it was strange in reruns seeing how repugnant the character's bigotry had been in the first several episodes.
-
Of course, one of the toughest things to explain to impressionable kids in 1970s sitcom TV was how this Bruce Kimmel guy kept getting cast as the nerd who never got the girl. :)

I just googled "Middletown Ohio Liberty hotdog" and I found this chili recipe, supposedly from the Liberty's chef:
In a large heavy pot over medium heat add the following:
1 tablespoon oil
2 large onions finely chopped
¼ cup chili powder…1 tablespoon if kiddies are eating
1 tablespoon paprika
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon ground cumin
¼ teaspoon ground allspice
¼ teaspoon ground cloves
¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
Cook about 5 minutes until you can smell the spices and onions are soft
Add
2 lbs of ground beef…double grind
Cook slowly until meat is not pink but not browned breaking up the meat to a fine mixture. You can use a potato masher if needed.
Cook about 10 to 15 minutes
Add:
1 15 oz can tomato sauce
1 1/2 to 2 cups of good beef broth
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
1 oz square unsweetened chocolate
2 bay leaves
1 can pinto chili beans**
1 tablespoon molasses or 1 heaping tablespoon dark brown sugar
Salt and pepper to taste
Simmer for about two hours then remove bay leaves.

Good afternoon.
-
That's a dream for me, John G.
-
I made someone's day today.
Should I tell the story like Vixmom does?
-
I made someone's day today.
Should I tell the story like Vixmom does?
Yes!
-
Ok.
-
My daughter and I have been invited to a wedding of a senior couple at my church. I've known the man since I first started going to this church. So over 40 years. And the woman is a real gem.
-
I have tickets to Wicked the same day.
-
I tried to trade in the tickets for another performance.
-
They have always allowed this without any problem.
-
But they said I would have to pay the difference between what I paid and what they are charging now.
-
They are now charging $330 per ticket.
-
Sooooo............. no.
-
My daughter and I talked about it, and decided to give them away instead.
-
We've seen Wicked three times already. The first time at Gammage, with their notorious awful sound system.
-
The second time in San Diego, starring the Wonderful Jason Graae as the Wizard. (Awesome sound, by the way.)
-
The third time at Gammage, also starring Jason Graae. Just before the pandemic hit.
-
I like Wicked, but I'm not willing to pay several hundred dollars on top of what I already paid to see it again.
-
Wait a minute. How many people in this jernt have covid now? Is this 2021, or what?
Everybody get better!
Not I! I just got the shot a couple of weeks ago.
How long was it between your two vaccinations?
Too long. ::)
LOL, six months, a year or more?
-
That is a nice story DR Laura.
-
Who did you give them to?
-
My daughter and I talked about it, and decided to give them away instead.
Had the people you gave the tickets to seen the show before?
-
Page That Shall Not Be Named a/k/a Page Rupert!
-
So I called a friend who has a teenage daughter.
-
The daughter's birthday is today.
-
The friend's birthday is the day before the show.
-
There was an audible gasp.
-
The teen is obsessed with the Wicked movie.
-
So I think we made a good choice.
-
Just wait till she sees the seats -- 11th row center.
-
Gammage suggested I donate the tickets back to them so they could resell them.
-
So I think we made a good choice.
That's wonderful!
-
Just wait till she sees the seats -- 11th row center.
Wow!
-
Does our president own Gammage?
Sounds like it.
-
Test vibes and no more irritants for MR BK.
-
Nice review and photos from DR MICHAEL G.
-
DR JOHN G I want a crispy dog now.
-
Dreamweaver?????
OMG I was using that back in 1999 and before. I never was convenient or intuitive or efficient.
I think I still have it on the computer in the party room.....
-
DR JOHN G someone said on the inner web that some insurance companies are no longer paying or co-paying for Paxlovid.
-
Sorry DR JANE.
-
DR LAURA what a wonderful story!!!!
-
The Paxlovid worked for me. The pills don't taste bad. But an hour or so later, there's a horrible taste that comes from inside your mouth.
-
So, the sore throat seems to be gone. No symptoms, except tiredness.
-
Laura, that’s a great story. But it’s going to ruin the ending for the girl. She’ll have only seen part one.
-
Gratuitous post 202!
-
The daughter's birthday is today.
:)
-
The friend's birthday is the day before the show.

Perfect!

I think so. Happy birthday to them both.
-
Just wait till she sees the seats -- 11th row center.
Wow.
-
Gammage suggested I donate the tickets back to them so they could resell them.
I think what you did is much nicer.
-
DR JOHN G someone said on the inner web that some insurance companies are no longer paying or co-paying for Paxlovid.
Why I suggested he ask what the charge is.
-
Sorry DR JANE.
Thanks. I feel better after getting out for a walk.

That is fast on the sore throat. Mine got worse, not terrible, and somewhat red before it got better.

My throat had been better but began bothering me a bit more last night. I think I irritated it coughing.

George, Keith also got Wordle in three.

I'm still ketchuping (if not on a hot dog) here...
DR MichaelG, great photos, etc., on the production. That whole experience must have been so gratifying. Congrats!
What's next?
Verdi's Otello! A great chorus show without it being an insanely huge part like this one. I'm taking today off to rest the voice, but I'll have to review the score every day the rest of the week to be ready for the weekend performances. So many words.
-
I guess I'm a trendsetter? I had COVID last month, before the rest of you. The only way I knew it was COVID vs a cold was the COVID test. It was the mildest case I've had yet. Vibes that all who have it now are feeling better soon.

It seems most people these days only know they have covid vs a cold is by testing.

You are lucky, scratchy is what my throat felt like before I got sick, and basically what it feels like now.

Because of my allergies I pay attention to what my throat looks like so I know if I am sick or not.

Book ordered.
As one of the proofers, let me back ip ChasSmith’s earlier comments about what fun this book is. Like retired detective Harry Stearns, I hate Vegas. But I loved BK’s recreation of world that exists no longer, a world of glamour and glitz, with something sinister not too far below the surface. There’s even a Sondheim reference or two, making the Easter eggs worth the hunt. But it’s the relationship between Harry and his secretary Bernice that I enjoyed the most.
-
I don’t feel like heating anything for dinner.

I had some tomatoes and some Pub Mix, a medley of salty snacks thrown together.

I saw three stories today on how to improve your egg salad.

Naturally the movie opens with a quote from Hamlet. Because, why not?

That could be a trivia question for DR Rodzinski’s group.

Here's an interesting one: My Instacart order from yesterday from Walmart included some Tillamook beef sticks that come in a plastic container with a screw-off and on top. So, I just opened it to try one - as you know, all containers like that have a cardboard or aluminum security top that you have to remove, just so you know no one has been in there. Well, someone had been in there, all right, cut the aluminum and then either grabbed a few or did who knows what else to them - I wasn't about to find out. I called Instacart, they gave me an instant credit, I placed the order for just that item and they'll deliver it - total cost to me for the delivery - .49.

I tell you, the human race has sunk to new lows, every day in every way.

TRACKER hasn't had new episodes in over two months, but it started up with a new episode this week. I guess it was on the network last night, because the new episode showed up streaming today. It's an exciting show, and it's good to have it back with new episodes.
-
In other streaming adventures, having just watched the first two episodes of SEVERANCE, we're having trouble getting into the series, which is apparently very popular.

ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL had yet another fine episode, with the darkness of the lead character's guilt over being let out of military service mixing well with the overall heartwarming nature of the show.
But that show's current season will be over soon. I'll miss it during the long wait for the next season.

The new Criterion release of Winchester 73 looks great, but the extras are not altogether interesting. There is a short documentary on Anthony Mann’s movies with James Stewart. It features a lot of talking heads and a lot of info.
