Well, you've read the notes, the notes have a hot link, baby, and now it is time for you to post until the hot link cows come home.

And the word of the day is: FRISKY!

BK, I placed my order and it looked like it all went through on my PayPal account, but then at the very end, I got a screen that said there was a problem.
Could you confirm that my order got through OK (this morning around 6:23 a.m. New York time)?

Good morning, all!

I stayed up too late to finish Murder Past Due, which I really liked and recommend. I want to buy the next in the series and see how I like it. After the two dreadful "Mysteries of Max," it was a pleasant surprise. So I finished the book around two hours after my usual bedtime, so I set the alarm for 6:45. At 5:30, I was wide awake and out of bed. Go figure.
-
The cats and I have had breakfast, and I will spend today on iTunes. We have no hot water today - as well as no heat - for further repairs on the hot water situation.
-
DR Rodzinski, I agree with you about the street vendor hot dogs. Lordy, are they wonderful!
-
DR Laura, what a kind gesture. I can't believe anyone would want to sit through Wicked four times. Since the movie is following the novel more closely than the musical, perhaps your friend will see two different endings between show and movie part two?
-
$330 per ticket? We need someone with a little brains and a little talent to do to Broadway prices what an idiotic Fat Orange Felon is doing to the government.

Friend said this teen was thinking of taking a theater class when she gets to high school. I think she's in 8th grade at the moment. If Wicked is her first theater experience she'll love it.

Also, I don't understand this part one and part two of Wicked.

Also, I don't understand this part one and part two of Wicked.
The movie that's out now (came out Nov. 2024) is "Wicked, Part One." The movie "Wicked, Part Two: For Good" is announced to be released Nov. 2025.
The Part One movie, even though it's over 2-1/2 hours, ends at the point in the story where the stage musical's Act One ends, with "Defying Gravity."

Today, a stop at the pharmacy to pick up a new prescription.
I'm starting on a "statin" (cholesterol meds) - the same as many many friends who have been taking them for years - and frankly I look forward to being on them. Price is right, too - $5.00 - but I don't know yet if that's a 30-day or 90-day supply. We shall see.
-
Today, universe willing, no aggravating outdoors work or anything related. I mostly need to spend time finishing up an internal cleaning and reassembly of my keyboard. I need it soon!

Good morning, friends.

And others.

I don't remember the first websites I visited. It would have just been stuff at random that I heard about and wanted to try. Most of my early experiences with the World Wide Web were centered around the challenge of getting online and navigating it smoothly in the first place, because all of that so strongly ties in with the internet still being new, and better online connections being new and, in their way, challenging - especially if you wanted or needed the faster ones. And that was me.
I was using my first desktop PC at the time, purchased at our then-new Costco for $800, a "386" whose specs would be beyond laughable if I dug out the paperwork describing it. I had a 1200-baud and later a 2400-baud dialup modem, okay for early connections to things like the pre-Windows AOL, Prodigy, and the like. But once Windows became the standard and the World Wide Web was opening up, you needed to go all the way up to a 14,000-baud connection. Which was easily doable, except that for some cheap-o computers like mine, you also needed to upgrade the serial port (it's all starting to come back now) to run a really nice external modem like mine, OR you needed to install an internal modem which, being attached directly to the motherboard, would do the job. I agonized over that for quite a while and finally sprung for the internal one, and was finally able to get to some web sites. But it was still slow going, depending on the dialup connection or the service provider, and it took some time to learn the different ways of getting that connection good, and at an affordable price.

Yep. My only regular prescription for, let's see, some 17 years has been the blood pressure meds, which have worked beautifully, so now it'll be these two things. I do not complain.

I just remembered my very weird dream, for which I can at least blame DR MichaelG for starters:
A director friend was telling me that Verdi's Otello was an upcoming project for him (which couldn't be farther from reality), which somehow led me to telling him that a personal project of mine this year was to study (apparently not perform, just study) Verdi's La forza del destino. This conversation took place as we were walking toward the bus we were to take to get back (to Danbury? who knows?) from this convention or some kind of special event we were at. Once on the bus, however, that thread began to deteriorate, and while I can't yet put my finger on what the next part was about (my being on the right bus? finding my way? finding my money?), I know that the idea of those two operas remained as sort of a central focus of the dream. Utterly bizarre.
Other details have vanished, but I think it's one of those that might come back to me little by little through the day.
-
TOD: My first memory of being on the internet was a chat area called Saturday Review Online. IIRC, an actor named Jerry James was kind of a moderator of the Theater section.
I must have had email before that, because using it needed an email address.
I'd guess it was around 1995?

My first computer excperience was at The Drama Book Shop, ordering from wholesalers as emergency stop-gap orders.

Rodzinski, did you ever post what happened yesterday that made it a bad day?
I didn’t want to dump it all out but there’s some sort of norovirus outbreak at the in-laws’ facility, and dad in law wouldn’t get out of bed, so he got sent to hospital. Then mom in law, who refuses to eat enough real food or drink water, fell last night. Now she’s in the hospital. My own left shoulder blade muscles have been incredibly sore. So those are the main issues.

I started grad school in Ohio and suddenly the internet was a thing. They even made us get an email account. What do I need this for? The tyranny! But it all worked out.

Oh no, vibes of all kinds for your family!

FYI, for me, and others like me (yes, there are a few), the World Wide Web isn't "the internet". It's now the major portion of it, but there have been, and still are, other "protocols" (if I'm using the word somewhat correctly) and other ways of being online and using that big ol' Information Superhighway (remember that?).
My start was "America Online" in 1986, when that was a Commodore Computer-only service. My first modem for my Commodore 128 got me on there and on a few local "bulletin boards" for computer user groups, weather, and other informational stuff. "America Online" became AOL, and there was Prodigy, and Compuserve, and being able to log on to libraries and other institutions. But these still weren't the Web. When the guy whose name I forget at the moment actually created the Web interface, that's what eventually became adopted by one and all. And that was concurrent with the government/military/university internet becoming opened up to the general public. But to this day, there are other things out there that ride along on the internet. One example, I'm still a member of a BBS in New York City, a text-based system of conversational activity that runs on UNIX and has nothing to do with the Web at all. But yes, most people only know the Web, and that therefore is "the Internet".

It is 11 degrees here headed for 15 degrees.

I plan to have soup today and hot dogs tomorrow!

My sister was on this new fangled inner web and I watched her do some searches, etc.
Anyway I paid $1000 for a computer - I had had a Tandy computer for some word processing and games, but it was too slow for the innerweb.
My brother in law took me to some store and I paid $99 for a computer disc to join FreeWeb and had a separate phone line installed - dial up modem.
And I was on the inner net.
My first home page & email was at Yahoo. My first signed up website was EBAY.
I found lots of websites about movie stars and figured out how to save pictures and send emails.
It was fun. I remember buying lots of things on EBAY and having to buy a money order to send for the items....and then PAYPAL!!!!

DR Laura and I can understand one side of these temps:
Rio de Janeiro recorded its hottest day in at least a decade when temperatures on Monday reached 44 degrees Celsius (111 degrees Fahrenheit) — about 145 degrees warmer than Bismarck, North Dakota — as residents flocked to the ocean to try to cool off.
-
I would assume the 145-degree span is Fahrenheit, since that much in Celsius is vastly greater.

I'm up, I'm up - seven hours of deep sleep.

Eggs, eggs, eggs. Just saw an article on Ina Garten’s secrets for a better egg salad. (“She’s got eggs/And she knows hiw to use ‘em,” as ZZ Top used to sing.) And there’s a scene in Caligula in which he and his court throw eggs at the heads of prisoners who have been buried up to their necks.

Interesting from that article about the casting of Ethan Hawke as Lorenz Hart:
"Ethan Hawke undergoes a unique physical transformation to give a theatrical but never overplayed performance as a five-foot-tall, sexually ambiguous alcoholic perched precariously on the wagon."

Interesting about the isolation period. I thought it would be five days, IF you feel better. I am still isolating. Thanks for the vibes, all. Jane, yes time spent with the little Rodzes was good. Although the boy is now home with a scratchy throat. So the hits just keep on comin’.
-
Also, I don't understand this part one and part two of Wicked.
DR Laura, have you seen the movie? In the show you have intermission after "Defying Gravity" so the audience has time to reset. They don't like showing movies with intermissions these days, so if you kept barreling on after "Defying Gravity" who would be really paying attention? Schwartz said they couldn't find a way to get around that issue, so they divided the two acts into two movies. And with that decision, they were then able to go deeper into characters and storylines than the show could.
-

I can't imagine they are capable of challenging every single thing immediately. Since T was elected I have seen ads on FB asking for money and saying they were getting prepared.
I went to their page and they do mention some lawsuits. I googled the question and cannot find a list of suits filed this year.

While all this clearly illegal stuff is happening on a daily basis, can someone please explain to me where the ACLU is? Have not heard one single peep out of them and they should be challenging every single thing immediately. What gives?
I get one or two emails from them daily asking for money. I think that’s all they’re doing.
Hmmm, emails vs all of my FB ads ;D

No, it isn’t.

Simone Simon was truly beautiful. And she’s heartbreaking in this.

And now, from the romantic to the ridiculous: a Japanese horror flick called Genocide.

In this strangely perverse movie, the curvy blonde villainess turns to be a concentration camp survivor who had her number tattooed on her left breast.

Would any filmmakers use a plot element like that these days? (at least for movies from a major studio)
-
The movie ended with the explosion of an H-bomb wiping out all mankind. Totally wack.

I started Thelma to bookend the day with Malcom McDowell. June Squibb is a marvel. It’s a better performance than Demi Moore’s in The Substance. She should have been nominated. Richard Roundtree is great too.

I remember buying things on eBay and getting either a money order or a bank check and mailing it out to the seller! ;D
-
The earliest internet access that I can remember was at work. They had to have very fast internet because it was a library system, but they also had very little security (at that time).
-
After hours, we could use the computers for personal use and no one would know where we went online! ::)
-
;)
-
I remember originally signing up on eBay with my work e-mail address (that didn't last long, though)! :o
-
We could even install our own computer games! They actually wanted us to do that (at the time ::) ) so that we could become more proficient with the mouse and general computer use.
-
I finally got my own internet access at home through my sister's boyfriend's account, and could go online on my computer.
-
I don't remember if I ever had a phone modem, or if I had cable internet from the beginning. I just know I couldn't get DSL internet because I was too far away from the hub (whatever that meant).

Blue Moon about Lorenz Hart will be screened tonight in Berlin. Cautiously optimistic.
https://www.indiewire.com/news/festivals/ethan-hawke-richard-linklater-blue-moon-offensive-art-1235096478/
Interesting. I still think that they should've cast an actor who actually physically resembled Lorenz Hart in the height department. ::)
-
Also, I don't understand this part one and part two of Wicked.
I still think that they could've added a new song or two for someone else to sing. ::)
-
Otherwise, Stephen Schwartz can't be nominated for best song, because no song was written specifically for the film.

But who would you cast who has at least similar star power to Ethan Hawke? Dustin Hoffman would be too old, Tom Cruise doesn't seem right, and I don't think Peter Dinklage would work.

Well, they could have, but they must not have wanted to. I'm not sure where you would add a song. Mr. Schwartz already has several Oscars and it sounds like he'll get a crack at it next year. I don't think they'd give Wicked films a best song Oscar two years in a row no matter how well the movies do.
-
Cynthia Erivo and Stephen Schwartz have written a new song for Elphaba to sing in Part Two.
They've written it together? That's pretty cool. Can't wait to hear it.

I do understand Ethan Hawke's star power and his history with the director. It's just that with the few images that I've seen of Ethan Hawke as Hart, the first thing I think of is that it's all special effects, and then thoughts like that (especially in other non-science fiction movies with similar effects) almost always take me out of the moment and I start to think of only the special effects and not the story...but that's just me. :-\

I intellectually know that they could have if they had wanted to. I just wanted him to write more songs for the movie. ;D

First review of Blue Moon is good.
https://www.thewrap.com/blue-moon-review-richard-linklater-ethan-hawke/
Good article except where the author wrote, "Screenwriter Robert Kaplow based the text off of Hart’s personal letters...."
It's "based ON..."! :P
-
And they didn't even add new songs! What's that all about?? :o
They did add a new section to "One Short Day."
By now, is it a spoiler to say who performs in that extra section, or does it possibly add to the excitement to know that those performers make a cameo appearance?
Personally, I would have liked to have known before I saw the movie. I enjoyed it more seeing it the second time when I did know.
I think I had heard that they had cameos, but I had forgotten by the time the moment came and just enjoyed the revelation.
-
I understand that Wicked the movie is in two parts. I guess I just don't know why. Why not make it one 2.5 hour movie.
Could be the old expression, When money is involved, it's always about the money. Even when it's not about the money, it's about the money.
;D

I was talking to a friend today. His wife has friends who work and live on a national parkh. On Friday they were fired. They woke Saturday to no heat, water or utilities, so they bundled their two dogs into a car to l shelter and food. Theyc came back on Sunday to pack up their belonging and fpound the locks changed so they could not retriecve their belongoings.
Thank you and fuck you, DOGE.
WTF?? :o

How is it possible for me to hate someone so much - that I don't even know. I didn't know I was capable of such disdain and.......hate.
Never before in my life. And I am almost 75 years old.
I (and many others, as well) am beginning to understand that hate, too. >:(
