After a really poor night of sleep, last night was another good one. The cats behaved, and Stella has a new bed. Ever since my gastrointestinal issues seriously began began back in 2022, I;ve kept a red plastic tub under my bed in case I need it during the night. I've never used it, but every time I've drsagged it out - in case! - I wake to find Stella sleeping in it. So, last night I officially turned it over to Stella.

Today is Stephen Sondheim's birthday. I think of him often and fondly.

After being sacked from a project by a lying, treacherous weasel I believed was a friend in 1991, my career died. Two years later, Bruce Kimmel saved my career - and my sanity - by asking me to orchestrate "Unsung sondheim" and Liz Callaway's Frank Loesser album I think this may be my favorite track from the recording. Thank you, Bruce!

Everything about Sondheim seemed to become part of the premium pricing era these past several years, from his off-Broadway and Broadway shows to the prices of his belongings from his homes.

This Facebook post reacted to the LOVE LIFE Times article.  The post seemed controversial but interesting.

"Arthur Lundquist
Well, they made cuts for time, to bring the running time down to two hours. Not a deal breaker in my book. They dropped one musical number that they didn't have time to do justice to. Not inexcusable for an Encores presentation. But then, the director thought "what didn't make sense to me was the script." Well, to me that would be grounds for any director of integrity to turn down a project. The original show ran for a year on Broadway, which suggests the book is no disaster, and needs someone who understands what works about the script. So in order for her to give herself a personal stake in the project, the director got rid of a magician in the first scene and replaced him with two children. Which it seems to me would take away our introduction to the "vaudeville" inter-scenes that are the show's major innovations. On the other hand, in the article I see no mention of songs from the Lerner or Weil songbook being shoehorned into the show, which seems to be an irresistible temptation in this day and age. On balance, I'd give it a chance. Can't be worse than the revival of CAMELOT."

On this show, I gave my wonderful Cheryl Baxter full choreographer credit even though she did two and a half numbers. But I'm tickled at the praise for Holmes and Watson's staging, which is mine and everything I love to do. He's also not quite correct about excising the ballets - I excised Joe Layton's extended ballets - bot are in our production - one completely reconceptualized and about two and a half minutes long, and the other one as short as I could get it, which is about two minutes. I cut no lines, no scenes, and no songs - but I do know how to pace a show :)

Did not sleep on plane. Endured long lines at customs where the kids managed to hold it together. Then we went to an airport hotel to crash for a few hours until our city air bnb was ready. Struggled to wake, then taxi’d about 40 min in. Mrs Rodz outdid herself with this place. We are in the very shadow (or currently the sparkling gleam) of the Eiffel Tower. Bought some groceries, ate at a bistro (beef bourganion) now crashed out again. The sound of a party wafting through the courtyard…

À repor on the four (4) movies I watched on the plane.

First, a French film whose title translates to Almost Legal. A group of ne’er-do-well kids in a southern France beach town, sneak into an old lady’s convenience store at night to run it as a cheap liquor store. A dumb throwback, not without its charms.

I thought I would at least appreciate the Oscar winning performance in A Real Pain, but it had very little range. Culkin seemed insufferable and unhinged from the word go. Nothing was really resolved or even explored very deeply. One monologue recited the entire movie’s reason for existing. Beautiful scenes of Warsaw though.

Then, because it fit the time left in my flight, a recent teen comedy called Sweethearts. About two college freshman platonic pals and their plan to ditch their long distance relationships over Thanksgiving break in their hometown. The kids have some weird charisma though the girl is a dead ringer for the Hermione actress. Subplot about their gay buddy who returns to their hometown to find an unexpected gay community is probably the best thing about it.

Here’s the original production of Pacific Overtures.

I've seen that AI enhanced version.  I think it was really well done...the enhancement, as well as the show itself.

Oh, my. :-\

Back from tonight's show - half a house and mostly a quiet audience who then cheered at the end. Baffling. But everyone I talked to said they really enjoyed it. The energy was a bit off because one of our ensemble members texted that he couldn't do the show due to illness and vomiting. I arrived at seven to be informed that but before I could even worry about it, our dance captain already was on it, figuring out who could do the scene shifts and how we'd deal with one less person. By show time, I simply think people'd heads were in the wrong space. Still, I don't think anyone could tell. Hopefully, he'll be back for the matinee.
