Well, you've read the notes, the notes had detective work, and now it is time for you to post until the detective cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: REPLETE!
-
George, congratulations on that great review for The HEAD That Wouldn’t DIE!
-
Also, congratulations to George, for your very impressive new HHW millstone in last night's posts!
-
Wonderful photos in last night's posts, John G! Thanks for posting them.
-
Notes dictated. Corroborated.
-
BK, that's great that your detective work went so well. Can't wait to hear the details when you're ready to share them!
-
Laura, what a lovely story about the person choosing to have their funeral on their own terms.
-
I recall the Encores! 2007 Gypsy as being a delight. Well, in my memory, Laura Benanti was luminous.
-
Good morning, all!
-
I slept very well. Annabelle stayed with me all night, and Thatch joined us sometime after 1:45, when I had my bathroom break.
-
This morning between 8 and 9:00, I have a visiting nurse showing up, courtesy of my HMO. I'd rather be shot.
-
DR Laura, I loved your funeral story. When my friend Bill Tynes was dying from AIDS in 1986, the only thing that cheered him up was planning his memorial service.
-
Keith got Wordle in three this morning.
-
In summer theatre 1971, I was in a production of Gypsy. I have no idea how good it was, but I had a grreat deal of fun. The first production I saw was the Tyne Daly production, which I liked very much. I thought her acting was superb but her singing pitchy and erratic. The next production I saw was the Bette Midler, which had much I liked, but when I watched it several months ago, I thought her singing was sloppy as she slid on and off notes. I wish I'd seen Merman because she's the voice I hear in those songs.
DR Jose and I saw the Patti Lupone production at City Center, before it moved to Broadway. I liked much of it, and Laura Benanti was a wonderful Louise. Patti, like Merman, is a force of nature, and I think she can do no wrong. After crashing and burning as Annie Oakley, I had no desire to see Bernadette Peters tackle Mama Rose, and - much as the cult raves about Audra - I don't. Her singing on the TV ads is enough to keep me away.
-
As to the movie, I love it. Several months ago, when I watched the Midler version, I watched the movie. The DVD includes the extended version of "You'll Never Get Away from Me" and the cut "Together Wherever We Go," and I wish they had not been cut. The cast is good, I don't mind Russell's being dubbed by Lisa Kirk, and from Broadway we get both Paul Wallace, Betty Bruce - who replaced Maria Karnilova as Tessie Tura - and the irreplaceable Faith Dane - whom I met several times - as the bugler Mazeppa. Betty Bruce's first Broadway role was the Courtesan in the OBC of The Boys from Syracuse.
-
We cruised to beautiful Rhodes semi hopeful that we could dock.
-
The pilot boat came out for the pilot to board our ship and steer us in.
-
I agree Laura, the living funeral was a wonderful idea and I am glad your friend was able to enjoy her last gathering with friends and familyi
-
Congratulations George in the lovely review!
-
The winds were too much for the pilot and he couldn't board our ship.
-
Alas, we are still cruising.
-
I’ve only seen one live version if Gypsy, the one currently on Broadway
-
I quite enjoyed it, and I thought Elmores friend Danny Burstein was a perfect Herbie
-
Alas, we are still cruising.

Good morning, all.

Tonight it begins. The summer theeder auditions. Take a deep breath.
-
Looking forward to hearing about BK's detective work.

-
Good morning, friends.
-
And others.
-
Sorry you couldn't disembark, DR Jane.
-
CONGRATULATIONS, DR George, on your lofty new perch in the HHW firmament!
-
I'll have to watch that Midler Gypsy again. I saw the original broadcast and I have the DVD, but it's been years.
Is there video of Tyne Daly's Mama Rose?
Midler doesn't totally do it for me, either, in that or as Dolly Levi. I've always been very glad I saw the latter's revival with Peters instead. I would love to have seen it with Buckley, too, though as much as I love her, I think her voice is what really betrays her age.
-
Lupone being a force of nature, indeed. I was watching/listening to a couple of Evita clips on YouTube yesterday. Get a load of her closing night performance of "Rainbow High". Holy moly on toasted rye.
-
I would love to have seen it with Buckley, too, though as much as I love her, I think her voice is what really betrays her age.
The last nine or so minutes of Act One of Hello Dolly with Betty Buckley are online here, including all the dialogue.

Good morning, all.
-
I saw a MacHaydn Theater summer stock production of Gypsy with Monica Wemitt, who was in the cast of the Hello, Dolly! that BK recorded. She was in her early twenties and did nicely in the role.
-
Then I saw Lupone and Benanti in the Broadway run. Excellent evening of theater.
-
I don’t like any of the filmed productions I have seen. Imelda Staunton was horrible. Bette Midler didn’t understand the role. Natalie Wood was the best thing in the first film.
-
FWIW, I think Streisand would not have been right as Rose. She wants to be sympathetic, not a monster.
-
I would have liked to have seen Angela Lansbury and Linda Lavin.
-
I must get stirring.
-
Here’s Linda Lavin’s Rose’s Turn

-
Congrats to DR GEORGE on his millstone and the great review.
-
I have only seen one production of GYPSY - and the director didn't understand the play and Rose thought she was a heroine.....and played the role like Shirley Temple.
I do like RR movie.
-
I don't think DR JANE is there to see GYPSY.

Good morning.
-
There were A LOT of dishes to be washed after that funeral. And it was worth it.
-
The picture of DR Jane reminds me -- did you all see the SNL sketch about the very first play?
-
I liked the Bette Midler version of Gypsy. Probably because it is obtainable by folks like me.
Our local theater did it a few years ago.
-
Don't get pizza. Get feetza.

Nice!
-
The homecare nursome and gone. Ireally hate these yearly events since I can't seen that my HMO learns any more than what they could learn from looking at my doctor's records online. Still, the young man was nice, although he wasn't thrilled that Annabelle and stella wanted to be his new BFF.
The good news is that I may get help with housekeeping and errands out of his visit.
-
Sorry you couldn't disembark, DR Jane.
Thanks. At least we have been to Rhodes before, still it is such a nice port and beauttown
-
I don't think DR JANE is there to see GYPSY.
LOL, I think not.

-
TOD: Like DR vixmom, the only Gypsy production I've seen is the current one on Broadway. This was my first time seeing Audra McDonald live and she was fantastic.
-
I remember when Chris Colfer sang Rose’s Turn on Glee. It worked fairly well for a gay teen boy. But it was the father’s confused, sympathetic response that I recall more.
-
Tonight at my 1970s film class will be Death Wish, unless there's a last minute change of plans.
-
All roads don't apparently lead to Rhodes. :-X

:)
-
LOL DR singdaw!
-
DR FREDDIE that was a great parody.
I can't tell you how much I hate Imelda Staunton - she screws up everything she is in....she is so incompetent.
In her production I can only think that Herbie is sticking around because he loves Louise or June or maybe one of the newsboys. It can't be because of HER.
-
Thursday.
-
Saturday night is my high school alumni dinner - which I will attend with a classmate. There may be three of us from our class.
So tomorrow I HAVE to get my hairs cut.....otherwise I will be presenting the Larry Fine/Albert Einstein look.

I've liked her in several things, but she isn't Sally Plummer in the National Theatre production of Follies. I'm not sure there's been one since Dorothy Collins.
