Good morning, all!
-
I got to bed later than usual (10:30) but Thatch stayed with me most of the night, and the aches and cramps stayed at a simmer, not the usual low boil.
-
DR Jrand74, was this your first watch of A Room with a View? It remains one of my all-time favorite movies. I think it may have been the first Merchant-Ivory film I ever saw.
-
I agree with BK: I like Manhattan, the first film I saw after moving to New York, much more than Annie Hall.
-
I have a quiet day planned, but we'll see what fresh hell rolls in unexpectedly. Until then, I'm taking it easy.
-
BK, thanks for the Michael Clayton tip. I never heard of it, but I looked it up on Amazon and it sounds like something I'd really like. I may watch it tonight.

I turned on TCM just as the documentary was ending (I still need to see that) and A Room With a View was about to begin. I think I lasted about ten minutes before I was out cold.
-
More vibes for BK to have a modern major miracle.
-
I might be a lone dissenter here. I like Manhattan a lot, but for me, Annie Hall is the greater of those two. This will probably sound contradictory, but while Manhattan's black-and-white scope presentation and its use of the Gershwin music are pretty stunning, there's something a little too "mannered" about it that keeps me at arm's length. Whereas Annie Hall is fresh, earthy, real. More engaging. Now, how's that for a bullshit review? :D
-
Tonight (hey, that would make a good title of something, wouldn't it?) I'm going up to SUNY New Paltz to see a production of Shrek that my good friend the great keyboardist is playing in and helped teach. It's a lengthy drive, but the weather is finally beautiful (as I hope the orchestra will be), and it'll be a nice evening out. And I do have the entire weekend free to keep ketchuping on things and doing some prep work on next week's musical chores.

Regarding the Notes on searching for songs called "It Is What it Is" -
There's a more traditional sounding late 1990s pop hit that's called
"That's The Way It Is" - Céline Dion
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6wbugWrfLU
-
In addition to penning his upcoming new hit "It Is What It Is", BK should write a followup/companion song, "What the HELL Am I Talking About?"
I should think that these would get plenty of air time. Don't you?

I agree that Michael Clayton is an excellent movie. Tilda Swinton excels in an excellent cast.
I also agree With ChasSmith on Annie Hall over Manhattan. I just find the age gap icky in the latter.

DR ELMORE I have seen Room With a View a few times.....I like it a lot.

TOD:
Truffaut's "Antoine Doinel" movies. I have the Criterion DVD set, and with the publicity about the upcoming 4K/Blu-ray upgrade I've felt ashamed that, other than The 400 Blows, I believe I only saw the very next film that followed. And yet I've had them all here for years. So I re-watched Blows and its supplements and should get through all the rest in the coming week.

Sad news.
That's the one in Buellton, I presume? Yes, I guess it would have to be. Great fondness for that one.
Such a great location. Loved stopping there. Hell, I think I drove up from L.A. once just to enjoy the drive up the coast and have lunch there. I'd also been to the one near San Clemente.
The third one - up in the central valley? - possibly still exists, but last time I heard anything about it people were saying it's but a ghost of its former self. As I'd expect, since that seems to be the way of the world these days. I was never at that one.
-
I think the other California jernts really known for their pea soup were Marie Callender's. Am I right about that? Friends and I really liked it, and I'm thinking it was actually more delicious than Andersen's. What other places, anywhere, have specifically been known for their pea soup, I wonder?

DR MichaelG, I am glad you are enjoying the photos.

I didn't know there was one in San Clemente. We often stopped for the night in Santa Nella on our drives to L.A. and always ate at Andersen's.

It was somewhere in that area, driving south on I-5. Oceanside, maybe.
Santa Nella would be the one I hadn't stopped at.

Thanks.
-
Love that drive. And lived Andersen’s anachronistic vibes. It was too good for this world. I guess no reason for the building to exist if people aren’t lining up for pea soup.
-
Michael Clayton is a satisfying film for sure. Clooney at his best.
-

-
Another vote for Annie Hall over Manhattan. Manhattan was originally on our 70s film class syllabus but got bumped for last night's Godfather Part II scenes, in part because of the age factor.
-
Michael Clayton has been in my downloads since it's currently either on Amazon Prime or Netflix, I forget which. I've never seen it so I should watch it soon.

It's such a big issue right now.
Do you mean the theater is worried about money, or that potential audiences are worried about money to buy tickets?

Did I mention that I am slightly allergic to our hotel room. I'm not the only one the tour. Another man is having problems with is asthma.

Audiences. We're not NY, where there are tons of theater types who sell out eight performances of Smile - although I really don't believe they have. I also had to laugh out loud at their latest "the reviews are out!" post - in which there is ONE review, broken into about eight separate quotes. And one other from their pal Ron Fassler - not a real reviewer - would be like me quoting Robert Yacko loving our show and attributing it to his website.

-
Nice, DR Rodzinski.
-
Listening to a live performance recording of Stokowski conducting Bartok’s Miraculous Mandarin Suite, the first piece I ever played in an orchestra. Loved it then, love it now. In keeping with BK’s current listening, however, I can tell you I like Ormandy’s better. Solti’s, too. I just wish I had a recording of our own concert.
This is with the American Symphony Orchestra in Carnegie Hall, December 1969. I like a lot of Stokowski, but there was too much in this piece I didn’t so much.

Page THREE?

I'll shave in about fifteen minutes, then shower, then mosey on over to the theater - get everyone in the right energy, then see if I know anyone there, then either watch the show or leave.

Interesting. From rogerebert.com:
One of the many delights of writer/director Alexis Langlois’ directorial debut, “Queens of Drama,” is that to describe its genre requires stringing words that have probably never been assembled in the history of the English language before. It is (checks notes) a French lesbian pop-punk rock musical, with all the glitz, melodrama, and irresistible tunes such a descriptor would suggest. Focusing on the tumultuous relationship between pop star Mimi Madamour (Louiza Aura) and lesbian punk rocker Billie Kohler (Gio Ventura), the film traces how the two take turns flitting between friends, enemies, lovers, and rivals—topping the charts and bottoming each other.

It was very good. Not the best I've seen or heard, but it was wonderful meeting up with good friends I hadn't seen in a couple of years. Totally worth it.

Tonight, I played cards at my mom's and, as usual, I didn't win. ::)
-
We played two games and my friend Shelly (who is playing with us once in a while now) won a game, and this other woman, Dee (not my sister Diane, aka DeeDee) won the other game.
-
We chatted and ate Cheez-Its and mini custard eclairs and had a pretty good time.
-
After we finished and went to our respective homes, I went shopping for my sister, the aforementioned Diane, aka DeeDee.
-
;)
-
We're all going to her house on Sunday to celebrate both Easter (non-secularly, of course) and her daughter's birthday.
-
My niece's actual birthday was yesterday, but the family is all getting together on Sunday so we'll have more time.
-
I did some shopping for my sister tonight, and one of the things that she wanted was some milk.
-
She didn't need a lot, but I got a whole gallon (she okayed it) and then I'll take whatever she doesn't need, since I need some more milk anyway, and it'll be kind of a payment for going shopping for her in the first place. :)
-
HOWEVER, when I left the store and got back to her house, she asked, "Milk?"
-
:o
-
Page SIX???
-
It literally hit me just then that I had left the milk at the store!!
-
Again???
-
Yesterday was such a lovely posting day.
-
And here we are, stuck on page six again.
-
Not very sporting.
-
Ridic.
-
Completely.
-
I rushed back and they had the gallon of milk waiting for the purchaser (me ::) ) to return and get it.
-
So, we had about half a house - I decided to watch act one from row four rather than my usual back row seat.
-
Fortunately, I got it at Fred Meyer which is only about five minutes away from her house.
-
The audience was fairly quiet, laughs-wise - applause was hearty. So, I planned to leave at intermission.
-
So, all is well. :)
-
I did do a little shopping for myself, so I got a few things.
-
But about ten minutes in, they came alive and really got into the show, so I stayed for all of it. It's a whole different experience from row four - much more involving.
-
Anyway, it was an excellent performance.
-
Now I must write some damn notes.
-
DR Jrand74, was this your first watch of A Room with a View? It remains one of my all-time favorite movies. I think it may have been the first Merchant-Ivory film I ever saw.
It's one of my and my sister's favorite movies, too!

I simply must.

RUPERT'S PAGE SEVEN DANCE!!
-
There was a production of a musical (almost operetta) version of A Room With a View several years ago.
-
I got to see it (a couple of theater friends were in it!) and I thought that it was wonderful!
-
I still hope that something happens with it.
-
I don't know if there have been any other productions. :-\
-
BK, thanks for the Michael Clayton tip. I never heard of it, but I looked it up on Amazon and it sounds like something I'd really like. I may watch it tonight.
I saw that in the theaters and really liked it, but what I really remember is that with all the close-ups, George Clooney's eye liner was very noticeable...to the point of being (for me, at least) a distraction! ::)
