Finally! My REWIND arrived this morning, with a wonderful prize. Thank you, dear BK.
Since I can’t read so fast as every dear reader did/does/will do, will enjoy it a little at a time.  So I’d have a quite longer pleasant time than theirs.

I was downloading a Marcy song and forgot I was doing it.....I went on to other things....then suddenly my room was filled with this VOICE!  Whew!

Well we have certainly created a Marcy and Mary sales blip if nothing else.

I would doubt that Marcy has photo approval on the cover of a $1.98 album, but I could be wrong.  Is it in S T E R E O P H O N I C sound?

Two albums that I LOVED when I was little are:

THE KIRBY STONE FOUR SING - funny songs and vaudeville songs...purchased at a grocery store for 88 cents.

JOHNNY MATHIS BROADWAY - beautiful songs.  My aunt got it from the Columbia Record Club and didn't want it.  "Small World" "You Are Beautiful" "Namely You" and some others.  I love that album still!

And some 45's (Joey, those were 7 inch records with a big hole in the middle that had one song on each side).

Joanie Sommers "Johnny Get Angry" b/w "A Summer Place"....Joanie's version of the latter is still my favorite EVER of that vocal....beautiful. On the great RED Warner Bros label!

Connie Francis "Vacation" - I don't think I ever played the flip side. On the MGM black labe.

Bobby Vinton "Roses Are Red", on the EPIC yellow label.

What?

Again, you ask?

Yes.

Sigh.

And, again, waiting for a sinus tab to take effect.

I am feeling much better, however, and the severity of symptoms has abated.

I am also fasting as I am having some blood drawn a few hours from now for some annual bloodwork with my doctor, whom I see one week from today.  I hope I shall be getting my influenza vaccine on that date, as well.

Has anyone else here received his or her influenza vaccine yet?

[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]SPOILER POTENTIAL SPOILER POTENTIAL SPOILER POTENTIAL SPOILER POTENTIAL SPOILER POTENTIAL[/move]

"Lost" -- Last night's episode was particularly good, I thought.  Sun and Jen are two of my favorite characters and their current activities, plus the back story material leading up to their first encounter, was poignant and moving.

I am intrigued, to say the least, about "the others"...about who they are, why they are, and how it is they move about in such secrecy, spreading fear among those who have encountered them before.

And what is happening in the next two weeks that we won't get a new episode until three weeks from now?

Is ABC doing something special?

I recorded, but have not watched, last night's "Invasion."  I'm still very skeptical about this show, but it's attractively cast and the story moves quite well.

We still shall see...

I watched, yesterday afternoon, "The 7 Faces of Dr. Lao."  It was the first time I'd seen the film, I am surprised to say, since I thought I had it on VHS (in storage), but I'm fairly certain I'd remember having seen it.

What a fun movie!  The Dr. Lao/George Pal elements kept it just on the edgier side of being "Disneyesque."  I was a tad disconcerted by the actions of the young boy at the very end.  While he has seen his mother soften toward a man the boy respects and wants her to see, he is nearly grief-stricken that Dr. Lao has left town without him.  I could understand if it was for leaving without saying goodbye.  But he seems nearly hysterical that he is being left behind...as reaction that is strange since Dr. Lao told him earlier that he couldn't be part of the circus.

It struck me as a wrong note...but perhaps it was the only note that could be obtained from the lad.

Tomovoz is gone.  Without comment.  Possibly without even having seen any comments made by me about his "lurking" status.

Just...POOF...he's vanished from lurkdom.

Perhaps, though, the Birds got him...swooped in upon him and disconnected his power and -- even now -- are roosting on every square inch of his property waiting for him to dare set foot outside.

I do hope Magnus and Fosca will protect him.

Good morning, all!  I slept late since I will not go into the recording office until noon.  I missed the glamour of laundry yesterday, so I have to face it this morning.

Dear Friend BK, the Drama Book Shop always had a hard time getting payment from a certain London book shop.  In the early 1990s the DBS wa their source for American titles and their account was always in arrears.

TOD:  Because my family was realitively poor, a lot of my albums were budget items my Mother found in supermarket bins that she thought I might like.  I had a lot of Camden/Hill Bowen show titles and a lot of 101 Strings.  I remember few albums from my childhood that I loved, but they included:
Whitmore and Lowe (duo pianists): Major Classics for Minors
Warner Brothers TV stars Christmas album
  The King & I soundtrack
Hansel and Gretel film soundtrack with Anna Russell
  Several Disney song collections

Grrrrrrrrr...

Two days ago I put a DVD into my shopping cart at Amazon.  Today, when I went to add another item to my cart, I discovered that the price of the DVD had increased from 11.98 to 13.98.  I checked the price of the same DVD on DeepDiscountsDVD and it was 9.98!

I wrote a quick note to Amazon asking them why I should place the order though them and not at DeepDiscounts, but I doubt I'll get a satisfying reply.

Grrrrrrrrrrr...

The only kid's records I can remember as a kid were some Disney records culled from their films, but not soundtrack recordings. For example, Darlene Gillespie from THE MICKEY MOUSE CLUB made recordings of "Once Upon a Dream" from SLEEPING BEAUTY, and I played that endlessly since SLEEPING BEAUTY was my favorite movie.

Even though MGM made issuing soundtrack recordings common starting in the 1940s, I don't think I had access to any Disney soundtracks until I was a teenager. I loved all of the Disney films, and when I'd stumble across SNOW WHITE or PETER PAN on a Disneyland (budget-priced) soundtrack LP, I'd snatch it up. But some of those Disneyland albums, like ALICE IN WONDERLAND and LADY AND THE TRAMP were not  taken from the soundtracks but were studio albums with in-house singers doing the vocals. Those were always disappointments.

I'd order more often from Deep Discount but their free shipping is erratic. SOmetimes the order comes in a reasonable amount of time, and sometimes one waits weeks for in-stock items to arrive.

As a teen, I also found Danny Kaye Sings HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN and TUBBY THE TUBA and played it a lot. I also ADORED the comedy album THE SMOTHERS BROTHERS READ AESOP'S FABLES. It was designed for children, but it made me laugh as much as their regular comedy albums did.

Catching up:

Bumpers:  BK, virtually the same thing happened to DS Betsy (as a spectator, not a participant, thankfully) just a couple of days ago.  She called me from a parking lot downtown and she had that "I've just had an accident" voice (she's had a few, which is putting it diplomatically ;) ), but it turns out she had just witnessed the very same thing happen that happened to you--a lady was pulling out of a space, hooked the bumper of the car next to her and pulled both her and the other car's bumpers clean off.  She then was trying to stick her bumper back on her car.  Betsy said behind her bumper was a big styrofoam piece that had also fallen off.  Yes, bumpers are a joke, as any crash test dummy will tell you.   ;D

Mystery solved, I think, department:  The hits are still coming fast and furious on my Farmer article.  I noticed that almost all of them were coming from MSN searches, so I went to MSN and it turns out they have a "cover story" on "Explosive Roles for Women in Film," featuring, of course, Jessica Lange as Frances, so I think these are people reading that article and then wanting to find out more.  I've had more web hits in the last few days than I normally get in a month.

7 Faces of Dr. Lao:  This is not (repeat, not) a joke--Michael Jackson owns the rights to this film and has been talking about starring in a remake of it for years.  Let the jokes begin.....

TOD:  I had the red vinyl Gene Autry "Rudolph" album that I loved, and also the 45 of "Mr. Ed," that I remember playing over and over.  I have never been able to find the LP version of Stoo Hample's The Silly Book (called, appropriately, The Silly Record).  I would love to get a copy of that.

Powerball:   :'(  (Does that tell you how we did?).  Now of course I'm wondering if I will end up knowing any of the winners (Oregon had 5, count 'em, 5 winners, including the big jackpot winner.  The other 4 won $850K each, not a bad prize).  To quote Amanda Green:  every time a friend of mine succeeds, a little piece of me dies.  ;)

Hey, There, It's Yogi Bear!--this was a send-away from Keloggs that I absolutely loved!

DR MATTH is correct about DDD delivery - so anything I WANT and MUST HAVE that I am not going to get at WalMart or Target (surprisingly well-priced DVD's) I get at Amazon.  Otherwise, I wait....and wait....and wait.

And yes those Disney NON-soundtracks were always disappointing to bring home.  Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr....especially since the Disneyland singers were NEVER too swift to begin with.  I can bet tbat Walt scraped the bottom of the barrel for a lot of them....   And they are still being sold!

Last night, I went to see a play two friends of mine were in and another directed, a kind of whirlwind tour through the life of Edith Wharton. It was well-done.

While I had time to kill, I stopped by the Virgin Megastore, and there I did purchase HALLELUJAH I'M A BUM! And you know, if BK did not get in a fender bender, I never would have ended up buying that DVD. Funny thing that.

Also, I found that 50 Musicals box set, and bought it, because I've been wanting to see THE GREAT GABBO. DIXIANA is also on there, so that's a bonus.

You're right about Target and Wal-Mart (and Circuit City) having good DVD prices. None of those stores are very close to me, so I have to figure in gas prices and sales tax when I'm deicidng if I'll internet order or drive to Wal-Mart to pick up something. It also depends if I'm going there anyway to get needed household items like soap or toothpaste or duct tape (!) .

I bought a couple of those Disney storybook albums because they had the songs taken from soundtrack surrounded by some woman reading the story. But at least the songs were from the films and one had an easier time reliving the excitement of the movie listening to them.

If someone had told me when I was growing up that I would one day be able to own home copies of all of those Disney films I rushed to see every time they appeared, I would NOT have been able to contain my excitement and desire for time to pass so we could get to the home video era. I still find it hard to believe I can watch FANTASIA or DUMBO whenever I want to.

I always liked the ALICE IN WONDERLAND lp, which was the only form available since the soundtrack was tied up in a rights problem, if I remember correctly.  Darlene Gillespie certainly sang better than Kathryn Beaumont, and the "March of the Card" orchestration was quite nice.  Some of the character voices were pathetic, alas, but it was a great fill-in until the soundtrack became available.

Forgot to mention in my catching up post:  Gregg Toland once stated that Frances Farmer was the most beautiful woman he ever photographed, which is high praise indeed.  And she never looked more radiant than she did in "Come and Get It," the film Toland photographed her in.

Disney/Disneyland soundtracks:  Well, try growing up in a household with a Sears manager for a father.  :)  Sears used to issue its own knock-off "soundtracks" and I'll never forget how angry I was at my Dad when he brought home the Sears version of Mary Poppins when my best friend Corey had just gotten the "real" soundtrack.  I think this was the beginning of that long slippery slope of collecting "authentic" items.   :P

So what would y'all prefer:  a DR. LAO Broadway musical or a movie remake (supply the stars and creative team.)

TOD:

For some reason, as a young kid, I had a real affinity for the MARY POPPINS album that came out that featured Marni Nixon - actually preferred it to the soundtrack.

Used to love a song called "Dilly Dally" (I can still remember the lyric "When it's worth doing, do it well, Not like a turtle in its shell, just keep your eyes wide open and run pell-mell."  But I always thought they were singing about Pell-Mell Cigarettes so found it confusing - catchy but confusing.)

Loved the H.R. Pufnstuf collection of songs, especially "Oranges Smoranges" sung by Witchie-poo.

And the title song from the Banana Splits TV show.

There was also a song that I totally loved called "Fire Island Ferry" which I had the 45 for, but have since been unable to locate.  (It had the lyric "Get ready, world, another weekend lover is coming" which when I was a kid I took to mean that the singer just loved the weekends.  :)

The GREENWILLOW cast LP was a hard one to locate for me for awhile. Imagine the torment of coming across an album GREENWILLOW!, then in small print, "some cheapo orchestra presents the music from..."

Though now, I would buy the instrumental album, just because it's odd that such a thing was created for a musical that didn't run very long.

As for a new episode of LOST not coming on for three weeks:

You know they never have more than four or five new episodes of any show in a row before reruns set in. They make 22-24 shows to go through a 40 week TV season, so reruns have to show up sometimes, especially since they have to save new episodes for the sweeps months of November, February, and May.

It's just business as usual.

When I was a kid I listened to a lot of the Disney albums. They had Picture Discs - clear LPs with photo collages inside.  I loved them. I had MARY POPPINS, THE FOX AND THE HOUND, LADY AND THE TRAMP and a few others. I also enjoyed the soundtrack to THE MUPPET MOVIE. Not only did I enjoy a good Disney or Muppet record, but I also listened to the music that my mom listened to. I remember listening to 45's and 33's with her - Franki Valli, Juice Newton, Barbra Streisand, Rod Stewart and Diana Ross and the Supremes. We used to dance around the living room while listening to "Oh What a Night (December, 1963)."

When we moved to England, I discovered two new things - cassette tapes and Story Teller. Story Teller was a bi-monthly children's magazine that featured short stories and songs and each magazine came with a cassette tape. The tape featured British celebs reading the stories in the magazines so you could read along, complete with sound effects and music. Sort of like radio theatre for kids. I LOVED those Story Tellers and had a pretty complete collection of them. I'm not sure where they are now. They certainly helped me learn to read, though, and they kept me busy, which kept my parents happy.

I remember when Mom came home from either Korvettes or Two Guys and presented me with a Mary Poppins soundtrack knock-off.  I immediately knew it wasn't the real thing because the cover (a rather dark picture of MP landing with her umbrella on the street to an awaiting Michael, Jane and Bert) was not the same as the cover that was featured in the record club ads, but I gamely played it anyway.  Fortunately, my mom (from whom I inherited very discriminating ears) stopped by to listen and agreed with me that it didn't sound like Julie Andrews or Dick Van Dyke were singing.  The following week, the actual Buena Vista soundtrack was in my mitts.

Sadly, the power ball was not won by me, because I did not buy a ticket  :(

The Washington State lottery has a couple of slogans:

"You can't win if you don't play."

and

"Chances of winning, 1 in 7 million...siginificantly higher if you don't play."

I haven't seen a lottery commercial in several years, but they were very cute and humerous. :)

As for children's albums, my sister and I had the Banana Splits TV soundtrack (I got a CD of it earlier this year!) and several British group compilations sold by either Ronco or K-Tel!

I can also vaguely remember having several 45s (but you played them on 33 1/3 speed) that were of (mostly) old American folk songs.  "My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean" is the only one that I can think of right now, but once in a while, I remember fragments of another song about trains or something like that.

We had one of those record players that you closed the cover to play them but my parents also had another record player that had four speeds!  78, 45, 33 1/3 and 16!  Anyone ever hear of something like this?  We used to have a lot of fun playing different records at all the different speeds.

Oh yes, we were SURE it was "My body lies over the ocean..."  We were SSURE!

My first couple of record players also play 16 3/4 or some other fraction.  And yes we played records at different speeds to hear how they sounded.  That's how I heard David Seville singing the Chipmonks in a regular voice.  Although my favorite Chipmonk album was The Chipmonks Sing The Beatles!

I'm up, I'm up.

I used to love Whitmore and Lowe, although I can't remember which of their albums I had.  Loved them, Ferrante and Teicher, and Gold and Fizdale.

Love to hear some opposing opinions to Batman Begins - then we can do our own version of Ebert and Roeper right here at haineshisway.com.

I love instrumental versions of shows and have since I was a wee sprig of a twig of a tad of a lad of a youth.  A surprising number of flops got instrumental or jazz versions - Greenwillow, Here's Love, Subways are for Sleeping, are three off the top of my head.  What they were doing on top of my head is anyone's guess.  And where is anyone?

My favorite records as as small child were a Disney's Bambi LP. It had all the original songs from the movie and a lady narrating the story. I also had Snow White, Cinderella, and a couple of others, but the Bambi one was the one that I loved.

Also listened to an album of Swan Lake over and over again, as well as one of The Grand Canyon Suite.

DR JMK - thanks for the Toland quote.  I think sometimes people think our obsession with Frances might be a bit misplaced, but I would encourage them to take a look at a couple of her movies.

No less a personage than Mr Howard Hawks (who directed Frances in about 3/4 of one movie) said:  "The only two actresses who can be mentioned in the same breath with [Frances Farmer] talent wise are Carole Lombard and Rosalind Russell."

Hawks also used Frances' voice as an example when he was teaching Lauren Bacall to lower her timbre!

She was complaining of pain but we kept putting ice packs on her gave her some tylenol and out her to bed last night.  I never got online becasue AOL was still not dialing into my local number for whatever reason.

This morning Victoria came into our room and I almost fell over, over night her face swelled up and her poor right eye was completely swelled shut

We have just come back from the doctor who prescribed compresses of warm tea bags, Benedryl and Zyrtec .

I'll try and pop in later.

I don't recall many kiddie albums as having much impact on me.

I once had a migraine and "Teddy Bear's Picnic" kept going through my head.  I have to tell you that the little 45 rpm in my meagre collection was smashed to smithereens afterward.

I still have, somewhere, a 45 of Georgia Gibbs singing "The Hucklebuck."  And there are 45s of Bing Crosby and Andy Williams and Elvis Presley.

My first LPs were the original "Sing Along With the Chipmunks" (and I loved "Ragtime Cowboy Joe" because I knew the song from having seen "Hello, Frisco, Hello" on TV). a Mantovani album with "Exodus" and other favorites, including "Mr. Wonderful", which was my favorite track on that album.

It didn't take me long to discover Disneyland records and then, when I least suspected it, I was "into" film music and among my first were "Exodus," "To Kill A Mockingbird," "The Robe", "The Diary of Anne Frank," "The Wizard of Oz" and "Bells Are Ringing."  Many were acquired as cutouts.  I did get "Mary Poppins" through the RCA Record Club and have one of the first issues of the soundtrack on the RCA label, rather than the Buena Vista label...same jacket, different label.

Hoppy was my favorite.  During some Christmas or other, I had a Hoppy outfit consisting of hat, shirt and guns.  My mother has a photo of me wearing them somewhere.

I later got (and no longer have, drat the luck) a Hopalong Cassidy wristwatch.

Later, but while I was still a kid  (9 or 10  instead of 5 or 6), I got a Paladin gun/holster set for Christmas.  Even had the business cards (Have Gun, Will Travel!  Wire Paladin, San Francisco).

Instead, I immediately put on CAT PEOPLE recorded off TCM last night. I had read some reviews of the Val Lewton DVDs that said the more famous of the films had the worse transfers on the DVDs, and I suspect CAT EPOPLE being one of the most famous means that finding good elements must have been difficult. This looked fine about 70% of the time, but then there was that other 30% that had water spots and other print damage.

The movie was as atmospheric as always.

I read that, too. It's a Sunday night during holiday season when it's almost guaranteed a low audience. Of course, they could have chosen a Saturday night when there would have been NO audience.

Just to remind that Kelsey Grammer's version of A CHRISTMAS CAROL aired on SUnday night last year during December to DISMAL ratings.

And ONCE UPON A MATTRESS isn't even a holiday-themed musical.

Wonder how many songs from the original will make it into this version. No TV version yet has done the music justice.

BTW, Richard Chamnberlain is actually playing a gay character on WILL & GRACE tonight. I'll be watching for sure.

I guess Annie Oakley was before your time, DR Jane.

LOL.   I wanted to be a cowboy.  My parents weren't thrilled about that and tried very hard to convince me I wanted an Annie Oakley outfit.  I persisted and finally got my cowboy outfit (generic), with hat, holster, guns, etc. and even got to wear jeans.

A Paladin outfit, cards included is so cool.

Hello all just stopping for a quick visit . Thank you all for the "Vixter Vibes" they seem to be working, she  is down to a slight swelling of the lower eye lid and the portion from the cheekbone to the eye but the top of her eye and the rest of that sideof her face is just about back to normal... In fact she felt so much better she asked to go to church choir rehearsal from where I must collect her in 1/2 hour.  Now that the panic has subsided I wish I had thought to snap a picture!!  ;D

Jane,  thanks for the Danise update , I was wondering if I should call her at home  but I think I'll leave it a day and let her rest.

I am concerned, however,  that she may be in the path of this latest hurricane....it looks as if it's expected to go straight through her part of Florida. :P

Hadn't bought any records in awhile, so I stopped by the neighborhood thrift shop to see if they had anything new, and they had a big haul.
-I got an LP by The Art of Noise, that I used to own.
-A Morricone Soundtrack to a film I never heard of, MALAMONDO
-An Enoch Light dance album that teaches the Frug, the Hully Gully, and others
-The cast LP to some odd cabaret show: "Julius Monk's Plaza 9 presents The New Post-Prandial Prank, DIME A DOZEN." Hard to tell just what it is, but it's two records recorded by Archie Bleyer on Cadence in 1963.
-Roly Daniels "Let's Fall In Love." I just liked this sentence on the back..."Roly Daniels, born in India in the 1940s, certainly couldn't have chosen a less likely place to launch a career in country music!"
-Since I like to own the most wobegone of movie and show LPs, I found some small-town theatre's cast recording of "Camelot" which looks like it is from 1967 or so.

TOD:  I remember a Bing Crosby LP with  "Swinging On A Star" on it, also "High Hopes" and "Mares eat Oats"

I had a Peter & The Wolf LP, and Bambi LP, Alvin & The Chipmunks Christmas  LP (my Dad still has that and plays it every Christmas) and the first 45 I bought with my very own money when I was 6 which was the Beatles "A Hard's Day Night" with "I Should Have Known Better" on the B side

Later I had at least one King Family  LP, a Trini Lopez (what were my parents thinking?  That was a Christmas present for a 9 year old, I remember playing "Fever" over and over  until I figured out what he was talking about ) 101 Strings play Love Is Blue....

Those industrial shows can be quite enjoyable. I have one that is from a LIFE magazine holiday or anniversary party or something. It's called "Life, A Revue." There are songs about how to attract more subscribers, songs about why magazines are better than TV, odes to Governor Rockefeller and other time capsule material.

They are fun because they were never intended to be heard outside of a certain group of people, and yet the effort put into some of them is substantial.

If not "The Robe" or "Spartacus" could it be Demetrius And The Gladiators, the sequel to Androcles?  I must admit a tendency for my memory to combine these movies, therefore I don’t trust said memory that says it is “Spartacus”.

"Diana" is going on her way to be an Archery target at the end of "The Robe". Maybe she met Demetrius on the way.

Aughghghghghghgh!  :D

If Jean Simmons was ever thrown to the lions, it would have been in "Androcles and the Lion."

However...it may be you are remembering "Quo Vadis" in which Deborah Kerr was tied to a post in the colosseum and wild lions were set loose.  She was saved by another character played by Buddy Baer who killed the lions.  This was near the end of the film, and a coup took place in which Nero was driven from the arena and hid behind some palace drapes.  Robert Taylor rescued Kerr from her bonds and the Christians all went free.

"The Robe" did star Richard Burton, Jean Simmons and Victor Mature.  "Demetrius and the Gladiators" was its sequel and starred Mature along with Susan Hayward.  There was arena fighting in this film, but no women were thrown to any lions.

Simmons later appeared as Varinia in "Spartacus."  In neither of these films were there lions.

No....Victor reunited with Michael Rennie (TheBig Fisherman) and found anew his Christianity.

Susan (Messalina) stood beside her husband Claudius and vowed to be a proper wife for Caesar (historically inaccurate, of course...Messalina was the one who took on Rome's most prolific prostitutes in a brothel competition, and won handily).

I'm now wondering if you are remembering Debra Paget and Louis Jourdan in "Bird of Paradise".

I did not see "Joe vs the Volcano" after hearing the ending was horrible.  I'm sorry to say I don't remember, or never saw "Bird of Paradise".

It is one of the biblical movies.  At the end the, very much in love, couple dies because they won’t denounce their Christianity.  You don’t see them die, the camera just fades off into the clouds or something.

I've been on the phone non-stop for two hours.  First, talking to Phil Reno, the musical director of The Drowsy Chaperone - I'm doing a little recording for that show (used for the opening of the show) soon, so I'm having to make all those arrangements for the recording date.  Then I was on solidifying Diana Canova's numbers for the LACC show, then on the phone with Cynthia Carle trying to figure out if she'll be taking part (she did The Apple Tree while a student, and has appeared on and off B'way in Is There Life After High School and The Crucifer of Blood).  Then with the gent who'll be engineering the Chaperone session (Vinnie is booked on a film date - I'm using our assistant on many of our albums - he did the Kevin Spirtas single and he's very good and knows the routine well).  And shortly I shall be on my way to a dinner meeting with the LACC musical director, Rob Bowers.  I really didn't need to eat the large pastrami sandwich at Jerry's, but I had a craving which could not be denied.

Well, I learned today that the Styne employee who held up my DARLING OF THE DAY contract from Sept 2004 to now is telling folk that I screwed up by not finishing the score for the April 2005 Muft performances.  As I told him in April, I don't work without a contract and your delays screwed up the dates for the copyist to prepare the parts.  I will not be a scapegoat for administrative incompetence.

Good for you Larry. Don't let them give you any crap!!

Kelsey Grammer's A CHRISTMAS CAROL was DISMAL.

TOTD:  DR Colin was (and still is) fond of "Sparky and The Magic Piano". Also Tubby the Tuba (To which I seem to have a resemblance these days).

LOL.

I saw BIRD OF PARADISE on Saturday Night at the Movies when I was around ten or eleven years old.  Even at that young age, seeing Louis Jourdan barechested and wearing only a sarong in that movie may well have been the exact moment I realized that I was gay!

Once I finished THE SEVENTH VICTIM (OK with a surprising ending), instead of starting another Val Lewton, I put in the overly Technicolored LOVELY TO LOOK AT on videotape.

The tape box says clearly that it's a new Technicolor Restoration, and I guess that's why it looks SO saturated. Usually videotape looks pale on these larger screen TVs, but not LOVELY TO LOOK AT. Very bright and deep colors.

Good Evening!

Back from yet another performance of Joseph... Another good night, and a slightly larger audience too.  However, I did notice that TicketPlace, DC's equivalent of TKTS, has already put up a block of 1/2 price tickets for each of the remaining shows this week.  Which - as I suspected - means the show is not selling that well.  Ah, well... As long as my check clears...

;)

*Although, we're being paid by the same producer that currently owes me two other checks for work I've done for them over the past two months, so...  Hopefully, the check for this gig won't be "floating" and/or "in the mail".

Then I watched NIGHT STALKER, and really enjoyed it for the first time. And what I liked about it was that the female reporter that's been teaming with Carl and giving him grief just signed off and let Carl do his own thing.

The show is SO much better with the lone reporter trying to sniff out the truth. I will never understand why the man who reimagined the show thought having a female reporter tagging along with Kolchak would be a good idea.

Then I watched WILL & GRACE. It was a trifle funnier than last week's snore fest, but not by much. The revelation about Richard Chamberlain was sort of a neat twist that I didn't see coming.

Sad note: Alec Baldwin used to be one of the sexiest and most desirable actors in the world. Even when he started putting on weight, I didn't mind because he still looked good to me. But tonight, he came into a sauna scene with just a towel wrapped around his waist, and I think this must be the moment any sexiness quotient I thought he retained was lost.

The thing that has impressed me the most with the Val Lewtons that I've watched is the startling use of shadows. A critic friend of mine who died a few years ago wrote a book on Val Lewton's films and their marvelous use of shadows, but I had truly forgotten how impressive they are in these movies.

And for those interested parties, there's a "open letter" to Joe Brooks over on talkinbroadway.com

Here's the opening and closing paragraphs:

Quote
An open letter to Joseph Brooks, whose new musical In My Life just opened at the Music Box.

Dear Mr. Brooks:

Congratulations! You've achieved something that few people ever will: You've written an original musical that's opened on Broadway. That takes a lot of determination, courage, and fortitude. I won't speculate on how it compares to making and scoring your own film, which you did with You Light Up My Life in 1977, but it's nonetheless a noteworthy accomplishment.

What's even more remarkable is that, as with your movie, you've done it all yourself: producing; directing; writing the music, lyrics, and libretto. Those are five hefty hats to wear - many of musical theatre's most respected talents never attempted so much. Lyricists have written musical books, composers have written lyrics, and some brave souls have written everything. But even they generally stop there, because they realize how vital collaboration is in the creation of great musicals.

After all, even the best writers need someone to help shape the material and provide an outsider's perspective. A writer can easily get trapped in his own little world, especially if he's directing his own work, and not realize what he's doing that's preventing his vision from being adequately communicated to the audience. In short, he needs someone to say "no" every once in a while.

And, Mr. Brooks, as you have apparently not been so blessed during the creative process of In My Life, I'm going to do that for you now.

<<<CUT>>>

I must be honest with you, though: I doubt In My Life will find the success those shows have. But whatever happens, you've likely written the weirdest Broadway musical that most people will ever see. Not the worst, mind you, or even the worst this season - Lennon and The Blonde in the Thunderbird have lowered that bar farther than you could ever reach. But you still have a lot to learn, though please, don't lose your passion or individuality. We're in desperate need of them right now.

Regardless, welcome to Broadway, Mr. Brooks, and feel free to come back again. But do us - and yourself - a favor: Don't return alone.

DR Ron Pulliam - Have you tried salt water up your nose?  Very old-fashioned, but still very effective.

I wish I had a clever retort...something-somthing-up-yours...but the truth is, Yes, I have tried salt water up my nose.  I even have a nasal passage "flusher" that works on one nostril at a time.

The trick is to flush one nostril with a saline mixture until the saline starts exiting the "other" nostril.

Then you switch nostrils.

The end result, for me, though, is that queasy feeling I always got in pools when I snuffled water up my nose.

I'm sure it works well, though.  It cleans out whatever is residing in the nostrils.

Thing is, I sneeze so often that it accomplishes the same thing.

Tomovoz,-LOL.  That was my first thought but you said it wasn't "The Robe".  I know, it really wasn't cause they weren't tossed to the lions.

Well, they weren't pushed off a cliff, either...LOL.

Caligula demanded that Tribune Marcellus Gallio renew his oath of allegiance to the Emperor and to denounce his God.

Marcellus renewed his vow, but refused to denounce God.  For this, Caligula condemned Marcellus to the archery field.  Diana, who loved Marcellus, joined him as the Emperor voiced protests.

Diana announced before the assembly that she'd rather die with Marcellus than to spend one more hour in an empire ruled by Caligula.

Aren't she and Burton heading to their deaths at the end of "The Robe"?

As they walked, escorted, from Caligula's throne room, she handed over the Robe to another Christian.  Marcellus and Diana walked out amid the strains of an Hallelujah as the throne room faded out and clouds and blue sky replaced it.

Into a Better Kingdom.
