Well, you've read the notes, you've sped through the notes, the notes have sped through you, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they were just pulled over for speeding and the cowcops are citing them for a mooving violation.

And the word of the day is: PROSAIC!

Prosaic: Didn't that replace lithium?

I did four years of French at High School. It was useful in France last year! I did not and do not speak it with any fluency at all. Simple structure in the present tense is about all I can manage.
Most Schools here now teach Japanese or Indonesian as the second language.

Good news - my meeting is not a breakfast meeting - it would seem to be at three o'clock or thereabouts. Whew! I shall try to sleep in tomorrow, and let me tell you, I deserve it.

Still working on this paper. I'm a little more than halfway through, for those who are keeping track of these things.
As for the topic of the day, I am quite fluent in B.S. Other than that, I can sorta fake my way through Spanish. I had to take two years of Spanish in high school, and then I told my teacher Senora Ginsburg that I would take a year of it in college. When I took the placement test, it was after an entire summer of forgetting everything I'd learned (which wasn't much), so I didn't understand anything that was on the test. I was supposed to read an article and then answer multiple choice questions, all in Spanish, and then move on to the next article. I read maybe half of the first article and about the first two questions. I didn't know what any of it meant, so I just filled in random multiple choice answers. On a total fluke, I got an almost perfect score and got put in one of the highest Spanish classes they had. That class was even more confusing than the test. I survived by nodding my head every once in a while and saying, "Si" when everyone else said it.
Here's a conversation I had with my Spanish teacher that year:
She asked me a question in Spanish.
I said, "Si."
She said, "Really? You have life insurance?"
I said, "I thought you were asking me if I like ice cream."
I have no idea how I passed that class.

I speak no language but the King's (Queen's) English. I think the entire world should speak English. It is a beautiful language. In High School, I had three years of French. I can speak it not at all. I can read it ever so slightly. Had four semesters of German in College. Same with French, can't speak it, can read it a little.

Celebrity sighting at Kevin's show - the lovely Bruce Vilanch in attendance.

I speak only English, although I know a handful of French and Eyetalian words. I would like to learn Japanese, and dear reader Hisaka taught me how to say something like "Don't snore."
-
I took one semester of Spanish in high school - I do really good accents, but I have no memory of any Spanish words except Me llamo, and hombre, and mi casa es su casa, and que hora es.
-
I'm still winding down. Even though I'm exhausted, I'm not ready for bed yet. In fact, I'm doing the Lambada (The Forbidden Dance).
Sad that Pogue could not join us at the show - he would have very much enjoyed Miss Tammy Minoff's nurse's outfit, oh, yes, he would very much have enjoyed what little of it there was.

DR Danise, thank you for searching the word PEPLUM.
And glad to know you’re safe from the hurricane. Still Safety vibes to all who lives in where Wilma goes.
DRs Jrand and Elmore, thank you for the descriptions and photos of PEPLUM.
I’ve never heard that gladiator movies are called Peplum film. I understand very well, thank you!

I’ve learned Italian the last five years intermittently. The pronunciation is very similar to the one of my own language, Japanese, so it’s quite easy for me to pronounce it, unlike English which has obviously different sounds like “th” and “r” and “v”, which have been always troubling me. We all, Japanese, learn English in High School for no less than six years as the second language, BUT nobody can speak it well after the looong work, like me… It’s a problem.

Glad to know you remember that I taught you some Japanese, dear BK, and now would like to know if you still remember them…. :-*

Less than two pages to go.
Just thought I'd share.

Good morning, all! Well, the rains have landed, and I expect nothing but soggy mail today. Today I have to finish edits on two Arlen scores for this fershluggenah Chicago concert next week, and I am not looking forward to going outside. Beyond that I have nothing to report.
-
Sounds as if the show was a blockbuster! Congratulations....doing in one day what it took The Dinah Shore Chevy Show seven days to do!
I took three years of High School Spanish....can speak un poco and understand un poco tambien.
I also do some sign language....however it is SIGNED ENGLISH which is not considered politically correct by the rabid DEAF community who have come up with its own confusing system called AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE with a syntax calculated to keep its users in the Deaf Ghetto and out of the main stream of life. "Everyone will HAVE to learn to speak it, we are NOT going to speak THEIR language." This is what was told to the kids at the Deaf School where I worked. And when they graduated, they fully expected EVERYONE to know how to use ASL. It ain't gonna happen.
This was also the time when NO VOICE IN THE CLASSROOM was implemented, so that those children and teachers with even partial hearing could NOT use the voice to teach or learn. ASL only.
ANYWAY....I remember Signed English, but I don't want to remember any of my ASL.
-
MEDIUM was good again last night. Although with 15 minutes left, it was nowhere near concluding. It almost seems to me like they need an extra 15 minutes for each show! But again it was quite unpredictable and very enjoyable. Definitely one of my favorite shows!

...I think the entire world should speak English. It is a beautiful language....
Most of the world does speak English. It has become the primary language used internationally for business, science, and diplomacy. (Take that, France! This is our revenge for your foisting margarine upon us.)
At the same time, it's a good thing that English is not the only language out there. Otherwise, how would we English-speakers be able to steal from everyone else?
For myself, I'm the product of the California laws that required all students to take a foreign language during Jr. High and High School. I was forced, by law, into taking classes in Spanish and French, sequentially. It was a waste of my time and injurious to my self-esteem. This was long before self-esteem was protected by law in the California school system, however. Bleh.
If I had any talent for learning foreign languages, I suppose Spanish would be my first choice. Even here in Delaware, we get enough Spanish-speaking customers that it would be convenient to converse with them at the store. Instead, I'm limited to improvising some kind of sign language, which looks silly.

Has the lovely Bruce Vilanch grown his beard back, or is he still playing Edna somewhere?

Speaking of languages - tomorrow evening I am going to teach a cast of a high school production of GODSPELL to sign "Day by Day."
My friend Vickie is directing it and thinks it will be interesting and different, and something new to for the kids in the cast.
I agree. Hope it will be fun. The signs are interesting, and I am using a mix of Signed English and ASL (bleh) that does have some nice religious imagery that SE doesn't....so I guess it will be my own bastard version of the song.
-
Then I must be perfect in greasy food and snacks!
-
And with that, I must prepare to go to work. Laters.

I took Spanish in Jr. High School for one semester. Took German in High School for, I think, 2 years. At the same time I studied Japanese on my own during study hall.
Spanish I recall nothing of, German I can say some words, and understand a tiny bit, Japanese I can say the words but can't understand most of them.
But it was fun learning the languages and studying the countries.
I would still love to further learn Japanese and also learn Hindi...although I have picked up a few words here and there just from watching all of those Bollywood movies.

I would, once again, like to thank each and every one of you for extending your congratulations and good wishes to me on my acting awards yesterday. How wonderful it is to have a group of friends (yes, friends) who are so supportive of each other in both good times and bad. My own sister didn't bother to send me back a pat on the back, but between 20 and 30 of you did offer your good wishes. What an incredible group of people you are!

TOD:
I took five years of Spanish:
Spanish I, Spanish II,in junior high and in high school Spanish I, Spanish II and finally Spanish III
We used the "ALM" system where we brought home records
(records are what preceded cassette tapes, and cd's I add for the benefit of Sandra, Joey)
We had to listen to these and repeat them over and over and over...... everytime someone mentions Spanish to me my mind immediately repeats the following... I'm no better than one of Pavlov's pooches
Antes de la Clase
Hola Pedro.
Hola Maria.
Como Esta?
Estoy bien gracias, y tu?
Bien, gracias.
Quien es ese chico?
Es un amigo mio.
Como se llama?
Se llama Juan, como se lo presento.

Topic of the day:
With twelve years of Yeshivah, I'm reasonably fluent in Hebrew. I understand it better than I speak it, because of how complicated the genders and tenses are, but my Yeshivah elementary and high school days were close to thirty years ago.
I took a couple of years of French in high school, and did reasonably well in the classes. But as I saw in a brief trip to Paris a few years back, I retained almost none of it and couldn't carry on anything remotely resembling a French conversation.

For page 2:
A "mazel-tov" hora for TCB!

Good morning!
Fall has definitely arrived! It was in the low 40s last night and is expected maybe to reach 60 today (it didn't get to 60 yesterday).
But the sky is so blue it almost hurts your eyes, and my favorite time of the year has arrived in all its glory!

It could have been worse. He could have gone as Billy Banana and been peeled to death!

I took two years of Latin in high school followed by two years of French.
The undergraduate college I attended required students who took two years of a foreign language in high school and who expected to continue with that language in college to take a proficiency test and if one failed it, he would be required to take first year college French FOR NO CREDIT.
I had a lousy second year French teacher in high school (the students honestly knew more than she did), so I decided that I'd switch to Spanish in college, and I took two years of it. The Spanish professor I had for three of those four semesters begged me to major in Spanish. I loved it, and it came easily to me, but I knew I'd be the only Spanish major in my class, and I didn't relish facing the work and classes alone, so I declined.
Now I can read a tiny bit of Spanish, but the only time I ever used anything I had learned was my last year of teaching when I got two Mexican students who spoke very little English in my class. Officially, they were enrolled in my class, but actually when the time for class came, they went to an ESL class, and I would help them with their work in there when they needed it.

To answer the question about GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK possibly being a disguised political diatribe:
The film takes place in 1958, long after McCarthy had been shown up and brought down and when Murrow's stand had been venerated. He is delivering a speech to a room full of his peers extolling them to seek the truth and be willing risk all in the searching and reportage of that truth. The bulk of the film flashes back to his McCathy standoff as evidence of his practicing what he preached.
If one wishes to apply that speech to the present-day political climate, it's certainly there for the doing, but I would never call it a diatribe nor would I say that it's anything except the truth spoken by a man whose life seems to have based on seeking the truth and talking about it when it was discovered.
-
Yes, I did record MEDIUM in high definition. I guess if there is transmission problem, I'll have to wait for the rebroadcast. I'll make a note of which episode it was and then watch for it in reruns.
Had I been watching it live, I could have switched over from the HD Time-Warner cable broadcast to the over-the-air HD broadcast from my local station. SOmetimes, the problem is with the cable company's transmission rather than from the network itself. But, as I was watching CSI: MIAMI at the time, that was impossible to know.
I'll have a full report later this afternoon.
-
Good morrow, gentle souls.
Languages:
Well, I took three years of high school French, and two more years in college. I recall reading an "in French" novel by Camus in my sophomore year of college.
Outside of that, well merde about covers it! Somehwere in the distant past, round about 1974, a dear friend of mine was working the Cannes Film Festival and we had agreed I'd call him at his hotel and possibly arrange for me to take a train to Cannes (I was in Vicenza, Italy, at the time) for a long weekend.
Bottom line was that I could not get time off, so I called to let him know. He was out, but I left a detailed message that was repeated back to me. It was all en Français and no one was more surprised than I that all this stuff came rushing forth. Words just poured out of my mouth...and I didn't get any attitude from the other end, either, for being too provincial or too American.
Today, I recall the alphabet.
My 9 1/2 years in Italy left me with a different language "skill" -- I can hold my own with fisherman and sailors....and I can be very expressive in a heinous traffic situation.
Jose will be delighted to know that I know my way around Italian menus both in the south and the north and was only once fooled into thinking I was getting beef when it was really rabbit. Burn me once, but never twice, on food.
The rest is courtesy of TV and movies:
Ach! Due Liebe! (Augustine, dontchaknow!)
Ich bin ein Berliner!
Guten tag!
Guten morgen!
Sayonara!
Aragato!
Domo aragato!
And from my trips to Hawai'i:
Mele Kalikimaka
Hauoli Makahiki Hou
I grok "de nada" and "gracias" and I can use my Italian to work my way through most Spanish occasions.
But my favorite language of all is the language of LUV!
Sadly, I'm not as conversant as I once was....!
-
THE DVR did pick up MIDNIGHT LACE off TCM yesterday, so I'll be burning a DVD of that this afternoon, too.
Curses, Universal, for not putting this out on a commercial DVD. And transfer FLOWER DRUM SONG whicle you're at it, OK?
-
I would LOVE to take a class in sign language. I think it's beautiful to see in practice. I bought a computer disc that taught me the alphabet and some common expresions like please and thank you among others.
But, again, lack of using it has made me forget so much.
-
I thought "Medium" was extremely terrific last night.
It held my attention throughout the hour and it ended beautifully. I got a HUGE chuckle from Allison's last comment.
And has any actor EVER played the majority of his scenes -- in any TV show -- in just a t-shirt and boxers?
Jake Weber is a first! And he does it extremely well, as if it were the most natural thing in the world!
-
Congrats to DR TCB from me too!
I took many years of French (4th,5th, 6th grades almost totally in French). Same with 7th and 8th. 9th-10th-11th I believe I only had French class in French (although it was quite advanced by that time).
-
I read a review of the LIFEBOAT DVD this morning which found that the image quality contained some dirt and clutter. (The film has never looked very good on TV broadcasts.)
I know bk reported on his viewing a week or so ago, but I don't remember if he had similar feelings about it. I noticed that Fox did not stick it in their Studio Classics series, most of which have been cleaned up to look gorgeous. Maybe that's why they didn't. They couldn't restore it well enough to take its place among THE GRAPES OF WRATH and THE SONG OF BERNADETTE as far as image quality is concerned.
-
If I were to curse Universal, it would be for issuing "Shenandoah" in a no-frills economy DVD. I may be mistaken, but I think I've seen it on TV in stereo, but the DVD is a mono mix.
"Shenandoah" is one of that studio's highest grossing films of the 1960s. It was their biggest hit in 1965 and was a major late-career boost for Jimmy Stewart.
-
Dear Hisaka, your English is superb! Would that any of us could speak your language half as well!

Did they at least give it an anamorphic widescreen transfer?

I certainly can't second-guess why "Lifeboat" was not issued in the classics series, but then neither was "Laura" and it certainly ranks as a studio classic.
Key Home Video released "Lifeboat" on VHS back in the 1980s and I remember thinking it looked splendid.
Of course, I never have seen it projected on a big-ass screen, so all that matter you mention wouldn't be that obvious to me.
Maybe Fox didn't want to spend the money on restoration at this time.
-
Fox did that for awhile with BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID. TV broadcasts and the VHS tape were in stereo, but that monumental special edition laserdisc package had the film in mono.
Since Fox issues most of its earlier films in both mono and stereo, I suspect the BUTCH CASSIDY DVD now has both tracks (I don't have it), but I know there were howls of protest when that laserdisc came out in mono.

MEDIUM SPOILER
I thought "Medium" was extremely terrific last night.
It held my attention throughout the hour and it ended beautifully.
Every episode this season has held my attention throughout. The shows are really unpredictable this year. I mean how many of us were sure it was the other psychic giving the info. That was a really good twist.
I almost wish that the show could be longer so that they could spend longer wrapping up each show.
-
Did they at least give it an anamorphic widescreen transfer?
I'm certain it was widescreen, but have no recall of it being anamorphic. This was issued quite a few years ago -- 1999 or 2000? -- and I wasn't even remotely aware of what "anamorphic" widescreen was.
-

Yes, but LAURA initiated the new Fox Film Noir line of DVDs, so that's why they didn't put it as a Studio Classic.

I see. So...what you're saying is that "Lifeboat" was just thrown out there...to sink or swim float on its own.

Well, with the name of Aldred Hitchcock to sell it, I suspect they expected it to stay afloat.

I almost wish that the show could be longer so that they could spend longer wrapping up each show.
It has been my impression this season that Glenn Gordon Caron has deliberately paced each show so that the denouement occurs in the final minute.
It leaves me feeling kind of breathless...definitely wanting more...and very much anticipating "next week's show."

With most of tonight's TV schedule in reruns (prior to sweeps month and facing the World Series), I will watch the one fresh episode of SUPERNATURAL and fill out my evening with DVDs and shows on the DVR.

Yes, I knew I had to cover my bases there as there are quite a few reality show fans on this site.
And when AMERICAN IDOL returns in January, I'll return to the reality fold.

This site is a kind of "dictionary" of ASL signs.
Any DR who would like to learn a specific phrase or sign can use it by searching for the word alphabetically and then seeing the sign in Quicktime. ;D
Very useful. The best such site on the internet. And it's free!

Bonjour, BK. Comment allez-vous ?

So funny. Opinions cover the gamut. The review of LIFEBOAT I saw this morning found the transfer disappointing and filled with dirt.
Here's critic Glenn Erickson's opinions on the quality of the transfer:
"Fox's DVD of Lifeboat looks great ... the B&W image is basically clean and rear-projected images are almost as sharp and defined as the foreground. For extras the studio has added an okay making-of docu and a commentary from the well-informed and overly dramatic Professor Drew Casper of USC.
Perhaps Fox has discontinued their 'Studio Classics series' to simply call their quality library product 'special editions,' which is fair enough. As so many releases seem to tie-in with similar big films, we can understand the awkward cover illustration that packs an old photo of the castaways into a lifeboat graphic ... funny, the boat is a silhouette but its passengers are all front-lit.
-
The morning has FLOWN by. It's almost noon, and my stomach clock (a Snoopy reference) is going off. Time for lunch!
WBBL.
-
DR MattH, which shows are having reruns tonight?
The ones I watch are: Close To Home, Gilmore Girls, and Boston Legal.
And of course TAR (they are leaving the US finally THANK GOODNESS!!!).

Has Fox discontinued its "Studio Classics" series?
I was under the impression that there are several coming out very soon.

One of my co-workers is wearing some kind of lotion that, to me, has a horribly congestive effect.
Another co-worker often wears a perfume that does the same thing.
I've told them each of the problem, but each continues to wear their products.
And yet...they often express concern over my congestion.
Aren't people FUNNY?!!!

And for those who watch AMAZING RACE, i am curious which are your preferred teams. DR MBarnum always likes the goody team. :) (not sure which team that is, although i know it's not the Paolo family!).
TEAM: GODLEWSKI SISTERS
Hometown: Des Plaines, Ill.
TEAM: WEAVER FAMILY (Widow and Kids)
Hometown: Ormond Beach, Fla.
TEAM: GAGHAN FAMILY
Hometown: Glastonbury, Conn.
TEAM: LINZ FAMILY (Siblings)
Hometown: Cincinnati
TEAM: BRANSEN FAMILY (Dad and Daughters)
Hometown: Park Ridge, Ill.
TEAM: PAOLO FAMILY
Hometown: Carmel, N.Y.
***
Me, i dislike the Gaghan family (with the two little kids), and the Paolo family (from ny with the sons who bicker with the mom constantly).
I like the linz family (brothers and sister). I like the Bransen family (father and 3 daughters).
I did like the weaver family in the beginning (widow and kids). Not sure if i like them now. And the sisters are okay.
-
DR Ron, just tell the coworkers that you are ALLERGIC to their perfume, and that you must keep your distance from them. If they want your help they will probably stop wearing the product! They probably don't realize that it's really bothering you. Or they just don't care. :(
(i have the same problem being so affected by perfume).

Good Night, and Good Luck is the only movie I've actually paid to see in a theatre in ages. It's terrific. More black & white movies, please. More movies of intelligence, please. David Straitharn, who has been a brilliant, but unsung actor for years, is great in the movie. So are Clooney and Langella and the supporting cast.
I don't know how anyone could call it a political diatribe. What? We now have people actually defending McCarthy's shredding of our Constitutional rights and civil liberties?
-
I don't speak any other language, at all. :-\ My mother is German, my dad is of German heritage and we even lived in Germany for three years of my life, but I never learned much of the language (a couple of swear words, maybe). It somehow worked out that I never had to take a foreign language in high school. I only took one quarter of Spanish when I was in college but I only remember how to count to 10 and say "Yo tengo hambre," which means "I am hungry." I used to get it wrong and say "Yo tengo hombre" which means "I have a man," which I don't (at this time). ;)
-
I had read that if you know a made-up language, such as Klingon, you can legally claim to be bilingual on job applications!
-
Adelphia just went out as I was trying to post, but I saw it happening and I saved - whew.
Most Internet DVD critics are children whose only knowledge of DVDs comes from what they've read on other sites - hence the "dirt" and "debris" comments. They are talking about the opening ten or fifteen minutes of the film, all of which is covered with fog - every shot in that sequence is an optical, and, like all opticals, is overly grainy and has negative dirt from the generation loss on those shots. A little knowledge never hurt anyone, but you wouldn't know it by these nincompoops. And you'd think they'd figure it out, because once you're out of the first fifteen minutes, everything is suddenly crystal clear and sharp as can be.
Re McCarthy - when I was younger I was obsessed with the McCarthy hearings and that whole era (Point of Order, a wonderful documentary, was supposed to be out weeks ago on DVD, but keeps getting pushed) - read many, many books, watched many, many videos. I haven't seen the Clooney film yet, but will soon. And no, there is no defense in any way, shape, or form, that anyone anywhere could come up with for the horrendous, immoral, and self-serving behavior of Mr. McCarthy and his apes.

Tried Spanish is College for 2 years, failed both times. I can pronounce Spanish, Latin, and Italian for singing purposes. I would love to learn French as I fell in love with the language in Paris this last summer.

If you ever encounter one "Eric Paddon" on the FSM Messageboard, you might be interested to know that he is a staunch defender of McCarthy and all means he used to conduct his hearings.
I have been so amazed at Paddon's extreme right ravings, that I've dubbed those of his kind "Paddonites."
That he loves film music, and the Broadway musical form, is possibly the only saving grace he has.

When I was at Western Washington University and was studying to become a high school choir teacher (before reality set it), I took a class on how to pronounce foreign language, so that we could at least sound like we understood what we were singing when, in fact, we had no clew. Anyway, pronouncing Latin, Italian and German was very easy, but French was the hardest for everyone in the class. :P

Edward R. Murrow was CBS for me for many years. His See It Now and Person to Person were great pleasures. And he used to host a Friday evening program that followed The Twilight Zone....that may have been See It Now...that was taken over by Walter Cronkite.
I have read one good Murrow bio....but forget the title....

With Heroic Truth by Norman Finkelstein.
Almost ALL bios of Murrow deal with his professional life and not much with his personal life. And like many pioneers in communication, CBS eventually treated him as some type of dinosaur whose time had passed...shuffling him all around the schedule and reducing his budgets until he finally became a victim of his own success and ego.

I am done with this paper! Yay! Good night, everybody!
-
Good Afternoon all!
I hope no one has their bathrobes in a twist! ;) :)
It is cold. Not cool as the newscasters would have you believe. IT IS COLD!
When I was a little girl, my grandmother on my fathers side, spoke German to me. There is a tape somewhere of her and I playing Old Maid and talking in German. Now, I barely remember two words of it.
I took Spanish in Jr. High and passed on the condition that I would never take another foreign language as long as I live.
I can sign a little--I think I can "sing" Happy Birthday in sign and I can speak a little bit of Klingon. Got myself in a LOT of trouble at a con once doing that.
There was a guy dressed up as a full Klingon. To be cute, I used a Klingon phrase on him and he (thinking I spoke full Klingon) behaved like a Klingon male and threw me over his shoulder! He thought I was trying to start a Klingon mating ritual! :o
Luckily, I remembered one other Klingon phrase which translated to something like, "I would rather go wash my hair"--a BIG insult to a Klingon male and he sat me back down. ;D Some of the other "Klingons" started to laugh at him because I insulted his “manhood”. Those guys take their personas VERY seriously.
It was both scary and funny at the same time. All I know is that I will NEVER do that again. In fact, I don't even remember how to say what I said.

Married to the same woman for 35 years, one child.

Congratulations to DR SANDRA on completion of her assignment!
Don't wait so long next time!!! ::)
A nice Murrow remembrance by a colleague!

I am so happy to hear such positive comments from HHW'ers about what I am anticipating as my favorite film of the year!!! ;D

yes DR DANISE - ya gotta watch out for those Klingons.

Eric Paddon is an insult to the human race. I've had many run-ins with him (he's also a staunch defender of joecaps) - I don't see him posting much anymore. Knowing he is McCarthy's lover is not a surprise, since that's how he tends to take people on that he doesn't care for - he casts scurrilous brickbats gleaned from things he can find on the web - taking them completely out of context like, well, just like Mr. McCarthy used to do fifty years ago.

;D Trust me, I will.

Oh, so you do know him.
Well, your take is identical to my own. Although, I'd throw in a few cherce descriptive vulgarities in my references to him.
I once asked him if he was the real Eric Paddon or whether he was using his father's e-mail address because I found him very juvenile.
Supposedly, he teaches at Wheaton University. There are various treatises by an Eric Paddon findable via Google in which he "alters history" with his own unique perspectives.
I've likened him to an anti-christ, which threw him into a rage, of course.

I have some errands to run today. See ya'll laters!

DR Ron.... sometime these people just don't really believe it could be them causing your condition.
When I first met my then to be FIL I discovered that in honor of our engagement (vixdad & I were already engaged before I met them as they were still living in Coventry England ) for which his parents threw us the equivalent of a wedding reception in his mum's restaurant (she owned a restaraunt on the Royal Agricultural Showgrounds in Stoneleigh, near Stratford Upon Avon)
Anyway, In honor of our engagment Dad had invested heavily in cigars for the men to enjoy after the meal. Unfortunately after checking I discovered that there was no "other room" to which the smokers would retire to indulge, and I am desperately allergic to cigar smoke. I asked vixdad to convey this information , which he did, and it was received as meaning that I "didn't care for cigar smoke"... a few days before the party Dad lit up a precelebration cigar along with an Uncle who was visiting and I had to leave the room, my eyes streaming with tears, my nose pouring..., I retired to the bathroom with the window open and mopping my eyes with a damp washrag until Mum came to find me.
She wanted to know whatever I was crying about. I explained that I was desperately allergic to cigar smoke, that I was not "crying" and I had no control over the condition. Needless to say the cigar smoking at the enagement party was cancelled, but I suspect that Dad really believed that had I "chosen to" I could have overcome my problem.

And for those who watch AMAZING RACE, i am curious which are your preferred teams. DR MBarnum always likes the goody team. :) (not sure which team that is, although i know it's not the Paolo family!).
My favorites are still the Linz family--I like their energy and I think they're a fun group. My least favorite is the Weavers--they've revealing themselves as the truly dysfunctional group in this race. And I'm getting fed up with how the mother always prays--she doesn't pray for strength or guidance--she outright prays for things as in "Dearest Lord, help us find the Biggest Office Chair in the World" or "Please God Almighty, where is the Georgia Colonel Motor Homes?"
The mom and dad with the two kids are pretty much self-deluded in thinking that they are this dynamic super foursome--they have some occasional strokes of luck but mostly they are confused and behind. The father and three daughters are okay but not very involving. The four sisters are also okay, but I was a little turned off by the self-produced drama during last week's show. The Loud Italians are just annoying.
-
Re: tonight's AMAZING RACE.
Did I mention how happy I am that they are finally leaving the US? I think from now on the show will be much more interesting. And at least we know the teams much better now.
-
DR Vixmom, I think you are right. Most people tend to think that people who cannot stand smoke or perfume simply do not like it. They don't really get the symptoms that go with it! I am a little bit better now. But for a while i could barely go through the front of most department stores (perfume department).
I would have to hold my breath and run through the store. I'm not sure if they are spraying less perfume in the air. Or if my allergies are a bit better. But I really try to stay completely away from perfume. Although some cologne and shampoos also bother me. That is one reason i was so thrilled to find the Secret Vanilla body spray. I can use that and feel like a grown-up! :)
-
I probably like the Lenz and Bransen families best on THE AMAZING RACE. I really liked the team that got eliminated last week, so I am down to two to root for and the rest to BOO for! LOL

From elmore:
The tv ads are declaring that the new special edition of TITANIC has an alternate ending. Perhaps the boat doesn't sink?
Is that the 1953 Titanic or the 1997 one? If it’s the later maybe they changed that stupid ending where the priceless necklace is tossed overboard. That ending irritates me to no end. ::)
-
Tuesday greetings! It is a blustery fall day here in SW Ohio.
TOD - I took 4 years of high school Spanish and what I remember best is that one of my textbooks had a house plan in it that I liked a lot. Something must have sunk in, though, because I placed into second year, second semester Spanish in college, thus completing my 2-year language requirement midway through my freshman year. In my senior year, I decided to learn a little French, so took first-year, which helped the old GPA immensely!
Can't speak either, but what little reading knowledge I have comes in handy in my reference work.
I may have to learn some German soon, because DS Rob plans to co-op in Germany in 2008.
-
And has any actor EVER played the majority of his scenes -- in any TV show -- in just a t-shirt and boxers?
If memory serves, Jake Weber did Shakespeare's LOVE'S LABOURS LOST with a nude scene around 1990.
-
Good Morning! Good Afternoon!
Sorry to have been errant and truant so far today, but...
7:00 - Woke up. Watched a bit of "The Today Show".
7:35 - Headed back to the mechanic.
8:00 - Arrived at my mechanic's shop. Waited in the car for a while while they got all the lights turned on. -I told them I would be there when they opened! That also gave me a chance to listen to the news on NPR.
8:05 - Went in and dropped off my key.
8:06 - Started watching the last half of "Win A Date With Tad Hamilton" on HBO. -The TV in their waiting area has cable. Also started reading some of "Interview with the Vampire".
9:00-ish - Started watching that "Pancho Villa" movie on HBO. Also continued multi-tasking by reading bits and pieces of "Interview".
10:20 - I noticed that one of the supply drivers came by with the part for my car - a tire rod end, I believe.
10:50 - I saw my car being wheeled out of the service bay.
*Of course, I was still charged for 90 minutes of shop time - even though a good chunk of that time was spent waiting for the part. However, I managed to get out of there for about $130 - which was actually lower than the estimate I was given yesterday. So, no real complaints.
Then it was over to Ukrop's for some lunch - Tomato Basil soup, and a Tuna Melt. Then over to my storage place to dig out my winter coat. Then back here to get cleaned up, and catch up on some e-mails...
I'm gonna go ahead and stay here tonight too. Steve had Men's Chorus rehearsal last night, so we'll head out for dinner tonight. And then I'll head back up to Fairfax in the morning. *There's also some construction planned for 95 tonight, and I don't feel like sitting in traffic right now.
All in all, a good day so far. Not great, but good. -And I've said it before, but... It's just amazing how much day there is when you get up before 10:00AM!
;)
-
Car woes are anathema, DRJOSE. Congratulations on getting yours dispatched in a timely manner....not counting yesterday, of course.
Charlie Rose just did a fine interview with Joan Didion.
-
Topic of the Day:
I took two years of French in high school. When I got to college, I tested into French II. Well, after the first few weeks of that class, I realized that I should have started back at French I (well, college-level French I ;)). I ended up taking five semesters of French in college.
I also took one semester of German. Unfortunately, I happened to take German 101 at the same time I was taking French 301. Not a good idea. I finally realized what they meant by "Romance languages". -"Dative case", c'mon?!?!? I squeaked out of that class with a passing grade.
I decided to take German as part of my musical education. -Most Music History majors were required to take German. I was big into my "vocal coaching" mode, and just figured have the extra language facility could only help. I had even planned to take a semester of Italian just to get a basic understanding of the language. Well... I decided my two semesters of Lyric Diction were all I needed at that time after my French/German debacle.
I can still read in French - I do have to look up words, but I can understand most basic texts. And if I happen to be around "it" for a couple of days, I can carry on basic conversations in French. I can pronounce German. I can pronounce Italian. There was even a time when I could pronounce Russian - there's a great Russian diction book put out by Di Capo, breaks down the Cyrillic alphabet in plain English, so to speak. -Thank you IPA!
-
Car woes are anathema, DRJOSE. Congratulations on getting yours dispatched in a timely manner....not counting yesterday, of course.
I've said it before... My Ford Escort Wagon is a 1993 model. It still runs very well, and the gas mileage is still "silly good" (averages about 40mpg on the highway). I'd have to say that over the 13 years I've owned the car, I've put just about $3000 in major repairs into it besides the usual maintenance stuff (oil, filers, etc.). Not bad at all.
And now that the car is "good" until next October, this morning's visit to the garage will most likely be my last one since I'll be selling the car once I make the "final" move to NYC in February.
:)
-
OH! And the gasoline prices... WOW!
When I filled up in Fairfax Sunday afternoon, regular was at $2.79/gallon. When I arrived in Richmond Sunday night, most places had regular at $2.69/gallon. -Gas is usually ten cents cheaper down here in Richmond (compared to DC). Well...
Yesterday, when I went to get my car inspected, I noticed that some stations had dropped to $2.49/gallon.
And when I was leaving the garage this morning, I saw places as low at $2.39/gallon!
I had heard the news reports that gas prices had dropped a quarter over the last two weeks, but 20 cents in two days?!?!? WOW!
-
Yes DRJANE it is an alternate ending to the 1997 version, and it has something to do with Brock, the man who heads the dive to get the necklace. Not sure it will be much different from the other one...
-
Falling gasoline prices are always WELCOME at any speed...LOL.
-
Was the RKO GOLDEN GATE movie theatre in San Francisco?
-
From elmore:Is that the 1953 Titanic or the 1997 one? If it’s the later maybe they changed that stupid ending where the priceless necklace is tossed overboard. That ending irritates me to no end. ::)
I kind of liked that ending.....
-
Oh look I'm beginning a page with a post about an ending!
-
Jose will be delighted to know that I know my way around Italian menus both in the south and the north and was only once fooled into thinking I was getting beef when it was really rabbit. Burn me once, but never twice, on food.
The rest is courtesy of TV and movies:
Ach! Due Liebe! (Augustine, dontchaknow!)
Ich bin ein Berliner!
Guten tag!
Guten morgen!
Sayonara!
Aragato!
Domo aragato!
And from my trips to Hawai'i:
Mele Kalikimaka
Hauoli Makahiki Hou
I grok "de nada" and "gracias" and I can use my Italian to work my way through most Spanish occasions.
But my favorite language of all is the language of LUV!
Sadly, I'm not as conversant as I once was....!
Pleased as punch!
:)
One of the conductors in DC who I've worked with many times is Jon Kalbfleisch. He's the Resident Music Director for Signature Theatre. -DR elmore knows him. Well...
A few years ago, Jon was in Germany with a tour of My One and Only (with Jodi Benson and her husband, IIRC). Jon is gourmand/gourmet (and skinny as a rail - damn him! ;)), and had a list of restaurants he wanted to try out various cities. He would always get strange reactions from the maitre d's when he would make reservations. Apparently, "kalbfleisch" is common as a food word in German - it means "veal" - but it's not as common as a surname. He said people would think he was trying to order "kalbfleisch" in advice, rather than him just trying to leave his name.
;)
Domo arigato gozaimasu
*And, of course, JFK's faux pas has sort of become one of the standard teaching tools in German classes. When one is saying that they "am/is/are" something, then no article is needed. The proper phrase should have been, "Ich bin Berliner".
**And that's what I remember from my one semester of German in college.
;D

I was thinking of trying this recipe for Halloween:
Witches' Fingers
(http://www.kraftcanada.com/assets/recipe_photos/rec_r1_5248ec.jpg)
Directions
1. Pre-heat oven to 325°F. Mix together 1 cup Kraft Smooth Peanut Butter, 1/2 cup sugar and 1 egg.
2. Shape small amounts of dough into fingers and place on baking sheet. Make indentations for knuckles with edge of spoon.
3. Dip almonds into red food colouring and place on end of each finger. Press down to form nail. Bake for 12 minutes or until set. When still soft, re-form into finger shape with edge of spoon. Let fingers fully cool before removing from baking sheet

I can say two phrases in German:
99 luftballons auf ihrem weg zum horizont.
Alles klar, Herr Kommissar?

LOL, the Gaghan family are my favorites...the little daughter just makes me smile and both kids seem to really be having fun, and the parents are very nice.
I also like the Linz family and the Branson family, also.
I don't care for the Godlewski sisters at all, and I am not sure about the Weaver family...I go back and forth with them.......but there are no teams that I really, really dislike....so far! Well, maybe the Godlewskis.
-
DRJASON - Saboteur is on TCM Saturday night at 10:30 pm EST.
-
You can have the Gag-Me family all to yourself, DR MBARNUM.
I am predicting here and now, the week the Gag-mes come in last will be a NON-elimination round.
I haz spoken. ;D
-

How come we always seem to disagree? :)
That is too funny, cause I cannot stand the Gaghan family. Both the kids and the parents get on my nerves.
However I also go back and forth with the Weaver family. The first show they seemed so nice. And their story is so emotional (their father was killed at a racetrack). And when they got run-over by that cart, I felt so bad for them. But then they got all loopy on the bus.
Hey, you forgot the Paolo family, which I know must grate on your last nerve.
Should be interesting tonight. Panama!
-
You can have the Gag-Me family all to yourself, DR MBARNUM.
I so agree! :)
It's funny because when i first saw that little girl on a commercial, I also thought she was sweet.
But I do not like the parents. And I hate how the kids keep showing off. They may be able to run fast. But really they cannot contribute to the team. This family cannot do many of the tasks since the kids cannot help. And they just really get on my nerves.
-
Sometimes the Paolo's family makes me laugh...sometimes I am thinking there are some serious problems with that family! LOL!
-
Should be interesting tonight. Panama!
I've noticed how the commercials for this weeks show keep hitting us over the head with that fact. And yet, I don't remember them mentioning Panama at all in last week's coming attractions. I thought they were going to Texas next to play baseball.
A man, a plan, a canal--Erie!
-
LOL....the Paolos would get lost driving there you can bet. Yes, serious problems.
On non-AMAZING RACE news....what does one wear to an afternoon meeting with Miss Cindy Williams and her manager?
-
Hmm... one always welcomes a new Andrew Lloyd Webber compilation CD, even with Sarah Brightman. However, the new CD "Love Changes Everything", there are 7 unreleased tracks, most seem like they came out of the vaults and were recorded between Sarah's pop/musical theatre phase and her "popera" phase. A few tracks seem to be the same tracks included in the 1992 release "Sarah Brightman Sings Andrew Lloyd Webber", but it's great to hear new duets with John Barrowman and Michael Ball. Also featured is the spanish version of "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" which is a hold over from "Surrender - The Music Of Andrew Lloyd Webber". For the most part, Sarah is in great musical theatre voice, nice and clear.
-
FJL glad your parents are fine.
Cillaliz are you feeling better today?
TCB sorry about your sister.
-
Cindy meeting has been cancelled. Her manager is a real flake - has done this before. It's not that important - it was basically to discuss who will actually be booking her show when we're finished with it - I don't want some loser who books luncheons and Kiwanis Clubs - I want a major booker.
Instead I shall lunch with the supple Miss Tammy Minoff.
-
Yes, I did record MEDIUM in high definition.
Guess I had better check if we have MEDIUM. We have lost a few of our HD shows. The good news is they recorded in the guest room on an East Coast station.
-
Has anyone seen the grisly Campbell Soup commercial with John Lithgow? It was like watching a major accident with heads and blood flying everywhere. What were they thinking?
-
One of my co-workers is wearing some kind of lotion that, to me, has a horribly congestive effect.
Another co-worker often wears a perfume that does the same thing.
I've told them each of the problem, but each continues to wear their products.
And yet...they often express concern over my congestion.
Aren't people FUNNY?!!!
Real funny. ::) I get a swift and severe headache from certain scents which can result in a very cranky Jane.
-
Has anyone seen the grisly Campbell Soup commercial with John Lithgow? It was like watching a major accident with heads and blood flying everywhere. What were they thinking?
I just saw that commercial a few minutes ago.. YIKES!
However, it looks like they may have shot it in New York City since I recognized a couple of the chorines...
But the whole concept of the commercial.. and that set... the suit... ???
-
Has anyone seen the grisly Campbell Soup commercial with John Lithgow? It was like watching a major accident with heads and blood flying everywhere. What were they thinking?
It looked to me like a rip off of the Stan Freberg/Ann Miller Great American Soup commercial from years back. Only not nearly as entertaining. Lithgow looks like the deer in the headlights.
-
Jane I agree with you ... how stupid to throw that necklace back in the water...
-
Good Afternoon!
...I was just checking the Kennedy Center's website to see what the schedule for Wicked is when it comes in in December. Alas, my Damn Yankees schedules totally overlaps, so I won't be able to see the show here in town - and see my friends in it.
However, according to the website, the whole DC run - just a short four weeks - is sold out. And it looks like the $200 premium seats are all gone too.
-
Good afternoon!
I forgot to mention that last night I also watched THE MEN WHO MAKE THE MOVIES: Alfred Hitchcock that TCM showed at 8 p.m.
I had taped the program years ago when it first aired (Hitchcock was always a favorite and I wanted everything I could get about him on videotape). Robert Osborne mentioned that last night's show was an updated version of the original, but the only updating I could see were the film clips in which the remastered versions we're familiar with now were substituted for the full frame, sometimes weak looking clips in the original broadcast. No additional interview material was added even though if one is to go by the print version of Schickel production, Hitchcock had many more throughts to convey. I always thought the documentary was spotty in that some representative films weren't represented. I mean, we skip from NOTORIOUS to PSYCHO. Even if they couldn't get clips from his Paramount classics, points could have been made about his work using stills, and there were clips from STRANGERS ON A TRAIN used in the introduction but nothing about the film in the rest of the documentary.
Of course, when you're dealing with a filmography as rich as Hitchcock's and have only an hour program, something HAS to be omitted.
-
...And I just got a cool e-mail from a friend of mine who is playing Mrs. Pennywise in an upcoming production of Urinetown in the Bronx. The company managed to get a hold of the original Broadway costumes. So... She's wearing some of Nancy Opel's costumes, however(!), she's also wearing the sweater that Angela Lansbury wore when she was playing Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd!
That's cool!
-
As for today, I watched MEDIUM. It was a marvelous episode, by just as stated, the HD broadcast was very problematic. I don't know if it was the network or my local station but about 10 minutes before the end, they just switched themselves to the analog broadcast for the remainder of the program.
-
Some good movies coming up on TCM....lots of pre-codes, early 30s musicals, Nancy Drew movies, and for those DRs who enjoyed that Red Skelton Whistling movie....they are showing the rest of them.
-
Danise your Klingon story is a riot.
Jennifer they use to just spray the perfume samples at everyone that walked by. Now they ask politely greatly reducing the stench & allergic reactions.
JRand-thanks. Even if they improve the stupid ending I wouldn’t want to sit through the movie again.
-
I finished the Rupert Everett SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE CASE OF THE SILK STOCKING. It was an OK mystery, but Everett was merely adequate in the Holmes part. He had the intellectual superiority down pat, but Holmes' excitement while on the case was completely missing. Everett played the entire role as if embalmed, or as if he was under the influence of the opium and the cocaine solution throughout the entire enterprise.
Also, when they veer away from the canon of stories and make up their own Holmes mythology, the show HAS to lose a few points from me. This one had Watson marrying (for the first time) an American psychiatrist. Later on, when Holmes is bushwhacked by one of the villains, he punches Holmes in the stomach whereby Holmes pulls out a revolver and shoots him in the leg. Any Holmes fan knows Holmes was an expert boxer and would have defended himself with his fists, not a pistol, especially one-on-one.
-
Jane I agree with you ... how stupid to throw that necklace back in the water...
And, except for the fact he drew the portrait of her wearing it, it really had nothing to do with him.
Sorry Cillaliz. ;D
-
Buoyed by the appearance of the sleazy Roy Cohn in GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK, I pulled out CITIZEN COHN from the to-watch shelf. I only got about 10 minutes of it watched before coming to the internet, but I should be able to finish it when I go back downstairs.
I saw it years ago when HBO premiered it, but I haven't seen it all the way through since.
-
Fans here of Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops may be interested to know that they are touring China and, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer reporter traveling with them, enjoying great success and huge ovations.
-
I keep trying to post a Page 6 Lucy Dance, but the site doesn't seem to want to take it.
-
Lucy can be headstrong when she wants to be.
-
CITIZEN COHN was an intriguing book - the HBO movie was very good, but the man was so .... evil seems strong, but I can't think of another ... that it's difficult to watch.
-
Instead of a Lucy dance, how about a Lana descent (her big moment in "Ziegfeld Girl"):
-
Or, how about a smile from Van Johnson?
-
And one to grow on!
-
Here's the Lucy photo I was trying to upload.
-
Guess it's time for my living room to get some attention. I'll be back later with some opinions on CITIZEN COHN and SUPERNATURAL.
The next Val Lewton is THE LEOPARD MAN. Might try to get that watched, too.

I can say two phrases in German:
99 luftballons auf ihrem weg zum horizont.
Alles klar, Herr Kommissar?
We "Pop" fans have had such an education. LOL DtM.

I've been catching up Ron. (and having breakfast)

Bobby Sherman keeps asking Julie if she loves him.
As bad as "Timothy" and "Judy Judy Judy". Breakfast radio rules!
-
I've been catching up Ron. (and having breakfast)
On what succulent dishes does Tomovoz break his fast?
-
Orange juice (always freeshly squeezed) Cereal (unsweetened as most are here), Toast and Tea.
(Tea of the leaf variety - never the teabag variety - we all have our standards).
-
Ooooh! oooh! My WIZARD OF OZ came, too! ! !
So did my TITANIC. . .I'm not into it for the necklace, I'm into it for the recreation. . .I'm certainly not into it for the screenplay. . .but, I can't wait to view it anamorphically and in 6.1 DTS sound!
took seven years total of French, rarely speak it, often read it, never write it. . .and that's it for the TOD of td.
-
Married to the same woman for 35 years, one child.
You have?
-
I kind of liked that ending.....
I didn't mind the ending either, it was the 190+ minutes prior to the ending that I didn't like.
-
And, except for the fact he drew the portrait of her wearing it, it really had nothing to do with him.
Sorry Cillaliz. ;D
No, but it was the reason that they went out to the site in the present. So, if she just gives it to them, then they know she was playing a game with them so she could tell her story. Now she's told her story, she seems to like the treasure hunter and he likes her granddaughter, so now they can find it in the wreckage and will never be the wiser to her little game. I like that, she's smarter than all of them.
-
I"m feeling a little better, but still have a headache. I've slept for about 18 of the last 24 hours and could go back to sleep right now if I wanted to

I never thought of that before. It's quite true that she never told them she had the necklace, even though in the telling of the story, we see that she has it after being rescued.

Someone help me out here, in reference to "Titanic" on DVD.
I know there is a new 2-DVD set.
I've read there will be a 4-DVD set and a 5-DVD set.
Any truth to this? Or any variation?

Is any-body there-re-re-re-re-......?

Has anyone seen the grisly Campbell Soup commercial with John Lithgow? It was like watching a major accident with heads and blood flying everywhere. What were they thinking?
He won a Tony® Award for being in a musical! ::) That's what they were thinking.

The US (Region 1) got a THREE, not TWO disc edition of TITANIC.
Europe (and other regions) got the FOUR disc edition.
One of the lacking items on the Region 1 Edition is this:

I love John Lithgow. I'm amazed by how dreadful the commercial is from its writing to its design to its staging.

Considering the original "Titanic" DVD release had NO extra's whatsoever, at least something will be welcome.
-
No Titanic here (of course I didn't order it, either), but I can watch my "15 Pulse Pounding Episodes" of the 1942 serial THE MONSTER AND THE APE.
-
I am awaiting 2 dvds from Amazon.com that I ordered 3 weeks ago. They haven't shipped yet, despite the fact they both say "will ship within 24 hours." I suppose I ought to write them.

Good Evening!
Back from dinner with Steve and one his new neighbors/friends, Paul. Steve originally wanted to walk across the Manchester Bridge into Shockoe Slip to go to Peking for dinner, but both Paul and I nixed that idea - just too cold. -I don't mind the cold, but that's a pretty "healthy" walk, and we've been getting sprinkles still... And with the traffic whizzing by... And Paul does not like the cold at all - as we found out tonight, so... We ended up at the Peking in the "near West End".
Note to self: No scallion pancakes next time. However, the rest of the meal was great. Steve had his usual Shrimp Hunan, Paul had the Pineapple Chicken. I decided to change it up a little bit, and order something not spicy, and gave their Chicken and Walnuts a try. That was sooooo good. It actually was a little spicy, but the walnuts that came with the dish were their "Honeyed Walnuts". Just the right amount of sweetness. Very addictive. I almost ordered a side of them to go - they're on their appetizer list.
After dinner, we headed over to Starbucks for some coffe... Well, we walked into Starbucks and then walked out... We decided to head down to Shockoe Slip to Cafe Gutenberg, a really cool coffee, light meal and dessert shop. -And, yes, there are lots of books there too.
Since we were there for dessert... Paul ordered their Turtle Torte - a flourless chocolate deal with pecans and caramel. I ordered their "Bonoffi" pie - a graham cracker crust topped with dulce de leche, freshly sliced bananas, whipped cream and a chocolate drizzle. Steve ordered an extra fork. ;) Everything was very good.
*Cafe Gutenberg was one of the many places in Shockoe Slip that had to rebuild after the floods last summer. And like a lot of the businesses in the slip, there is a marker on the inside walls indicating how far up the water went. Nice to know that that area is recovering from last summers devastating floods.

Sorry I don’t buy it. And it is her necklace. If by some chance they find it after it’s tossed, her granddaughter doesn’t get to keep it. However if she gives it to her granddaughter then it is her granddaughter’s to do with as she pleases.
FEEL GOOD VIBES!

OH!
And I knew there had to be "something" that was keeping me here in Richmond another night...
I picked up a copy of the new Style Magazine while we were out. It's Richmond's free weekly - kinds of artsy slant. Actually, Steve noticed a bundle of them sitting on sidewalk - it's tomorrow's issue. I turned to the restaurant reviews like I always do, but while looking over the table of contents, I noticed a bit of news that had me "Oooh"ing out loud.
It turns out Stella's - my favorite restaurant in Richmond for many reasons - will be closing within the month. It turns out Stella herself is finally retiring at the age of 63 after years and years in the business. Stella was one of my many "second mothers" I had here in Richmond while I was in school. -Stella's was also the original home of my favorite waitress, Edwina. I consumed many a meal there. Even bussed tables and washed dishes from time to time. And gave the waitresses back rubs between shifts. So...
After packing up some things in my storage unit tomorrow morning, I will head over there for a goodbye lunch. And most likely a few hugs and tears.
...This is the last part of "my Richmond"... I guess I am a New Yorker now after all.

That's right, buster!

All this recent talk of The Woman in White, ALW and now the "Titanic" DVD release, has reminded of a joke...
You're in a room with Genghis Khan, Ivan the Terrible and Andrew Lloyd Webber.
You have a gun.
You only have two bullets.
Question: What do you do?

What's it to ya?!?!?!?

Jose, I guess with Edwina gone Stella decided retire. I’m sorry but at least you have a chance to say goodbye, exchange addresses & keep in touch.
I wish I had had the opportunity to say goodbye to Andy, the owner of my favorite Mexican restaurant Rebozo’s. Andy watched me grow up, gave me extra’s and even let me work/play behind the counter. He would set the jukebox to “Green Eyes” (I don’t know the official name) when I was there. He was such a sweet dear man. If only I had known to ask for a few of the recipes.

My take on that necklace is that it is NOT hers. It was intended to be a wedding gift. She feigned death to avoid marrying. The necklace just happened to be in the pocket of her fiancee's jacket. But unlike an engagement ring, I don't think of that necklace as belonging to anyone since her fiancee's family collected insurance on it.
I think she did the right thing.
(But don't hate me for it -- :D)

What kind of bread?

Possession is 9/10ths of the law. Besides, even if she out-right stole it, the statute of limitations is only...what, three years? She had it all that time and could have legally sold it or done anything that she wanted with it. Just my 2¢. ;)
-
Ron I thought her finance knew there was a chance she was alive and had the necklace. It has been awhile so I won’t dispute your fact.
Don’t hate me….. ;D I still think it was a big shame to throw the necklace into the water where it might never be seen again.
-
I remember when the movie came out and there were ads in all the magazines for reproductions of the necklace (for only $29.95!). My niece just HAD to have one (still does, too). Anyway, I was in a local review called "Magic of Broadway" and they did songs that won the Academy Award© for Best Song. My friend Claudia sang it and borrowed the necklace for the performances. It was funny that so many people after the show wanted to see the necklace up close! (It was returned to my niece in perfect condition...I made sure of that. :D)

Tomorrow is big day for us. The floor guy is returning to sand the hardwood floors. Since the new kitchen floor is an extension of an existing floor several rooms need to be sanded and stained. This will be the most difficult portion of the kitchen remodel, for us anyway.
Off to watch MEDIUM with Keith.
-
Good floor sanding vibes to DR Jane and DH Keith

I just read on Playbill.com that Hugh Jackman is going to star in a tour of The Boy From Oz in Australia! HERE (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/95870.html) is the article. Tomovoz, is this something you'd be interested in? They have a quote from Hugh:
"I am so excited and honoured to be returning to the Australian stage in The Boy From Oz," said Jackman in a release. "The Boy From Oz is a celebration of not only a great Australian, but of what it means to be Australian, and I look forward to celebrating Peter Allen's life in a thrilling tour with a great Australian cast. After a year with the show on Broadway I can't wait to sing 'I Still Call Australia Home' IN Australia'."
They also have a website for this tour: www.theboyfromoz.com.au (http://www.theboyfromoz.com.au)

What kind of bread?
It's her "table bread". I'd say it's an egg bread - kind of like a more structured challah but with butter in it. I dunno. It's just sooo good. I used to buy loaves from her all the time. Sometimes, if I was luckly, I would get a loaf fresh out of the oven... That aroma, that taste! No butter needed. But butter made it even better! ;) I would walk around the halls at school, and just let people tear off a chunk - share the goodness. However, it's also very good once it cools down, and it's a good sandwich bread too. Great toast too! And perfect for grilled cheese - it manages to crisp up on the outside just enough while staying soft on in the "inside". I think I tried it once for French Toast, but it was a bit on the savory side.
As fas as I know, only three - possibly four - people have the recipe: Stella, Katrina (her daughter), Virginia (one of her former cooks), and her current head chef. -Oh, and I know that one of her former cooks "stole" the recipe a few years ago - that was not a pretty scene. I've asked for it before, but I've always received a very polite but firm, "No."
However, a part of me would not mind it still being a secret, a mystery... a very fond memory.
-
...But I do think she'll share the recipe for her apple-walnut-cinnamon streusel loaf. That's her traditional holiday bread... and gift to her regulars. I swear a single loaf weighs at least two and a half pounds, if not three - it's just jam-packed with goodness! And that streusel layer is at least a 1/2-inch thick!
We shall see.
-
...And if had I not seen the article in Style, and come back a few weeks later for a visit to discover that Stella's was gone... Well... I don't want to think about that...
-
I never thought of that before. It's quite true that she never told them she had the necklace, even though in the telling of the story, we see that she has it after being rescued.
Yeah, and it's sort of implied that young Rose will use the necklace in order to make due by herself in the world. As it turned out, she was able to have this incredibly wonderful life on her own without cashing in on the necklace. I think the main reason she agreed to come back to the Titanic was for the purpose of tossing the necklace into the sea, where it should have been all along.
And now I feel compelled to sing:
Near!
Far!
Wherever you are!
I believe that the heart does go on!
-
bk- I believe I've cracked the code. If you can read this, I have.

DR Jose, I am glad you are going to get to see Stella and Stella's one more time...that was a nice story!
And you gave backrubs to the waitresses!....Well, I imagine there must have been a waiter or two who got rubbed by you as well ;)
-
Welcome to brand spanking new DR macchus!
-
Welcome Macchus, and congrats!
Were you on the old HHW board? Your name sounds very familiar!
-
Macchus has been trying to post for eons, but his password was forgotten and then time went by. He is indeed a poster from the old board and a frequent Unseemly Trivia Contest winner.
-
Yes, I've been around, winning trivia contests, but so retarded in other ways that it has taken me this long to figure out how to log in with my password. I'm still not sure if I have it right. We'll know soon enough.
-
I used to be a Spanish/French double major. I'm pretty fluent in Spanish, but I really don't remember much French.
Sorry to have been E&T today - busy day at work and I've been cleaning all night in preparation for my family's visit this weekend. I reek of bleach right now.
-
I hope those of you who got the new WIZARD OF OZ will give us your impressions. I've read so many divergent views on it.
-

Alas, no waiters... Oh, wait, there was Bryan....
:)
Memories...
-
I had read that about Hugh Jackman touring Australia in THE BOY FROM OZ last week. The show is made special by his participation in it. You certainly try to see it if you can with him in it.
-
Well, it truly has been a long day for me - I kept thinking it was 'earlier' all day. ;)
So... This WUSSBURGER WITH EXTRA CHEESE is heading to bed...
Goodnight.

Burned a DVD copy of MIDNIGHT LACE for myself this afternoon, and I suspect if Universal is planning on doing a commercial DVD release, the print used will also be the one on the DVD (hopefully anamorphically encoded). It looks splendid.
Curiously, at the beginning of the film, we got the dreaded "this film has been modified, etc. . . . " but it wasn't full frame at all. The letterboxing was present the entire time.
This film had a great cast, and I can remember that it actually scared me the first time I watched it. And there are SO many red herrings.
-
However, John Gavin does just about the most feeble British accent ever attempted by an A-list American actor. Honestly, I don't know why he even bothered.
-
MIDNIGHT LACE ended with two minutes to spare before the start of SUPERNATURAL. Good episode this week that stole a bit from both I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER and THE FOG.
Best thing about the episode was a welcome return of Dan Butler playing a preacher who figures greatly in the plot of the episode. Always loved him on FRASIER, and he isn't used enough as a guest star.
I'd love to see him have his own series, too. He can play comedy or drama with equal ease.
-
Then I continued with CITIZEN COHN. I'm guessing certain flashbacks were filmed with extra grain because some of this film is very sharp and clear and other parts look grainy and lacking sharpness.
Or, it could simply have been shoddy encoding of the disc. The DVD is quite a few years old, and transfer techniques are better now.
-
I, on the other hand, did NOT get any DVDs today in the mail, but I did enjoy the soundtrack to KISS ME KATE as I did my cleaning this afternoon.
And I wouldn't be surprised if my WIZARD OF OZ doesn't even come tomorrow. I got my shipping notice on Monday afternoon, and sometimes, that can mean a day later for the package to arrive.
-
No DR TCB - not ME!! Edward R. Murrow!
-
DR GEORGE my sister Molly also got one of the 29.95 Heart of the Ocean necklaces....still causes comments when she wears it.
TITANIC ALTERNATE ENDING SPOILER
According to the script...and I assume the alternate ending....Brock sees Rose holding the necklace over the ocean and implores her not to drop it.
Rose: I came all the way here so this could go back where it belongs.
Brock: Just let me hold it in my hand, Rose. Please. Just once.
He comes closer to her. It is reminiscent of Jack slowly moving up to her at the stern of Titanic. Surprisingly, she calmly places the massive stone in the palm of his hand, while still holding onto the necklace. Brock gazes at the object of his quest. An infinity of cold scalpels glint in its blue depths. It is mesmerizing. It fits in his hand just like he imagined.
Brock: My God.
His grip tightens on the diamond. He looks up, meeting her gaze. Her eyes are suddenlty infinitely wise and deep.
Rose: You look for treasure in the wrong place, Mr Lovett. Only life is priceless, and making each day count.
His fingers relax, he opens them slowly. Gently she slips the diamond out of his hand. He feels it sliding away.
Then with an impish little grin, Rose tosses the necklace over the rail.....

Hi All!
NYC update- it is freaking freezing here! What the heck happened to fall, don't we get to have one??
End of rant.
-
Bed time.
-
I'm heading for bed myself. Almost midnight here, and tomorrow is another day (a Margaret Mitchell reference).
-
John Gavin was an A-list actor? Maybe more of a B+.
I would like for Hugh Jackman to tour Oregon.
-
Ann and I just spent two hours in rather intense debate over an upcoming ballot measure. Do we know how to party or what?!?
She's ready to agree to disagree, but I think that I'm making a little progress in helping her see the light, so I think I'll have to be stubborn and work on her a little more over the next two weeks. :D
-
Night JRand55!
-
TOD: I took French all through elementary school, 5 years worth, and have basically retained nothing.
I learned a lot of Spanish as a wee youngster- my "Grandma" Carmen was fluent and would speak it with my sister and I when she took care of us during our pre-school years. Unfortunately when I went to kindergarten, kids had trouble understanding some of my spanglish and I quickly dropped it. I took Spanish in 7th grade as an elective and then for all four years in high school. I got pretty conversant but didn't pass the AP exam for college credit (although in my defense I had a horrible cold that day). I took it for a few semesters in college and then stopped pursuing it more out of laziness than anything else. A lot of it is gone now, but my goal upon graduation is to take some intensive courses and work toward becoming fluent. It will greatly expand the work that I will be able to do as a social worker.
-
I hope those of you who got the new WIZARD OF OZ will give us your impressions. I've read so many divergent views on it.
holy hell, I haven't even made it to the MOVIE yet! I've been enjoying disc two and three's wealth of information (far more than The Ultimate Oz).
Of course my eyes are still gaga over seeing what Peter Jackson looks like without all of his baby fat. . .and how much of that baby fat has worked its way onto Randy Newman. . .now, if I could just take off five pounds. . .
-
I took two years of high school Spanish and that's it. I retained enough that I was able to substitute teach for first year classes and fool the students into believing that I really knew what I was doing. Also knew enough for the bilingual and ESL middle schoolers to realize that they couldn't get away with saying things they shouldn't say just because they were speaking Spanish.
I can understand a decent bit of French, along with some Italian, German, and Latin. Years of singing choral and solo repertoire comes in handy, I guess. My music background has given me solid pronunciation for German, Italian, and Latin... French takes a bit more work and always results in my writing International Phonetic Alphabet pronunciations in my score.
-

It's comforting to hear that other couples have these kinds of discussions. Just ask Rodzinski about the many debates I have sparked after returning home from class...
-
Okay, I must go to bed now if I am going to be at all coherent tomorrow morning at work.
-
I wouldn't have the DVD of The Titanic in my house if someone paid me to take the flatulent ponderous piece of poop.

I wouldn't have the DVD of The Titanic in my house if someone paid me to take the flatulent ponderous piece of poop.
But. . .have you seen NORTH BY NORTHWEST? I rewatched it the night before last.
-
Nine forty-five and I'm the only one in the jernt.
-
I am suffering from a certain inertia this evening. I really was hoping to watch a DVD, but couldn't focus. Instead, I watched last week's Alias. Someone, somewhere, put this completely inept show out of its misery. It is painful to watch. Who wants to see a pregant Sydney Bristow. It's just nonsense. This complete boob known as Jennifer Garner, dumps Michael Vartan, immediately takes up with Ben Affleck, immediately gets pregnant, putting Alias in total turmoil - and for her boobish behavior she is made a producer and, I'm sure, will direct another episode as ineptly as she did last season. A classic case of an actor running amok and everyone saying, "Sure, whatever you want." When she announced her pregnancy, she should have been replaced - it was the only chance the show had. Vartan isn't the one who should have gone. And that, my droogs, is how I feel about that. The fact that people are getting paid unbelievable amounts of money to turn out such pathetic drivel is, as always, nauseating.
-
I have just gotten home from my first orchestra concert in three years. I am really tired. I also think I might be hungry.
Good night.
-
I've seen Mr Jackman in "Beauty & the Beast" an in "Sunset Boulevard". I saw Todd McKenny in "The Boy From OZ".
I have no desire to see "The Boy From Oz" again - no matter how hard its star works! McKenny was very good too. Both cast Cds sit on the shelves like so much fish!!
-
I finally figure out how to post, now everyone posts their photos. There's just no way I can keep current.
-
Welcome DR macchus.

Are you talking about the avatars? You, too, can post an avatar photo by going into "edit profile" and adding the link to it (just click on "browse" to find your photo on your computer). If you don't have a photo on your computer, I can send you an Ernest Ernest photo.

A couple of days ago, I won a copy of BK's very own "Classical Broadway" CD from his former label, Bay Cities! It's coming from England and, even with shipping, it cost only $10.51! I don't know how long it'll take to get here, but I'm really looking forward to it. So, is it any good?
;)
-
It's mostly very good, especially the Harvey Schmidt and Cy Coleman pieces.
-
Cool! Thanks. ;D
-
I really had no doubt.
