Well, you've read the notes, the notes were in a nutshell for some reason, and now it is time for you to post until the nutty cows come home.

This morning I've got to go down to the road and see if I can chip away and clear any of the massive snow piled up around the mailboxes. Two of us whose mailboxes are on the same pole (I'll take a picture) are not getting mail delivered because the USPS driver can longer reach the boxes from across the snow bank.

Anyone got a flame thrower I can borrow?

DR George, thanks for posting the picture of the b&w Wait Until Dark.

For my eyes, "live" b&w just doesn't quite work. There's too much color in real life, what with our own flesh tones, the colors inherent in lighting, etc., and the illusion is never complete.

I was involved in such a production in, let's see, 2013. My recently retired director friend had been coerced into doing Adrift in Macao in place of something else, I forget the circumstances now. He had already taught the cast their music and at the last minute brought me in to play/conduct the 5-piece band, which was nice. We enjoyed much of the music and craziness of the show, but it was a flop in that they never were able to entice an audience to attend. Anyway, he staged it "in b&w" in view of its noir-ish setting, and the conceit only worked to a certain extent. It never really became believable, and it was a distraction when you'd remember - oh yeah, that's what they're doing here. Hopefully a more professional venue can do better than this place did, but I have me doubts.

Bottom line, Adrift could probably have used all the gimmicky help it could get. Wait Until Dark only needs fine actors and a director (and theeder) who follow the stage directions to the letter. It's one of those perfect pieces that only needs to be done right.

Post by: ChasSmith on January 30, 2026, 05:43:17 AM
Whoa. I'm just remembering that I saw a different local theeder do a noir-ish play "in b&w" only a year ago...and that one (in this regard) was a TOTAL fail.

Disclaimer:  I wasn't in the mood to see it in the first place, but I kind of had to. And I didn't end up liking the casting or the play itself much, anyway. And, get this -- it took me a good long while to even discern that it was, in fact, supposed to be "b&w". To their credit, they didn't make that a selling point. It was done in support of the material, to hopefully enhance audience appreciation, perhaps subliminally. But from Row 3, Center, the set and costumes did nothing to say "oooh, look, it's in Black & White" to this viewer.

I have been involved with two "monochrome" productions, a conceit that thrives in university and amateur productions, but I find them ridiculous since (a), a DR ChasSmith pointed out, life is too full of color and (b) the scenery, costumes and props may be in shades of black, white, and gray, but what the fat hell do you do about skin tones?

I've only seen it work once: the Broadway production of The City of Angels.

I suffered through a horrible production of Kaufman and Hart’s Once in a Lifetime that was overstylized and monochromatic. There wasn’t a single joke in the evening.

Good to hear that Craig can drive his car.   As for me, there is so much snow and ice behind my car (it looks like more than there was the other day) that it's pretty hopeless.

He started his attack on the ice with a hammer.  I wish he had taken a before photo.  If the mainentance crew hadn't lent him the metal shovel he might still be out there hammering away ;D

But this is a good thing to participate in:

No work, no school, no shopping: A general strike to protest ICE is attempting to go national

If you're able, this is happening tomorrow.  Being retired makes it very easy to participate. ;)

When work is closed due to ice it too makes it easy to participate.  Otherwise, I really can't imagine participating when the children have already missed a lot of school.

Same goes for Bryan, can't imagine him leaving people stranded in the ER.  At least he isn't scheduled for today.

Nathan came home for something earlier and told me someone had knocked a bunch of the snow away from the mailboxes, but they pushed all the debris into the entrance of our driveway. So, one problem solved, another created. I went down with a shovel and spent about half an hour shovel-plowing it out of the way as best I could. I didn't get a "before" picture of the mailboxes, but you probably imagine from this...

In scanning the programs for my college musicals, I discovered that I was in my first show there with my third cousin! He was a senior, playing a villager in Fiddler on the Roof, while I was a freshman in the pit playing second trumpet. We didn't know we were distantly related back then.

In my last show with that group, The Threepenny Opera, we got a rave review from the college paper. A year later, Opera Company of Boston performed it. The same reviewer panned that production and said ours was much better! Given the simultaneous pan from The Boston Globe, I suspect he was right.

I feel like I read a crazy fact once that she had a rare condition where her organs were mirrored. Like identical halves. I don’t know why that’s in my brain.

Wait, they didn’t even use grey makeup on the Wait Until Dark actors’ skin? Error.

On a recent episode of LegoMasters Australia, the host and judge were both greyscaled. They used grey makeup and it was a good effect. You could only see a little red in the corners of their eyes or in their mouths when they spoke.

Catharine O’Hara. Such a talent.

One of my favorite SCTV sketches had her was as Lucy immobile in a chair while the chorus boys did leaps over her. Occasionally she would belch out the word “Mame” about three octaves lower than anyone else. It captured the dreadful nature of that movie perfectly.

Doctor was fine. He's going to take me off Mestinon - first down to one a day, then off, then we'll monitor, but getting off that will probably take care of the cramping crap.

Vibes the cramping stops.  If reducing solves the cramping issue you still continue to get off of it or just stay at the lower dosage?

I've seen a number of small business state their reasons for staying open today while supporting the sentiments against ICE.

I understand the need to stay open, supporting their employees by giving them work.

I did confirm this. Her organs were on opposite sides they would be on most people.

Done about six pages so far. Heading towards the end of an important chapter - maybe another two or three pages to get there, and then I'll be inches away from page 200.

Then I'd thought of a good sentence, so went back to writing, finished the important chapter and passed page 200. Twelve pages today and maybe one or two more. And then, it's the last forty pages or so.

DR George, thanks for posting the picture of the b&w Wait Until Dark.

I don't see a photo.  Where is it?

It was the last post of yesterday's posts before BK locked the day.

I saw that very blue photo, plus it looks nothing like what I think Wait Until Dark should look like.

George, you really should watch the movie.

I just placed a hold on it at the library.

I hyperlinked it directly from Harlequin's website.  I didn't upload it to the HHW photo server.

In scanning the programs for my college musicals, I discovered that I was in my first show there with my third cousin! He was a senior, playing a villager in Fiddler on the Roof, while I was a freshman in the pit playing second trumpet. We didn't know we were distantly related back then.

Very cool!

In my last show with that group, The Threepenny Opera, we got a rave review from the college paper. A year later, Opera Company of Boston performed it. The same reviewer panned that production and said ours was much better! Given the simultaneous pan from The Boston Globe, I suspect he was right.

That's great, Michael!

Has anyone heard Jimmie Herrod’s new Sondheim album, Pretty Is What Changes? First impressions were not good.

I've never heard of him, but here's his take on "Kiss Me" from Sweeney Todd:
