BK, even worse than Friedkin's remake of The Wages of Fear, was his hubris at the time of Sorcerer's release.  I remember him on some talk show...Merv Griffin, I think...pontificating, saying: "Frankly,Merv, I was going for an instant classic."  Uh...?  Sorry, Billy, even if your talent matched your arrogance, there is no such thing as an "instant" classic.  Time makes classics.  Time has not made a classic of Sorcerer.

A belated thank you to those who extended me birthday greetings yesterday.  I didn't check any of yesterday's posts until just now.
When I was growing up, my mother initiated a tradition of applying Glass Wax on all the mirrors in the house, and writing "Happy Birthday Mark", adding my numerical age, with a circle around it.  Needless to say, this got more embarrassing the older I got, and was a constant reminder that I waited way too long to leave home.
And it begs the question "Do they still make Glass Wax?

I'm up!  I went to bed at 9:30 p.m., and now I'm up.

And the reason:  I needed to take something for my "sensitivities"-that-aren't-allergies.

Anyway, it has been 5 minutes since I took an Allegra tablet.  I'm still half-asleep, sorta.  Won't have trouble going back to bed once the "works" are dried up a bit.

I watched the remainder of the "'Roseanne' House of Horrors'" from Nick at Night I taped Halloween night.  They aired four more episodes which brought back some fun memories of the series' network run.

I tried to watch "Commander in Chief" last night.

Is it just me?  Or, does the show seem a bit formulaic at this early juncture?

Way too much going on with the kids and the hubby.  And Donald Sutherland -- like a Dr. Smith on "Lost in Space" -- pursuing a devious/malicious path of self-interest at the expense of the President and the country.

I couldn't force myself to care beyond the 15-minute mark, despite Gina Davis's solid presence.

The trees that were blown over were the ficus trees. I think they should be all cut down to lessen the any future damage they might cause. They are short rooted trees.

I like FRANCIS JOINS THE WACS and MA AND PA KETTLE GO TO TOWN.

Re: Last night's AMAZING RACE

The team that lost was finally growing on me. :(

And I was sad to see Clarissa crying.

And guess what? The Paolo team is also totally growing on me.  Maybe it's because the bratty older son is now being nice (and hugging his mom all the time).  But I actually am really enjoying this team now.  I was very impressed with the father (garbageman).  That was incredible how he lifted the bananas.  I wonder which other teams would have been able to do that task (probably only the Linz family).

The next to go has to be the Weavers.  And I'm also not feeling the sisters.  But I agree, getting them out of the US has done wonders (plus now we know the teams much better).  The only thing I need is more difficult tasks.  Because last night it was simply not finding the red bean that did in the losing team!

MBarnum, did Tony Russell talk about doing dinner theatre with Kathyrn Crosby?  I believe he was playing her leading man when my friend Larry Drake was touring with her.  Didn't he come close to getting the Sergio Leone westerns that Clint Eastwood ultimately did?

Yes, Tony Russel talks about turning down Leone and instead doing a spy film in Egypt. He said that Eastwood hated making the Leone film, but of course I all turned out  good!

And he does also talk about touring with Kathryn Crosby, which he very much enjoyed. I have a couple of wonderful photos of him from that play to use for the interview.

RE: TAR,

It was a good episode, but of course I was very,  very sad to see the Gahgan's get booted. I really liked them and to see little Clarissa's face at the end just broke my heart. I just thought they were such a neat family....not a mean streak in them...and very supportive of each other...and just having a fun, good time!

I also am starting to like the Paolo's, and disliking the Weavers!

And it is now getting to the point where it is easier to identify the various teams...when there are a lot of teams it can be difficult.

My favortie FRANCIS film is FRANCIS AT WEST POINT because it has both Lori Nelson and William Reynolds....oh, and Gregg Palmer. But I of course enjoy FRANCIS JOINS THE WACs also.

My favorite Ma and Pa Kettle film is MA AND PA KETTLE ON OLD MCDONALD'S FARM with guest stars Gloria Talbott and John Smith.

Another friend of mine who worked with Ms Crosby in PETER PAN here in Indy in the 1960's had nothing but kind words for her.  He said that she was wonderful to the kids - was very friendly with ALL of the people who worked on the show - and never turned down a radio, television, or newspaper interview to tout the show.

In the end, he decided she was not the BEST Peter Pan ever, but that it was great experience for everyone involved.

That being said - now I think she should shoot her plastic surgeon.

I always buy the I LOVE LUCY 12 month calendar AND a calendar that has BIG spaces to write in.  I also buy a small 16 month calendar diary to carry with me in my briefcase to remind me of important dates and conflicts at the theatre!

Re calendars:

We always get the For the Love of Welsh Corgis calendar as our appointment calendar on the wall, and already have the 2006 edition.  (Actually, I got the 2006 edition back in September, as soon as I saw we were starting to book things for 2006.)  Little by little, they've been making the boxes with the dates smaller and putting in more photos, so if it continues at this rate, by 2008, it might no longer be functional for writing in appointments and such.  But I guess they've figured out it sells better with more pictures and smaller boxes to write things in.

It almost goes without saying that we have another spectacular day here. We have been without rain for a long day with day upon day filled with nothing but sunshine and moderate temperatures, and I'm sure folks who are cultivating growing things are desperately in need of water. No rain in the forecast either plus it's going to start to warm up over the next five days with temps getting near 80 by the end of the week.

I love the page-a-day calendars. Obviously, I have the I LOVE LUCY one that I've been getting pics from for the page dances, and downstairs I have a JEOPARDY one.

They made a CSI daily calendar for two years, but last year, I couldn't find one, and I haven't seen one out for this coming year either at the book stores that are already putting out their 2006 calendars.

I really don't care for FRANCIS THE TALKING MULE at all, but my favorite KETTLE movie is the second one of the series (not counting THE EGG AND I, of course), MA AND PA KETTLE GO TO TOWN.

Most critics seem to think MA AND PA KETTLE AT HOME is the best one. I'm not sure I remember it, but I assume it's on one of the KETTLE DVD sets. I haven't watched any of them since I got them.

Two moments from MA & PA KETTLE GO TO TOWN.

They win a trip to New York City.  At Penn Station his name is mentioned and a wealthy manufacturer assumes he is P.A. Kettle, owner of a men's undergarment concern.  Later Pa is changing his clothes in their 25th floor suite at the Waldorf-Astoria.  The manfacturer calls him to invite him to a party.  Pa answers the phone wearing his long johns.  There is some mix up about identities....then:

Parker:  Well aren't you the Kettle in underwear?

PA: Well, yes I am, but how did you know?

Parker:  Why everyone in New York knows.

PA: Just a minute. (and he goes to pull down the window shade).

Later PA picks up a bag with $10,000 in stolen money.  There is a big society shindig where the crooks show up to reclaim it.  To stall for time before the police arrive, PA arranges a square dance - and begins the call - with the bag of money going in all directions:

PA: Swing your partner, do-si-do, grab that bag, Ma, don't let go!"

Since you give them the order in advance have you ever considered giving them a deadline 2 days before you need them.  That way the next time they are late, you will still be on time.

Yes, I've done that - street date is the 15th, and I gave them over two weeks in advance.  On the site it says early copies will ship prior to that date, and they will.  So, I feel as long as I ship out a week in advance at least, that all is well.  I'm ever hopeful that the CDs will be here late today, but it may be tomorrow.  Won't matter if it's tomorrow, as I'm out all day.

I agree. I think it was the same thing that turned me off in the beginning.  But I really love how they encouraged the kids.  Even though the kids obviously hampered which activities they could do.  Last night if they had been able to do the bananas, they probably would not have lost.

Well second or third is not too bad, considering they are just a bunch of kids running the race on their own. I do think this team has the most potential to win.  But they are not THAT good, which worries me.

They are making me crazy!  And i agree with you about the bransen sisters. They do seem to be one person. I cannot tell them apart! (and that cannot be good).

It seems like each team has a weak player who cannot keep up with the others in physical tasks.  But without wally for example, i wonder if his daughters would get totally lost!  Although the previews make it look like daddy and girls are not getting along too well!

Well I am one of the ones who disliked them quite a bit (until last week).

I think it was because they acted like they were perfect.  And it annoyed me.

I don't want to see Mr. and Mrs. Perfect with 2 little kids who think they are perfect.

But I think once they started not doing so well, it became more apparent to me that they just wanted to try their best.  And I did really like watching how they encouraged their kids.

Does anyone else think that most of the calendars (especially the tv ones) are horribly done.  I would love to have a DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES calendar.  But what they did was so unattractive.  I'd love to see group shots, or scenes from the show.  But instead they have solo photos which are not appealing (at least not to me).  I find many shows take this same uninteresting approach). :(

Is watching a spaghetti western part of the prep?

THE PRODUCER by Christopher Davis.  I had never heard of this book, but it is:  :...an account of some months in the life of Hilly Elkins, the producer of OH CALCUTTA.....THE ROTHSCHILDS....and HEDDA GABLER (starring [his wife] Claire Bloom...."

Hmmmmmm.....

When I was in Junior and Senior High School, I would get a Snoopy School-Year Calendar every year.  It made more sense to me than getting a calendar that started the year in January, since I'm August-born.

I would also give my father a weekly calendar from the Sierra Club.  Not only was it filled with gorgeous photography, but there was lots of space for Dad to make notes from work.

Update from the pressing plant - they are pressing the discs now, and say they will be on their way to me at one.  While I would like to believe that, I'll assume one will be three.  So, I may, in fact, be able to get out some of the CDs today, if the post office isn't too crazy.  I have a four o'clock meeting here, so whatever I do has to be done by then.

Now, if they were to arrive by one, I could probably get most of them out today.

I have to tell DR Jose how much I am enjoying his daily journal of LESTAT. Your excitement and enthusiasm are so entertaining to read, and I wanted you to know how happy I am for you and hope it's just the beginning of a long and illustrious career in the "pits" of Broadway.

Bravo!

That reminds me--a question for DR Jose:

Is LESTAT based on INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE or on LESTAT THE VAMPIRE?

My oldest sister was a Glass Wax artist!  Every Christmas she did our front windows with little snowflakes, wreaths, candles and candy canes.  It was beautiful.

The one time I tried my hand at it, it was an unholy mess.  Drips and smears and soggy stencils.  Not in my bag of talents.

I guess the Gaghans acting perfect completely went over our heads.  We have had the highest admiration for how they dealt with such young kids.  I can tell you if my boys had been on that show, we would have made the Paolos look like the Cleavers.  ;)  That's why we liked the Gaghans so much--they were a crash course in good parenting.  Surprised they raised so many hackles, but I guess that's what makes horse racing.

I've been at the copy machine the past couple of hours.  Have to copy all files pertaining to three County leases for the Superior Court of California as they are entering "due diligence" preparatory to taking over the leases themselves.

I can only say, "I HATE STAPLES"!!!

And I mean those little wire thingies, not the office supply store.

Removing those staples takes far more time than the copying...and I have thousands and thousands of sheets of paper (more than 20 years worth in the case of one lease) to copy (between now and Nov. 21).

DR JMK - speaking just for MYSELF.  They symbolized to me the complete wrecking of the premise of THE AMAZING RACE for the FAMILY EDITION of a show that I really enjoyed the way it was.  I thought they ran a good race - but I didn't want to see a FAMILY edition.  I want my regular AMAZING RACE back....which I think we will get next time.

General word is that the producers are NOT happy with the results of this particular edition and are VERY aware that regular fans of the show are also VERY unhappy.  8)

Ha, ha ha.  That last comment made me laugh.  Well yah, you always cheer for the goody goody team who usually cannot race well but seems nice.  I know i usually cheer for the team i think races the best.

I think it was probably only the first episode that made many of us not care for the Gaghans.  So perhaps people who missed that episode, or who didn't pay that much attention to each team (not like those of us who are obcessed with the show did!).  Or perhaps DR Jrand was right.  The Gaghans really symbolize the family aspect of the show, much more than the other teams.  I mean most of them are over 18, with only a few that are 15+ (and they didn't really seem like kids).

Anyhow I think on HHW we usually disagree with who we like and dislike.  Plus a lot of it is in the editing. We all agreed that the Paolos were horrible, and now that they are editing them better, most of us like them!

The fact is that the ratings are down for this edition, and that's what has made the producers so unhappy. If the show had better ratings than the two last season, we'd see another family edition next year, but since the ratings have not been very good, they're going to go back to the tried and true.

"East of Eden" is DR Colin's favourite movie of all time!

It's a marvelous film, and I think it's James Dean's best performance. I'm not sure I wouldn't have voted for him over Ernest Borgnine in MARTY had I been an Academy member in 1955. The three other nominees were James Cagney in LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME, Spencer Tracy in BAD DAY AT BLACK ROCK, and Frank Sinatra in THE MAN WITH A GOLDEN ARM.

I spent the entire afternoon with TWO FOR THE ROAD. The picture has been restored and compared to the laserdisc looks astoundingly good. Now, if I had my druthers, I might have wished for punchier colors, but there is a restoration comparison on the DVD that shows what it has looked like in various stages of its video life, and what we have now overall is unquestionably the best.

When that exquisite Henry Mancini main title sweeps around you in vibrant surround stereo, it's sheer heaven.

Today is the fifth day since vixmom's last post.

Does anyone know what's going on???

Thanks for asking.  I just finished catching up, but I must sign off again .

On Friday night we had a Halloween party and one of  children mentioned feeling "dizzy and funny"  but he was weariing a heavy plastic mask and sunning around so his mom told him to take the mask off and settle down.  The Vixter, as the oldest of the children was the self apponted babysitter in the games room and kpet all the kids entertained and took particular care of this littel boy.

On Saturday and Sunday after her 8:45 AM dentist appointment, she had to rebuild her catapult for tech class  becasue two boys fooling around in class on Friday managed to knock it off the desk and smash it beyond repair.  Although her tech teacher saw the whole thing and told her not to worry about it, this week they were actually gpoingto be launchin gtheir missels and she didn't want to miss the action so she got vixdad to take her to the hobby shop  bought all the materials and spent her whole day doing  what had taken her the whole semester to do the first time.  She finished up in time for bed.

Sunday morning she was the acolyte at church then home to complete her Anne of Green Gables  final project whichj took her to dinner time and then her Youth Group  party.  Because she was using the computer for typing her paper in between setting up the catapult and pasting things on her "Anne" poster I was effectivly banned from using the computer!

She worked until 6;30 then quickly donned her  POTO costume and went to the church Youth Group  Costume Party

Monday morning  she went to school complaining about a slight couigh and a minor sore throat.  At 10 Am I got a call from the school nurse.. she feels funny and dizzy and she has a temp of 102 F

So off to get her and off to the DR who says possible streph throat  and puts her on anitbiotics.  Home we go wher she lies on the couch watching  The NIght mare BeFore Christmas.

Saddest part of the day... she asks me. " Is it ok if I don't go trick or treating? Please can't I stay home?"

 :'(

Then yesterday I stayed home with her.  Today she stayed home with my folks.

And now I must go deliver something for work.

Laters!!

Hello, DR Matt H.

Are you in fine fettle this afternoon?  Did "Two for the Road" arrive in the mail?

Ha ha! How's that for an instant response?  :D

I can't think of any film that so deftly combines humor, heartbreak, romance, drama, and slapstick.

And Albert Finney and Audrey Hepburn are simply two gods living on Earth. Finney has never looked as good, and Audrey, well, she's perfection.

I started the film over a second time to listen to Stanley Donen's commentary. There are long gaps between comments as he seems to be watching and enjoying the picture as it runs, but it's worth listening to especially if you love this movie as much as I do.

TWO FOR THE ROAD is probably my favorite Henry Mancini score (if it isn't, CHARADE is). Naturally, it was no Oscar nominated in 1967.

The nominees (and they're all good, too): COOL HAND LUKE, DOCTOR DOLITTLE, FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD, IN COLD BLOOD, and the winner, THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE.

"Far From the Madding Crowd" is the best of the nominees...IMO.

Simply glorious score for a great film.

THAT film NEEDS to be out on DVD!

I've never seen "Pinky", and I'm looking forward to "Daddy Long Legs"...which has always seemed rather chopped up in TV showings I've seen.

I hope it's the complete film.

I wish they'd issue "The Rains of Ranchipur" in stereo.

Magnificent music by Hugo Friedhofer and Lana is spectacular as the temptress/slut/lady.

I feel sure they will issue it complete. I find a lot to like, but I think it's too long. Astaire and Caron each get  lengthy dream ballets apiece which really slows down the momentum. I love Astaire, but sometimes, even his dream numbers lack true inspiration.

Hello!  I'm back from the first round of rehearsals with the cast and orchestra.  Leslie Uggams loved the chart for STORMY WEATHER, so that's a big pat on my shoulder and a big weight off my back.  The cast is quite good, and I think the concert will be wonderful.  Robert Osborne of TCM arrived today as well.  He will be narrating.  Ms Uggams, her husband Graham, Robert and Abby Kimball, Michael Kerker of ASCAP, and Betty Auman of the Library of Congress music division had a tasty lunch with the conductor Aaron Gandy, before they all went back to rehearsal and I came to my favorite Kinko's to check in with you all.

I had another great discovery yesterday:  my hotel is kitty-corner from the parking garage which occupies the space filled in 1903 by Chicago's Grand Opera House, where BABES IN TOYLAND opened on June 17, 1903.  I've been looking for the site for the past two years and I cannot believe I'm staying across from it!

Dear Friend BK, Carolee and Jonathan said hello to me via DRJose because I asked him to convey my good wishes.  I don't recall your asking hyim to do the same.  Besides, I thought you were pissed at Ms Caramello?

Tonight, I help Aaron make some fixes in his orchestration to MY SHINING HOUR; it's got wonderful moments but there are a couple of spots where he's asked for help.

Back tomorrow!

It has also been all over the nes today that bandleader Skitch Henderson died. I guess it dates me to remember him, but I certainly do.

I once scored for full orchestra the Waltzes from ANYONE CAN WHISTLE with Steve's permission.  I took the full score to Skitch when the New York Pops was formed to try to get an arranging job with him.  He took my score on the grounds he needed to get an estimate on copying parts and never returned it despite several requests from me.  I'm not sorry he's dead.

I heard something on the radio this a.m. about Skitch Henderson and how he got his name.

Apparently, he possessed an amazing gift for arranging and could arrange a song in any key you wanted.  Folks who knew him started calling him "Sketch"...and then somebody famous, I forget who, told folks to change his billing to "Skitch"...and the name instantly took hold and the deed was done.

We had a beautiful night for Halloween here, very mild, around 70 degrees, and no wind.  We live on a main road anad we decorate... we have a lighted halloween archway over the path , a graveyard complete with bones, skulls and fog machine,  walking skeleton steps, and disembodied heads on the front porch that are sound activated and leap and screech if you get near them.

We get a LOT of trick  or treaters!  Vixdad dressed in a black robe and a scull mask and skull hands and comes out with the candy and quizzes the children about why they're there ,  kids without costumes get one peice of candy, kids in costumes get a handful.

We usually decorate more than we did this year,  but it was so rainy hti s ointh the spider webs and swinging ghosts didin't make it up

However sonce most of the houses on the block didn't even get anything up becasue of the rain we still were one of the, most decorated houses around.

So true, DR JMK.  Mr Crosby was for many years a spokesperson for Minute Maid Orange Juice, and Frances would have been on TV for one of their newer Frozen Orange Juice concentrates at $50,000 per year, if ONLY that MM executive had not asked her what Tyrone Power was "really" like.

Frances closed the meeting down with her reply - much like Faye AS Joan in the Pepsi board meeting.

I have questions for DR’s George, TCB, Jed and Ann.
How long a drive from Seattle are you?
Did you notice my post stating we will be in Seattle on July 1st? :)
Did I miss a response to said statement?

I did notice your post and I responded (http://www.haineshisway.com/community/index.php?board=4;action=display;threadid=821;start=msg156557#msg156557) to your statement. ;D Depending on traffic, it can take me an hour to an hour and a half (at the most...so far) to go from Olympia to Seattle.

That's Mercedes doing the voice of Regan in "The Exorcist," not in her Oscar-winning role in "All the King's Men."

Tonight I discovered semi-frozen fresh broccoli doesn’t taste great when microwaved.  Gosh spell check says microwaved isn’t a word.  I’m using it anyway. ;D

With one little hot-plate I can’t steam my veggies while cooking basmati & it needs to be toasted in olive oil first.   Now I have typed a fragmented sentence.  Sometimes I really don’t have time to fragment my sentences properly. ::)

My point in babbling is.... I sure hope our spare refrigerator doesn’t give out on us before the new kitchen is completed.  Yes, the new frig was installed, however, we still haven’t chosen new hardware for the cabinets and without hardware on our new sub-zero I can’t open it.

Most "spell check" features have limited vocabulary.  Thus, we must edu-ma-cate them every chance we get.

"Microwaved" is most definitely a word...

For anyone who followed the "link" I posted in (and have since deleted from) my previous post, apologies.

It was a page that came up when I googled "microwaved."  I read only the article and thought it interesting that a man in China, under directions from his doctor, actually "microwaved his penis" and burned it, necessitating parts of it be removed.

Other things on that page, though, were not something I'd willingly direct anyone toward.

Thus, anyone who might have been offended, I apologize.

Okay, I have to know how you do this.  How much oil, and how long do you toast the basmati?  Till it turns golden?

And then, do you cook it as instructed on the package??

And what taste difference does the toasting offer up??

Ron my friend from India makes delicious basmati.  She taught me to toast it in ghee, stirring constantly, until the pieces easily break in half, then add salt & double the amount of water.  Simmer for 15 minutes.  On a daily basis I prefer to use olive oil.  I do a thick coat of oil (experiment to taste) depending on how much basmati I add.  Now I just toast the basmati, stirring fairly often, until it looks about right.

I-5 goes through both Olympia and Tacoma.  Tacoma is about half-way between Olympia and Seattle.  Since there are three people in Tacoma and just little ol' me here, I'd be more than willing to drive up north a bit and have us all meet some place close to Jed, Ann and TCB.  Not a problem at all. ;D

I had the choice of watching STAR WARS III tonight or WAR OF THE WORLDS, and I chose the latter.

They have restored the movie beautifully. No more print damage, and most of it looks very sharp, clear, and colorful. The wires on the Martian ships are more visible than ever due to the high resolution of DVD, but that didn't lessen the enjoyment of the film at all for me. Seems like there were a couple of scenes in the DVD version that weren't on my VHS version, but I could be wrong. I haven't watched the movie in five or six years.

After I finished WAR OF THE WORLDS, I watched the very well done documentary on the making of the film. Gene Barry and Ann Robinson were both present, of course, along with quite a few other people either involved with the picture or who have written about George Pal, sci-fi, etc.

There are two separate commentaries on the disc, but I wanted to hear with stereo track (very effective, especially the sounds of the Martian ships blipping out of the rear speakers as other things are coming from the center and fronts. Nice.

Yesterday when I was doing some testing on the home theater setup I had installed, I landed on WIN A DATE WITH TAD HAMILTON on HBO-HD. I never saw this film in the theater and never watched it on HBO the numerous times it's been shown over the last few months.

However, the scene happened to have both Sean Hayes and Nathan Lane in it, and I had no idea either one of them was in the movie, so I programmed the DVR to pick up the next showing of the film so I could finally watch it. That will happen at some point this weekend, too, I suspect.

Tonight's LAW & ORDER episode featured a story concerning sterilization. The subject was interesting enough just on that, but who should turn out to be the defense attorney but Richard Brooks playing Paul Robinette who was with the show as a regular during its first three seasons. Hey y'all...

I'm about to go back and read today's column and postings, but before I do, a few loose ends from yesterday:

Dan, in my head it's definitely Dinah.  I don't think the other recordings compare.  I've got about three or four different Dinah cds and at least two of them have that one on it... and nobody gets the heartbreak and the desperation, hence the joy and beauty that she gives you.

Jose,  I will pass that info along to Geoff, Rachel, Sara, Dave, and Nikole.  PS they may be looking for someone to play for something Monday... I'll have to check on that.  E-mail me if I forget:  joydewing@verizon.net.

Jason, you sound so much like me.  We really should have cocktails.

Everyone else, thanks for the vociferous welcomes back.  Catch up with y'all soon!

OH and DR Jose and everyone else:

Re the Juliana-esque Journal idea:  There's a great online "journal" called Confessions of a Broadway Actor that is brilliantly smart-assy and true-to-life, and it's Anonymous so nobody gets in trouble.  Of course, you can probably figure it out if you work hard enough... but it gives me the idea that there should be a similar thing, kind of a "Confessions of a Broadway Accompanist" column, where we get the real dish (nothing that could hurt anyone or their career, of course) about a Broadway gig.  Don't anyone take this the wrong way, but I always felt that was something that was lacking in J's Journal.  She had to be careful about what she reported because her career was at stake.  She couldn't really say anything that might be construed as negative or tell any juicy tales, because everyone knows who she is.  Just a thought... hm....

Okay, still catching up!

Elmore, I spent the better part of my day today searching the world with a fine-tooth comb to find a Young Lena Horne to cast in "Stormy Weather".  Howw about that.  I think we came up with some FINE ideas and I hope they'll be pleased.

Jane, how about cooking the rice and the veggies at the same time, in the same pot, by using a steamer basket and just plunking it on top of the rice in the pot and then closing the lid; or the same idea with just the right size strainer?  You might have to wrap tin foil around the lid to seal it off a little better, but that might kill two birds with one hot plate!

Jose, thanks for reminding me that I need to get on that Sweeney Todd business.  I must see that show.  Wish I could be there on opening night to bow obsequiously to Patti and drool over Michael... I have this thing about the Cerveris boys.  Mmmm, Cerveris-wich... mmmmm.... *drool*

...And as for me keeping a journal...  It really would be tricky especially when it comes to "juicy" stuff - or even serious happenings backstage.  Yes, I'd be more than happy to share things that happen/affect me, but even some of those moments could be "questionable" in regards to those I work with.

I've toyed with keeping a semi-detailed journal of some of my most memorable audition experiences, but I'd feel VERY uncomfortable ever putting them into print.  Some of those "incidents" are very specific, and, god forbid, that that person ends up reading about him/herself on-line, in a book, etc.  Heck, even my ego can be very fragile when it comes to my "art", and for actors I believe it's even moreso.

Anecdotes are fine.  Day-to-day happenings... Hmm...

As for Sweeney Todd...

I totally go "it".  This was the first time I felt truly frightened by what was going on on stage.  -And the factory whistle blow is quite "shocking" and near-ear-splitting too.

All in all, the whole enterprise was carried off very well.  There were a few moments where I missed some "bigness", but there were plenty of other moments where the intimacy of the production just really worked.

The rest of the audience seemed to get it tonight too.  I did hear a few "whispers" during intermission and after the show, and I saw a few empty seats once the second act started.  -Actually, half of the row in front of me - the sixth row - left at intermission.   Unfortunately, they were placed by two women, one of whom decided to eat a very crinkly bag of Whoppers and drink from a very crinkly water bottle for the first 15 minutes of Act 2.  Almost everyone around her was sending daggers her way... She just continued to smile and crinkle away... And whisper things to her companion.  UGH!  But...

I really enjoyed the show.  I can see where the Sweeney purists would take issue with the production - which would be all of it - and all I want to say to them is, "Get over it!"  This is not your Father's Sweeney Todd.  Enjoy the innovation, and be thankful, that someone has chosen not to simply ape Hal Prince's original Broadway production.  If you want to see a reasonable facsimile of that, then just stay home and watch the DVD.

...And from a musical standpoint, it was neat hearing where certain passages were edited, and how certain songs were transposed up or down.  -And I have to wonder if some of the transpositions were needed in order to avoid some difficult key (signatures) for the actor/instrumentalists.

And as DR Jason indicated earlier, Lestat will be based on the first two books of Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles - "Interview With The Vampire" and "The Vampire Lestat".   And since "The Vampire Lestat" actually comes first chronologically in the series - even though it was published second - that is the order we'll be taking things.  Undoubtedly, due to the time span covered in both books, there has been a lot of judicious editing done.  -There's enough material in just one of the books to make many musicals.  But the musical will begin in the late 1700s, and come up to the present day.

I just watched part of the Ann Rice interview with Charlie Rose and they didn't mention the show at all.  She just wrote a book about the life of Jesus Christ, but from Jesus' perspective...like an autobiography.  She said that the book (the first of a possible four...well, I think she said that if she were to do it properly, it would be in four volumes), takes it up to his eighth birthday.  Sounds interesting.
