Well, you've read The Late, Late Notes, you probably read them in the wee hours of the morning, and now it is time for you to post until The Late, Late Cows come home.

Good morning, all!  I have a doctor's appointment this morning at 11:00, a lot of housecleaning, and I need to do a bit of shopping.  All in all, I think the day will fly by.  Beyond that, I have nothing more to add so I'll jump to the TOD:

As a high school student, I joined the Columbia Record Club so a lot of my earliest record purchases were Columbia and its other labels like Epic.  I loved the Philadelphia Symphony, and one of my earliest recordings was the relatively unknown (at that time) CARMINA BURANA with Harve Presnell as the baritone soloist.

I also liked RCA, mainly because they too had cast albums and the Chicago Symphony, not to mention great conductors like Pierre Monteaux and Fritz Reiner.  I always thought London Records were second-rate because their classical albums had the tackiest covers.  At that time, I only bought their Gilbert and Sullivan recordings because I looked so scornfully at their poor artistic choices in marketing.  Now I find those covers hysterically outrageous.   Thank God I have a mind to change.

Oh, my will it be a slow day at HHW?

It's 7:59am and I'm the third post. I won't be posting much today since at 11:30 I'm checking out. I'll be on a train to Long Island and since I don't have a laptop with wireless internet I won't be posting on the train. I will be picked up by my husband at the train station and we will do some last minute shopping. We will have dinner, I will play with MacGregor and we will visit a dear friend. I'll pop in when I can but I don't promise much today or this weekend.

I've replaced the printer ribbon on the line printer so that (at least for a while) the computer printouts will be legible. Hope someone remembers to do that while I'm gone.

My Scenic Melbourne 2005 Calendar will be taken down from my office cubicle wall. Thanks Tom for the great images.

For Jane (and those others who don't want turkey tomorrow)   :D

Hello, Dear Friend Larry. Hope you enjoy tomorrow and that you get a chance to go to Fred and Skip's. We will raise a glass to our HHW friends tomorrow on Long Island.

Sorry to have been so E&T lately.  What with it being Thanksgiving week, we're quite busy at the store.  It's amazing how many people think Thanksgiving is all about the food.  Oh, wait...it really is all about the food.

One of the promotions we've had is the "Gimme 10" coupons.  Customers earned the coupons by buying a certain amount of groceries over a certain time period.  They can then use the coupons to get ten percent off any bill, and can use the coupons together to get 20%, 30%...up to 50% off.

Yesterday, I had a couple at my register, who had something like five grocery carts filled with groceries.  Their total bill ran to over $1300.  And yep, they had five of those "Gimme 10"s.  I had two other checkers helping with the bagging of all that booty.  And we were all getting off on the rush of that sale.

Off to work again: today is the really big day, the day before all those turkeys get roasted/fried/grilled/whatevered.  And I'm working tomorrow, as well; it'll be fun to see what sorts of stuff people need to pick up at the last minute.

TOD:

As a youngen, record labels didn't mean much to me aside from a quick visual reference to recognize and sort from a bunch a records I might have had laying on the floor around the record player.  I wasn't concerned with labels until my teens when I started collecting cast recordings and I came to realize that Columbia put out the best recordings and packaging.  Even today, I give little thought about labels.  The exceptions being Sony and it's stupid malware (BTW, thanks for posing the link to how to return these CDs, DR Ben!)  and of course, Kritzerland--remember, if it says "Kritzerland" on the cover, you can be assured of the fine quality and endurance that makes a recording a pleasurable listening experience.

As far as favorite record label graphics go, I always liked the jazzy Atlantic label with it's huge A that looked cool as it spun round and round.

Title: Re:THE LATE, LATE NOTES
Post by: Ben on November 23, 2005, 06:25:12 AM
Like Dan, I didn't pay much attention to labels. I knew that Columbia made many of the cast recordings but besides that I never bought, or didn't buy, a record because of a label.

Now, with rare exceptions like Kritzerland (http://www.kritzerland.com/), most labels are part of bigger conglomerates anyway. That's why I was surprised when I looked at the Bette Midler Peggy Lee CD to find out it was one of the malware infected products. The CD says COLUMBIA all over. It's only when you turn the case over and look at the bottom back do you see the warning about copy protection and in very small print you see SONY/BMG.

I remember the Atlantic label from my 45 of Mr. Manilow's "Copacabana." Only the label was red and green, I think - not yellow. Barry was on the Atlantic label, wasn't he? Or am I imagining that? I dunno - I only had a brief encounter with LPs. Cassettes and CDs are really the media of my generation.

I enjoy the RCA logo. You know the one - the dog in front of the gramophone...?

The sky is absolutely as clear as can be today, but it's pretty cold. 28 degrees according to AOL. If it's like this tomorrow, I will most definitely be at the Zoo. I don't mind the cold. I just don't want it to rain!

Comments on last night's AMAZING RACE.

I was a bit disappointed that they stayed in the US last night. There were a few more places that i'd heard they went, and for some reason I thought it would be last night. I was also upset that it was a non-elim. I wasn't sure it would be one, and I really wanted the weavers to go.

I am not too happy that the others teams are so mean to the weavers. However they annoy me.  Especially how they say they are so moral and christian, yet they constantly put down the other teams and are quite mean.

Does anyone know when the season finale is?

Good morning!

I'm on earlier than usual because I had to get up earlier than usual to go to the dentist for check up and cleaning. Thankfully, all was AOK.

It is beautifully sunny outside but very cold and not supposed to warm up much today. Tomorrow is supposed to be at least ten degrees warmer.

Last night's AMAZING RACE

[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]*********  SPOILER ALERT  *********  SPOILER ALERT  *********  SPOILER ALERT  *********  SPOILER ALERT  *********  SPOILER ALERT  *********  SPOILER ALERT  *********  SPOILER ALERT  *********  SPOILER ALERT  *********  [/move]

First of all, I have to say that preempting this show last week kind of lessened my interest in this race.  I almost forgot that it was on.  If it weren't for the Tivo recording light going on, I would have not watched it (*ahem!*) live.  But watch it I did and it didn't take long to invoke my involvement.

Of course, there was more driving, driving, driving, driving, driving, driving, driving, driving--but I'm used to that now.

I now want a bear!  I wonder how hard they are to housebreak?  Do you need to live near the woods?

The challenges weren't that difficult at all.  The helicopter ride to the top of the mesa was visually interesting, but really only acted as a bottleneck and felt like filler.  I liked the repelling down the cliffs, but the way they filmed it really didn't convey how it felt for any of the contestants except for the Linz sister.

And speaking of the Linz family--Hoo and Ray for them!  Finally coming in first!  I actually applauded and hooted when I saw that!

And I spit on the ground to curse the luck those Weavers had at the last minute.  And Gawd!  What is the matter with those people!  Don't they watch the dailies to see how they're acting?

And I still can't tell the Branson girls apart (one is very cute, but she still manages to merge with the other two when they are all in the same shot.)  And the Goldwolski's are also a muddle, though I can now pick out the big boned sister from the talky one.

When I got in from the dentist, I flipped on the TV and DVR to see what had recorded yesterday (other than last night's prime time programs) that I had forgotten I had programmed:

THE IPCRESS FILE. Looking forward to seeing it sometime over the long holiday weekend. It's been decades since I've seen it even though the DVD was released some years ago. I never got it.

While I was checking out the DVR, I noticed that TCM was playing the Marx Bros.' ANIMAL CRACKERS, so naturally I had to stop and watch it to the end even though I have the film on DVD (two different copies, as a matter of fact.)

Always hilarious.

I, too, loved Columbia recordings. They always seemed to have the most vibrant stereo sound. RCA was fine, too.

I never much cared for Capitol cast albums. THE MUSIC MAN was the first stereo record on Capitol I ever had, and I always thought it sounded echoy and hollow. Other Capitol sets like GOLDEN BOY and FORUM were better, but never seem to match the thrilling sound on Columbia cast recordings.

(And, of course, we can never forgive Capitol for FOLLIES.)

I did not get any packages yesterday but am slated to get some DVDs today, and the Streisand TV-set should arrive Friday. Though I will have to pop into the grocery store on Friday to pick up a couple of things, it looks like I'm going to be camping out in front of my TV for the long holiday weekend.

Hooray!

I just popped over to DVD Verdict to see the list of DVD releases for next week, and I am THRILLED to say that there is not one thing coming out next week that I considered buying. (Well, CSI's 5th season I would like, but no way I'd pay anything CLOSE to what they're asking for it.)

That suits me fine since I WAY overspent this week and could use a break of a few weeks from buying anything.

I've been playing with Google Book Search this morning and found that there seems to be a few glitches in the system.  I did a search on "Goddard Lieberson" and this link  (http://books.google.com/books?hl=en&id=xP6UkiBSWb0C&pg=PA206&lpg=PA206&dq=%22goddard+lieberson%22&prev=http://books.google.com/books%3Flr%3D%26q%3D%2522goddard%2Blieberson%2522&sig=dCdiKQM4MrXhEwbDDlR11GPqS5A) came up as part of the results set.

You will need a Google account to see the entire book excerpt, but you can still see the rather bizarre page that returns.

Gawd only know what would have come up if I searched on Joshua Logan.

I had a lot of Columbia 45's - Beatles and Beach Boys - the yellow and orange label...pretty cool.

I also like the Mercury black/red label with the little guy in the hat!

Motown was interesting.

I loved the Buena Vista albums - a rainbow type effect, although the 45's were all black with silver printing.

KAPP was interesting.

Columbia of course had that gray Cast Album label, although the red/black "eye" label was interesting.  Columbia had great Stereo as well.

Buena Vista had some good stereo on some of Annette's albums.  I think the stereo on the KAPP albums and the Warner Bros albums was great, too.  The Everly Bros albums for Warner Bros in the 1960's always sounded almost "live" in stereo!

My favorite album - soundtrack - was ROME ADVENTURE on the WB label in fabulous stereo with an orchestra and bells and AL DI LA.  I still have it and play it now and then.

Wow!  I heard a great story about Mr Conried when he was doing summer stock at the old Avondale here in Indiana....and I think DR CP has told a similar story.  When he found out that he was being provided a meal between the two shows on Saturday but the rest of the cast was NOT - he bought pizza for everybody!

Are you an official member yet? If so, I think you get a pass (or more than one) for the arial tram that runs from one end of the zoo to the other. You can always get into a car and escape the rain AND get a birds eye view of your new sanctuary.

I'm up, I'm up - well five-and-a-half hours is better than no hours of beauty rest.

I always loved WB records - loved the GOLD stereo label on the LP itself (gray for mono, I think).  And Mercury had great-sounding classical LPs (now highly sought after and very pricey).  I always liked Roulette, too.

The Ipcress File region 1 DVD is quite rare now and fetches lots of dough.  There is a new 2-DVD set coming from region 2 in January.

There is an absolutely hysterically funny bad review of RENT today in the LA TIMES.  I now actually may see the film because it sounds so wretchedly bad and pretentious that it might be funny.

I bought my records because of the artists, not the record labels...but I remember both the Roulette and Liberty labels as being distinctive.  Anyone remember the Okeh label on 78s?

A THEATRE STORY TO GIVE THANKS FOR ON TURKEY DAY!

British actor Richard Griffith is performing in a play, Heroes, at Wyndhams Theatre in London.  At a Saturday Matinee, after a woman's cell phone rang for the third time in the play (this time during a penultimate scene in the play), Griffith broke character, stepped down to the apron, and addressed her: "Is your f**king cell phone going to ring one more time or could I finish the play.  There are 750 people sitting here and if  I were them, I'd sue you for spoiling their afternoon.  In fact, why don't you leave the theatre now.  F**k off!"

He brought down the house, getting a standing ovation.  The offender left.

Rejoice a blow has been struck for a return to decorum and good manners in the theatre.  Shame the entitled, rude bastards and then throw 'em out of the theatre!   Bravo, Mr. Griffith!

Gabe just did a book report on The Penultimate Peril wherein he quite accurately defined penultimate.  :)

Labels:  Well BK may remember this, since we have discussed it privately, but I was an A&M addict growing up mostly because of Sergio Mendes.  A&M (and its licensee, CTI) always had the coolest artists, IMHO, including BK's close personal friend David's father, Julius Wechter.

And we of course have BK (among others too numerous to mention) to thank for the splendid 2CD release of Cleopatra.  How Alex North didn't win an Oscar for that score is beyond me.

That was the circa 70s label, which had the very funny insert sleeves with an "RCA"-looking dog with its ears cocked (no mean feat, LOL) looking at LPs flying in through the windows.  The "classic" A&M label was of course the ochre (this color has been discussed ad nauseum on the A&M Board I frequent, believe it or don't) with the trumpet underneath the red A&M letters.

Hi all, I'm here at work. Just me....literally. Well, the temp secretary will be back after lunch, but it's really quiet today as most people are already gone. I like it.   I decided to work today and take Monday off.  I hate the craziness of the Monday after a holiday so this works out great.   We can close the office at 4:00pm today, so that's ok.

So today, Paul is supposed to finish his latest mural. I'll post a photo later. It's 3 stories on the side of a factory and is a cutaway of the factory in the 40s making tank parts for WWII.  It's pretty cool.  Anyway, the weather is getting really cold so he HAS to finish today. So I'll probably go celebrate with him a little after work

Good Afternoon!

;)

In any case...

I tried to post last night, but the cable and internet connection at home was spotty again - but at least the cable company called in advance to say they would be doing some work on the line last night.  -I just had to wonder why they had to do the work during prime internet use time.

OK - Gotta run...  Lunch is almost over...

But I'm here...

Tomorrow morning the cats and I are driving to my parents' house (about 2 1/2 hours away). I figure the traffic will be ok early in the morning and I hate to drive on 2 lane roads at night. The lights really bother me.  I'll probably be there until Sunday. This trip keeps getting longer and changing, but that's cool.  There's only dial-up at my parents house and the computer is in my dad's bedroom.  My laptop died (I'm getting a new one - I've had it with this one).  So the bottom line is I won't be online much.

TOTD:  Roulette and Coral were my favourite labels for 45 rpm recordings.

Columbia was issued here as "Coronet" .

Coral Records had Buddy Hollyand also the McGuire sisters.

Roulette had Jimmie Rodgers and The Playmates.

RCA I associated with Perry Como and Elvis Presley.

Coronet was Johnny Mathis, Guy Mitchall, Percy Fiath etc. (Columbia).

Columbia was a label here used for some UK releases - Cliff Richard and The Shadows were on Columbia. An EMI label in this country.

DR TOMovOZ - I loved the Coral Records, too.  Lovely shade of coral!  Buddy Holly and the McGuire Sisters were on Coral.

The only record labels that I noticed when growing up were Casablanca (because of Donna Summer and the soundtrack to "Thank God It's Friday") and Atlantic, because of The Manhattan Transfer and Bette Midler.

Other than that, I only paid attention to the record label when I discovered "Unsung Sondheim" and all of the musical theater recordings produced there.  That actually made me pay attention more to the producer of the recordings and not the label(s) where that particular producer worked.  And we all know who that producer is. ;)

One of the specials for today was a pasta dish -- Orzo (an Italian rice) with a topping of sauteed Italian sausage, cherry tomatoes, asparagus, arugala and mushrooms all prepared with a garlic olive oil base.

The taste was indescribably scrumptious.

Evening all!  I wanted wish everyone safe travels who are on the road to their loved ones.

I've been so tired this week.  It's taken everything I have just to make it though the work day.

I have lots to do tomorrow and I sure am looking forward to that stuffing!   ;D

Tonight's supper will be leftover pot roast...served up as a sandwich on white bread with mustard.

I might treat myself to a little cabbage on the side.

My pork loin has been out of the freezer (but in the refrigerator) since yesterday afternoon, and it's still solid.

Sigh.

AN ODE TO THE THANKSGIVING TURKEY

The turkey shot out of the oven,
And rocketed into the air.
It knocked every plate off the table,
And partly demolished a chair.

It ricocheted into a corner,
And burst with a deafening boom.
Then splattered all over the kitchen,
Completely obscuring the room.

It stuck to the walls and the windows.
It totally coated the floor.
There was turkey attached to the ceiling,
Where there'd never been turkey before.

It blanketed every appliance.
It smeared every saucer and bowl.
There wasn't a way I could stop it.
That turkey was out of control!

I scraped and I scrubbed with displeasure,
And thought with chagrin as I mopped,
That I'd never again stuff a turkey
With popcorn that hadn't been popped.

Thanksgiving Eve greetings!  It's been a busy day here - we have 2 tables in our dining room now - one set for 6 and one for 8.  I keep thinking I'm forgetting to cook something, but really all we have to do is get the stuffed turkey in the oven about 8:15 tomorrow morning and enjoy the Broadway show excerpts before the Macy's parade.  We've already made the pumpkin and pecan pies and bought 2 kinds of cranberry sauce; I'll make the gravy right before we eat.  The side dishes are arriving with our guests:

My mother - Green beans, apple pie
Richard's mother - Candied sweet potatoes, cranberry jello salad
Richard's older brother - Rolls, relishes
Richard's younger brother - Corn souffle
My aunt - White wine, pink wine

Whew!  I'm ready for Friday.

I took the kids to see Chicken Little today.  The boys loved it; I found it ho-hum from a story perspective, but quite fetching from a visual/design one.  One truly LOL moment (for me, anyway--the rest of the audience didn't get the reference) dealing with a Streisand record collection, but it just struck me that most of the time they were trying way too hard to be hip/self-referential in that Pixar sort of way, with none of the nuance that Pixar seems to come by naturally.

INVASION had another excellent and creepy episode. Its audience has certainly shrunk from its premiere numbers. I think some viewers have gotten impatient with its slowly unfolding story, but I don't find it slow. Rather, I find it incredibly detailed and nuanced.

LOST and INVASION make a terrific one-two punch of suspense and character mystery that are pretty hard to top.

I don't mean to pour cold water, but in case you hadn't read, the overnight ratings on Tuesday night for THRESHOLD in its new time slot were the lowest it has scored. Hmmm... I have Classic Arts TV on right now...

They're showing the finale from Strauss' Cappricio with Renee Fleming - some sort of film adaptation of an actual performance.  Sort of strange, and Ms. Fleming is being, well... Ms. Fleming.  Sometimes she's just a bit too too much for me.  Even here "diva-ness" seems a bit pre-meditated at times.  Ah, well...

However, earlier, there was a clip of Aldo Ciccolini playing Debussy's "La plus que lente" - which is one of my all-time favorite pianos pieces - both to listen to and to play.  When I saw the kyron(sp?) giving the information about which clip was next, I was a little apprehensive - Aldo Ciccolini is truly one of the fastest piano players on record, and sometimes he just plays things too fast (at least for my taste - however, his recordings of the Saint-Saens Piano Concerti are at times breath-taking!).  Well, as soon as the clip started playing, I was pleasantly surprised and pleased with the tempo and pace of his performance.   ...And then a few minutes later, Ms. Fleming was doing her thing...

In any case...

Hmm... Unless I skipped over a post or two...

On the way back from home from the movie, there was a report on the radio that ABC has decided to make this season of "Alias" the final season.  It was sort of funny, one report used the wording, "has decided to bring to show to a close", while another report a couple of minutes later said that ABC that the show was "cancelled".  Ah, the joy of spin!  -However, it appears that ABC has promised to have the show go out with the proverbial bang.  We shall see...  Well, you guys will see since I don't watch the show.  ;)

"Rent" Comments Coming Up...

All I will say about "Rent" (the movie) is that Christopher Columbus did a respectable job of bringing the stage movie to the big screen.  However, it was too respectable.  And way too literal!  The "Living in America" sequence actually elicited a few giggles from members of the audience - including myself.

I finally caught up on some of the reviews, and the Washington Post reviewer had the same observations.  And he made a great comment on how film-makers are too afraid of "musicals" since they don't reflect "reality"...

"Like so many people who have made a hash of musicals on stage and screen for a generation, Columbus and his team are deeply ambivalent about this whole singing and dancing thing; it's just not natural, and movies, well, they're so unavoidably realistic.  (What a fallacy: They're both dream factories.)

However, it was great fun spotting a bunch of people I knew in the background and in some of the bit parts.  -Especially Wayne Wilcox in the support group sequences.  (What a cutie!)  :)

And as for where I was on November 22, 1963...

Well, I did not enter this world until 1968, so... However, on November 22, 1985, I came out of the closet.  Timothy Doyle was the first person I told.  -And I need to touch base with him again, it's been way too long since we've seen each other.

WOW!  20 years!  In some ways, that doesn't really feel like that much time has passed.  In other ways, well... Let's just say there were a few "slow" years in there.

;)

DR Ron Pulliam - I love orzo!  I first came across it in Greek restaurants - some avgolemono soup recipes call for it instead of rice - both, however, are considered "traditional".  -I prefer my avgolemono with orzo.  It's a great rice-shaped pasta.  Great for pasta salads too!  My favorite way to prepare it is to brown a portion of in some olive oil, then add in some "fresh" orzo, add water and cook it until it's done.  You end up with this wonderful side dish, "grains" of white and brown.  A couple of companies also make a tri-color orzo - red, green and orange (beet, spinach and carrot colored).

Back from a verrrry long day.  Despite having had four people out tonight (traveling for Thanksgiving), and despite having to put in the new guy, rehearsal went very, very well, and everyone is really starting to get the two big numbers in their bodies and minds.  Even the teachers' number started to come together, and if they really spend the weekend listening to their tape and going over everything in their heads, I think they'll get it all.  Today we really broke the number down into tiny sections, and I gave the clues as to how to get from one thing to the next - to always be one step ahead in their heads, so that they're not thinking of the next bit at the moment they're supposed to be doing the next bit.  It's really alien to all of them, but today I think it all finally started to sink in.  The joy of the number is that even if they screw up it's still funny.  But it's REALLY funny when they're sharp.
Title: Re:THE LATE, LATE NOTES

As for the change in singing styles...

I'm with DR Jason on this one...  It's the whole evolution of popular music in general.  -Remember when "show music" actually was "pop(ular) music"?  All things change, like it or not, and you can like it... or not.  Yes, microphones - and myself ;) - can be blamed for a contributing to the "problem", but as long as "we" continue to "not go" to a show just because we think we may not like it, well...  Then that truly will be the death of musical theatre.  If there's no audience to play to...

Heck, even operatic performance standards have changed over the past 50 years - even over the past 20-30 years.  Yes, there are still some admirers of the "stand and sing" school, but most of today's audiences want to sense some "acting", some real emotion - not just painted on tears and worry lines.

And I believe DR Jason and I were both very surprised at how much we "got" and liked Michael John LaChiusa's newest, See What I Wanna See.  And it actually demands a couple of different vocal styles from it's performers: everything from a jazzy-cabaret performance to some quasi-operatic singing to gentle ballad delivery.

Well...  I could ramble on and on... And I sort of have already, so...

Next!

As for record labels...

I remember Atlantic ("Le Freak" - at least, I seem to recall Le Chic on that label), Polydor ("Reunited", Peaches & Herb), Chrysalis ("Heart of Glass", Blondie) and, of course, K-tel ("Mellow Gold", among others).

I recognized Columbia (now Sony) early on as the one to look for for all the good cast recordings.  Then came RCA (now BMG/etc.) due to most of the Sondheim canon.  Classically, there were the big three under the Universal umbrella (London/Decca, Philips and Deutsche Gramaphon (that yellow banner is a true classic)), and Angel/EMI - all those opera sets!

DR Joy commented on her experience when she asked an actor about his height, well...

I know some actors who are defensive about their height because they are tall.  Because to some eyes, they're too tall.  6'1" seems to be acceptable, 6'2" sometimes, but 6'3" and 6'4" can actually be a kiss of death for some actors.  I know actors who are that tall, and they actually lie on their resume and say they're shorter.  Even in the modeling world, being "too" tall can be plus rather than a minus.

And then there are those actors who feel they are too "average" being 5'6"-5'8".

I went to Costco today (that's where I got the pecan pie) and they were selling their cheesecakes for $5.00!  Normally, they're $11.95 and Costco never has "sales," just coupons...and I've never seen a coupon for any of their foodstuffs.  But a co-worker was there at the same time and she said that they're only $5 because they made too many and have to get rid of them.  I don't know if that's true or not (it's certainly plausible) but I got two of them and they're now in my freezer!  Score! ;D
