Title: CRITIQUING THE CRITICS

Well, you've read the notes, you've critiqued the notes, the notes have critiqued you, and now it is time for you to post until the critical cows come home.

I've only been involved in local community theater and have been in shows that have received really bad reviews but where the audiences loved it.  Like they say, "Success is the best revenge!" ;)

In my CD player (at work):  I finally found my brand new CDs that I received last week and put my car keys on top of them so that I can't forget to bring them to work:  Lionel Bart's Blitz and Jason Robert Brown's solo CD, "Wearing Someone Else's Clothes."  After that will be the original Off-Broadway cast recording of Dessa Rose by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, with La Chanze and Rachel York.  Beautiful!  I listened to it yesterday and I loved it.

A sampling from the Tolucan Times review:

"In its world premiere, this cleverly suspenseful thriller is a delicious and delightful little whodunit.  Written from some darkly deceitful corner of the mind of the otherwise most pleasant Bruce Kimmel, it kept us guessing from start to finish...  Kimmel, also donning the director's hat, inspires sassy and supenseful performances from his cast... This is a nice, neat, naughty and entertaining murder mystery, well-acted and developed throughout... To find out for yourselves whodunit and to whom, catch this one!"

In my DVD player:  three DVDs from Netflix that I can't remember.  I've had them all for several weeks and haven't found taken the time to watch them.  I don't know why.  I've had two three-day weekends in this month already!

This morning is Garbage Day.  Last week, I totally forgot to put out the garbage.  Dopey me. ;) Anyway, I remembered last last night and it's out on the edge of the street, but it's also Recycle Day.  I haven't forgotten, but I haven't put it out yet because it's raining and will probably rain all night.  I don't have anything to keep the paper dry, so I want to put it out at the last possible moment before I go to work...if I don't forget, too. :P

Good morning, all!  Today is cleanup from yesterday's flood.  Toyland has to wait till tomorrow (a Jerome Kern reference).  I do have to run the Kelli O'Hara chart to Chelsea Music, but that's on hold till I hear about what's happening in the building today with yesterday's events.

Dear Friend BK, everyone's a critic and everyone's got an opinion, as you encourage all of us to do and as I see on every other board I look in on.  The web has created a lot of Frankensteins, but even before the web, I was amazed at how many mediocre critics flooded the New York media, especially in smaller newspapers.  The music critic for the late New York Native would present as his review a listing of the musical program with little to no criticism.  I never once got a bad review on a New York City Gay Men's Chorus concert because he never offered one.  While I certainly didn't want a bad review, I just wanted a review:  I know when my work stinks, and sometimes a negative review can teach you a thing or two besides humility or why the phone never rings.  In ACT ONE, when "Oonce In a Lifetime" closed in tryouts, a stagehand's criticism "I wish the show weren't so noisy" gave Moss Hart the idea of how to rewrite and fix Act Two.

As to your play DECEIT, it's popular theatre and not "serious drama," and you have to be punished.  However, if a critic only wants to review Brecht and Beckett, he'd better know them really well.

TOD:
CD:  Mrs Henderson Presents, Guy Haines, Babes in Toyland
DVD:  Swimming With Sharks, Die Meistersinger (Met broadcast)
  VHS:  el cheapo porno

Good morning Larry and Dan.

I'm trying to finish a project that can't be finished by deadline because I was out for two days on Jury Duty. Nonetheless I will still listen to something, perhaps AccuRadio or some of the missed BBC broadcasts. I will open the bottom drawer in my desk and see which delights await me.

We have a busy weekend with a gathering in Elizabeth, NJ tomorrow afternoon and dinner with a friend to thank us for helping with the Gift Baskets in December. We may watch something tonight but there are no plans right now.

Another picture. Here I am standing on the area next to the Liffey River. It's the north side of the river. Notice the trees and the blooms. It's December 26th and there is a lot of greenery. We had one day of rain during our trip and for almost the entire 14 days we had temperatures between 45 and 60 degrees. It was wonderful for a winter vacation.

I have no time to catch up.  Again.

CD player, car: That stack of CDs we didn't buy Alex: collected good stuff by Genesis, Phil Collins, Paul McCartney, and Chicago, the soundtrack to Shrek, and a new disc by Kenny Loggins (dating from a couple years back, not on Columbia) that has some interesting stuff on it.  But the photos prove that he should never have let his second wife convince him to shave off his beard - he's growing it back, but it looks scraggly.  Pooh.

DVD player: Der Grampa is taking Robots and Oliver with us for our ladsitting today.  I am not an Oliver fan.  Horseracing.

Finally, in the spirit of our esteemed BK's comments about audience reaction compared to paid critics, I suggest everyone check the comments posted at the LA Times On-Line (http://www.calendarlive.com/stage/305102,0,2848556,reviews.event).

There is the possibility, of course, that the paid critics aren't being paid by the right people.  Our BK needs to check with his producers on this.

It looks like ABC is putting on another 1 hour results show for DANCING WITH THE STARS.

Also (and i had no idea they were doing this) it seems like FOX has moved SKATING WITH CELEBS to mondays at 8pm (before 24). This is its regular timeslot.

Apparently the show has no audience voting.  And it has already been filmed.  And (I find this weird) it's being shown sunday nights at 10pm in canada.

As predicted, the Daily News is also a complete pan - that makes us 100% bad reviews with all the major press.  I guess we oughta close the show, only there's this pesky thing, the audience, who seem to be enjoying themselves tremendously.  Oh, well.

DR Jose I have also been trying to track down the reviews. If anyone finds them can you please post the links.  I prefer to read the entire reviews as opposed to just reading snippets.

Oh btw the review that BK mentioned at reviewplays.com gives away everything.  The reviewer really likes the play.  But my gosh what a terrible way to review something.  HE wrote it like he was writing for one of those spoiler review sites (where you give everything away line by line!)

Oh btw2, there is an LAtimes.com site.

I hope so, too...just for you!

Still..."Wicked" was panned here (mostly mixed, though...with strong kudos for the leading ladies), and it was a sensational success with the audience.

There's a vast gulf between "Wicked" and "Lestat" when it comes to musicality and theatrical "wow," in my oipinion.  "Wicked" had it and "Lestat" falls way short.

But...what do I know?  I do know that "Wicked" got standing ovations both times I saw it.  Nobody stood for "Lestat"...except to leave the theater.

I hope they can save it.  I stick by my assessment of a long, long, tuneless and mercilessly expository first act.  It's gotta change and change soon.  And Lestat NEEDS a big number all his own.  Without both those things happening, I don't imagine many theatergoers will stick around for the rewards of the 2nd act.

He and his trio would play Blues Alley in Georgetown regularly during my high school and college years.  The intimate space was the perfect environment to hear his music... Live!  *Although the cover charge per set got to be prohibitive at times for the starving student.

And my piano teacher in college would perform the Sonata for Two Pianists (one jazz, one classical) with the head of the Jazz department.  Very sunny music.

I'm well-rested, but still feel out of sorts and disoriented.  Rather like being on the outside looking in....a casual observer of myself...and I'm much too critical of me, I find.

But maybe it's just the residual effects of whatever affliction I've been under.

Still a tad grumpy, I am.

For amusement sake, I went back to the Daily News site and searched the musical I alluded to in today's notes, the one that LA critics fell all over themselves to praise to the skies (despite the fact that the show was one of the most critically-reviled musicals of its season in NY) - guess what?  This same critic LOVED IT - it was THE BEST - it was GREAT.  I feel better now.

Critical success or lack thereof in New York or L.A. certainly doesn't mean the same will happen in the other place, as everyone is saying.  Compare the reception of DOUBT in California to its reception in New York.  But more recently, you can look at THE WILD PARTY and SMELL OF THE KILL, both big critical failures in NY, but getting nice press in L.A.  (I think the L.A. Times said that SMELL OF THE KILL bristles with dark wit or something like that, while it failed completely in NY.)

Maybe we should do a quote ad with all bad quotes!

One of my favorite lines pointed out to me (can't remember WHICH pan, there are so many) was that one of our actors was "miscast and misused".  Say what?  If you're miscast how can you be misused?  Conversely, if you're misused how can you be miscast.  I understand if someone is miscast.  I understand if someone is misused, but to be both miscast and misused - now THAT is a triumph!

FJL: Exactly.  The LA critics love to praise anything that completely failed in NY.  In the case of La Chiusa's Wild Party, that was one of the worst-reviewed shows ever, and I saw it and am here to tell you it was one of the most excruciating evenings of theater I've ever seen.  The fact that it got unanimous raves in LA for a waiver theater production directed by a not very talented person, well, I rest my case.  I said it earlier - had we gotten raves from these yokels I would be worried about my play.  It's much better we got this reaction if we're seriously trying to get to NY.  I'll give another example of why I feel this way - Accomplice, Rupert Holmes' very entertaining but completely convoluted play, got unabashed raves across the board from every major critic - it was the best, the greatest and NY was in for a treat for this show that started in LA.  Well, it came in to NY all right.  I happened to be there the night after it opened and went to go see it.  Only it wasn't playing because it had already closed - after one performance and horrible reviews.

I just came back from Chelsea Music, the music prep house copying my score for Monday's recording.  Chelsea did the music prep on LESTAT, and we talked about the orchestrations for LESTAT, which Paul says are quite good and intelligently planned for the fact it's got 3 keyboards.  WICKED in the theatre  sounds like there are only 3 keyboards, all cheesy,  playing it.

Whatever shortcomings the NY house orchestra has are in no way what was heard at the Curran Theater -- the music for "Wicked" sounded glorious!

As for Paul's assessment of "Lestat's" orchestrations, that score needs every advantage it can get, at present.

If you saw WICKED before it opened in New York, you heard the original orchestrations.  Mr Schwartz supervised a lot of reworking by keyboard men in New York.

For what it's worth, the cast album doesn't sound nearly as good as it sounded here live.  I figured that went with the territory, though.

Natural gas is not the cheap alternative any more.  Natural gas prices are soaring and will only get higher.

Electric is the cheapest energy source out there.

RE: the LA Daily News review.

When I started to read it I was very impressed.  The reviewer started off writing very well and made a point to say how he didn't think it was right to spoil the show. And he was wondering how he was going to write a review without spoiling things for people.

I was actually thinking that even though he didn't like the play, that he was most likely going to say it in a very kind and well thought out way.

Not.

After the first few lines, he started to get obnoxious.  He gave away plot points left and right (well guising them in little bullet points).

I could actually admire someone who can thoughtfully say why they don't like something, while being kind.  But this guy went and basically did everything he said he wasn't going to do (spill the plot points).

But I will say one more thing.  BK, re: shows like The Wild Party.  It might not have gotten great reviews in NY.  But there were many people who really liked it.  There are plenty of really bad shows that are completely incoherent, and this surely was not one of them.  So I don't think it was a bad thing for it to get raves in LA.  Just because you did not care for it, does not mean it was bad.

Good day one and all!!!

BK, let those who love the play spread the word and let the idiotic critics sit in their doo doo pile happily!

The director is going to allow another guy to take the role but he has his work cut off for showtime is the end of March.  Should be interesting to say the least....

What is in my stuff right now....

Lets see:

In my car I have Best of the Eagles.

Right now in my CD player I have five CD's lined up to play: Bond, Christina Ashford, James Galway and the Chieftains In Ireland, Lisa Lynne, and Van Morrison and Georgie Fame.....  I know an interesting mix!  :D

The tape deck has Faith Hill

DVD player has Mona Lisa Smile on the DVD side

Older VCR has a copy of Glenroe

Continued Broken leg vibes for the cast and crew of Deceit!!

Jennifer, there are people who like every show - it doesn't mean the show is good, it just means that some people like it.  The Lippa Wild Party, while hardly perfect, is much better than the La Chiusa.  And my point was that it was entirely predictable that the LA critics would embrace something the NY critics hated with a passion (and audiences, too - the show didn't run three weeks).  They loved it here because it's a pretentious show - they LOVE pretentious here.  And I've said it before - the reviews of The Drowsy Chaperone here made it seem like the show was the best musical since My Fair Lady.  If that same show went into NY with no changes, I'm sorry, they'd have a rude awakening.

I started my afternoon with last night's CSI. Excellent case involving a love triangle involving a mother, daughter, and the daughter's boy friend. A second case was tied in with Nick's kidnapping that closed last season. I didn't think this one was as well documented for the audience. I saw the brilliant kidnapping episode last season and I still had questions after watching last night's episode.

And try as I might, I couldn't shed a tear for the Smallville sheriff. She has operated on mmy last nerve for several seasons.

Good Afternoon!

Well... I ran for one hour straight.  -And, best of all, I didn't realize I had run an hour until I looked at my watch... At the end of the hour.

I started at the Jefferson Memorial... Up to the Lincoln Memorial... Around the Reflecting Pool... Past the Washington Monument... Along the Madison Street Side of The Mall... Turned around at the Capitol... Back down the other side of the Mall (Jefferson Street)... Took a left turn at the Washington Monument... And then back to the Jefferson Memorial...

Whew!

It was F-ing Amazing!  I hit that fabled runner's high as I was circling the Mall and knew that my finish line was in sight.  Needless to say, I was/am very proud of myself.  And I actually felt like I could have gone another half hour or so.

*My "rule" was that I was only going to look at my watch when I got to the point where I felt truly tired... Well...

:)

And distance-wise... I think I did about five and half miles... maybe even a little more than that since I took some detours along the way to check out some of the Memorials.

And now...

However, I am prepared to be a little achy tomorrow morning... But that is supposed to happen.  Or not.  We shall see.

If you saw WICKED before it opened in New York, you heard the original orchestrations.  Mr Schwartz supervised a lot of reworking by keyboard men in New York.

And the keyboard books for the tour were revised yet again... For the better, thankfully.

*I do have to say - and I'm not the only one who says this - that Bill Brohn keyboard parts are not so "pianistic".  The books for Ragtime when they're not playing the Stephen Flaherty's piano parts are quite "thick".

And the orchestrations for Lestat are being handled by Elton John's own "orchestrator", Guy Babylon with an assist by Steve Margoshes.  Guy has been the keyboard player for Elton John's band for many years.  From what I've seen, they're very well-written, "practical" parts.

Well, good news indeed!  Now will you and DR Ann thrown DR TCB in the trunk and head east?

Elmore I’m relieved, if it had to happen, the water overflow was contained to the bathroom.

Jose thank you.  It makes it easier having Craig so far away knowing he has a job which will hopefully be a good experience and look good on his resume.

MBarnum good money and heating vibes.

Ben I like the photo of you on climbing into the plane.  It looks like a new version of the “ladder” I exited off the Manx flight from the Isle of Man.

Bruce, congrats on the full house and great show.

DakotaCelt, we have been busy here, so busy I haven’t walked in two days (I almost always walk or hike).  I tried this morning, went out and spent the entire time discussing the repairs on our road (we had some flooding a couple of weeks ago).  I then introduced the road guy to our friend and, soon to be, neighbor.   He found her charming.  I told him he would like her.  Then she came back here to see our kitchen.

While not officially completed with the remodeling, we have been putting the kitchen and house back in order.  I’m lucky to be married to someone with such a flair for decorating.

I have dishes to wash-‘night

Is it still raining in Oregon, or did your streak end?

Our no-rain streak is still ongoing -- 105 or so days without rain.

Finished watching WAR OF THE  COLOSSAL BEAST, sequel to THE AMAZING COLOSSAL MAN starring Miss Sally Fraser who now, as Mrs. Sally Johnson, lives on a ranch in rural Idaho.

Fun movie. I remember the first time I saw this one...I was in the 2nd grade and was home sick. I was sitting at my little kiddie table in the family room eating a bowl of clam chowder. The white soup reminded me of the monsters bald head and made me nauseous. I can still remember that all these many years later! LOL!

I also noticed that the colossal man had worked out a bit between the first and last movie...and became about 10 years younger! LOL!

I will have to watch the other two movies on these AIP DVD sets...EARTH VS THE SPIDER and BLOOD OF DRACULA...which are two of my most favorite 1950s films!!

And I hope that they will soon be releasing more in this series!

Watched three episodes on the SUPERMAN - Season 2 DVD set. Unlike the first set in which I skipped some episodes, I will watch every one of these. This was my favorite season of the show - less violent than the first season but less silly than the later ones, and there are some good little mysteries.

The episodes looked fine apart from some minor speckling. Glad to have these sharp, clear copies of this classic series.

Meant to comment on your new furnace costs, DR MBarnum. I think I paid $3500 for mine back in 2000. It IS a lot of money, but think of it as an investment in your home. Plus., you can't live comfortably without it.

Sorry, DR JRand. I know how frustrating that can be.

Jack Larson looks really good in this season, too. The couple of years between the first and second season filming give him just the amount of maturity to make him very appealing. Also his hair wasn't as closely cropped as it is in the color shows.

I watched another CSI: MIAMI episode before IN JUSTICE came on.

This one had to do with the death of a woman whose husband and his brothers own an aluminum siding business that's being sued. As usual, the case is much more complicated than it first seems.

IN JUSRICE had a sweet case about an innocent teenager convicted of killing his sister. Jason O'Mara had his best performance yet as Conti, identifying very strongly with the angelic-faced teenager. My favorite episodes of the series thus far.

THE BOOK OF DANIEL also got more complicated tonight. I'm loving this show which has only three more episodes to air. The ratings have not been strong, and sponsors are almost non-existent, so I suspect the remaining shows are all of it we're going to get.

In addition to the other shows I listed on the DVR for Friday Media Check, add tonight's MONK episode and the Vin Diesel movie THE PACIFIER. Judging from the awful reviews it got, the Diesel movie will probably be junk, but I'll give it a try anyway.

Good Evening!

Good show tonight.  Good energy all around.

And while talking with one of the guys about my run today, after giving him my route, he guessed I probably covered something more like six miles, if not six and a half!

Hi!
No time to catch up. I logged in earlier and then ended up watching Dancing with the Stars and In Justice. I made it through the short week without getting sick again, so I am very happy about that.  I have much to do tomorrow, and I am very sleepy, so Good night.   Oh, Paul got all inspired and cancelled our movie this afternoon to paint.  That's cool. The sooner he finishes this mural, the sooner he can help me pack!   Anyway, we're planning on Brokeback Mountain tomorrow. He really wants to see it, so I waited.

I must rest. Night

watch Duck You Sucker (a sergio leone fim. It seemed to be the original uncut version with the Duck You Sucker end title eve though it is called Fistul  of Dynamite. It is my favorite Leone fil, I had not seen it in years, and it holds up very well. Surprising rated PG with all the violence and the word f""k said at least 10 times. Running time was 2hrs and 40 minutes. which makes it 2 minutes shy of the Italian restored version of 162 minutes. It repeats later this morning east and west coasts.

bk - I'm playing auditions tomorrow for a production of "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" and it's being directed by Evan Pappas. Do you have a message you'd like delivered or well wishes, etc?  Is it silly to have him sign my "Lucky Stiff" CD or the "My Favorite Year" vocal selections?

It's never silly to get these signed.  Some of my favorite things are things I've gotten signed at various sessions.

Say hello for me - don't know if he'll remember me or not - it was a long time ago.

Back from tonight's show and a little gathering afterwards at the Eclectic Cafe.  We had a little over half-a-house, not bad in the face of the merde that was shoveled our way this week - and all paid tickets, no freebs.  Tomorrow should be more full.   Tonight's audience wasn't terribly vocal but they seemed very taken with the show (except for the heavyset man sitting by himself in the back row - he came into the theater scowling, as if he'd just read every bad review, and apparently he'd taken them all to heart and prejudged the show - he sat there hating every minute of the first act and then left at intermission, which made me VERY happy indeed).   More in the notes, which I must now hurry and write.
