Title: IN SEARCH OF A BON MOT
Post by: bk on January 24, 2006, 12:17:00 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you are now in search of a bon mot, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're off searching for a bon moo.

That sounds like a name...does Tom Nob hobnob with the swells?  Has Tom Nob ever hobnobbed at the Hob Nob restaurant in Tacoma?

According to www.m-w.com, "Parsimonious (http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/parsimonious)" means:

Pronunciation: "pär-s&-'mO-nE-&s
Function: adjective
: exhibiting or marked by parsimony (http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/parsimony); especially : frugal to the point of stinginess
synonym see STINGY (http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/stingy)
- par·si·mo·ni·ous·ly adverb

First "Art house" film that sprang  to mind was "Elvira Madigan" which I still love.

I'm fond of several art house films from America, including two Frank Perry films, David and Lisa and Ladybug, Ladybug.

In the sixites it was difficult to distinguish between "Art House", "Foreign Language" and "Cheap Porn". . Perhaps it has not changed that much!

"I bought a copy of "David & Lisa" a couple of days ago. My memory of it is still strong - 40 years later! I hope I'm not disappointed.

"Death In Venice" was I guess an Art House film. It is still in my top 5 best films of all time. (One for Mahler!)

I'll have to think about what art house movies I may have possibly seen...and wait to see if anyone else posts movies that I've seen, then I can say, "Yes, I've seen that." ;)

Recent "Art House" films I enjoyed very much indeed were "The Motorcycle Diaries" and "The Chorus".
"March Of The Penguins", "Travelling Birds" and "Russian Ark" were also Art house  screenings here.
"A Mighty Wind" and "Howel's Moving Castle" were only shown in "Art House" cinemas here.
Hard line to call  between "limited release" and "Art house".

Good morning, all!  First of all, thank you for all the Taylor Nichols info last evening.  I never watched THE MIND OF THE MARRIED MAN, but I see in its IMDB listing that Jake Weber was also in the series.  I loved Taylor in THE BOILER ROOM.  I met him in the mid-1980s at a Christmas party of the RING OF FIRE producer.  Taylor briefly dated a friend of mine and DR Ginny's (O the gossip!), and we hung out a bit.  The dating ended when he went to Atlantic City to play Billy in an abridged edition of NO NO NANETTE and started dating another lady.  He did a play at Playwrights Horizons around 10 years ago, and that's the last time I've seen him.  I still remember how excited he was about the release of METROPOLITAN, which is rather like an "art house" American film.  And that brings us to the TOD:

Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown
What Have I Done to Deserve This?
Juliet of the Spirits
The Return of Martin Guerre
Smiles of a Summer Night
The Virgin Spring
Two Women
Pourquoi Pas?
La Ronde

I loved A MIGHTY WIND and every song in its score. They're all terrific, the best movie music I've heard in decades.

It can't hold a candle to BEST IN SHOW as a mockumentary, however. I like it even more than THIS IS SPINAL TAP or WAITING FOR GUFFMAN, both of which are also brilliant.

I watched a film called TOWER OF EVIL last night....hmmmmm

One of the stars was Mr John Hammill, a favorite of producer Herman (TARGET EARTH) Cohen.  Mr Hammill was a "physique" model and does some of what he does best in this 1972 film.  There is also an actor who wears the tightest pants I have ever seen in a movie.

Der Brucer is off being der Grampa all by himself today.  He is taking the grandlads on an exciting trip, to see the dentist!  I, meanwhile, will be at work.

Speaking of which, I had a most rude customer yesterday.

Part of my job is to bag people's groceries, which I am quite speedy at doing.  The customer in question stood there, watching me bag, and started to get quite agetated.  Suddenly, he reached over and grabbed items out of my hands, rearranging them in the bags as I was putting them in, cursing about how I wasn't doing my job right, how I wasn't bagging them correctly because I wasn't bagging the items in the order that he would be putting them on the shelves when he got home!

His lover just stood there, rolling his eyes.  I refrained from asking if my bagging competitor had taken his meds recently.

I don't get many rude customers, but when I do they are doozies.

SPOILER

SPOILER

SPOILER

I found the ending rather unsettling.  I also felt just a bit "used" or "manipulated" -- her final dream was a full playout of the partial dream she had before reasoning with the mother to make the difference in her son's life.

Did that mother have the full dream and, realizing it would take her death to save her son, kill herself with an overdose?

Or....???

It makes me think, even now...but I was left wanting to know a bit more about the mother's part in all the doings.

Hmmm... As for Art House films... Most of mine would be foreign films... And I saw most of them at the now-demolished art house in Georgetown.

"Un Coeur en Hiver"
"Like Water for Chocolate"
"Cinema Paradiso"
"La Lectrice"

More recently:
"A Home At the End of the World"
"The Brown Bunny" - NOT![/b]  -If that's art, and Vincent Gallo is an artiste, well, then I'm getting out of the biz.

More seriously, "white trash" is a demeaning word used by der Brucer's daughter to indicate people she considers to be of a lower status than she.

Yes, it is quite often used in this way.

Its origins are interesting: The phrase was used by slaves in the South in reference to the poor whites who worked in the fields like the slaves did.

My own take on the term -- and what I mean when I use it -- is those people who have had every advantage of education and access to enlightenment and have chosen to ignore it and cling to prejudice and hatred.

But there are those who quibble over the phrase as being guilty of being as discriminatory as the people to whom it has been applied...that it implies whites are not trash unless so designated (which gets a big "duh" from me, since that would be a yes) but that it also implies everyone else who is not white would have to be, by virtue of the discriminatory word "white", also be trash.

So...that's why I'm trying to suss out what the phrase means to different peopl.

Jrand, correct, Bonjour Tristesse was not a hit at the box-office.

When I was a kid (as those who've read Benjamin Kritzer know), one of my childhood theaters became an "art-house" venue, and that's where I saw all my first art-house films (well, that and the Fine Arts on Wilshire near La Cienega - that one has a different name but is STILL an art-house).  At the Lido, I saw Diabolique, The Red Balloon, several Fernandel films (which I enjoyed) and many others.  Of course, what was "art-house" here may have been hugely successful in the films' native country, like Cherbourg, and Sundays and Cybele, and That Man From Rio, all of which I loved.
Title: Re:IN SEARCH OF A BON MOT
Post by: bk on January 24, 2006, 09:25:49 AM
And Cherbourg ended up in art-houses here in LA but started exclusively in a large theater - the Beverly in Beverly Hills.

DR Ron Pulliam - Seriously(?), I've always thought "white trash" had a Southern implication to it.  Basically uneducated.  Basically a derogatory term.  I don't think I really heard the term until I started school in Richmond.

However, I have noticed that it has been recently applied to someone who flaunts their lack of education, lack of modesty, lack of "general style", and garners publicity and money from their "efforts".  -And sometimes, these people actually do have a decent amount of education, modesty and style, and they're just putting on an act in order to garner publicity and make money.

I am anxiously awaiting my copy of QUINCEANEROS, DR MBARNUM.  Your Annette CD package also includes a special surprise which I hope you don't already own!

You will LOVE the movie...and the Mexican John Saxon who is in it! Woohoo!

And of course MAMBO GIRL is included! Could that be an art house film? LOL! Prolly not.

DR MattH, I sort of agree with what you wrote about last night's MEDIUM.  Yes it was good. And yes it held my attention.  But I don't think it's as good as it has been.

The dreams connection to the plot was more predictable than usual. And even the person involved in the crime was predictable.  The only thing i didn't expect was what happened to the mother. That part was interesting.

Still one of my favorite shows though.

The title song of "Hootenany Hoot" (Sheb Wooley) was Top ten hit here in OZ DR MBarnum. (As indeed was "Hootannany" by The Glencoves) - 1963.

Joe & Eddie's "There's A Meetin' Here Tonight" was very much a one hit wonder here in Melbourne but the duo was very successful in Adelaide!

Buy that album DRMBARNUM.  I just bought - for $1.99 plus s/h, an album of the Trapp Family singers singing the songs from THE SOUND OF MUSIC.

This album claims that the Von Trapps took their musical mentor Father Franz Wasner with them when they went over the Alps, and he lived with them for the rest of his life.  That sure wasn't in the movie!

Well, Mr Hamill was definitely a student of the casting couch school of drama, along with several others I know but won't name.

The characters in "Tobacco Road" are white trash, probably in "Baby Doll" as well.

Now, DRRLP - in and of themselves these items don't point to any particular cultural group:

Nascar memorabilia
Garth Brooks CD box sets
Dress jeans for funerals and weddings
Confederate Flags
A non-running car in the front yard
No screen door on the trailer
Your kids wear only Pampers or Luvs to the WalMart

As I say, individually they don't mean anything....but if you add them all up, said person is probably white trash.

Although DRPENNYO's post is correct, it has nothing to do with income or social position.

SAM:  Are you having trouble in the bathroom?

ICE STATION ZEBRA occupied the last 2 hours of my afternoon. The movie could have lost 10 or 15 minutes of footage with no loss of continuity, but it's still an entertaining movie.

The DVD looks simply wonderful for a film this old, and the repurposed Dolby Digital 5.1 is excellent, especially in the "breaking through the ice" sequences and in the second half once they arrive at the station with the howling wind, etc.

Yes, it's obviously studio sets (no frosty breath when folks talk), but you expect that with most films of that era. Didn't bother me a bit.

Good Afternoon!

A nice run.  A bit windy, but a nice run.  And I believe my pace is picking up.  I ran three miles in 26 minutes.  That's basically a personal best for me, and I wasn't even huffing and puffing that hard.

:)

And I made my usual stop at Whole Foods for a Jamba Juice - I tried their Coldbuster today (with a Protein Boost) - and I picked up a salad to consume later.

And I've stretched and cooled down, and now...

OH!

J&R has had first-day-of-release sales in the past.  So, I have a feeling that the $5.99 The Color Purple OCR is not a mistake.  I guess they're hoping that people will go ahead and buy something else while they're there.  -And, actually, I usually stock up at J&R since their regular prices are equivalent to Tower's and Virgin's sale prices.  And they tend to be well-stocked at all time in all categories of music and DVDs.

Yes, it was Hal.  And right after his stunning work on DON'T KNOCK THE TWIST!!

That is true....

Hollywood took liberties with the story....

Here is the link for for you

Well, Mr Hamill was definitely a student of the casting couch school of drama, along with several others I know but won't name.

I can't even find John Hamill listed in the credits for TOWER OF EVIL.  I assume he is not the star.  I did see that Jill Haworth is listed as being in the film.

Obviously, Mr. Hamill must now be in his seventies, or Mr. Barnum would not have been watching the film.

DR DakotaCelt - re Playboy of the Western World.

I can thoroughly recommend "The Empress of Ireland" by Christopher Robbins.  It is about the life of Director Brian Desmond Hurst" - funny, informative and at times very moving.

I will check it out...

I love the score from the 1963 version. IT was rather fascinating. It was also great to see one of the greats in Irish pipering, Leo Rowsome.  It was done by Sean O Riada and his group, Ceoltoiri Cualann.  Ceoltoiri Cualann was the forerunner to the Chieftains led by Paddy Moloney. Huge fan of Irish Music, specially the  Chieftains.

It was one of the first movies to incorporate true traditional Irish music from an orchestral point of view. The music is from actual folk melodies and no incorporation of American-Irish vaudevillian influences.

The other movie that incorporated Irish music was Lovespell  (AKA Tristan and Isolde). It was the first movie to use Irish traditional instruments for the score. The Chieftains were involved also in Kubrick's film, Barry Lyndon. They won an Oscar for their work on that one.  They also contributed music to the movie, The Grey Fox, where they won  a Juno award.

DRJRand55, you are welcome!

I just got a good review of Deceit in the mail - some rag I've never heard of before.  Unfortunately, it's so ineptly written it's an embarrassement.  That, and the fact that the reviewer starts at the beginning of the play and tells the ENTIRE story from start to finish, in detail, with every plot twist there for all to see.  I mean, what IS the matter with these people.

During college I used to go see a lot of art house stuff and foreign films.  Madchen in Uniform, Hour of the Wolf, Virgin Spring, Seven Samurai,Claire's Knee, Elvira Madigan.  That was back in those years where I felt it was my obligation to see EVERYTHING.  I since realized life is too short and have gotten much more selective.  Also I used to go every April to the City of Lights, City of Angels French film festival, courtesy of the WGA, and would see things like Captaine Conan and En Garde.  I would say En Garde (or Le Bossou) and Ridicule have been my favourite art house films in recent memory.

I had a most rude customer yesterday.

I'm sorry but this made me laugh. ;D

Where is DRJANE today?

I had to go to Medford (the town DRMBarnum hails from) and see the dermatologist.  He said the spot where he removed the skin cancer is healing fine.  What he couldn't tell me is when it would look decent enough I can wear my hair pulled back.  Of course he said I must wear a hat if I do that. ;D

I then did a ton of errands in Medford (I really don't enjoy going there) before returning home.  I purchased some new dishes and silverware and treated myself to some See's candy.

I like the new silverware very much, just one problem, the fork is longer than our current forks are and I kept poking the back of my throat with it.  I must learn to eat more lady-like and not like white trash.

But after watching two hours of it tonight, I'll be skipping tomorrow night completely. They are the San Francisco auditions.

THE SHIELD had another compelling hour with Forest Whitaker and Michael Chiklis finally facing off after weeks of build-up. Fireworks to come for sure!

But that means I had to let the DVR get an hour of SCRUBS, THE CLOSER, and LOVE MONKEY tonight as I watched other things.

Should have time to get to them all tomorrow.

Good Evening!

...We just had a weird bit of weather come through here too.  As I was leaving the theatre, it was sprinkling lightly.  Then as I crossed the street to the parking lot, it started raining-raining.  And then as I got into my car it started pouring.  Wind gusts.  Some lightning and thunder.  And then about 20 minutes later it stopped.

It apparently even caught the local weather people off guard too.  The guys on the radio actually sounded surprised.  They knew that high winds and lower temps were due in tomorrow, but as for tonight...  Just weird.

Good eve, all.

What a day this has been, let me tell ya... Actually, I won't tell ya cause I'm not sure that I could rehash it all one more time today. "It" is something that I've been dealing with for a very long time - nearly 20 years - and "it" is all finally coming to a head now and will very likely change the dynamics of my family and my life. No, this has nothing to do with coming out and I'm not dying. I'm neither an alcoholic nor a junkie. "It" is of a personal nature and, while I won't divulge details here on the board, I just wanted to let you guys know that I'm going through some stuff right now and may not be around much over the next few days and/or weeks. I was so upset by "it" today that I went into the "ugly cry" at work and had to leave the office at noon. It wasn't pretty.

HHW is like a family to me, and you have all been very supportive and caring and encouraging in the past for much less significant problems. In a rare move for me, I'm asking now for your support and encouragement and prayers to help me wade through my stuff and come out on the other side a better, happier person. You are all very special to me in your own ways and I feel secure in the fact that I will have dozens of friends around the world to see me through.

Here's to new beginnings and hopeful, happier futures!

Well, I have a Noon matinee tomorrow... And since I didn't get up until 11:30 today...  And I also have to get my bag/luggage ready for San Francisco tonight before I head to bed since I'll be out most of tomorrow - and I have to leave for the airport by 6:00am on Thursday morning... So...

Goodnight.

This is something I haven't seen before:  we are having an ice storm with lightning and thunder.  This is end of days weather, this is.

We had one of those last fall... Even stranger when we get Thunder Snow

I read that actor Chris Penn died. I'm sad about that.

He was part of that wonderful "Let's Hear for the Boys" number ion the movie FOOTLOOSE, co-starred in AT CLOSE RANGE with his brother Sean and was also one of the RESERVOIR DOGS.

He had a lovely part on a WILL & GRACE episode as Barry Manilow's road manager who developed a crush on Will.

I also just read that NBC has taken THE BOOK OF DANIEL off its schedule. It will not complete its run.

Seeing the low ratings and a lack of advertising support for the show, I'm not surprised at all by this decision, but it still makes me sad.

Greetings from the extremely errant and truant. Where to begin... where to begin.

I guess I should let you know that Sweeney went well and I was told by many regulars at the theatre that it was the best show they had ever seen at the Muncie Civic. (Still no pictures, hopefully will hve them soon.)

A Tale of Two Cities was great in November. Sadly I didn't really have time to really visit anyone, but it was well worth the trip. James Barbour was amazing, and Natalie Toro nearly stopped the reading with her performance of Out of Sight, Out of Mind. The producers were just great and introduced me to many, many people. Jill Santoriello is perhaps one of the nicest people I have ever met also!

I am now in my third week back at school. Much better schedule this semester. (No more working until 3 AM when I have a 9:30 AM class.) I also am in the process of planning for my eventual goal of trying to open a non-profit theatre group working with underpriviledged children and children with disabilities in an inclusive setting. (What a mouthful!) Fridays are completely devoted to that even though it is a few years away. I am also starting to volunteer with a local theatre program that works with disabled students.

Top that off with 16 hours of classes a week, 17 hours of work, and then all my responsibilities as publicity chair for the Catholic Student Union which is a part time job in and of itself.

I am also helping direct a musical at a local Catholic school in Muncie next spring and we are beginning to plan for that. Small schools generally don't get the opportunity to do a real show experience so we really would like to do "Schoolhouse Rock Live!" with them. We are already trying to figure out how to get the money to pay royalties for that as their funds are extremely limited, but we have a few ideas.

Oh and I dyed my hair purple last Thursday because I lost a bet. (The Colts lost.) It's mostly washed out now and I am slightly dissapointd as I thought it would last a bit longer.

I am sure I am forgetting many, many things.
