Yes, the game is afoot, the notes have been read and now all that's left is for posts to be posted so go to it.

Well, I was going to post this "yesterday", but then I dilly-dallied too long, and got locked out... And since it's now REALLY late - almost bordering on early, here's the quick version...

Hotels in NYC - The Skyline Hotel, 725 10th Ave. (at 52nd).  Nice rooms - large for NYC - be sure to ask for a room in the west wing, fully renovated and a pool on the 10th floor!  Plus, the parking is very cheap - whether or not you're staying there.  *I've priced this for my trip in January - some rates as low as $90/night!  And just far away from the noise of Times Square, but still close enough to walk to everything.

Alma Mahler - Maya mentioned the movie... And I think there was a soundtrack released too with some of his and her music on it.

Oh, and I was snacking on some Buffalo Wing and Blue Cheese potato chips.  Surprisingly - and scarily - tasty.  And I washed it all down with an ice cold Fresca.  Hopefully, I'll be able to sleep tonight.. or at least NOT have bad dreams.

Well, I'll sleep on the detective topic - literally...

Goodnight.

Oh, and as for the Hotel Pennsylvania... Yes, it's cheap.  Yes, it's right across from MSG.  BUT since it is across the street from MSG, it's one of the "host" hotels for the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.  They put sawdust down in the hallways during that time.  And the one and only time I stayed there - not my choice - I could tell that the Kennel Club used the hotel if you know what I mean.  Also, the rooms were dark, the bed was uncomfortable, and the water pressure was non-existent.  I guess you could say I give it a "thumbs down".

December the First!  :o

Nick and Nora Charles are two of my favorite fictional sleuths.  And of course Miss Marple.

Mike Hammer - particularly as played by Mr Ralph Meeker in Kiss Me, Deadly.

And in a round about way:  Dagny Taggert!  ;D

Well I am going to buy BOTH "Odds Against Tomorrow" and "Crime of Passion".

Richard Bright is the actor who plays Coco, the gay thug in OAT.  When I saw it last year on TCM, I was a bit surprised at the performance myself.  He doesn't have a lot of screen time, but his couple of scenes are revelatory.

Oh and regarding The Hotel Pennsylvania - I haven't stayed there in about fifteen years and I assume Jose's stay was more recent, so I guess it must have deteriorated since then.  I know the dogs weren't there when I was.

Inspector Clouseau

I saw two movies this weekend:  Bad Santa, and a preview of The Last Samurai.

The first was produced by the Coen Brothers, although not written or directed by either.  It got good reviews in the NY area, and critics called it hilarious.  Hilarious it was not!  In fact, and I'm no prude, I thought it was vulgar with just a few minor chuckles.  The theater was packed, and other than load guffaws by a few in the audience, my feeling is that the audience hated it.  It was the 6th highest grossing film this weekend, but I'm going to predict that it falls dramatically next, when the word of mouth gets out.  This is the second Coen Brothers film this season that I've disliked - I thought that Intolerable Cruelty was also awful and not funny at all.

With respect to The Last Samurai, this is a terrific film that has to be seen on a large screen in a theater to get is full impact.  Although it is large in scope, it really tells an intimate story.  The main theme has to do with the Westernization of Japan, which reminded of Sondheim's Pacific Overtures.  In fact, many of the Japanese are seen in their bowler hats, which of course caused my to replay "A Bowler Hat" in my mind throughout the movie.  This is the type of film that is likely to generate many Academy Award nominations and falls in the class of Bravehart, Dances With Wolves, and Gladiator.  Cruise and the supporting cast are all excellent and I won't be surprised to see Cruise capture the elusive Oscar that he has for so long sought to win.  I'm sure the film itself will be in the running for best picture along side Seabiscuit.  The film runs almost 2 1/2 hours, but it didn't seem long and the entire packed audience did not appear to be restless at all.  A very cinematic experience in both sight and sound.  The musical score by Hans Zimmer was very powerful.  BK, you might find the score too intrusive, but I would disagree here.  I highly recommend this movie.

By the way, I was doing a search for a book that was mentioned on this here site a couple of weeks ago.  I thought the name was EVER AFTER but an unseemly search could not find it and the book was not listed on Amazon.  It was a book on musical theatre from the last quarter century or so.  Does anyone know the correct name and the author?  Thanks.

DRMusicGuy is  a sucker for just about ANY sleuth--- he loves them all.

I love Agatha Christie's creations-- Miss Marple especially (in print and in film), M. Poirot also.

The Bobbsey Twins solved mysteries, too, you know!

Columbo and Jessica Fletcher are faves.  The various incarnations of Richard Diamond and Sam Spade, the real and only Nick and Nora Charles (Myrna Loy and William Powell).
Amos Burke and Honey West were faves too.
Charlie Chan and the rest.
Which is why I appreciate "Murder By Death" so much and its spoof of plot devices, etc.

It was utter coincidence that DW Joy had Alma Mahler and other Tom Lehrer TWTWTW favorites on her CD for the bus ride back from Pennsylvania.  Made the time pass mirthfully, although we'd waited more than a half hour in the cold for the bus.

My favorite fictional tecs come from musicals, of course.  I like Mo Brummel, from Mr. Douglas Cohen's No Way To Treat a Lady, and of course have a dear spot in my heart for the first sleuth I saw on a musical stage, Peter Pulley of the Yard.  Not only can he catch your crook, but he can step into patter baritone roles at a moment's notice

Good morning all.  Even though I am on vacation, I thought I should start to get my butt out of bed even if I did stay up past midnight with the chat and all.  If I let myself get to far out of routine, I will have a devil of a time with getting readjusted to the work schedule and the Holidays are tiring enough as it is.

December 1st.  Wow.  Where has the year gone?  Is it truly almost Christmas?  How can that be?

I enjoyed last nights chat, few people that were there. The one time I can stay up late and chat till the cows come home (and I really wanted to see a cow come home) and only a couple were there.  Not that they were A couple–at least, I didn’t get the impression they were.  Any who,  I hope the cookies turned out for you, George.

Hope your headache is much better, Noel.  Did you dream of the Shire?  Golem?  Frodo?

I gave some thought to what you said last night and think perhaps you are right–at least in the case of a playwright.  Maybe one should take the size of a stage and the limits as to what can be done  into consideration when writing a play but I still do not agree that holds true for a motion picture or my Animal Christmas.

After all, any leader, like  Jean-Luc, only has to say, “Make it so!”.  That’s a Star Trek: Next Generation reference, in case you don’t know.  He doesn’t provide the blue print for the Mass Trans Crystal Humbug Inverter Thing.  He just tells them to build it! The same with my Animal Christmas.  I just know what I want.  Doing it is a whole different set of variables that are not my problem.  Sigh, getting good help is so hard these days.

Well, I guess since I'm on vacation, I should go do something fun and take pictures while doing it.  Isn't that what vacations are for?  Taking pictures, I mean?   :)

D

I am starving, starving, starving. I think I need food.

Gee, it looks like the karma gremlins were out last night! :)

I would like to see ODDS AGAINST TOMORROW. Kim Hamilton of LEECH WOMAN fame is in it as, I believe, Harry Belefonte's wife...does she have much of a role BK or JRand53??

Favorite detectives:
Hildegard Withers in those quaint old 1930s films as portrayed by Edna Mae Oliver.

Perry Mason as portrayed by Raymond Burr on television

Dave (Lee Patterson) and Ken (Van Williams) on SURFSIDE 6

Miss Marple on film

On the printed page there are many that I like as I love a good mystery book!

For DR Emily: Amazon.ca news.  Ha I ordered Boy from Oz and Avenue Q on Saturday and they said that the latter would take 1 to 2 weeks. Yet they are shipping it now.  Very bizarre. For some reason whenever they usually say there will be delays there always are!  So this is a nice surprise.

So tell us what you are considering for your NY trip? Last we heard you were going on a bus tour. Then you mentioned hotels and hostels. Do tell!  (I miss NYC and need to live vicariously through somebody).

Kim Hamilton has two good scenes in Odds Against Tomorrow.  Shelley Winters, who is top-billed, doesn't have much more, and Gloria Grahame only has two little scenes and her performance is so strange I didn't know what to make of it.

Favorite fictional detectives? I love SO many of them because mysteries are my passion.

Sherlock Holmes tops the list, and as I've been foaming at the mouth with joy over the pleasures of the two (so far) boxed sets of Universal HOLMES movies, he has to rank at the top.

Miss Marple is right up there, too, as my blather last week about the four Margaret Rutherford movies occupied a couple of days of posts from me. Rutherford wasn't true to the Miss Marple from Christie's books, of course, but those four movies she made were nevertheless VERY entertaining. Joan Hickson's BBC movies as Miss Marple are, of course, definitive, and I've got them all here and they are watched constantly. NEMESIS is my favorite of her films.

Hercule Poirot is wonderful, but I find a little of him goes a long way. I am STILL pining for Paramount to release MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS on DVD, but my widescreen videotape is OK for now.

Phillip Marlowe is really enjoyable, and my favorite Marlowe is Robert Mitchum in FAREWELL MY LOVELY. Bogie's Marlowe is fine in THE BIG SLEEP, but he's better as Sam Spade in THE MALTESE FALCON, perhaps the greatest movie mystery ever made.

TV: My first choice is Jim Hutton's ELLERY QUEEN, and I would love to have a complete set of the one season he did that series on television. Those period mysteries were really wonderfully done and very baffling, yet the clues WERE right there if you were observent enough to catch them.

Angela Lansbury's Jessica Fletcher would have been my pick if the series had ended after six years, but I felt the last six years were mere reflections of the highly polished and well done stories of the first years.

DR MBARNUM, Mr BK is correct and I must say that Kim's scenes are very good.  I forgot she was in LEECH WOMAN.  I am going to order it tomorrow when I can get the DeepDiscount 20 percent off - you can't get it on pre-orders of new releases and the street date for ODDS AGAINST TOMORROW is oddly enough, tomorrow!  It is the same for Crime of Passion with Missy Stanwyck.

How could I forget Sherlock Holmes - I didn't count Perry Mason as a detective....but then there were also those guys at 77 Sunset Strip and Surfside 6 who were Private Investigaors!  And Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys.

Fictional Detectives:  Sam Spade, Nancy Drew, Charlie Chan, Nick and Nora, and (for me) the ultimate detective: Columbo.

BK: RE: Spielberg mucking up the story with too many flourishes and too much shoehorning of formulaic schmaltz (not that you phrased it just that way; perhaps I embellished a bit), ITA.  I love early Spielberg: Sugarland Express, Murder by the Book (an episode of Columbo he directed), Jaws...pretty much up through Raiders of the Lost Ark (one of my favorite films of all time).  Then something happened.  Too much adulation?  His early stuff was SO sharp and smart and creative - so visually dynamic and distinctive.  Then he turned into a big sap.  I could get angry about it if I let myself.

Over the weekend The Hubby and I rented the DVD of Monsters, Inc.  This came out two summers ago, IIRC, and I don't think it was one of Pixar's bigger hits; didn't Shrek get all the attention when it came out at the same time?

Well, I still haven't brought myself to watch Shrek, even though I own it (a gift); the little clips I've seen look pretty awful.  But Monsters, Inc. was delightful - incredible to look at (as is usually the case with Pixar) but also very inventive and clever.  We've waded through many of the extras, most of which are extremely entertaining - but there are still many to go, and the DVD is due back soon.  We might just buy it so we can see it again and have the time to explore all the special features at our leisure.  Anyway, if you haven't seen it yet, I recommend doing so.

Hmmm, after that long post, I realized I didn't talk about Poirot as much as I should since he IS one of the greats. All of the actors who have played him in the movies that I've seen (some of the earliest incarnations made in England in the early 1930s I've never seen) have done excellent jobs (funny yet different in portraying his annoying little habits and eccentricities) with the exception of Tony Randall who I felt was wildly miscast in THE ALPHABET MURDERS. Thankfully, David Suchet's Poirot righted that masterpiece of detective fiction in the BBC version of the story THE ABC MURDERS.

DR Lulu, MONSTERS INC. was Pixar/Disney's biggest hit until FINDING NEMO. Yes, SHREK won the Oscar for Best ANimated Feature that year, but it was a monster hit at the box-office. I just happen to have the list of Disney's Top 25 biggest grossing world hits in animnation, and MONSTER'S INC ranked 2nd next to THE LION KING (this as of October 16) with $256 million in US/Canada gross and $268 million in Overseas gross. NEMO has made more domestically, but it hasn't launched all around the world yet so it ranks only 6th in this list.

hMMM, well, since Ms. Hamilton does such a good job in ODDS AGAINST TOMORROW you have convinced me to buy it! She is on Fox movies this week in THE WIZARD OF BAGHDAD and I am toying with the idea of interviewing her. She is still a working actress so perhaps she will be agreable to that.

There no butts about it - DRs Lulu and Noel can relax!  ;D

No Man of Her Own - that is some meller-drama with a train wreck 'n everything....in fact, everything but the bloodhounds snappin' at her rear end!   :P

All I Desire is one strange movie DR MATTH.  Sometimes I get it confused with the one where she comes back into town and her ex manufactures toy robots....but I think that is a different movie, isn't it?  I know AID was one of Sirk's Universal pictures, not sure about the other one.

Chat last night was very fun, even though I left about an hour in to do some unpacking.  I'm sooo not wanting to go back to school today...ah well, what can ya do?  The semester will be over soon anyway, and then....Christmas break!  It can not happen soon enough.

Hmmm....I'm afraid I can't really contribute much to the discussion of favorite sleuths, because I'm really not much of a mystery/detective gal.  I don't know a Hercule Poirot from a Philip Marlowe.  But can I go with Nancy Drew?  I read one or two of the ND books when I was little.

Jose--What did you think of "Bride of the Wind?"  I thought it was pretty serviceable, and it turned me into an Oscar Kokoschka fan!

SteveG--I have to respectfully disagree about "Bad Santa."  I saw it in NYC, and I thought that while it was very vulgar, it was acridly funny.  I liked Terry Zwigoff's previous film "Ghost World" better, but I thought "Bad Santa" was a good follow-up with the same dark spirit.  I mean, sure, the characters weren't exactly three-dimensional, and the ending didn't quite gel with the rest of the movie, but I laughed a great deal.  I DO want to see "The Last Samurai" though!

MBarnum--love the new pic!

Jrand--your pic is swell too!  And I'm sure your karma being taken away was just a mistake.

Well, I haven't seen THE LAST SAMUARI, but after seeing the previews on TV, I thought to myself that it looked like a cross between BRAVEHEART, DANCES WITH WOLVES, and SEVEN SAMUARI, none of which would interest me. (Well, I DID like DANCES WITH WOLVES, but I really endured BRAVEHEART looking at my watch the entire time.)

Lo and behold, I open VARIETY on-line this morning, and the review was all about how it resembled those movies coming up short in every respect from each of them. And it's 154 minutes, another negative from my rear end's perspective.

I'm sure it's beautifully made and I wish everyone connected with it well, but they won't be getting my money on the theater or on home video. This is one I may give a chance once it makes it to HBO/Showtime, but that's all the chance I'll give it.

I have a VCD of Who Killed Teddy Bear.  Maya, here are my recommendations - for Philip Marlowe read Farewell, My Lovely or The High Window (both available in paperback) and then, for Lew Archer, read The Chill, one of the best PI novels ever.  For Poirot, I still love Roger Ackroyd best, even though he's more central to many of the other Christie books.

Oh, gosh, I forgot all about Nick and Nora Charles of THE THIN MAN series. Love them all, and wouldn't part with my laserdisc boxed set for anything. Warners released the first film on DVD last year, and the next two were in the running for their classics series this year, but neither of them won in the voting at AOL (THE DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES, DR. JECKYLL AND MR. HYDE, THE WIND AND THE LION did), so I don't know when that will mean they will get released.

I know people will probably enjoy The Last Samurai, but I just can't stand this overblown type of film (at least that's what it sounds like) - Mr. Ed Zwick loves this sort of bombast, but at that length I'll just pass for a while.

Good morning... well, it's the afternoon here already in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Well, since I did not get to bed until around 4:30am last night/morning, I had no choice but to sleep in this morning.  I first peeked at my clock radio around 9:56.. then again at 11:00-ish... and that's when I got out of bed.  -I got "sucked" into watching that movie about Bob Crane last night on cable - Auto Focus (?).  Interesting, eh...

I've gone through my mail from the past week - the usual bills and some new CDs - let's see how long it takes for me to listen to all of them - let alone get them unwrapped.   ;)

As for fictional detectives...  I never got into any of the Agatha Christie creations - Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot.  But I did have to read "Ten Little Indians" for my English class my freshman year in high school.  -I still remember the method of murder, but not the one who carried them out...

Growing up, I watched the usual TV detective/police shows: Columbo, Mannix, Hawaii-Five-O, Rockford Files, etc.  Oh, and Quincy!  And I guess Night Stalker could be considered a sort of detective show.

As for The Last Samurai - I just saw the commercial on TV - first time for me (just too much time in the theatre lately).  I may have to wait on this one too.  *Unfortunately, when I'm in a show, sometimes the last thing I want to do is to spend some more time in another theatre.

And one more follow up on The Hotel Pennsylvania - My guess is that they have some nicer floors and nicer rooms than the one I stayed in.  However, I do remember the room being large by NYC standards.  I just happened to be placed in a not-so-nice one.  I remember staying at the Hotel Edison during a few trips up in high school.  They were in the middle of renovating the hotel.  It was shocking the difference in quality between the "old" rooms and the "new" rooms.  -And they really did a nice job with the renovations.  Oh, and I've also foung the Wellington Hotel pretty reasonable - and if you have a bunch of people in your party, they have some nice two room suites with two bathrooms(!) that don't cost much more than their regular rooms.  *They have a big international clientele - lots of tour groups - and their desk staff is multi-lingual.

As for hostels in NYC...  I've never used them, but I have friends who have.  Some of the usual caveats apply here:  Do you have an International Youth Hostel card?  Do you mind having limited access to your room during the day?  Etc., etc., etc...

Well, time for me to get in gear...

*Oh, and any Y&R fans?  Brad (Don Diamont) doesn't look bad with facial hair... :P

Oh - DR MBarnum - As Jrand already stated - AIM = AOL Instant Messenger.  *AIM actually is more fully-featured than AIM-in-AOL.  And you can actually run both at the same time.

Detectives, eh?  Hmm... not something I"ve read a whole heck of a lot of.  I did greatly enjoy the only Agatha Christie I've read, Ten Little Indians.  When I was but a twig of a sprig of a lad, I was a big Encyclopedia Brown fan.  And after that, I couldn't get enough Hardy Boys.

That is a pic of myself with actress Carolyn Kearney when I went to her house for lunch last September during my lovely visit to Los Angeles. She is holding up a copy of Filmfax which is opened up to the interview article I did on her. She is such a sweet lady and I fell in love with her big dog Coda! The picture is quite blurry. Hurts his hand after punching bad guys
Great relationship with his dad Rocky
Puts up with Angel

I got a lot of results, but none of them had what I was searching for and they were all from the last couple of days even though what I wanted was mentioned here two or three weeks ago.

I am trying to find the author of EVER AFTER, a book that was discussed on this here site.  I tried searching EVER AFTER and got the results I described above; part of the book is supposed to be about A CHORUS LINE but a search for that did nothing.

If you can find this I'd appreciate it as I am going to Drama Book Store later (they just got THE COMPLETE LYRICS OF FRANK LOESSER in stock) and I want to pre-order EVER AFTER but need make sure that is the right title and find out who is the author.

I'll post the problem on the technical board.

It is MAPDECSTAMPS expires dec 31st.

Not sure how much you have to buy. But of course we always order $39 to get the free shipping.

Oh there is also a good coupon from chapters (http://www.chapters.indigo.ca) that gives you $10 if you order $50 (with free shipping in canada).

Love these coupons. You just go to www.chapters.indigo.ca/canadapost to register and they send you the coupon by email.

Favorite fictional detectives? I love SO many of them because mysteries are my passion.

TV: My first choice is Jim Hutton's ELLERY QUEEN, and I would love to have a complete set of the one season he did that series on television. Those period mysteries were really wonderfully done and very baffling, yet the clues WERE right there if you were observent enough to catch them.

Great choice!

COlumbia House that sells videotapes of many series in monthly installments (which is how I collected KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER; now I understand it's coming to DVD in a boxed set) did not offer ELLERY QUEEN or I would have them. Too bad I wasn't recording them when A&E used to show them regularly. The MYSTERY channel doesn't have them either, or they didn't back when I had that channel. It's in another tier on digital cable now so I don't subscribe to it.

Since everyone else is still listing their choices for hotels in New York, I will list my favorite, although I already sent my suggestion to Emily.  My favorite place to stay, when I am in New York, is the Milford Plaza.  It is always clean and comfortable, their security people strictly control who goes up to the room floors, and you couldn't ask for a more convenient hotel.  There must be eight Broadway theaters within half a block of the hotel.  And the employees are usually very friendly. (Don't go there, Ozzie!)

What a nice day it is outside here in Richmond.  The sky has been going back and forth between really cloudy and gray, and now partly cloudy and nicely blue.  And the temp feels like Fall- even though we're almost to winter.

Good trip to the bank - hopefully, I'll never have to make a bad trip to the bank - and a nice impromptu grocery store run.  Picked up some lunch - a nice rotisserie turkey panini on olive bread, and some pea salad - as well as some mini-chocolate chips (on sale), and some Oreos (almost 1/2 price!).  Oh, and a nice chocolate almond bar.   ;D

Now to do something today... or not... I should do some cleaning up around the apartment.  My roomie started setting up the Christmas stuff over the weekend.  Unfortunately, he failed to clean the dust and other stuff off the places where he decorated.  So... I may be doing some redecorating this afternoon.  Or I may just leave it all in place since it's all "hidden" right now - and I really won't be here during the holiday season... But it's the fact that I know it's there...  Ah, well...

As for the Hotel Edison - It's nice.  I always make a point to walk through the lobby at least once when I'm in NYC.  Just brings back lots of happy memories from high school.  And I usually end up having breakfast or a quick pre-theatre dinner there with all the gypsies and assorted theatre folk.

Maya - I never got the see the Alma Mahler movie - just read all the blurbs about it.  I don't think it stayed long enough in DC for me to catch it between shows.

I have stayed at the Milford Plaza quite a few times in my life, too, but not lately. Their lobby is so small, and when you're waiting on people to meet you, there often isn't a place to sit. But the rooms are comparable to the Edison, I think, about the same size. The security feature is nice, I have to admit.

JRand 53...I bought a couple of the latest issue of Scarlet Street, but have not received any.

Well, today's topic is one that warms my heart.  Favourite sleuths:

I'd have to start with Sherlock who has not only given me lots of reading pleasure, but has been an inordinate boost to my career what with having written three Sherlock movies and a Sherlock Holmes play.

I think Young Sherlock a flatulent piece of crap, that wreaks havoc on the mythos of the Holmes canon.  Terrible movie.

I love Nick and Nora, both its literary source and the resulting films.

Ditto for Philip Marlowe and Sam Spade.  I also like the haughty, arch Mr. Philo Vance of the books. Ed and Am Hunter by Fredric Brown are fun as is any mystery by Fredric Brown.  Elvis Cole by Bob Crais and Harry Stoner, a Cincinnati detective, by Jonathan Valin are favs. Paul Pine by Howard Browne (originally published in the fifties under his pseudonym, John Evans).

I also fancy historical detectives:  Nicholas Bracewell, company mananger of an Elizabethan acting troup, by Edward Marston, and Roman detectives, Marcus Didius Falco by Lindsey Davis, and Gordianus the Finder by Steven Saylor.

And let us not forget Stuart Kaminsky's wonderful Toby Peters, Hollywood sleuth in the thirties and forties whose cases always revolve around a major Hollywood Star of the period.

And though not pure detectives, I always enjoy Sir Denis Nayland Smith and Dr. Petrie's efforts in unraveling the inscrutable mysterious  machinations of Fu Manchu (by Sax Rohmer).   Along similar lines Jules De Grandin and Dr. Trowbridge uncover occult mysteries written by Seabury quinn, mostly for Weird Tales Magazine.

I am enjoying all the Warner Bros. detectives....Sunset Strip, Hawaiian Eye, & Surfside Six...that are currently being revived on the Good Times Network.

And there's the PBS mystery stuff with Tommy and Tuppence and Lord Peter Whimsey.

Sorry to hear that DR Jane.  I hope everything eventually works itself out in your favor.

One of my credit card numbers was "hijacked" a few years ago.  Luckily, the limit on it was low, and the charges never got run through.  The crook was trying to charge almost $400 of liquor at a store in Brooklyn.  Thankfully, my credit card company knew I would never buy $400 of liquor anywhere.

And back to NYC hotels...  I've stayed at the Milford Plaza too.  Just remember, when they say it's a "small" room - they mean small - I think my door hit the bed when I opened it!

Hi all!

Growing up it was the Hardy Boys - both the books (which I devoured) and a TV mini-series (?) that was a part of one of the Disney kids shows.  Never got into Sherlock Holmes (although a good friend of mine really studies the minutae).  Occasionally watched "Murder She Wrote" and "Columbo", but now I enjoy "Law & Order".

Quick note - Port Singers of Port Washington NY will be presenting an Irving Berlin revue mid-January.  Anyone interested, please email me off line.  Thanks!

I am not the detective fan in the family.  That's the role the most literate der Brucer plays.  I've lost track of the hours he's spent watching reruns of Murder She Wrote and Diagnosis Murder, he's got the bug so bad.

In book form, he's of course recommending Nero Wolfe and Kinsey Millhone.  Christie's Tommy and Tuppence Beresford rank high on his list.  A few that some people might not have heard of are:

The Roma Sub Rosa stories by Steven Saylor, featuring his detective Gordianus the Finder, all set in Ancient Rome.

The Monsieur Pamplemousse stories by Michael Bond, who also created Paddington Bear.  (Der Brucer discovered these stories while we were at a reading of excerpts from Benjamin Kritzer by BK at the Bookfellows Bookstore in Glendale, CA.  Consider yourself labled guilty, BK!)

And, if you care for a gay detective, there's the Dave Brandstetter stories, by Joseph Hansen.

I, too, love "The Thin Man" movies and have the laserdisc set of them.

I was also very fond of the TV series with Peter Lawford and Phyllis Kirk.  I understand there were 70 episodes of this show, and they should all be in the MGM vaults somewhere decomposing as we sit and peruse this forum.

Good afternoon DRs --

Well, DR Kerry was exactly right....I love good mystery stories and fictional sleuths.

Probably Poirot first, then Miss Marple.  And also in the book category, a most interesting twist on the "who-dunnit" type of book came out a few years back.  It was a series of books with titles like "Gold," "Scarlet," or stuff like that.  The main sleuth was a gay hairdresser in the Boston area named Stan something, and he always ended up kind of assisting a slightly gruff and apparently handsome police detective.  I'm sure a bunch of sharp readers on this site can name the author and the correct titles.

And I like Nick & Nora, and the recent incarnation of Nero Wolfe on made-for-TV films.

And back to NYC hotels...  I've stayed at the Milford Plaza too.  Just remember, when they say it's a "small" room - they mean small - I think my door hit the bed when I opened it!

You do have to be firm with the people at the Milford.  They have some rooms on each floor that are microscopic, and they try to put newcomers, who don't any better, into them.  If you get put in one of those rooms, you just go back and tell them that it is unacceptable, and if they say that is all they have left, tell them they either find out a larger room or you demand a discount on the room rate.  The regular rooms at the Milford are very nice.

Oh, and I must agree with the honorable Jrand, that one of the all-time most complex and fascinating "mysteries" of all time is "Atlas Shrugged."  I know, it is lots of philosophy and social comment, but there is a huge dose of mystery-soving in there as well.

 What a hell of a book !!

Seriously, I don't understand why people think Emily should stay in the 30s, 40's, 50's or even 60's.  She's hale and hardy, and it will cost her roughly $100 per night more to stay a stone's throw away from Broadway Theatres.

You know why I don't ask if dogs bite?  Because, when owners say they don't bite, and have never bitten anyone, that's when they invariably bite me.

I ran across the following, from an interview Matthew Amster-Burton held with the classic Julia Child, over at eGullet.com, and had to share:

Just once during our conversation, I felt that I was in the presence of Julia Child the entertainer. We were talking about the microwave oven, and she asked, "Have you ever tried cooking a lobster in it? A horrible experience! You turn it on, the lobster begins leaping around, and it's an awful thing. Do try it if you want an awful experience." How was the lobster? I asked. "Oh, it was good, it was done perfectly. I never want to try it again."

Tisk, tisk, Senor Kimmel... how could you have done THAT??!!?? Honestly. With or without famed facial hair, now see if Mr. Selleck will ever grace your virtual portals.

On a serious note: run, children, run to the www on your homepage, and check-out "On The Avenue" in NYC. A faboo boutique hotel in the 70's off Broadway. Deals a plenty for this venue on hotels.com. Rich earth tones, fresh decor, entertainment centers, and big, comfy beds.

DR Ron Pulliam, I subscribe to American Theatre Magazine, which also makes me a member of the Theater Communications Group.  AT is the organization's publication.  If you like serious theatre, particularly are interested in what's going on in regional as well as educational theatre, this can be an interesting magazine.  I sometimes feel it can be a bit too erudite, elitest, and arch...and I am an arch, erudite elitest.  Dealing often with off-mainstream playwrights and non-commercial, intellectual bullshit that can sometimes just get too precious. I think it sometimes deals with the aesthetic over the practical.  They usually have a play script published in each issue.  It's usually a play you've never heard of and rarely hear of again.  It also always carries a list of the production doings of all the major regional theatres who are a members of the organization.

For musical mavens or even those just interested in the mainstream commercial theatre, this mag would probably a disappointment.

The TCG organization has the following perks:

10 issues a year of American Theatre

Discounts on tickets to performances at participating theatres

15% discount on resource materials

1o% discount on all book from TCG and select theatre publishers.

Free catalog of publications...and a few other odds and ends.

Personally, I prefer Plays and Players and Plays International, but they're British with a focus on British Theatre.  American Theate is not however like the old Theatre Week or  even the old Theatre Arts Magazine from the forties thru the sixties.

Thank you, Maya, for your quick response & greeting! I already feel welcome. Assuming that's your picture, you are LOVELY, to boot, and I can imagine being wholly inappropriate with you!

Do I like baseball? Not in the least... this was the automatic name assigned me by Mr. Kimmel's new internet provider.

I lie. Like a rug.

Yes-- I LOVE baseball... mostly as it is played by those dressed in a "Dodgers" costume. I also like football, when performed by the jugadores de los Steelers Y Trojans del Southern California (Did I completely muck-up my spanglish?? Apologies).

BTW: Did I mention that I've been dining with Mr. Kimmel nearly every lunch hour for the past three weeks?? I honestly belive I could do a "mini unseemly journal" entry every day with my observations from those precious few minutes we share together...

A sample: Mostly I am coerced into a sort of servant boy role... whereas I am the one to phone-in the order, and then made to carry the "yummilicious" (BK's term) foodstuffs from the madding crowd far below and into the confines of the edit bay ("Where magic is made," again, BK's terminology) high atop the skyskraper where we toil for the benefit of those who purchase basic cable fare for their tellys. If allowed, I am sometimes invited to 'sup in' with BK and his harried editor.

Today's lunchtime revelation: our phone order wasn't processed properly, and Bruce was forced to eat his chicken salad sandwich without pickle chips properly inserted between said salad and the bread roll. Instead, a whole pickle spear was lying -- like a dead mackerel -- along the inside edge of the bread roll and chicken salad mix. In a moment of devine inspiration, Senor Kimmel made lemmons from lemonade, bit the bullet, and devoured the spear right along with the rest of the roll's contents... thereby FOOLING his tastebuds into believing they were eating simply (merely??) a girthier pickle chip. The new combination was decreed a winner, and the proclamation uttered, "I'll never have a sandwich any other way!"

Actually, most of it centers around the fact that there are not enough gay and lesbian characters who are portrayed favourable (See the big sleep with Joe Cairo).

So we also read lesbian detective fiction.

George--how is the Nick and Nora OCR?  I want to get it just for that great cast!

I love the cast and I like the songs as presented on the CD.  It says in the liner notes that the score on the recording is really different than the score that was presented on the stage (all four performances).  They had extended musical sequences that went in and out of the dialog(ue) scenes and they felt that to try and duplicate that for a recording wouldn't really work.  So they reconceived the songs as individual songs (for the most part) and recorded them that way.

Hi, ladodgerjon.  Happy posting!

I have to tell you all what just happened less than hour ago.  I took the dogs for their walk and as we were walking down the sidewalk beside a busy street a car backfired.  Well, Bear, the terror of Tampa pulled his tail between his legs and looked like he'd been shot!  He then took off down the sidewalk,  pulling me & Brandi for all he was worth.  I swear I heard, "There's no place but HOME!" .  I was laughing my butt off the whole way.

I know I hurt his doggie pride by laughing but I couldn't help myself.   :)

My hero.  I don't know who protects who when we go for a walk.

Today has been a laugh filled one.  I received my copy of Babylon 5 bloopers that I won off of E-bay.  To many funny things to even start to tell about.

Regarding  pickles--I don't know what happened but I bit into a Checkers hamburger with a pickle that was so sour (or bad--still not sure) that it turned me totally off of pickles on sandwiches for the past year at least.  I always liked them before but now I either try to remember to say no pickles or I pick them off.  Shutter.

Glad all the cookies sold, George.  Had I been there, I would have bought one myself.

Thank you everyone so much for all the hotel suggestions!  I am sorry I couldn't respond to them before now... but school gets in the way of HHW sometimes (unfortunately).

I have tried a ton of what you guys suggested but have found that all of them are either sold out (who goes to NYC for New Year's Eve... oh wait :) ) or WAAAAAYYY out of my price range.

I phoned the tour group that is going from McGill (4 days, 3 nights for $298 including transport) and have decided that if I go - that is the way to do it. :)

This is the hotel they will be using - which IMHO looks very nice.  Has anyone heard anything about it? (oh and Noel... it is unfortunately right smack near Times Square.  But who needs to sleep anyway? :( )

Actually Noel, all things considered the trip is going to cost me $298 CDN (about $230 US) for transport and 2 nights stay at a hotel.  Which isn't that bad.  God bless Mcgill! :)

Hmm... they said it was near Times Square and the map showed it to be about two blocks east of it.  Hmmm....

I concur with the "mini unseemly journal" idea that ladodgerjon (Welcome to BK's Lair!!!) suggested he could easily write!

I suspect we'd read about more "do-for-me, buy-for-me, lift-me, carry-me" incidents between him and BK if such a journal were to be posted each day! (And Yes, that was most definitely an FG reference!).

TCB--Hmmm...maybe the WSMA did leave.  Now I'm going to have to go and look it up.

Ron--LOL!  I blush way too easily.

George--Thanks for the Nick and Nora report...you make a very good case for my going out and getting the cast recording.

I forgot about Paul Pine, Pogue.  Love John Evans/Howard Browne.  Also, I'm not at home to remember the names, but the professional detective and his amateur sidekick are really fun in my pal Dick Lochte's book Sleeping Dog and its sequel.

Hello fellow DR's, how were your days? Mine was alright...didn't do much...got to read Macbeth in English for a bit, and GUESS who I was cast as, Miss Maya? ;)

I don't know WHAT Jose is talking about. It's freezing in Virginia. I wore my big poofy winter coat all day, as the temperature outside was equal to the temperature inside.

Welcome to the cookie jar, ladodgerjon! What flavor are YOU? :)

I was going to say Nancy Drew and Sherlock Holmes, and obviously you beat me to it. So I am smiling and nodding in agreement.

Let it be known that I drive for an HOUR today and didn't kill anyone/put lives in danger/make my mom mad/make my passengers mad/have a nervous breakdown. That is so cool. 33 hours to go! (I have to get 40 hours in before i can get my license, 20 of which have to be nighttime.)

I reaaaaally want to go to Iceland. A huge resounding "ICELAND!!!" was sung out when I read that Emily. Iceland, Iceland, Iceland. Let's go.

And sorry I missed chat last night, my computer won't let me on chat. I open the chat page, and all of the links around the "chat box" are blank, with the red X's in them, and the "chat box" has a white square with a triangle, circle, and square in it. I tried, I really did, but it didn't work. Ah, there's always next week, I hope.

Welcome ladodgerjon and thanks for all the laughs I have had today since you joined our happy group.  :)

All went well at the bank.  We had to open a new checking account as a hold was put on the money in the old account.  Eventually we shall have our money returned and all will be well.  We do not expect to use the debit card again except for ATM withdrawals.  At least with a credit card you don’t have to pay the bill, and then get reimbursed.

DR Jrand --

Glad you got to watch Queen For A Day.  When I lived in Hollywood, it was not far north of Sunset & Vine (...it's Music City, Sunset & Vine...) and always wanted to go to see QFAD in person.  I didn't get to, but it was at that same theatre (renamed the Aquarius) that I saw my very first live, on-stage dangling participle on a male cast member in "Hair."  It was pretty daring stuff for its time!

Unfortunately, I looked closer, and it was no big deal.

The price is very good for hotel and bus (since I think the bus costs about $115Cdn and the hotel would cost at least 100Cdn a night, which is VERY generous).

But remember theatre tickets might add a lot to the mix.  Even if you have discounts (make sure you take PBOL ...).

Welcome, ladodgerjon!

Well... My day off has turned into a day of supreme laziness.  I don't think I've done anything really productive at all today.  Hmm.. -It is my day off after all... But still feeling a little "guilty" for basically doing nothing all day.

I did go out to dinner with my friend, Mark.  We went for some pretty yummy and spicy Thai food.  And for dessert, I headed to the ice cream place next door and got a sundae - coconut-brownie ice cream, hot fudge, crushed almonds and whipped cream!  -And the young woman who scooped my ice cream was very generous with the scoops!  I'm actually a little logey, but, hey, it sure was delicious!

DR Swishy - Well, it was kind of "warm" here in Richmond for part of the day - low 60's.  I did have a pullover on - and remember, I said it felt like Fall - not like Summer.  ;-)  *I've always liked a slight chill in the air.  And having the sun out also made it seem warmer.

DR Emily - That is a great rate!  Is McGill the school you go to?  *Just be aware that they set up some "access restrictions" in and around Times Square once the revellers start to disperse.  I remember one year trying to get my friend's apartment, but since I didn't have a hotel key or a New York city address/license, the police would not let me through the barricades until after 3:00AM!  And you wanna talk about cold!  *Are you planning on doing the whole New Year's Eve in Times Square experience as part of your trip?

I have broken bread with Dear BK on two occasions now, once in the company of Dear Reader Jose and Dear Reader Music Guy, and at another time with Dear Reader Jane.  New Dear Reader LADodgerJon has proposed committing a journal to this here site recounting his experiences having lunch with Dear BK each day whilst they toil away in some claustrophobic editing bay high atop a skyscraper in the Oaks of Sherman.

Far be it from me to dissuade a newbie from posting, especially one who, in his first post, demonstrated unparallelled modesty.  I must remind Dear Reader LADodger Jon, however, that this is a family site, and urge him to consider the propriety of committing to words the strange and unusual events he witnesses as he and Dear BK share their gustatory adventures.  Be advised:  if you thought the imbroglio with the pickle was strange, watch what happens when whipped cream is involved.

Got an e-mail from Jed Levin (son of Ira) with a question - I don't have the answer, so I'm hoping one of you does.  Here it is:

Bruce:

Hope you don't mind a question way out of left field. A friend and I are
trying to remember details (title, cast, etc.) of a TV movie from the 70s
that was filmed (possibly on video) in Central Park) and was a musical
version of "The Gift of the Magi." My friend remembers that the male lead had
a big 70s mustache, and he thinks there was a song called "I Can't Give You
Anything for Christmas." This may have only been broadcast locally. That's
about all we can rememember, and Google and a bunch of message boards are
coming up empty handed. Any memories of this? I thought the song title might
be the strongest thread, but I've had no luck, and if the title's off by just
a word it can make it very difficult to track.

Just thought you were someone worth trying this on. Thanks!

Jed Levin

According to imdb.com, there was another made for TV version with Debby Boone and John Rubinstein called "The Gift of the Magi (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0385722/)" (click on the title to see the very limited listing).  Imdb.com indicates that the 1978 Debby Boone version is also a musical, but the only non-cast credit is for the director Marc Daniels.  Hope this doesn't confuse the issue too much.

DR Jay - I wish I had my metabolism!  Well, at least the one I had pre-Australia.  I'm still working on the "Aussie 12" I put on, and with the holiday season upon us, the timing is just plain bad.  Not that I'm complaining, but...  However, I have not put back on all the weight I lost last year, so that's the sunny side of the situation.  Mainly, I just need to get my exercise routine back into routine.

I like TRIO too.  Unfortunately, when the cable system in Richmond reorganized the channel line-up, TRIO was moved to the "top tier" subscription level - ????  Ah, well.  At least I still have BBC America.

I saw The Missing this evening, Dear Readers.  The errant and truant Dear Reader Jason suggested that this film has been made before, and several other Dear Readers concurred.  I have no doubt that this film, indeed, has been made before, but, truth be told, I never saw it.  Therefore, I must say that I rather enjoyed this motion picture.  Cate Blanchette and Tommie Lee Jones are quite good, and the movie's narrative and pace kept me engrossed over the course of the entire film.  I thought Ron Howard and the writers did an excellent job of balancing the personal story between the two leads with the adventure/rescue element of the movie.

And am I alone in the perception that Tommie Lee Jones is a dead ringer for President Bush?

When the dust settled on the presidential election, Comedy Central (I think) had a sitcom called "That's My Bush!" starring Timothy Bottoms.  HE was absolutely a dead ringer for GWB.  Tongue-in-cheeck of course, but it was an uncanny impersonation.  He also played GWB in a serious made for TV movie called "DC 9/11: Time of Crisis."

Best of Vibes Jane. (...and we bought this little condominium: SS). Hope DR Ann's recital went well (It is so difficult to send vibes on time when it is always tomorrow here). Indeed Jed the artist does indeed reside at this address.

So, Ozzie, how did Ann's recital go yesterday?

Welcome back TCB - boots and all. I was going to call you a clever donkey but you would no doubt take that as a compliment when I really meant SA. Ann's recital went as expected but I think it is for her to post her feelings about it.
DR Jose: You are naturally fuzzy. Accept it along with your aussie 12.

Hello all!!!
I'm pleased to say that my recital went better than I'd expected.  Not a very big crowd, but an appreciative one.  And I got it recorded on CD, so that's good.  I can sleep well tonight...

DR Ann. The board is yours. It is only family here in Washington. How went the recital?

Now can we reverse the last two posts for the sake of continuity.

Well done Ann. You of course will be giving all Hainsies and Kimlets a copy of The Cd for Christmas (which we shall all copy and then sell the original on ebay in a few years time).

Ozzie:  I thought you were a day ahead of us.  Why are you asking Ann the question after she answers it?

Congtratulations Ann!  I am glad it went well.  You will, of course, be autographing our copies of your CD won't you?

I did give a vague indication about the recital in my post above but thought it would be unseemly to comment before Ann was able to give own views.

Forgot that bit about the autographs TCB. We should make even more on ebay with those. Now will there be cast recordings of those other Washingon events "Oliver" and "A Christmas Carol"? There be a market for a set of autographed Cds.

I'm pretty sure it has to do with that hole in the ozone layer, TCB.

That hole probably has an effect on the space-time continuum and any time Tommy gets too far ahead of himself, he gets jerked back a day and has to start catching up.

I wonder if I was asking about the next recital. Did you know there is another one Ann!  I feel like I am in "Merrily We Roll Along".

Good night.

TCB - I will be seeing Oliver on the 12th.  I very much look forward to seeing a DR in action.  I'm sure you will steal the show :)

btw, I will send copies of the Broadway portion of my recital if anyone actually wants it.

Sell instead of send Ann. I would love to hear you but you will need to get a fulltime job and work towards the postage to OZ. TCB will probably deliver it if you give him the fare. He is kind like that.
Goodnight Jane. May the good news continue for you.

Dinner time for Fosca & Magnus. Ah priorities!

DR Ann - Could you post your recital program?  -Forgive me if you had done this already.  I used to do a lot of accompanying, especially for vocalists.  I especially love the French repertoire - Faure, Chausson, Duparc, Ravel, Debussy, etc...

Sure, Jose.
There are two pieces that I doubt anyone would know, my voice teacher didn't even know them before I showed her.  So here's the rest -

Handel - Father Of Heav'n, from Judas Maccabaeus
Brahms - Treue Liebe
               Der Gang zum Liebchen
Simon - How Could I Ever Know
Sondheim - I Remember
                   Miller's Son
                   Children Will Listen

There ya go! :)

Even if we don't know Ann, we will research and pretend we knew all the time. Now to find out who the Sondheim person is. Didn't he write disco music?

Imagine my despair when I discovered this afternoon how completely wrong I was when I did "Losing My Mind" two years ago at one of my recitals!

I remember my grandmother singing me those songs Ann. I was only a kindergarten child in the 1700's though.
I must check and see if Joan Sutherland sings them on "Songs My Mother Taught Me". She may have had the same recital books.

Jed: Practise.
I love the droll Pet Shop Boys. I think Liza had lost hers!

Find me a lonely cave,
Remote from human kind,
Dark as the midnight grave,
And dismal as my mind.
There let me sigh my soul away,
And mourn at cruel death's delay.

Is this the one?  :D

There are some lovely early English songs.  It always struck me how the serious songs were truly serious in tone, while the "happier" ones tended to be on the naughty side.  All those "code" words and phrases.  I remember blushing in Song Lit class when some of the texts were "translated".

??????

Although, the first song I ever used for an audition was, "I Enjoy Being A Girl".  I just really liked the song and wanted to sing it.  I guess I was fated ever since... :P
