Well, you've read the notes, you know all about MTW and "boudain" and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're taking a moosical theater workshop.
-
And the word of the day is: PENTIMENTO!
-
Just heard that the lovelier than lovely Miss Petula Clark will be in town end of this week to do some sort of recording, and that she just might try to make it over to see Deceit next week. If she does, we'll all probably go out for dinner afterwards, and if she doesn't get to see the play, I think we're going to still try to have a meal. How wonderful it will be to see her again - she's one of my favorite people, and I haven't seen her since she was in town doing Sunset Blvd.
-
Wow. The site let me on and I have first post to boot!
I have to go to a class today-- I'm OK, Your Difficult. At least it gets me out of the office. :-\
-
Good morning, all! Last night's weird dream involved a wedding trip to London, where I saw a lot of friends and met John Barrowman. I think Sally Ann Triplett was in it as well. And there was a hot air balloon, and DR Jose was there, too, something about constellations and Cassiopiea and Orion.
DR Jose, I saw your post about Steve's rehearsal. Didn't he conduct a chart of mine at Christmas?
Today involves a trip to Toyland and the NYPL Theatre Collection, and then back here for more IRS prep.
TOD: I never wanted a dream house, perhaps a nice dream flat in London and a bigger apartment in Manhattan, perhaps on the mythical scale of all sitcoms set in New York.
-
And the word of the day is: PENTIMENTO!
Ah, yes, pentimento, that marvelous cream cheese spread flavored with red bell pepper, which has been set out and dried a bit so that the flavor is somewhat faded.
-
I wonder what it would be like to live in a yurt.
-
I really should get back to bed. The dogs got me up, because they wanted first breakfast and der B wanted to sleep in a bit. He's got a busy day ahead of him, what with grandlad sitting on his own (after conferring with their teachers). I shall be working, and enjoying myself at work.
Yes, I really should get back to bed.
-
If money were no object I would have living spaces (not necessarily houses) in more than one location. I would have an apartment in NY similar to a friend who lives on 64th & Central Park West (8 rooms, 3 bathrooms, a guest room, full kitchen, formal dining room, parking space, access to the roof, etc). I would also have a large flat in London (no parking space though). I would have a small house in Normandy, probably in Honfleur or somewhere near. I would have a nice small apartment in San Francisco (we haven't been to SF since 1999 and I would love to get back) and I would have a small house on one of the islands of Hawaii.
And now I must begin work after I wash my oatmeal bowl.
-
Re: last night's COURTING ALEX (no spoilers).
The more I watch the show, the more I just love it. DR MattH, you probably still wouldn't like it. But it just makes me smile. I'm not sure how hilarious it is. But I just like the chemistry between Jenna Elfman and former Ed guy. And their banter is cute and funny. Definitely a chick show. But I'm not complaining.

MEDIUM MAJOR SPOILERS FROM LAST NIGHT'S SHOW.

Last night MattH wrote:
I thought somehow Allison was going to be with the fake Joe at the end instead of the real Joe.
The descriptions of the episode had made it sound as if Allison was going to lose her clairvoyance altogether, but that wasn't the case at all.
I also guess the beginning wasn't that clear to me. Because I also wondered if Alison was going to see fake Joe again. I think the fact that that episode was when she hit her head was what confused me. The promos for the show showed her going crazy with fakeJoe. But really none of that happened (which is stuipid if you ask me, i mean why promo that- very misleading).
I didn't think she was going to lose her ability. But I wasn't satisfied with the end. They didn't show us what happened. So they man took them to the desert. And I guess they found the bodies. Then what happened to the man? What happened to his wife? And what was the end with alison in bed? There was just something missing.
I loved the show up until the man freaked out and called his wife Jade. I don't know what i wanted to happen. I guess it would have felt more satisfying for them to find some way to help him.
It was very interesting though how alison had the visions while he was in the MRI. ANd the reasons she got the good vibes from him at the store. And also the whole thing with his wife. That part was all excellent, unpredictable and original.
-
I like olives stuffed with pentimentos.
(And Amazon has informed me that my copy of JULIA is on its way! Now, if they would only release AGATHA on DVD, life would be a dream.)
-
TOD:
I am currently enamored of HGTV's 2006 Dream House (http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/dream_home/).
But other than that, I would like a house that's up somewhere along the Hudson. Or a ranch in Montanna. Gimme them wide open spaces!
-
I would love a Frank Lloyd Wright style house in a wooded area with a creek and a nice view, but close to the city.
-
A big Victorian with three floors, a wrap around covered porch a turret and a fireplace in every room. set in the center of five acres of land with only about 2 1/2 acres cleared, the perimeter all wooded.
-
I think we've come pretty close to our dreamhouse here in Kentucky. But if money were no object, I would love to have a dreamhouse right in the heart of London in the West End and within walking distance of Theatreland. Preferably on the North Bank with a view of the Thames and near some green park. Something near St. James Park would be great. It would have enough bedrooms to accommodate the occasional visitors.

Good morning!
Beautiful if cold day here with no end in sight to the colder temperatures or blue skies (an Irving Berlin reference).

Re MEDIUM:
spoiler- - - - - -
I wasn't unhappy with the conclusion. I think what was going to happen with the man was obvious and needed no explanation. There is no statute of limitations on murder, and while we don't know if his lawyer would try an insanity defense or if he'd just take his punishment, well, that's another story. We got the explanations to Allison's visions, and that's inevitably what MEDIUM is about.
The fake family, however, is still haunting, and I'm wondering if we've seen the last of them, or the last of the "peanut," as DR TPunk has speculated. I hope not. They've got to mean something.
-
Good Morning!
(from last night's late night posts)
DR DakotaCelt - Thank you. <blush>
-
(still from last night's posts)
DR Jason - You're welcome.
:)
-
I forgot to mention yesterday that I have been to Television City once in my life. We went to LA in the 1960s, and we went to Art Linkletter's House Party. My uncle was even chosen as an audience participant for one of Art's audience participation sequences. He won an electric skillet for his participation.

As promised library pix.
-
Loved the photos posted last night by various DRs - the aqua photos and the ones from DAMN YANKEES. Thanks for those!
-
I woke up still feeling under the weather. Sigh... I guess going to the gym is out again today. I just wouldn't want to risk it. ;)
-
That's a very inviting looking library. I'm sure you're enjoying it.

Well, it had to happen sometime. TOnight, at the 9:30 time slot, there will be FOUR shows that I regularly watching facing off against one another: SUPERNATURAL, HOUSE, SCRUBS, and ABC's special broadcast of CRUMBS.
So, those of you who like CRUMBS, don't forget that ABC is giving it a trial in this time slot tonight at 9:30 EST. It will also be on Thursday at 9:30 in its regular spot.
-
Another angle
-
And on to today...
Good Morning!
The second day after a show closing is always harder than the first one. -I've been reading similar accounts of recovering after running a marathon. In any case... Even though I was in bed by midnight, I didn't really wake myself until around 10:30 this morning. And I'm still feeling a bit logey.
Thankfully, the sun is out, and having the sun shine through the windows here is always a good thing. I've just had my morning bowl of oatmeal, and... Now I just need to decide what to do with the rest of my day. I'm actually thinking of heading to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. I haven't been there in years. -And I was just living four blocks away from it! It's a nice museum, and it's always nice ooh-ing and aah-ing over their Faberge Egg collection. And then I can walk over to Carytown for some window shopping and a late lunch. Then I think I'm heading over to Steve's for dinner before I head back up to Fairfax tonight. As always, we shall see...
-
Yes, a book by a cozy fire...even if it is propane.
-
Stairs leading into library.
-
DR Pogue - Thatsa lotta books!
:)
Beautiful room.
-
Like others, I'm assuming a dream home would also come with landscapers and yard people to keep it up. Otherwise, I'd want a condo or apartment that didn't involve outside maintenance.
With that in mind, I'd have a ranch style home in Hawaii. I'd like the tropical weather and a sense of space. I love the beach, also. In the home would be a genuine home theater with stadium seating and a large screen (on the order of 110") with a front projection system.
-
Tewkesbury and Mosby the Great Ghost, crapped out after a hard day of doing nothing.
-
Good morning, all!
Hmmm... I've never been to London, but I've always been fascinated with constellations. I was on quite the astronomy kick when I was in middle school.
And Steve played one of your charts at Christmas. The Men's Chorus conducor, Tim, had baton duty.
-
So your library is in the basement? It's a very large room regardless.
-
Jose, that's just the official library. Somewhere between 60-70 boxes. There is a whole wall and a half of shelves going into my office. That's another twenty/twenty-five boxes more. Somewhere between 5,000 and 6,000 books. A lot of those shelves are double-stacked with duplicate editions or old editions of books I've upgraded. I actually sold some books before I left and have weeded out a box or two more, I don't think I really want and will be getting rid off. After all, I've got to have some room to buy more!
There are still a few things to be done. Pictures (movie posters mostly) to be hung, etc. If you look to the left of the library stairs picture, you can sorta make out my Gunga Din poster.
-
Hmm... I wonder if DR elmore would ever post a pic of his library.
;)
-
DR Jennifer, have you watched HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER? If you're enjoying COURTING ALEX this much, I'd think HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER might also be a show you might enjoy, especially lately with more romantic things going on.
But shows are perfectly pleasant but just not my cup of tea. However, I've stayed with HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER because I like the cast and there's nothing else on as I wait for '24' to come on.
-
Matth, it's the lower lever of the house, not really a basement...or what one would call a finished walk-out basement. There are also three bedrooms and a bath on this level. Behind the library is the mechanics room of the house where water-heaters and duct work are. But it is also very finished and huge. There'll be a gym and a crafts room in that area.
-
As for the Topic of the Day...
I'd like a house right in the middle of Central Park. Right in the middle of the Reservoir. My own private island as it were. Surrounded by the Park and the City. But seriously...
A loft in SoHo. A penthouse on Central Park West and/or Central Park East. And a well-appointed one bedroom in the midst of the theatre district so that I could freshen up between shows.
:)
-
But after visiting Australia a few years ago...
A penthouse overlooking Sydney Harbor. A standing reservation at the Crown in Melbourne. And I wouldn't mind having DR Tomovoz, Colin and Magnus and Fosca as neighbors either in Upper Beaconsfield.
:)
-
DR Charles... I want your library in my Victorian dreamhouse!!
A library witha fireplace... ah that is a dream home. Congratulations!
-
I'm up, I'm up. Lovely library photographs.
Let's have descriptions of the dream homes or apartments - how many rooms, what sort of furniture and decor, etc. You can do it.
Must get ready quickly and be on my way to LACC, because I have to arrange for a parking pass and other stuff before the workshop begins. The best news? We're in the big theater - that will be a lot of fun.
-
DR Jason... I love your aquarium pictures. I was fondly reminded of my one and only trip there, more than 20 years ago. My friend and I were walking the "freedom trail" and it suddenly started to rain. We were right by the aquarium, which we had had no intention of visiting, but figured it was better than getting soaked so in we went. We loved it so much we spent the rest of the day there even though the storm quickly passed.

Tewkesbury and Mosby the Great Ghost, crapped out after a hard day of doing nothing.
Everyone should have a specialty!
-
~~~Excellent First Day of School Vibes~~~~
to BK
-
Do students give Apples to their Teachers?
Have a great first day at LACC, BK!
-
Of course, if money were no object, I, like others, would have apartments in cities that I love visiting: NYC, San Francisco. I'd say London, but I haven't made it there yet, but I suspect I'll love it when I do go.
-
Today is Fruitcake Toss Day!
(Exactly how that fruitcake should be tossed, whether manually or otherwise, is not specified.)
-
As can be seen to some extent in the library pictures, I love the mission/craftsman style. Simple, hardy, strong, well-made furniture. I have the stuff all through the house and I would have even more in a dream home.
-
~~~Health Vibes~~~ to MattH's fella
Thank you, DR Vixmom. Listening to his voice getting progressively raspier and hearing a hacking cough right near the end of our conversation, I suspect he's in the grip of the gryppe!
One of those things that's going to have to run its course, I guess. And I appreciated that he didn't want us to get together until he knew for sure how contagious he was going to be. But the idea of not seeing him this week is not much fun though, of course, necessary. I'd rather he take care of himself, of course.
-
And now, here's something clever. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfODSPIYwpQ)
-
I've been tossing fruitcakes for years. Immediately when I am given one as a gift, I toss it right in the garbage. I can't STAND the things.
-
Guess I'll go start prepping lunch now.
WBBL.
-
Good First Day Vibes - make them sing Good Morning, Miss Crabtree.
-
WOW!!
Great photos from the aquarium!
Great DAMN photos! What fun it looks like everyone is having!
AND finally great photos from the CP Library!
Thanks to all!! It was like a trip around the HHW world in a few minutes!
-
DR MATTHEW - I can't find my HELLO DOLLY libretto - and it's T/W not MTI so DRJASON can't look it up.
I checked my published script of THE MATCHMAKER and can't find it, although I am sure it's there.
DR MATTHEW is looking for a specific line from HELLO,DOLLY....when Dolly says: "That's the way it's done in New York, dinner first and [what word goes here] later."
-
Page Three Dream house Dance. :o

DR JRand - As for a "rag bag" from Damn Yankees.... Trust me, when Martin Pakledinaz is your costume designer, you don't have "rags". ;)
-
Jose, at your leisure, e-mail me a list of "don't-do" audition songs, and also songs that the current crop of casting people seem to respond to. Thanks. Anyone else with song suggestions, e-mail me as well.
-
I shall now be on my way to LACC for the musical theater workshop (MTW) and then to my lunch/meeting, after which I shall return.
-
Don't do nothing from FOOTLOOSE even if you starred in it at your high school!
-
PIPPIN has songs that I love to hear at auditions!

Actually, I kind of like "Mama Says".

I've been tossing fruitcakes for years. Immediately when I am given one as a gift, I toss it right in the garbage. I can't STAND the things.
Next time toss it to your local food pantry. Many churches have these. That's where any extra unopened Christamas goodies, Halloween candy, Easter candy etc go when found laying around our house. Somebody may be grateful to have it. ;)

The poor didn't want this one.

Sad news about Jean Byron, DRMBARNUM. I remember her FIRST on THE MANY LOVES OF DOBIE GILLIS. She and William Schallert played professors at the college Dobie attended. The next thing I knew, they were man & wife on THE PATTY DUKE SHOW!

Last night's "Surface":
SPOILER
SPOILER
Does anyone else watch this show? Just curious. Last night's "season finale" was quite interesting...lots of suspense...some a bit disaster-epic-stale, IMO...but not too bad for a TV series.
I think the final line -- something about it being "a whole new world" -- could point to some fascinating possibilities for the new season (should we be fortunate enough to get one). "Surface" airs, also, on Sci-Fi, and it may yet turn out that NBC airs new shows on Sci-Fi a la "Stargate" and "Battlestar Galactica"...but that's a hunch...not based on anything I've read or heard.
There are some issues in this show that beg for answers -- how much of what happened has been deliberately set in motion -- how much was expected -- what was it done "for" -- where did that huge shaft in the underground facility lead to -- and on and on and on?
-
Oh, I had forgotten she was on DOBIE GILLIS! I have heard she had a mouth like a truck driver! LOL!
I am sure she was a lot of fun!
This calls to mind a line I believe was in "Hannah and Her Sisters":
Maureen O'Sullivan's character said: "I'm just a boozy old broad with...."
But I can't recall what follows "with"....

MAJOR MEDIUM SPOILERS from last night's show.
.
.
.
MORE MEDIUM SPOILERSI agree, I also really liked last night's episode but thought it had not much to do with the commercials. What was even the point of having the alternate family, I guess to show that she really needed the MRI. Will there be more with the peanut? And I am convinced but Tom doesn't agree that in the "faux" family, the youngest daughter was the same as in her actual family.
Yeah as I said it bothered me that they played that promo so much it had nothing to do with the show.
I agree with Rodzinski, I really think the youngest daughter was the same. Although it was difficult to tell. The oldest daughter was obviously different. The middle one I thought actually looked like the real one but wasn't. But the youngest one really looked like the real one.
And after thinking more about it, I'm glad with the way it ended. At first I was thinking, he's a totally different person, just let it go. But if the thoughts were there in the MRI for her to pick up on, they were still a part of him deep down. And when the wife said that he hated the desert and stayed away, it made me think that maybe the repression of his former life was more psychological than physiological. What if the memories or urges had come back to him some time down the line and he killed his wife and others... all in all a good episode, but I hope that they resolve some of the unresolved peanut questions at some point in the future.
I know that we are supposed to focus on Alison. But I guess it just bothered me that the guy had no memory of what happened, and he was such a good person now that he was willing to help the police. I sort of wanted to know whta would happen with him.
It would have been interesting if the oldest daughter had a peanut too. And I also wonder if they will address that issue again.
-
DR MattH, there is also Criminal Minds at 9pm today (moved because of the Grammys tomorrow).
-
Hmmmm...hopefully we don't all have this much trouble with our lines when we get cast in a play!
Yes DRMBARNUM....Patty Duke mentioned in her autobiography that Jean liked to curse like a sailor when things were going badly.
-
I am listening to the new SWEENEY TODD recording. Sometimes, the instrumentation is eerily like that of the Hooterville Volunteer Fire Department Marching Band. I wonder how they would have done with SWEENEY?
-
Eva Gabor as Mrs. Lovett.
Eddie Albert as Sweeny Todd himself.
Tom Lester as Tobias.
Pat Bustrum as Pirelli.
Sid Melton as Antony.
Mary Grace Canfield as Joanna.
Frank Cady as Judge Turpin.
Hank Patterson as the Beadle.
Barbara Pepper alternates with Fran Ryan as the Old Beggar Lady.
Interesting concept.

Eva Gabor as Mrs. Lovett.

Pogue, don't know if it is intentional, but the rug in your library looks almost like a reflection of the shelves of books. It's a neat effect.

My "Dream Home" is a house that is PAID FOR!
I live in my dream house!
-
Shortly after I first started working here at the library, we got a book called "Authentic Small Houses of the Twenties (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0486254062/sr=1-1/qid=1139340166/ref=pd_bbs_1/002-7701208-5864855?%5Fencoding=UTF8)." They had a house plan in that that I just loved. It's made of brick and has an octagonal staircase on the left side going up to the second floor. It's just a sweet little house. I photocopied the page and have it at home stuffed in a box somewhere.
-
And the word of the day is: PENTIMENTO!
Pentimento (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000065DVR/sr=1-4/qid=1139337315/ref=pd_bbs_4/002-7701208-5864855?%5Fencoding=UTF8) is also a CD by Jessica Molasky, who is married to John Pizzarelli. So, here's the Pentimento Page Four Dance!!

Elmore, I was in London in my dreams last night, too, but unfortunately you weren't. I was driving around with some nutcase girl who had hitchhiked (or something--can't really recall) with me. In my dream, they had just changed to right-side-of-the-road driving in the UK, and it was wreaking havoc. :)
I can tell you some "no-no's" for auditions (not necessarily songs--but these are all from personal experience):
1. Do not bring a lyric sheet of a song no one has heard of, with not even chord changes, and expect the accompanist to "intuit" how it goes. :)
2. Do not bring 8x10 reductions of conductor's scores (more often than not handwritten, with "on the road" corrections scratched into them), especially encased in highly reflective "sheet protectors," and then expect the accompanist to magically sight-read the miniscule piano part from betwixt and between the glares. :)
3. Do not bring "Glitter and Be Gay" and cut it merciliessly to about 30 seconds with absolutely no sense to your edits, and then, approximately a nanosecond before you begin singing, turn to the accompanist and say, "Oh, I forgot--can you transpose this down a third?" :)
I'll think of more later, I'm sure I will. ;)
-
Hmm... I wonder if DR elmore would ever post a pic of his library.
;)
Nope!
-
In JRB land, 2 songs that have worked well for the many singers I've done "cattle call" auditions with:
Climbing Uphill from Last 5 Years
The Old Red Hills of Home from Parade
In JRB land, 1 song that is done way too much at auditions IMHO:
Stars and the Moon from Songs for a New World

I have heard she had a mouth like a truck driver! LOL!
I like her already!

PENTIMENTO is also a great memoir by Lillian Hellman
-
Did someone already mention that Pentimento is the name of the now discredited Lillian Hellman piece that was the source for the film Julia. There was just a great op-ed piece in the paper the other day about it, with reference to the James Frey controversy, with the great quote from someone (can't remember, brain death--the one who was the other character in the Hamlisch show a few years ago about Hellman) saying "Every word in that book is a lie, including 'and' and 'the'."
-
LOL, Elmore. ;D
-
Mary McCarthy, maybe?
-
And of course in synchronicity land, Jessica sang "Stars and the Moon," co-starring with my close personal friend Brooks Ashmanskas. ;)
-
I bought the PINAFORE cd you suggested DRELMORE. I anxiously await its arrival!
-
Never mind the why and wherefore.
-
I did PINAFORE in undergraduate school.
-
I did PINAFORE in undergraduate school.
I wore a pinafore in elementary school
-
Rodzinski, yeah, we are aware that the rugs reflects the shelving, but also picks up most of the colours in the room.

The quote is Mary McCarthy's. Actually, "Julia" is one of the segments in PENTIMENTO.

Had a nice lunch with (South Beach) George who is looking to move back to this part of the state...Salem or Portland. This is news that made me very pleased. Currently he lives on the beach (South Beach) which is a good 3 hours from here....so we don't get to see each other very often.

Did anybody else see Harrick Connick Jr and Kelli O'Hara on the Today show this morning?
Apparently the clip is online (click on the yellow Harry Connick video button):
http://msnbc.msn.com/id/3032633/
I saw it this morning and thought it was really bad. Apparently they don't sing it this way in the show (thank goodness). But I definitely think they should have sang it the way they sing it in the show!
-
I don't think anyone here watches 7TH HEAVEN, but Michael Feinstein was on it last night. He had a huge part, as a music teacher at Ruthie's school. And he got to sing and play piano (a lot). He was the music teacher in charge of detention, and he taught the students all about music history, and sang quite a few songs (many Gershwin). It was really educational and quite impressive.

I did PINAFORE in undergraduate school.
I wore a pinafore in elementary school
and Benjamin Kritzer looked under girls pinafores when he was in elementary school ;)
-
A quick hello to all and especially the sundried! We are off to see "Narnia" this morning. And I have yet to even check the TOTD.
-
I wore a pinafore in elementary school
I went to elementary school.
-
Elementary School. Is that where you learn "What's on"?
-
JULIA has just arrived at my desk. I recall being quite taken by the two actresses who played the younger Lillian and Julia. Lisa Pelikan went on to do some stage work and has had a steady if not completely stellar television career. Susan Jones went on to play such roles as Slave Girl #2, Bald Subhumanoid and Alley Rape Victim. Such is the fortunes of show biz, I guess.
-
DR MattH, there is also Criminal Minds at 9pm today (moved because of the Grammys tomorrow).
I didn't think about it because the Duke-North Carolina basketball game is being broadcast on our local CBS affiliate instead of CRIMINAL MINDS and LOVE MONKEY. The station is showing them in the early morning hours, and I've set the DVR to record LOVE MONKEY beginning at 4:07 a.m!
-
I spent the afternoon with several fine shows and a film. First up was last night's CSI: MIAMI. Not as dramatic as I was expecting nor as dramatic as was described in this week's TV GUIDE.
-
Next, I watched BEING JULIA which earned star Annette Bening an Oscar nomination last year. It's a tour de force for her as a middle aged actress who treats her real life as if she were still on stage with rehearsed speeches and lines from plays which she uses in most situations of her life.
The plot is pretty routine, but Bening certainly acted the part to the teeth. It was an entertaining 1 3/4 hours.
-
Finished up the afternoon with a couple more CSI eipsodes from the season five DVD set. Very entertaining.
-
Right now the DVD recorder is burning a DVD of GROUNDHOG DAY which HBO broadcast in high definition the other day. I only had the film on laserdisc, and I thought this would be a cheap way to have it on a good quality DVD and not pay for the commercial issue.
-
We must of course have photos of the Petula Clark soiree!
-
Heading down now to get some cleaning done and then on to a marathon night of network TV.
WBBL.

Page Five Nemo Dance!!!

I believe I saw tonight's LOVE MONKEY last night. Although it isn't the one it says in my tv. In my tv it says something about tom working with an ex-girlfriend. But the show I saw was about wayne and whether or not to do a video. It was a really good episode.

Page Five Nemo Dance!!!
Before you posted your Page Five Nemo Dance, I was getting my own Page Five dance ready: a Page Five Petula Dance (from 1944!), but I decided to post in anyway ;):

Good Evening!
Greetings from Steve's. Just making a brief pit stop here before heading back up north in a few hours.
That's all for now.
Laters...
-
BK, I guess Ms. Clark will be making her appearance out there before I make mine and I shall not have the pleasure. Timing, timing...It's everything, alas!
-
Tuesday evening greetings! Oh, my, it was hard to come back to work after a lovely 3-day weekend. And it's been wild and crazy here today - we're short-staffed and the bottom-feeders are quite aggressive.
-
Back from my busy day. Got a message from my person at Disney, asking for a word change in my VO - so I'm happy I didn't turn in the cuts yesterday. Unfortunately, my person didn't know this word was a promo no-no at Disney - but she was viewing somebody else's promo for something, and the offending word was uttered and the powers that be said, "No, we don't ever use that word." The offending word that must be changed? "Fun."
Had a very productive day. The first day of the workshop was fun - I just spoke for an hour, which went by a lot slower than I thought it would, or I would have planned more to say. On Thursday, they have to come in with their song choices, which we'll discuss. Then the following Tuesday, our pianist will come and play them through their songs, and I'll critique and give notes. The pianist will also play their song to tape so they can rehearse and work with it. I'm also going to use the song I Remember on Thursday, to show how a lyric can be interpreted quite differently by four singers - Bernadette, Liz Callaway, that girl from Sound of Music who did the original Evening Primrose, and one other to be determined (suggestions welcome, but it should be different, interpretation-wise from the above). It's such an evocative lyric, with endless colors and ways to play the intention of the song which, in Evening Primrose, is very specific.
-
As promised library pix.
Chuck, the library is awesome!
-
Hello all. Everything is on schedule...still. It's amazing but true. The one small problem is I'm exhausted and still have tons to pack. I don't HAVE to be out of the old house, but having to come back and get "the rest of the stuff" is not my idea of a good time. So, I'm going to try to go through the house and prioritize...what HAS to be moved by the movers and what do I have to pack so they can move it. I've already taken several loads of boxes over to the house and they cleaned today....it smells so nice in there..Murphy's Oil Soap is a great scent.
-
As for the TOD, I've been working in my dream house since Wednesday. I can't wait to live there!!!
-
CP Great Library! Thanks for sharing the photos.
-
As for the Topic of the Day...
:)
What would you be doing between shows that would require you to freshen up, Jose??? Just asking.
-
Maybe if I go get some chocolate I may get interested in packing up the kitchen. Tomorrow is the first day in the past 8 or 9 days that I don't have to be somewhere before 8:00 am. So maybe chocolate would give me a second wind....it's worth a try.
-
Good Evening! Again!
Still at Steve's. Steve ended up cooking up some dinner/snack - mashed potatoes and Italian sausages. Meat and potatoes. Very tasty.
And since "American Idol" is on tonight, I'm gonna hang out here for a bit longer and watch that with him, then make the trek back north.
-
Finding your dreamhouse is one thing. Getting the State of California to sell you the Hearst Castle is another.
-
OH!
And a "That's Cool!" Thank You to whomever posted the link to the UK Honda Civic ad. Very cool! Steve is going to send it to his choral director. ;)
http://www.honda.co.uk/civic/
-
What would you be doing between shows that would require you to freshen up, Jose??? Just asking.
Well, playing an 88-key keyboard with my hands and keeping track of four foot pedals (volume, damper, program change and modulation) can cause one to work up quite a sweat.
;)
And between-show naps are always a nice thing too.
-
....I'm also going to use the song I Remember on Thursday, to show how a lyric can be interpreted quite differently by four singers - Bernadette, Liz Callaway, that girl from Sound of Music who did the original Evening Primrose, and one other to be determined (suggestions welcome, but it should be different, interpretation-wise from the above). It's such an evocative lyric, with endless colors and ways to play the intention of the song which, in Evening Primrose, is very specific.
David Kernan (a man) sang it in Side By Side By Sondheim, but for some jazzy versions, Richard Rodney Bennett recorded it on "A Different Side of Sondheim (http://www.sondheimguide.com/collect.html#Bennett1)," Jackie Cain and Roy Kral sang it on "A Stephen Sondheim Collection (http://www.sondheimguide.com/collect.html#Cain1)" and Dianne Reeves recorded it as "I Remember Sky" on her 1991 CD "I Remember (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000005HEQ/sr=1-4/qid=1139359863/ref=pd_bbs_4/002-7701208-5864855?%5Fencoding=UTF8)." I have the first two recordings on CD at home, but not the Dianne Reeves at all. I could e-mail you MP3s if you want.
I had read that Sondheim didn't like Richard Rodney Bennett's album but he was, of course, on the cover of Cain and Kral's recording, so he must have liked what they did.
-
I'll give those a listen and I know I have a couple of others. Isn't there an Evening Primrose on The Frogs CD?
-
Oh, and it's Charmian Carr - couldn't remember her name.
-
I'll give those a listen and I know I have a couple of others. Isn't there an Evening Primrose on The Frogs CD?
Yup. The recording has Neil Patrick Harris and Theresa McCarthy.
-
In JRB land, 2 songs that have worked well for the many singers I've done "cattle call" auditions with:
Climbing Uphill from Last 5 Years
The Old Red Hills of Home from Parade
In JRB land, 1 song that is done way too much at auditions IMHO:
Stars and the Moon from Songs for a New World
Hmm...
In my experience, "The Old Red Hills of Home" is usually beyond the technical and musical capabilities of the person choosing to sing it.
Most singers I've played it for think the piece is in "2" or "4". It's in "3". -Thank you "hemiola". And then when the song does go into 4/4, all bets are off.
Pianistically speaking, it's also a bit thorny. -Especially in the 4/4 section with those running thirds. And if the piano in the audition room doesn't have a decent action, then even the opening figure can be difficult to "sound".
However, when it's done well, it can be a true highlight of an audition day.
*And I also sort of laugh - to myself, of course - when a guy comes to the piano and wants the song "a little faster than normal". Those thirds in sixteenths are already fast enough when played at "normal" speed. ;)
-
I'll give those a listen and I know I have a couple of others.
So...does this mean that you have these or do you want/need me to send you the MP3s? I just want to be sure I'm not missing anything.
-
I need MP3s on I Remember by Bernadette and Theresa McCarthy and Dianne Reeves. Please send to haineshisway@gmail.com
-
I need MP3s on I Remember by Bernadette and Theresa McCarthy and Dianne Reeves. Please send to haineshisway@gmail.com
I can do that tonight. I personally don't own the Dianne Reeves version, but I can get it at one of the branch libraries close to where I work...unless someone checks it out within the next few hours. I do own the other two versions.
-
I also have Robert Clary's version on his CD, "Louis Lebeau Remembers Cole Porter, Not Stephen Sondheim (But Sings Their Songs Anyway)." ;)
-
Watching Liza Minnelli on ACTORS STUDIO.
My sister asked me if I could work tomorrow, so I said yes. Hmmm.....maybe something exciting will happen at WOW.
-
American Idol was okay tonight. Tomorrow we will see them in Hollywood. I know most viewers prefer the auditions. But personally I would rather see a show with just all the winners. So Hollywood are my favorite shows.
There was one girl tonight (the blonde with a black streak who worked for challenged old people). I really liked her and was disappointed that the judges thought she was very good, but not good enough to go through. :(
-
Hi Jane and Danise!
-
BK, there is an Evening Primrose on the original FROGS CD release (The one before it became a Broadway show). The Lovely wife was playing it in the car the other day.
TCB, yeah...the library's kinda special. I'll be glad when the bookcases in the office are up and all the books are out.
-
Hi Gang!
I guess you could say that since I own this house clear and free that I do have what others would wish for. Still it’s not a dream home by a long shot. I will buy something else when I hit the lotto.
Maybe a couple of houses around the country--one near NYC, another out west someplace, maybe London. I'd have to think about it.
I'd give anything to have a library like you do, DR Charles Pogue. I remember the pictures of BK's library as well. Sigh. ;)
I’m happy because I received my income tax return! ;D When I checked my bank balance tonight, there it was! It’s a comfort to know I have a nice little pile of money to fall back on in case something goes wrong with the surgery and I have to be out longer then I thought. Not that I’m worried about anything going wrong. Still, I will be very glad when I come home from the hospital.
They say we might go down into the lower 30’s on Friday. Can you say COLD?????
The class today was ok. It got me out of the office and that was the best part.
Oh, and I beg to differ with DR Elmore. You could not have possibly been in London last night because you were in NY. Times Square to be exact. At least that’s where you were in my dream. :)
Oh, and I also happen to like fruitcake so you can toss some my way as well!
Have a wonderful evening all!
-
Hi Jennifer and Jane!
-
Is this a slow news day here at haineshisway.com? You'd think it was Souper Bowl Sunday - well, it's not, so let's get off our complacent butt cheeks and get some postin' goin' on.
-
Busy night at work, oddly....
Will try and catch up posts a bit later....
-
Hi Jennifer. I agree you might like HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, for a different reason than Matt H. Keith and I enjoy it and we found last night’s episode very funny.
-
I'm back from work, and waiting for der B to return from his ladsitting duties.
Wasn't that exciting news!
-
Hi Danise. Sorry I was catching up while you were posting and I missed you. :(
-
CP I enjoyed the photos of your library. Thank you for sharing.
-
I have not watched AMERICAN IDOL, but I did just order the CD of INDIAN IDOL 2. I very much enjoyed the first cd.
-
I've not caught up yet but Judy Collins also sang "I Remember" - same album as "Green Finch and Linnet bird".
Geraldine Turner's Sondheim album also has the song as does Cleo Laine's.
-
I have not watched AMERICAN IDOL, but I did just order the CD of INDIAN IDOL 2. I very much enjoyed the first cd.
Why does this not surprise me?

I thought boudain was soemthing to wear!

So there is NO fun on the Disney Channel? Who knew?

I thought boudain was soemthing to wear!
Wasn't Carrie's prom gown taffeta and boudain?
-
Wasn't Carrie's prom gown taffeta and boudain?
I thought it was bodacious!
-
Today's strange but true fact o' the day: someone in Pakistan found my Farmer article because they were searching for the syndicated late 50s Lloyd Nolan series Special Agent 7. Lloyd was always huge in Pakistan, as I'm sure you all knew.
-
He's big EVERYWHERE!
-
Wasn't Carrie's prom gown taffeta and boudain?
Could be.... 8)
-
I thought it was bodacious!
No, the Grand Tetons are Bodacious....or something like that. :o
-
If today was Judy Garland's birthday she would be 84. But it's not so she isn't.
-
Cherry KitKats are Bodelicious!
-
The IRS website says: "There is a problem with your refund." So I don't know when my money will be around.
If you go to www.irs.gov and click on Where's My Refund, you can find out the answer....you MUST know your filing status, your social security number, and the dollar amount of your refund.
-
We have a nice grouping of people here at haineshisway.com. Now, if only the nice grouping of people would make some nice grouping of postings.
-
Bodelicious was a guitar player.
-
No....wait....
-
I read CENTER SQUARE a "bio" of Paul Lynde today. It was very depressing, besides being badly written.
-
Peter Marshall: What did the Pope get for his birthday?
Paul Lynde: Johnny Olsen, tell the Pope what he's won!
-
MR BK did you ever reveal which episodes of the DICK VAN DYKE show you saw being filmed?
-
Both DRS GINNY & DAKOTA CELT said the libraries were hopping today....next week we will be able to get a library report from DRJED as well.
-
DR GEORGE can give us the Library administration report.
-
I think in London there is a statue of Bodelicious in her chariot.
-
Page Seven Balm in Gilead Dance....did this show about 20 years ago. I am on the left in the sport coat....my best friend Marika is front and center! ;D
-
I think in London there is a statue of Bodelicious in her chariot.
I hope she's lit at night! ;D
-
I went to see "The Chronicles of Nardia" this morning. I enjoyed it a lot. Good fun.

Here's a lovely post. A Soupy Sales LP. SPY WITH A PIE
(http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b52/Maclord/soupy.jpg)
I HAVE that album! Va whooo waaaaa.....
-
Contains the enjoyable song, "Soupy of the Secret Service." I haven't heard it said, but I think Soupy is a good singer. He has a kind of cool, effortless charm.
-
And he can't be blamed (entirely) for the 1970's fiasco of the syndicated WHAT'S MY LINE.... entirely....
-
I have only the vaguest of memories of the Soupy Sales Show. Perhaps they are implanted memories and not mine at all.
-
I have only the vaguest of memories of the Soupy Sales Show. Perhaps they are implanted memories and not mine at all.
Do you remember walking toward the light and the sound of a voice? :P
-
Quick, Watson, page eight.
I only saw one episode of Dick Van Dyke being shot, and I really doubt I'd remember it.
Do any of you wise folks know if there's a list of Warner Bros. soundtracks that were on LP? If so, point me to it.
-
Well...time for a shower and the choosing of the tasteful outfit for tomorrow.
-
I hope she's lit at night! ;D
I used to be lit at night!
-
Soupy Sales recorded a version of "Spanish Flea" - lyrics by a close personal friend of BK.
-
I used to be lit at night!
I guess it's difficult to find any lighting that is "kind" these days/nights.

Tonight I watched EBB TIDE, courtesy JMK. As cracked-up crazy as I hoped it would be. Definitely not enough Frances Farmer, no doubt about that. It's as if her character was written into some other movie, but she stowed along on the wrong boat and ended up in the wrong movie. I mean she has zero reason for existing in this film. Zero!
Next theory I want to advance is that Lloyd Nolan is one of the greats. Really, a fine, fine, film presence. That must be said.
He has some dialogue in this film that is just off the charts. For instance:
LN (to Ray Milland): Are you fond of parables?
RM: Yes, in a way.
LN: Well then, I saw these diving suits go down into the sea and come up...dripping. And all the while the fellow inside was dry as toast. And I thought we all needed a suit to go down into the world in and come up scatheless. What do you think its name was?
RM (perplexed): Let's call it "self respect"?
LN: Why not "grace," Harry? Why not "INFINITE GRACE"?
The looks on the faces of Oscar Homolka and Barry Fitzgerald at this moment are priceless. In fact the film has more close-ups by far than most movies. Kind of a seedy and nihilistic, yet enjoyable ride to nowhere. EBB TIDE.
-
Can't find a definitive list. Interesting. And of course, the WB Music site is NOT interested in posting a history.
-

And Frances has a great voice!! The boat they used is docked near a pier in Catalina and still proudly proclaims its use in the movie....or it did in the late 1980's.
-
You mean Dick Van Dyke wasn't shot in New Rochelle and Manhattan?
Sheesh!
-
Now you need to see SON OF FURY....with FF, Tyrone Power, Gene Tierney, Elsa Lanchester, George Sanders, AND Roddy McDowell.
-
NOW it is shower time.
-
You mean Dick Van Dyke wasn't shot in New Rochelle and Manhattan?
Sheesh!
And there ain't no sanity clause either! ;D
-
Does Narnia know?
I hid in the wardrobe!
Amazing how many people were there in the closet, afraid of the light.
-
I tired of the IDOL auditions after the first two nights and haven't watched any more. I'll start back with it tomorrow now that they're in the Hollywood round.
-
I can ask my buddy who works at Warner Bros. If they have such a list, he can access it.
-
Otherwise we can just piece it together album by album. I'll start. The first one that comes to mind is ROME ADVENTURE.
-
Good Evening!
Greetings from Fairfax!
After watching "American Idol" with Steve - and sitting there amazed at the proceedings from time to time - I got back into my car and headed back up 95 to Fairfax. A very easy drive up. No traffic - even though the BIG LED traffic signs kept saying, "ROAD WORK AHEAD, EXPECT DELAYS". I passed the road work, but there was so little traffic tonight, I don't think a back up was possible. Not that I'm complaining.
And I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank the Ford Motor Company for making such a fine vehicle. My 1993 Ford Escort Wagon is just past the 223,200 mile mark, and she's running fine. According to my latest bit of figuring, I'm still averaging 45mpg! Thank You, Ford!
;D
-
I watched another episode of NCIS tonight (my second) since I wasn't going to watch any more IDOL auditions. Do we have fans of the show here? I guess it's OK, but I just don't find the mysteries, the clues not paths to the solutions all that riveting.
But it's one of CBS' biggest hits, so I guess lots of folks do like it.
-
How cool would it be to have been at the taping of a classic episode of some show, and know that every time it comes on you can say you were there?
-
I guess it's difficult to find any lighting that is "kind" these days/nights.
On the contrary, DR Tomovoz, as long as they light me with pink gels, I can still pass for 80...............
Perhaps you should try it????????? ::)
-
Page 8 skate!

-
I've got a book that lists cast albu,s and movie soundtracks by movie title rather than by releasing label, so I can't be much help.
-
Enjoyed HOUSE tonight with a couple of plotlines worth noting.
-
THE SHIELD had a fast moving hour with a twist at the end that was jaw-dropping to say the least!
-
And I went ahead and watched CRUMBS tonight after THE SHIELD went off. Better than last week's episode. There were some laughs and some character progressions which are always nice to see.
-
I don't know 'nuttin about Warner Bros. soundtracks except that I really desire to have that Christmas album with all the Warner's TV stars singing on it.
-
...And the one nice thing about the drive from Richmond to Fairfax - and vice versa - is that it gives me a good amount of time to think about things. And I believe I've come up with two plans of attack for getting the rest of my stuff moved out of my storage unit in Richmond, sorting the rest of my stuff here in Fairfax, and getting the stuff I want and need up to New York City. -And I can do it all by the end of the month!
Ain't thinkin' grand?!?!?
;)

No reason for that last post...he was just on my mind.

Time for to look at Ebay.

Time for to look at Ebay.
Just Say No.
;D
-
I just came from Ebay myself. I DID say no!
-
I read today that the infamous comedy series ACTION which Fox canceled after 9 episodes is coming out on DVD at the end of this month. I never got to see the entire run (Fox didn't show all the episodes it had filmed, and I kept missing the last ones when FX showed it). So, I'm excited to finally be able to see this groundbreaking show in its entirety.
-
Now, I think I'll be off to bed.
Enjoy the rest of the evening!

To quote TPunk, "Crapballs!" :P
I sent in my return on January 18th, and the IRS site said:
We have received your tax return and it is being processed. Unless we find mistakes or you owe other taxes, you should receive your refund by March 7, 2006.
MARCH 7?? With Telefile (which is no longer available), it only took nine or ten days to get my refund! NOW IT TAKES A MONTH AND A HALF?? This is an outrage! I WANT MY MONEY!! :'(
-
::) Whatever. Maybe it'll actually get here sooner and the March date is the latest that I should receive it by. Yea, that's the ticket. ;)
-

Good save, DR George.
;D
-
Aarrgghh.
-
I need MP3s on I Remember by Bernadette and Theresa McCarthy and Dianne Reeves. Please send to haineshisway@gmail.com
BK, I just sent them. And if you really want different versions of the same song, have you heard all four very different versions of "Meadowlark" that Betty Buckley recorded? Those are all different.
-
Got two of them so far. Very different readings and neither of them, for me, has the emotional honesty of Liz's version.
-
Why are people just sitting there like so much fish. I tried to watch Julia, got about forty minutes in, but am saving the rest for tomorrow evening, as I'm just a bit restless tonight. George, still haven't received the Reeves version yet - are you sending it?
-
I sent it and didn't get any error message. If you want, I can send it again.
-
Sure - it didn't get to me. Check the address - maybe you mis-spelled?
-
TOD:
I am currently enamored of HGTV's 2006 Dream House (http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/dream_home/).
But other than that, I would like a house that's up somewhere along the Hudson. Or a ranch in Montanna. Gimme them wide open spaces!
My dream house would have Victorian and Mission Style influences....
I also like Art Noveau influences
-
Wonder if I can get caught up before bk closes the topic???? :-)
-
You can DO it!!!
-
I copied the e-mail address for each, so that shouldn't have been an issue. Anyway, I'm re-sending it right now.
-
BK, did you get it??
-
As promised library pix.
Very nice library Charles...
-
Suggestions welcomed...
THe university where I work, the staff can take one class if they wish and I am taking advantage of that...
I need something to do with my curiosity....
I am taking a class on Indians of the Great Plains and I am doing some explorations on a research topic for my research paper. I have narrowed down to topics on the list:
Native portrayals in media or Midchif musical and oral traditions....
Have not decided yet but I am leaning towards the native portrayals in media.... That could be the fun one to research - watch movies that pertain to the Indians, particularly those in the Great Plains....

Tuesday evening greetings! Oh, my, it was hard to come back to work after a lovely 3-day weekend. And it's been wild and crazy here today - we're short-staffed and the bottom-feeders are quite aggressive.
For me to be short=staffed at the library is not unusual... It is amazing how many people come out at night... After 10 pm we get come really strange ones.... You have to be on your toes at that time of night and trust your gut.

Fun??? I thought that was the purpose of Disney world and the like.... :: shrugs shoulders:::
I like Liz Callaway and Bernadette Peters. Great voices.
Glad to hear that the workshop went well!!

I also have Robert Clary's version on his CD, "Louis Lebeau Remembers Cole Porter, Not Stephen Sondheim (But Sings Their Songs Anyway)." ;)
Is this the Robert Clary that was on Hogan's Heroes and Days of our Lives?
-
Maybe if I go get some chocolate I may get interested in packing up the kitchen. Tomorrow is the first day in the past 8 or 9 days that I don't have to be somewhere before 8:00 am. So maybe chocolate would give me a second wind....it's worth a try.
Chocolate would do it!!!

Time for to look at Ebay.
I try to pretend that ebay does not exist!!
-
Damn...my cat just threw up. :P

Yup! I actually have four CDs by him. I think he's pretty good. He usually has a combo (piano, bass, drums) and sings jazz standards.
-
EWWW!!!!!
Fortunately, 1) it was all fairly solid, and 2) since I witnessed it, it was very easy to clean up. But you're right...EWWW!!!!!

I would be curious to hear him again. I loved it when him and Gloria Loring would sing on Days. He has a great voice.

I paid full price as a contribution to RBI. A good friend of mine's little girl had retinal cancer. She is doing well despite breaking her arm the other night...
-
I haven't.
I will scan a pic of it and post the picture... It was a charity album that some soap actors did. Some can sing well, some do there best and some should not quit their day jobs....
One of the interesting ones is Matthew Ashford's contribution.

Cool! I have an NBC Christmas CD that sounds like it was the same kind of thing...some performers like the "Will & Grace Gang" all sing well, but the "West Wing" gang don't. ::)

Hmm...James Galway doesn't do anything for me (not that I don't think he's an incredible musician). The Soap CD will be fine. :) PM me your address.
