Title: IF WISHES WERE HORSES
Post by: bk on February 10, 2006, 12:04:52 AM
Well, you've read the notes, if the notes were horses then wishes would be notes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - if wishes were cows they'd have been home about three years ago.

Topic of the Day:

In my CD player:  the new Broadway cast recording of Sweeney Todd that I just received yesterday evening, but I couldn't listen to it because I had to usher for a show.  After that will be the other CD that I received (at the same time...a Mary Rodgers reference ;) and in the same package as Sweeney), Barbra Streisand's "Guilty:  The 25th Anniversary Edition."  It's actually a DualDisc that has the CD on one side and DVD stuff on the flip side.  I got the DualDisc sequel, "Guilty Pleasures" a few weeks ago, but I've never had the album or any CD of the original "Guilty."

In my DVD player:  the flip sides of the DualDiscs of "Guilty" and "Guilty Pleasures."

In my VCR:  tapes to tape all of tonight's shows because our whole family will be having dinner at my sister's house.  We have to be there at 6:00 and will probably stick around and play games (Scrabble and Phase 10 are family favorites) till late into the evening.

In my Checking Account:  MY INCOME TAX REFUND!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D

Good morning, all!  I have no major plans today:  the NYPL at noon seems the extent of my day after the recording office this morning.  My meeting with the accontant went much better than I feared yesterday, but I still owe a bundle.

Good morning one and all.

I have a pile of CDs for the office, Whoop Dee Doo (a Nearly Original Cast Recording as it says on the CD), 1776 (OBC), She Loves Me (OBC), City of Angels (OBC), Company (OBC), Music Man (OBC), and Night Music (OBC).

We have lots of goodies to watch this weekend and if it's supposed to snow as predicted we may watch them all. Unfortunately, the snow is supposed to happen on Saturday night and Sunday so there is little chance that work will be cancelled on Monday. We have Latter Days, an indie about a Mormon and a party boy who meet and fall for each other. We have another indie but I can't remember the title because I'm at the office and the DVD is at home (sorry Larry). Both of these pleasures were Christmas gifts from the lovely and charming Mr. Larry Moore, official Grammy voter. On Tuesday we watched another gift from Larry, a television broadcast of Hansel and Gretl. The opera is done with Kimmikins (hand made dolls) using stop motion. The great Anna Russell provided the voice of the Witch. Mildred Dunnock voiced the mother. It was a delightful presentation. It made me feel like a kid again.

And now since it's 8:14 I need to begin working.

Perhaps I can make a CLANDESTINE visit to this site during my working hours. I just don't want to get fired for doing something other than work. An employee of Michael Bloomberg (NYC's Mayor) up in Albany was fired for playing Solitare and leaving it open on his computer the day that Bloomberg showed up in the office for business. Oy!

DR DantheMan, did you ever watch this week's BLEAK HOUSE?  All hell is breaking loose.

I meant to mention that while I was with my accountant, I susdeenly noticed Harry Groener singing "Smile"; they've been playing UNSUNG MUSICALS for the past 10 years, along with several other gift recordings produced by Dear Friend BK.  And speaking of Kimmels, on Tuesday, I gop to Philadelphia for a rehearsal with Peter Nero, Ron Raines and the Philly Pops at Kimmel Hall!   BK, do you have any relatives in Philadelphia who refused to move west?

I destroyed a printer at work yesterday.

Not on purpose.

It was one of those little printers, the ones that verify checks and print out receipts.  It had hung up earlier in the day, shortly after I returned from lunch, but after a little while it decided to reset itself and start printing again, which was convenient because I was running the express-lane checkout.

Immediately after my final break, however, it stopped printing again.  And this time it refused to re-set.  I had to send the customers to other lanes, because I couldn't express them without a printer (no, using hand-signals wasn't going to work).

John, the floor manager on duty, had to move me over to another register.  And sure enough, on my third customer the computer hung up on running a debit card!  I had to call John over again to get her card to run correctly (it involved rebooting the station, which required his input).  As he finished his part of the reboot, John snarled and winked at me, "That's your last call to me for the day."  (This is a guy der Brucer insists never smiles.  He really does, but he does it with his eyes, not his mouth.)

Finally, my shift was over.  There was John, standing atop another register's conveyer belt, replacing the "need assistance" signal light at Debbie's station.  He looked at me, and then at Debbie, and repeated to her "You don't get any more assistance calls for the rest of the day."  Then he looked at me and growled "And YOU, You don't get any more calls for the rest of the MONTH!"

We really do have fun at work.  Honest!

Another thing I'm expecting is a replacement lamp for my TV. No, the original bulb hasn't burned out yet, but the set is almost a year old, and with as much TV as I watch, I figured I'd better have a replacement here ready for me to install once the original lamp burns out (supposed to be good for 6,000-8,000 hours, but I haven't been keeping tabs on hours of TV watched, and if my TV keeps up with it, I've yet to find a switch that will tell me how many hours I've used on this lamp.)

Anyway, ordered a replacement lamp on the 2nd of February, and supposedly it was mailed from Georgia on Monday afternoon. Not here yet.

Hopefully, Showtime will pick up the series which should do well on pay cable.

Two hillbillies Ed and Red walk into a bar.  While having a shot of whiskey, they talk about their moonshine operation. Suddenly, a woman at a nearby table, who is eating a sandwich, begins to cough.  After a minute or so, it becomes apparent that she is in real distress.

One of the hillbillies looks at her and says,   "Kin ya swallar?"

The woman shakes her head no.

"Kin ya breathe?"

The woman begins to turn blue and shakes her head no.

The hillbilly walks over to the woman, lifts up the back of her dress, yanks down her drawers and quickly gives her right butt cheek a lick with his tongue.

The woman is so shocked that she has a violent spasm and the obstruction flies out of her mouth. As she begins to breathe again, the hillbilly walks slowly back to the bar.

His partner says,   "Ya know, I'd heerd of that there 'Hind Lick Maneuver', but I ain't never seed nobody do it!"

As if we needed any more proof that comedy is such an individual thing:

My local film critic in today's paper gave the new Steve Martin/PINK PANTHER film 1 1/2 stars out of 4 finding almost nothing about it funny (did like Kevin Kline in the part Herbert Lom made so memorable).

Mike Clark, the USA TODAY film critic, gave the film 3 stars out of 4 finding much of it reliably amusing.

I've been called in to work later today, due to snow predictions.  It won't matter if we get snow or not - the prediction is enough to send people into the stores in a panic.

I think I've enough time to start making onion soup from scratch.  I've never tried it before, but der B had some at a restaurant recently that he found totally unsatisfying, and I need to rectify that.

Nothing....NOTHING in the world could compel me to watch a movie called THE SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS....

It was bad enough that I once had to sit through THE SECRETS OF THE YAYA SISTERHOOD....

Well it is definitely a chick flick and I mean young chicks... the 12 -16 crowd.  The Vixter read this book as part of a reading group at our public library last year. Since I read most of her books along with her or before her so we can discuss them, I read it as well.

It was a pretty good story for the target audience.  The movie was also good , for the target audience, you'd probably hate it!

I never saw the Ya Ya Sisterhood... the name turned me off. isn't that a terrible reason not to watch a movie?!

"Ya Ya " just made me think "dimwitted"

also it seemed to be one of those films full of angst and  self exploration and confrontation of past wrongs.... and those kind of movies  just annoy me.  I think most people just try and do the best they can and instead of throwing blame at each other people should just cut each other a litle slack and get over themselves already... but I guess that wouldn't make for as interesting movies.....

They only seem to read Deutoronomy! (which I find odd in self professed Christians... they seem to miss the whole message of the fella whose teachings they purport to be following!)

Yes....those people tell you that the message is "God is Love" but they dwell on hate.

If Wishes were horses...
Our spirits would soar

If Wishes were horses...
Our soul would know free

If wishes were horses
Or strength would be unwavering

If wishes were horses...
Loyalty of the heart would reign

If wishes were horses...

Friday greetings!

Media check:  CD (car) - on the way into work, Bette Midler's Live at Last, recommended here by several DRs; on the way home, audiobook White Teeth by Zadie Smith (my book group will discuss it next Thursday and I'm 'way behind.  I'll be doing what I call a "power read" - audio when I'm driving, reading when not.)

No DVDs or videos tonight, because we'll be watching the Winter Olympics opening ceremony.

DR Ginny your post reminded me that the Opening Ceremonies are on here live now.

Will there be any live coverage of the Olympics in the US? Or is everything tape delay?

Here they do both. They have everything live on the CBC, and then they also do what NBC does by showing the good stuff at night.

"The Best of the Tony Awards: The Plays" is the only title that I could find, but it has a 2004 date, so I don't really know if it is part of the same series.  I couldn't find it on the usual places that I order, so I added it to my Netflix queue.

That is probably the correct title, DR George.  It is basically a compendium of the Best Play clips they used to do on the Tonys.  The odd thing is the date, because I thought the DVD was just produced last year.  In any case, let us know if you enjoy it (or not.)

I'd heard that there will be 24-1/2 hours of Olympic coverage everyday, spread over the various NBC stations, so I'm sure that quite a bit will be live...but repeated for primetime coverage on the official network of "NBC."

The best part is that they bought the lengths of the two spots.  They originally wanted a :15 and a :30, but I was told if I wanted to go to a : 30 and a :45 that that wasn't a prob.  I ended up doing a :30 and a :60 just because it felt really good and never seemed like it WAS those lengths.  My editor, having done many of these, was sure their note would be to cut them down, and he was delighted that we don't have to, as am I.

Elderly, but not stupid......

An older, white haired man walked into a jewelry store one Friday eve with a beautiful young gal at his side.  He told the jeweler he was looking for a special ring for his girlfriend.

The jeweler looked through his stock and brought out a $5,000 ring.  The old man said, "I don't think you understand, I want something VERY special."

With that statement, the jeweler went to his special stock and brought another ring out.  "Here's a stunning ring at only $40,000", the jeweler said.  The young lady's eyes sparkled and her whole body trembled with excitement.  The old man seeing this said, "We'll take it."

The jeweler asked how payment would be made and the old man stated "By check. I know you need to make sure my check is good, so I'll write it now and you can call the bank Monday to verify the funds and I'll pick the ring up Monday afternoon",  he said.

Monday morning, a very teed-off jeweler phoned the old man.  "There's no money in that account!"

"I know", said the old man, "but can you imagine the weekend I had?"

That was rather a harsh comment from me, DR JMK, but it's theft.  Alex and Liz worked very hard on her arrangements, and Bruce as producer had his input on them as well.  I'm flattered that she likes their work, I'm proud of my involvement with them, but it's still theft.  She should hire you, or another arranger, to arrange some songs she'd like to sing for her, but transcribing Liz's charts, or another singers', is something I don't approve of, even though I have been equally guilty of the same crime in my work for various projects.

No, she is using Liz's keys (as I think I stated) for various songs she's doing.

What got me going was your comment about transcribing/notating from a CD.

She's also doing "Not While I'm Around" in Barbra's key of C, so maybe someone should alert David Foster or whoever arranged that one.  ;)

Keys are one thing, arrangements are another.  I get requests all the time for use of my arrangements on our various albums - if they were mine completely, I think about it.  If it's something I just had input on, like Liz's CDs, I don't give them out.  But, I must say several of my favorite Liz tracks would not be what they are without said input and without elmore's wonderful work.

I thought JMK had bought the new house and was moving.  I must have missed it, too.  How come Adair hasn't called her DIRECTOR?

We addressed the few notes, and put the redos on the server for final approval.  I have no idea if they'll get to them today or not, so here we sit.

The inspector man has come and left. Inspection went fine.

A heating guy came and picked up tubing and tools that he left behind.

The gas company man came and installed the meter.

Now two young guys are under the house hooking things up.

Shortly another heating man will arrive to show me how to use the new furnace.

Whew, that is a lot of guys coming and going in the last few days...what must the neighbors think.

And now, I shall be on my way to the theater for a little brush-up rehearsal and then this evening's performance.  Pray for Rosemary's Baby.

Riches are coming my way. It's a change from Africa!

Greetings from British Isles.

My name is Michael Mann. I am the Head, Audit Committee of a reputable and well known Financial Trust here in Isle of Man.  I am contacting you in a non-official
capacity and therefore require your utmost confidentiality.

The purpose of my writing to you is because I am searching for a foreign business partner who is in a position to assist me with an urgent business
proposal, as time is not  on my side. A partner, who understands what confidentiality means and who has the necessary  facilities  required in
embarking on this important venture.

We had a  client who deposited a huge sum of money with one of our branches in Europe, who later died in a fatal car accident on November 12,
2001. The client died intestate and nominated no successor in title over the investments made with our bank. Since the death of this client, I personally
have watched with keen interest to see the next of kin but all has proved abortive as no one has come to claim his funds of ?11,700,000.00 (Eleven
Million, Seven Hundred Thousand Euros) deposited with our bank in 2000. This client shares the same surname with you. It is for this reason that I am
contacting you.

In accordance with the European Trust and Federal Laws, at the expiration of 5 (five) years, his investments with our bank shall revert to ownership
of the government of the country of the said investments if nobody applies as the next of kin to claim the investments.

Since you share the same surname with this client,  I want to present you to stand in as the next of kin so that you and I can benefit from this
investment equally (i.e. 50% for you and 50% for me). I guarantee that this will be executed under legitimate arrangement that will protect us from any
breach of the law, as I will use my position to secure approvals and guarantee the successful execution of this transaction.

If this proposal is acceptable to you, kindly indicate your full names, your private telephone, fax numbers and location where the money will be
remitted. I will instruct you on the next step to take.

I look forward to your earliest response.

With warm greetings,

Ben, at the end of the film it’s mentioned that David Friedman is the number one clown in New York.  Does Anthony know him?

Good Evening!

Greetings from New York City!

*Uptown/West Harlem to be more precise.  ;)

I left Fairfax, VA, at 3:00, and I pulled up to my apartment at 8:00.  Not too bad considering I left right at the top of rush hour on a Friday.  Strangely enough, the traffic on the Beltway in VA and MD was next to nothing - even the traffic reporters on the radio were surprised at how light the rush hour was.  However, once I hit the Baltimore Beltway - both at the "bottom" and the "top" - there were a couple of delays, and a couple of accidents.  But still, the trip normally takes just over 4 hours from DC - 248 miles door to door - and I made it in 5 - and that included a stop for gas.

OH!  And I really did pull up right to my apartment - there was a space right out front!  I double and triple-checked just to make sure I wasn't in a tow zone - there's a fire hydrant out front too - and, sure enough, I was not.  :)

I got the car unloaded, and then I headed down the block to the Pathmark to stock up one some groceries for the week.  And then over to Popeye's for late-late lunch, late dinner.  Love that chicken!

;)

And now, I'm resting a bit, watching the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympics, and in a little bit I shall put the rest of my stuff away, take a shower, and get some sleep.

At least that's the plan for now.

:)

Well... If you had posted that post about three hours later, DR Jason... Well...

;)

However, in retrospect, it was probably a good thing that I left as "late" as I did.  Had I hit the Lincoln Tunnel - or the George Washington Bridge - at 5:00, I probably would have sat there for a good hour in the rush hour traffic.  -And then there would have been the NJ Turnpike to deal with too at the time.  So...

It's all good.

I'm watching the Olympics ceremony.  Tasteless as the last one.  I had suppressed the last one with its pioneer history and dancing settlers, and this dredged it all up!  Who thinks up these spectacular all-dancing fiascos?  Who stages them?  I can't wait for the sports, though.

DR TCB, I liked this film a lot; I'm a big fan of Adam Goldberg, and I thought Andrea Martin was wonderful as well.

Thank you, Larry, I thought maybe I was the lone ranger.  Adam Goldberg was quite delightful, and I have always enjoyed watching Mr. Ruccolo.

And Jose as for your comments:

Even I draw the line at some comments!

Greetings from my new home!!!  Moving was well moving.  I still have some stuff at the old house.  But there is no hurry to get out and the movers got all the furniture and most of the boxes, I just sort of hit the wall and didn't get everything packed.  My handyman said he'd get a helper and move the rest for much less money. Can't beat that with a stick

When I was accompanying the students in Catholic University's Musical Theatre department, there was a lot of "theft" going on left and right.  Especially when it came to recital time.  Thankfully(?), my transcriptions skills are "slow", and I would never "steal" for my students.  If they wanted a particular arrangement, I would have them hire someone else to do the work and/or put them in touch with the proper people to request the arrangements - and request the proper permission for those arrangements.  -Or, I would come up with another arrangement just for them.  *DR Jason heard my arrangement of "On the Street Where You Live".  In any case...

One very resourceful young woman I worked with was able to contact many a pianist/musical director in NYC - Eric Stern, Patrick Vacariello, Bruce Coyle, Alex Rybeck, Christopher Marlowe (Nancy Lamott's pianist, who happens to be a CUA alumnus), etc.  Sometimes she was given permission - and the charts - and other times, she was kindly asked not to duplicate someone else's work.  And she even lucked out a few times when someone would give her a chart that didn't work for someone else.  I think she even worked out some free coachings too.

Umm...  Other DRs beat me to the responses I was coming up with...

I skipped the pageant after watching a few minutes of it.  I was going to take a nice hot bubble bath, but alas no hot water, so I took a very short almost luke warm bath. Since the plumbers have been here 5 different days in the last 10 days, I am calling them again tomorrow to see why I had hot water until the guy who screwed a number of things up was here last.

Oh, my favorite plumber line of the week...."I got the hot water to quit dripping in the shower, but you can never turn on the hot water in there again"  Where do they find these people?

Last night we watched CAPTURING THE FRIEDMAN’S.  This documentary of the family is just as gripping, frustrating and sad as any good crime show.  I kept waiting for the team from IN JUSTICE to sort out the truth for us.

Vixmom and other New Yorkers do you remember this case and the family?

Ben, at the end of the film it’s mentioned that David Friedman is the number one clown in New York.  Does Anthony know him?

...I still remember how "freaked out" I got when I heard the "Fresh Air" interview with Susan Orlean a few years ago.  Ms. Orlean had written a story about the Friedmans - I believe it first appeared in "The New Yorker".  Stranger and sadder than any fiction.

DR Cillaliz - Congrats on your move!

I envy you.  It's gonna take me at least two more trips back and forth between here and Fairfax (and Richmond) to get all my stuff up here.  *I've done the math, and renting a moving van would be sort of "silly", even if it would take care of things in one fell swoop.  And the thought of driving a moving van on the NJ Turnpike and over the GW Bridge and through Washington Heights does not appeal to me at all.

Have fun in your new castle!

Thanks!!  Well, the professional movers charge too much for me to have them move everything, but I have a piano and some family antiques that I wanted someone insured to move - especially in the snow. Me, too. I had heard great things about Hoffman's performance, but I wasn't prepared for how riveting everyone was in the movie, and seeing the public and private Truman was just astounding. TPunk and I recently returned home from a stellar staging of KISMET at NY City Center. What can you say about Stokes? The guy's a winner. He doesn't mug or ham it up in a role where it would be quite easy to do so. Marin Mazzie was a bombshell of hilarious proportions, shall we say. Don't think anyone will care to know that but the French version of Stranger In Paradise here, Etranger Au Paradis, was the hit of wonderful pop-singer Gloria Lasso who passed away just a few weeks ago, at eighty three. And even recently she could warble a song like most new singers can't!

Hello France!

Did you hear that an American sportscaster who had signed to work for ABC-ESPN and wanted to leave to work for NBC was "traded" to NBC for the rights to Walt Disney's character Oswald the Lucky Rabbit?

Seems a thorn in the Disney family's side was that Walt didn't have the rights to this precursor to Mickey. So when Al Michaels wanted out of his contract, the deal was NBC-Universal, which owned Oswald, would give the rights to ABC-Disney.

The guy got traded for a cartoon character!

Alas, the more I put things away and straightened things up the more I realized just how much stuff was left here by the guy I'm subletting from.  And not just in my bedroom... The kitchen, the bathroom, the coat closet... Even my roomies commented tonight about all the "leftovers".  We're thinking of charging him a storage fee.

TPunk is watching that Jane Monheit show now. She saw her live and met her at the San Jose Jazz festival. Nice voice.

Ohh!!!

I had two very nice pieces of mail waiting for me when I got in tonight:

1) My membership card for Local 802.  I'm official!!!  -And apparently, I'm somehow paid up dues-wise for the first half of the year already.  One less check to write come April. :)

2) A card and fridge magnet from DR Ginny.  Thank you.  :)

Interesting François. She also recorded it in Spanish as "Extranos en el Paraiso."

Yes, that was her mother tongue!

I'd love to be traded for a Disney character!! LOL!
And a rabbit!!

I had heard about Disney getting its character back but not how!
Thanks for the info!

...And just silly-talented at such a still relatively-young age.  I believe she was just barely 21 when she placed second in the Thelonius Monk Jazz Competition a few years ago, and her debut recording is a great listen - it doesn't sound like a "first-timer".

Well... I believe I shall toddle off to bed now... It's been a long day... but a good one.

Goodnight.

Went to Ben Ash Deli after the show. Always a good sign when of 4,000 people leaving a show across the street, you're the only ones who choose to go to a certain restaurant. But we wanted cheesecake so we rejected our better judgment. Got the usual thing where a place is mostly empty and where do they seat us? Right by the door on a cold night. So we ask for another spot. Ok. Then the usual Ben Ash 10 minutes of nonexistant service. Then another pair of unfortunates come in, and where do they seat these people in this nigh empty place? At a table right beside us? So they ask for another spot. Ok. Cheesecake good. Overpriced, but good. And that's the story of my final visit to Ben Ash Deli.

Back from Mark's and watching MA AND PA KETTLE AT THE FAIR co-starring James Best and Lori Nelson.

Not one of the Kettles' best.

Whew, but it took me an hour and a half to drive home because of a bad accident involving several cars on I-5 South...the same accident I had passed as I drove north to Mark' over 3 hours earlier in the evening...it takes Oregon a LOOOOOOONG time to clean up accident scenes.

Congratulations on the new digs!

IN JUSTICE left me with tears in my eyes tonight. The show has really grown on me in the past few weeks.

I set my VCR to tape this and "Battlestar Galactica" tonight and I was very careful to set the correct times and day...but I forgot to turn the timer on!  AARRGGHH!!  On my other VCRs, you just turn off the power, but on this one, you actually have to set the timer. :P

At least "BG" will be on again at 1:00 a.m.  Time is entered and timer is set. :)

LP Cover of the night: Roslyn Kind "Give Me You." I know nothing about this woman. Has anyone here ever heard of her? The cover just kinda drew me in. Alas she is not a very good singer.

You've never heard of her??  Unless there's another Roslyn Kind, she's Barbra Streisand's half-sister!  The only song that I have of her is called A Cabaret Noel:  A Broadway Cares Christmas (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000CZ3UC8/qid=1139643569/sr=1-7/ref=sr_1_7/102-4779504-7364131?s=music&v=glance&n=5174).  I highly recommend this CD to anyone (but not just because of  Roslyn Kind).  Anyway, she sings "The Perfect Christmas Eve" and has a lovely voice.  She was also a guest on an episode of "The Nanny."

In the morning, I have to take my niece to see a movie in Seattle.  I don't really want to see it again ("Imagine Me & You"...it's cute, but not "special" enough for me), but she's paying and I did say that I'd take her to see it again, so I'm driving.  But the good part is that afterwards, we will go to Tower Records, Silver Platters and Borders Books and Music as we head south back to Olympia...even if my niece doesn't want to. ;) I have my income tax refund money and I plan on spending some (but certainly, not all!) of it. ;D

So, now I'm off to bed.  I'm doing the Wussburger...it goes very well with my Happy Dance that I did yesterday when I found out that my income tax refund was deposited!
