Title: THE SEVEN MINUTE NOTES
Post by: bk on February 24, 2006, 12:13:50 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes took you seven minutes to read, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they'll be here in seven minutes cow time.

I hope I do not have to drive to LA tomorrow afternoon. But I suppose that would be better than leaving at 3 a.m. on Saturday.

I got my copy of Baker Street on Wednesday!  I listened to a couple of songs yesterday, but will listen to the whole thing today.  I have several more brand new CDs at work, so when I get there, I'll report what they are (I don't remember, right now).

In my DVD player:  "The 24th Day" with BK's very own landlord, James Marsden!

Good morning, all!  And a special hello to my colleague, DR Michael Shayne!  Afte two days away from the recording office, I can't wait to see what's been happening there.  It's always a surprise.  I've got Toyland on the docket, then a trip to Chelsea Music to pick up my score from last month's recording session, and a stop at the union to pick up a check.

TOD:

Well, for a while the regular morning crew was back. I was catching up on yesterday's posts but Tom, Larry, Michael and I were all in the same place at the same time!

Don't know what I'll listen to yet. I've got WMKV on right now and I'll probably switch to AccuRadio at some point. I'm going to see Barefoot in the Park and I already have dinner plans with my theatre buddies. I think we're eating at the Turkish place on 47th Street between 6th and 7th Avenue just a hop, skip and a jump away from the Palace Theatre, home of Lestat.

Pajama Game got some nice reviews. The very good review from Brantley in the Times may get the show an extension. Here is the link but remember you have to be registered at the Times to read the review:

Pajama Game Times (http://theater2.nytimes.com/2006/02/24/theater/reviews/24paja.html)

Linda Wiener from Newsday did not like the production:

Pajama Game Newsday (http://www.newsday.com/entertainment/ny-etledew4637737feb24,0,1876462.story?coll=ny-entertainment-bigpix)

Howard Kissel from the Daily News like some of it but overall it's a pan:

Pajama Game Daily News (http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/story/394090p-334146c.html)

Frank Scheck from Reuters really liked the show:

Pajama Game Reuters (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060224/stage_nm/stage_pajama_dc;_ylt=ApK4DN0S9vpM7TSywP579MEIGL8C;_ylu=X3oDMTA5aHJvMDdwBHNlYwN5bmNhdA--)

Associated Press critic Michael Kuchwara also gave it a very good review:

Pajama Game AP (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060224/ap_en_ot/theater_the_pajama_game;_ylt=Ahbc3YhBfR190wJuTQ8Ta5BX24cA;_ylu=X3oDMTA5aHJvMDdwBHNlYwN5bmNhdA--)

Those of you who read here and also get CastRecL will get these reviews and more sometime today.

This is your roving (maybe raving) critic, Ben, signing off  ;)

I am still reeling from the link Jose posted last night with Galinda on FHM.  How does she reconcile that with her "god music"?

Also, Rodzinski and I were at the movies this past weekend and saw the trailer for some Robin Williams atrocitity entitled RV.  There was a brief shot of a blond in a bikini hanging out of a car and I thought, is that Kristin Chenoweth?? It is... she's making it oh so hard for me to like her anymore.

End of rant.
Title: Re:THE SEVEN MINUTE NOTES
Post by: Ben on February 24, 2006, 06:31:39 AM
TPunk, I know what you mean about Chenoweth. I have such mixed feelings about her layout in FHM. There are times I don't want to know anything about a performer outside of what I see on the screen or on stage. I do find the layout rather hypocritical but it might be a reaction to her appearance a few months ago on the 700 Club. She went on to promote her album and never got into a discussion of anything beyond her music and her faith but she got a lot of flak for appearing with the (IMHO) unpleasant and distasteful (I changed the adjectives to less incendiary words) Pat Robertson.

I'd also like to comment on last night's skating (ladies long program).

.
.
.

I was extremely disappointed in the skating.  I mean really disappointed.
I honestly don't think that Sasha Cohen deserved a silver medal for that performance (and she is my favorite skater of the bunch).

I wanted to see both her and the russian skate flawlessly and then see who would win.  I think I was in shock when Sasha fell on her two first jumps.  I think she did a great job after that. But still, IMO you fall twice = no podium.

DR MattH, I also loved the Canadian skater (her name is Joannie Rochette).  I was really proud that she made it all the way to 5th place.

As for the Japanese gold medalist.  Well considering the other 2 fell, she had to win.  But she just didn't do it for me.  She was graceful and skated well.  But she was not exciting or interesting.

It's really a shame that some years everyone skates clean and someone who skated fantastic has to get a silver medal, and this year we have this. I really was expecting so much more.

As for last night's AMERICAN IDOL.

I was quite surprised with the results.  Plus I hated the way they did it.  To make everyone safe once, and then have them have to be put up for elimination was stupid.  You pull out the 3 or 4 lowest and pick from there. You don't make people safe for the first elimination and then choose from the safe ones for the second!

I had not heard anything about Becky, but was shocked she was sent home.  I don't think that Becky or Stevie were in the top 6 best girls. But I think they were better than a bunch of them.  I was so happy when it was brenna, konnik and becky standing there. I was hoping the first two went but had a feeling they would not let us be rid of brenna this soon.

As for the guys I was not suprised about copacabana guy. And while the other guy (patrick?) was not in my 6 best. I also don't think he was the worst. So i was surprised he went this early.

DR MattH what is Becky's scandal and where did you hear about it?

I actually had to watch American Idol instead of Survivor last night.

I was babysitting 4 kids (my sister's niece and nephew and 2 of their friends). Their parents had to go to a funeral viewing.

They all love American Idol (they are 6, 10 and 11).  Their favorites are kellie, paris, lisa. And my sister's niece loves that little geeky 16 yr old boy with the blond hair).

It was cute watching with them.

Ben - BK has the demo CD of the TIME AND AGAIN score.   Actually, I first found this here site when I was googling Skip's name (which may sound a little silly, but we do that every now and then, just to see if anything new - positive or negative - is being said on the web) and found that BK had made comments about how much he enjoyed Skip's TIME AND AGAIN score.

Good Morning!!

I saw most of the skating last night before falling asleep.  The local news stations are all praising Emily Hughes for landing in 7th place.  I thought her routine was lovely and she projected her sheer joy of being there skating in the Olympics.

I look forward to seeing her again in four years time.

Re: that Kristin Chenoweth FHM spread.

I'd seen one of the pictures before (posted).

They are really sexy! Wow.  She looks incredible. But it really doesn't fit with the image she has portrayed (the wholesome religious one).

I guess she wanted to change that image!

DR Jennifer, I know what you mean about the skating. Overall, it was not inspired skating by the podium dwellers. However, as I tried to explain last night, the new scoring system is a lot kinder to falls than the old one, and this is something all of us will have to get out of our heads. In the old system, Sasha Cohen would have fallen off the podium for one fall and one miss (with hands down). Now with the new system, hands on the ice doesn't constitute a fall, you get credit for the revolutions of a jump you do even if you land on your butt, and jumps in the second half of the program are awarded with bonus points. This is where Cohen made up for her mistakes because the second half of her program was flawless, and Slutskya's major mistakes all came in the second half robbing her of bonus points.

It used to be said that the judges would judge what you did, not what you left out, but that was never really true. Now, every aspect of a routine gets some kind of point consideration, and on these little things championships can rise and fall. There are good and bad aspects to both judging systems, but looks like this one is here to stay with us for awhile. (The last change in judging, when ordinals replaced points in judging, lasted almost thirty years.)

BTW, the Japanese skater who won also played it very conservatively. She had a triple-triple combination planned, and lowered her content because of Cohen's mistakes and the likelihood of Slutskya's tendency to play it safe. She played the odds and won.

Well, about that power company mix-up. Last fall, my elderly neighbor across the street passed away. His house number is 3009. My house number is 3000. Someone at the power company mixed up the two numbers and entered the resident at 3000 as the deceased party. Thus, the bank drafts taken from my account to pay my monthly bill ceased, and yet power was still being consumed at my address without payments being made. I hadn't noticed the change because since they weren't drafting money out of my account any more, they also weren't sending me a bill, so that when I tallied my bills and bank statement for the past four months, everything matched up, and I simply didn't notice that a power bill was missing.

Yesterday, I got an automated phone call alerted the dweller of this residence that power was due to be turned off on February 27th due to nonpayment of bills! So, I was on the phone pronto straightening out the whole mess.

Now, I'm back among the living and have squared accounts with the power company. Lesson learned: make sure every utility is paid every single month.

It's scheduled to run through June 11th but if the reviews are strong enough I'm sure Roundabout (depending on the availability of Mr. Connick) will try to extend at least through the summer. The show is getting generally good to excellent reviews and since Roundabout hasn't had a real hit since 12 Angry Men I'm sure they will try to lock into this production.

Re: JRand55's question last night about what music we would use in "our" skating programs:

Short:  Elmer Bernstein's "Hollywood and the Stars"

Long:  SO MANY CHOICES.

Randy Edelman's "Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story" -- the next to last track (IIRC)
Randy Edelman's "Dragonheart" -- an edit of the the first two tracks on the CD
David Shire's sole orchestral composition for "2010" (I think it's title is "New Worlds")

Exhibition: The first track (Main theme) to the first "Survivor" CD -- a total footwork routine, I think.

An ambitious long program would be to the overture by Bronislau Kaper for "Mutiny on the Bounty" -- It would have to be edited a bit...and I have often thought the final minute or so of the track "Leaving Harbor" would be a nice alternate ending for that program...it could be done.

The entire overture can be heard here:

Not that I've ever given it any thought at all....

SPOILER

LADIES' FREE SKATE

SPOILER

I don't have any problems with the end results of yesterday's long program...but I take issue with the judges for giving Arakawa higher "component program" (i.e. "artistic") marks than Sasha Cohen.  Arakawa's spins were limited, somewhat cumbersome and a few were "alop."  And that doughnot spin...she did it three or four times...whassupwidat?  VARIETY is very much needed.  She's a beautiful lady, statuesque...has that Katarina Witt appeal on ice...but one fall on on those jumps and she has nothing to fall back on, so to speak...she could not have overcome the fall that Sasha took and still have medaled, IMO.

Slutskaya has the same problem..only she also has NO choreography of note...it's just a dizzying series of dashes to her next jump...her spins are wild abandon unleashed...and excellent.  She chose high-energy music this year and it very much worked against her in that it left no after-glow with the viewers.  As highly overrated as I've thought she has been the past five years, I was disappointed that she had nothing more to offer than she displayed last night.

As for the oft-reported comment that she believed she should have been given the gold in Salt Lake City, the truth is she didn't earn it.  Her performance was pretty lackluster.  I cannot imagine anyone watching that event and thinking Irina skated better than anyone.  I didn't even think her skate was better than Michelle Kwan's (who, ruinously, changed her terrific program skated at nationals...which included a final series of things like a split, a falling leaf and other fast footwork...totally eliminating the emotional rush that progam had at its end) and Michelle fell once, but skated beautifully.  No! Sara Hughes skated THE program of that competition...one day I hope Irina realizes this and gets over herself.

As for the skating being on too late.

It was on MUCH TOO LATE FOR ME.  I scanned through the final five performances this morning.  I was dog tired last night, although I didn't go to bed until 10:30 p.m.

NBC needs to be rebuked for its atrocious handling of the day's events.  Primetime is FAMILY time ... and it's roughly 8-10 p.m.

The TRUMP CARD for the Olympics is figure skating, and none is as high a draw as Ladies Figure Skating.

To show it over the course of FOUR HOURS, with the finale falling the final hour when most folks have gone to bed, is INSANE.  It's wrongheaded, ignorant and whoever made the decision to show the event in this manner deserves to be fired and blacklisted from making such decisions ever again, except in the privacy of his home.

I PRAY NBC lost the ratings to "Idol" and "Survivor" and the other two "competition" shows..."Skating with the Stars" and "Dancing with the Stars" -- because none of the figure skating that mattered was aired in those two hours -- and SHOULD have been.

DR Ron Pulliam - I've been wondering about the lateness of the NBC coverage.  I guess they really want to win all the time slots possible.  I was surprised when I got in last night - after 11:30 - that the skating was still going on.  I figured they would have ended by 11:30 - or at least 11:38 to coincide with the end of the local news coverage on the other stations.  -Oh, I guess 10:30 and 10:38 for "those" time zones.

If the coverage was "live", then I could understand it going that late, but since it was tape-delayed...

*I do have a feeling, however, that "AI" probably won the ratings race again this week, so.... Cold comfort.

I was not thrilled with the skating either. Lackluster in a way...

I do have to give credit to a gal from Turkey... NOt the grandest of all routines but she showed she had determination and guts....

I also enjoyed the Canadian skater.

I agree with you. I find her fresh and engaging when she skates, and she has such a positive attitude. (So did sister Sarah when she was competing.)

I agree also... In someway I am rather surprised she did not continue competing but then again she got the ultimate prize in the Olympics -- the gold.

Good Afternoon!

My car was still there!

:)

Whew!

;)

The law is that no one can be parked within 15 feet of a fire hydrant in New York City.  So...  Does this mean 15 feet on each side of the fire hydrant?  Or 7-1/2 feet on each side of the fire hydrant for a total clearance of 15 feet?  I even walked around the block a bit just to gauge how close - and how far away - people were parking from the fire hydrants, but that little constitutional didn't help me.  There was a cop on the corner on neighborhood patrol, and I thought about asking him, but...  ;)

*However, while walking around the block, I found a couple of space that were no where near hydrants, so I ended up moving my car.  -Best of all, I won't have to move it again until Tuesday (that is if I don't move it again in the interim), and the car started up fine again this morning too.  Whew!

Actually, this is what is wrong about the Olympics...moreso now than ever.

The Olympics is NOT a nation-vs.-nation "competition"...it's a celebration of athletes...and it is meant to reward the best of the best...not for "national medal counts" but for the athletes who win them.

The U.S. fielded a team....we should be proud of them for their accomplishments and grateful for those who tried and failed.

Shizuka Arakawa will be honored for decades to come for her gold medal (Japan's ONLY medal of the games, thus far).

Our gold medalists will be on Wheaties boxes for a few months and then forgotten...their names will be trotted out in four years IF they return to compete...otherwise, they're yesterday's news.

Our media places unrealistic expectations on our athletes...none of whom is unbeatable or inhuman...all have weaknesses.

Someone posted here the other day that he is sick and tired of Bode Miller.

Well...don't blame Bode Miller.  He didn't do the commentary or write the words...in fact, he'd rather folks left him alone.  Blame the media and only the media for that...and also for the conceit that our national pride is somehow wounded if Sasha Cohen has to "settle for Silver" or that Johnny Weir's "wierdness" somehow kept him for winning a medal and, therefore, dishonored the USA.

It is NOT ABOUT US...it's about THEM...they are the ones who have trained all their lives -- at their own expense, not from government endowments in government facilities -- and we have no right to demand anything from them.

I have the utmost respect for the athletes...from all the nations...and I'm truly tired of the media trying to make us believe it's a country vs. country affair.

DOWN WITH MEDAL COUNTS -- the Cold War is OVER!

Well, I just double-checked the NYCDOT site again, and here is the exact wording:

Quote
It is illegal to park within 15 feet of either side of a fire hydrant. The painted curbs at hydrant locations do not indicate where you can park.

The first sentence makes sense to me - sort of.  -And I'm guessing that it's probably one of the least enforced regulations, at least according to what I saw when I walked around the block.  However, that second sentence about "do not indicate" is interestingly worded.  -Just like that sentence.  ;)
Title: Re:THE SEVEN MINUTE NOTES
Post by: Jrand73 on February 24, 2006, 09:55:23 AM
Well....DRRLP - they are traveling there under the aegis of the United States.  They are just people, but I don't think it's unreasonable to expect them to compete and win.  They want to be the best.

And I think the Olympics is about national pride and wanting to compete.  It always has been.  And the first awards were leaves that died within a few days.

Athletes who use the Games as a platform for their own political statements or their own agendas are wrong.  Of course the media is responsible for a LOT of what is wrong with these games.

NBC is producing Olympic Idol - they just happened to choose the wrong contestants.

I highly doubt that Becky was voted off because of the pictures.  I can't imagine that most American Idol watchers/voters would have heard about this.  I know I had not heard anything.

After you wrote about it, I even searched on the AI message boards and did not see anything.  Then I looked under AI stories in the news and did find one mention.  It sounded like her and her sister did some modelling and were hired to do some suggestive poses (in bikinis).  That doesn't seem like much of a scandal to me, especially since it was years ago.

I still don't get why she got voted out.

For Canada I really liked Chandra Crawford winning the women's cross country sprint. That race was very exciting.

And also the women's long track speed skating, with canada getting gold and silver.  The winner of that race (cindy klassen) will probably be Canada's flag bearer. Since she has won 4 medals so far this Olympics (one gold, 2 silvers and a bronze), with one more race to go!

DR VIXMOM if you go to yahoo.com and click on Olympics, and then figure skating you can get several pages off photos.

DR RLP....that's not what I said.  If they do their best and they don't win, that's okay.  Not everyone can win, and being an Olympic athlete is a great accomplishment in itself.

But being in it for PERSONAL satisfaction is not the same thing.

I am all for the efforts they each make and what I think of them doesn't really matter much - but I can certainly have an opinion about their behavior.  I hope some of them do 'fade away' - and as for Bode Miller don't tell me he doesn't love all the attention.  He just didn't expect it to continue when he turned out to be a less than spectacular contender.

DR RLP, I agree with many of your points and I agree with you strongly on the fact that it IS the athletes and that IS who should be honored. I, myself, love to watch some of the athletes from other countries. In the last Olympics I found myself cheering for Sale and Pelletier... Other Olympics I have found myself cheering for Russians, Brits, Irish, and many other countries. In the last summer Olympics I even found myself cheering for an Aussie!

I love it when an athlete over comes the odds and wins.. I am often turned off of the ones that hyped to death in the media and have never performed well in the long run. Yes, there are exceptions to this reasoning but I prefer the athletes that are there to compete not the social butterflies...

It is one of several reasons to this day I cannot stand Kerrigan or Harding... In the 1992 Olympics I actually found myself cheering for Kwan, Baiul and Bonaly...

IMHO, that whole mess was an insult to people who love the sport...

::: I will now get off the soapbox for the next individual :::

No, that's not really necessary, but I am sick.  I don't know what happened, but I woke up with a soar throat (it sort of hurts to talk, swallow and cough) and I feel a little achy all over.

I have a lot of sick leave so I'm finally taking a sick day.  But I will need to go to Costco to get some Dimetapp.  And some kitty litter...not for my throat, but because I'm totally out, the litter box is almost empty and my indoor cat will need to go again.

Ummm...NBC did not give us 3 hours and 55 minutes of figure skating (8 p.m. - 11:55 p.m.)  The network was airing several events, a few contests at a time, over the course of the evening.   The figure skating they showed us started with a couple of skates in the first hour, a few more in the second, and then they aired the final six in the block between 11 and midnight.  Irina's skate, the last of the evening, ended at roughly 11:55 p.m. PST.  If aired as a whole, the performances they showed us could have been over in 90 minutes.  I'm certain ALL the ladies would take longer, but NBC was airing tape-delayed edits of the competition.  The network could very easily have isolated individual events so that viewers could either watch or set their VCRs/DVRs to catch the events that interested them.
Title: Re:THE SEVEN MINUTE NOTES

DR RLP....that's not what I said.  If they do their best and they don't win, that's okay.  Not everyone can win, and being an Olympic athlete is a great accomplishment in itself.

But being in it for PERSONAL satisfaction is not the same thing.

I am all for the efforts they each make and what I think of them doesn't really matter much - but I can certainly have an opinion about their behavior.  I hope some of them do 'fade away' - and as for Bode Miller don't tell me he doesn't love all the attention.  He just didn't expect it to continue when he turned out to be a less than spectacular contender.

Unless you know Mr. Miller personally, I have to assume that everything you feel about him is based upon media coverage of him.  Media colors how you feel about an athlete when they feature him, and vilify him...when they place pressure of winning gold upon him and make him a goat and criticize his parentage when he doesn't win.

They invade personal lives and discuss reputations with women and other athletes...they exaggerate the athletes' training regimens...and criticize them, too.  And who are these people doing all this?  Not coaches.  Not athletes.

It's the media, and the audience members who buy into their spin.  There are two sides to every story...and for every bad thing you hear about someone like Bode Miller, chances are that it's an exception rather than the rule.

I assure you that every athlete who wins a medal is aware of the pride the country feels in him or her, but I assure you the athlete did not dedicate his/her life to a sport to satisfy you or me or anyone else.

They all do it to succeed, as individuals, and to win over other individuals, regardless of national origins.

DR MattH re: Becky from American Idol.

I highly doubt that Becky was voted off because of the pictures.  I can't imagine that most American Idol watchers/voters would have heard about this.  I know I had not heard anything.

DR Jennifer, I don't think viewers voted Becky off. I think the producers axed her. If you've ever read the rules of the show (broadcast at the end of competitions), you know that the producers have the right AT ANY TIME to dispute the viewer votes and make their own decisions for the good of the show. I think they exercised it with her to spare themselves any further dealings with controversy.

I didn't find the pictures at all demeaning, but there are probably quite a few IDOL conservatives who did.

And I'm just guessing here; I have no inside source of information. It's the only thing that would make sense since there were far weaker singers and with less personality than Becky.

I'm curious, how many medals was the US supposed (estimated) to win?

Every morning there is an Olympics section in the newspaper. And I noticed that the US only had 19 medals (Canada had 18 i think). I thought the US always got like triple the medals we got.

Not in the Winter Olympics. We've never been a winter sport power.

I really think that the Idol producers would not dare vote out Becky on their own. If that came out the show would be in major trouble, since the fans would go crazy.

I don't think that what Becky did was too serious. Plus since she wasn't one of hte strongest ones, there was little chance she'd even make it to final 6 girls. So I don't think they would have had to boot her.

I don't see why not...I'm fairly certain they negated Clay Aiken as winner and selected Ruben who has NEVER had Clay's fan base.

And I'm not at all convinced that Carrie got more votes than Bo.

In both cases, Simon was strongly in the camp of anybody-but-Clay and he always loved Carrie.

I always found Carrie rather insipid...and she never once performed anything as well as Bo performed in the last three competitions, including the final.

But that's just my take.

I'm not sure we've had an honest-to-gosh audience-choice winner, unless it was Kelly.

I know what you mean, but Kwan's first Olympics was 1998. Our three ladies in 1992 were Yamaguchi, Harding, and Kerrigan, and in 1994, we only had two slots available which went to Harding (as national champion) and Kerrigan appointed to the second slot as Kwan was this year. Kwan had finished second in the nationals in 1994 but was an alternate in 1994 and didn't attend.

I think the U.S. took 34 medals in the 2002 games....and "they" were hoping "we" would better that record (for the U.S.) number of medals this time.  There is a side story by someone named "Belizic" at the NBC site of the Olympics.  Headline:  "U.S. Can Still Win the Olympics".

So...the mindset is that whichever nation takes the most medals "WINS"!

Then, I put in BAMBI II. The producers really tried to match the oil painting look of the original film's artwork, and I found it a sweet, simple little story with one very lovely tune "There Is Life" which opens the show.

It has a great DTS soundtrack option, and it sounds wonderful. I believe I read Disney released this as a theatrical film in Europe, so it has a richer look to it than a lot of their made-for-video animation.

Yes, DR Ron, Irina Slutskya still maintains that she was cheated out of the gold at Salt Lake City, but anyone watching her performance could see how sloppy and desperate a program it was. Like last night, she made numerous changes during the program (always downgrading planned, harder elements) and ended up with some very sloppy jumps and landings. Sarah Hughes landed TWO triple-triple combinations superbly in 2002 in addition to have outstanding spins and lovely choreography.

None of the ladies landed even one triple-triple last night.

I DESPISE the medal count by country and always have. Like others, I have certain athletes I pull for and appreciate regardless of national origin. I also have some I root against, regardless of country.

The medal count makes the Olympics out to be more of a popularity contest than a sports competition.

I don't know maybe it's different in/for the US, but I like seeing the medals distributed by country.  Canada never has a chance to get the most, so everyone is just very excited when any athlete wins a medal.

Counts are fine, in and of themselves.  A lot of times, it's the changing numbers that tell us more of our countrymen have done well.

But far too often, the count is used in terms of "Russia leads", "U.S. slips to second", "U.S. might be on top after tomorrow"...and always with displays of medal counts...no comment about the athletes....just country vs. country.

Watching my MODESTY BLAISE dvd = purchased for $3 on EBAY.  I like the film, but Vitti's performance is just not there for me.  I realize she is acting in a language foreign to her, and it looks like a lot of her dialog was looped....but still....not crazy about the music either.

Back from a good and productive rehearsal - we'll definitely get through the weekend shows just fine.  The structure is very strong, the show is focused, and it's really about something now.  Linda's opening number is what she always does - The Best Is Yet To Come - I reblocked it and had them put a better ending on it.

Word of the day (Mot du jour!)

Fortuosity
That's my byword
Fortuosity
Me twinkle-in-the-eye word

Sometimes castles fall to the ground
But that's where four-leaf clovers are found

Fortuosity, lucky chances
Fortuitious little happy HAPPENSTANCES

I don't worry, 'cause everywhere I see
Every bit of life is lived by Fortuosity

Fortuosity
That's me own word
Fortuosity
Me never-feel-alone word

'Round the corner, under a tree
Good fortune's waiting, just wait and see

Fortuosity, lucky chances
Fortuitious little happy HAPPENSTANCES

I keep smilin' 'cause my philosophy
Is do your best and leave the rest to Fortuosity

-- music & lyrics by the Sherman Brothers; sung by Tommy Steele in The Happiest Millionaire!

Actually, this is what is wrong about the Olympics...moreso now than ever...........................................

<This quote has been edited to save space.>

............................................DOWN WITH MEDAL COUNTS -- the Cold War is OVER!

I agree with you Ron, about the media.  The other night, Bob Costas (who I usually admire) had the nerve to criticize the U.S. Olympic team, in particular the Men's Ski Team, for not living up to the hype that they generated prior to the games.  That they generated?  Give me a break.  It is the networks and the print journalists who scout out all possible Olympic athlethes, to see which ones they can promote, or sell, to the American public.

I am not disappointed with the athletes showing in these games.  On the contrary, I am extremely proud of each and everyone one of them for their talent, their hard work, and their dedication to their individual sports.

George feel better vibes!

We used their kitty litter until one of our cats developed breathing problems.  He was most likely sensitive to begin with but that stuff from there creates too much dust.

Thanks Jane and everyone for the Vibes!  I'm feeling a bit better now and I was actually able to take a nap for a couple of hours after getting back from Costco, but I will certainly sleep well tonight.

I usually got the LitterPurrfect brand at Costco, but they didn't have any.  I had to get the big giant bucket of Scoop Away that claims to be 99.9% dust free.  WRONG!  I dumped it into the cat box and POOF! dust everywhere. :P Fortunately, it settled and Ebonie (my cat) doesn't seem to have a problem with it...so far.

DR GEORGE how is your watch doing?  You ARE Dick Tracy.

My watch works quite well, thanks for asking!  I was actually able to put almost 16 hours worth of songs on it!  I have 291 tracks, although some are fairly short transitions from a live recording.  The other issue is the order in which they play.  They don't play in alphabetical order and my previous MP3 watch only played them in the order in which they were added to the watch...which is rather inconvenient when I want to listen to cast recordings in the correct song order...which is pretty much what I put on the watch.  We'll see.  I printed the song list and I'll keep track if I get a chance to listen for more than a song or two.

I had a very entertaining night of eclectic movie choices.

First up was MR. SKEFFINGTON. I got it for Christmas, and it's been sitting here since then, so I thought it was a good night to watch such a long movie with nothing on TV I wanted to watch.

It's a great transfer with silky black and white images and few if any artifacts that I could see.

I know Bette got an Oscar nomination for the film, but it's never been one of my favorite performances of hers. Oh, it allows her to go through many different periods and to age ungracefully, but I find her acting very studied in this. And she really wasn't beautiful enough at this stage of her career to play a beauty.

Then, because I enjoyed the movie SERENITY so much that I watched a couple of weeks ago, I put in the first disc in the FIREFLY series. I skipped the two hour pilot since I was already familiar with the set-up. After I watched the other episodes (only half a season worth), I'll go back and watch it. There may be different faces or subplots that weren't carried over into the real series since Fox never aired this show.

Very enjoyable like all of Joss Whedon's series.

Was the Canadian skater the blonde in pink from last night?  If so, she was my favorite for the evening.  A truly engaging performance and had everything that everyone else was missing, in my opinion.

Oh, and Danise, it was nice to see you back on the board.  Glad that you are home with your family.

And TPunk, where has Rodzinski been lately? We haven't had an LP of the night for a week now!

I'm off, too.  "Battlestar Galactica" (one of my favorite shows) is about to start, then I'm off to bed.  Goodnight, all!

I just returned from having a nice dinner with this young couple that will be moving in across the hall from me next week.  They both seemed nice enough, and I am not very good at detecting this sort of thing; but I think the guy might be just a little gay.  He said he was "an actor" and he is working as a "librarian"..... what more can you say!

Well, I could give incontestable evidence indicating the true "nature" of the guy in question...but this is, after all, a family site  ;D
