Yep..Bring back style.. If the movies really reflect that period's style DR George - I'd go for those years too.

I also like the Rock and Roll years of the late fifties!

I like the thirties...double-breasted suits.  Tails and white ties.  Elegance, panache.  More importantly actually dressing when you went out for dinner or the theatre.  We still had some sense of personal style beyond just the clothes we wore.

If you're wondering what I'm doing up at this ungodly hour, I've got a cold and can't sleep.  After six months of buying and selling houses, moving, packing and unpacking, furniture buying, bookshelf building, and taking my first business trip to LA, my body has finally told itself: "You've held together long enough, time to let go, let your defenses down, feel free to get sick."

Either that or it was the loser hacking on that petrie dish of an airplane back from LA.

Only thing is: I hate being sick, I hate the common cold worse than anything.  It's always three days coming, three days there, and three days going.  When I was taking garlic capsules regularly, I never seemed to get colds and on the rare occasion when I did, it was gone in three days.

I'm dosing myself with garlic and some pills The Lovely Wife has given me, but I'm still miserably annoyed with this thing.  I am sleeping in the library, so as not to infect The Lovely Wife who is only nine days away from opening as Lady Bracknell.

Tomorrow I will begin dosing myself with some Lem-sip from our cache, but said cache is limited and I've yet to find anyone locally, in any English or Irish gift shop that carries this marvel of a British remedy, so I must use it sparingly, in case The Lovely Wife should follow my lead and also get afflicted with this crud.  Why we don't have the equivalent of Lem-sip on this side of the pond baffles me.  It is the best stuff.

So pray for Rosemary's runny nose, send health vibes, and any other sure-fire remedies that may eradicate this thing from my body and keep the wife from getting it.

I shall now...futilely...try to snatch a few more hours of uncomfortable, stuffy sleep.

I think I remember at the time that Lance and Brian were related but then read in an interview with Brian that they were not.  It was just the same last name and that they had similar coloring, but that they were not related.

And I liked BEGGARS AND CHOOSERS as well.  And James at 15/16 was a nice show.

I have to work today, so I won't be around.  Too many family emergencies.

Congrats on the Tony Dow interview, DRMBARNUM....you know of course that the interior/exterior of the second house of the series was the house from a couple of Rock Hudson movies, John Saxon's movies UNGUARDED MOMENT, ROCK PRETTY BABY, and SUMMER LOVE, and ended up being the Marcus Welby house/office for manys seasons.  It was also just down the street from the Munster house.  And not too far from the Bates Motel.  You might ask him if Gilbert Bates was really named after Norman because they were both so creepy.

Last night I watched CARAVAN - a Bollywood movie that I enjoyed very much.  They spent an excruciating 25 minutes setting up a complex plot....then forgot all about the plot for 1 hour and 33 minutes while everyone sang and danced - and then spent another 45 minutes tying up the plot threads, while everyone sang and danced and got shot.

And it was in COLOR!!

I think, as George mentioned, the 20s and the 40s both had style and good looking fashion. The 70s and 80s produced some of the ugliest fashions in recent memory (although some stuff from the 60s creep in there as well).

Oh I forgot the TOD!

I agree with the previous posters that the 30's and 40's had some great styles.  And I like the idea of dressing up for special evenings as well.

I will cast my vote for 1958-1960.  The clothes worn by Doris and Rock and Tony in PILLOW TALK and Lana Turner in IMITATION OF LIFE.  MIDNIGHT LACE and THE RELUCTANT DEBUTANTE and THIS HAPPY FEELING - INDISCREET and NORTH BY NORTHWEST.  All of those nice suits and beautiful dresses with fur trim and wild prints and fitted skirts with kick pleats and hats....and evening gowns and tuxedoes and white dinner jackets.....

As for "Barbara Cook & Elaine Stritch: In Alphabetical Order"...

The scheduled start time was 7:00.  However...  When we were heading into the theatre, I noticed that there were still many(!) ticket envelopes at the Guest Check-In table, and even after the "chimes" had sounded a couple of times, there were still a lot of people milling about the lobby, chatting and enjoying a pre-show cocktail (or two).  Well...

Eric Stern and Rob Bowman and their bandmates hit the stage at 7:10.  They tuned.  And then they sat there.  For a while.  We all sat there.  However, it did provide an opportunity for me to do a good scan of the audience - we ended up with a great seats: first row, center loge - basically dead center with the stage.  In any case, I was able to spy Marvin Hamlisch, Jonathan Hadary, Nathan Lane, Jonathan Butterell, and a couple of "society people".

Well, around 7:20 the lights dimmed, Eric Stern started the vamp, and Barbara Cook came out...

"I hear singing and there's no one there..."

Then, after her verse, Elaine Stritch made her entrance...

"You don't need analyzin'..."
*And I also caught Rob Bowman switching places at the piano for Ms. Stritch's verse.  :)

LOTS OF APPLAUSE!

:)

Then after an extended patter/scripted section (credited to the director of the evening, Jack O'Brien), Elaine Stritch sang the following:

"I Wanna Get Married"
-Followed by a monolog of sorts recounting some of her various affairs and indiscretions.
"Why Him?"
"I’ve Been to a Marvelous Party"
-Which included a couple of interpolations between each verse, recounting more of her various affairs and indiscretions.
"But Not for Me"/"If Love Were All"

Then more patter... Then Barbara Cook sang:

"I’m Beginning to See the Light"
"Ain’t Love Easy"
"Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man" (segued into...)
"Bill"
"Ac-cent-tchuate the Positive"

Then they reprised their duet from Barbara Cook's Met Concert a few weeks ago:
"The Grass Is Always Greener"

Then Elaine requested that Barbara sing:
"Losing My Mind"

Then Barbara requested that Elaine sing:
"50 Percent"

Then in closing:
"There’s No Business Like Show Business"

And as they were taking their bows, I noticed that Elaine Stritch signaled her pianist, Rob Bowman, to go back to the top.   And then I watched as Rob and Eric started to dig out the chart from the pile on the piano and/or the floor, for one final reprise of:

"You’re Just in Love"

Speakingof Dennis Weaver... several years ago I saw a documentary about him and the his wife and the house they built.  It was very interesting.  The walls were all made of tires packed with dirt and stacked on one another and then the whole thing was plastered over.  The end result was "different" but not unpleasing .

I also liked BEGGARS & CHOOSERS very much. I didn't have Showtime back then, but a friend used to tape episodes for me when he would think about it, and once I got Showtime, they would occasionally rerun them on one of the sister Showtime channels and I'd catch some of them then, too.

Why haven't they come out with DVDs of the show, I wonder?

Funny thing about those seats...

My friend, James, who ended up treating me to last night's concert :), had noticed those tickets on Tele-Charge too earlier in the day.  "So, are you interested in going?"  -Well...  And those seats were still available when he checked the site at 5:30...

After some waffling on my part, we decided just to head to the box office closer to show time to see what was available - and also to see if they were going to offer any rush ticket discounts - which Lincoln Center does on a regular basis.

When we hit the Box Office window at 6:50, we ended up with the same Front Row, Loge seats that had been on Tele-Charge all day.  And, again, they were great seats.

It did not appear they were papering since there were still couple of empty seats on the fringes of the theatre.  However, it was sort of easy to determine who was there for the "Benefit" and who was there for the "Concert" - Tux/Gown vs. No Tux/No Gown.

However, James had noticed that when the event was first posted on some "Entertainment Calendar", it was listed under "Avery Fisher Hall", and not the smaller "Vivian Beaumont".  Hmm...  And since the public press releases did not come out until the past few days... He was wondering if the event was supposed to play Avery Fisher Hall, but was then transferred to the Beaumont after lack of ticket sales.  But, then again, it was a benefit for Lincoln Center Theatre, so...

In any case, we both enjoyed the concert very much, and the dinner afterwards at Il Divino was very nice too.

:)

Jose - I don't know what was planned before Feb. 16th.  But the "cheap" tickets went on sale on Feb. 16th, and at that point, it was definitely clear that the seat locations they were selling were at the Beaumont.   I had bought a few tix (for the friends who watched our dogs the other day while we were on our trip) and the charge slip is dated Feb. 16th and the locations then were clearly Beaumont locations.  I think the dinner after the show was always planned to be within Avery Fisher Hall somewhere.  I think that had this show not been so soon after Cook's sold-out appearance at the Met and Stritch's heralded stint at the Carlyle, ticket sales (especilaly the benefit tix) would have been even better.  But there was some feeling of "Oh, just did that a few weeks ago" among the ardent fans of both Cook and Stritch, as far as I could gather.

All in all, it really was a wonderful evening.  And even though the whole concert lasted just about 90 minutes, it was not too short (nor too long).

The patter/scripted sections were fun, and helped set up the whole "let's make this whole evening seem impromptu" premise.

The pairing of performers was also revelatory.  Barbara Cook is undoubtedly the better singer/vocalist, but Elaine Stritch's story-telling can't be beat.  -And her rendition of "50 Percent" had me tearing up a couple of times - and it was also nice to hear the verse again.  Each lady was able to showcase her strengths, and there was a genuine sense of camaraderie between them.

For me, the whole evening was sort of like a homecoming for me.  I had first come to really notice - and really love - both performers through the "Follies in Concert" recording.  And since that was performed and recorded just across the plaza at Avery Fisher Hall...

And a big(!) smile came across my face as soon as I heard the intro to "Accentuate the Positive"...  I remember Barbara Cook performing that arrangement many years ago on some late-night, local talk-show in DC with her beloved Wally Harper at the piano.  I loved it the first time I heard it, and I fell in love with again last night.
Title: Re:NAMELY MARCH
Post by: JoseSPiano on February 28, 2006, 07:59:39 AM
...It was also fun watching how each lady dealt with lyric and rhythmic flubs.

:)

*And I have a feeling Ms. Stritch wanted to reprise "You're Just In Love" in order to get the entrance for the counterpoint section correct.  Alas, it was Ms. Cook who ended up two beats off the second time round.  ;)

I could actually sense that last night too.  There were a couple of people wondering aloud what each lady would perform last night... Would Ms. Cook sing what she sang a few weeks ago at The Met?  Would Ms. Stritch do an abbreviated version of "At Liberty"?  However, everyone seemed to be pleased with the final product

As for favorite era of clothing...

I'm also a fan of the 20's and 40's.  However, after seeing the idealized version of the 50's that Martin Pakledinaz came up with for Damn Yankees - and the current Broadway revival of The Pajama Game, I wouldn't mind the 50's either.

Hey all everybody!

Sorry to be so e & t the past couple of days, but I've had a bout of a 24 hour stomach flu--four bouts of a 24 hour stomach flu, in fact.  And when I felt up to catching up and posting yesterday, would you know it?--the electricity in my neighborhood was shut off for a few hours.  So on top of feeling sick, I had to sit by candlelight listening to Philly broadcast radio (the absolute worst!) while the temperature in my drafty old house tumbled down to 60 degrees before the power finally came back.

Anyway, there have been a few bright spots.  Yesterday I saw JOAN OF PARIS for the first time on TCM.  What a movie!  Audiences must have gone wild when this played in 1942.  Today I will treat myself to OLIVER which I Tivo'ed last night.

Why Parents Drink

A boss wondered why one of his most valued employees had not phoned in sick one day. Having an urgent problem with one of the main computers, he dialed the employee's home phone number and was greeted with a child's whisper.

"Hello?"

"Is your daddy home?" he asked.

"Yes," whispered the small voice.

May I talk with him?"

The child whispered, "No."

Surprised and wanting to talk with an adult, the boss asked, "Is your Mommy there?"

"Yes."

"May I talk with her?"

Again the small voice whispered, "No."

Hoping there was somebody with whom he could leave a message, the boss asked, "Is anybody else there?"

"Yes," whispered the child, "a policeman".

Wondering what a cop would be doing at his employee's home, the boss asked, "May I speak with the policeman?"

"No, he's busy", whispered the child.

"Busy doing what?"

"Talking to Daddy and Mommy and the Fireman," came the whispered answer.

Growing more worried as he heard a loud noise in the background through the earpiece on the phone, the boss asked, "What is that noise?"

"A helicopter" answered the whispering voice.

"What is going on there?" demanded the boss, now truly apprehensive.

Again, whispering, the child answered, "The search team just landed a helicopter."

Alarmed, concerned and a little frustrated the boss asked, "What are they searching for?"

Still whispering, the young voice replied with a muffled giggle... "ME."

and this one is sent with love to Der Brucer

One day a fourth-grade teacher asked the children what their fathers did for a living. All the typical answers came up-- fireman, mechanic, businessman, salesman, doctor, lawyer, and so forth.

But little Justin was being uncharacteristically quiet, so when the teacher prodded him about his father, he replied, "My father's an exotic dancer in a gay cabaret and takes off all his clothes in front of other men and they put money in his underwear.  Sometimes, if the offer is really good, he will go home with some guy and make love with him for money."

The teacher, obviously shaken by this statement, hurriedly set the other children to work on some exercises and then took little Justin aside to ask him, "Is that really true about your father?"

"No," the boy said, "He actually works for the Democratic National Committee and is helping to secure the nomination of Hilary Clinton, but I was too embarrassed to say that in front of the other kids."

I'm certain you've already looked into it, but you can always order online.

This outfit ships internationally:

And while we are on the topic of politics:

Is there no one in the United States Congress capable of explaining to President Bush that the concept of a foreign entiity such as the United Arab Emirates "operating" our ports, having ANY role whatsoever in HOW our ports operate, is NOT OKAY.

NOT OKAY....

NOT SINCE 9/11.

The very notion that this president THINKS it's okay negates everything that 9/11 did to this country and everything he has done, the good and the mostly bad, in reaction to it.

It doesn't matter if the U.A.E. is an ally.  It doesn't matter if the U.A.E. would "only" be "operating" the port.

The idea that this president would endorse an Arab nation managing U.S. ports is like pouring salt into the "9/11 wound" of the national psyche.

It should frighten every thinking U.S. citizen that he thinks it's OK.

It must be considered as one of the single MOST STUPID things ANY administration has ever tried to spin.

I am absolutely the worst person in the world to talk about clothing. I care not for current styles or what's fashionable. I want to be comfortable. I wear clothes until they wear out regardless of whether they're in style or not.

I will say that the beautiful clothes that Doris Day always wore in her romantic comedies from folks like Irene and Jean Louis were very chic and stylish and looked sensational on her.

Isn't it funny in that LOVELY TO LOOK AT lobby card that they seated Gower Champion on the row above Marge? At that stage of their careers, they operated as a team, so placing him a step above her on the same level with Zsa Zsa whose role in LOVELY TO LOOK AT amounted to little more than guzzling champagne and laughing like a airhead is very surprising.

DR Jose, "I Wanna Get Married" was originally sung by Gertrude Niesen in the show "Follow the Girls," I believe.

Well, I had my concerned email from DR Ginny, and I am okay.  For some reason - hybernatorial, health, depression(?), q'est que-ce - I don't know, I could not/did not want to leave my bed this morning.  So around 10:45, I decided to rise, see what fresh hell awaits, and go from there.  I spent about an hour transferring email files and now I have to work on the new Babes in Toyland libretto for a while with the three 1903-1908 versions.

TOD:  look at my photos, look at this body, haute couture and I were never chums.  Even at my best dressed people think I've just arrived from my coal barge.

Geez, I wish you could dub the skating events from the past two weeks at the Olympics onto DVD-Rs for me.

I have the tapes, the DVD-Rs and the machine...what it takes is time, time, time...and patience....

I've done the opening ceremony, a special DVD on "Olympic Ice" and all the pairs, short and long programs.

I've still got the long and short men's, the three ice dancing programs and the women's programs to do.

And I'm only doing the top-level skaters...but it takes "real time" and forever.

When I was little and saw them on TV, and my sister had some paper dolls, I was convinced that Marge & Gower Champion were brother and sister because I never saw them be romantic at all.  They were more of a dance team, I guess, than a dance couple.....

Instead, I began the afternoon viewing with last night's CSI: MIAMI a good case and some excellent interaction between team members. I love the balance the CSIs have attained about giving us personal stuff mixed with the cases. The shows are 90% about the cases they're investigating, but there is every week the 10% where we get little peeps behind the facades of the team members. Keeps them all interesting and makes me always eager to find out more.

Phase I of our Stormy Week has moved out and we have seen a transition from the Pineapple Express which brought torrential rains and winds and warm air (highs in 60s) to today's off-and-on blue skies-dark skies with strong breezes and a considerable drop in temperature as a storm from the Arctic moves down upon us.

Tomorrow is supposed to be really bad weather (as apposed to what we just had!!!), but only time will tell.

I see that THE APPRENTICE bowed to its lowest numbers ever on Monday night - not quite 10 million viewers. I'm guessing NBC will let it sit in that timeslot one more week and then move LAS VEGAS back to Monday and let THE APPRENTICE head to Friday.

So how many people here will watch tonight's 2 hour premiere of THE AMAZING RACE?  I know I can't wait.  This is one of my absolute favorite shows!

I'm not.  I actually have never watched more than a minute or two of this show.  Not that I think it's a bad show or anything like that...it's just caught my attention.  Although, I do (and did, last night) watch "The Apprentice."  That's a guilty pleasure. ;)

When Chip and Reichen won THE AMAZING RACE, that was it for me. I couldn't stand the tension and pressure. I was losing sleep worrying about how my favorites were going to do. (Same thing happened with SURVIVOR.) I simply get too caught up in the drama of it all, and with well produced games like RACE and SURVIVOR, it's hard NOT to care, to have rooting interests.

So, I've left all but IDOL behind now.

Yes DRMATTH - Smoke Gets In Your Eyes from the aforementioned LOVELY TO LOOK AT is very romantic, but I didn't see it until recently.

I only knew them from their names and appearances on shows like THE BELL TELEPHONE HOUR - and the ONLY married celebrities I knew of were Lucy and Desi.  And even married people like Howard Duff and Ida Lupino aka Mr Adams & Eve had different last names, so my mind decided Marge & Gower were brother and sister.

DRMBARNUM - Monica didn't die in CARAVAN, did she?  The last I saw of her she was tied up and rolled off the bed onto the floor....but I might have missed something.  She had a great number that could have taught Ann-Margret a thing or two....and she did get the DVD cover picture!

I believe that Monica lived to dance another day...at least as far as I could tell!

DH Richard and I just finished a hearty dinner of beef stew that he had made a while back and we'd frozen.  I made fresh biscuits to go with it.  This was our second meal of the day - for brunch I fried bacon in my cast iron skillet and then scrambled eggs in the same pan - yum!  Our garbage disposal has also eaten well today, because I cleared the fridge of some tired leftovers and expired dairy products.

If you paid with a credit card, the store (I assume that you got it at a store and not on-line) might (should?) still have a record of the transaction and let you get a new set since it's defective and not just something that you didn't like.  It certainly couldn't hurt to ask.  Good luck!

AMERICAN IDOL spoilers - - - - -

I found it for the most part an off night for the vocalists. For a change, I agreed with the judges. The singers have mostly fine voices, but song selection tonight left me feeling unsatisfied even with the best vocalists in the competition.

Among the worst have to be Heather (a beautiful girl with the most average voice remaining among the ladies) and the obnoxious, annoying, and mediocre Brenna.

Brenna marked her way through "Last Dance" and then proclaimed that it was an excellent performance! I'm glad SHE enjoyed it. I hope folks aren't keeping her around just for controversy sake or to see what further braying she can do about her talent and looks. She has GOT to go.

For me, the best performance of the night, and the most surprising compared to her quavery performance last week, was Ayla.

I believe selections from that album - and other accordion orchestras - pop up on www.spaceagepop.com from time to time.
