Hmmmm....

Toy from my childhood:  Probably my Anniversary Monopoly set.  The one that had the "carousel" that held the cards.  I loved that set, and took very good care of it.  I even ironed the money when it got too wrinkled!  All in all, I wasn't too much of a "toy kid" - at least I don't think I was.  But I really liked board games (yesterday's topic), and "kits" - science, plants, etc.

As for the TV shows... I haven't really seen any of the new ones on the major networks.  But cable-wise, I am a "Six Feet Under" fan (not so new anymore), and I like the original, BBC version of "Coupling".  Yes, it's very shallow and filled with sexual innuendo, but it's done well, imho.  I tried to like "The Office", but I guess it's just too droll for me.  I've like some of what I've seen, but not all of it.

WOW!  It's 3:45AM EST and I'm still wired - ?!?!!?!?

I really should try to get some sleep....

First of all, many thanks to all my HHW friends for all the good vibes for opening night!  HHW truly has the ginchiest folks around.

I'm happy to report that the vibes helped, and we had a very successful opening night.  Played to a sold out house, everything was solid musically and dramatically, our tech glitches from the last couple rehearsals were ironed out, and it was just an all-around good show.  The audience was VERY receptive and appreciative, which always makes things more fun.  Our director was quite pleased, and deservedly so.  It's been her first directing job, and she's really done very well.  If I didn't know she hadn't directed before, I'd never have had a clue.

Must now read the new notes and comment on the topic(s) de jour...

Oh, and this gives me my Sr. Member 4th star!

Childhood toys?  Wow... that's a toughie.  I was never really much of a toy kid.  Was much more often reading or doing something else, and didn't really have much in the toy department.  Maybe I'll think of something later...

Newer TV shows?  Most of the newer shows I've seen are pure dreck.  That said, I am a fan of Without A Trace, now in its second season.  Just about any other show I can stomach has been on for at least four years or so.

Must be off to bed... 2 shows tomorrow.

First -- from yesterday:

CD player in my car:  Jeepers Creepers (hadn't heard it in a few weeks)

Second, Jed, congratulations on a successful opening night.  How did your tights hold up?

Back later.

Catching up from last night: DR Ron, you are priceless! "Laying a fine table" indeed! No comment necessary.

Favorite toy from childhood: Well, the one I remember the most fondly was a Robby the Robot mechanical man toy that could move and talk. Low tech for these times, but ultra high tec for 1957 or so.

Of the new shows this season, the trashest fun is LAS VEGAS on NBC. Lots of good looking men and women, glitzy settings, several storylines per episode that all get wrapped up neatly before the end of the hour. It's on Monday night.

Best new drama that I've seen is COLD CASE by the producers of CSI and WITHOUT A TRACE. This is on CBS on SUnday nights, and the show revolves around investigations of old cases in trying to give closure to families of old victims.

Comedy with the most potential is IT'S ALL RELATIVE on ABC, Wednesday nights. A young couple becomes engaged but their respective families are anything but receptive since they come from such varied backgrounds. His family is Irish Catholic working class who run a neighborhood pub. Her family is two upscale gay dads who raised her from age 6. It's a variation of ABIE'S IRISH ROSE for the new millenium. The show began the season as basically an insult show with each side firing shots back and forth at each other, but the show is slowly evolving as the two sides get to know and trust each other slowly. The cast is made up of great Broadway talent: John Benjamin Hickey, Harriet Sansom Harris, and Christopher Sieber. I have great hopes for it as it matures and settles into a more sophisticated groove.

Speaking of Robby the Robot, who else besides me is anticipating a new special edition of FORBIDDEN PLANET in 2004? I have loved this movie since I was a kid, and am SO hoping the new special edition (1) gets the original aspect ratio right for the movie, (2) has a new transfer that cleans up some dirt and other problems and punches up the lousy Eastman Color from the laserdisc I have, (3) has tons of extras on the fantastic special effects which really were state of the art at the time.

I really don't watch much television and have not seen any of the new television shows, but was surprised that Lyon's Den did not make it. HOWEVER I was channel surfing was trying to find something to watch and FOX had a special program about bloopers from around the world. Mostly taken from news cast and talk shows and some from series programs.. Most of them were from England, Australia and New Zealand. But some of them were so funny and I must have been in the right frame of mind that I laughed so hard that I cried and I cannot remember the last time I did that!!!

Did you ever see the Australian version of the British series Are You Being Served? It was with John Inman who was in the British version.

While going through my parents basement before moving down to the USA I came across a pseudo toy and decided to take it with me. It was a contraption that pumped air into balloons. Nothing really special except that name and as an adult it has a totally different meaning. Instead of describing it I decided to take a photo of it.

I watched THE LYON'S DEN before it was taken off. The series set-up was fine, but the mix of ongoing stories (a murder within the firm and underhanded dealings between partners trying to ruin one another) and cases that wrapped up within the episode just wasn't handled smoothly. I could see people being VERY confused if they didn't start with the series from the first episode.

BTW, in reference to the poster (Maya?) who mentioned that the Captain Kangaroo picture I posted didn't look like the one she remembered. I amended the photo to say that this was the 1950s incarnation of the Captain. His look (like all of us) evolved over the years. That's the Captain I remember, but I doubt it's the one most would remember unless you're my age.

Maybe that was part of the problem that the cases were wrapped up at the end of each episode. perhaps they should have been a story arc that went a few episodes.

Good question of the day. There are two childhood toys I'd love to have. The first is my puppet theater. I was a rather solitary child and my favorite thing in the world was to put on puppet shows for an imaginary audience. I'd crouch in the back, open the curtains to great fanfare and do the show. This was in our apartment in Budapest - before the Ruskies torched the place. Sometimes my older cousin, Janos, would take part in these shows, but mostly it was just moi, the puppets and the imagined crowd. When we escaped from Hungary I could take very little with me - so an entire theater was out of the question. I still think of it whenever I see anything resembling it in a toy store.
The other toy (get out your handkerchiefs) was a stuffed monkey my father gave me just before he died. The monkey I did carry with me when we escaped. And I promptly lost it in Vienna. I was devastated. When we came to Canada, I saw a kid with a toy monkey on the plane and pointed it out to my mother. She went out and bought one just like it. I never gave it a name - it was just "Monkey" and I slept with it every night for years. It was so worn that my mother made a totally new "skin" for it from the lining of an old faux-fur coat. Monkey I still have.
As for new TV shows - I haven't seen any of them. Don't watch much TV. I'm going to try to watch (or tape) ANGELS IN AMERICA on HBO on Sunday.

No, it was me who made that comment. I think the picture that was posted today by Michael Shayne is much closer to what i remember (I guess I used to watch it in the 70s). But I don't remember him wearing a suit :)

New tv shows to recommend to BK.  Well I'm not so sure that the same type of shows would interest us.  I'm not about to recommend my favorite Gilmore Girls to you :)

One show that just started this year, which I like (and which is quite different) is Nip/Tuck. I started watching it because the lead character used to play Cole on Charmed. It is definitely not for children.  It's been playing a few months behind here on CTV.

Speaking of being behind on shows, I cannot wait to watch last night's season finale of Sex & The City (we watch on Bravo, 3 months behind the US schedule).

I was just commenting that it will be tortuous for me when the new season starts in the US. Because we will be 3 months behind. And when you guys get the series finale, I will not be able to see it, yet I will probably hear all about it. How depressing is that!

We had the same trouble with OZ at the Christopher Meloni forum. Canada was usually a season behind or three to six months behind us, so a separate thread was set up for us to discuss the episodes so Candians wouldn't be tipped off what happened. I suspect we'll just watch and keep quiet about it. There are only 8 episodes I go for us. They start back up in January.

Good chilly morning!  It's now 10:26 AM and it's 46 degrees here in the land of sunshine.

Toys: Oy, That’s a hard one.  I loved my Johnny & Jane West dolls.  Anyone remember them?  I remember my horse, Thunderbolt, came out of the box with a broken tail.  My parents wanted to take him back but I was so upset as to what would happen to him, I kept him and loved him all the more for it.   I guess I took the story about the Island of Misfit Toys to heart.  I didn’t want him to go there.

I confess I was a spoiled brat when it came to toys.  My parents were very good to me.  I had the Barbies and all the clothes, dolls, dolls and more dolls,  stuffed animals a mile high, the Robot from Lost In Space, Frankenstein’s Monster (who walked and talked), Bryer Horses, the Jolly Green Giant that you could put elastic on over your feet so you could dance with him,  to name just a little.  There was more and God only knows where it all is now.  :)

Favorite New show:  I'd have to say Joan of Aracadia.  I only started watching it because I'm such a JAG fan and since JAG now comes on Friday at 9 now, I figured I was just killing an hour until it came on.

Now that I've started watching Joan, I find I really like it.  It's about a girl who talks to God.  God can show up as anything, a bum on the street, a lady walking her dog, a kid on the playground, etc.  you never know and He always wants her to do something.  You & Joan don't understand why at the time but it always turns out.  You might want to give it a look see.

Glad to hear that Jed had a good show.  Isn’t it a shame you have to break a leg to do that?

Well, I’ve GOT to work on my Christmas cards today.  I have a few gifts to pack and mail also.

Have a good day.  Be warm and safe.  Posters and lurkers both.  We can't have anyone being sick like last week.

D

Another show that's only two years old that I would heartily recommend is MONK. USA airs the original episodes, and I read recently that ABC is once again going to broadcast reruns during the second half of the season, but not sure if that's going to start in December or January.

It has to do with a detective who has obsessive/compulsive disorder and how he manages to solve his cases despite an almost debilitating handicap. The mysteries aren't usually the most important things about the show, but it's a real showcase for actor Tony Shaloub who won last year's Emmy for his performance.

Good morning DRs  --

And a sunny Phoenix G'morning to dear esteemed, suave, and working-on-the-weekend BK --

First, the QOTD ;  well, this will be terribly obscure, but as far as childhood toys, the one that stands out in my mind was one that I played with at a friends house, but never had my own.  It sounds something like what DR Panni was talking about;  it was a very elaborate puppet theatre, but not the marionette variety.  These puppets were supported on sticks that you could move around, via slots and openings in the stage floor.  The whole thing was beautifully crafted, and I'm pretty sure fairly expensive.  Strangely, I can still remember the brand name of the puppet set...."Baps" .  I seem to think it was made in Scandanavia somewhere.

DR Jed --  Congratulations on your opening last night.  I hope the run is a good one.

DR Jose --  Yes, you assumed correctly yesterday...if you don't drive carefully and take care of yourself, you will indeed be punished.  You will be flown to Arizona, and you will be made to play "The Randy Vicar and The Young Piano Student".....and I'm the Vicar!!   So there, that should be enough to put the fear of Allah into you!

The snow is here.  While it is not nearly as bad as the media makes it seem we did change our Musicals Tonight tickets (the Gershwin's PRIMROSE in its North American premiere) for next week.  And we can't put the lights on the terrace but can get the indoor decorations done (except the tree which we'll get closer to Christmas).  By the way, even if you aren't in New York to see their shows you should check out the Musicals Tonight website (www.Musicalstonight.org).  It's very well designed and informative.

I don't want any toys back - I want my old comic books.  Who knew how much they would be worth.

As for new television shows, try HOPE AND FAITH (Fridays at 9:00 - 8:00 Central - on ABC).  Kelly Ripa and Faith Ford are very funny (almost as funny as Lucy and Ethel - more like Laverne and Shirley without some of their awful supporting cast - NOT GUEST STARS, BK ).  As for the most improved old show, catch THE PRACTICE (Sundays at 10:00 - 9:00 Central - on ABC).  James Spader has turned it into a whole new show.  And if you missed them originally, catch the Sharon Stone arc in re=runs.

My second favorite toys were always the science and experiment type of stuff.  I was (okay, still am) fascinated with anything that resembles parts of Frankenstein's laboratory, or the flight deck of a StarCruiser.

I guess this explains, maybe, why I play the type of instrument that I do....

DR Jrand --

HUGE  THANKS AND GRATITUDE !!

We received the most fabulous package from DR Jrand yesterday afternoon....and last night, we watched the opening TV show.......a vintage "Queen For A Day" that had me on the floor.  I had forgotten just how mis-matched the prizes were to the possible recipients.  A Ship 'n Shore outfit that looked fabulous on Miss Jeanne Cagney, would hardly do the same for some gal with a sad story, too many chores to do, and no waistline left.

The funniest part of the contestants stories, was the one lady (she didn't win) who, with a perfectly innocent staight face, said that she wanted "bunking gear" and extra beds.  She explained that she needed
this because both of her sons were in the Navy, and on weekends they always brought lots of their Navy buddys home to stay over, and often times they had to sleep 4 in a bed...........

Do I have to say anymore..........?

Apologies to the younger DRs and those easily shocked.  But to quote Anna Russell, "I'm not making this up you know!"

Jack, thanks a million for your thoughtfullness.  I'll see if I can get you a weekend stay at "The Park Carleton"......do you remember that one?

Good morning, DRs!  Today is going to be a very un-fun Saturday for me...I have to go get my flu shot (this is our THIRD attempt...the waiting room was too filled the other times) and then work on two college applications, one for JMU and the other for Nothern Kentucky University.

I was a very girly little girl.  I suppose I had a few GI Joes and Hot Wheels cars and things like that, but mostly I played with My Little Ponies, Polly Pockets, and Barbies.

If I ever have a little girl, I don't think I would go out of my way to buy her Barbies.  I think they are just too destructive on the formative feminine ego.  Well, at least they were when I was growing up and just about all of them were your standard blond hair-blue eye beauties and came in such guises as Movie/Rock Star Barbie, Nurse Barbie, Beach Barbie, Cheerleader Barbie.  How about Corporate CEO Barbie, Doctor Barbie, Professor Barbie, PRESIDENT Barbie.

Oh god...I went and turned an innocent discussion on toys into feminist propoganda!  Go me!

As for today's other topic, I can't really comment too much because I've been too busy to watch a lot of prime time.  I stick with my tried and true favorites...Six Feet Under, Sex and the City, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Will and Grace.  As for the new shows, I DID see Hope and Faith and agree with WEL that it's quite well done.  Somehow Kelly Ripa annoys me less here than she does with Regis.

Jed--I'm so glad that your opening night went well!  WE MUST HAVE PICTURES OF YOUR CUTE SPECTERY SELF.

As for the topics of the day:  I used to have a "Time Machine" that had little plastic squares where you heated them up in the "Time Chamber" (it was a heating element covered by a wire mesh! with a plastic cover that held the heat in) and they became the monsters.  After they cooled, you could play with the monsters.  When you were done, you heated them back up in the time chamber then squished them back into the squares by a press that was part of the whole thing.  VERY unsafe by today's standards...well, probably by anyone's standards.

As for new shows, I watch "Jake 2.0," mainly because it comes after Star Trek: Enterprise.  I try to watch the new Ellen DeGeneres talk show, but I usually forget to tape it.  I also like "Hope and Faith."  Other than that, I don't watch many new shows.  I have my favorites, but most of those are much older.

I agree about The Practice. It is a totally new show this season.  It is basically the James Spader show. But he is so good, he makes it fun to watch.

Oh and btw, WEL, in case you didn't catch yesterday's later notes, Mark solved your search problem.  If you do an ADVANCED SEARCH (instead of a regular one) apparently you can go back further.

Your comments about being a girly girl reminded me of a scene I witnessed last night at the Dollar Store (Dollarama for DRs Emily & Andrea).  This little girl was standing behind me in line.  She came up and showed her dad what she wanted to purchase (the dollar store is great, because everything is a dollar, so parents can let their kids buy whatever they want).  Anyhow she showed up with this bizarre packaged GI Joe type thing with guns in it.

Now, I can't even imagine a little boy loving this. But it just seemed like such a weird item for a little girl to want.  Her dad was not happy saying something about how he didn't like her having guns, and didn't she have stuff like that already. But I think he was more perplexed why she kept wanting these little boy items.

As for Barbies, I don't mind them. I always liked playing with them when I was little.  I sort of like how they don't all look the same now.  My sister's niece has dark brown/black hair. And when buying her Christmas gifts I was able to buy dolls that looked just like her!

Good morning all.
I slept a good eight hours last night, from about 2 to 10...wow that felt good.
Toys...well, there are a few that stand out in my mind.  The first was a porecilan doll that my grandmother bought me the day I went in for my first operation when I was eight.  The operation part wasn't that big of a deal (I would have seven others in the next 10 years) but this grandmother NEVER bought unpractical gifts, so a doll was amazing coming from her.
The next was a Popple.  Does anyone here remember Popples?  I loved mine...it was white with purple on the face...I loved tucking it up into itself.
The third...well, Barbies.  I confess...I played with Barbies.  I am living proof that little girls can play with Barbies and have their self esteem relatively intact (Shut up, Jed) But I guess I didn't play with them in a normal way.  I had and still have a tremendous imagination, and my Barbies were always involved in long and complex stories, either historically set or modern day, depending on my mood.  They were always doing stuff like rescuing animals, raising children alone, exploring new countries, etc...if they were princesses, they were princesses in hiding, who had to work as maid to hide their identity, or something like that.  Whether all this was a mark of my mother's feminist influence or my lack of Ken dolls, I will never know...

I thought there was a running theme-who killed the man that previously had the job Rob Lowe’s character replaced.  I didn’t know the show was cancelled.  We were about to stop watching anyway-just wanted to know who the murderer was.

My favorite toys were a stuffed elephant I always slept with and my Ginny Alexander doll I received for my fourth birthday.  I still have the doll and should have the elephant.  I know I had it when we moved here but can’t find it now.

Danise I agree with Joan of Acadia.  I find Joan very appealing.

Matt H I agree with Monk, though technically it isn’t a new show.  I also like Peace Makers, another show on USA.  I’m waiting for both shows to return.

We are having company for tonight and I must get to work preparing dinner

I adored barbies, and I echo DR Ann's comment that they did nothing to my self esteem. I had many different coloured-haired barbies and infact, I often punked up the blonde ones and made them into villans! My story lines were always about Joe (cause I had the NKOTB dolls) trying to convince my poor maid servant barbie to get married, and her refusing until he loaded her up with jewlery... Other times it was corporate barbie in power suits and heels who would be the recipient of attention from an underling.

Actually... maybe it did affect me cause I have a strange affinity for jewlery and power.

I am back from the worst day of work ever.

There were NO phone calls at all for me to answer.  Not one.  Not even my boss calling to check up on me. It actually made this summer's infamous  "least seen press conference ever" seem like a media frenzy.

I did data entry for four hours straight and was bored out of my mind.

It is god-awfully cold here, too!  Just a little snow started to fall a half hour or so ago, but othewise we are in pure Nanuk of the North mode.  Currently it is -8C (19F) with the all important windchill at -18C (1F). That is coooooooooooollllllldddd...

I'm also feeling slightly nauseous which I am desperately hoping is NOT the start of the flu or a cold.  I can not get sick during exams!  It's just undoable!

On the upside I discovered that adding egg-nog to tea and/or coffee instead of sugar and cream/milk make it taste yummy!  Woohoo!  I should be a chef. :)

WE HAVE SNOW!

So far, we've had about an inch or so here in Rehoboth Beach.  Buster and Bonnie are having a wonderful time, running outside and playing tag.  (They haven't gotten around to making snowmen, but they don't have opposable thumbs, just dew claws, so snowmen might be beyond their reach.)

If last night was a good night for soup, this will probably be a good night for stew.  I might have to trudge to the store for some veggies, but that will be fun in it's way.

TOYS: I admit I miss my old Teddy, or more rightfully Teodore (no "h").  He was a big 'un, and a good friend when I was quite young.  By the end he was quite ragged and missing an eye, the way all proper teddys should look.

NEW SHOWS: I'm not the television watcher; that's der Brucer's role in the family.  This is partly because I'm not really interested in the new shows, and partly because we're in the habit of late dinners and I'm the chef.  Der Brucer does like I Married Joan of Arcadia and Cold Cut Case this year.

My favourite toys as kids were various sets of plastic men...I had a knight set, I had a Captain Gallant Foreign Legion Set, I had a Civil War set, Roy Rogers Ranch Set, A Farm Set, dinosaur set...these always came with a building of some sort --barn, castle, fort, ranch house.  I got hours of fun from them.  Once I hid some Indians from my cowboys in one of those adjustable cone lamps on a pole.  My Indians melted somewhat and I had the most interesting tribe of deformed Indians you ever saw.  Another time I took my Roy Rogers to share in kindergarten.  He got lost; a big trauma for me, but he showed up a few days later...some kid had painted him.

I also had several of those Hartland Western Figurines, mostly cowboys that came on a horse and had removable hats and saddles and guns and in the case of my favourites, Robert E. Lee and General George Custer, removable swords that they could hold.  Needless to say, I played with them a lot and they didn't stay in very good  condition.  The swords were the first to go, replaced by those little sword-martini-skewers for olives and pearl onions.  but stirrups broke off saddles, guns were lost, paint got chipped.  I've still got my Robert E. Lee, sans stirrups and sword, but with his hat, the rest of his saddle, and Traveller, his horse with a chipped ear.  Had I taken care of these figurines they'd probably be worth hundreds of dollars today.  Of course, that could be said of almost any of the toys I had.  Unfortunately, these things all seem to disappear when you have younger siblings and cousins who get them handed down or your mother just pitches them when they get too tatty.  I think somewhere in my mother's home is still a basket with the remanents of various soldiers and cowboys and whatnot from all the  sets I had over the years.  What I really miss are the many Golden Books we had and record albums...like Bozo and does anyone remember Gossamer Wump who was a triangle player narrated by Frank Morgan?  Man, I just pulled that out of the dark recesses of my memory just now.

As for new TV shows, I have found I just cannot invest any time in being a regular, committed viewer to anything anymore.  Other than SNL, I watch literally NO network TV.  I have never seen an episode of Sopranos, Sex and the City, and ,other than American Idol, I resolutely refuse to watch any reality shows.  Those take the food out of the mouths of fiction writers like myself...and I find their premises usually appeal to the lowest common denominator...really, shit like Temptation Island, promoting cheating on your other half.  What a sleazy, scummy  idea.

We just got  HG/TV added to our  cable system and I'm enjoying it a lot.  Very calming. More like PBS This Old House...without all the freneticness of Page Davis and the trumped-up, but non-existenct conflict they try to create.  And they usually offer real, permanent fixes to house problems...not quick-fix MDF shit thrown up or tacking crappy, dust-catching fabric everywhere.

I like what I've seen of Brit comedy,THE OFFICE; I enjoy Colin Quinn's new show on the Comedy Network where he and comics pseudo-discuss current events (It's Bill Maher played strictly for laughs); I like Bill Maher's new show on HBO, but it seems to come and go awfully quickly;  I like DEAD RINGERS, an impersonation show on BBCAmerica...but if one is not up on the British political scene or their TV personalities, it can be a bit vague.

The only two shows...which are hardly new...that I consistently watch are  SOUTH PARK, still the most savagely incisive satire on TV and terribly, terribly funny, and THE McGAUGHLIN REPORT.

My stations are pretty much TCM, Fox Movie Channel, BBCAmerica, HG/TV and The Comedy Network.

Oh, forgot to comment on new shows.  I don't have a lot of time for TV, and since I am sadly without any kind of cable, I'm limited to network.  Most of my TV veiwing consists of DVD's and movies.  That being said, I have caught a few episodes of Tru Calling, and I find it watchable.  I faithfully watch CSI (not really a new show) and Without A Trace, both of which I really enjoy

Enjoyed everyone's Barbie stories!  Hmmm...you girls were more creative children than I was...I just had them act out conventional soap opera story lines and go on dates with Ken.  I don't really think that playing with Barbies scarred me or anything, and I have a pretty decent level of self esteem...I just kind of more object to them now on principle.

SWW--I've always thought that the sight of snow on a beach must be one of the most beautiful visions ever.  Intermingled sand and snow....sooo pretty and pristine.

Emily--I hope you're not getting sick!  Drink lots of fluids, yada yada...you know the drill!

Well, I've done one application...one more to go.  Then I may be off to see a movie and do a sleepover with my best friend.

Congratulations Jed on the show and the new status.

Great news Jane. Despite the setting of Perth (I am from the other side of the country), the time frame is very much my childhood. I do hope you enjoy the book.
Toys: Toys R Not US. (or were not us). All I ever wanted at Birthday and Christmas were books. I did have a clockwork boat that I would play with on our backyard fish pond. I do remember falling into the pond quite often when the boat stalled in the centre and I was trying to reach it. I think my dad was more concerned about me damaging his waterlily plants than about me or the boat or the goldfish.

Yes, DR Jane, the murder I mentioned in my original post was the murder that was being investigated within the firm because someone in the firm did it. Each week, there was A LITTLE BIT of that investigation along with senior members of the firm tryhing to find dirt on Rob Lowe's character to bring him down. Added to THAT was a case that was being handled by Lowe that week AND a case that was being handled by his old legal aid society now being run by his best friend. So, the show was a jumble of plotlines both open ended and not.

I hate to be the breaker of bad news but I understand PEACEMAKER was canceled and will not be returning.

I think the only newer show I watch is MOST EXTREME ELIMINATION CHALLENGE which shows on Spike TV. It is a Japanese reality show (which has been discussed here previously) which has been redubbed and is just hilarious! When I was on my trip to Los Angeles, while staying at our hotel in Anaheim, my buddy Ron and I watched THE MULLETS and LAS VEGAS. LAS VEGAS wasn't bad, but the MULLETS...oh, my golly what were they thinking! Poor Loni Anderson!

I have a few of the toys from my childhood...my collection of Freakies figures from Freakies breakfast cereal (does anyone remember that?) which was originally out in the early 70s.

I have the a stuffed bunny rabbit from my first Easter (circa 1964) and a large stuffed clown doll that my grandmother had that I loved as a kid (I think it is from about 1949 and all the grandchildren played with it at one time or another...Grandma gave it to me before she passed away). The toys I wish I still had were my sisters Barbies from the early 60s and my Rice Krispy character hand puppets. I loved hand puppets and still find them fascinating. I also love the vintage Barbies and do have some, just not the ones that belonged to my sister.

Mr. Tony Dale posts by Proxy

Called me to day to tell me that he thinks he may have walking (as opposed to standing, lying or running) pneuomia.

He will get his computer back either Tuesday or Wednesday (hopefully)

He started to shovel the driveways to his home and after shoveling the upper part of one of them he took a rest in his car and thats when the guy with the plow on the fron of his truck arrived. His parents did not tell him they hired a guy.

His favorite toys were Lincoln Logs and a Blackboard. He liked to especially to build his Lincoln Logs and "free" the blackboard at the same time. But his favorite toy was a pair of scissors.

In his DVD player was X Men 2: United. The VCR has a copy of Cat Ballou which will also have a  blank tape to copy the show Trading Spaces. (Its the feather episode)

In his CD player is Clay Aikens solo cd that is overproduced and over everything. He hates it

Favorite Ice Cream:  Pistacho

Favorite New Shows: What Not to Wear (TLC) and Queer Eye For the Straight Guy (Bravo/NBC)

Mr. Tony would also like to ask: "Does anyone remember the  boy band  2gether?" He saw toy figurines (dolls) in the store and never heard of this group. Who are they to warrent dolls?

I'd like to make a personal plea to all DR's regarding the ads. That request is that we not talk about the ads. Seriously.

All I will say now is that they are supposed to, most of the time, be geared towards what is being discussed automatically and they often are.

If you have questions about the ads please send those privately out of the public view of the community forums. Thanks!

It ran for 16 episodes on the 10 Network in 1980-81 during a break in the British run.

It was called Bone Brother Department. Mr. Bone was a cousin of Mr. Grace and he lends "Mr. Humpries to him. At the store there are Australian counterparts to his Brot co-workers. Captain Peacokc becomes Captain Wagstaff, Mrs. Slocombe become Mrs. Crawford, Mr. Goldberg is Mr. Mankowitz and Mr. Rumbold became Mr. Dunkling in the first season and and Mr. Fenwick in the second.

Cast included June Bronhill. Shane Bourne, Judith Woodriffe, Anothy Bazell, Peter Collingwood, basil Clarke, Ken Fraser and Christine Amor along with John Inman.

There were 15 episodes in all and the reason why the Australian counterparts and situations seemed so familar they were rewritten episodes from the British series with the exception of one in the second season where Mr. Humphries visa is declared void and he considers marrying so he can stay in Australia.

BUT IF THAT WASN"T ENOUGH

There was an attempt at an American version. Only the pilot was made. It was called The Beanes of Boston  In the pilot John Hillerman played Mr. Peacock, Charlotte Rae played Mrs. Slocombe, Lorna Patterson was Miss Brahms and Alan Suess was Mr. Humphries. Garry Marshall was the executive producer.  According to creator and writer Jeremy Lloyd he had this to say about his Laugh-in co-star Alan Suess "He played him (Mr. Humphries) like Paul Lynde. Bewitched's Uncle Arthur. I'd forgtton quite what Suess was like and that he proved to be miscast. It aired May 5, 1979

Robin Williams auditioned fora role and was rejected "but couldn't think what to do with him"

There was also a spin off play and movie. The play had a similar plot as the movie.

Btw, I've also been watching the new show, Tru Calling. It is very unusual. But I am liking it.  This girl Tru, works at a morgue (she is waiting to apply to med school).  She lives a day, then when she goes to work at night, sometimes a victim will be brought in.  And they look up and say "help me". Then Tru in a series of flashbacks, goes back (we see everything that happened that day flash before us).  She gets to relive the day and try to save the person.

It's quite interesting. And there are certain things that she might forget the first time around, that she can change. Although it's on Thursday's on Fox opposite Survivor and Friends. Not a good time slot :)

I just got back from wrapping gifts for donations at the local Barnes & Noble for the Relay For Life team that I'm on.  The idea is that fund-raising-organizations can come to B&N and wrap gifts for shoppers (at B&N) for donations.  B&N supplies the wrapping paper, tape and scissors.  Most people gave anywhere from $1 to $5 per wrap and even a couple of people just gave money without having anything wrapped.  That was pretty nice.

Oh my favorite toys.  DRCharlesPogue had all the toys I wanted.  My favorite was a toy typewriter I got at age 6 - but I don't want it back....too hard to use.  If I could have one back, it would be my white building blocks, plastic, I had two sets so I could build HUGE houses....even two story ones.  My sister and I cut out furniture from the Spiegel catalog to put inside, and spent a lot of time looking through the windows with a flashlight!  ::)

New tv shows.....like MBARNUM...I think MOST EXTREME ELIMINATION CHALLENGE on the Spike network is very funny - the English voice overs ala "What's Up, Tiger Lily?" make me laugh out loud.  RENO 911! on the Comedy Channel is also funny.

Just watched PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN on DVD! What a fun movie....very exciting....a bit too long....Johnny Depp rocks! ;D

Was it DR TOMFROMOZ who mentioned THE PURPLE MASK yesterday?  It starred Tony Curtis and Angela Lansbury of course, but featured Miss Allison Hayes who almost went to the guillotine near the end of the film!  Sorry if MATTH talked about it.....too lazy to go back to check.  :P

DRMG and KERRY, glad you liked Queen for a Day!  And I hope you like the others on the tape as well....and TEDDY BEAR without the entire swimming pool sequence.   ???

Home from work.  Tired, but happy that tomorrow will be almost all mine.  Now, let's get some postin' goin' on, shall we?  I'm not doing anything but staying home, buying something sweet to eat for dessert, and watching a DVD or two.

There is a party goin' on in my nabe - no place to park on the street anywhere - and yet, I have not been invited to said party.  Well, it ain't a partay if I'm not there.

I may have to send Bear to meet your dogs, GEORDIEMC.  Seven years old and he still squats like a girl sometimes.  I'd like to see the snow for myself.  Just once.  Not for long.  15 minutes tops and I think I'd be set for life, snow wise.  I don't do cold.

I can see Bruce singing this while looking out the window.

I see flags, I hear bells,
There's a parade in town.
I see crowds, I hear yells,
There's a parade in town!
I hear drums in the air,
I see clowns in the square,
I see marchers marching,
Tossing hats at the sky.
Did you hear? Did you see?
Is a parade in town?
Well, they're out of step, the flutes are squeaky,
The banners are frayed.
Any parade in town without me
Must be a second-class parade!
So!... Ha!...

I see flags, I hear bells,
There's a parade in town.
I see crowds, I hear yells,
There's a parade in town!
I hear drums in the air,
I see clowns in the square,
I see marchers marching,
Tossing hats at the sky.
Did you hear? Did you see?
Was a parade in town?
Were there drums without me?
Was a parade in town?
'Cause I'm dressed at last,
at my best, and my banners are high.
Tell me, while I was getting ready,
Did a parade go by?

No, I didn't talk about THE PURPLE MASK. I've never even seen it!

I was VERY impressed with the remastering job done on CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG. Beautiful picture and nice revamped sound for a 1968 movie. I got so nostalgic for 1968 musicals that I put in OLIVER as soon as CHITTY finished.

JOAN OF ARCADIA is doing just fine, so no worries there. She'll no doubt be back for a second season. And MONK is priceless; no worries there either.

DR JRand, I believe I read some time ago that the Todd-AO version of AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS is gone, lost to the ravages of poor storage and neglect and that the full screen version is all that's left. Sad, I know, but I'm almost positive that's what I read.

Ironic that the widescreen process that bears the name of its financier Mike Todd is no longer a part of the movie that won him an Oscar.   :(

I like "Forbidden Planet," and am looking forward to the big remastered re-release.  Although I admire most everything about it, I think it really could have used a conventional orchestral score.  The "electronic tonalities" by the Barrons really grate on my nerves, and make it hard to be emotionally involved in the story.  --Not that that's necessarily a bad thing.  It probably IS intentional.  But it keeps it a "like," not "love," movie for me.

Not counting the silents and the early talkies, I can only think of one other major movie that has no score (either orchestral underscoring or song-score), Hitchcock's "The Birds."  Am I forgetting some others?

I have long wanted to have a copy of the soundtrack of "Mr Quilp" which I know was not released officially. I thought the film was indeed much better than its reputation would have it. It may have been retitled for USA release: "The Old Curiosity Shop". I saw the film in London around Christmas 1975.

I saw Quilp at a special sneak preview at what is now Bookstar here in Studio City.  I would say seventy percent of the audience walked out after fifteen minutes.  I can't remember how long I lasted.  I knew about the unreleased LP, and I finally found a copy in the late seventies.  I never taped it, and it's long since gone, just like most of the Hainsies/Kimlets tonight.

I am here! I know it's late and I completely missed that actual DAY, but I am here!

I woke up at 12:15 today. My audition for the cabaret show was at 1. So I RUN out of my room to tell my mom to get ready to drive me (I knew she'd be awake), and my little sister informs me that she's out getting her nails done, then eating lunch with my dad.

So I panic.

I finally get a hold of her at 12:45, she speeds home, picks me up, and we drive all the way to the audition location, making it there only 15 minutes late. I run in, and the lady at the desk gives me my forms, glares at me, and tells me to "get in there, they already STARTED."

There were 4 other people auditioning today (there were auditions last night too, I'm sure with a better turnout), all over age 30. I hastily filled out my paperwork and gave it to the directors, apologizing repeatedly, while they glared at me. Now, I understand that they might be a tiny bit irked at my being late, but with snow conditions and the weird timing, they couldn't expect EVERYONE to be on time. I was weirded out by their stares, and quickly went back to my seat.

The others began to sing/read their dialouge. They were good, not GREAT, and finished very quickly. I walked up, introduced myself, and stated the song I would be singing. I was calm, cool, and collected as the pianist spoke with me, and felt good about what was coming. But the SECOND the music started, I started shaking. I wasn't even NERVOUS! It was like a reflex or something! Because of how strange it was, and how worried I became about what was occuring, I don't think I sang as well as I could have. I finished the song fine, and waited for the next direction. The director looks at me, and, very condecendingly, says "Do you even know how to READ music?"

Ahem. I have played the piano for 9 years. I have sung for 9 years. I do know how to read, and I know for a fact that I didn't mess anything up in the song besides a possible VOICE problem, not a written problem.

The rest of the audition was the same. I *nailed* the dialogue, and the woman kind of rolled her eyes and nodded. During a small section of the dance sequence, I asked where our hands should be. She looked at me and said 'Well, if you would just WAIT a minute, I'll TELL you, OK?" But when an adult asked the SAME question, she said 'Oh, what a good question! Let me show you!"

This is a serious case of agism going on here. I left that building SO upset, because I KNOW I was better than the people in there! I hate it when people treat teenagers differently because were stereotypically selfish and moody and rude. I am not a rude kid, I went in there just as prepared and apolegetic as I could be, and didn't do a single thing out of line. But because of her attitude, I probably won't get it. I'm not even sure I WANT it now, because of the way I was treated. I don't want to have to deal with that woman if I make it. ERG.

But other than that my day was fine. I worked, it was easy, bleh bleh bleh. I didn't get on sooner because my internet was down.

Toys: I was a VERY non-girly little kid, because I had an older brother. I was always with him, and my little sisters were always together. I had a LOT of G.I.Joes, Ninja Turtles, and battle tank-things. This probably explains why I'm so girly now. I'm not sure what I really miss, I always liked my E Z Bake oven. I would cook in that thing ALL DAY LONG if my mom would let me.

I never watch TV outside of The Real World, and that doesn't strike me as your kind of show, BK. :)

Two good shows today.  And a good Thai dinner between shows.  And a good, quick visit to Trader Joe's between shows too.  Can that store carry any more delectable, delicious goodies?  Chocolates, chocolate covered nuts, chocolate chip cookies, 10 pound chocolate bars, chocolate covered espresso beans, chocolate covered orange peel, chocolate truffle (do you sense a theme here?)...  And I even picked up a mini, live Christmas tree - perfect for the desk in my room!  And it was only $2.99!  *I stocked up on the Ginger Altoids - boy, do I LOVE these, and they're a "seasonal item" now, so I got them while they had them, and picked up a cheap chardonnay (mainly for the lable since it had a piano keyboard on it), and a container of the chocolate covered espresso beans (the four flavor assortment) for our dance captain - it was a two show day!

*Unfortunately, the Thai dinner kind of backed up on the conductor a few minutes into the show.  Well, actually, I think the extra Thai bird chiles he put on his chicken curry finally kicked in.  He was getting a little warm, and asked me if I was feeling all right.  -I just had Pad Thai tonight - it had been a while.  Let's just say we had a very compressed version of the intro to the "Camelot" reprise.  Not really noticable, but we all went, "hhmmm.." - Ah, and Arsenio Hall reference.  -Or C&C Music Factory if you prefer.

But we were all better by intermission.  *I was kind of goofy during the first act.. all those samples at Trader Joe's... Come on, I HAD to try each of the flavors of the chocolate covered espresso beans - milk, dark, white and latte.   ;D  I was having a sort of spitball fight with the percussionist.

So, tomorrow, tomorrow.. Ah, an Annie reference...  What to do tomorrow?  I only have a 6:00 show - no matinee.  I guess I could hit the malls, but I'm basically done with my Christmas shopping already, so...  I could see a movie, but since I'm going to be spending three hours in a dark theatre later in the day, so...  I could do laundry, but... ;)  We'll see where the day takes me.  If anything, I may just go out and get a copy of the NYTimes, and read it leisurely.  And even attempt the crossword puzzle (ah, a Starting Here, Starting Now reference).

Oh, DR Sarah - Sorry about your audition experience.  I ALWAYS try to be kind to everyone at auditions - well, it's in my nature to be kind, I have to try to be mean and uncooperative.  And I know you mentioned before that it was for a cabaret performance opportunity... But is it associated with a local theatre company, or with the club/venue where it will be performed?  *I'm mainly asking since I usually keep up with the audition notices around DC, so... Just curious.   In any case, ageism does exist, unfortunately... and to sort of play devil's advocate... If the audition notice said be there at 1:00...  I'm just amazed you were able to sing that soon after getting up!  *However, I remember having 9:00AM voice lessons in college - and there were days when I would get up at 8:40-45 and RUN to the studio.. and have a real good lesson - ?!?!?!  I guess the rush of adrenaline got me all warmed up.

Well, I'm getting into babbling mode...

Ciao for niao...

DR SWW - Monday will be a big baking day for me - It has to be since I haven't baked the past two Mondays, even though I made trips to the grocery store each of those Mondays for chocolate chips, toffe chips, bits 'o brickle(!), peanut butter, ginger, etc...  Any favorite recipes from your recent forays?  Oh, and since I've never been to Rehoboth, can I come and cook in your kitchen? ;)

At last the board is looking normal!!!??? for this time of the night.  Why I wonder do Washingtonians keep later hours than the citizens of Oregon?

DR TomFromOz:  It rains in those two states more than it does in any other.

What else have they got to do?

:)

Which still does not answer my question. And of course it does "beg" the question "why you Ron?"

So, DR Tom, thanks for pointing out to me that DR François is no longer a registered user.

I hope he didn't get in trouble or anything for posting here.

"Strictly Ballroom" -- a movie everyone should see!

I tried my almighty best this afternoon to convince DR MattH to put on some street clothes and get his butt cheeks over to his favorite video store to rent this wonderful Aussie film.

Instead, he watched "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" and "Oliver!" and that's just fine.

But I think -- yes I do! -- that one he actually watches "Strictly Ballroom," he will kick himself for not having seen it before.

In case it has passed any of you buy, THIS IS A GREAT MOVIE ENTERTAINMENT and it will tickle you and warm you and leave you feeling breathless and alive and happy!

It's one of my favorite pick-me-ups!

DR Tom From Oz:  Why ME Ron what?

Why so cryptic?  What's your question?

Why do Washingtonians stay up later than Oregonians?

Maybe it rains MORE in Washington than it does in Oregon!!!

And I get to spend New Year's Eve with Paul Mecurio. I suspect I have mentioned that before and will again.  I will attempt to find out if it is indeed strictly ballroom as he does the full monty! Is this an adult site?

Sure, I'll do a monologue.  Here's one of my eBay Kimmel prizes - a model kit.

Wow, BK, a photo of a foot long Kimmel!

I LOVE Strictly Ballroom!!  One of my childhood favorites.  And Paul was just so sexy when he danced...how could you not love him.  I've also always had a weakness for cute accents...

I trust you'll go back stage, or at least stand outside the stage door and get an autograph?

You should try to get one of his leather codpiece photos from "Exit To Eden" and ask him to autograph that!!!

The rain may be the reason for the posts from Washington late at night but that is surely not the case for a Californian resident. The question was comparing the posting habits from the people of the two NW states.

M. Monferran will not be back in Paris until Thursday so I don't think he will feel the wrath of anyone or even the breeze of a bitch slap.

Well, after working in concessions for a choir concert tonight (actually, I left right after intermission...they were good, but I just wasn't in the mood), I went to a local video/DVD rental place and rented two fairly new DVDs that have Bernadette Peters.  I'm not holding out hope that either are incredibly fabulous, but I don't care.  I want to see Bernadette Peters in a movie...and I got two:

One of them is the Douglas clan flick called "It Runs In the Family."  Kirk, Michael and Cameron Douglas play father, son and grandson and Bernadette plays Michael's wife.  FINALLY A MOVIE WHERE HE'S MARRIED TO A WOMAN HIS OWN AGE!!!  I'm just so tired of those older man VERY much younger woman relationship movies.  Anyway, I don't know anything about the story.

The other is a made-for-TV movie called "Prince Charming."  I don't ever remember hearing about this.  This is the synopsis on imdb.com:

A prince gets turned into a frog and can only be changed back to a prince if he can get a fair maiden to kiss him and marry him. In this version, his sidekick, played by Martin Short, also becomes a frog...<SNIP>  As frogs, and 500 years after the spell, they get onto a plane in England and accidently get deposited into present-day NYC. Barely dodging traffic, they end up in central park where they meet an actress (Bernadette Peters) who they think will be the one. On a lark, the prince frog gets kissed, and tossed into the lake, where he changes, his assistant too, back into people. But the actress is gone. They meet and hire a horse carriage tour driver (Christina Applegate) to find her, but not everything works out the way it should. There is some issue about the gold coin he gives her (is it real? Yes, worth $6000!), whether his story is real (yes, it is!). And, as we probably all expected, the prince and the carriage driver get together in the end.

It sounds cute...and I want to see Bernadette Peters in a movie, even if it is made-for-TV.

I have this movie on laserdisc (pausing on a laserdisc is so much clearer than on video :o )!  Do you think he would sign that or would he run screaming into the night trying to get away from it?

Hello late night crowd!  Yes, today was a double, and all went pretty well.  Matinee was what I would call a decent show... nothing better than usual, but no worse either.  A bunch of us then had a potluck dinner to fill the late afternoon/early evening between shows.  Mmm-mmm, them were some yummy chicken enchiladas!  The night show was quite good.  Without doubt, the best so far (of only 3, of course, but all scenes seemed to be their best yet).

Matinee tomorrow, followed by photo call, but I do believe I should be able to make it to chat!

I always thought Bookstar used to be a movie theater. It just looked like one
