Title: THE DAY OF THE SOUND MIX

Well, you've read the notes, the sound mix of the notes was excellent, and now it is time for you to post until the mixed up cows come home.

The films scores that come to mind are from adapted Classical music.
2001 - A Space Odyssey
Elvira Madigan
Death In Venice

It's not just the scores, but the scene and score together to form perfection.  Here are some of my faves, as examples:

Finding Boo from To Kill A Mockingbird - wherein Scout discovers Boo Radley hiding behind the door of Jem's room.  One of the most beautiful moments in all of film thanks to the combo platter of Robert Mulligan, Harper Lee, Horton Foote, Robert Duvall, and most especially Elmer Bernstein.

She Knows, She Knows from The Miracle Worker - wherein Helen Keller finally understands.  Arthur Penn's direction, Patty Duke and Anne Bancroft's performances, and the brilliant underscore of Laurence Rosenthal - unforgettable, and never fails to bring tears to my eyes.

The Murder from Psycho - talk about music informing a visual sequence.

The Book People from Fahrenheit 451 - Mr. Herrmann's final cue turns a beautifully shot sequence into high art and poetry.

TOTD:

One scene that comes to mind is towards the end of the movie, Secret of Roan Inish, and the little girl sees a little boy in a curragh coming towards the beach and she rushes out to meet him. The music is sweet and haunting and fits the scene beautifully.

The knife and exaggerated music in the shower scene in Psycho

This scene is actually a montage of Micheal Collins being killed at Beal naBlath, and Julia Roberts character, Kitty, is being fitted in a wedding dress. It is one of few times I have actually liked Sinead O'Connor but her rendition of He moved through the fair was eerily haunting...

Good morning, all!  Another day in with a few more edits.   I have to rush back home since I have a guest this afternoon who wants to be an orchestrator, and he's asked to look at some scores.  After that, perhaps a DVD.

DRCillaliz, I'm ambivalent about watching FLIGHT 93.  I'm curious, but I still cry when I walk by a firehouse and see the memorials.  Last night, on the news, they interviewed people about the film, and as soon as a few clips were shown, I got all teary.  I think I do better reading about 9/11.

Congratulations on finishing the play and looking forward to hearing how the read-thru goes.

As for Soaps:

I am a YOUNG & RESTLESS man myself, having watched from the FIRST day it was broadcast when a mysterious stranger came into town and began to disrupt the Foster and Brooks families, although I am NOT a regular viewer.

My other favorites no longer run regularly:  DARK SHADOWS, THE EDGE OF NIGHT, and LOVE IS A MANY SPLENDORED THING.  Oh well.

TOD:

Psycho - the murder scene, already mentioned, Herrmann
Mockingbird - the walk through the woods, Bernstein

Walk on the Wild Side - title sequence, Bernstein

Ice Castles - Lexie's final skate, Through the Eyes of Love, Hamlisch

Harlow - the confession scene, Riddle

Pillow Talk - the confrontation scene, title sequence, DeVol

But the BEST ever music to set something up and to stick in the mind are two TV themes:

GREEN ACRES and THE ADDAMS FAMILY (snap, snap)

JRand - I'd go with the confrontation scene from PILLOW TALK as a fave as well, beautifully set up throughout the movie and then wonderfully executed

The bicycle triumph in BREAKING AWAY is also a great memory

From TV credits, the ending of the opening credits for PHYLLIS remains my all-time favorite fusing of music and visual, because even though it's a little mean-spirited, it so effectively lampoons the big-lady Broadway songs of the era that just preceded it.  And to really subject myself to ridicule, I loved the way Laverne and Shirley's title credits were timed to the music, one of the few shows where I would watch the credits week after week.

Saturday morning greetings!  Today is my day to drive home to Middletown and it's bright and sunny - maybe I'll open the sunroof on my car.

Last night, I went shopping at Barnes & Noble - bought Alison Weir's bio of Elizabeth I, my May and August book group books (The Jane Austen Book Club and Bee Season), a couple of tea shop mysteries by Laura Childs to bring my series up to date, and a Liz Callaway CD produced by our very own BK with orchestrations by our very own DR Elmore.

Picked up dinner at Bravo Italian Cucina and came back to my hotel to watch Meet the Fockers on HBO - what a silly movie with hammy turns by the 2 sets of parents.  This morning I woke up without an alarm clock (a rare treat) and am about to start my journey home.

Bye for now

My favorite music/scene in the movies (apart from many of the ones already mentioned) is the waltz scene from MADAME BOVARY. It's not a great movie, but it sure is a great sequence, and that Miklos Rozsa score is one of the best ever written.

A beautiful day here in Rehoboth Beach.  The DogWalk on the Boardwalk should be great!

We'll be taking Bonnie, Buster, and Angie.  A friend/relative of ours, Kevin (a cousin of der Brucer's son-in-law) - who works with the Delaware Humane Society - swears that we should be able to find Angie a good home today.  I think that's overly optimistic - we'll need to have a home check done - but the fingers are crossed.

Going to get to TILL THE CLOUDS ROLL BY today. After years of seeing those drab public domain copies of this film on TV and on videotape, I remember how astonished I was to see the officially sanctioned MGM laserdisc that contained Technicolor that just blew me away. I'm expecting the DVD to supersede that presentation and can't wait to see it this afternoon.

HAPPY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO OUR VIXTER!!!

TOD- I just love the opening to RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK - virtually no dialogue, the actors, the jungle, the director and THE MUSIC!! by John Williams... and finally, their plane takes off!! BIG THEME!!! Oh, boy!

The boys, on their bikes, are trying to get ET home... they are being chased by the Feds... can they get away? Oh, no, they can't! Suddenly, the bikes soar off into the air, the music soars, my heart leaps out of my chest, it's so beautiful.

Bill Conti's AN UNMARRIED WOMAN theme as it's played along with Jill Clayburgh's carting the huge painting through the streets of NY.

The "Die Walkure" sequence in APOCALYPSE NOW

John Williams' JAWS theme during the initial attack.

Max Stiner's NOW, VOYAGER theme during the final moments of the film.

All of the uses of Gershwin in MANHATTAN, particularly the opening montage with "Rhapsody in Blue".

Today is the second - and, thankfully FINAL - bridal shower for my nephew's fiancee. Now, don't get me wrong - I really like this girl, and I'm so grateful for her presence in the family. I'm not very good at "luncheons" and I'm worse at small talk, socializing, girl-stuff, long afternoons trapped in the din of thirty or forty sopranos shrieking away. Last week's party was very stressful for me.

So today, my gift to the bride is a Cal King set of 600 thread count, cream colored sheets. Got 'em at Nordstrom Rack, while I was looking for a dress to wear to the wedding. Got a DEAL!! (PS- still haven't found a dress... I may wear the one I wore to my brother's wedding, 20 years ago...)

E&T yesterday with final rehearsal for the wee play I'm directing. Today it opens. I've done all I can do. And I think it has really come together and should be a cute piece. One of the actresses is making her return to the stage after some time away, so I worry a little about her nerves.

The other thing is we only got to rehearse in the actual space one time, so I hope they don't get thrown in the somewhat unfamiliar surroundings.

Finally listening to some LPs I got this week that I haven't had time to enjoy.

Rupert Homes PARTNERS IN CRIME in its vinyl glory.

Earlier:
Frances Faye's FRENZY
GEORGE JONES/GENE PITNEY/MELBA MOORE duets LP
The second Brooklyn Bridge LP
MOTT and BRAIN CAPERS by Mott the Hoople
Esther Phillips FROM A WHISPER TO A SCREAM
MICKEY KATZ AND HIS ORCHESTRA

Mickey Katz is fun yiddish versions of pop hits: "Herring Boats" instead of "Shrimp Boats," "Duvid Crockett," "Bagle Call Rag," "Borscht Riders in the Sky," "Kiss of Meyer" instead of "Kiss of Fire," "She'll Be Coming 'Round the Katzkills," etc.

I seem to remember reading that Mickey Katz is someone famous's dad. Gotta reserach that.

I like the lengthy instrumental bit of the "Bye Bye Life" number in ALL THAT JAZZ when Roy Scheider is up in the audience and he hugs is daughter goodbye, etc.

The tail end of the movie FEARLESS starring Jeff Bridges. Maurice Jarre created this barely noticeable drone that builds from the big flashback right to the closing credits and it just wiped me out.

Rodzinski - I wonder if TPunks' friend was working for Joel Grey in 1993, when Mr. Grey was starring in one of Skip's show, HERRINGBONE (Skip was going by his full name, Walter Edgar Kennon, in those days), at Hartford Stage.  Mr. Grey was as far as I could tell a great artist, and gave a phenomenal performance.   This is an excerpt form the NY Times review back then:

June 6, 1993, Sunday

SUNDAY VIEW; In a One-Man Show, Joel Grey Is a Crowd
By DAVID RICHARDS

If Joel Grey rolls up his pants to the knees, opens his baby blues to their full circumference and puts a little red-and-white schoolboy's cap on his head, he can, at the age of 61, pass for 8. By puffing up his cheeks, extending his arms out from his sides and lowering his body to a seated position -- although there is no chair nearby for him to sit on -- he is able to transform himself rather convincingly into a frog. And when he lets his wrists melt, allows his hips to expand in a circular swivel and draws his mouth into the shape of a rosebud, he could be any floozy in the lobby of a third-rate hotel looking for a good time.

Mr. Grey can also sing and dance, by the way.

All of this makes him the right person to take on "Herringbone," a bizarre one-man musical in which the man in question, a bowler-hatted, cane-twirling entertainer named Herringbone, plays 10 different characters -- among them, an 8-year-old boy, a floozy and a frog, or at least a crazed vaudevillian who was once part of a team called "The Chicken and the Frog." Written by Tom Cone, with sprightly music by Walter Edgar Kennon and singular lyrics by Ellen Fitzhugh, "Herringbone" attracted attention at Playwrights Horizons in 1982 when the late David Rounds was doing all the transformations and having to change sex, voice and personality every other line or so.

One of my favorite bit of "borrowing" stories is when a columnist for a theater website had the chutzpah to use "dear readers" - it was so  blatantly obvious where he'd cadged it from and I wrote him and told him he looked like an idiot for doing it.  He never did it again.

And how about VERTIGO? Herrmann's music as Jimmy Stewart follows Kim Novak in his car (or, really, any scene in that film).
Morricone, THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY - the final scenes.

Enough - I have things to do. just wanted to prevent projectile vomiting.

Has anybody mentioned JAWS? The shark attacks would IMHO be pretty lame without Williams' music. In fact, it's so powerful that once it's established you don't even need to see the shark - just hear the ominous theme -  to be petrified.

Yes! Hitchcock knew all about that; it's what one does not see that's scary... plus the music! Plus our own weird minds....

Movie music:

the three that come to mind immediately are:

Kim Novak and William Holden starting to dance to "Moonglow" when the "Picnic" theme sneaks in and solidifies the whole thing.  Sheer perfection.

The next two would be Bernard Herrman's scores for "Vertigo" and "Obsession"  (particularly the palces where Jimmy Stewart and Cliff Roberstson, respectively, are kissing Kim Novak and Genvieve Bujold- repsectively) with the camera encirlcling them and the music giving you a great sense of climax and foreboding.

Another is John Willimas' flying theme from "E.T."

Well...the scene where Sally (played by June Kenney) discovers for the first time that her hunch is right and yes, her fiance Bob (played by John Agar) has indeed been turned shrunken into a Barbie sized doll by her boss Mr. Franz (played by John Hoyt) in this very tense scene from ATTACK OF THE PUPPET PEOPLE.

The music is quite dramatic.

Bosco had his first bath today...he wasn't to pleased with it, but went along with the process.

Then we went for a walk and he is now collapsed on the floor taking a nap...and snoring.

In a few hours we will hie ourselves up to Mark and James so that he can play with the newly neutered cousin Digger while we adults have a barbecue.

PENNY!! thanks I could not remember that oen for some odd reason..

Many of John Wiliams scores are amazing.. Even though the movie was not one of Ron Howards better ones, I thought the score Far and Away was great. I also liked how they incorported the Irish music in the scene i call "fighting for dough".

Another good one Maria... I am not a big fan of the movie but the score is brilliant and notes still ring through my head for various things... da duh da duh..

I have always liked John Williams as a contemporary film composer.

I'm home, I'm home!  It was a smooth drive until five lanes of the by-pass around Columbus had to leave the freeway due to (I found out later) an accident.  The traffic jam and my alternate route added about an hour to my  trip.

TOD - The opening sequence of The Big Chill, in which we meet all the characters with "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" playing in the background.  And the conclusion of An Officer and a Gentleman, when Richard Gere carries Deborah Winger out of the factory.

The Murder from Psycho - talk about music informing a visual sequence.
I totally agree.

The docking of the space ship with the space station in 2001  is perfection!
Absolutely.

It's just a perfect blending of music and scene.

Also, in what is now the first "Pirates of the Carribbean" movie, Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom have a sword fight and the music is perfectly timed with their sword clashes.

Many vibes and broken legs to DR Rodzinski!!!!

Congrats to DR TPunk!!!!

Today was a bitter sweet day for me.  Bear continues to act funny, won't eat, crys. etc. etc since the death of Brandi.  I took him up to vet again to make sure there is nothing physical wrong with him.  The thing in his eye seems to be shrinking on it's own so the doctor doesn't think he will need surgery after all. Everything else is grief over the loss of Brandi.

I was told I should really consider getting another dog.  With my current situation, I don't think that would be such a good idea but I did go to pound and the local shelter to look at the dogs there.

Lord, so many sad eyes.  I wanted to take them all home with me.  I can't rush into this so I had to walk away from all of them with a very heavy heart.

I want what is right.  For me.  For Bear.  For Mom.  For whatever dog I would get or not get.  I have the dog houses, the fenced yard, the food etc. and I would love another dog  but........

Sigh.  I don't know what to do.

She didn't start working for him until 99 I think when he was starring in Give Me Your Answer, Do at the Roundabout- we both worked there at the time.

The Delaware Humane Association held its annual Walk for Animals along the Boardwalk at Rehoboth Beach today

We decided to take Angie, in hopes we could show her off and find her a home, and Bonnie and Buster, because they always seem to get left out.

From the moment we got there, Angie switched to her "ON STAGE - LIVE" mode. There was not a warm blooded object that she didn't prance up to and make friends with.

She met up with a toddler sitting in a stroller by her parents on a bench. The toddler was holding a small square pretzel treat in her hand. Angie pranced up, inspected the situation, and very carefully grabbed the exposed part of the pretzel. We now have a toddler-puppy face down! (Normally, Angie would have snatched the goody and ran.) "Dear", said the Mother, "give the nice puppy your pretzel." The tot let go, and Angie happily crunched away. Mom pulled out another pretzel from a baggie and handed to the tot - and the game was on! The tot held out the pretzel, Angie gently took it and the tot gave a great big smile! Now, Angie had learned an important lesson on which she could act: strollers hold tiny children - tiny children offer treats.

On the way back up the boardwalk we came upon a couple holding a 16 month old in their lap. The child had a cookie in one hand and a piece of muffin in the other. Angie pranced right up and gratefully received the proffered cookie. She showed her appreciation for the then proffered muffin piece by carefully licking the youngsters fingers clean!

After the Boardwalk stroll, we went to a reception held in a courtyard in town. Here Angie made all sorts of new friends - and also enjoyed sharing bits of granny smith apple from my lunch (A wonderful sandwich of toasted French bun with Brie, Apple, and Almonds). (Woody had a Turkey club on wheatberry bread and did not share!)

The organizers had a chap dressed up as Clifford the Big Red Dog.  When Clifford arrived, half the dogs started barking like mad. When things had settled down, Angie pranced up the Clifford and firmly grabbed two fingers of his red plush glove and proceeded to tug away!

The host had shown up with a big Mobile Van loaded with animals for adoption. Meanwhile, a nice lady from up-state New York had taken a fancy to Angie. She filled out the application and called her fiancé to see if she could bring the puppy home on Sunday. Her sister was with her and showed us camera-pix of the lady's 4 acre house, with fenced yard (and adjacent pond) populated by a 3.5 year old Pomeranian and a 4 year old Golden Retriever who needs a bigger dog with which to play. The lady volunteers at her local SPCA and new her Vets number by heart. Her fiancé was able to go on line and see the Petfinder.com posting I had for Angie, and liked the dog. He will decide later tonight. (I told her should could take him on trial, no problem; we'll hold the check until she's happy.)

So we wait -and hope!

Has Ann caught up, yet?  (I guess I could have knocked on her door and asked her.)

Whew! Just returned home from the production. It went very well. I was quite nervous, but the cast seemed to thrive in front of the audience. Got good laughs in the right places. The little touches I added went over well, and the writer was pleased.

Just a week ago, I hadn't thought the show would turn out that well. It was  going okay, but it didn't have that zing, so I didn't really tell too many folks about it.

As is my tradition, I brought a flower for each of the actors, except one of them got a carrot. Okay, not really.

Thanks for the patented HHW vibes!

What time is the performance, Tom?

It was a matinee today at 3. Tomorrow at 7. Then six more shows over the next two weeks.

Thanks. What helps is with an evening of one-acts, that they be short, and there is no intermission. A big thing I've endured in the past is people watch their friends in a one-act play and leave at intermission.

The other thing that helps is that all of the other plays are at least pretty good. Two are musicals.

I wish I could understand the appeal of MY NAME IS EARL.  I think that Jason Lee is very talented and fairly charming, but I honestly think I would prefer to watch an adenoid surgery than another espisode of EARL.

And that's horseracing.  I think SCRUBS and EARL are the only two watchable comedies on tv at the present time.  Maybe it's my father's white trash Appalachian past and the fact that my family was dragged through every trailor park in Southwest Ohio to visit families of my Father's co-workers and friends, but I identify strongly with the humor of MY NAME IS EARL, and I applaud its humor, outrageousness, heart, and wonderful cast.

I'm finally catching the second half of ELIZABETH I; I tried the other day and it hadn't yet landed on HBO On Demand.

Intermission (mine, self-imposed) in the Peter Jackson King Kong.  Oy, it took a long time for that creature to make an appearance.  DH Richard watched it last night and was "kind" enough to keep it from Netflix for me to watch tonight (he's helping with a Special Olympics fundraiser).  DS Rob, who saw KK in the theater and who was at an all-night Relay for Life (cancer fundraiser) last night has gone to bed.  It's just me and Kong  ::)

In a reversal of the TOD, I wish they hadn't used Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells as source music for a few sequences in The Exorcist.  The opening of Oldfield's first major work is all that is heard in the film, yet there are people who cannot erase the film from their minds when they hear the rest of the piece.  A shame, really, because some of the music of Tubular Bells is flat-out funny!

JAWS - Each of the shark attacks

E.T. - The bicycles over the moon

PSYCHO - The shower scene

LAWRENCE OF ARABIA - The ride through  the desert

Ah yes, I would count Tubular Bells in THE EXORCIST as a great blend of music and movie.  And I, personally, love the entire work.  Thanks for the reminder, Woody.

We're creating the opening credits, then we'll call it a day.  We'll do the end credits on Monday.  We did a really cool thing with the main title, and we also created a rather great Kritzerland logo image for the opening.

Happy Birthday to the Vixter! I hope your mom made a yummy Birthday Cake for you!!

Glad your show went well, Rodzinski.

I got up at 4 a.m. to go on a birdwalk, and I have been tired all afternoon. Saw a lot of neat birds, though.

So we wait -and hope!

der Brucer
The problem with waiting is, the longer you wait the less good the news gets.

Our prospective Angie-adopter called a little while ago.  Her fiance, who had the final say in the matter, said "no."

He's not being a cad, he's realizing the problems that adopting yet another dog into the family can create.  She already has two dogs, and I believe she said that he has one of his own.  I can testify that having a large family of dogs is a lot to handle.

So Angie will be with us for a while longer.  This isn't a sad ending to the story, just a graphic at the end of the episode that reads "To Be Continued..."

I love MY NAME IS EARL, too. The premise is unique, the characters endearing (Earl, Randy, CrabMan) or trashy fun (Joy), and there's humor and sentiment with every episode. My kind of comedy. SCRUBS does that, too.

As if mis-hearing lyrics isn't bad enough, I was half-listening to the Home and Garden Network, and thought I'd heard the hostess refer to something as a "glittering Jew."  Turned out she was referring to a house as a glittering jewel in its neighborhood (my herring must be going), but I sort of liked the concept of a glittering Jew.

I, however, still have Thursday's MY NAME IS EARL and THE OFFICE yet to watch. Should get to them tomorrow. I did manage to watch Friday night's CONVICTION tonight. More cases and fewer personal stories made for a better episode.

The show isn't catching on, however. The ratings have been ebbing since the premiere, and last night's rating was no better than THE BOOK OF DANIEL was generating. I suspect when the 13 episodes have played, that's the last we'll see of CONVICTION. Now that I've gotten involved in the show, I'll ride it to the end (likely only a few more weeks).

I did like seeing Ken Howard, Robert LuPone, Priscilla Lopez, and Stephen Bogardus as guest stars on CONVICTION. Many wonderful NYC actors get to show up regularly on Dick Wolf's shows.

I finished TILL THE CLOUDS ROLL BY. Beautiful Technicolor throughout (thought there were occasional minor color fluctuations). Still looked beautiful.

Alas, all I have left out of the box is THREE LITTLE WORDS. I saved it for last because I had watched my videotape of it just a months and a half ago.

I watched THE INTERPRETER tonight on HBO-HD. It had slipped my mind that Sydney Pollack directed the film (and had a fairly small role in it, too). I was expecting intrigue comparable to THREE DAYS OF THE CONDOR, and it was disapppointing compared to that thrilling film. Still, I did get immersed in it and enjoyed it for the most part.

Again, since it was filmed in NYC, casting pulled wonderful actors from the NYC pool: Robert Clohessey, David Zayas among others. Good to see them working.
