Title: OUT OF THE DOLDRUMS
Post by: bk on May 07, 2006, 12:31:40 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were not especially sweet and pungent but they got the job done, and now it is time for you to post until the sweet and pungent cows come home.

The Los Angeles Times has published it's Summer Sneeks listing. (http://www.calendarlive.com/movies/cl-sneaks2006-sg,0,203178.storygallery?coll=cl-home-top-blurb-right)

So, any films coming up that has your interest piqued?   :D

Conversely, any films coming up that make you feel like something else is coming up?   :P

I do not think I will have to eat again for at least a week.  We have had SOOO much food in the past few days.  First it was a whole in the wall chinese place that was wonderful, then the 9 course meal at Morimoto and last night a 4 course meal at Cuba Libre.  It would have been easy to eat less, but the food was fantastic. And I rarely drink anymore, except when I'm with the people I've been with this week.   I am so ready to go home and get some sleep!

I think the biggest problem was that we ate so late at night, the last course arriving at almost midnight.  For a country girl who normally has dinner about 5:00 PM that was REALLY late

Sunday morning greetings!  You've all probably figured out that I'm back in my home environment.  I got home about 9:30 last night, visited with DH Richard for a while, and then crashed!  It was a long 2 days, but as the newly-installed chair of the same event for next year (April 20-21, 2007, in Tiffin, OH), it won't be a hard act to follow  ::)

I agree with you! It definitely won't be the person who seemed so obvious to be the perpetrator in this episode. But I have in my mind who I think IS the killer. I'll lket you know if I guessed correctly (without mentioning any names) after the finale on Tuesday.

Still keeping my fingers crossed that the show gets picked up for next season. Kristen Bell told TV GUIDE that she just signed a three year contract extension, so she's confident the show is going to get renewed. Here's hoping. . . .

Yup, those are the places. At Morimoto we were in the Oakcase Room. It would have been fun to be in the main dining room. The booths and I think maybe the floors or something else change colors while you dine. Pretty cool looking.

At Cuba Libre we were upstairs. It was a memorial celebration of a friend's life. He killed himself a few months ago.  Will Smith and family were in an adjoining room. No one bothered them while they were eating, but on their way out they passed through our room and he was extremely friendly, signing autographs for a couple kids who were there and shaking hands. I wasn't near that area but could see from a distance. It made me smile to see how gracious he was.

During last week's episode, I almost thought that that was what was going to happen (what an unseemly sentence!), but then I forgot about paying attention during the rest of the episode.  And when the moment came in this week's episode, I KNEW it, but was still unprepared! :o

Rodzinski and I attended the Spring Fling for our friend's theater company, the same company producing the ten minute play he directed.  There was a silent auction- I started by bidding on some jewelry and a large collection of DVD's from A&E.  But I ended up focusing my attention on and winning a script of the Grey's Anatomy pilot autographed by the cast.  It also came with a baseball cap commemorating the superbowl show (EBAY?) and the series soundtrack.

Thanks, DR JRand.  Interestingly, it emerged yesterday that one of the Tiffin people with whom I will be working very closely over the next year and I were classmates in The University of Michigan School of Library Science more than 30 years ago.  We didn't know each other, because we were in different parts of the program, but it made for some pretty quick bonding yesterday.

Ginny - how was the meeting??? Congrats on your success!

Thank you, DR PennyO!  We can make many improvements for next year, such as:

Having the break-out sessions be more interactive

Keeping the keynote speeches shorter, allowing more time for Q&A

Selecting a more appropriate title for the All-Convention Read and telling the discussion leaders not to lecture

DR TPunk - there was a silent auction at the event I attended this weekend, too.  Two of my passengers bid on - and won - a huge basket filled with all kinds of chocolate items.  I offered to help them pay for it, but instead they gave me whatever I wanted as reimbursement for gas.  Fair trade, dontcha think  ;D

Saw TARZAN again the other night.  It certainly moves a lot faster than it did about a week into previews, and with the story moving  along as a better clip, the songs actually felt less burdensome than they did the first time.  It's actually about 20 minutes shorter, although my middle-aged memory keeps me from being able to recount excatly what's been cut.  If only they weren't so intent on getting in under the Tony nomination deadline, this is a show that could use a few more weeks of work and possibly become quite respectable as a family entertainment.

This was too logical a point to believe that anyone actually copied this matter from HHW, but it is a sign that HHW is on the cutting edge:  It was days ago that the question came up as to whether Newark is a little close to Broadway for NJPAC to be presenting THE PRODUCERS and HAIRSPRAY, and now that issue has been taken up on other sites.  Again, it's a logical observation, but now that it's becoming the talk of some of the theater-related internet remember you read it here on HHW first.
Title: Re:OUT OF THE DOLDRUMS
Post by: bk on May 07, 2006, 12:13:21 PM
FJL, there is no question it was seen here first - each and every theater website has people who read the notes and the discussion board here every day, and take what they want.  Don't kid yourself into thinking it's a coincidence - it ain't.

I have had a delightful musical afternoon.

I began with the DVD of THREE LITTLE WORDS. It looks smashing, the best it's ever looked on video. There's a bit of solor instability during "Nevertheless," but otherwise, it's perfection. I also remembered how much I adore the romantic dance "Thinking of You" that Astaire and Vera-Ellen do, one of the great dance duets of all musicals, I think, because it's so unaffected and elegant.

Matt, could you stop by and do my laundry, also?  I don't think I can manage to get it down the two flights of stairs.

If I lived just a WEE bit closer, I wouldn't hesitate to do it. As is, well, I guess I could do it, and by the time I got it back to you, it probably would be dry without even putting it in the dryer.

I also watched the documentary about the making of THREE LITTLE WORDS. Not very informative, but always nice to see Arlene Dahl, Carlton Carpenter, and Gloria DeHaven and know they're still around to talk about the MGM of old.

Those who were under contract there are leaving us, however, so I hope they've got plenty of interview footage with these folks so we can learn as much as possible before there's no one left to talk about life there.

And I guess folks like Debbie Reynolds wanted too much money to grant an interview for the DVD.

You had exactly the same reaction to it I had. I adored the show when it was being televised, was in agony when it was canceled without airing all the episodes that had been filmed, and then treasured each episode I watched in the boxed set.

The film SERENITY is quite wonderful but very bittersweet. I will say no more.

After enjoying THREE LITTLE WORDS so much, I decided I'd watch another 1950 musical, so I put in the laserdisc of TWO WEEKS WITH LOVE. Such a fun, easy-going musical treat, and Ricardo Montalban never looked sexier or more handsome in his life. Those tailored suits by Walter Plunkett fit him like a glove, and when he appears in that Prince getup for Jane Powell's fantasy number "My Hero," well, he is TO DIE FOR!

After watching that, I saw that there was another musical in that laserdisc sleeve (it was one of MGM's double feature laserdiscs), so I put in RICH, YOUNG, and PRETTY.

It looks glorious on laserdisc! I'm sure if it were ever to be transferred to DVD, it would look stupendous, but even with this transfer, it pops off the screen with glorious Technicolor and those charming songs.

Along with THE PIRATE, I LOVE MELVIN, LOVELY TO LOOK AT, SUMMER HOLIDAY, and TWO WEEKS WITH LOVE, I've now added RICH, YOUNG, AND PRETTY to my list of avidly requested MGM Technicolor musicals on DVD.

I have always heard that he is a very nice person Cilla.

Safe flying vibes and have a safe journey home. The food sounds wonderful.

BTW, I someteims eat at midnight... The evils of being a night owl!

Comments on last Friday's season finale of GHOST WHISPERER.

Jennifer, I have been waiting for your comments on GHOST WHISPERER.  I cried during several parts of the episode, but lost it completely at the end.

Just know you're not the only one who cried. IT was incredibly moving.

Does anyone know if Aisha Tyler is on contract for next season? I cannot imagine the show without her.  I love the relationship between her and melinda, and between melinda and her husband.

My first thought (since i cannot imagine the show without andrea) is that she could perhaps stay in limbo (as a spirit) for next year.

My dad (who also watches the show) believes that the bad guy with the black hat will somehow bring her back to life. My dad thinks that the little girl was dead but brought back by the black hat guy.

Me, I think that the girl was not dead, but merely in a comatype state where you have the choice of coming back or not (i think i watch too many soaps).

I know GHOST WHISPERER is not that popular that spoilers would be around. but i really had no idea that the end was coming. And they did give a lot of clues. I mean a)they showed us the mother/daughter who had been in their car when the plane hit b)they showed only melinda talking to andrea, and c)andrea was wearing the same dingy clothes.

But it still did not occur to me.  I didn't think that brother was dead either. ANd when melinda said he was outside, i thought perhaps he was dead. When he explained that he had taken a later flight I thought that HIS car had perhaps been hit by the plane (that it was his fate to die).

Yeah it was a very upsetting/moving show. I was in total shock.

There's a weekend fundraising fair going on at that Catholic school next to the church one street behind me. (I thought it was two streets when I mentioned it earlier - but it's just one!) They have a bandstand with horrible music (at least today it's country - Friday and yesterday it was blaring bad rock until 10 at night). Anyway, each night they end the thing with fireworks. And it sounds like it's in my backyard - which it almost is. I mean MAJOR fireworks. The noise is horrific - like canons and guns. And I have a bit of ye old post-traumatic stress from my childhood experiences. So loud noises like that totally undo me. Intellectually I know it's only fireworks, but emotionally I'm being shot at and i start to shake and cry. (No, I'm not crazy. It's real.) Anyway, I ain't the only one uncomfortable in this household. Poor Wonderdog (aka Abie) is petrified. I have to lie in the guestroom bed holding him until it ends each night. Well, actually, it's nice for both of us. I comfort him and he comforts me. That's how I've been spending the nights THIS weekend. the glamorous Hollywood life. La-di-dah! Tonight is the last night of the fair, thank goodness.

Good afternoon all!

Thank you for the wonderful birthday greetings both on and off the board!!!

I did do something special for myself today.  I bought my Casio EX-Z850 Exilim video/digital camera.  I can’t take any pictures today because the battery has to charge up but tomorrow….. Ahh tomorrow I will be giving it the test!

I took Bear to the dog park but it was kinda late and no other dogs were there.  We didn’t stay for very long.  Just long enough for the old man to get his feet muddy because he put his big feet into the little plastic pool they had there.

I think that did him some good.  At least it got him out of the house and he had nice car ride.  He’s been sleeping all afternoon.   ;)

Oh, Oz! What a lovely rose... I will always dream of my mother's rose garden, and remember how it felt to walk among those beautiful blooms. I wish you great joy with your flowers!!!

I couldn't resist finally going outside in the rain, to work on my own weed-adorned and slug ingested garden!!! I got so wet within about 15 minutes, that I had to come back inside. Now, for some reason, I have NO electricity... this means, of course, that the pump does not work so I am also without indoor running water, although there is plenty running in the stream just out the door...

I am about to light candles and have a dinner of raw carrots. Ah, the simple life. I feel just like Thoreau... sort of...

Man, is the WUSSBURGERING reaching epic proportions?  I started watching Compulsion at 3:30, but by 3:35 I was zoning out, so I shut it off and just shut my eyes for a little while.  Next thing I knew it was 4:30.  The entire time I was out I dreamed I was lying on my couch like so much fish, and people were talking to me but I couldn't focus and my laptop was on the coffee table and a screen popped up that said there was a "hayman" (I kid you not) on some word and did I want to click the "UTL" to continue - I did, and it screwed up everything on my desktop and computer by making everything an icon and obliterating all text.  Damn "hayman" will do it every time, so don't click on the UTL to continue.  Of course, being in my present state of mind and knowing what path I'm about to perhaps (I'm still slightly in perhaps mode), I have assigned my own words to UTL rather quickly.

Good and Plenty has no fat! Hallelujah! Haven't had that in years. Used to be one of my faves.
I briefly had company this afternoon and made Trader Joe's "Prelude to a Quiche" assorted mini-quiche Hors D'Oeuvres. Mushroom & cheese; artichoke & cheese; and  spinach Florentine. Very yummy. And easy. 15 minutes in the oven at 375 and they're done. Only problem is that when the company left, I ate all the little leftover quiches. (I threw one away for form's sake.)

Tho they were not to blame, Sir.

CHORUS:
Oh today we'll merry merry be
Oh today we'll merry merry be
Oh today we'll merry merry be
And nosh some hamentashen.

And Esther was the lovely queen of King Ahashveyrosh
When Hayman said he'd kill us all,
Oh my how he did scare us.

CHORUS

But Mordechai her cousin bold
Said: "What a dreadful chutzpah
If guns were but invented now,
This Hayman I would shoot, Sir."

Maria, while no where near as traumatic, there are certain breath smells that affect me emotionally.  My mother would cover up the smell of alcohol with mouthwash.  So oddly enough the smell of liquor is fine with me but certain mouthwashes, boy or boy.   All I have to do is turn my head & the problem is solved, not so easy with fireworks.

Are you okay when you watch them?  They are so beautiful & you can see the cause of the noise.

Are you okay when you watch them? [Fireworks]  They are so beautiful & you can see the cause of the noise.

If I'm far enough away, it's quite nice. It's just that this is SO loud that it even set off car alarms on my street.

I wish I'd toured in THE DYBBUK rather than spend all those years in Yeshivah.  :)

Just kidding, Yeshivah of Flatbush actually gave me a great education.

TCB how long will it take after your surgery before you can walk stairs?  What will you do about your laundry?  I'm glad the "kids" are close by to fetch you food, etc.

Will Ann watch the babies while you are away?

Last night we watched the Genisis awards.  I will admit we did speed through a few of the exceptionally difficult scenes.  All & all it was excellent & we plan to watch next year.  I think Keith cried more over the Katrina (a black lab) story than I did.

After watching clips from the Animal Planet special, Jane Goodall’s When Animals Talk, I have TIVO set to record it next it airs again.

Jane, after the hospital stay and the week in rehab, I should be able to return to my apartment.  I will be able to do the stairs, it will just take me a lot longer on a walker.  I have a dear friend who will come over and pick up my laundry for me when I first get home.

I am hoping that Jed and Ann will take care of the kids.

I finished RICH, YOUNG, AND PRETTY, and on the end of the laserdisc was the theatrical trailer. It was an interesting one with David Rose (who was the film's music director) narrating and offering a preview devoid totally of superlatives and oversell. Quite refreshing to see this.

And CROSSING JORDAN

spoiler - - - - - - -

featured the murder of Jordan's ex-lover for which she has been framed. It's the season finale which means, of course, there's a cliffhanger and a solution that will spill over into next season.

Thankfully, the show was renewed and will be back to finish the story! Only, at this point, we don't know what night of the week NBC will move it to. I'm guessing Friday at 10 p.m. next season, but that's purely a guess.

Please tell Mr. Boorman I have given up and wish I could have the hour I wasted back.  Incoherent mess, beyond belief, especially after Point Blank.  Everyone was clearly on drugs.

Boorman replies, "Aw gee, BK, don't be such a boor, man."

And I say, sorry you suffered, but sometimes you gotta suffer that others may not. I'll cross that one off the list of must-sees!

Other than DELIVERANCE and POINT BLANK, I don't know what else Boorman brought to the table. Seems like there should be some more good ones in his oevre. I always enjoyed ZARDOZ, but I have to admit it is a psychotically weird movie.

And he's done some real painful errors like EXORCIST II and WHERE THE HEART IS.

I've never seen EXCALIBUR. HOPE AND GLORY is not bad. EMERALD FOREST okay.

2100 posts is a major event!
Isn't there a TV show called THE 2100?
Not to be confused with THE 700 CLUB.

Wasn't it a prequel to "The 4400?"
