Well, you've read the notes, you know the drill, you know the routine, you know the vibe, and now it is time for you to post until the cow's come home - they're currently at the local Hooter's having their TGIF evening.

Ain't it the truth?  Although it is a work day for me, I will survive.  I only have to go one place, as opposed to MR BK who is on his way to at least a half dozen.

One of the last episodes of Sell This House that we watched before we downgraded our cable service had Chastity Bono trying to sell her place. Apparently Cher is a big fan of the show and since Chaz was having trouble unloading the place Mom contacted the show and she got a helping hand. It was actually a good episode.

I LOVE Oscar Brand. It's amazing that he's still on radio lo these many years. He's got a show on WNYC (http://www.wnyc.org/), our public radio station.

We went to see the Posideon Adventure last night. The real one. From 1972. With Shelly Winters in all her glory and Stella Stevens in all her underwear. It was part of Chelsea Classics night. $6 at Chelsea Cinemas, Where Dreams Come True, plus a floor show with Hedda Lettuce. What a hoot! We then came home and watched the taped episode of Will and Grace. Oh, my, they are not going out on a high note. The whole sub plot between Bernadette Peters and Karen as sisters was so unfunny that it was almost painful to watch. What a waste of talent.

We have no video or DVD plans this weekend because our social calendar is full!

Tomorrow (Saturday) after a haircut and possible play time with a friend's dog. He (the friend) is out of town and if it's not raining tomorrow, (not likely), I will take Homer to the dog run so he can get out of the kennel for a couple of hours. After that we go visitin' to Anthony's cousin on the Upper West Side. One last visit before he goes away for six weeks.

He (Anthony) doesn't leave until May 20th but he will be on Long Island all next week getting ready. He will drive in to the city on Friday, park the car in front of the apartment, pack up and then leave on Saturday for his drive to Virginia.

On Sunday we are visiting also! We know this cute couple who live uptown near The Cloisters (http://www.metmuseum.org/works_of_Art/department.asp?dep=7). We thought we would go up and see them before Anthony leaves. If it's not raining (again not likely according to the weather report) we will go Cloistering, otherwise we will have brunch and laugh and talk and give Tom Tryon books to them and then come home. A good time is expected.

Some of you might know this couple. They go by the names Tom and Antonia  ;)

And of course this is our ReadaRama weekend, when all the cheapskates come in to find out their futures, but that's okay.

For DR MattH, re: the season finale of VERONICA MARS.

do not read if you do not want to know the spoilers.

.

OMG!!!!!!!  I got the tape last night at dinner and could not wait to watch it last night.

I will say this the actual killer was not really that much of a surprise. I also had been thinking this could be the guy (or his brother).  But the more interesting part was how everything connected (not sure why but i never expected him to be missing from that baseball photo). That part of the story and the abuse was brilliant. And I am not sure why I did not see that coming.

What was interesting was all that happened. I had to keep stopping the tape and processing because everything was happening so fast. I have never seen so much new info being presented so quickly.

All that good stuff happened and there was still 20 minutes left.

The most gut-wrenching moment was when the killer set off the plane bomb. I was not sure what we would find out about that (i figured it would be left as a cliff-hanger). But it was so moving and i was mesmerized.

And all that stuff with the bacon was incredible. ANd with logan! Wow.

And you keep thinking it's over. And then we see Kendall and all that money, and then veronica is not met at the airport. What a crazy show.

Do you know when we will find out if it will be back next year?

Unfortunately (and I say this because the songs will NOT getout of my head, and I must keep playing them), the CD with "My Name is Jack" by Manfred Mann; "Bing Bang Bong" by Sophia Loren and "Will I What?" by Mike Sarne is playing and playing and playing.
Jack and Tomovoz may have to rescue me soon.  This is worse than Merlin Jones!!

What is this with haircuts?  Our esteemed BK wants a haircut.  Ben wants a haircut.  I had my hair cut just yesterday.   I don't like it.  (My haircut, not the trend.)  My hair, which I've grown out from it's former flattop, isn't parting correctly, and the new cut just makes things worse.  Bleh.

Good morning, all!  I've almost finished packing, I have a few errands to run and some laundry to do.  I'll be heading to the Dayton airport around 2 pm, and my flight's at 5.  Keep those travel vibes coming!

Last night my sister-in-law Jo Ann, who's one phenomenal cook, made dinner for my father and me.  I hadn't seen my nephew Cory all week, so I got to see him last night and learn what he's been up to now that he has his own apartment.  Then I went over to my brother Tom's to say goodbye.  He and his wife are the performers in the family, and they're working on a demo at the moment.

DR Sandra, I didn't get a chance to congratulate you last night!  You looked wonderful in your cap and gown.  Absolutely radiant.

TGI Friday morning greetings!  Just came from a breakfast meeting on the 29th floor of the tallest building in Dayton.

TOD:

CD(car) - Mamma Mia! cast recording - I got so depressed driving to work this morning, with the gloomy weather and all the talk on NPR about domestic spying and such, I needed something upbeat and frothy.

DVD - I think from Netflix we have Chronicles of Narnia and The Family Stone.

DR Ben - you mentioned several things in your earlier posts that are favorites of mine:  Cowardy Custard, Tom Tryon books, and that cute couple on the upper west side  ;).

Hello!! It is a grey, foggy drizzily day here on the Island of Long... blech!!

I am taking half a day today and getting home early to get ready for the Vixter's Sleepover Party for tonight.  I have to drive out to my brother's house to collect one of my nieces and then back to pick up the other two girls and then we are going out for pizza, then to a local theatre group, The Janmes Street Players, of Babylon Village,  to see Barnum then back home for chocolate fountain dipping,(Yes der B we bought one of those! Only $25 at Walmart!)  Magic Bullet ice cream concoctions, jewelry making and scary video game (a game called Nightmare where you watch a VHS tape while playing a board game) I may check in after we get home from the play after the girls get organized.

Laters!!

re VERONICA MARS -

The May upfronts start next week. Each network anounces its fall schedule and that's when we'll know what is staying and what is going. NBC is up first on Monday, but I am not sure which of the networks come after them day by day (a GODSPELL reference).

I know some other things about the plans for VERONICA MARS for next season as far as cast and storylines. I won't write them if you're not interested in knowing ahead of time.

I am sitting around waiting for a phone call from a therapist from my internship.  We were supposed to speak at 11:15 about the two cases she is taking over from me.  But she wasn't there when I called so I left a message with my home phone number for her to call me back.  She is now 20 minutes late for our conversation.  I understand that things come up, but my plan was to talk with her until noon then rush out of here so I could do a little graduation dress shopping and pick up some lunch before heading in to work at 2.  I am only hanging around here until 12:15 then I am going to skedadle (sp?)

While this is not "dirty" or "sexual" in nature, this IS potentially d-i-s-g-u-s-t-i-n-g, so readers easily d-i-s-g-u-s-t-e-d should skip it:

PAY ATTENTION!

First-year students at Texas A&M's Vet School were receiving their
first anatomy class, with a real dead cow. They all gathered around
the surgery table with the body covered with a white sheet.

The professor started the class by telling them, "In veterinary
medicine, it is necessary to have two important qualities as a doctor:

The first is that you not be disgusted by anything involving the
animal's body. As an example, the Professor pulled back the sheet,
stuck a finger into the anus of the dead cow, withdrew it and stuck
 a finger in his mouth.

"Go ahead and do the same thing," he told his students. The students
freaked out, hesitated for several minutes. But eventually took turns sticking a finger in the anal opening of the dead cow and then placing their fingers in their mouths.

When everyone finished, the Professor looked at them and told them,
"The second most important quality is observation. I stuck my middle finger into the cow, but it was my index  finger I put in my mouth.  Now learn to pay attention!"

Cute shoes, TPunk! I, myself, have a pair covered with RED glitter - which I trot out for almost every revue I direct - usually as a prop or part of the set - but sometimes, I wear them, if even for a moment... they were featured in my show, too...

DVD - The Firm
Video - Broadcast News!!!

Today is cloudy, drizzly and cold - I think I'll head into Bellevue to look (again!) for a skirt to go with the blue velvet top I'm wearing to next week's wedding of Tami's son. Tired of shopping... I was born tired of shopping.

The little feral cat came by yesterday, when I whistled for the jays. Same cat, third year in a row!!! he looks plenty fat these days - and my house is mouse-free. I put out some cat food for him, but he just sniffed it and walked away - he likes fresh-killed meat so much better, I'm guessing, and probably had just feasted on hapless furry lunch...

...Tired of shopping... I was born tired of shopping.

Me, too, DR PennyO!  I constantly remind my DH how lucky he is that I hate to shop, especially when I have to find a particular thing by a certain time.  Now, when I'm on vacation and not looking for anything in particular - that's a different matter entirely.

Also, one of my signals that I'm too busy is when I don't even have time to shop online.

The May upfronts start next week. Each network anounces its fall schedule and that's when we'll know what is staying and what is going. NBC is up first on Monday, but I am not sure which of the networks come after them day by day (a GODSPELL reference).

Has anyone heard anything about "Surface" returning?

Great story, I shared it with a co-counselor on the hotline and she's going to use it in a class she teaches in observation.

There is a lot of excitement in the soundtrack community today.

One of the specialty labels -- Intrada, based right here in Oakland CA -- has announced the first of three 2-CD anthology albums of original TV scores to the series "Amazing Stories."

The series has a lot of fans, especially among film music fans, because the series used many high-profile, excellent film composers to score episodes -- John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, Danny Elfman, Alan Silvestri, Thomas Newman, Bruce Broughton, Georges Delerue, James Horner, David Shire, Leonard Rosenman, Michael Kamen, etc. -- that remain memorable as much for the music as for the stars and stories...some even more so because of the music.

For YEARS, fans have begged the specialty labels to acquire this music, but it is only now that all the obstacles have been surmounted.

At any rate, if anyone here has a love for the series and remembers the music with fondness, Volume 1 (http://shopping.netsuite.com/s.nl;jsessionid=ac112b1c1f4343cc1dc6d707480f916c906d54701fec.e3eTaxePaNqNe34SaNiKaNeSe6fznA5Pp7ftolbGmkTy?c=ACCT67745&category=7&it=A&id=4891) is available in a 3,000-edition pressing. Hurry.  Supplies may not last.  The prices is $29.99.  Music samples at the link above.

DRV: 1930S version of SHOWBOAT (I have messed up the taping of this movie every previous time it has been shown, so  hope this time it works out!)

quote]

I have it on two different laserdiscs (one from Criterion and one from MGM). If something went wrong and you still didn't get it, I can certainly burn you a copy of the film. Let me know.

I think I read somewhere that Warners is working on a DVD boxed set of the three SHOW BOAT movies (similar to the laserdisc set), and this would be awesome to have.

First up this afternoon was last night's CSI. Yes, as per all the advertisements for the episode, one of the team did get shot. This person's life hangs in the balance through next week's cliffhanger.

Not the greatest of episodes last night, however. The case they were investigating wasn't especially interesting, and there was A LOT of talk about marriage among all the team members last night.

Then, I put in JUPITER'S DARLING on laserdisc.

I got this years ago and had only watched it once. It was Esther Williams' last MGM musical, and the last one for Marge and Gower Champion at the studio, too.

The movie was filmed in Eastmancolor, and the first reel looked fairly bland with faded color and dirt on the image. Later reels were VERY colorful and looked in better shape. The sound seemed softer and must have been recorded at a lower level. I had to turn up my receiver to get decent volume for the feature.

Ironically, the laserdisc also added a cut number (George Sanders' only song in the film and the best of the numbers featuring the CHampions. That clip, however, had started to turn pink and is in really bad shape.)
Title: Re:TGIF
Post by: Matt H. on May 12, 2006, 01:32:54 PM
In a laserdisc mood, I next put on A DATE WITH JUDY. This is an old transfer, and the Technicolor was not very vibrant. Clips from the film featured in THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT are deeply saturated and burst with color, but the print used for this old laser transfer was not especially sharp or colorful.

I've spent from ten this morning until now writing the new song that's to replace the song that didn't work at all in our musical.  This one is SO much better - I've been struggling with it for weeks.  David and I came up with an idea about what it should be about, and then I sort of came up with a bossa nova tune but I couldn't make it work.  Two days ago, I wrote a new tune, a cross between a 50s TV show song and a Gidget song - so right, and then I just had to get the lyric right.  It's got a few really good laughs in it too, always a plus.

What a hoot!....

This was on AMC just last night!  I taped it and will watch it sometime...I also taped the made-for-TV remake and will watch that, too.  My niece wants to see the new in-the-theater major motion picture, "Posideon," so I'll get the whole history.

Otherwise, in my VCR:  tapes to tape tonight's shows, ABC from 9-11, NBC from 9-11 and Sci-Fi from 9-10.

In my DVD player:  nothing that I can think of.  I'm still house-sitting, so I haven't taken the time to watch much of either Taboo or Jerry Springer:  The Opera.  This is the last weekend, so maybe sometime next week.  We'll see. ;)

In my CD player:  a few CDs through very, very, very (that's three verys) kind courtesy of DR Elmore!  Then the concert version of South Pacific with Reba and Stokes.  You'd think that I would've brought some Cheryl Bentyne (of The Manhattan Transfer) CDs, since I'm going to see her perform tonight!!  But I didn't.  I do have Janis Siegel's CD, "A Thousand Beautiful Things," which is very good. :)

I'm attending a luncheon celebrating  the 60th birthday of my School friend Gavin today.  I think we've seen each other four times sinces we were in our twenties and had very occasional email contact.  I'm not sure that I really want to step back into my teenage years but I guess the other guests may well feel the same. We are different but the same! The more we change ......

Tomorrow I get to see a production of "The Scarlet Pimpernel".  The same (very good) Company produced "J & H" last year. I suspect this show will have the same (low) level of enjoyment for me.  I doubt if I've bothered playing the OBC recording more than once!  I like to support the non-professional companies and am pleased they are not just bothering with the tried and true.

I'd choose The Bad Sleep Well - excellent film.

Back from a haircut and then a too-brief rehearsal.  2/3rds of the people who said they'd be there weren't.  Still, I blocked right through to the end of the act, and the student that's assisting me wrote everything down and will give it to the applicable people.  Then I came home.

When I arrived at LACC I was told that we couldn't rehearse in the theater because the show that opens next Friday was going to be in there.  Since it was the director of that show that said I COULD be in the theater, I threw a royal shit fit at the tech lady who was telling me - I threatened to pull the plug on the show and the class, and that I was sick of being thought of as some toy or addendum.  We rehearsed in the theater, so I guess it worked.

Had a nice evening. I bought a cute bistro table and two chairs for the front porch area.  It's perfect. I'm looking forward to sitting out there with a cup of coffee or tea in the morning or to look up at the stars at night.

It's a beautiful cool evening. How nice.

DR Jennifer, about VERONICA MARS:

First off, the characters of Jackie and Duncan are done on the show. Their characters are not supposed to figure into next year's storylines at all. Also, Kendall Casablancas (will not be a regular and may not make many appearances at all next year.

Next year, there will not be a season long mystery arc. Instead, there will be three mystery arcs that will run for 1/3 of the season each and then wrapped up only to have another begin. I believe the producers feel the show hasn't caught on more because if you miss any episodes along the way, the season-long mystery is lost to the viewer. This way, if you miss one episode or even one whole mystery arc, you won't be lost for the rest of the season.

Well, Lucy plays "Lucille Ball" in the film BEST FOOT FORWARD, but I certainly think she's better in something like FANCY PANTS or even DUBARRY WAS A LADY (even though she doesn't sing for herself except in "Friendship" at the end of the film.)

I got a new piece of video equipment today, so I wanted to test it with what I consider the best DVD transfer of a recent movie I could think of - CHICAGO. It looked just wonderful.

Next, I put in BATMAN BEGINS since it has so many grays and blacks as part of its design. It, too, delivered everything I could hope for in video quality.

FInished out the night's viewing with CONVICTION on NBC. Not very interesting cases this week, and with all the inter-office dating and romances going on, it's a very crowded, exhausting show. I don't suspect it's going to be renewed, so there will only be an episode or two more to go.

Winner of the Cheesiest DVD packaging for Emmy Consideration: I kid you not - the DVDs for the TEN COMMANDMENTS mini-series arrived today. Each of the 2 DVDs is embedded in a faux-tablet like Moses brought down from the Mount. Oy!

While I was watching CONVICTION, I noticed the sound wasn't quite right. At a commercial, I did a sound check of my speakers, and sure enough, the right front speaker was dead. So, I had to go through the arduous task of crawling back behind the receiver to check connections. They looked OK, no wires were sticking out or looking obviously unconnected. I brought in another speaker and swapped it out with the one currently being used to see if the speaker itself was dead. Still no sound.

So, I once again I got behind the receiver, undid the right speaker connections and then reattached them. Did the test, and NOW it worked just fine.

But it was SO much trouble getting back there with that tangle of wires. You gotta love this stuff to endure these problems occasionally.

I've read that wireless surround systems are on the way. They can't come fast enough for me (though I'm sure the price will be prohibitive at first.)

Back from Staples - had to make some more copies of the new play - it's going out to two theaters on Monday.

Ran into my Russian masseuse whilst there.

Back from the gym. And finished watching HOT SUMMER NIGHT...starring my interviewee Ms. Colleen Miller...she is so pretty in this film. It co-stars James Best who is such an interesting actor...and he really played some scary characters in his early career.

Since nobody has danced yet, let's let pretty Colleen Miller of Beverly Hills, California have the honors!

Good evening all.  I have spent the last three hours watching the end of season one and beginning of season two of Alias.  It makes me feel sad about how much the show has gone downhill since then.

Not just sad. Tragic. A tragedy of epic proportions.

I know producers need to make 100 episodes of a series to hope to make their productions costs back via syndication, but this show was never meant to run five years, at least not when it took the turns it took early on.

Sleepover so far.... picked up my niece, discovered one girl had a dance class rehearsal and one had a swim team practice and neither could join us for dinner,so the niece, the Vixter & I went out to a little Italian place where I had chicken marsala and they had pizza

That's what they ordered!! They coulda had an entree!!!!

Collected the other two girls and off we went to Barnum.  The Vixter and I had quite a few friends in the show and although it could have benefitted from a more charasmatic leading man, it was fun and it ended very well... the energy , the colors, the performance really left on a wonderful high note.

Home again for a chocolate fountain fondue with strawberries, blueberries, marshmallows, orange slices, pretzels, apples and bananas for diping , then smoothies with the aforementioned  fruits and vanilla icecream and milk.

The the girls played "Nigtmare" the video board game in which they had to complete a board game within the one hour time fromt he video staring and the "Gate Keeper" keeps suddenly appearing on the screen and yelling at them and telling them to do things .  It was a lot of fun watching them scream everytime he suddenly appeared.

Now they are making jewlwely and calming down intheother room....since its just about 2 AM  I think I will give them a 30 minute warning to finish up and get to the bedroom so I can finally join Vixdad  in bed upstairs ( he went to bed ages ago... but not before suddenly appearing inthe livingroom wearing a scull mask while the girls were playing Nightmare... I suspect we woke the neighbors with the sceaming that ensued)
