Well, you've read the notes, you've now got June fever, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're out searching for their favorite June - Wilkinson.

George, remember the old ad for Heinz ketchup called Anticipation...

WEll the banner I am making is for a STephen Nichols - Matt Ashford fan. Their characters on Days are brothers and SN has not been on the show in 16 years.

I prefer something more classy...

I made one for a person saying "I dont want a snack, I want a STACK ATTACK"  STACK = STeve + Jack

I'm up at 3:45 a.m. because I had a headache...sinuses, and all that, dontchaknow!

I decided to take something for it, but I was feeling a bit clogged in my throat (phlegmwise), so I did some gargling to dislodge "stuff".  Afterward, swalloing a couple of sinus tabs was a breeze.  However, during my gargle, I got a bit of warm water on my face and realized that I was going to have to shave in a few hours.  So....

Now here I sit, headache mostly gone, a clean-shaven to boot.

The sandman is working hard to move me from this here chair over into my warm bed (warm because the air is still and it's a bit "close" but still comfy).

What better way to spend a few quality moments early in the a.m. than visiting here and posting some thoughts?

Nothing, that's what!

My Uncle Lester loved the works of Ezra Pound.

My Uncle George teased him a lot about it, too.  He loved to call my Uncle Les "quid", because that was the British reference to the word "pound"  as a monetary unit.

Many a time would quid 'n'unc-le George go at it, leaving the rest of us laughing gleefully.

Good morning, all!  I have a day mostly out of the apartment:  Toyland and the NYPL Theatre Collection.  I'm moving quite slowly at the moment, however, because my allergies kicked in and I took some nighttime allergy medication.  I also had further unsettling news about my Dad from my sister-in-law Donna, who's coping with a cancerous father, a recently-diagnosed diabetic mother, and a cancerous father-in-law, all of whom can be handfulls.

SR Swishy Sarah, nice to see you back.

DR Jane, the first in your photographic series of copulating fauna was quite intriguing.  Does NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC know you're at liberty?

June 10 was my Dad's birthday and also that of my best friend when I was a youngen.  My best friend always had fun birthday parties that I hated missing on the very odd years that my family had an actual celebration for my Dad.  And yet, on the years that I attended my friend's parties, I felt guilty about not being home with my Dad.  Such a heavy burden I carried.

Good Morning all.  Thank you all for the sore throat vibes and thankyou to RLP for  the salt water  remedy.

I feel guilty and stupid for complaining about my petty sore throat when Elmore's Dad, and his SIL's parents and Jane's friend are all dealing with much more serious issues ands TCB is busy mending after a hip replacement.

However since I have essentially lost my voice (not necessarily a bad thing in some people's opinons) I am actually attempting to see the Dr this afternoon to see what he can see.  he doesn't open his office  until noon so I've left a message on  his machine and will see when they can fit me in.

Good morning!

After the cool morning we had yesterday, I was hopeful our heat wave was nearing its end, but no such luck! It's going to be 87 today (already in the high 70s) though the five day forecast does promise cooling to the high 70s by Monday.

I know it's June, but PLEASE let this happen.

Good morning, dear friends! It's another cloudy, mebbe more rain kinda day up here. So I'll plant all those flowers I bought the other day. That'll be a nice rainy day activity.

There is a little brown mouse that lives in the house with me - I see him more frequently. I really should make a note to buy a live trap - I have been down to town a few times, and jes plumb fergot. I bet he'd like peanut butter...

June 6 is my mom's birthday. Likewise her father's birthday. I reckon the rest of the family will take flowers to the cemetary. I was moved to buy Yorzeit candles yesterday - that's a Jewish memorial candle one lights on the anniversary of a loved one's death. (Most of Yiddish is from Medieval German... so Yor: from German Jahr - "year" and Zeit: from German Zeit - "time" = Time of Year.) Jews are big on Remembrance... I know it was about 6 or 7 weeks premature, but I've been thinking about these first Yorzeits, and I saw them in Albertson's...

Jeepers, it's peaceful up here. My own private retreat center... got the piano, the guitar, crayons and drawing paper, glue sticks and beads and sequins, blank books for journal entries, a wonderful library of books, wads of sheet music and opera scores, got videos and CD's, got internet. Got semi-tame wildlife. Got a forest and a stream and a garden... Who would NOT be at peace in such a place...

THE SOUND OF MUSIC is one amazing show. Nearly 50 years old with a movie version that was a world-wide phenomenon, and yet stage versions still remain cash cows. We didn't play to en empty seat for the three week run of the last version I did (350 seat house). A more recent version playing at a new 1,000 seat theater here had frequent sellouts last fall.

Vixmom - sometimes I lose my voice in order to shut me up so I can hear the private things I need to say to myself...

But, apparently, people with kids lose their voices from ailments the little ones bring home from school. I think Chas lost his voice - and the whole shebang - because he had such negative feelings about the biz and felt trapped by his career... some folks for whom I have been voice teacher/coach had vocal troubles as a symptom of their being unable to express certain hard truths... Fifth Chakra stuff is so interesting...

I agree with you, and in the last Davis boxed set, I bought individual titles I didn't already have rather than the entire box.

However, that being said, every review I've read has remarked on the much improved image quality of JEZEBEL and BABY JANE, particularly the latter. BABY JANE has also been updated to a two-disc edition with extra features not on the first one. Additionally, the box contains that outstanding STARDUST: The Bette Davis Story documentary only available in this set (or recorded off TCM the next time it airs.)

elmore & DRLaura- at first we thought the snakes might be mating.  However, if they were mating it would have taken longer than the 5 minutes they spent together, and their position would have been more circular.  Also there would have been some spasms of joy.

I love book jackets and, as a book collector, know the jacket usually increases the value of the book by about four times.  I've often bought a book purely for the jacket.

Some favs:

Lots of my Sabatini jackets have great swashbuckling covers.

The Sax Rohmers lots of mysterious East atmosphere.

All the old Edgar Rice Burroughs jackets from J. Allen St. John up to Frazetta.

N.C. Wyeth did both some Sabatini and Burroughs jackets.

I have lots of fine action covers by fine action illustrators by fine action writers like P.C. Wren, Talbot Mundy, and Robert E. Howard.

I also own some pulp magazines with terrific covers, some by the wonderful Margaret Brundage, who illustrated for Weird Tales.

I got the Bette Davis set last night, using credit.  Here's the Amoeba joke.  Mostly everything in the store is list price unless they get a promo.  So, they've got the single two-disc version of Baby Jane for $24.95, list price.  Then they have about thirty copies of the box set, all promos (the only way to tell is that the bar code has a black line drawn through it) and those are 34.95.  So, even though I didn't want the box set I got it, and will get rid of what I don't want.  I'll watch Baby Jane first so I can report on it.

Oh, I remember that place!  In January, I took my DH Richard past it and told him all about our stop there (we'd have eaten there ourselves, but were on our way to Cowgirl).  Do you think I can remember the name and location?  Of course not!

My brother and his family came into town yesterday, and niece (16) and nephew (18) are hanging out with us tonight.  Yesterday, we had a conversation about what they might want to do, which consisted of quite a few whatevers, and I don't knows.  But we did establish that they liked to eat.  So I thought instead of going to a restaurant and spending the rest of the night wandering around, we could incorporate the wandering into the eating and make it last all night.

Yes, I could neither send nor receive e-mail via AOL - they really ought to just give up the ghost.  gmail is the ticket.

I got "too many connections" and fired off an e-mail to our host.  I mean, problem fixed is problem fixed in my book, unless they're having other issues today.  I still think I'm going to have them nuke the first year's posts and have them archived somewhere.

It's always delightful to see TCB arise from his mists of recovery to post.  Last night, he was in rare form.  Very subtle in some ways....LOVED the "Why, was he hungry?" response to one post.

But the one that had me rolling, in stitches, was:To which I submit, the Sisters of Lordy-Have-Mercy certainly have their hands full with you, TCB!

For those hoping to get tickets to ASSASSINS just outside of D.C. at the Signature Theatre:  I know they're saying they're completely sold out for the first five weeks, but if you have the patience to keep checking online, tickets keep popping up.  After being told absolutely no availability for the Saturday night we wanted to go, we just kept checking back online, and tickets started popping up one at a time.  It took making four separate orders, but our party of four got tickets.  So if anyone here (or any people who just read the site without posting) must see ASSASSINS, don't be deterred - keep checking online.)

As for the Topic of the Day...

Nothing in particular comes to mind, but...

When I was in grade school, we had "Library Class".  Once a week, we would head down to the school's library, and we would learn about the library.  Dewey Decimal system, Newberry and Caldecott winners, new acquisitions, etc.  Sometimes the class would just consist of watching a slide show or film of a particular book.  In any case...

For a couple of weeks, we spent time re-jacketing some of the books.  Most of the time, that just consisted of re-wrapping the dust jackets in that plastic overwrap - the name of which escapes me now.  -I'm sure BK and DRs George and Ginny know the correct name.  However, sometimes we had to reconstruct the whole dust jacket which meant we had to re-draw the dust jacket art.  Sometimes we used an overhead projector to "trace" the artwork out, othertimes we just traced the artwork.  And sometimes we just came up with new artwork altogether.  It was a very educational and creative project.

*One of these days I would like to head back to the St. Thomas More Elementary School library and see how many of those dust-jackets and books are still there.

And continuing the Topic of the Day...

With many publishers coming out with special and commemorative editions of the classics, it's been neat seeing what some of the original hardcover dust-jackets look(ed) like.  Both "To Kill A Mockingbird" and "The Catcher in the Rye" were originally introduced to me via their paperback versions when I was in high school, and when HarperCollins and Little, Brown (respectively) released anniversary editions of the books...  -However, I do have to say, I'm still partial to "The Catcher in the Rye" paperback with the maroon cover and orange/gold lettering.

Well.. Since it's Thursday, you could always take them to the Chelsea Clearview Cinemas ("Where Dreams Come True") for the screening on "The Letter" (starring Bette Davis).  Heck, the might even win a pair of tickets to some other event in town from your hostess for the evening, Hedda Lettuce.  And it's only a $6.00 ticket!

All this talk of Village and Chelsea food is making me hungry but I will stay home tonight and continue working on the notes for a certain CD which some DRs are anxiously awaiting. I also have to (I don't have to but I want to) track out the rest of the CD. Most of the work is done thanks to DR George. He recorded the truncated version for me in December and broke it into 16 tracks. I now have to separate the last 20 minutes into about 9 more tracks. It's easy but time consuming and that, dear readers, is why you haven't received your CDs yet  ;)

What do you think?  I like it...I'll have to listen to it several more times to decide how much I like it, but so far, I like it a lot. :)

There are two things I dislike.  First, the slo-o-o-o-w tempos.  Some parts--some entire songs--drag on like dirges.  No wonder this recording went to two discs.

I also don't care for Daniel Evans as Act One George.  He has a Scottish accent which get muddied up throughout (especially during the part with the two dogs.)  He has a beautiful voice and I think he's fine as Act Two George, but I don't think he carries off Seurat at all.  (Is Act One George ever referred to as Seurat?  Hmmmm...)

Otherwise, I love Jenna Russell as Dot/Marie.  Not as good of a singer as BP, but she acts the roles much better.

I also like the new orchestrations.  In fact, I like how this entire recording sounds.  I don't know what the technical term is, but it's the "warmest" cast recording I've heard in years.   There's a robust, full-bodied sound overall.

And it's a treat to have the entire score included, though I wish not as much of the spoken dialogue was present (a wish I have for all cast recordings in general.)

DR TPunk - The burger place in question is "The Burger Joint".  It's on Bleecker Street @ MacDougal, a block from 6th Ave. (Avenue of the Americas).  *It's also across the street from Porto Rico, that great coffee place.  **And there's also a great Indian "kati roll" place a few doors away.

*Alas, I think the burgers may have gone up from $1.00 to $1.50 for the plain ones.  Still a very tasty bite.

-Need a tour guide?  ;)

Bleecker Street @ MacDougal?  Isn't that the block where the Sullivan Theatre is, or used to be?  That is where THE FANTASTICKS was performed for 374 years (or something like that)

The Burger Joint ($1 burgers, $2 fries)
190 Bleecker St.

I saved my list of the walking tour. :)  Unfortunately they didn't have mini veggie burgers.

I have real issues with the red hat ladies.  The whole point of the poem is that when I'm old I can do whatever I want. According to an article on Playbill.com:

Les Miz Tour Plays Performance No. 7,000 June 1 in Seattle (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/100036.html)

"The national tour of Les Miserables will play its 7,000th performance on June 1 during its Seattle engagement at the 5th Avenue Theatre."

And then it goes on to say:

"Producer Cameron Mackintosh announced on Feb. 17, 2006 this national touring production will end its 18-year record-setting run on July 23, 2006 in St. Louis, MO having played 151 cities for 521 engagements. (For those keeping score, there have been cast changes and hiatuses along the way.)"

I'm not going to see this...I've already seen the show twice in Seattle.  Both shows were very good, but twice is enough for me. :)

Regarding my murdered co-worker:  This has been extremely tough on my sister who had worked closely with him for the past 20 years.  He was a very sweet and very kind man.

They have already arrested a suspect in the murder.  Morris had spent the last several years working as a counselor for prison inmates about to be paroled.  It is too early to tell if the suspect was one of the men he had been counseling.

Title: Re:DAINTY JUNE
Post by: George on June 01, 2006, 03:33:44 PM

Actually, the tempos don't bother me too much.  To me, there is so much variation in theater music and subsequent recordings that I've gotten used to that kind of change.

Georges in the first act didn't seem to be as obsessive as I though he should sound (well, from what I could hear from the recording).  Of course, I could just be too used to Mandy's version. ::) I enjoyed Dot/Marie, also.

I like the fact that the orchestrations are different...at all.  I have a studio cast recording of A Little Night Music with Sian Phillips as Desiree (who went on to play Madame Armfelt with Judi Dench as Desiree) that has a string quintet (I think) as the orchestra and it's beautiful.

I also love the fact that so much of the music is included, but I like all the dialogue.  I like getting a sense of the show, not just the songs.

Re houses exploding... Many years ago, in Toronto, late one night I was lying in bed discussing the fragility of life with my husband. (I swear!) And suddenly, the house next-door exploded. Good timing!
We ran outside, as did the woman who was renting the house. She'd been in the shower and was only wearing a towel. Thought I'd share...

As for Tony night, even though I'm on the left coast, I'll be watching a live feed at an Actors Fund  Benefit Tony Party. Should be fun.

SPELLING BEE SPOILER

.
.
.

Okay first I had no idea that there were Canadians in the competition. I was very impressed with the girl from Edmonton (finola?).  And I was rooting for her to win.

I only watched the last 45 minutes. BUt it was quite exciting. And yes some of the words were VERY hard.

I missed when the brunette got back in (but they mentioned it in her interview).

I could not believe how fast those last two girls were spelling their words. Amazing.  Of the last 15 words. There were only a handful that I knew how to spell.

DR Jose, re: SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE.  I'm not really that fond of this stage of the competition. I prefer watching them learn all the dances (i guess this year in vegas). And I love watching them draw pairings and dance styles.  I much prefer the couples dancing to when they each dance on their own.

Speaking of musicals, I watched the second disc in the BROADWAY: THE AMERICAN MUSICAL box tonight. I started with the fourth program dealing with the Golden Age and when it finished, I went back to the depression years (part three). ENjoyed seeing this again.

Then, I watched the four back-to-back episodes of THE OFFICE. Each one had hilarious and treasurable moments.

Today, the Television Critics Association made their anual nominations in the various categories, and THE OFFICE was the ONLY comedy nominated for Program of the Year. The other four nominees were all dramas: LOST, THE SOPRANOS, 24, and GREY'S ANATOMY.

Then I watched tonight's CSI episode, a rerun once again featuring Lady Heather. The show is/was the grisliest hour of CSI I've even seen, and I had to turn my eyes away from the screen on several occasions. I didn't remember how it ended so I stuck with it to the bitter end, but this is definitely one episode I won't be revisiting ever again. I'm thinking I must have been busy with something when it first aired because I remembered the general premise without remembering any of these horrendous details.

Then I started watching SOUNDER which I recorded off TCM the other day. Unless a new DVD has been issued of which I'm unaware, this film has always been pan and scanned on tape and DVD. This seems to be the only way to see it in its widescreen glory (it's Panavision). Will finish up with it tomorrow.

I just finished watching Ozu's Good Morning, about which more later.  Will now start Whatever Happened To Baby Jane and I shall consciously avoid "terrific television" - the Tonys, however, I'll watch, but right here at haineshisway.com.  Don't need no stinking Actor's Fund gala to go hobnob in, when we have the smartest partay people in town.

Well, unfortunately, the Brantley review of MAME was not a "move this show to New York" kind of review, but that gives even more reason for the New Yorkers to get to DC to see the show, if that makes any sense.
Title: Re:DAINTY JUNE
Post by: FJL on June 01, 2006, 09:41:34 PM
I'm surprised that a show estimated to cost $5-million opted to open itself to the critics after only three preview performances, since the critics were apparently there Wed. evening, at the fourth preview if I'm counting correctly.

Tried to expand my stay at the Watergate on June 23rd to 24th an extra day, to take into account seeing ASSASSINS at the Signature near D.C. on the 24th evening, and found that the room that's $149 on the 23rd zooms up to $289 on the 24th.
Title: Re:DAINTY JUNE
Post by: FJL on June 01, 2006, 09:46:16 PM
There must be soemthing going on in D.C. starting on June 24th evening, since the guy on the phone was a little surprised that the rate would go up for the weekend from Friday to Saturday.
Title: Re:DAINTY JUNE
Post by: FJL on June 01, 2006, 09:48:37 PM
One of our group found a reasonable rate at a hotel five blocks from the Watergate, though.  Probably not as nice a hotel, but it runs $179, which seems reasonable for D.C. on a weekend.
Title: Re:DAINTY JUNE
Post by: FJL on June 01, 2006, 09:51:32 PM
So we could conceivably stay at the Watergate Friday night, bring our bags over to the other hotel before seeing MAME, say hello to the people in MAME that we want to say hello to, then go the second hotel and check in before heading out to Arlington for ASSASSINS.

It's the Kennedy Center.  Most shows there have very short preview periods, which I'm guessing is a result of all the touring shows that come through there.  Most of the tours get one or two "previews" before the reviews come out.

I'm also guessing that since it's a limited five and a half week run, they wanted to have the show officially open for a good chunk of that time.
Title: Re:DAINTY JUNE

Or if we find out there's a "baggage check" at the Kennedy Center, we could bring our bags there, and then carry them over to the Doubletree after the show.

I'd go ahead and ask to speak to a manager/supervisor to see if they could work out a better rate for you for your final night.

*And hotel rates in DC usually tend to go up on the weekends during the summer due to the number of tourists coming into town.

There's no bag check at the Kennedy Center...  Well, maybe if you tip the Coat Check clerk "nicely"...  Or, if you have friends in the show, just ask them to hold it backstage for you.  -I've done that before.

*Actually, the Watergate should be able to hold your bags for you at the Front Desk.

*And...  Oohh... The Doubletree!... Warm Chocolate Chip Cookies!  And, apparently, they now offer other varieties of cookies if you ask.  ;)

We had reviewers in very early during the Sondheim Celebration since each show only ran 14-18 performances.  I think some were even there at the first performance of some of the shows in the series.

What was interesting (to me, anyway :)  ) was that the reservationist at the Watergate said something to the effcet that they're generally a weekday-oriented hotel so they usually have deals on the weekend (and in fact, we got a great deal for the Friday night, which we booked a while ago before we decided to add seeing ASSASSINS to the trip).  He was surprised that it went up so much from Friday to Saturday.

Here is what I've eaten today - one Stanley's Chinese Chicken Salad with extra dressing.  One piece of bread and butter, and a couple of small chocolate chip cookies (the package had 180 calories, which is squat).  So, the question is, do I want to eat anything else.  Getting a little late, but I don't want my body to go into starvation mode - that would not be useful.

I've been tracking down the reviews for Mame at the Kennedy Center, and they all seem to be saying the same thing.  Hmm...

*At least Peter Marks in The Washington Post - formerly on the New York Times - acknowledged that he caught the show "early" in the performance run, and that Ms. Baranski would need more time to settle into the role.

YES!  -And for some of the other hotels in that "brand"...

And, technically, you're supposed to pay for any and all cookies after the first one - which you receive upon check-in, but if you smile and are nice, you can usually procure another one... or two.

*One of the Managers from the Doubletree at Times Square wold hang out at the stage door of The Palace talking with our doorwoman.  Sometimes she would have a bag of "extras".. YUM!

I have some kind of a Sony. But I don't recommend it. The lens is too sensitive. The lens has burn marks on it from taking outside photos.

The lens probably wouldn't have burn marks if your daytime temperatures didn't reach 160 degrees!

For the past couple of days my weatherbug has been flashing. It is warning me that daytime temps will be 110+. Hello! That's normal this time of year!

And just to clarify for our resident potty mind,; I was talking about the temperature of Arizona, not Dear Reader Laura.

I like the word "terrific" and use it quite often, just never in conjunction with "television."  Oh, and because some people just don't seem to get my sense of HUMOR, here

 ;D ::) ;)

Which may explain why there are so many songs about rainbows.  The writers wish to terrify us.

It's weird - under stats we show that we've had 461 posts, which would make this the tenth highest posting day ever.  But here, it only shows as 450 something posts.
