Title: OHAYO
Post by: bk on June 02, 2006, 12:20:18 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you will now say ohayo to whomever you see, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently in Ohio saying ohayo.

DVD:  "Acorn Antiques - the musical".  Funniest stage show I've seen on DVD for many a year. (Julie Walters is wonderful).

CDs:  Del Shannon "Rock On"
          Linda Ronstadt "Hummin' to Myself"
          Pet Shop Boys "Fundamental"

Various Episodes from Season 2 of Bewitched.
The Night Larry Kramer Kissed Me.

Season 2 of Bewitched had wonderful performances by Alice Pearce who won an Emmy, Marion Lorne as Aunt Clara, Paul Lynde in his first performance as Uncle Arthur, the first appearance of Serena (but not quite the Serena of later appearances.) The writing was quite good with episodes being funny and touching at the same time. Dick York and Elizabeth Montgomery giving top notch performances.

There were two episodes that were virtually lifted from season one. Each had a new scene at the beginning that said Do you remember what happened last year and the older episode is then played out again. There is no wrap around scene. It was probably a cost saving device since there were 38 episodes that year!

Der Brucer is away this morning, quite early.  He is off to join the third graders where young Alex goes to school, as they all take a field trip to Philadelphia to see a musical play called The Stinky Cheese Man. (http://www.ardentheatre.org/2006/stinky.html)  They should all have a very good time, I believe.

I was also asked to join the third graders on this trip, but my work schedule got in the way.  (Or, considering the show's title, the whey.)  Still, it's nice to know that the school considers me to be one of the parents, or something like one.

I'm still reading the same books I was reading last week.  Such is the free time I have.

Der Brucer purchased and watched the DVD of a filmed entertainment called The Towering Inferno.  He quite enjoyed it.

SPOILER:

For those who don't remember, The Towering Inferno is the film where O. J. Simpson saves a kitty cat.

Good morning all!

Judging from the posts from the other day, I wasn’t the only person having problems with connecting with the board.

I actually got scared when I got the “Forbidden” page because I was on lunch at the time and thought that I had somehow connected to the server at work.  We can get in BIG trouble if we use the county  resources to surf the net.  I shut everything down quickly.

I couldn’t figure out how I had connected since I have the card I bought from Verizon configured to only pick up the signal that I’m paying for.  Mystery solved.  Thank goodness.

I tried again on the bus ride home but still couldn’t connect to the board and kept getting thrown off.  I guess it was just a bad day.

I drove into work yesterday so I didn't have my laptop with me.  I had to go for the yearly mammogram.  Ugh.  But not as painful has it has been in the past.  I still manage to get somewhat sick in the stomach the day after.  I think I must be sensitive to the radiation.

Anyway, Happy Friday everyone and have a wonderful day!

Laura, what a great Squirrel picture from yesterday!

I will look for Peter Mark's review of Mame. I read Brantley's review this morning.

I'm listening to WMKV right now. I forgot to bring CDs to the office with me so my musical experiences will be from Internet radio.

I have episodes of The Sopranos to watch, courtesy of Anthony's mother. I will watch them as I ride the bike which I needs must do after my wonderful trip to DC last weekend.

I will also go to the Doggie Spa and play with my friend's dog, Homer. My friend is in the middle of the Gobi desert with another friend (it's her 60th birthday present to herself, a trip to Tibet). He called because he looked at his phone (he has T-Mobile service) and saw there was coverage. Imagine being in the middle of the Gobi Desert and making a cell phone call!

Tomorrow I will go to the Broadhurst Theatre ticket office and try to procure standing room tickets for the matinee or evening performance of History Boys.

On Sunday morning I will call my sister in Minnesota. Her husband works at a golf course and leaves the house early on Sunday so we can have a nice long talk without interruption.

I now must look up some things on line for Anthony (who is doing fine, btw, in Virginia).

Adieu.

Unfortunately, DR DtM - Elsa Schrader has connections only in Vienna and NOT in Berlin.  But she does have the finest cotourier in Vienna and she does give some rather gay parties....  But for Georg - it's just NOT enough.

I personally think it's all of the ugly clothes that Eleanor Parker wore in THE SOUND OF MUSIC that sealed her fate.

Good morning, all!  I had quite a profitable afternoon at the NYPL Theatre Collection yesterday.  Beyond seeing and visiting with favorite librarians, I found many interesting discrepancies between the original Anne Caldwell-James O'Dea lyric sheets for unpublished songs at the library and their "edited" versions recorded by someone with a highly promoted reputation as a musical theatre historian.

Today, I'm back to Toyland for edits and other bits of fun with Mr Tom Murray.  When I return hme, I have some proofreading on a new vocal score to Jerome Moross' one-act opera SORRY WRONG NUMBER.  This evening I shall chill out with some DVD viewing.  Dylan and his new girlfriend (the boy works fast!) are off to a party, and I look forward to a quiet evening.

Last night I began Luke Yankee's memoir of his mother, the late great Eileen Heckart, and it's hard to put down:  the anecdotes are wonderful, some quite funny.  The overall tone of the book is so generous and loving to family and friends that it's a pleasure to know about another down-to-earth, sensible family in show business

Sad to see that the Lamb's Theater has lost its lovely space on West 44th Street.  Saw quite a few fine shows there and thought it was a most hospitable space, especially (but not only) if you sat in the center section.  It was a pain to get up those s tairs, but once you were there, it was well worth it.

We seem to be embracing some weather extremes here.  It's either too cool for anything less than long-sleeved shirts, or it's too warm to breathe (when it gets warm like that, air flow is reversed with air blowing westward from interior climes, mostly from very hot areas).  One can feel the breath being sucked from one's lungs sometimes.

Thank goodness for Air Conditioning.

Reiterating that it was the cup of coffee that was doing the languishing, I have to opine that it started when I set the cup on my desk and removed the lid.

The profuse steam that escaped at the point led me to speculate that I wasn't yet ready to scald my tongue or the roof of my mouth...and I decided it needed to languish a bit.

Well... I got up early, around 8:30 in fact! - and then proceeded to fall back asleep until 11:30...  Then turned on the TV...

*It's always "fun" watching Martha Stewart when she has a guest - chefs, in particular - who is more confident in their cooking skills than she is.  She just tries and tries to inject her own knowledge without really contributing to the segment.  "Oooh, I would just love to have that for dinner," is one of her usual rejoinders.

Academy, my downfall!

Since my husband is off in Virginia the call of the siren is easier to answer at lunch  ;)

I picked up a copy of the soundtrack to Mrs. Santa Claus, the Jerry Herman/Angela Lansbury television special from 1996. I also got a copy of Magdalena. I don't know if it's any good. I've heard of the show. It's by Wright and Forrest who wrote Kismet and Grand Hotel. This recording has the wonderful Judy Kaye, George Rose, Faith Esham, Kevin Gray and Jerry Hadley. I will listen to it over the weekend.

Did I mention that I will try to get standing room tickets to History Boys tomorrow?

I am reading The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen. It's old, I know, but it was in the library and I've never read it so now I will. It was highly praised when it came out but right now it's a lot of family dysfunction. We will see how it goes. I keep looking  for The Kite Runner but all copies are out at my branch. I may wander over to another branch of the NYPL to see if I can find a copy.

For those of you who did buy or are going to buy Season 1 of Boston Legal, I don't know if this is everywhere but down here in Florida, if you buy it at Best Buy, you get a two disk bonus of the shows that set BL up.

I think it's another show called, The Practice?  I'm not sure.  I just know that the box said it is the show that introduced the Alan charactor.

Anyway, that's the set that I bought.

Boston Legal is a spin-off of The Practice. David E. Kelley created The Practice and it was pretty successful but it started slipping in the ratings. He came up with Boston Legal after introducing Alan Shore in the last season of The Practice.

Back from lunch.

What a gorgeous day!

A co-worker and I walked 14 blocks to visit the weekly farmer's market (bought two pounds of fresh green beans) and take lunch at a Thai restaurant.

Had wonderful chicken spring rolls and pra-ram pork.

Delicious!

And the walk was enervating!

Topic of the Day:

In my CD player:  several CDs through very kind courtesy of DR Rodzinski!  Thank you very much!! :-* Also, the new (and only) London cast recording of Sunday in the Park With George.

In my DVD player:  three new DVDs from Netflix (they're at home, so I don't remember what they are), after that will be "Transamerica" with Felicity Huffman.

In my VCR:  tapes to tape shows tonight.  There are three shows at 9:00 pm, so I have to tape two of them.  I'll watch "Last Comic Standing" and tape "Doctor Who" and today's "Oprah" episode rebroadcast this evening.

It was really getting hot when I got in from my errands. Fortunately, we had a thunderstorm come through that plunged temperatures by at least 10 degrees. When that started, I threw open the windows and doors, cut on the attic fan, and put some cool back into the house. Now, I should be able to keep the A/C off for another day.

Then, I put in TAKEN AT THE FLOOD, another of the A&E Hercule Poirot mysteries which I hadn't watched before. Excellent mystery with a great surprise ending that Mrs. Christie was so wonderful in springing on us.

Because these are the most recent Poirot adventures which have been produced, they look and sound much more impressive than the earlier ones, at least on video.  And it's great watching them straight through without bothersome commercials dragging them out to 2 hour lengths. They're a very compact 90 minutes now.

Then, I put in MOMMIE DEAREST. This is the first DVD issue, not the most recent release. Except for a couple of overly grainy scenes, this DVD looks fine, and I have no intention of double dipping on this release.

However, I've only gotten through to the "wire hanger/blue bathroom" scene. I'll finish the film later.

Oh.. And td, this is for you!

This pic was taken at our Closing Night gathering this past Sunday.  Jim Stanek had been out the day before for both shows attending to the birth of his new son, Dylan Jay.

*So, due to Hugh being out sick, that meant we had three understudies on for the both shows on Saturday: Drew Sarich went on as Lestat (normally played by Hugh Panaro), Sean MacLaughlin went on as Armand (normally played by Drew Sarich), and Chris Peluso went on as Louis (normally played by Jim Stanek).

**And the night before, Drew and Sean ended up going on just for the second act of the show.  So, that meant that Drew ended up playing "against" his character in the same performance.

-Needless to say, it was quite the action-packed closing weekend.

Jose, what swell pix - thanks for sharing them! Oh, how I miss NYC sometimes!

It was Not Raining for 2 hours this morning - so I was out there ripping up buttercups with a will! Yipes, with all the rain and long days, everything is growing so fast - especially these buttercups! They have taken over the whole yard... amazing what I find in there, once the weeds are out.

Rain for the rest of the day, I think - I'm going to lie on the couch and watch Alfie - the Jude Law one... then maybe next week or so I'll try to find the Michael Caine Alfie, which I saw decades ago.

And, in honor of Ohayo - music today is Japanese sakura music.

Of course, I'd still like to lose another ten pounds before I would allow any photographs, but perhaps I'll take a non-erotic photograph just to show my progress.  In Deceit, we had to take a photo used on the set of Tammy lying in a bikini and me, in swim trunks sitting next to her and looking on.  My gut is ridiculous in that photo and my boobs are almost as big as Miss Minoff's.  That, happily, is no longer the case.  My extra boobage has completely disappeared, and so has the gut.

Did I mention that we have not had rain in such a very long time but guess what we had yesterday when I had to drive all the way to Plant City?

You guessed it.  Rain!  Buckets of the stuff.   I could barely see to drive.  I have to admit that my fear of driving in rain wasn't as great since I felt more secure in Bonny.   :)

I think I've been doing this work too long.  :)

DR TPunk - another book (not new) that I saw listed today was titled Wellness for Helping Professionals.  I thought there are several of us on the site who might be able to use that!

I cannot put this book down!

DR Elmore - may I borrow it when you're finished?  My library appears not to have ordered it.  Don't get me started...

Well, Alfie was just so depressing - very stylish movie - done up to suggest the 60's, in a way. Jude Law is so good in it. But egad! I had forgotten what a depressing story it is...

That, and the heavy downpour... well, I need something like IceCream!!! to cheer me up... and it came in the form of a terrific lyric by Bruce K - for the expanded Thighs. I laughed out loud.

Well, i think I'll go rummage in the refrigerator for some grub... back laters, gators!

one other thing I'm thinking about doing is putting out the original director's cut of The Creature Wasn't Nice, along with its bastardized theatrical version.  We shall see.

I, and a couple of other DRs as well as one of my co-workers would all go for that idea, BK!!

Of course you and Cindy must do commentary.

I finshed MOMMIE DEAREST, and the rest of the DVD looked sharp and well done. I have no complaints with it, so I'm glad I'm not rebuying the new edition, even though it is reasonably priced.

Next, I put in I LOVE MELVIN. Such a zippy, unpretentious little musical. Always enjoy it though on the bigger screen it's pretty obvious that the film is in dire need of some Technicolor restoration. Doesn't have nearly the richness of color that LOVELY TO LOOK AT has.

Then, I watched the first episode in THE SIX WIVES OF HENRY VIII - Catherine of Aragon, which has always been my favorite of the six episodes. Annette Crosbie gives a riveting performance as the noble queen. Keith Michell, of course, won an Emmy for playing Henry VIII, though he won it for the fifth episode Catherine Howard rather than this first one.

Having enjoyed that, I put on the second episode in the series - Anne Bolyn. Dorothy Tutin is great as the tragic, foolish Anne. I didn't get quite to the end of this one so I'll finish it tomorrow.

George - you never know.  We'll have to see how these first two sell - one other thing I'm thinking about doing is putting out the original director's cut of The Creature Wasn't Nice, along with its bastardized theatrical version.  We shall see.

Yes, you must!!! There are things in the original cut that are very funny. Obviously, I'm not as close to it, so I enjoyed the bastardized version as well (or else I would never have shown up on this here site), but both should be seen.

And think of the commentary track for that. You oughta track down Gerrit Graham.

Not to be confused with dance of THE HOURS, where you dance around in a big prosthetic nose.

I just finished watching "Doctor Who."  I didn't realize that next week is the season finale!  At least it won't be too long before this new series will be available on DVD (it'll be released on July 4th).  I thought about getting it from amazon.co.uk (since I have a region-code free DVD player), but it would cost a lot more than what it'll be on amazon.com.
