Well, you've read the notes, the notes were wise and sage, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - I'm told that tonight's the night for sure.

Good morning, all!  I hope today is a more peaceful one for all of us.  I have a morning with some Herbert edits, and then it's anybody's guess.

DR MBarnum, that's a mighty shiney face in that new avatar!

Good Morning Fred and Larry!

Just popped in to see what's going on before I go back to the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation.

It's drizzling here in NYC. I saw on the weather today that DR Laura may have temperatures as high as 105. Ugh. I don't care if it's a dry heat. Hell is Hell  ;)

No offense Laura  ;D

Hey today on the TODAY SHOW (NBC) at 8:15am- 8:20am there is a segment called "breaking up with your friend". I did not see it, but saw the heading up on the screen (it was concluding at 8:25am).

Good Morning!

Well, at this point and time in New York City - Uptown/West Harlem and 8:56am - it is now raining.  However, it might still be drizzling down in Chelsea where DR Ben is located. Ah, well...

bk - Methinks you need a good old-fashioned trip to the grocery store to stock your cupboard and fridge so that you don't have to make a nightly trip out for whatever you may end up eating for dinner.  -And, remember, never go to the grocery store when you're hungry, or you may end up putting "stuff" in your cart that you shouldn't put in there (right now, at least).  A list is a good idea.

I had a strange dream last night.

It sort of hinged upon the Disney Princesses, but had to do with their princes.

They were thinking of forming an a capella quartet.  Beast was the obvious choice for singing base.  Ariel's Eric bowed out, since he's a flute player, not a singer.  Snow White's Prince was the obvious high tenor.  But then the arguing started.  Cinderella's Charming, Aurora's Phillip, and Jasmine's Aladdin couldn't work out among themselves which were the best choices for being in the quartet, and who would sing what parts.  They couldn't agree to try being a quintet.

Sad, how things get ugly.  Whoda thunk this group would have testosterone problems.

So, esteemed BK, what do you think of a capella groups?  Impressed, take a pass, middling to so-so?

I have to disagree with DR Jose.  Heading to the store on a nightly basis is the best way to make sure you get the freshest veggies, and that you're eating what you truly want to eat.  The trick is to limit yourself to buying what you need for now (with the exception of staples) and not to stock up on junk.  I rarely plan dinner ahead for even a day ahead.  And cook fresh food, not that pre-packaged stuff.

And, whenever I get really sick and tired of my own cooking, that's when I get der Brucer to take me out to dinner.  Which is a good thing to do every once in a while, since there are no distractions and we have very lovely conversations at those times.

I realized after I clicked on the Radio Show that it was last week's and I already heard it. Not that it wasn't worth listening to again but instead I put in my Highlights CD of Unsung Irving Berlin. I do love that last number, If You Haven't Got an Ear for Music. What a good way to get the morning moving. I know it was the theme to the "other" radio show but it's still a great track.

Well...  As long as bk buys fresh veggies each time he goes out to forage for his supper... Instead of In-N-Out, Marie Callendar's, Jerry's Deli, Ghengis Kohen, etc., etc., etc...

Wednesday morning greetings!  Last night, I gave in to the eye drops and went to bed at 9:30.  My eyes are back to normal this morning.

Today is my last work day until next Tuesday.  Tomorrow, my mom and I are driving to Bloomington/Normal, Illinois, to visit my niece Laura in her new condo.  Friday morning, I'm off to Naperville for the Great Lakes Regional Conference of the American Association of University Women, which lasts until Sunday afternoon and where I will meet up with 3 of my friends from our Middletown AAUW branch.  Sunday afternoon, back to Laura's to watch the Tony Awards and take her out Monday morning for a birthday breakfast before Mom and I head back to Ohio.  A restful long weekend?  I think not.

-Otherwise, I tend to be a daily shopper too when it comes to veggies, meat and fish.  However, sometimes what was "fresh" one day is still on the shelf - and still "fresh" - the day after... or the day the after that.  Of course, that all depends on the store and how they stock and re-stock their shelves.

Speaking of California- Rodz and I generally make a trip out there over the week of July 4th.  This year I had been holding off on booking it because I was in the process of interviewing for a job and wanted to see if I was offered the position before committing to travel plans that might be incompatible.  But the interview process lasted over a month, and I have now been waiting an additional 3 1/2 weeks to hear back.  At this point, we should just book the vacation, right?

Good morning!

No rain in sight here. Sad to say, it IS heatying back up alarmingly fast. At this point the last few days, it was still in the 60s here. This morning at this time, it's 76 already with 85 for the high. Well, it IS June, so I guess I can't expect cool nights AND cool days. As long as the nights are cool and some windows can be opened, I'm happy.

I'm up, I'm up.  Very overcast here.  I've never seen the Secret Menu, but none of it is that interesting - too much meat.

The trick to the Deceit sales is for them to remain brisk, so today will be interesting in that regard.  We've had two orders already.

Well, I certainly keep the pantry stocked with canned fruit, granola bars, and keep some frozen yogurt and/or low fat ice cream in the freezer for those times when I need something to tide me over until the next day's meals.

Once I settle in for the evening, I really don't like to go back out unless it's absolutely necessary.

I have the rest of GIVE A GIRL A BREAK to watch today. I won't be getting my Ebay-acquired laserdiscs for asveral days, so I'll go back to the shelves for other things to watch.

I haven't seen OLD ACQUAINTANCE in awhile, but it's not one of my favorite Bette Davis movies, and it's too long. But maybe I'll go ahead and watch it to get it out of the way. I'm not in a mood for BABY JANE, but I guess I could watch the features on the second disc instead. That's a thought.

...Of course, that all depends on the store and how they stock and re-stock their shelves.
OK, I've got the advantage, working at the store.  I can see what is being restocked, and if I haven't actually been watching what's going on, I can ask Jack or Michael or Larry in produce, or Bill and Gregory over in the meat department.  (I'd ask Albert in meats, but for a department head he doesn't seem to know as much as the other guys.  He didn't even know what the word charcuterie (http://www.yourdictionary.com/ahd/c/c0247700.html) means, which I'd have thought he would have known.)

Which give a tip to everyone else: get to know the staff at your store.  Ask questions, get their advice.  Trust me, staff people love being treated like real people who know their stuff.

There was an a capella group that used to sing on one of the Vixter's kids shows some years ago, I cannot think of their name now, but the show was "Where in the World is Carmen Santiago?'

(It was on PBS and taught kids about geography)  I understand they went on to be very successful in Japan and moderately so here.... what IS their name!?

I am loath to admit that I have dipped my toes into the eBay morass and won some auctions I simply could NOT avoid participating in.

Among my booty over the past two weeks:

Linenbacked one-sheets for "Spartacus" (this was a special poster showing an ancient map of Italy), and "Becket".  Additionaly, I've won 14 different 11 X 14 lobby photos from "Patton", six lobby cards, including the all-important "title card", from "Raintree County", and five 11 X 14 lobby photos from "The Empire Strikes Back."

I'm begging the vendor to please stop...cease and desist...but my fingers continue to do the walking through eBay and the vendor continues offering treasures.

Another purchase I made was "A Donny Hathaway Collection"...primarily because I loved his music way back when, but also because Elliott Yamin renewed my interest in Hathaway.

To that end, I did a little search and found -- on Wikipedia bio of Yamin -- the following notation about Elliott's performance of "A Song For You":

"In the hours following the American Idol broadcast, "A Donny Hathaway Collection" made a huge jump and reached number twenty-three on the Amazon.com bestseller list, a bellwether for music sales. Yamin had commented that he had wanted to return the "spotlight" to Hathaway, and it appears he did just that. His performance of "A Song for You" also began to receive enough airplay to warrant low-level inclusion on some radio media charts."

Also in that Wikipedia bio was the following bit of information that totally blew me away:

"Although Yamin was no longer in the competition, he returned for the finale to sing "One" (in a duet with Blige) and "A House is Not a Home" (during a medley of Burt Bacharach songs). Both performances were well-loved by critics, who agreed they were the best of the night. On television, Randy Jackson was noted as saying that Elliott's version of "A House Is Not A Home" blew away the judges at the finale. "

At the moment she has been listening to Celtic Women,  Little Women Beauty and the Beast (Broadway cast recording) and Phantom of the Opera while daily questioning the estimated delivery of "her" Man of LaMancha  and Lestat  cast recordings (since the latter two have yet to be ordered the response is "eventually")

At the moment she has been listening to ... Beauty and the Beast (Broadway cast recording)  while daily questioning the estimated delivery of "her" Man of LaMancha  and Lestat  cast recordings (since the latter two have yet to be ordered the response is "eventually")

I guess she knows that Anthony is in B&TB and he begins previews tonight. They officially open Friday, June 9 after two previews (today and tomorrow) and he has to do two shows on his birthday, Saturday, June 10.

SWoody had  a question for BK right there.

And my question for SWoody is, did you actually dream in cartoon? Or were the princesses cartoons in a real world?

If I never went to the grocery store when I was hungry, I would never see the inside of a Safeway, Albertson's, or even a 7-11.

I am doing okay.  I am pretending I am retired and am too broke to leave my dingy apartment.  So far, it seems to be working.  However, I have noticed that I spend a lot of time at the front window yelling at those little brats who keep riding their bikes on the sidewalks.  I have also found myself boring my neighbors with stories of when I was a boy and had to walk three miles to school in the snow, uphill (each way).

Other than that I seem to be fine.

WASHINGTON - The Senate on Wednesday rejected a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage, dealing a defeat to President Bush and Republicans who hope to use the measure to energize conservative voters on Election Day.

Supporters knew they wouldn’t achieve the two-thirds vote needed to approve a constitutional amendment, but they had predicted a majority of votes. Instead, they fell one short, 49-48.

That was one vote more than they got last time the Senate voted on the matter, in 2004. Later that year, Republicans gained four seats in the Senate.

“We were hoping to get over 50 percent, but that didn’t happen today,” said Sen. David Vitter, R-La., one of the amendment’s supporters. “Eventually, Congress is going to have to catch up to the wisdom of the American people or the American people will change Congress for the better.”

“We’re not going to stop until marriage between a man and a woman is protected,” said Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan.

Am I missing something here? Does giving same sex couples the right to legally marry  also prohibit "mixed sex" couples from marrying?

I am not sure how allowing two people to legalize their loving relationship and commitment to one another  has ANY impact on my relationship with my husband

In fact, doesn't the fact that they want to marry in some way validate the commitment we have made?

I can understand not requiring houses of worship from conducting ceremonies which are incompatible with their teachings, but why do we keep trying to impose religious views on a non-religous government?

Perhaps the Muslim- Americans and the Jewish-Americans should try and impose a nationwide ban on pork products.

I cannot understand why an adminstration with so little concern as to the state of the economy, global warming, social security, health care, pollution, hunger is so damn interested in what is going on in the beds of its citizens!!!!

Oh, they don't care if we have sex together, as long as we don't try to get hitched.

I agree completely, vixmom.  I have never understood why the religious leaders who oppose gay marriage should have any influence on the laws of our government.  You can't wish someone a Merry Christmas in a government building; but your pastor, priest, or rabbi can forbid you from spending the rest of your life in a committed relationship (i.e.: marraige) that is sanctioned exclusively by the govenment and not by God.

Hmmmmmmm?

I mentioned the titles last night, but it was buried within another post.

Anyway, they were ROSE MARIE (the Ann Blyth-Howard Keel-Fernando Lamas CInemascope version) and the Jane Powell double feature NANCY GOES TO RIO and LUXURY LINER (the latter I have never seen).

In THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT III, Howard Keel said that ROSE MARIE was the first Cinemascope musical, but I think he meant it was MGM's first Cinemascope musical. If my movie research is correct, Doris Day's LUCKY ME at Warner Bros. was actually the first musical filmed in Cinemascope.

I first finished GIVE A GIRL A BREAK this afternoon. It's a small MGM musical (a Jack Cummings production), but it has pleasant numbers which have a fair degree of imagination.

But imagine my surprise when Gower Champion starts singing a song late in the picture, and it's Bill Lee's voice (who sang for John Kerr in SOUTH PACIFIC and Christopher Plummer in THE SOUND OF MUSIC). It's odd because his own singing voice is featured in all of his other songs in the picture. I'd love to know the story behind that decision.

Thanks Vixmom, I have been stewing on this for a few days.  Although I especially enjoyed Jon Stewart's and Stephen Colbert's coverage of this last night.  If the american government is truly concerned about protecting marriage, they would make divorce illegal, or make re-marriage illegal.  Only one time folks so make it count.  Or if they wanted to go broader and really wanted to address the issues that were really and truly impacting and tearing down the institution of marriage, they would address unemployment, wage inequality, the minimum wage, the shipping of jobs oversees, the education crisis, and any number of other issues that this marriage amendment is trying to cover up.  For crying out loud, how is attacking monogamous gay couples going to impact any of the real issues hurting marriage?

Wasn't there a case within the past 10 years ago, one of the southern states (I'm thinking one of the Carolinas) where a sherriff staked out a gay man's house and then burst in in the middle of the night arrested both adult men and successfully prosecuted them for breach of sodomy laws?

Then, I watched some of the special features on the BABY JANE DVD second disc.

There's an overview of the careers of both women; it's a fairly interesting (though surface) comparison of the careers and personal lives of the two ladies. (The Book BETTE AND JOAN: THE DIVINE FEUD by Shaun Considine is able to go into much more detail about them.)

Then there's a VERY valuable documentary and then interview that Joan conducted in ENgland around the time she filmed BERSERK. (In fact, her hairstyle in the picture is the one she's wearing in the interview, and the interviewer is British.) I had never seen this before, and I found it fascinating knowing what we know NOW about Joan Crawford.

Finally, there's the TCM documentary ALL ABOUT BETTE narrated by Jodie Foster which I had seen before but enjoyed seeing again. STARDUST (in the boxed set) is more complete but both are worthwhile overviews of her legendary career.

Had a BBQ Chicken Southwest salad...tasty.

It would be been even tastier had we been able to partake of the special Watermelon Margaritas...but, alas!

Vixmom, you asked what Bollywood movies that the Vixter might enjoy...I have come up with two that she may like (although there are, I am sure, tons of goods ones she would like...).

KOI MIL GAYA is a remake of E.T. It was a huge hit and a sequel is in the works as I type this.

I have not seen the movie, but JRand55 has...he may better be able to tell you how good it is.

Here is a nice description of the movie:

Another Bollywood movie that she might like is PHIR HERA PHERI. This one I have seen and it was a very funny comedy from last year....and also a big hit...and also a sequel is soon to be released....some really nice dance and song numbers.

I don't recall any particularly adult matter in this film...suitable for the whole family, I believe.

DR Laura, did you know there was a haboob south of Phoenix!   LOL, I hadn't heard that term before.  Yes, I'm just sitting here watching the weather channel.

ha·boob n. A penetrating sandstorm or dust storm with violent winds, occurring chiefly in Arabia, North Africa, and India.

I'm kinda hankerin' to watch "The Crusades" by DeMille with Loretta Young.

George Cukor used to tell the story that Loretta Young's acting in this movie was less than wonderful. "You gotta save the world for Christianity; you gotta," she is alleged to say in the film according to Cukor. I've never seen the movie, so I don't know if his story is accurate or not.

Haboob is such a fun word to say. My mom was watching the weather thing on T.V. yesterday and there was a shot of the haboob. I said, "Is that the haboob?" And then the weather girl said, "Here is the haboob."

I guess you had to be there.

LOL, DR Sandra. I love it when the people on TV answer my questions. Doesn't happen very often but when it does it cracks me up.

A couple hours ago the weather channel showed some video and said it was Iowa City, they just showed the same video and said it was Wisconsin. LOL....I guess you're not supposed to keep checking in.  (We may get some storms, so I'm checking the weather - we haven't had rain in about a month so I'm hoping....)

I have very strong convictions that Ann Coulter is the anti-Christ.

She is evil, evil, evil.

I've never heard her say anything that wasn't hateful, hatemongering, hate-filled and meant to severely  impugn the characters of better than half the citizens of the U.S. (or...those that voted for Al Gore...who still LOST the election...SOMEHOW???).

If any woman walked the face of the earth who truly personified the term "evil ....  bitch", it's Ann Coulter.

I have the same regards... If a person is happy with another person, so be it.

My rant:

Okay, what really gets me is when the religious people say that marriage is such a "sacred" institution, but ANY two (different-sexed) people can go into any justice o' the peace, pay their $2 and get married with nary a mention of any religious deity.  It's a completely secular legal contract between two people...and the only one that I know of (not that I've done any research) that specifies a gender.  Why don't non-discrimination-based-on-gender laws kick in??

AND if the religious people TRULY want to make "marriage" a sacred institution, why aren't they fighting their little Christian hearts out to make it illegal for athiests to get married??  Huh??  And if hetero-marriage is so important for the raising of children, why can't gay people who specifically DON'T want children (such as I) be allowed to get married since children aren't in the picture, at all??  OR what about hetero-couples who get married specifically without the intent to have children?  Why is that allowed??

End of rant...thank you. ;)

DR Elmore, I've been feeling the same way all day.  I am especially seething right now at NBC.  They ran a report at the end of the evening news about crossing the line of civility in reference to the psycho bitch's inane comments on yesterday's Today show.  I ask, why does NBC continually give this harpy opportunities to air her hateful messages?  Every time she farts out a book, she makes an appearance on the Today show, usually resulting with the host trying to confront her half-heartedly.  Then, of course, she gets to go on Fox and laugh about how ineffective the liberals on Today (and the media in general) were in trying to bring her down.  Stop giving her a platform!  Let her crank out her junk and let the a-holes who want to seek it out buy it.  But stop giving this hatemonger a wider audience to spread her brand of malevolence.

Good Evening!

Please make the rain stop!

-Of course, the one day this week that I actually had to head out it would be raining continuously.  My jeans ended up getting soaked after just walking the three blocks from James' office to the subway.  And I even had an umbrella with me.  So...

I'm back at my apartment, and just made/had some coffee.  I broke in my new coffee grinder - 1/2 Mexican (caffeinated), 1/2 Colombian (decaf).  Quite tasty.

Other than the rain, it's been a pretty good day.

...The auditions were fun.  And little tiring on the ears.

They had just called a few guys in to read and sing for Gaston in Beauty & The Beast.  Some good singers.  No truly ideal one, but, then again, I'm not the one who has to make the casting decisions.

Then came those tapping feet for 42nd Street.  We saw some very good men this afternoon.  Alas, being in a room filled with 12 tap dancers can be a little "loud".  As the choreographer was teaching the combinations, it was "bad enough" hearing all the non-unison taps... However, as soon as everyone got up to speed...  The sound of 12 heels and toes doing slams all at the same time... WOW!  Made my head hurt after a while.  -The choreographer was also teaching the original Gower Champion choreography - very fast, surprisingly syncopated, LOTS of sound!

Again, it was a good dance call, but I was soooo in need of some quiet after leaving the studio.

A local woman (the Shoreline area of Seattle) was preparing to take her lunch yesterday.  She reached into a bag of grapes from the grocery store and discovered a Black Widow spider sleeping with the grapes.  She got it into a jar and took it to Seattle's Woodland Park where they confimed that it was indeed a Black Widow, and very much alive.  So much for those delicious Chilean grapes.

OH!

And I picked up my ticket for Sunday night's Tony Awards!  I'll be in Row T, Seat 508.  I'll be in the rear of the orchestra section - the seating at Radio City starts with the double-letters (AA, BB, CC, etc.) and then goes to the single letters - but at least I'm not all the way over to the right of the section.

The ticket does request "Black Tie", so I'm going to head out tomorrow and find a tux.  I'll probably end up renting one, but if I find a deal, I may end up buying one.  We shall see.

ASK BK or anyone else

Can an accapella musical be performed on Broadway without having to pay for an non existent orchestra?

The short answer is: Yes.

For the long answer - which is also: Yes - you should be able to find more info at www.local802afm.org.

It rained tonight. In June. DR Cillaliz, having lived in Phoenix, will also be stunned. It does NOT rain in June. Ever.

If this had happened yesterday, I'd have said it was a sign from the devil.

After winning a bunch of items on e-Bay, how many of them do you put on display? and how many of them go into storage?  And/or do you rotate your memorabilia?

-I'm going to look into buying a rental/"used" tux.  If I could splurge on a $800-1000 tux, I would.  But since I can't, and since I don't have to...

Do you think a haboob is the same as a hubbub?

Haboob has an arabic origin [Arabic habb, strong wind, from habba, to rush, blow. See hbb in Semitic Roots.]

and Hubbub has an Irish Gaelic origin

[Probably of Irish Gaelic origin; akin to Scottish Gaelic ubub, an interjection of aversion or contempt.]
Word History: It has often been remarked that the early Celtic inhabitants of Britain contributed very little to the stock of English words. Perhaps this should not surprise us, given the difficult relations over the centuries between the people of Germanic stock and the people of Celtic stock in England and Ireland. It seems likely that a certain English contempt resides in the adoption of the word hubbub from a Celtic source, which is probably related to ub ub ubub, a Scots Gaelic interjection expressing contempt, or to abu, an ancient Irish war cry. In any case, hubbub was first recorded (1555) in the phrase Irish hubbub and meant “the confused shouting of a crowd.” In addition to the senses it has developed, hubbub was again used, possibly in an unflattering way, by the New England colonists as a term for a rambunctious game played by Native Americans.

Thanks to dictionary.com

Don't think there are any alternate pronunciations ;)

DR VIXMOM I second DR MBARNUM's recommendation of KOI...MIL GAYA.

"Rakesh Roshan's Kol Mil Gaya is the story of Rohil Mehra who shows the world tht friendship is truly universal.  Sanjay is a scientist obsessed with establishing contact with extraterrestrial life.  He invents many innovative gadgets till finally he succeeds in creating a coputer that can transmit messages to space.

"His foresight becomes reality when as a response to his signals, a spaceship is sighted in the sky.  But before Sanjay can enjoy his success, his wfie Sonia and he meet with an accident which Sonia survives.

"Sanjay's son Rohit is born, a mentally challenged child who faces ridicule in every phase of his life.  His companion is Nisha whose compassion draws her towards Rohit......"

Of course he finds his late father's computer and brings an extraterrestrial down to earth....all with BOLLYWOOD songs and dances....

Think The Absent Minded Professor mixed with ET and Grease....nearly 3 hours long....it is AN evening of entertainment.

Well... It's probably related to the same "arcane law" that does not allow me to move my own equipment once it is inside the theatre.  Instead, I have to ask the head electrician to have him send someone to the pit to check out the problem... Then most likely wait for someone else to take care of it.  -However, depending on where the equipment has to be moved, then I may have to ask the Props department to do it.

I enjoy it.  However, I don't remember the early rounds being this dramatic and tough last season.  And the judges have been Harsh.  Sometimes too harsh.  My "favorite" comment so far: "Well, I'm here to destroy your dream."  OUCH!

Anne Coulter.  Why do they give her the air time?  I remember when Bill Maher got kicked off ABC for saying something with more truth than many wanted to admit and certainly no where as incendiary.  Anne Coulter and Laura Ingraham are a pair...withered, pinched Republican bimbos whose brains are as anorexic as their bodies.  They must get up from the toilet seat and leave it cold.  That li'l cross around her neck is not going to save her from the bad, bad karma she is creating.
