Well, you've read the notes, the notes had speed and pace, not necessarily in that order, and now it is time for you to post until the speedy cows come home speedily in their Speedos.

Good Morning!

Although it is Friday here in the US of A, it is my Monday.  Yes, I am coming off of my weekend which was spent watching the following things on dvd:
SOUTH PACIFIC IN CONCERT - I love Reba.  What can I say?  I love the natural twang she brings to Nellie, even if it is Oklahoman not Arkansasian.
THE JOHN WAYNE - JOHN FORD COLLECTION's bonus features.  BK, you must tell Mr. Redman how much I enjoyed his contribution to THE SEARCHERS.  The PBS docu ain't too bad, either.
ZODIAC - from Netflix.  A waste of time.  Though David Hess is in it, looking old and haggard.
KUCH NAA KAHU - also from Netflix, but one that I will eventually own.  It's a charming musical with catchy songs and lovely cinematography.
HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL - Kenny Ortega has come a long way since NEWSIES; Alyson Reed has come a long way since the film of A CHORUS LINE and Broadway's MARILYN.

Musically speaking, I've been listening to:
THE PETE SEEGER SESSIONS from Bruce Springsteen
THE DROWSY CHAPERONE - a bit twee, but fun.
SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE -  2006 London recording, at first off-putting because of the accents, but glorious when it gets going.

Hi DR td.

As for the DVD Release announcement made by DRMBARNUM yesterday.

There is nothing like seeing a chimp in a trench coat and fedora and another chimp in a dress and ruffled panties chasing each other through tall flowers in slo mo while a soundtrack plays "Rollin' in the Clover"....Lancelot Link is essential viewing.

TOD:

iPod:  SONG OF SINGAPORE and the Deutsche Grammophon ON THE TOWN, neither of which I've heard before.

Tivo:  All from PBS:  a Sammy Davis Jr clip show,  a documentary on Connie Mack Stadium and Chris Botti (and friends?)

I'm not generally a fan of the concert events that PBS broadcasts these days--I find them to be mostly pablum.  But this Chris Botti concert was quite good--he is an excellent jazz trumpetist and he plays along side a line-up of some wonderful guest vocalists (Gladys Knight, Jill Scott, Sting.)  Give it a shot when it's shown in your area.

I may be getting too absorbed in all the Tony awards race handicapping, or else it was just too early in the morning.  I got my daily entertainment email and could have sworn the headline was MURDOCH BETS ON CHITA, and I thought that's a gutsy move for the Best Actress race.  (Of course, when I read the article, it was actually "Murdoch bets on China.")

Good morning, all!  Welcome back, DRtd.  You've been missed.

I slept late this morning, so I'm rather disorganized at the moment.  I know I have a trip to Toyland to work on piano reductions of dances for The Lady of The Slipper, and then a trip to NYPL that I postponed from yesterday in order to clean the apartment and do laundry.

Dear Friend BK, soaptalk sounds like a perfect venue for Mr Ashford to discuss the new DECEIT DVD.

I like a lot of the ON THE TOWN recording.  Although I think the Bernstein recording with John Reardon, Comden & Green, et al is close to definitive, "Some Other Time" is better on Michael Tilson Thomas' recording since it doesn't have the pitch problems when the singers break into harmony.

Dylan went to his first screening last night:  the new Troma flic POULTRYGEIST.

I came across the following unhappy news at another site a couple of minutes ago.  Brace yourselves for the sadness of it all.

Quote
Please join me in remembering a great icon of the entertainment community. The Pillsbury Doughboy died yesterday of a yeast infection and trauma complications from repeated pokes in the belly. He was 71.

Doughboy was buried in a lightly greased coffin. Dozens of celebrities turned out to pay their respects, including Mrs. Butterworth, Hungry Jack, the California Raisins, Betty Crocker, the Hostess Twinkies, and Captain Crunch. The grave site was piled high with flours.

Aunt Jemima delivered the eulogy and lovingly described Doughboy as a man who never knew how much he was kneaded. Doughboy rose quickly in show business, but his later life was filled with turnovers. He was not considered a very smart cookie, wasting much of his dough on half-baked schemes. Despite being a little flaky at times he still was a crusty old man and was considered a positive roll model for millions.

Doughboy is survived by his wife Play Dough, two children, John Dough and Jane Dough, plus they had a bun in the oven. He is also survived by his elderly father, Pop Tart.

The funeral was held at 3:50 for about 20 minutes.

I also watched So You Think You Can Dance last night.  I"m not crazy about the audition shows (with the bad dancers). But I LOVE the audition phase in Vegas with all the good ones. It's too bad that they didn't show more of the rehearsals. I love watching that.

It is a shame, because some of the chosen 20 were people we had barely seen. And that isn't really fair once the voting begins.

I did find myself getting emotional for a few contestants.  I was sort of sad that the last kid did not get through. And I had tears for the swing guy. That dance he did with his cousin on wednesday (to save himself) was incredible.

I also felt sad that the blonde girl (who was friends with the little kid who made it) did not get through. :(

It will be interesting next week.  I love watching the dancers pair up.

I have already listened through the IDOL CD a couple of times. By far my favorite items are Chris Daughtery's "Wanted: Dead or Alive," Paris Bennett's "Midnight Train to Georgia," Elliott Yamin's "Moody's Mood for Love," and Ace Young's "Father Figure."

Ace's vocal for me was surprisingly the most impressive one as he shows more vocal dexterity than he ever showed on the show. Of course, in the studio, there can be multiple takes to smooth out rough patches, something live TV cruelly exposes, but I really liked this rendition.

Paris' song is so expertly delivered that its being only an audio performance jumps her directly to the forefront of the female vocalists this season. Being 17, her visual performance was always off-putting for me, dolled up in outfits that tried to make her far more mature than she was. But just listening to her, her voice is incredibly mature and impressive. You'd never guess she was 17 hearing this.

Elliott's sophistication in his vocal delivery left everyone else in the dust. I will eagerly buy his first solo CD.

Tuc Watkins - my dream man.

I ran into him at the Post Office about 3 weeks ago; he's quite a nice gentleman.  Of course, it helped that I had worked with Catherine Hickland so we had someone in common to talk about.

Not for those of us who hate REilly's writing. It was a way to avoid watching it. There is a person who posts a synopsis of the show... That was my way of finding out WHEN Matt would air.. Mind you it was not often under REilly.

I just got home from "A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION" - the movie - and thoroughly enjoyed it.   It's not the greatest film in the world, but if you're a PHC fan, I think you'll really love it. It's cute and lovable. And the cast is great with Lily Tomlin, Meryl Streep, John C. Reilly, Woody Harrelson, Tommy Lee Jones, Lindsay Lohan, Garrison Keeler (of course) and more.

I like Catherine Hickland, too, but they've made her character a recurring one on ONE LIFE TO LIVE for awhile, and that's a shame. Again, these really talented people get relegated to the background or side stories in favor of some others who aren't nearly as good. Tuc, thankfully, does have a really good storyline cooking now, so his place on the show should be secure for awhile.

Matthew Metzger, who was a favorite of mine when he was on the show, was written off a couple of weeks ago. Again, his ouster baffled me.

Really funny about PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION. One of our movie critics here in town gave it four stars, his highest rating. The other gave it 2 1/2 stars and said it was barely passable. Funny how opinions can vary so widely, but, of course, we've seen that happen here as well.

I watched the end of OLD ACQUAINTANCE. The last half of the film transfer is much better than the first half.

I still don't think this film is among Davis' better efforts even though it was popular at the time of its release. I'd rather THE GREAT LIE or THE CORN IS GREEN have been chosen for this set.

Finally, I started EVERYBODY SING on laserdisc. This was one of Judy Garland's pre-OZ features, and though the talent is A-list (Allan Jones, Fanny Brice, Billie Burke, Reginald Gardiner, Monty Wooley), it's definitely an MGM programmer. I'd only seen this once before, and it's in a laserdisc package with LITTLE NELLIE KELLY which I've watched multiple times.

They're trying for a screwball family vibe, similar to YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU, but most of it doesn't approach the quality of that classic. Judy's songs, of course, raise the level of everything else on display.

That is an interesting question! But hard (for me) to answer...I would have to hear her sing in the current popular style since her style of singing would have been more in tune with the era(s) in which she were singing at the time...I would be curious to hear her voice singing one of today's hits in today's style.

It's most likely a contractual thing.

In the first season of "Buffy, the Vampire Slayer", David Boreanaz did not get opening credits recognition...rather, he was listed along with the guest stars of each episode.

It's because his being hired came after all the "star-credits-before-the-show-really-starts" negotiations had been made.  For Season 2, he was quite prominent.

I've recently acquired the Cary Grant Box Collection.

I'm disappointed.

Not in the DVDs.

But in the packaging.

These are all individual movie titles, but they are not in individual keep cases.  The entire box is a foldout and the five movies in the set are all meant to be kept in the foldout sections.

This is most annoying.  The Cary Grant Signature Collection is full of individual DVDs that lend themselves to filing alphabetically.

Now...I have to pull out the box to see one of the five titles therein.

I think it's a fine way to present a single season of a TV show...but a crap way to present five films by someone the stature of Grant.

It sux, I tells ya....it sux!

It is a mixed bag... she is okay but I dont think she is that strong of an actress.  Some people like her on the different boards and some dont. She is the third actress to play her in three years. Kirsten Storms {now Maxie on GH} was the first one to play Belle as a teen. She left in 03 and some soft core porn star named Charity Rahmer played her then Martha Madison took over.

I do not really watch her scenes so I can judge for I have not seen a complete episode of Days in three years since JER started writing. She is not bad but the writing does not help her at all. DR Elmoore knows how bad the writer is Passions and soon to be former Headwriter for Days.

I preferred watching the days Matt and Missy were on. I did not care for the writing and I could not watch.

Matthew, the writing stinks....

I prefer the first the Philip played by Jay Kenneth Johnson. He had some talent... Kyle Brandt creeps me out... I hate that story line.... I tend to fast forward it...

IMHO, the character of Belle is a bratty, whiney spoiled princess.

I do have to say, Reilly's writing talents do not help matters either... I cant wait until July... He will be gone!

Tara was played by Karen Lynn Gorney ....  Tara Martin Tyler Brent Jefferson #1 (1970-1974, 1976-1977, 1995) (original cast)

Philip was played by  Richard Hatch http://us.imdb.com/name/nm0368745/

Jordan Charney played the role temporarily in 1976

Philip, Jr. was played by Ian Washam from 1970 to 1976

I was in Shopko and had a box of pink hair dye in my hand (still not sure I've got the guts to do it, but I was looking) when who should come up and pat me on the back but the judge I appear before  most often. He said he hoped everything was going well for me and I said "I think I'll dye my hair pink, what do you think? Pink or fushia?"    LOL, he had the funniest look on his face, I said everything was going well and thanks for asking. But with my "worst haircut ever" My old funky black glasses, while my newer ones get new lenses, and pink hair dye in my hand, I would love to hear what he tells the people at the court house.

I want to see the Prairie Home Companion movie as well.  We have been listening to his Saturday night shows here for the last 20 years....

We have a whole bunch of his Lake Woebegon storiesd in a Cassette tape set we bought about 18 years ago.  It's still a favorite companion on long trips

We keep meaning to try and catch his show live at City Hall in NYC but we always find out too late that he's playing there (ie the show is being broadcast)  We really must get on an email list for the show!

Speaking of dancing... the Vixter and I just came back from her Dance Recital Dress rehearsal

Some of those girls are very talented, some are nearly painful to watch, but you must admire their determination... and the little ones (3, 4 & 5 years old)  are absolutely adorable!!

Hey Jane!!!  I was just wondering how you were!

I just found your last email which inexplicably ended up in my SPAM folder which I don't understand as none of your other ones had.  I must have hit a wrong button while cleaning out junk...

Here's a link for his upcoming shows   http://prairiehome.publicradio.org/programs/schedule/    I'm sure there's probably a link for  an email alert of some sort. It's really fun to see live.  I'd like to go to the Fitzgerald to see it, I just haven't gotten there yet

Thankyou for that link.  No shows close enough to make it possible to go listed at the moment.  Hopefully some NY shows will show up.

Sometimes it is to the actor's advantage to receive guest star billing.  I remember that Heather Locklear never got listed as a series regular on Melrose Place.  She earned more as a guest star.

DR Vixmom: I hope you get the phone call soon, and that you get the news you want to hear.

A very busy video afternoon and evening here. First up was the conclusion of EVERYBODY SING. Not one of MGM's finest hours, that's for sure. But it's not Judy's fault. She did wonderfully with some of the limp material she was given and a very unflattering set of costumes, especially her outfit for the finale of the show she's appearing in. Dreadful. And her blackface number, which she sang superbly, wasn't something I had remembered.

Next was DR. NO which I go back to every few months. I was really trying to decide if it would be DR. NO or GOLDFINGER, and DR. NO won out. I'll probably watch GOLDFINGER at some point over the weekend.

Watching these brings back so many wonderful memories going to these movies every time they came around paired with another James Bond movie after they played individually.

Then watched the quickie programmer KNOCKOUT which I had seen many years ago. Hard to imagine Arthur Kennedy as a cocky prizefighter when you see him in so many later roles as anything but an athlete. But it seems like many male stars of that day did one of more films playing a boxer, and he gets away with it in okay fashion.

Finally, I cued up PHILADELPHIA for tomorrow. I haven't seen this movie in a long, long time, maybe one other time since it was first released to theaters. The DVD has been sitting unopened on my to-watch shelf for years, so I figured it was time to take another look. It's so devastating to watch this.

Surprisingly, even though this was one of Columbia/ TriStar's earliest DVD releases, it was an anamorphic widescreen release.

I said I didn't have a dvd to watch this weekend but I happeb to see one in Best Buy a public domain release of three of Terence Hill (with Bud Spencer) movies They Call Me Trinity, Trinity is STILL My Name and Boot Hill. The first and second are a lot of fun The latter I haven;t seen in a long time and I am looking forward to seeing it. I don't think I have seen Boot Hill, but it did have a lot of different English names so I may have seen it.
