Well, you've read the notes, the notes were both straightforward and crookedbackward, and now it is time for you to post until the meandering cows come home.

BK, I think bringing back the Unseemly Trivia Contest is a great idea!  Of course, I've only ever been able to answer maybe one or two questions, but it's fun trying to find the answers...and completely frustrating, but in a good way. ;D

I've caught up on all of yesterday's posts.  And now...time for bed.  But later this morning, I want to go in to work to make up some time for taking off yesterday.  After that, I have to usher for the Masterworks Choral Ensemble's (http://www.mce.org/) (a very good local community choir) evening of Andrew Lloyd Webber music.  I don't doubt that there will be a good crowd and it'll be a good show.

Good night, BK. :)

Saturday!  And I have to work. :(

Oh well.

No rain here yesterday, but I think we will make up for that today.

I remember seeing PATTON at the drive in and thinking George C. Scott was doing a pretty remarkable job - although I didn't care much for Karl Malden....EVER.....

Good morning, all!  I slept very late this morning for no particular reason other than that I could.  I need to examine holiday music today for smething to arrange for the December Men's Chorus concert, and my desk needs a good cleaning.  I've also got to read this script for the musical theatre festival.  Tonight I'm seeing a 15-minute musical by my friends Curtis and Tom, which is part of the Ensemble Studio Theatre's one-act marathon.

TOD:
  Clark Gable - GWTW
Gregory Peck - To Kill a Mockingbird
  John Wayne - The Searchers
Ian Mackellan - Gods and Monsters

Good Morning!

I got up early(!) today thinking I was going to do something...  Alas, I did not end up doing said something...  Instead, I went to Whole Foods - it's amazing how empty and quiet(!) that place is at 8:10 on a Saturday morning... I breakfasted on croissants and cafe au lait...  Well, not really - I really just love that poem/lyric... Instead, I gathered some food from the Breakfast Hot Bar - bacon, sausage, cheese grits, etc. - then settled down in the cafe seating area and watched everyone else doing their morning things...  The gentleman behind me was marking up some music, well, at least writing in some new chord symbols for some transpositions... A woman was going over her aria for some audition or lesson she has later this morning - I believe it was Mozart from the looks of the patterns on the page...  A gay couple (men) were doting over their baby girl...  And the gentleman down a few tables from me just kept spinning his empty coffee cup and looking at the wall as if is he was trying to read it...

After I was done eating, I headed back to the bakery section where I picked up an assortment of bagels and some croissants, and those are now sitting in a pretty tray on the kitchen table waiting for the rest of the apartment to wake up.  -I guess I should start the coffee brewing soon...

Other than that, it's been a good morning so far, and I suspect I'll be taking a nap sometime this afternoon.

And, now, I must catch up on the posts from last night, and today's Notes.   -Yes, I posted before I read... bitch-slap me!  ;)

Laters...

I didn't get nearly enough sleep. Was too warm in the bed, and even after getting up and turning on the ceiling fan, I couldn't go back to sleep. So, it's been a long morning.

Beautiful day out with clear blue skies, but it's going to be very hot again today with no rain in sight.

I'm excited about all of the vendors- it looks like a lot of fun clothes, accessories, and crafty items.  I am hoping to gather some inspiration to return to doing a lot of crafts and sewing myself.  In honor of the day I am wearing a sundress that I just completed.

I finshed that Hollywood Screen Test disc this morning. Interesting that JoAnne Worley and Peg Murray tested for Ernestina Semple in HELLO DOLLY, and Sandy Duncan tested for Minnie Faye, also. Ron Rifkin tested for Ambrose, too. I might have picked Sandy over E.J. Peaker as Minnie Faye. In the other cases, I think the folks they went with for those film roles were appropriate.

After watching those DOLLY screen tests, it's made me want to revisit HELLO, DOLLY today which I'll probably do at some point. Certainly, apart from another new episode of THE EVIDENCE on ABC, there's nothing on TV for me to watch.

Ah, yes...  "The Moustache" hit his head a few weeks ago... And seems to be behaving erratically right now... Which in the case of Victor Newman, means he is acting nice and compassionate.  In fact, he just bought a new puppy for Nikki.  -And the dog's name is "Sapato" - since he likes to chew up shoes...

It was totally HOT here yesterday and my house was baking when I arrived home.  Turned on the A/C  and kept it on until my bedtime six hours later.

I had the fans going and it was tolerable...but I was fretful until about 2:30 a.m. or 3 a.m....when it finally cooled down.

Forecast is for hotter day today.

Re:  Patton.  As some here may know (can't remember if I've mentioned it before), my father was a battalion commander under Patton and his adjutant during the North Africa campaign.  My dad was a consultant (uncredited) on the film and was invited to the Seattle premiere as an honored guest (he was Senior Officer at Ft. Lewis at the time), and he brought me as his semi-honored guest  :).  This was a big deal--krieg lights, red carpet, even an opening act of patriotic tunes on the big organ that rose up out of the pit.   In fact, if you watch the film, one of Patton's adjutants in the film is named "Coughlin" and we've wondered if that was a slight reworking of my Dad.  Anyhoo, two things--my Dad was in the battalion that Patton had to apologize to after slapping the shell-shocked soldier (try saying that three times fast).  My Dad snuck a camera in and took pics of Patton apologizing.  It's been driving me crazy since I inherited my Dad's stuff because I can't find those particular snapshots--I think my Dad, in his idiocy of what these would be worth on eBay today  :o, sent them to a friend of his.  I found a letter to that effect in my Dad's effects and I actually called the guy, who was a semi-senile old fart (sorry) who was extremely confused as to who I was and who my Dad was.

But in terms of the film itself, yes, it's brilliant--but I'll never forget my Dad's whispered comment to me as the film started with Scott's monologue.  "Well, he may look like Patton, but he sure as hell doesn't sound like him--Patton had a high, squeaky voice like a little girl's."  ;)  Maybe that could be the obstacle the young Patton strives to overcome in the remake.

Well, not that quite unbelievable... Been to Best Buy, Tower Records and Video, Circuit City lately... Nary a VHS tape in sight... And stand alone VCRs are also getting hard to come by now - I see more of those VCR/DVD combos on the shelves lately.  -And when I do come across a VCR, they're usually more expensive than the DVD player on the next shelf.

Matthew Modine AND Nicolas Cage for Birdy.

Richard Gere for Blood Brothers. (LOVE that film!
Older brother Chubby (Paul Sorvino) is a combative, booze-swilling, rough-edged construction worker, following in the footsteps of his brother Tommy (Tony Lo Bianco). Macho in the extreme, these fellows have no time for the sensitive moral quandaries which are at the heart of the two younger brothers' lives. Stony (Richard Gere), has worked with his father in the construction business, but longs to work with children. Albert (Michael Hershewe), the youngest, is a sensitive lad, the butt of his father and oldest brother's rough manner, and is constantly being harassed by his stressed-out mother (Lelia Goldoni). After a few attempts to communicate with his insensitive older brother and his parents, Stony must decide for himself if the rejection he will experience from his family on leaving the construction business is worth it; and if it is, what can be done to protect his younger brother from the rest of the family? ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide)

And stand alone VCRs are also getting hard to come by now - I see more of those VCR/DVD combos on the shelves lately.  -And when I do come across a VCR, they're usually more expensive than the DVD player on the next shelf.

..Just an observation...

In a store near my place, video tapes sell now for..... one euro!!

I gave in to the pizza urge and had two slices - one cheese, one pepperoni - from Wolgang Puck.  I must say, a bit disappointing, but now I have it out of my system.  I can't imagine two slices would be over a 1000 calories, so I'm fine and quite full, plus I ran really briskly today.  I also found a pair of running shoes in my closet that I think I've only worn twice.

I watched HELLO, DOLLY! this afternoon. Well, I got to the middle of the "Hello, Dolly" number before I made some phone calls and cleared up lunch dishes.

Will finish it when I go back to the den. Next will come THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH which is the one DVD from that Marilyn Monroe boxed set that I haven't watched. I've just seen this movie so many times that I had put off watching the DVD, but I think it's time for it now. I'd like something light and fun tonight.

"Empire Of The Son".  I wanted to put the kid out of his misery. Can't remember his acting, I just loathed the film so much.

Of course I didn't think much of E.T. either.

It may say more about me than the films.. LOL.

But then I thought Haley Joel Osment was wonderful in the Sixth Sense, "A.I." and "Pay It Forward",

I even liked Helen Hunt's performance  in "Pay It Forward". Much better than "As Good As It Gets" in which she was IMHO very much her TV persona.

I was planning to drive up to Portland this afternoon to see the new John Abraham Bollywood movie WATER, but have been too tired today to do a lot of driving around. So instead I am flopped on the couch like so much fish watching Alan Steel in HERCULES AND THE MASKED RIDER wherein Hercules somehow or other is in the days of the Three Musketeers??!!

Well it is fun anyhow, although I suspect a nap will be happening for me quite soon.

I've mentioned the films over the past few weeks but I've now seen Richard Lester's "It's Trad Dad", "Just For Fun" and "The Knack and How to Get It".

I've enjoyed the three of them but still do not see what is so wonderful about "A Hard Day's Night" which I find laboured. I think the film score is terrific and is certainly has some of the best melodies written by Lennon and McCartney..

The craft fair was kinda nice. A lot of homemade "hipster" kind of clothing and jewelry and such. TPunk bought some hair clips she liked. Then we ate and walked around a bit in Williamsburg which is really kind of like the East Village used to be. A lot of young folks live there and cool shops and whatnot. But alas, TPunk got a migraine on the way home and is wiped out for the night, costing HHW some serious posting power.

How about a refinement in which we relay our favorite lines from some of our favorite actors' performances?

"Fill your hands, you son of a bitch!" John Wayne, TRUE GRIT.

"Then some gentleman should be prepared to be very kind to me." Ronald Colman LOST HORIZON.

"Just be careful that you don't shoot the nag instead of the Yankee." Clark Gable GONE WITH THE WIND.

"I'm not trying to brag, but I do allright with girls my own age." John Saxon THE UNGUARDED MOMENT.

"We created Jean Harlow and we are responsible for her care and feeding. The kind of nourishment she needs exists only on paper.  She'll starve."  Martin Balsam HARLOW.

"The day I take you is when you have everything to lose and nothing to gain."  George Peppard in THE CARPETBAGGERS.

I had a strange thing happen. I was cleaning up from pruning the bushes outside my house and up walked this cat crying and crying. It looks exactly like the cat I was thinking of adopting (socks). I think it's a she, had on a collar that looked brand new and was rolling around on my sidewalk trying to get it off.  She followed me everywhere and wouldn't leave.  So, I finally put some food and water outside  on the front stoop.  She was starving!  I know I probably shouldn't have fed her, but she was crying and crying. I left her outside. I am hoping that the owners find her.  Callie is transfixed looking out the window.  So she may still be there.

If it starts raining and she's still out there, I'm going to let her into my entryway, but I am hoping her new "parents" come looking for her. Or she decides to go home.

My neighbor fosters cats from the shelter, so if the cat sticks around, I'll find out if it's a foster cat and still possible to adopt her. Callie isn't hissing and upset, she's really quite curious

Kevin finally dropped by at four.  I gave him the DVD to watch, and he'll return it tomorrow.  He did call when he got a quarter of the way through and said he loved it so far.  That was nice to hear.

I'm all showered and shaved and ready for whatever tonight's musical is.  I've already been warned it's two-and-a-half hours long.  But, it's got Sara Rue, French Stewart, and Gregg Henry, so the actors are good.

Gregg Henry was SOOOOOOOOO good in the television series RICH MAN POOR MAN....not the miniseries....the series that followed!    8)

No, no! Empire of the Sun!

Empire of the Son.... I don't like either!! ;) :D

Apologies to all, but I love THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH; I've never found Tom Ewell anything but rather peculiar looking.  I also adore Patti Lupone, who was wonderful in EVITA, miscast in ANYTHING GOES, fantastic in CAN-CAN and everything else I've seen her do.  I can't stand the generally inept, constantly overrated and undervoiced, Bernadette Peters, from whom I've seen one good performance in 20 years (SUNDAY IN THE PARK).

I've just returned from the Series C evening of one-acts at the Ensemble Studio Theatre Marathon 2006. The last one-act on the program was a 15-minute musical, THE BUS TO BUENOS AIRES, by Curtis Moore and Thomas Mizer. I found it a beautiful, poetic piece for 3 women, one man, and a guitarist. The cast was quite good: the man was played by Sebastian LaCause, and the three ladies, all with lovely voices, sang in beautiful harmony. The guitarist memorized the score and his wonderful playing fit the piece beautifully.

The other four one-acts ran from good to dreadful, but there were familiar faces  on and offstage:
My friend Lou Jacob directed a too-long, too-wordy, too-actory piece with two wonderful actors who deserved better.
Actor Andrew McCarthy directed an absurdist piece "The Night That Roger Went to Visit the Parents of an Old High School Girlfriend," which featured actor Daniel Geroll, whose work I've always liked.
Will Janowitz, who plays Finn (Meadow's boyfriend) on THE SOPRANOS, was in a strange comedy "Lila On the Wall."

It was an interesting evening, overall, but THE BUS TO BUENOS AIRES was the best of the lot.   If you'd like to hear some of my friends' work, here is the website:

I put in THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH which is probably as good as the film can look now. The Restoration Comparison special feature detailed that ITCH was in the worst shape of any of the films in the Marilyn Diamond Collection #1 boxed set. Certainly there were moments when the film seemed softer than other scenes. I'm guessing this was the reel that was so damaged.

I also watched the AMC Backstory which detailed the toning down of the source material due to the Breen Office, and the end of Marilyn's marriage to Joe Dimaggio which was going on during the filming of the movie.

Tom Ewell has never been a favorite of mine, but I'm amazed he scored a 7 year Fox contract when he signed to do this film. I would have thought his screen presence would have been too limiting to see him be able o work that much, but I guess Fox managed to find projects to put him in during those 7 years.

Back from the PAJAMA GAME final perfromance.  The seats, while all the way to the audience left side, turned out to be quite excellent, with the only missed moment being when Mr. Connick was standing all the way stage right during the Act II duet reprise of "Hey There."

After the show, to benefit Hurricane Katrina and other charities, Mr. Connick auctioned off dinner with himself and got I think $30,000 for that.

Got to see my former boss Tom Bissell, son of PAJAMA GAME co-author Richard Bissell, before the show after not having seen Tom in over ten years (although we've emailed and spoken quite a few times).  Lovely seeing him again, and he seemed surprised that I was seeing the show again and that my friend Julie was actually seeing the show a third time.

My friend, Jeff, and I ended up heading out to a great Indian place on the East Side called "Chola".  The food was quite excellent, and the portions were very generous.  So generous, in fact, that neither of us could finish our entrees.  We ordered one of their appetizer assortment platters, and when it came to the table we both went into a sort of shock.  The platter was brimming with goodies: iddly, pakora, samosas, kulcha, etc., etc., etc.  Very, very tasty.  And then came our entrees, both of which were served in deceptively big bowls.  I had some special spicy lamb dish, and Jeff ordered a wonderful chicken in a mango curry sauce.  Again, truly wonderful food.  And the accompanying sauces and chutneys, breads, papad and rice were all thoughtfully prepared and not treated like mere accompaniments.

We were so full that we both just opted for some chai tea for dessert.

I will most definitely be making a return trip or two there in the near future.
Title: Re:THE CROOKEDBACKWARD QUESTION
Post by: JoseSPiano on June 17, 2006, 11:12:15 PM
OH!...

The menu at Chola had a most interesting layout.  On one side of the page there was the listing of the food.  On the other side was a picture and then a small paragraph about Indian culture - and those that were influenced by Indian religious practices.  Thus, right below the picture of Ravi Shankar, was a picture of the Beatles.

:)

Additionally, besides the usual markings for "spicy", and "very spicy", there were dishes marked, "Must Try".  And then there were dishes marked, "Martha Stewart's Favorite".  -Ah! That's right - the chef from Chola has appeared on Martha Stewart's cooking show a couple of times.  So...

Jeff and I started joking... "Should we have a whole meal of "Must Try's"? or should we have a whole meal of "Martha Stewart's Favorites"?"

;)

....I guess you had to be there.   ;D

Then after dinner, Jeff headed back to Brooklyn, and I headed over the Apple store - it is open 24 hours, ya' know - to buy some software I've been looking at the past couple of weeks.  Then I met James, and we walked around for a bit before heading back uptown.

-And, boy, did the humidity set in as the sun went down.  It's a bit sticky outside right now.  -And, of course, it's probably a good indicator of how it's going to be tomorrow/later today... Ah, summertime, summertime, sum-, sum-, summertime....

DR MBarnum - Is there another movie called "Water" out right now? The one I'm familiar is sort of controversial since it deals with certain cultural practices in India, in particular the Hindu religion.  The movie is based on events taking placing during India's Colonial period.  In fact, the filmmaker, Deepa Mehta, met with strong(!) opposition - death threats - in trying to get this film made.

Yes, John Abraham, is in the movie, but I do not believe it is a  Bollywood movie.  There are songs by A. R. Rahman in the movie, but they are supposedly in the background and not "performed".  For more info, here's the website for the movie:

http://water.mahiram.com/

There is info on the Production page, and lots of links to various articled on the Press page.  The whole story of how the movie eventually got made is quite a good read.  A bit scary, but good.

*The movie is currently showing here in New York City at the Paris which is behind The Plaza, and I may be seeing it this week myself.

A neighbor is blasting Billy Joel music. I'm not a fan, as those who know me can attest. And yet, I find it more odd than annoying that someone would choose to blast "Keeping the Faith" and "An Innocent Man." Beats reggaeton, I guess.

You could always confiscate it...

I like Billy Joel

That's where my pal Penny Peyser and Gregg met - on Rich Man, Poor Man - she was a regular, as was her then-husband James Carroll Jordan.

Only twenty-five copies of the signed Deceit left.

I posted more notes...

The graphic is on two sites promoting it and we have be emailing, posting and posting again like mad...

Sometimes it happens. Side topic: Movies you've fallen asleep during at the movie theater (as an adult, let's say. Napping at the drive-in during BAMBI doesn't count).

Does anyone know who sang for Irene Malloy?  It most definitely is not the voice of the actress who acted the part, but I've never been able to find out who it was. :-\

Someone on IMDb.com's message board wrote "I once read that she was dubbed by different people on different songs."  Any info??

You're gonna laugh but

I was very impressed by Christian Bale in EMPIRE OF THE SUN and

Christian Bale in "The Machinist."  Other TOTD performances (most have already been mentioned):

Robert Duvall - Tender Mercies
Laurence Harvey - The Manchurian Candidate
Tom Hanks - A League of Their Own and Philadelphia
Rex Harrison - My Fair Lady
Dustin Hoffman - Tootsie
Jack Lemmon - Some Light It Hot
William H. Macy- Fargo
Ryan O'Neal - What's Up Doc?
Gregory Peck - To Kill A Mocking Bird
James Stewart - It's a Wonderful Life

I know it's so close to the new topic, but I literally can't keep my eyes open.  The choral concert was not bad...not great, but not bad.  It was all Andrew Lloyd Webber stuff, but nothing really new.  Most of the arrangements sounded like the choral arrangements that high school choirs use.

Otherwise, I'm very tired and must get to bed before I fall asleep and bonk my head on my computer desk. :o That wouldn't be a good thing. ;)

So, good night, all!
