Title: FATHER'S DAY
Post by: bk on June 18, 2006, 12:09:07 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were very fatherly, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're off looking for their fathers right now.

I just got back to the cabin, from a concert thing in Seattle - a friend of mine tried out a new show... most of the audience were friends and family. It was very nice - I've heard all the songs, save one. Two act cabaret, storyline, the megillah. Nice evening.

Re The Princess Bride, I've never felt that the film captures what was so much fun about the book.  All the "skipped pages," and what Goldman writes about what he's skipping in order to give us the "good parts" version of the tale, well, there simply isn't any real way to capture that on film.

I suggest that DR TCB give the novel a try.  The Silent Gondoliers is pretty good, too, if less well known.

Last night DR George asked:

"Does anyone know who sang for Irene Malloy?  It most definitely is not the voice of the actress who acted the part, but I've never been able to find out who it was.

Someone on IMDb.com's message board wrote "I once read that she was dubbed by different people on different songs."  Any info??"

Yep, in her solos, she was dubbed by Melissa Stafford. In ensemble work, it was Gilda Maiken.

I think this information was revealed when the DOLLY soundtrack album was released on CD some years ago. I think I copied the names down from Max Preeo's review of the CD in SHOW MUSIC.

The TOD yesterday

Francois chose Richard Gere in Bloodbrothers. And I agree. Totally forgot about this film, but it showed that he was a very good actor when he gets the right material. Another early film that he was very good was I think was called Fields of Heaven

Also many people chose a PETER O'TOOLE performance.
Some chose LAWRENCE OF ARABIA. LION IN THE WINTER and some chose GOODBYE MR, CHIPS.
I thought about those as well, but the reason why I didn't choose them was:

LAWRENCE OF ARABIA. Most people think that this was O'Toole first film, but it wasn't. He was very good, not great as the spectacle drawfed the performances.

LION IN THE WINTER: The whole cast was excellent and in my opinion there was no real standout performance despite the excellent work that he did,

GOODBYE MR. CHIPS Yes he was excellent in this film, BUT his singing was awful and his songs were awful. IF memory serves me they were all thought songs much like what they did to Peter Finch in the musical version of Lost Horizon. At least they got someone to sing for him. (I would call it dubbing because we never see him open his mouth and sing?

MATT is correct. I don't remember who the singers were but there was a great article in Max Preeo' SHOW MUSIC (Which is still sadly missed) about the filming of Hello Dolly (which I believe coincided with the release of the cd soundtrack of Hello Dolly)

Good morning, all!  I slept late, and I enjoyed every moment of it.  Last night, I finished watching the 10-episode BBC soaper BERKELEY SQUARE, which I enjoyed quite a lot.  It certainly ends as abruptly as a Fox channel cancellation, as if the BBC decided there would bo no second season and gave no damn to tying up loose ends.  Good cast, costumes, and interesting characters.

Goddaughter Charlotte called me about a movie; I wanted PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION, but she wants NACHO LIBRE (oy!) so we'll see that.  I do like Jack Black, but the movie looks rather alarming.

I just spoke to my dad for Father's Day, and he sounds so frail.  I'm speaking to my sister-in-law as I type this: my father needs as many vibes as you can afford to send his way.  I'm starting to feel my brothers want me back to help babysit and feeling guilty, he's down to 158 lbs, and he has no strength at all.  She tells me he's stumbling and falling and I'm starting to worry that my July trip to Ohio will be the last to spend time with him.

BK, in the theatre is a small world department:  Sara Rue is the daughter of Joan Rue, Administrative Assistant at the University of Kentucky Theatre Department, The Lovely Wife's and my alma mater, and a friend of ours.  Julieanne was in the department at the same time Joan was.

Woody, I agree with you about Princess Bride...part of what makes the book so endearing is Goldman thrusting himself in as the intrusive, commenting editor all the time.
Title: Re:FATHER'S DAY

Pogue, we were discussing the University of Kentucky thing last night.  Apparently, Joan is back there, and Mark, her husband, Sara's daddy, stage manages all their shows now (he was a B'way stage manager for years).

I woke up this morning much relieved to no longer feel like the top of my head and eyeballs had caved in.  Gadzooks! I haven't had a migraine like that in years and I hope I don't have another one like it for at least a few years more.  Nothing seemed to work last night and I was in agony until I finally was able to fall asleep after about 3 or 4 hours.  Ug.

TPunk - sorry about the headache - I suffered from frequent migraines for years. But as I got older the frequency, if not the intensity, dwindled. If I am aware of the aura, BEFORE it slams into my skull, I can sometimes short-circuit a headache with Excedrin Migraine. 2 tabs, and lie down in the dark, BEFORE the headache comes.

Elmore, my heart goes out to you and your family. I know, son. I know.

Well, I must go to Costco and get some blank videotapes.  The Light In the Piazza is going to be on in about 40 minutes and I don't have any!  But since Costco is less than two miles away, it won't take me much time.  After that I'll take a shower, then my sister, niece and I are going to our parents' house.  They're going to take their RV to the beach for the week.  We'll drive out with them and spend some time there, then come back this evening.

DR Jose, yes that is the same WATER film...do go and see it...and see John Abraham!

I think a lot of that "danger" was publicity, although some fundamentalist Hindu's were not happy over it! But the film takes place in the 1930s and things have changed a bit since then as far as widow's remarrying...but the Hindu versions of Pat Robertson are likely still against such things.

And I do believe there are not song and dance numbers in the film...so far as I have been able to find...I have seen no soundtrack release...the DVD might have some extras, however.

If you go and see it, be sure to report back! I must know your opinion of John Abraham!

Father's Day greetings!  We've had a busy day, attending church in Cincinnati, picking up the 3 "elders" (my mother, my mother-in-law, my aunt) and bringing them home for Father's Day steak dinner.  Before we left, I put green beans & ham in the crock pot and put potatoes in the oven, which was set to come on and bake them.  When we all arrived home, we broiled lovely filets mignon.  Couple of bottles of Gewertztraminer and assorted mini Dove bars rounded out the meal.  DS Richard was duly feted and the old ladies enjoyed being out of their retirement communities for a while.

DR Elmore - my thoughts and prayers are with your family.

Spent a really full afternoon of video viewing.

I began with THE KSSING BANDIT. I can see why the film bombed. Frank Sinatra often played an insecure man with the ladies in his MGM musicals (how ironic knowing about his private life as we do), but he's just a fool in this. Most of the music isn't memorable (Nacio Herb Brown wrote the song score), and he and Kathryn Grayson never paired felicitously in the movies and certainly not here. It was nice to see Clint Sundberg have a larger part than usual. Mildred Natwick was totally wasted as Kathryn's aunt.

Next came THE BROKEN HEART'S CLUB. I was in the mood for an overtly gay film, and as I hadn't watched this in some time, I put it on. Many of these guys went on to mainstream success on TV and in films.

Enjoyed seeing it again.

The other night as I was scaning through channels, I ran across DE-LOVELY on Showtime-HD. I didn't stay to watch as it's a pretty bad movie, but with an hour to kill before THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA came on this afternoon, I put in the DVD and started watching it again.

MGM usually manages to bungle their DVDs in some way, but how funny that in the case of this turkey of a movie, they gave it a STERLING transfer onto DVD. Grand clarity and sound. It figures.

THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA was a lovely afternoon in the theater. While I like the music, much of it doesn't soar for me. Still, it's certainly lovely enough in spots to suffice, and the cast and production were aces.

And THANK YOU to PBS for photographing it in widescreen. It gave a much more theatrical feel to viewing with seeing more of the stage as things happened.

Also quite enjoyed the intermission interviews and backstage features, too.

Good job! I wish more Broadway shows could come to us in this way.

Very little chance.

Ug.

For TPunk (or possibly Rodzinski):   NBC Nightly News did a story the other night saying that it appears that more frequent sexual activity can cut down on migraines.

Hmm, surprised that I don't have migraines!

I know.

I used to get migraines much more frequently but after four years of therapy, they decreased quite a bit- who would have thunk it.  Foolishly, I did feel it coming on hours before but since we were out and about, I did nothing to stop it.  Hindsight is always 20/20.

The Newark Bears played valiently, but alas they are really not so good.  At one point they were behind 7-0, they managed to close the gap a bit with a score of 11-8, but then lost the game with a final score of 13-8.

I cooked him a nice breakfast veggie and cheese omlet, sausage and whole wheat bagel and then the Vixter and I went off to church.

When we got home he decided he wanted to spend his day watching a movie... the XMAN 3 so off we went to the theatre.

I am not a fan on the franchise and have had only fleeting glimpses of the first two when Vixdad and the Vixter were watching them on the TV

I quote enjoyed this although I did have trouble with one scene that seemed to abruptly change from day to night.  The special effects were fun.

If you do go to see it, stay until the end of the credits.

The Thai Chicken Pizza I had was amazing. Vixter and Vixdad had  more traditional choices but they both loved them.

COLD CASE was a repeat, of course, but it also happened to be one I had seen. Darn! I miss almost all of the first half of the season due to sports runovers, and now when that doesn't happen, they show episodes from the second half of the season that I've seen.

I continued with DE-LOVELY which annoys me this time through just like it did the last time with songs SO out of order. I'll probably finish it, however, and then not watch it again for a long, long time.

It was followed by a short film written by Isabella Rossellini about her father. Directed by Canadian wunderkind Guy Maddin. If you hate overly stylized things, you would hate Guy Maddin films, they are extremely artistic, designed to look like early silent and German expressionistic movies. I find he has a great sense of humor though.

Anyways, the film was Isabella in many guises discussing her father. She plays David O. Selznick, Fellini, Hitchcock, Chaplin, her mother, and herself. It sounds bad, but it is only 15 minutes or so and rather sweet. The title of it is MY DAD IS 100 YEARS OLD.

Wow, if not even Virgin stores can survive (Vixmom said one had closed out by her), record stores will really be extinct in a couple years. When I think of the major chains, to say nothing of the mom and pop shops that have disappeared just in the last 5 years or so, it is a lesson in how quickly the tide can turn.

Used to be an HMV in every sector of the city.
There are still a couple Towers and a couple Virgins, but no other music chain survives.
And there's no cool large independent retailer like Amoeba out here.

I went to a bar-b-q at my neice and nephew-in-laws house today...Bosco was quite a hit with everyone...particularly a little 5 year old girl that was there.

She played with Bosco quite a lot...I would find her sitting on him or hugging him...or talking with him...or curled up with him...or just petting him on the head. Bosco was loving every minute of it!

And when I was ready to leave she insisted that Bosco should stay at the barb-b-q...I mean really insisted! In fact I think she got a bit miffed at me for wanting to take him home! LOL!

Good Evening!

Well... James and I did not end up heading to Broadway Bares tonight... The 9:30 show was sold out, and by the time we reached Roseland to get in line to get tickets for the midnight show, the line was already all the way down 52nd, up Broadway, up to 53rd and around the corner.  -And that was with still an hour and 15 to go till the doors opened!  So... Since neither of us were in the mood to stand in such a long line, we just walked around Times Square for a a while.  -A little hot and humid outside, but not too bad.

Oh.. In between heading out earlier and deciding not to go to Broadway Bares, we took a nice walk through Riverside Park.  We started up at 96th Street and headed all the way down to 59th.  I had never been that close to the water, and it was a perfect evening for a walk - a nice breeze, and there were some boats moored in the middle of the river.

...And then came "whym" for dinner.  We both had the Chicken Pot Pie which was quite good, and then split their "Peanut Butter Martini" for dessert.  The "martini" was layers of a peanut butter filling alternating with chocolate ganache.  Very good, and not cloyingly sweet (surprisingly).

Back from the play and a little late repast - like Vixmom and company, we went to CPK, and Nick had the Thai Chicken Pizza while I had a Caesar Salad.  I feel like I ate to much, but I jogged like a demon today, so I think I'm probably okay. There was worse than rush hour traffic coming home at ten-forty-five.  Turned out there was a five car pile-up right by the interchange - why is it always by the interchange?  Everything was way off to the side and blocking nothing, but everyone had to slow down and look.  They were giving folks drunk tests - so it was probably some drunken cretin who caused it.

watched a movie tonight called "Madness of King GEorge III". It was not too bad but I expected more than what was presented on the screen. I hope of Elizebeth and Young Shakespeare in Love.

Still debating if I am brave enough to watch A Midsummer's Night's Dream with Dep and Pfeiffer.  Some say it is good and others dont.
